Mother Jones Catches GOP Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher and Matt Gaetz Hanging Out With Holocaust Denier Chuck C. Johnson AGAIN

In the Trump era, Republican politicians no longer have any compunctions about associating with the absolute dregs of the political landscape. Today’s case in point, from David Corn at Mother Jones: Two Republican Congressmen Hobnob With an Alleged Holocaust Denier. Again.

(LGF’s coverage of Chuck C. Johnson’s noxious career is featured prominently.)

A Republican congressman who earlier this year got into trouble for hobnobbing with an accused Holocaust denier held a small fundraiser this summer, and the attendees included, yes, the very same alleged Holocaust denier. Also at the event was another GOP congressman who, too, had previously been criticized for associating with this fellow.

In January, Rep. Matt Gaetz, a conservative Republican firebrand from Florida, invited right-wing troll Charles C. Johnson to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech. Johnson, a notorious social media figure accused of being a white nationalist, had been permanently banned from Twitter for declaring that he wanted to “take out” a leader of Black Lives Matter. And in early 2017, Johnson had come under fire for denying the Holocaust. During an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit’s alt-right section, Johnson had been queried, “what are your thoughts on the Holocaust, WW2, and the JQ in general?” (“JQ” is neo-Nazi shorthand for the Jewish Question.) Johnson replied, “I do not and never have believed the six million figure. I think the Red Cross numbers of 250,000 dead in the camps from typhus are more realistic. I think the Allied bombing of Germany was a ware [sic] crime. I agree…about Auschwitz and the gas chambers not being real.”

[…]

Eventually, the controversy over Johnson attending the State of the Union passed. But two months ago, Gaetz and Johnson were together again—this time on a yacht in Newport Beach, California. The occasion was a July 20 fundraiser for Gaetz’s reelection campaign. According to people familiar with the event, Johnson was among the group on the boat. And Rohrabacher was there, too. The event was being held in Rohrabacher’s district, and Rohrabacher spoke on behalf of Gaetz.

Referring to Johnson’s presence at the event, Jason Pitkin, Rohrabacher’s campaign finance director, who attended the fundraiser, tells Mother Jones, “I don’t remember who invited him there.” Asked whether Johnson had come at the invitation of Gaetz, Kip Talley, the chief of staff for Gaetz’s reelection campaign, replied in an email, “It was a private event and you’re welcome to check the FEC reports to see who donated. Thanks for reaching out.”

Johnson declined multiple requests for comment.

My only nit to pick with this article is that we can drop “alleged” from the “Holocaust denier” description, since Johnson (who is NOT ME) made these comments publicly, more than once.

Imagine if 9/11 happened on Trump’s watch, though really that’s what this death toll means - a 9/11s-worth of Americans died.

Trump’s going to regret that tweet. As he should, the heartless son of a bitch.

Is there any evidence he’s ever regretted ANYTHING?

I’ll say this: for months and months and months now, I’ve been watching him make an ass of himself on Twitter without ever really being surprised. All his paranoia and disconnection from reality and self-aggrandizement - we knew all that about him, at least if we’d read David Cay Johnston’s stuff or had followed the NYC tabloids or watched Rachel regularly.

His “no, 3000 people didn’t really die” thing this morning? That was new, even for him.

re: #1 Blind Frog Belly White

3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000…

Imagine if 9/11 happened on Trump’s watch, though really that’s what this death toll means - a 9/11s-worth of Americans died.

this whole line of argument is moronic hair splitting and rhetorical word play

i havent read the report. i am guessing that it does not say that 3000 puerto ricans died “in” the hurricanes

they died as a result of the poor response by the federal government (a-plus my ass) after the hurricane. proxmiate cause, though ianal

Nah, he’s still a total douche bag:

“Trump’s denial of the official death toll from Hurricane Maria is absurd and gross, even though there is uncertainty in the death count,” Shapiro tweeted.

The Daily Wire editor-in-chief shared a link to an article in which he noted there are multiple estimates of how many people died as a result of Hurricane Maria, but disputed Trump’s assertion that the original tally of a few dozen deaths was more accurate.

“The official Puerto Rican count isn’t guaranteed, by any measure. But it’s surely higher than the original count, and it’s absurd for Trump to claim otherwise,” Shapiro wrote.

And in his “criticism” of Trump there’s a whole lot of “blame the locals” and “we can’t really be sure” and “how do you even count indirect deaths” and all the typical bullshit you’d expect from Ben.

Alan Levine is still excusing Trump’s actual behavior after the hurricane struck. He is pretending that Trump had nothing to do with the elevated count. Certainly, it is possible that given the destruction of the hurricane and the inadequate infrastructure, there still would have been many deaths, but there is no evidence that Trump actually cared about Puerto Rico or made any efforts to improve the response to this catastrophe.

Residents see a failure at all levels of government: via political-wire.com

A new Washington Post-KFF poll found that nearly one year after Hurricane Maria, many Puerto Ricans are still struggling with basic necessities.

The survey found that a full 83% of residents said they have suffered either major property damage, long-term loss of electricity, employment setbacks or worsening health problems.

Key takeaways: 93% of residents said their roads and highways remain dangerous and 50% said their households lacked an adequate supply of drinking water.

Via Balloon Juice. I hadn’t been paying much attention to Les Moonves, but it sounds like he went on a Trump level of purging of women from CBS. This Linda Bloodworth Thomason, creator of Designing Women:

I was never sexually harassed or attacked by Les Moonves. My encounters were much more subtle, engendering a different kind of destruction…

During that period, because my contract was so valuable, I continued trying to win over Moonves. And he continued turning down every pilot I wrote. Often, if he would catch me in the parking lot, he would make sure to tell me that my script was one of the best he’d read but that he had decided, in the end, not to do it. It always seemed that he enjoyed telling me this. Just enough to keep me in the game. I was told he refused to give my scripts to any of the stars he had under contract. Then, I began to hear from female CBS employees about his mercurial, misogynist behavior, with actresses being ushered in and out of his office. His mantra, I was told, was, “Why would I wanna cast ‘em if I don’t wanna fuck ‘em?”

People asked me for years, “Where have you been? What happened to you?” Les Moonves happened to me.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, I was walking the halls one day in the original CBS building. In spite of no longer having gainful employment, I still felt proud that I had been allowed to make a creative contribution to the network I had grown up with — starting with Lucy and Ethel, who had electrified me and inspired me to write comedy. I never dreamed that I would become the first woman, along with my then-writing partner, Mary Kay Place, to write for M*A*S*H. I took pride in being part of a network that always seemed to be rife with crazy, interesting, brash women, from Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda, to Maude, to Murphy Brown, to the Designing Women. Many of these female characters paved the way for women to be single, to pursue careers and equal pay and to lead rich, romantic lives with reproductive rights.

As I walked, I noticed that the portraits of all these iconic women were no longer adorning the walls. I don’t know why and I didn’t ask. I just know that the likes of them have rarely been seen on that network again. Thanks to Les Moonves, I can only guess they all became vaginal swabs in crime labs on CSI Amarillo…

And as for you, Mr. Moonves, in spite of the fact that I was raised to be a proper Southern female, and with your acknowledgement that I have never, in my life, spoken a single cross word to you, despite the way you treated me, may I simply say, channeling my finest Julia Sugarbaker delivery: “Go fuck yourself!”

Edited the name

re: #241 sagehen

“Bombing the storm” is an idea he got from Sharknado.

Actually, that was a programme of the US government in the Sixties through the Eighties. It was thought that dropping mass quantities in the eyes of hurricanes would reduce their intensity (by creating supercooled water in the eye, reducing its temperature and causing the eyewall to collapse).

As we understood hurricanes better, we learned eyewall replacement cycles are natural.

Like much of what Trump wants (coal, &c) he wants to go back to debunked or harmful things in the past.

Six dead, including gunman, in Bakersfield, California, shooting spree

A shooting rampage that left five people dead in Bakersfield, California, on Wednesday was linked to domestic violence and ended with the suspect turning the gun on himself as deputies closed in, officials said.

A final image of the shooter — identified as Javier Casarez, 54 — was captured on a deputy’s body camera and shown during a news conference Thursday in which authorities described how the shooting spree unfolded over less than 40 minutes and spanned five crime scenes.

on the shooting of Botham Jean

First, she claimed that she had put her things down as she struggled with the key to the apartment and was startled when Jean opened the door. Then she claimed that the door to the apartment was already partially open and when she saw “a large silhouette” in the apartment, she shouted “verbal commands” which were ignored, prompting her to fire her service weapon.

none of this works - its a super quick escalation to deadly force when there were many intermediate options

if it’s the first scenario, “he opened the door”, then why didnt she stay out of the apartment, call for help? double check where she was. she could have just shot her own relative

if the second, and she had advanced a few steps in, step back out of the apartment

you cannot clearly identify a threat from a large silhouette (unless next it’s ‘i thought ‘he’ had a gun’). she could not have been sure what she was shooting at. she should not have.

verbal commands ignored, step back. no imminent threat.

I think it will occur like this: If either switch, the Democrats do their own investigation and continue to support Mueller. I would suggest that they file a bill protecting Mueller. If they take both, continue. When Mueller’s findings come out, if they implicate Trump, publicly push for it, privately keep courting Republicans. Don’t trying ipeachment until the Senate is close to a 2/3 count. And us Democrats will have to stand by whatever they do.

it depends on how clear and convincing the report is - a lot of reactions will be based on how devastating it is - how hard to sweep it all aside with “concern” etc

I was just looking up the Andrew Johnson impeachment, the tenth and eleventh articles were:

Making three speeches with intent to “attempt to bring into disgrace, ridicule, hatred, contempt and reproach, the Congress of the United States”.

Bringing disgrace and ridicule to the presidency by his aforementioned words and actions.

Those seem like the sort of articles that should get unanimous support in Congress for this idiot. That said, it looks like everyone knew what the results were going to be going in. Similar to Clinton, though in his case, I remember the exact numbers being a bit more up in the air.

Just arrived.

Got mine on Kindle last night. I THINK I went to Amazon from the associate link, so that helps LGF. Bought it on Mrs. FBW’s Prime account. Then I couldn’t figure how to get it downloaded to MY iPhone’s Kindle app.

Numerous tries on the iPhone later, I said, “Fuck this.” and went to my computer, where in only 5 minutes I resolved it. iPhones have their limitations.

First thoughts: If a bus ran over Steve Bannon, I wouldn’t shed a tear.

For my part, I wanted to see Manafort burn for what he has done to my friends in Ukraine. But if it leads to Trump in an orange jumpsuit, I will hold my nose and grit my teeth…

Years ago, before John Stossel went around the bend, he did a show on risk, and people’s inability to correctly perceive it. He did a segment with an audience, and he said, “What if I told you there’s a new energy source, cleaner and more efficient than electricity, but if we use it, it will kill 100 people every year?”

Most of the audience said that would not be acceptable. “What if it were 10 people?”

Still some folks said that would be too many. One said that EVEN ONE would be too many.

At this point, Stossel said he’d played a trick on them, that the energy source already existed and was used in homes throughout America. It’s called Natural Gas, and it actually kills a 1000 people a year.

That’s not really an inability to perceive risk. That’s more an ignorance of current risk vs potential risk. If you don’t know what the current risk is, it’s hard to judge what the potential risk would be.

Sort of. But that example is based almost entirely on lack of information. Obviously, if you don’t have all the information (or even a reasonable amount), you can’t properly perceive the risk. It’s like crossing the street blindfolded, there’s a lot more risk on PCH than there is on a residential street. If you don’t know what street you’re crossing, you can’t calculate the risk and thus come to the conclusion “it’s too dangerous.”

When we heard where these explosions were, we immediately called friends of ours who had just moved to Andover in July. They said they had been told it was a “pressurization” problem relating to work done on a nearby gas line, and that they shouldn’t turn on any lights or appliances, just to be safe.

So Guyger gets home after an abnormally long shift and “accidentally” parks on the wrong level of her apartment building. Then she “accidentally” misses the big red mat when going to the apartment she believes is hers. She notices a door ajar that residents have demonstrated automatically closes, draws her firearm, and enters under the belief that she’s being robbed. She confronts a “silhouette” in darkness so absolute she can’t identify them but they’re supposed to recognize she’s a uniformed police officer, gives verbal orders to “it,” and then when the orders are not obeyed fires two shots that kill the “burglar.” And she manages to find a phone in the total darkness and immediately dials 911, only turning on a light when the 911 dispatcher on the other end asks for her address because she’d totally forgotten where she lives in the heat of the moment. And the man she shot and ultimately killed happens to have a baggie of weed that’s found when a search of his apartment is conducted under the umbrella of a murder investigation.

If you believe that that is the absolute truth, then you’re a Trump voter.

Just as with the “empty bags” that they’d been told were found in Trayvon Martin’s backpack, the purpose is to put the family on the defensive by making it look like their loved one was a “crook” and they’re “covering it up” with an eye to “cash in.” Before this ever sees trial, the defense wants to turn it into another “thug vs virtuous defender of justice” narrative.

What someone called the “N****rization” of Trayvon - they had to make him into a “Thug”, and not a suburban teenager out for a walk.

It was in open court records. The Dallas News reported it as well. they didn’t lead with it though.

I’m about to completely give up on TPM. I don’t begrudge anyone monetizing their site, but now in addition to the multiple video ads on the pages with stories, now there’s a popup ad with autoplay that shows up on every single page. And while that video is loading, nothing else on the page works.

Maybe they figure if they make free viewing annoying enough, people will spring for their subscription service.

One of the episodes of Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story touched on that. How the conservative media led by Ann Coulter, Megyn Kelly, Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity, Ben Shapiro, Jim Hoft, Steven Crowder, Dennis Prager, and Brent Bozell tried to assassinate the character of Martin and his family. How Trayvon “stole” the Skittles and Arizona tea, and when that was disproven he was going to make “purple lean” with them. And how he was “casing” the neighborhood for robbery, and “stalking” George Zimmerman. And how they attacked his father Tracy Martin, by accusing him of being a Crip gang member because of some neck tattoo. They were throwing everything at the Martin’s but the kitchen sink.

And at the same time making that hothead asshole Zimmerman out to be a concerned neighbor and not the guy who you know can’t stay out of trouble since his acquittal.

It’s not that they believe Trump is mentally sound, it’s that they believe he’s the most mentally sound. Just like how he believes he’s the most intelligent and in best shape of any President. There’s no room in between for him. But somehow FNC convinced millions of our fellow Americans that Obama was a narcissistic heathen and this asshole was a humble, quiet man of faith.

No. Asset forfeiture is a civil court process where the defendant is technically the property itself and not the person it was taken from. Pardons can only be for criminal offenses. The burden of proof in a civil asset forfeiture case is on the person to prove that they acquired the assets legally and that the assets were not involved in a crime. So technically Manafort can be pardoned and no longer be a convict but I don’t believe that would make the assets that were seized magically untainted in the eyes of the law. At the very least he would have to go to court again and prove that it is more likely than not that the assets were legally obtained.

Just heard on the radio it has to do with a woman Kavanaugh went to high school with.

Two possibilities:

1. It’s a Roger Stone special designed to discredit critics of the Kavanaugh nomination.
2. It’s a he said - she said with no possibility of resolution at this time. And the GOP (and many others as well) would excuse crimes committed so long ago by a teenager.

I’m already seeing a lot of memes and posts by Blue Lives Matter types all over Facebook and Twitter defending the shooting, saying that even if Amber Guyger was in the wrong apartment, the responsibility lies with Botham Jean for “failing to follow commands to put his arms up.” They’re going with the “he failed to follow police orders to put his hands up”talking point, and being in his own apartment doesn’t matter because police arrest people all the time in their own homes.
