The real dangerous window will be if the GOP loses the House this November; starting in the days after the election until the new Congress is sworn in, they’ll try to ram through as much as they can before the Democrats take over in January.

Howdy y’all. Yesterday marked my eleventh wedding anniversary. Today we are celebrating in Discordian fashion with hot dogs. (Yesterday was Friday, but we were busy elsewhere.)

Irony is dead:

FDA recalls all King Bio homeopathic products that use water over contamination concerns (USA Today, more at the link):

Homeopathic drug maker King Bio is recalling all products for children, adults and pets that use water over concerns of possible purity issues.

This is the third expanded product recall for the Asheville, North Carolina, company, which makes products such as Dr. King’s Children’s Cough Relief, Dr. King’s Children’s Ear Relief Formula and Dr. King’s Cold Sore treatment.

Last month, King Bio recalled Aquaflora Candida HP9, Lymph Detox and Baby Teething liquids for possible microbial contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Then last week, the company expanded that to 32 more products including Dr. King’s Baby Colic Relief and Dr. King’s Natural Medicine Children’s Cough Relief, the FDA says.

The Week In Garbage Men: Going Carnivore To Own The Libs, Alex Jones Gets Gone, And A New MGTOW Hero (Wonkette, with more in this article like this):

Last month, Jordan Peterson swung by the Joe Rogan show to talk about his new carnivore diet — in which he eats nothing but beef and salt and water. As a result of this “diet,” Peterson claimed that drinking one glass of apple juice caused him to not sleep for 25 days, which is actually completely impossible because if you did not sleep for 25 days, you would die. He says he has embraced this diet — which his daughter Mikhaila is an advocate of — for “health reasons.”

Since then, those inspired by literally everything Peterson does have since also taken up this diet, in hopes that it will restore their masculinity (???) and piss of liberals. I guess because they think we are all vegetarians?

The Daily Beast’s Kelly Weill, who reported on the trend earlier this month, discussed it on Mother Jones’ Bite podcast this week, explaining why fringe right-wingers like Gab founder Andrew Torba have taken up the trend.

A lot of conservatives are very worried about losing their status as a white person or losing economic status. And I think there’s maybe a similar current with practitioners of this diet—really feeling like, ‘Somebody’s going to take away my meat.’ It’s symbolic to them; it’s an element of their masculinity and their identity.

Good god that’s sad.

Welcome to 1968, Lubbock Power and Light! I still have an account with these lame idiots because I still have property in their shithole but I STILL cannot log onto their website. I have to call them and change my password every single time I try. This requires a phone call because they keep asking security questions for which I have never provided answers; “what is your favorite food?” etc.
This has gone on since they changed to their new, amateur designed site over a year ago. I do not have this kind of problem with any other website. At this point, I am giving up entirely and will do business with these goobers the old-fashioned way.
It really looks like they are singling me out for harassment and obstruction. I would normally not think such a thing, but it is Lubbock and childish unprofessional behavior is the norm for management there. It is how they assert status. They wonder why cheap labor is the only effective appeal they have for new business.

You cannot save a password on the LP&L website because Windows will save the security question answers as passwords, that is, their coding is such that Windows cannot distinguish between security questions and passwords. Their old site worked perfectly btw, but they went all new for no discernible reason. I have to wonder just what kind of cronyism was involved in designing this abomination. Btw, LP&L has the harshest termination policies I have ever heard of in the United States. They will cut off your water if you are a month late paying any of your assorted utilities.

Ultimately, Collins lost the interview portion of the contest to Miss Massachusetts, Gabriela Taveras, who fielded a question about how Americans traveling abroad should interact with foreigners. We should let them know that “we as Americans are supporting them and that we are there to help them,” she suggested, according to The Associated Press.

But Collins’ response captured a new, evolving spirit of the competition, coming on the heels of another headline-making response from the night before. On Thursday, when asked how the NFL should handle players kneeling during the national anthem, Miss Virginia, Emili McPhail, emphasized that the protests are not anti-patriotic, but are “absolutely about police brutality.”

“Kneeling during the national anthem is absolutely a right that you have, to stand up for what you believe in, and to make the right decision that’s right for you,” she said. Following the competition, McPhail added: “I said standing up for what you believe in is the most important thing that you can do, and that’s what I did. I was very happy to have that moment, to be honest, because it’s not always easy.”

The NFL protests have enraged President Donald Trump, who once owned the Miss Universe pageant, a separate organization. Although the president has yet to respond to either contestant’s answer, Collins’ rebuke of Trump takes on added significance, considering that she hails from a reliably conservative state often said to be “the heart of Trump country.”

Tuned into the game for a few minutes. No change in the score but TTU did have, not one, but two, touchdowns called back for penalties in 3 plays. In their embarrassing loss to Ole Miss last week, the Red Rioters had two players ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. I don’t know if these were among the various players who were arrested for an assortment of offenses during the off-season.

I was into building transistor radios as a kid. They talked about the size of the antenna affecting the reception. I figured, if I tie into the house’s ground wiring, that oughta give me a massive antenna, right? The ultimate in reception! When I disconnected the antenna wire one time and I saw a bright flash and the end of the wire was burned away right up to where my fingertips had been, I realized how close of a call I’d had.

They used to sell a little high-pass filter you could plug into an outlet and attach your TV’s leadin to it, to use all your wiring as an antenna. I never tried it, because it seems like that would be completely omnidirectional, which is the absolute last thing you want in a TV antenna.

You can also use your power wiring as an Ethernet network, presumably by using the 60 Hz alternating current as a carrier wave of some sort. I’ve never looked at the technical details.

Well, that depends on where the television stations are located. Recall that VHF TV antennas were sold as these boxy square things which were omnidirectional. Rotating directional antennas are a whole lot more expensive.

TV antennas are always directional—Yagis mainly, although Radio Shack liked Franklin Feeders. If you didn’t have a rotator, you didn’t want the really directional ones, but you needed some directionality to avoid receiving as many reflections—ghosts—as you could. FM radio too, though there the problem is called “multipath distortion” rather than “ghosts”.

Brain getting too old. As I recall, the boxy square VHF antennas were actually stacked directional antennas which could not be moved. (Trying to remember way back to the late Sixties when I was a kid and we had one of those. That and I haven’t owned a television in decades.)

I had a friend that worked in cable TV and he gave me these two adapter boxes that you would plug into an ordinary 110 outlet.

They had network cable connection sockets. Hook up two computers, one into each outlet and you (supposedly) had a network.

The boxes were a bit larger than a wall outlet cover and probably an inch and half thick.

I thought it all suspicious and never did use them.

I have some. They work, but it’s a low-bitrate connection.

Brain getting too old. As I recall, the boxy square VHF antennas were actually stacked directional antennas which could not be moved. (Trying to remember way back to the late Sixties when I was a kid and we had one of those. That and I haven’t owned a television in decades.)

Usually there was only one dipole “driven element” which would give you a fat figure-8 pattern. There would be passive elements—shorter “directors” in front to narrow the front lobe, and longer “reflectors” in back to reduce the rear lobe. The more elements, the more directional. And the more expensive.

I’ve been thinking about doing that to run from one side of my house to the other to hard-wire together the two main points of network access. I have the modem and router, the basement TV, and my PC in the basement on one side, and then on the other side upstairs I have the Mrs. Fish’s PC and the gaming consoles. Those currently run on wireless, but I’d love to get them onto a wired network… but that would be a disgusting run if I’m running fresh CAT5.

There is an issue as to which of the hot legs you are connected to but I never ran into that problem. Not sure I really understand it. blah blah 220 volts to your breaker box splits into two 110 legs blah blah and you want the 110 circuits you plug the devices into to be on the same leg blah blah.

Not arguing his record or his views (both, she argued, would matter not because he’d follow the law), but arguing that he’d been so nice to her in the past that she felt he deserved a spot on the SCOTUS bench.

Yeah I saw that too. And you know what? I believe her story but there’s a lot more examples of him being a dick and showing himself to value the interests of the Republican Party above the law in his career. And frankly his lying in 2006 should have gotten him denied his current position.

re: #185 HappyWarrior

I don’t know Kavanaugh personally. I only know him by his actions as a judge, Bush appointee, & Starr staffer. His career is filled with indecent behavior and actions far from honorable. He’s also a judicial partisan extremist to boot.

Kavanaugh returned to public service in the early 2000s and helped select and support some of President Bush’s most far-right judicial nominees as the right-hand man to then White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales. Kavanaugh is said to have championed Priscilla Owen’s Fifth Circuit confirmation. Just this year, Owen defended the improper sentencing of an immigrant convicted of unlawful reentry. Kavanaugh is also tied to failed D.C. Circuit nominee Miguel Estrada, who was filibustered seven times before his troubling right-wing record finally forced him to withdraw from consideration.

As Kavanaugh’s White House service neared its end, Terri Schiavo’s story went from a painfully personal family moment to a Florida headline to a vicious, public battle championed by the Republican Party and the far Right. Schiavo died in hospice care on March 31, 2005 when her feeding tube was removed after more than a decade in a persistent vegetative state. Kavanaugh is said to be the one who woke President Bush so that he could sign off on congressional intervention aimed at putting the tube back in.

On some MSNBC show last night they were playing clips from Texas talk radio, where somebody was yammering on about Beto, calling it ‘Hispandering’ for him to go by Beto.

I thought, “You realize he’s up against a guy whose name is Rafael, but who goes by ‘Ted’, right?

Haha yeah. I mean it’s okay that Cruz goes by Ted rather than Rafael but man talk about pot calling kettle black. And Beto’s been Beto since he was a teen.

Why Jones made allies with Trump is even more interesting to me. Here’s a guy who seems to have at least been bipartisanly consistent in his paranoia about the Executive Branch who embraces it when Trump gets to power. . Frankly, I think Jones and many “libertarians” like him are actually fascists. And I think Rand Paul let the mask slip when he demanded the lie detector tests for the Op-Ed writer. And I use libertarian in quotes because these people aren’t libertarians. I don’t like libertarianism but Jones, Paul, and those like him are actually paleo-con retrograde assholes.

Exactly and you know what, he seems great for a partisan operative but not one of the nine judges who will decide the cases that impact our laws. He’s a partisan with a hard on for protecting the Executive and that I am certain is why Trump chose him.

Alex Jones is somewhere in the derp zone where left and right fall off the edge of the flat earth and mingle together. He allied with Trump because he knew that Trump’s derpy base would soak up his conspiracy message. That’s how you know how bad things are with the GOP, when Stone’s a headliner. He was busy calling the ongoing investigations into Trumpworld a canard and left wing conspiracy.

Yeah, the indictments, guilty pleas, convictions, and more to come are a conspiracy, but not the one Stone wants the know nothings that ignore reality to think.

The conspiracy is the one Trumpworld brought with it into the WH - the criminal syndicate that Trump headed and enabled through his ongoing actions. As people dig into his business dealings, the more criminality and wrongdoing is discovered. The more we look at Trump’s campaign, the more wrongdoing is discovered. This was a criminal enterprise, and Stone’s also likely to be caught up in it.

Snopes discussed it.

Out of 1500 Subway franchises in the UK and Ireland, 200 of them chose to substitute turkey bacon and other turkey products instead of pork. Those 200 halal shops have stickers in the window so customers will know. Subway Corp doesn’t own all those stores, they’re franchises. Presumably in locations where some significant percentage of the potential customer base will care. There’s also a few kosher Subways; again, because they’re located where that’ll bring lots more customers than if you don’t. None of the US Subways are halal or kosher.

There’s 180 McDonalds in Israel; 50 of them are kosher. The rest are not.

The Bush Administration didn’t “allow” it to happen. He promoted it, along with Jeb Bush and the rest of the Republican caucus.

The Palm Sunday Compromise, formally known as the Act for the relief of the parents of Theresa Marie Schiavo, is an Act of Congress passed on March 21, 2005, to allow the case of Terri Schiavo to be moved into a federal court. The name “Palm Sunday Compromise” was coined by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, referring to it having been passed on Palm Sunday.

All of the federal petitions and appeals of Terri Schiavo’s parents to maintain her life support were denied, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to grant certiorari. In addition to this specific United States federal legislation, there was extensive other government involvement in the Terri Schiavo case at the Florida state and federal levels, none of which ultimately prevented the removal of her feeding tube.

David Brock spills the beans on Brett Kavanaugh

Concluding paragraph:

But I don’t need to see any documents to tell you who Kavanaugh is — because I’ve known him for years. And I’ll leave it to all the lawyers to parse Kavanaugh’s views on everything from privacy rights to gun rights. But I can promise you that any pretense of simply being a fair arbiter of the constitutionality of any policy regardless of politics is simply a pretense. He made up his mind nearly a generation ago — and, if he’s confirmed, he’ll have nearly two generations to impose it upon the rest of us.

But it really shouldn’t be surprising, as wingnuts love and idolize bullies and one of the things bullies hate with a passion is when those they’re beating upon begin to fight back. The same people who insist Donny’s constant attacks on the press are his “punching back” think that the black man should just shut up and take the beating.

Former President Jimmy Carter, responding to criticism from President Reagan, said tonight that while his Administration made mistakes, ”we did not spend four years blaming our mistakes on our predecessors.”

Mr. Carter told reporters he was responding to criticism by the President at his news conference Tuesday night on the Carter Administration’s management of the economy. Mr. Reagan blamed the Carter Administration for the current recession and said that when he took office, ”we found America in the worst economic mess since the days of Franklin Roosevelt.”

Mr. Carter accused Mr. Reagan of not accepting his responsibilities. The former President said that after his defeat in 1980, he resolved to pledge Mr. Reagan ”my help, my support when he was ready to accept the awesome reponsibilities of the Presidency.”

He has been corrected on the Electoral College number repeatedly. He is getting it wrong on purpose, that is, lying. Lying about something so trivial.

More on previous presidents criticising former presidents:

Indeed, there have been several instances of “when ex-presidents attack” over the years. As recently as a few months ago, former President Gerald R. Ford criticized Mr. Bush’s Iraq policy, albeit from the grave. In an article in The Washington Post, Bob Woodward quoted from an interview he conducted with Mr. Ford with the understanding that he could only publish Mr. Ford’s remarks after he died.

Eisenhower was critical of John F. Kennedy’s domestic policies, the first President Bush pounded on Bill Clinton, now his pal, for his Haiti policy, and Nixon chided the first President Bush (for comparing himself to Harry Truman in his 1992 re-election campaign).

Theodore Roosevelt was brutal in his assaults on Taft and Woodrow Wilson, said Patricia O’Toole, author of “When Trumpets Call,” a book about Roosevelt in the years after he left office. She pointed out, however, that Roosevelt would run for president again, putting him in something of a different category than Mr. Carter (who by all accounts will not).

Ha. It was the Palm Sunday travesty in the Schiavo case that brought me back to politics after a dormant period. Watching Bill Frist diagnose via videotape and Rick Santorum run his ignorant mouth among other asshole Republicans really got me going. And don’t even get me started on Frank Pavone and his ghouls and what they did; and how they vilified Judge Greer. Grrrr—it makes me mad just to think about it.

And—although I know she’s done some stupid shit since then, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was truly a star during that bogus midnight madness.

Poor confused poster has his terminology wrong. A zygote implanted weeks ago, that’s how it got to be a zygote. He’s thinking of embryos.

ETA: later in the thread, he tries “genetically distinct human organism” as the relevant criteria. So I guess in his mind, my brothers (60-year-old identical twins) still don’t qualify for personhood.
