Trying again on the new thread.

re: #214 Brian J.

I imagine they’ll be perfectly happy to let Pressley damage Democratic candidates in other districts they could win. That Ocasio woman has taken ten weeks to go from savior of the Democratic Party to the G. Harrold Carswell defense.

“That Ocasio woman” has a name, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. As for her being the “saviour of the Democratic Party” - who was pushing that? The magic balance fairyist media repeating Republican talking points to scare their base about evul sochulists.

I guarantee there is no one in my whole area of my state who knows who she is, and many across the country already think Democrats are socialists and anti-American anyway here.

Her missteps pale in comparison to Trump’s. She is a first-time House candidate; all candidates make mistakes. Every candidate. Every election.

There seem to be a lot of people who want to pull “that Ocasio woman” apart though. I suppose this is the day Trump became President.

So you don’t believe Congressional candidates should be scrutinized if they are heavily promoted as left-wing. Good to know. That article I linked to was from a BernieBro political reporter, David Roberts, who has been a big promoted of Ocasio and other “Justice Democrats,” and who was finally forced to recognize after repeated idiocies that Ocasio is not right bright. You can only write “what s/he meant to say was” articles so many times before that becomes clear.

I think she’s fantastic. She isn’t one of those “I hate Democrats” Democrats — she embraces being a Democrat and is willing to work with other Democrats. And I agree with more than enough of her policy preferences. New York will be lucky to have her.

Some people hate her because she’s young and pretty, and because she has a Bernie connection. She’s not a Chapo creep, and I say we need more like her.

Ugh, I just went back and read that.

If someone’s going to heap hate and derision on people in politics because they’re young and female, that person is not needed anywhere close to the Democratic Party. Best to find another party that hates young people and women (and people of color).

Yes I believe congressional candidates should be scrutinised, regardless of wing.

The voters in her district scrutinised both candidates in the Democratic primary in her district and found their representative not supportive of their concerns.

As for Ocasio-Cortez being “not that bright” I cannot speak to that. She studied economics and international relations in college (meaning her education is far better than mine) … I presume after the current conservative cruelty burning down our economy and relations, we will need more than a few people who understand those issues.

Capuano isn’t a bad guy, but he has been in Congress 20 years, and it really is past time for more women and people of color to be involved in the government as elected representatives.

And moreover: “scrutinizing” Ayanna Pressley’s resume shows something like a classic progression for a would-be politician: aide/staffer to established pols: election to local office: move up to freshman Representative - if she does a good job for her constituents (and coming up in Boston politics, that’s one lesson only true dummies ignore), she’s probably a lock for several re-elections: and/or a Senate seat possibly someday. Hardly a “know-nothing screamer”…

You might have something of a point about seniority and experience; but unless you think the Democratic bloc in the next Congress is going to consist of 230 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezes, there is likely be enough of that there anyway.

I am confused about one aspect of the Tillman discussion from downstairs:

re: #187 Targetpractice

Tillman was anti-Iraq War, anti-Bush and was planning to meet with Noam Chomsky for an interview after his tour of duty had ended. He was shot three times in the head at close range, his uniform and body armor burned by his squad, and his journal from his time in Iraq remains missing to this day. The Army deliberately lied about his death, even ordering every soldier who met with his family or the press to perpetuate the lie, and congratulated each other in emails about the success in getting the public to buy that lie. The Army even falsified the citations for the medals he received posthumously to claim he was involved in enemy action and so his death was “accidental.”

In other words, Pat Tillman is an excellent example of how a well-run bureaucracy can indeed fabricate the truth to make murderers into heroes. The very sort of evil that Kaepernick has been protesting for years.

This seems to suggest that he was deliberately targeted rather than being a victim of friendly fire. Am I misinterpreting this?

It was; nothing requires the general election be held in November. Now the GOP gets to reap the benefits of their illegal conduct another two years.

Lawrence O’Donnell was talking with Fred Guttenberg. Lawrence said Fred has a nice introduction that he heard Fred give to him at a rally earlier.

Part of it is Fred saying he is the father of Parkland shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg.

The second he mentioned her name and she was a victim Kavanaugh turned and walked away.

Fucker. All he had to do is shake hands and say he was sorry or something.

Mouse, did you get power back?

Partially. While we were at the conference in Denver, the electrician was here and rewired part of our house. We now have many new plug sockets and some of the lights are working again.

We also have a new circuit breaker panel replacing the knife switch that served as our mains switch.

There is still work to do, but much of it is now completed.

About the ‘white power’ hand signal thing.

I saw a post elsewhere saying that if you fold your arms and place them on your lap like she is doing for an extended time, sometimes you do the circle thing with your fingers as a natural reaction. In time that becomes comfortable for your thumb and index.

I have to admit, when I tried it quickly, I ended up with my fingers like that. It surprised me. I did it naturally. And, I did it right off. I’ve never thought about it.

Disclaimer: This was written as nothing more than an observation. I am not a white power advocate. : )

These are generally the same people (Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel and the Nashville Statement). The first signer on the statement tells you where this is going—it’s John MacArthur, who is on record as stating he doesn’t know any “authentic” evangelical church that has a problem with racism.

christianpost.com

MacArthur is a g*d-d*mn*d liar. He’s 79 years old. He knows for damn sure there has been and continues to be racism in the Evangelical church. He’s also got a serious problem. His Master’s University is currently on probation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). You can read the letter and the (much longer) report at this link.

wthrockmorton.com

My buddy Dee Parsons, one of the ladies who runs The Wartburg Watch blog, got hold of a recording MacArthur made recently, basically trying to play down the accreditation issue with his seminary students.

thewartburgwatch.com

The implication of losing one’s top tier accreditation cannot be underestimated. Many of the students who go to Master’s University receive student loans. Without accreditation, Master’s would lose all those students. And it doesn’t have the money to replace what might be lost; the accrediting committee had some raised eyebrows about an expected financial loss.

I recognized several of the other main signers. They are all jackasses, every single one of them.

As has been demonstrated century after century, “the Bible” is whatever anyone wants to make of it.

Contemporary American evangelicalism is dominated by post-Reconstructionism American politics. It just is, and for good reason, as the aftermath of the Civil War has greatly defined what we think of as “America”.

Sorry, I had to duck out to grab a shower and get to work. But yes, the implication of the evidence is that the Army either knew Tillman had been “fragged” or feared the public reaching that conclusion once the evidence was revealed. The destruction/disappearance of evidence, altering official reports and citations, forcing soldiers to repeat lies to maintain the fiction, and the lies told to the family when they pretty much already knew the truth. If his death wasn’t a deliberate act, the Army certainly did everything in their power to make it look like it was.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a long-term trend that could dramatically reduce birth rates and seriously disrupt human populations. We know that currently most developed countries have birth rates below replacement level, generally because of decisions by couples to limit family size. But there may also be a component due to decreased fertility as a result of environmental factors.

All sorts of things were made of plastic, even then. Teflon coated virtually every piece of cookware. All sorts of toys for children were (and are) made of plastic. As noted in the article sex toys (including then) are made primarily of plastic.

My typewriter (manufactured in 1914) has plastic keys.

Non-existent environmental regulations ensured that plastics manufacturers did not have to do anything at all.

“I don’t know why they don’t take care of a situation like that,” Trump said. “I think it’s embarrassing for the country to allow protesters. You don’t even know what side the protesters are on.”

He added: “In the old days, we used to throw them out. Today, I guess they just keep screaming.”

He came just short of calling for protest to be made illegal, but his intent is quite clear.

And the whole protest issue is connected to football, whereby we must not forget that list of highest-paid public jobs per state, most of them are football or basketball coaches. We are dealing with a conflation of sports, religion and patriotism here.

Jim Bakker, Roger Stone etc. Not named, but obviously included, is child molester and draft dodger Ted Nugent. Interesting that foul-mouthed degenerates like Stone and Ted Nugent now count as “Evangelical.”

Yet despite the scandal and the criminality, conservative Christians cotinue to support Trump in overwhelming numbers. A PRRI poll conducted in early August found that among white evangelicals, 79 percent vigorously oppose the calls to impeach Trump.

The poll numbers are in line with a Five Thirty Eight report on national exit polls after the 2016 election showing that 81 percent of white evangelical voters voted for Trump, the widest margin for a Republican presidential candidate ever among evangelicals since they began tracking the numbers.

So, here was my day, the third of the new term.

Went to my first class. Pleased that the new computers work fine. Displeased to find my USB stick was infected with a virus, rendering it temporarily useless. Class went well, nevertheless.

Went to office. Our office assistants tell me the dean, vice dean and secretary of the Foreign Language College will come in 20 minutes to meet with me. They tell me that our program needs to move out of one of our two offices and pack all 10 of us into one office. I’m agreeable, but we need to clear it with the head of our program (my boss, IOW). He is not pleased At. All.

Went home for lunch. Downloaded my necessary files to another USB stick. Went to afternoon class. All is good. Return to office, to find the office assistants have been moving furniture, etc., from office 2 to office 1. Our boss lost the argument with the dean. Fixed my infected USB stick. Signed about a dozen drop/add forms. Moved my computer and stuff from office 2 to office 1. Sent emails to teachers advising them of the move. Helped move the printer/photocopier from office 2 to office 1. Left work at 6:30 pm.

Did I tell you I became a manager of our teaching unit? Now you know.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s another heat wave and I’m totally ready for fall. Can’t stand this kind of oppressive humidity and temps.

But that’s minor inconveniences compared to the fact that the GOP continues to do nothing to stop a corrupt and craven administration undoing environmental regulations, consumer protections, and are about to rubber stamp a guy hand picked by right wing extremists to gut women’s rights, health coverage for tens of millions of Americans, and gut civil and voting rights, so rich white guys can get even richer while the angry white guys are supposed to stay angry because nonwhites are still around.

Everything the GOP is doing is through a lens of white nationalism and misogyny, and they’re not even hiding it anymore.

The Woodward book is just the latest to confirm that Trumpworld is a shitshow and that everyone handles Trump like a goddamned toddler. There aren’t any adults in the room.

If there were, they would have already used the 25A, but Trump surrounded himself with yes men who will do his bidding, even if it’s bugnuts insanity. The few who think they’re doing the nation’s business are too busy trying to swipe papers off Trump’s desk to keep him from starting wars or doing even more unconscionable acts.

These aren’t the acts of a sane administration. These aren’t the acts of a rational administration. They’ve put power and corrupt acts that enrich themselves above all else, and the GOP has enabled this, because the one thing they want more than anything else is to pack the courts for a generation to come. McConnell’s long con has worked out so well, given that they’ve flipped the court for a generation to come so even if they lose the House, they can still pack the courts. The Senate is likely to remain in GOP control, which means that they will continue to pack the courts. There isn’t much you can do when so many don’t get out and vote as if your lives depended on it.

And there are far too many people who don’t think this is the case.

Woodward is an old school muckraker, not one of these lame taking head news analysts on TV or a journalist in name only like Maggie Haberman.

A real journalist makes sure he’s got all the receipts and recordings and whatever else to back up his story before a single word gets published. This will not end well for those who are calling him a liar.

Unshaken Defiance  Sep 5, 2018 • 6:38:10am

While our attention is focused on the hearings, this is happening.
Russian Forces Flood Into The Med Ahead Of Syrian Offensive, Here’s Everything You Need To Know

We at The War Zone have already detailed the wild, conspiratorial accusations the Russians have made against the United States and the United Kingdom both, accusing them, without evidence, of seeking to stage chemical weapon attacks as a pretext to strike at Assad. These unfounded allegations have continued and reflect a now typical Russian information operation that seeks to deflect and distract from its own activities in Syria, as well as those of Assad and simply muddy the waters as to the true state of the situation in contested areas, such as Idlib. We saw a similar escalation in rhetoric and accusations in the lead up to the U.S.-led cruise missile barrage in April 2018.

What is different this time around is that the Russians have deployed a massive amount of military aircraft and warships into and around the eastern Mediterranean. Though the Kremlin’s official reasoning for this is that it is simply carrying out a training exercise, the entire maneuver looks well suited to provide support to the Syrian regime and an obstacle to any U.S.-led strikes against Assad… The Slava-class guided missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov, which can carry up to 16 P-1000 Vulkan supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles and 64 long-range surface-to-air missiles across eight individual S-300F systems.
Udaloy-class destroyer Severomorsk, with the Metel missile system, which can carry up to eight anti-submarine or anti-ship missiles, as well as 64 short-to-medium range 3K95 surface-to-air missiles.
At least three Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates, each of which can carry up to eight Kalibr land-attack cruise missiles.
At least two Kilo-class submarines, which can also fire Kalibrs.
Tu-160 White Swan supersonic strategic bombers, also known as Blackjacks, which can carry Kh-101 air-launched land attack cruise missiles.
Tu-142MK Bear and Il-38 May maritime patrol aircraft, which can carry various anti-submarine weapons.
Russian Naval Aviation Su-30SM and Su-33 fighter jets, which could provide combat air patrols to defend the task force against any notional aerial attack or carry anti-ship cruise missiles to carry out their own maritime strikes.

This gives Trump coverage-Too much force to pick a fight, so he can pretend outrage as more civilians (edit) perish in the upcoming offensive. Iran, Syria, Russia, maybe Turkey Vs US & allied forces? We won’t do more than whine. Not while Trump is sending surrender offers to the Taliban.

It’s not that they work against the gerrymandering party, it’s that they can be overcome in a wave election and, as you said, safe seats can fall.

In the wave election of 1994, the incumbent Democrat in Illinois 5th Congressional district, Dan Rostenkowski, lost a safe seat by about 8%. In the following election, the Democrats regained the seat by a 29% margin with Blagojevich. And in 1998, Blago was reelected by 48%.

This turn of events isn’t just worrying for Macron, it’s worrying for those in Europe’s pro-globalisation camp who placed their faith in him to halt the wave of populism sweeping the western world. For them, after the twin shocks of the UK’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election in the United States, Macron simply must succeed. The slide in his popularity - Macron is now more unpopular than his predecessor, François Hollande, at the same stage - is a dire warning to “globalists”. It comes at a time when Trump’s popularity among his voters is relatively stable by comparison and the American economy is growing. Macron’s fate could have far-reaching consequences for Europe’s political future.

I really hope he can turn this around. I worry about what can happen if he doesn’t.

This is why I hate all the military worship and bullshit cheerleading about how much integrity and honor there is in the military. It is just like the old high school shit about “my school is better than your school just because it is, so there”. The fucking armed forces need to cut out the propagandizing of how fucking special they are and start actually doing what they say they are. Stop the raping of female personnel. Stop the lying. Stop the coverups. Until they admit that they are no goddammed better than any other element of society, they won’t BE any better than any other element of society. Have you noticed lately how many “Navy Seals” are corrupt? Former governor of Missouri, the secretary of the interior, there’s another one who is a rep whose staff forged signatures, a few more I can’t name off the top. Navy Seals may be physically talented, they may even be smart, but they sure as hell don’t police their own and they have some real skunks among them. Of course, also General Flynn? General Kelly? Fuck your supposed honor and integrity. Take honest stock, be forthright, and get to work to be what you purport to be. Fuckers.
