CLed:
I really thought that it was almost universally agreed that Donald Trump was a sad attention seeking clown until two years ago. God, my dad’s father was terrified by the possibility of Reagan becoming President. What the hell would he say about a man like Trump. Big Dad as we call him was a NLRB lifer, along with his brother the first college graduates in his family and TBH probably the first ever in my direct line. He was kind, compassionate, intelligent, loyal, etc. Everything that Trump ain’t.

I believe it. Their intelligence has certainly evolved, since they are now several times smarter than the average suburbanite hunter here in DFW. Certain liberal activists and fake media wannabes might suggest that, in fact, it’s the hunters who have gotten dumber and the pigs are no smarter than 20th century swine. This position does not play well with the Metroplex NRA contingent.

I’ve been expecting some major GOP figure to be unmasked eventually as a murderer or serial killer — it just seems like the final frontier of depravity the party has set itself on.

Of course, the party will rally around him. The preschoolers buried in Stephen Miller’s basement were certainly No Angels.

Terry Mcauliffe is the best obvious name but boy he sucked as DNC head, he was better as governor but he is a middle looking guy that I have a hard time trusting.

Chill. It does not matter at this point. Obama was mostly unknown in 2006. Someone will run and win the nomination and we will support them and the republicans will say they are the most leftist person in the universe. It’s a marathon that hasn’t even started. The Republicans only want to know who we like so they can start demonizing them. Never play the game on their terms. Never.

I’ve also got to find a good documentary on 9-11 (if anyone has any suggestions…I have Hulu and Amazon) for my eldest to watch so she has a better understanding of what happened that day. She wasn’t born yet and she has a writing assignment for her English class.

imdb.com
These two french filmmakers were doing a somewhat routine documentary about a New York City rookie firefighter, and happened to be there that day. They saw the plane overhead, they rushed to the scene and were in the building until everyone got ordered out….

If a Democrat fucked up the disaster relief for a very red state or a very white state, we’d hear that they were being punished for being Republican or white by the very people who blame Puerto Rico on FNC for what happened. This is fucking sick. It’s fucking sick how Trump refuses to take any responsibility for what happened. It’s fucking sick how FNC is always there to pat him on his fat orange ass and tell him “It’s all right, Donald, you did great, it’s the media, Democrats, etc’s fault that you’re being criticized.” FNC really is a disgrace to the total concept of what a free media is supposed to be. The media isn’t supposed to be the President’s voice and FNC has been the past two years.

But a Democratic President wouldn’t do that. He would make sure that FEMA was competently staffed and funded and deliver a quality response, as his job demanded.

Yeah, about removing statues of traitors “erasing history”:

Texas board votes to eliminate Hillary Clinton, Helen Keller from history curriculum (Goes to the Dallas Morning News)

AUSTIN — History curriculum in Texas remembers the Alamo but could soon forget Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller.

As part of an effort to “streamline” the social studies curriculum in public schools, the State Board of Education voted Friday to adjust what students in every grade are required to learn in the classroom. Among the changes, board members approved the removal of several historical figures, including Clinton and Keller, from the curriculum.

The board also voted to keep in the curriculum a reference to the “heroism” of the defenders of the Alamo, which had been recommended for elimination, as well as Moses’ influence on the writing of the nation’s founding documents, multiple references to “Judeo-Christian” values and a requirement that students explain how the “Arab rejection of the State of Israel has led to ongoing conflict” in the Middle East.

As a reminder, what goes in Texas textbooks tends to wind up in other states.

The State Board of Education last updated the standards in 2010, approving several requirements pushed by the board’s most conservative members, including teaching Texas high schoolers that Moses “informed the American founding documents.”

The board also decided that students should have to “compare and contrast” the First Amendment clause barring establishment of a state religion with the doctrine of the separation of church and state.

Now, the board will consider axing the 2010 standards and amending several others, like moving “slavery” to the head of a list of the causes of the Civil War. Currently, slavery comes in the middle of a the list that also includes states’ rights, sectionalism and protective tariffs.

Keller went on to become a world-famous speaker and author. She is remembered as an advocate for people with disabilities, amid numerous other causes. The Deaf community was widely impacted by her. She traveled to twenty-five different countries giving motivational speeches about Deaf people’s conditions. She was a suffragette, pacifist, radical socialist, birth control supporter, and opponent of Woodrow Wilson. In 1915 she and George A. Kessler founded the Helen Keller International (HKI) organization. This organization is devoted to research in vision, health and nutrition. In 1920, she helped to found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Most funny thing for me as a Southerner is seeing people like Corey Stewart who are about as Southern as borscht embracing the CSA. I’ve always felt pride that my grandfather’s grandfather fought on the right side. Was he a racial liberal even by that era? Probably not but did he choose his adoptive country over the right to own people, yes. And I’m proud of that. If he was a racial liberal, all the better.

Controversy Surrounds New Pulaski County Newspaper’s Name

URANUS, Mo. — A new newspaper is being launched in Pulaski County.

“The Uranus Examiner.”

That’s the name Natalie Sanders, the managing editor, announced Wednesday afternoon.

“We had thought about Constitution, but most of our, the people who love us, and who were part of coming up with the name, liked the ‘examiner’ better,” Sanders said.”

The announcement was made Wednesday at a Chamber of Commerce Luncheon after the Waynesville Daily Guide was shut down by their parent company, GateHouse Media, on Friday.

The the man they consider the “Mayor of Uranus”, Louie Keen, is backing the new weekly newspaper to fill the void left behind by the Waynesville Daily Guide.

I don’t expect people to hate their CSA ancestors but to be objective about their cause. And when I see them try to say they weren’t racist. Just hell no. Was every man who fought the CSA as ugly as Nathan Forrest? No but all fought to preserve slavery and I’m glad they failed. I’m glad that Southern planters went bankrupt after the war.

This is another one of those examples where memes and tweets do not carry the nuance: yes, many of those who fought for the Confederate cause never owned a slave.

But of course, those who owned 20 slaves or more were exempt from the draft, they had to stay home and tend to their property…

Age is not the disqualifier for me. Sanders is about the age of my mother (she is a year older), but if she lives up to other women in my family, she has at least thirty more good years in her.

The more I learn about Senator Sanders, the less I like what I see, which makes me regret my support of him during the state caucus.

New documentary from DW, about the crash:

[Embedded content]

There’s been several retrospectives published recently, ten years on. Here’s one.

The Forgotten History of the Financial Crisis foreignaffairs.com

While not directly related to the 2007-8 crash, this Guardian article describes how a clever banker figured out how rich people could move their money around without having to deal with pesky exchange rates and currency controls, while the Bretton Woods agreement was still in effect. Short version: Bearer bonds

The Real Goldfinger: The London Banker Who Broke the World
theguardian.com

I had the thought reading the Guardian article that Nixon’s decision to de-couple the dollar from hard metals was the point when the USA began to lose its place at the top of the world financial system. Fixing the dollar to a set gold price had all other countries over a barrel, and effectively prevented smaller national economies from growing. Once the gold peg was gone, and everything floated on world markets, those national economies were free to exploit market conditions. China certainly did.

I’m sure economists have worked this all out already, but I’m a slow learner wrt econ.

re: #212 wheat-dogg

Bearer bonds were the McGuffin in Die Hard, if you remember. Because of worldwide money laundering laws, they are a thing of the past, but if you had a bearer bond, it only listed its face value, not its owner or purchaser. So, the holder of one of these things could walk into any major bank around the world and either deposit the proceeds or get cash from the bond, no questions asked.

Life was so simple then.

America, specifically Missouri, 2018:

South county legislators’ views on education span all sides of spectrum

[…]

And on the other side of the spectrum, south county’s other senator Sen. Andrew Koenig, R-Manchester, questions the current practices of public education and says more students need to be enrolled in private schools.

[…]

“Too often it’s more of an atheistic viewpoint, and they refuse to teach the other side,” Koenig said of public-school curriculum.

The senator contends that schools should focus on not just teaching evolution in science class, but also instruct students on more of a creationism-focused viewpoint.

“They don’t even teach the flaws in evolution,” he said of science teachers.

One of those flaws, Koenig believes, can be seen in the four-winged fruit fly, which was created by scientists in a lab to demonstrate aspects of evolution such as how modifying a gene can change the entire structure of a species. The line of inquiry led to a Nobel Prize in 1996.

[…]

As another example from science, Koenig pointed to the bacterial flagellum, which is comprised of over 40 proteins.

It is so complex that it could only have been designed rather than developed over time through evolution, he said.

[…]

He’s getting his talking points from the DiscoTute.

It’s been said the world’s most expensive hobby is having the second-best military. Theirs doesn’t even approach second-best.

Yeah, but the Russian military is perfectly adequate for their needs: which is to basically back up Russian bullying of their neighbors. Their military may be second-rate, but that matters little if all you are contemplating fighting are third-rate forces (like, say Georgia).

This part of the article…wowser:

Wexner called Obama’s visit to Ohio this week a “great moment for the community,” according to the Dispatch.

“I was struck by the genuineness of the man; his candor, humility and empathy for others,” Wexner said.

The newspaper noted that the comments stand in stark contrast to what the GOP supporter has said about President Trump.

The billionaire CEO reportedly said in a speech last year that he was “ashamed” by Trump’s response to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., that erupted in violence and led to the death of a 32-year-old woman.

I’ve got a flip phone (GoPhone). It can get text messages. Not sure what they mean by “test message” though. Just to be on the safe side, I figure I can just keep the phone turned off for the 30 minutes they’ll be sending the message (starting at 2:18 p.m. on September 20)

Why? The Pumpkin Pinochet can’t by law use it as his personal communication medium.

The wireless emergency alerts (WEA) system was authorized by Congress in 2015 under a law that states the “system shall not be used to transmit a message that does not relate to a natural disaster, act of terrorism, or other man-made disaster or threat to public safety.”

It’s just an upgrade to the already existent emergency broadcast system that also requires Presidential authorization to activate (except for testing).

It’s just an upgrade to the already existent emergency broadcast system that also requires Presidential authorization to activate (except for testing).

anything he doesn’t like is a “threat to public safety”.

also, laws don’t apply to him…just ask Rudy…or Kavanaugh.

Experts didn’t appear to be too concerned that Trump, known to use his smartphone to blast opponents, berate subordinates and take shots at the news media on Twitter, could abuse WEA.

“If you separate this from the politics and personality of any individual president then this is a great idea and an amazing use of technology to reach everybody if they’re in harms way,” said Karen North, director of the Annenberg Digital Social Media program at the University of Southern California.

UCLA communications professor Tim Groeling agreed, writing via email, “broadcast-based emergency alert systems … have remained professional and impartial over decades.”

Just got done canvassing. Beautiful chilly day for it but not a lot of people home but I’m impressed by the Wexton campaign’s organization. They’ve done this for granted on a smaller level but they have an organized team and they’re coordinating with Kaine and working to create a liberal veterans support group so if Jen wins, it won’t surprise me if that’s an issue she works on.

No, it wouldn’t be a Trump-supporting congregation. It’s his childhood rabbi, from a Reform synagogue in Santa Monica.

The Trumpiest synagogues are hard-right Orthodox, and mostly in Israel. Even the wingiest rightiest American synagogues are barely half wingers.

He has also donated to Democrats a little, but no surprise he is a big Republican backer. He has gotten more conservative as he became more rich and older.

Wexner was ranked #11 on Harvard Business Review’s Top 100 Best Performing CEOs of 2015, and #34 in 2016. Over the years he built a retailing and marketing conglomerate, which currently includes: Victoria’s Secret, Pink (Victoria’s Secret), Bath & Body Works, Henri Bendel, The White Barn Candle Company, and La Senza.

Started Limited Stores in many a mall back in the 80s and grew from there. He has warehouses and distribution centers all over the east side of the Columbus area. He had owned Lane Bryant and other stores too…like Express.

I think you are missing the meaning of the word “ultimately”. Tibetan Buddhists would go back to Tibet if China would stop their oppression. Many refugees, even “economic refugees”, hope one day that they can have a good life in their original home. When I was in my 20’s there were plenty of people going up to Alaska to work the oil fields so they could “come home” with a wad of cash to have a better place in life.
I think people forget that not all 200+ million people in Mexico and Central America have come crashing the border because they would rather live in the U.S. Most of those that come faced grinding poverty and/or existential threats.

For him to say this in Europe to Europeans makes me think he does not believe a person can rightfully relocate on a permanent basis. If a person wants to go back to where they came from, fine. If they don’t, I believe they should be made to feel comfortable in a new home. Doesn’t matter why they want to. Could be economic, could be to avoid violence, whether from someone they know or a gang or a war or anything. We are fortunate to have such a big country in which we can move around at will. I guess we would have to ask him to elaborate. I don’t think it implies that. If he said “Tibet is for Tibetans” and “Tibetans should go back to Tibet”, would we think he was a Tibetan supremacist? I think most of the refugees were driven out, and had no desire to leave. I think to say that they should go back is recognizing that they have a right of return. In Western Sahara, for example, there are tens of thousands of refugees living in desert camps with nowhere to return to. Teenagers today have lived their entire lives in these camps supported by the UN. They would like to go home, Morocco begs to differ. I think the best long term resolution is for refugees to return safely to their homes as soon as possible. If some want to stay, I support that. The more time that passes, the less chance there is of ever returning even if they want to, as their property and places have been taken and their children raised in a different culture.

Remember, in addition to the Dalai Lama being a refugee from current-day Tibet, the Tibetans are fairly recent refugees up on that plateau from their former territorial range. It’s just remarkably tone-deaf, especially considering the European audience.

I see no benefit in figuring out what the Dalai Lama thinks. I don’t think refugees should be kept in camps, even nice ones like the Turks have on the Syrian border. They should live in the neighborhoods of the host.

Generations of refugees have made this (the US) their home. Navajos and Apaches could be understood for wanting them to go back to where they came from. They make better hosts from the little pieces of their original homes they were forced to live on than some of their interlopers do.

Hopis believe they emerged from the ground, right where they are today. Apaches came later, and settled* where the House Builders weren’t, according to them. Reality is whatever you were born into, until you find otherwise (if that happens in your life).
