Shiny new thread! Thanks!
We’re in for the next fight of our lives.

I hate the GOP for putting us thru this and being so thoroughly corrupt.

Unpaid and abused: Moderators speak out against Reddit (Engadget)

Somewhere out there, a man wants to rape Emily. She knows this because he was painfully clear in typing out his threat. In fact, he’s just one of a group of people who wish her harm.
For the past four years, Emily has volunteered to moderate the content on several sizable subreddits — large online discussion forums — including r/news, with 16.3 million subscribers, and r/london, with 114,000 subscribers. But Reddit users don’t like to be moderated.

In a joint investigation, Engadget and Point spoke to 10 Reddit moderators, and all of them complained that Reddit is systematically failing to tackle the abuse they suffer. Keeping the front page of the internet clean has become a thankless and abusive task, and yet Reddit’s administration has repeatedly neglected to respond to moderators who report offenses.

I’ll come right out and say it. Kavanaugh will be confirmed as our next SCJOTUS. The only hope we have after this is to win significant majorities in Congress as well as the Presidency in 2020. Then we can appoint younger justices to try and balance things out. This would be the “proper” thing to do.

But I can’t help if part of me wants the 2020 Dem President to consider all Trump has done as null and void due to Russian fuckery, and the unanimous GOP approval and even participation of it.

It can’t be viewed as good news that women’s abortion rights will vanish across vast swaths of the country in a year or two, but it should energize women voters across the country when they realize the Senate just voted to take away one of their constitutional rights. The Democrats polling momentum is growing as its beginning to look 63 days out like the Democratic wave could be a Tsunami.

The important thing is maintaining that momentum into 2020. If that energy can be maintained, then it could end up with the GOP being completely blown out of the water, and with any luck, not just at the national level.

The next Democratic President can’t simply declare everything the government did from 2017-2020 null and void. If the Democrats gain control of Congress and the White House, there are steps they can take to begin the recovery and to prevent white minority rule in the future, even without amending the Constitution.

By white minority rule, you mean a period of time where the minority of white people cosign this fuckery, or when white people are the minority? We won’t be there for either version by 2020.

31
lawhawk  Sep 4, 2018 • 7:56:46am

The fix is in.

All of this is a show. Kavanaugh’s answers are irrelevant, unless he completely flops and can’t take the life preserver thrown out by the GOP that is all too willing to enable the throwing of the court to the right wingers for a generation to come.

There isn’t anything Democrats can do. They don’t have the numbers, and the craven trio of Murkowski, Collins, and Flake all talk like they’re open to blocking him, but when push comes to shove, they’ll fall in line and rubber stamp this horrendous pick even though the GOP has moved ahead without so much as reviewing all of the documents that they’ve requested from the National Archives.

That completely blows the entire concept of Advise and Consent out the window (as if blocking Merrick Garland from ever getting a hearing didn’t already prove the craven GOP intent to destroy comity and the process of nominations to the Supreme Court).

And this is on McConnell who gamed the system to pack the courts with the right wing extremists who are intent on rolling back civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights, and worker protections and environmental protections.

The GOP has been building up to this moment where they can go after the federal government’s core functionality - and for what - to gut the government’s ability to function so millionaires can get bigger tax breaks all while polluting the environment, screwing workers, and depriving minorities of their hard-won rights.

GOP delenda est.

You mean when the majority of white voters in the country voted for a white nationalist? Trump got less votes, but demographically, he still got the white vote. electrotek  Sep 4, 2018 • 9:15:33am

Ended up selling my ‘96 Civic hatchback over the weekend for my asking price of $3,000. The worst part was the discovery of the head gasket being blown as the car started overheating out of nowhere. As the reservoir tank was over flowing with coolant after an hour of driving, my worst suspicions emerged and were unfortunately confirmed once I used an engine block tester and the test fluid turned yellow. Instead of failing to disclose it to anyone buying it, I ended up having the head gasket replaced for a good price and made sure not only the head gasket was replaced, but also the head was machined with the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, throttle body gaskets, thermostat, and the 10 head bolts all replaced with OEM parts to ensure it runs well for a long time. Does it suck that such a problem happens at the worst possible time? Yeah it does, but rather be ethical and honest than being discreet and hoping that the buyer doesn’t discover it until after purchase. Important for those who were inquiring about it from way out of town, as the buyer who snagged it drove it back to Odessa from DFW without any issues.

As they say, shit happens, but what goes around comes around, I say.

One of the Kindle First Reads book for September is The Ragged Edge of Night, a historical fiction based on a real story. It’s set in WWII Germany and I’ve got lots of books of that genre, so was going to try something else until I read the lone one-star review:

Beware of the politics
By Angela on September 4, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I appreciated the story of this book, even more so because it is based on a true story. The writing did drag on in several areas, leading me to skim through paragraphs at times. I love WW2 stories, so much that it is rare that I find a book that I don’t like, regardless of the writing quality. I love the stories of how individuals kept hope I’m even the most dire situations, rising up to fight against an obvious evil.

With that being said, I don’t read these to have politics thrown at me out of nowhere. Discuss the white supremacists that have shown up in the news more recently, absolutely. But the references to Trump seemed baseless and lacked credibility and any reference to the actual story. Nazis took took their guns…is Trump trying to? They killed off the disabled…had he done that? I mean, all of the things even mentioned in this book as a precursor to the nazi rise in power isn’t relevant to a particular political party. For a book based on a real story, and the author’s notes at the end based on reality, it seems out of place to then interject political opinions out of nowhere.

It would be different if I had purposely chosen a political book to read. I doubt I’ll read another book by this author. Really disappointing.

An obvious Trumpster was offended enough to trash the author, so I figger the book must be worthwhile.

We’re hoping to stretch out our old Buick for as long as we’ll have any use for it. It had what we used to call a “minor rebuild” like that after a similar incident ~30,000 miles ago. It’s at 175K now, and 200 grand is pretty common these days. We put maybe 1,000 miles a year on it, and we won’t be needing it any 25 more years, so…fingers crossed.

Trump’s lawyers went to Mueller’s office and re-enacted the mock interview. Their goal: to argue that Trump couldn’t possibly testify because he was incapable of telling the truth.

Busy morning, so I haven’t read any of this thread yet.

I was just driving through downtown Columbus and was surprised to see a good 50 or more protesters out on the sidewalk in front of Rob Portman’s office building. They had signs, but the traffic was moving and I couldn’t see what they said.

It was just good to see, as before Trump, it was rare to see protesters outside that particular federal office building.

Now it is common to see a few every day. Today was way more than usual. I couldn’t tell how many actually, because some of them were standing in the alley that runs between the buildings. Just a good turnout.

All ages too.

Now to the bank and the store. Got a decent payment today.

At this point I don’t know why McConnell just doesn’t change the rules and declare Kavanaugh has been approved. He’s been doing that for four years now, inventing rules that say a black president can’t appoint anyone to the courts in his last two years, then saying a new Democratic president wouldn’t be allowed to appoint anyone period. Why stop there?

It is a problem, and he should probably recuse himself from the vote if he takes office before it happens. Then again, any Republican appointed to fill that seat is likely going to vote for Kavanaugh.

My point was more general: Arizona seems to have a lot of wingnuttiness in the GOP. In the grand scheme of things, Kyl is better than say… Jan Brewer or Joe Arpio.

Darth is wrong — those inside the WH might believe that — but the Trumpsters I know still think he’s a great President. Amazing how deluded the typical Trump supporter is. OTOH — the Koch Bros do know he’s an idiot but as long as his policies help them, they don’t care what damage he inflicts on our nation

Right now, if Grassley slips up, the Democrats have a majority and could reject the nomination. If they leave, 1) we won’t be hearing the crap the GOP is trying to pull, and 2) what’s to stop Grassley and McConnell from declaring a quorum?

Making this a farce is their best weapon right now. The public doesn’t want Kavanaugh and they don’t even have all of the information.

The best they can do is make him lie to Congress as many times as possible. That’s the only possible leverage to remove him after 2020.

Considering that Kavanaugh issued a political holding that the government’s action in barring a teenage immigrant in their custody from having an abortion didn’t constitute an “undue burden” on her right to an abortion, that’s pretty rich. If you’re looking for some good news (albeit a bit distant on the horizon, and we all hope to Dog that it’s not a mirage) - a GOP pollster has looked at the numbers for November and predicted “instant death” for Republicans in formerly safe GOP seats:

npr.org

“What I’m seeing, with the exception of a handful of states, in state after state are huge increases in Democratic turnout relative to the increase in Republican turnout, when you look at 2014 versus 2018 turnout,” said Republican pollster John Couvillon. “From looking at primary turnout as evidence of partisan enthusiasm, I’m seeing it on the Democratic side.”

(snip)

“If you’re running behind 2016 levels, that’s instant death if you’re a Pete Sessions or Erik Paulsen,” Couvillon said, citing endangered GOP incumbents in Texas and Minnesota, who represent two of the 25 districts currently held by Republicans that Democrat Hillary Clinton carried in 2016.

What still has yet to be determined are the criminal charges every last mofo in Trumpworld should be facing for this disastrous admin and their corruption that began well before entering the WH, but was vastly expanded thanks to GOP malfeasance and eanbling.

I married someone from upstate NY. When we visited his parents for the first time, Mr. C. took me out in the back yard and proceeded to light matches and drop them on the ground. I was horrified, but of course, they all went out.
It was a spectacle matched only by the first time I walked on a frozen lake. (Me: “Is it safe to walk on?” Mr. C.: “You’ll notice people have parked their cars out on it.” Me: “Oh.”)

Years ago, we used to use glass spreaders to spread suspensions of bacteria onto antibiotic-laced agar plates*. The plate was on a little turntable thing that you’d spin while pressing the spreader on the plate to distribute the bacteria. You dip the spreader into alcohol to sterilize, then pass it through a Bunsen burner flame to burn off the alcohol (and also sterilize)

When I set up my workspace to do this, I put the turntable centered in front of me, the alcohol to the right of that, and the burner to the extreme right. I’d hold the flaming spreader out there till the alcohol burned off. Sometimes burning alcohol dripped on the bench. No problem. Simple.

One guy I worked with, also right handed, insisted on putting his alcohol to the LEFT of the turntable, and then the Bunsen to the left of that. And he dripped flaming alcohol into his beaker of alcohol, lighting IT on fire, requiring he stop and snuff that out with the foil lid of the beaker.

You’d think after doing that ONCE, he’d rethink his arrangement.

You’d be wrong.

*antibiotic laced, because we put DNA into bacteria with antibiotic resistance genes, so only the bacteria that get the DNA grow.

Interrupt Republicans when they say stupid pretending shit like Garland never happened. At this point, Kavanaugh will be confirmed. Not that I disagree with the sentiments: it’s just that it will probably give Tomi Lahren and whatever FOX creatures that run her show an excuse to rag on KG and mump away about how “rude” left-wingers are….

Is it time that liberals stop worrying about appearances?

Look at what the conservatives are doing…there is nothing toned down about their actions. They are hurting this whole country and many people in it with their actions.

They may even be selling us all out to have a relationship with Russia to help turn this country into some kind of White Nationalist Wonderland.

We stay nice, they still screw us over. We get tough they will still try to screw us over.

Screw that.

Sure, we don’t need the fuck you, but we sure need to be extremely tough and take a stance we will not back down from.

Good thread—I’d also note that in 1956, when William Brennan’s confirmation hearing was held, there was an incredible number of “are you going to take marching orders from the Pope?” questions asked. How do I know this? She might be doing it to “trigger the libs”, although using white supremacist imagery to do it is a pretty fucking dumb thing to do. Or she’s a white supremacist—wouldn’t be at all shocking. But you’ll have a tough time convincing me that, whatever her reasoning, it’s not 100% intentional. That is not a natural way someone holds their hand.

It’s of a piece with the contempt in which he’s always held Jeff Sessions for being from the South, talking like he’s from the South, and not going to an Ivy League school.

What year and model is the Buick?

But member Trump is the champion of forgotten Merika.// He’s such a snobbish dickbag. Sessions is awful but it’s not because he’s from Alabama and got his JD there. He’s awful because he’s a racist asshole just like Ivy League WF Buckley was.

hahahahahaa

Nike’s move is likely predominately motivated by a change in its strategy, which is now focused on more experimental and modern conveniences that the aging store could provide. While there are a lot of floors and square footage, the floors are set up in such a way that it would be difficult to reconfigure.

The space in the new Nike store “gives us more opportunities to play with new concepts than we have now,” Nike spokesperson Ilana Finley told Forbes.

Think of it more along the lines of the new Nike Soho store, which has places to run, play soccer, and even a near-half basketball court to shoot hoops.

Two anonymous Nike employees told Forbes that these space issues at Niketown were the biggest reason for the move, while the association with Trump’s brand was only “a factor, to some degree.”

Editor in Chief of ⁦@TheEconomist⁩: “Why our invitation to Steve Bannon will stand” economist.com

— Jake Tapper

I just called and cancelled my print subscription to The Economist. When asked why, I noted that I did not wish to support an organisation that supports fascism, racism, and Holocaust denial by giving a platform to Steve Bannon.

They will refund me $86. Perhaps I can use that to support Little Green Footballs and Wonkette.

When I was done on the phone (with a person who seemed to have an accent in English) I noted that working for a fascist-promoting corporation told me more about her than she would know about me.

My wife said “good for you.”

As we always say: “Jimmy Carter had to sell his peanut farm.”

He didn’t actually have to sell his peanut farm, it was placed in a blind trust. As a result of trustee mismanagement, when his presidency was over, it was a million dollars in debt (which, adjusted for inflation is just shy of three million dollars today).

7 dead, 200 injured after typhoon batters western Japan; 3,000 stranded at Kansai airport

The strongest typhoon to hit Japan in 25 years tore across the west of the country Tuesday, killing seven people and injuring at least 200 with violent winds and heavy rainfall.

The strong gusts ripped sheeting from rooftops, overturned trucks on bridges and swept a tanker anchored in Osaka Bay into a bridge to Kansai International Airport.

The damage to the bridge left the airport cut off from the mainland, with around 3,000 people stranded inside the facility, public broadcaster NHK reported.

[…]

Been on that bridge a few times myself. It’s quite an impressive thing, but scary to think that a tanker could just cut loose and hit it.

First time I was in Osaka a typhoon came over head, but it was a weak one. First (and only) hurricane I’ve been in.

This whole thing is a brain-dead argument.

The swastika was used by Native Americans and Hindus for centuries before Hitler co-opted that symbol. It is now universally associated with Nazism.
