Jill Sobule - I Don’t Wanna Wake Up (Official video)

Video by Atypical Beings.

Description:
This song was written after a shitty breakup. I was also still morning the loss of my mom who had passed six months before. I was recommended a therapist who proscribed some antidepressants that had bad side effects. I was nonplussed. Around that time, I kept reading the benefits of psychedelics and micro-dosing. This was not from my stoner or hippie friends, but from serious periodicals and the New York Times. If the Times said I could do it, then that was good enough for me. I had done mushrooms a few times in my youth and always had a good time. By the way, the first time I did mushrooms was in 8th grade to go see Alice Cooper’s “Billion Dollar Baby”. Good choice.

I started writing these stream-of-consciousness type lyrics as I was starting to come down from my trip. Before, it would have been difficult to figure out where I had placed my notebooks and pens.

It was a biblical experience, not meaning anything extraordinary or spiritual happened, but rather I thought about, for some reason, Old (and New) Testament stories and themes: loss, mortality, my lack of faith, and yes the promise of starting over.

Lyrics:

Oh my lord, I think I saw the light
It was in the kitchen blinking oh so bright
And standing there was an angel making angel dust
She said go grab your blanket and you can come with us.
I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up

Oh my lord, I think I’ve been redeemed
To tell the honest truth always wanted to believe
Now, I’m flying, flying through the sky
There’s snakes down there below me, but they can’t jump this high
I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up

I sang with wise Old Solomon
I sang his dirty song
I met with Cain and Abel
And we all got along
I blew that horn with Joshua
The wall came tumbling down
I wrapped my blanket round me dug that crazy sound
I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up

Crossed the river Jorden, back down to Silver Lake.
When I arise will I be reborn or wake up with a bad headache
But for now, I hear the voices
Of the ones that I hold dear
In my slumber there’s nothing left to fear
I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up, I don’t wanna wake up

Big surprise, Ben Shapiro is more a propagandist than journalist.

Who could have guessed?

Well, that and a mercenary.

So now that Mueller has them plead/guilty/cooperating on the lower crimes, the pressure ratchets up. The next ones are bigger fish.

And I have some problems with the Ukrainian government but their sovereignty was undermined big time here and that is disgusting.

I’ve always seen him as a propagandist. That’s why I hated seeing my childhood best friend push his bs.

Talked to the daughter in South Carolina today. She said the storm was a complete bust where she is (Hartsville, 80 miles inland). They had about 5 inches of rain and 30-40 mph winds, which is an average spring day to a west Texas transplant like her.

Which is why they indicted Trump’s former campaign manager. These guys really think that just lying that Mueller has nothing is going to make the whole thing go away. Mueller is fucking brilliant in how he’s handling this. That I don’t even know what Bob Mueller sounds like is a good thing.

What amuses me about all this is the shit Manafort was doing is what they would consider “DEEP STATE” if there were so much as rumors of Obama affiliated people doing this. I am pretty damn pissed at the bipartisan crowd that was helping President Yanukovych. Was really disappointed to see that Dick Lugar, one of the few Republicans Ieft I had some respect for involved in that. Obama’s former counsel was allegedly too.

And presumably Simone is trying to hint the “nothing”they don’t got is anything on Trump personally, ergo the whole investigation (crimes, corruption and guilty pleas notwithstanding) is a big bust?

…of every food and beverage you can think of.

And so the message is also the same.

Years ago, Bruce Ames, the microbiologist who developed the Ames Test for mutagenicity of chemicals in food, gae a seminar at Genentech, which I attended. Someone asked him “What’s the Bruce Ames diet?”

He said, “Eat what you like, and don’t worry about it.” Worrying is probably worse for you than what you eat.

I hope so too. He just agh has such a toxic and obnoxious personality. You know that stereotype of liberals being self-righteous and full of themselves? That’s Ben to me. Not saying that there aren’t liberal people like that but he is the very stereotype of his opposition which I find funny.

She’s a cousin of theirs but Mara Wilson who played Matilda and was the youngest daughter in Mrs. Doubtfire I’ve read is their cousin and pretty liberal minded. She sort of disappeared after her retirement from acting but 90’s nostalgia and her participation in a Nostagia Critic video to me showed me she’s got a good sense of humor. Plus she’s kind of cute and we have the same exact birthday. Honestly, I’ll give Shapiro’s Sis the BoD until otherwise.

The biggest example of campus “leftism” we had at the GMU campus lol was some of us working to try to get better wages and working conditions for the Sodexo workers on campus. I was working on the school paper part time at the time as a sportswriter and really disappointed how they portrayed the activists both the students and the SEIU who was trying to help unionize. I was on my way out at the sports section anyhow because my first editor had graduated- we had a great working relationship even if he was a GMU Economics Department guy(GMU’s econ department is notoriously libertarian but we both loved baseball), his successor was also a baseball fan who I worked okay with but not as well with, and the final editor I had I just didn’t mesh with. I focused my final year of extracurricular activity with the campus Democrats. I know there’s some far left groups on campuses but a lot of what I hear deemed leftism is really just naivete. And self described socialists on campus bother me far less than a Youth for Western Civilization chapter whose flyer I noticed interestingly enough right around the time I started posting at LGF.

I may be wrong, but I always thought people who grew up with a normal attitude about firearms - that is, whether for hunting or target shooting or defense or work (LEO or military etc) it is a tool to be used with great respect and care because it is so dangerous - don’t see them as toys to be posed with or used for public cosplay. They use them for their proper purpose, not as a way to try to appear tough or menacing.

Shorter version - I don’t imagine there are too many photos around of your grandpa posing with a gun and grinning like a maniacal fucking moron.

That’s exactly what I was thinking and you are correct, the only photos I have of my grandfather with a gun are from his days in the Army during the Korean War. Grandpa was a vet, gun owner, and even a lifelong NRA member but he was never one to flaunt guns, his service, or that he knew how to use them. He was actually surprisingly fairly pacifist minded for someone who if you met him would seem like the archetypal Reagan veteran type- white ethnic, blue collar, and Catholic but man he hated the right and I’m sure he would be annoyed by photos like the ones Elec posted and the others we see.

I still maintain that a lot of Nixon’s later neuroses go back to 1960 (and to a certain extent losing the governors race in 1962). Yeah, a lot of his career/life was driven by a certain type of resentment (growing up poor and often being excluded from social clubs) but I think things go very differently in the second half of the twentieth century if Nixon wins in ‘60.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.
April 16, 1953. Unthinkable to think of any Republican to say something like this today.

From that same speech:

“The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.”

We’re leaving tomorrow at noon. Our evac order is lifted at 9 am. Hope we can make it home easy enough, but think that waiting is only going to allow the flooding to get worse……………….

True, true. God I don’t want to think of the next right wing astroturf bullshit endeavor. I’m thinking we’re going to take back one of the two Houses this fall and maybe the Senate and Presidency in 2020 so we’re going to be due for a bad year in 2022 but what we have to do is limit the damage that will come.

We’ll take back D.C…just in time to be told we’re the source of all that is ailing America and we need to be run out again in 2022 to make way for a new crop of Republicans who assure America they will “fix” all the shit that we’ve “broken.”

I’ve been analyzing my philosophy more and more and what my basic political philosophy comes down to is I want the government to invest in our people. We are the government and the government is us. The right for too long has portrayed government officials as these distant invisible elites but that’s just not true. Government employees are everyone from your child’s teacher to the POTUS and so many in between.

The good news though TP is I don’t think we in VA are going to continue our tradition of electing an opposite party of the party that won the WH. I think the governorship will be all Justin Fairfax or Mark Herring’s in 2019. The GOP roster here gets weaker and weaker as they continue to nominate people like Stewart and Gillespie. I can’t think of a single Republican that would have sufficient appeal here in NoVa to win. The party’s really going to have to change its stripes here or this baby’s going blue for a long time.

That’s all I’ve heard since the newest polls dropped at the start of the month showing Donny’s “rise” stalled out and is plummeting back to Earth: “Well what do you expect when all the press reports on is Russia and Stormy Daniels! If they told people the good news, Trump would be popular and the liberal press can’t have that!”

Yet I do hear about the “good news” in the “liberal press” on a regular basis. Whether it be the stock market hitting news highs, UE down to “record lows,” wages rising, etc. The reality they don’t understand is when the economy is humming along nicely, people stop worrying about jobs and they start paying attention to things like social policy. Just because they’re making bank does not mean they’re suddenly okay with running internment camps or installing the darker parts of The Handmaid’s Tale into law.

“…In his 2005 book, God and Man at Georgetown Prep, which is now out of print, Judge apparently paints the school as overrun with gay priests who promote a form of liberalism that wrecks Catholic education. He also describes an institution where alcoholism was rampant, a theme he detailed in his 1997 addiction memoir, Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk.

That book chronicles Judge’s time as a teenage alcoholic. Like many works of the genre, it devotes a lot of ink to the kinds of debauchery that leads to AA and recovery. While there’s nothing in the book that resembles the incident reportedly described in the private letter given to the FBI, Judge says his own black-out drinking while he and Kavanaugh were Georgetown Prep students “reached the point where once I had the first beer, I found it impossible to stop until I was completely annihilated.”

If Bernie runs in 2020 (and I think he’d be stupid to do so), he’s going to get buried in Iowa and New Hampshire. Even if it ends up being a smaller field than many are expecting (I think it’s going to be closer to a field size like 2004, with 4-5 legitimate contenders and maybe a couple of issue oriented also rans), he’s not going to be able to gain the traction he did in 2016 because of those dynamics. It’s a lot easier to be an alternative/protest candidate when you can sell a coronation story about the frontrunner in a very small field.

That line did change though with the rise of Trump but yes. I just think Bernie’s not going to have that new car smell and the college kids that loved him two years ago will be four years older. Speaking for myself as a former 17 year old Kucinich supporter *shudder) in 2004, I was a lot more pragmatic minded four years later and not wanting to hear someone with a lot of talk but with little to show for it. Sanders promises a lot but what I think his opponents are going to press him on is “What have you actually accomplished.” If he runs and I think he will, he will be the candidate that has been in Washington the longest that is if Biden or Kerry don’t run.

Yeah not really a good argument in your defense. As I said, I’m glad the guy’s sober for his own sake and I know how alcoholism can be but that’s a shitty character witness because by his own admission, he was blacking out drunk in those days. His homophobia isn’t relevant to this but he sounds like a real asshole who probably wouldn’t surprise me got abused and has some fucked up homophobia because of it.

Sanders, Biden, and Kerry are, in my opinion, too old now, let alone in 2 more years.

Sanders 2016 actually has a lot of similarities to McCain 2000. When the establishment lines up behind a particular candidate and attempts to clear the field, there’s always going to be a decent number of primary voters who want someone else.

That dynamic changes though, when you’ve got a competitive field. It’s a lot harder to break through the noise. And Sanders, if he does run, is going to be speaking to a party that is very different than it was in 2016, at least based on the activism we’ve seen the last two years.

That’s actually a good analogy that I never thought of. I agree with you on those three. I like Biden and Kerry more than I do Bernie but I think their time has come. Biden has been rejected twice now running for President and Kerry lost an election. The weather dried up and it got windy again, fire jumped all containment lines and doubled in size in just two days. This is in the county to the north of my twenty, nearest town is Steamboat Springs, about 40 miles distant.

I do wonder though how the Mattis potential firing will go over with the USMC and vets who support Trump. That might actually be a final straw for them but then again, I would think that Trump’s first belittling/ignorance about McCain’s POW experience and then being a total douche when McCain died would have for any military member whether they liked McCain or not but we all know there’s douches in the military just like there is in civilian life.

There’s 16 Democratic governors. Jerry Brown is too old, and Andrew Cuomo’s an asshole, but that still leaves 14 to look at.

D senators on the foreign affairs committee include Cory Booker, Chris Murphy, Tim Kaine, Jeff Merkley. D senators on the intelligence committee include Mark Warner, Ron Wyden, Kamala Harris.

Among mayors… I hate Gavin Newsome, Villaraigosa’s got a bunch of scandals, DeBlasio’s only semi-competent, Rahm Emmanuel is an asshole. Eric Garcetti’s not bad.

Andrew you mean but yes. As for those Senators my thoughts.
Booker: I like a lot. Maybe a little too friendly sometimes with Wall Street. However, I love him on Criminal Justice and that he has a mix of executive and legislative experience.
Murphy: I really like him too but not sure if he’s Presidential material. Perhaps VP even though he doesn’t help us gain anything.
Kaine: I also like but I don’t know if he’s liberal enough for the primary electorate and I love the job he does as our Senator.
Warner: Good governor and senator but doesn’t take too many risks and TBH isn’t charismatic at all and would be even less ideologically liberal than Kaine.
Merkley: Haven’t heard his name as a hopeful but I like him. He’s tenancious and he’s progressive without being obnoxious about it.
Wyden: I don’t know if he has aspirations but I’ve always admired him from afar.
Harris: I really like a lot like Booker.

Kind of neat that both VA and Oregon have a senator each on both committees. Warner would have been perfect for the 1990’s Democrats. Business orientated and centrist but he’s just not fit for the future of the party nationally. No problem with him remaining our Senior Senator but he’s just not a risk taker on issues. Yeah the title says it alone. I honestly hate the phrase “white guilt.” I don’t really feel guilt so much as for being white but awareness that my ancestors and thus me have had certain advantages that PoC have never had in this country. Judge judging by his name comes from an Irish-Catholic background as does Kavanaugh and my father on his mother’s side. It’s true. Was NOT easy for them but our ancestors lost our accents and even when we had accents we had it a lot easier than black people especially. Acknowledging that isn’t guilt. It’s awareness that a white person losing his temper with a foreman or superior may get fired. A black person who so much as looked at a white person wrong had to worry about being murdered. It’s awareness that definitely has impacted PoC to this very day.

I always loved Matthews’ line about the parties: Democrats want to fall in love, Republicans fall in line.

Democrats want to do things for you
Republicans want to do things to you after theyve got your vote

I didn’t really get the point of trying new food until Mrs. Fish sold me on sushi. It’s the food of the gods, and I can’t deny it, I’m addicted to good sushi. It’s a shame that so many in conservative America don’t really have the chance to experience actual, real food from other cultures because nobody wants to set up shop in their shithole cities.

Well, my mom was from Texas, so I grew up on Tex-Mex. That makes me a little more tolerant of inauthentic “Mexican” food, I guess—but Taco Bell still doesn’t qualify.

Fun fact: On my first date with Mrs. Fish, we went to an authentic Mexican restaurant run by a local Mexican family. I got food poisoning and spent the rest of the night trying not to vomit. She thought I was just nervous. I didn’t have the heart to tell her until weeks later.

Your guess is as good as mine. I’d take one of the kids as his heir before someone conventional like an establishment darling like Rubio or Kasich. Trump became their point of no return. The Dem Primary in 2020 is going to be very interesting too.

Yeah, the whole meat meat manly man shit is stupid. I love my hearty food. Part of why Slovakia was fun for me was trying that food in its natural setting but I like diversity too. Conservative America is afraid to try new things and I really think it holds them back in so many ways.

It all depends on how this ends. If Trump is removed before 2020, they’ll rally around Pence (assuming he doesn’t go the way of Agnew). If Trump loses in 2020, 2024 becomes a civil war between the Trump deadenders (represented by Pence or Pompeo) and those wanting to modernize the party. And for those who want to modernize the party, they’ll probably fall back to a trusted GOP move, “In case of no consensus, break glass, nominate a Bush.” George P will be 48 in 2024.

It’s going to be interesting to watch. The thing that troubles me about the party modernizing/moderating is that the young ones really aren’t much better. Nah. Remember how he acted like the economy was worse than it was in the Depression. This is quite natural. It doesn’t shock me. The only thing that does sort of shock me is that he acts this pathetic about it for the whole world to see. REally, using fucking Breitbart and his son to rebuke Obama. I was never that impressed with Rubio TBH with you. From his challenge to Crist in 2010, he just seemed too weasely. But yeah I ahve no idea who it will be in 2024. If you had told me it would have been Donald Trump four years ago, I would have laughed at you. I knew they were going nuts since Santorum was runner up to Romney but I never thought they’d go full nutso. George P is an interesting wild card since he’s going to be running in a totally different Texas that elected his uncle and grandfather. And I think you’re right unfortunately that tehy won’t be in the wilderness enough time to actually learn any lessons. The best we can do is impact enough positive and popular change that will be hard for them to reverse should they get the drivers’ seat again and make it impossible for them to be viable on the very issues that made Trump viable.

I really do sort of worry about something like that. But I think we just need to take back both Houses and the Presidency and reverse the stuff that Trump did that will lead to the downturn. Perhaps we avoid a backlash. I think it depends when the tanking happens. If it’s before the presidential election, I think Trump gets the blame, he has wanted all the credit for the shape of the economy. He’ll try to and he will get away with deflecting the blame but I doubt it will work.
