California Professor Goes Public, Speaks Out About Sexual Assault Allegation Against Brett Kavanaugh: “I Thought He Might Kill Me”

Politics • Views: 42,262

Will this derail Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination?

Or will we witness — yet again — an amoral, power-hungry Republican Party ramming through his confirmation anyway?

Speaking publicly for the first time, Ford said that one summer in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh and a friend — both “stumbling drunk,” Ford alleges — corralled her into a bedroom during a gathering of teenagers at a house in Montgomery County.

While his friend watched, she said, Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed on her back and groped her over her clothes, grinding his body against hers and clumsily attempting to pull off her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she wore over it. When she tried to scream, she said, he put his hand over her mouth.

“I thought he might inadvertently kill me,” said Ford, now a 51-year-old research psychologist in northern California. “He was trying to attack me and remove my clothing.”

Ford said she was able to escape when Kavanaugh’s friend and classmate at Georgetown Preparatory School, Mark Judge, jumped on top of them, sending all three tumbling. She said she ran from the room, briefly locked herself in a bathroom and then fled the house.

This was an incredibly brave step for Professor Ford to take, because she undoubtedly knew what kind of harassment and threats will now be coming her way from the army of deranged Trump cultists.

Oh… and by the way, Kavanaugh’s friend Mark Judge has written at least one piece attacking a rape victim for Holocaust denier Chuck C. Johnson’s blog, too.

Maybe pick a better character witness next time Brett. I think there’s definitely something to this allegation. She’s made her name known, the couples therapy bit in 2012, and telling her husband what had happened to her.

Credible allegations. Again.

That idiotic letter signed to by dozens of women doesn’t matter nearly as much as this woman’s claims that are credible.

The GOP wont care; they’re determined to pack the court with misogynists intent on rolling back civil and voting rights, and overturn Roe. That’s the goal. That’s the end game, and they will do anything they can to make that happen, even if it means packing the Court with another sex predator.

Even as we knew that Ben Shapiro was pushing agitprop and misinformation all while lying to the public, it turns out that his role in Trumpworld and Manafort’s actions was never fully identified…. until now:

The Israeli official involved in all this is far right Defense Minister Avigor Lieberman. The Trumpworld criminal syndicate is aligned with the far right elsewhere in the world, from Russia and Ukraine to Israel.

Meanwhile the Professor was definitely traumatized by the event. Fuck this. This really shows that the so called Never Trump right are just as ugly people as the Trump right are. Yeah it’s not like if a Democratic judicial nominee was revealed to have this happen that the GOP and their allies in the media would not pounce on it. Complaining that this is being politicized is stupid. The right chose to present Kavanaugh as something he isn’t. Most of us didn’t engage in sex assaults.

Sex assaults are among the most vile crimes and we continue to victimize the victims when they do come forward.

Kavanaugh didn’t do just do stupid stuff.

He’s alleged to have engaged in sex assault. That’s a felony. And at age 17, that means getting treated as an adult in most jurisdictions.

If you’re black, you’d be damned sure that they’d treat you as an adult with the same allegations. So yeah, this matters.

Why didn’t she come forward sooner they ask? Because now his decisions will have direct implications/impacts in her (and all of our) lives.

A little story. Years ago when our company was expanding quickly there was this software architect that had come on. I heard him outside my cubicle talking about hiring people. I heard him say that he didn’t think the company should hire any developers over 30 years old. I blew it off at the time (I was early 50’s at that time) since he was in another group separate from mine. Then I started hearing some gossip that he was going to switched to our group and put in charge. It was then I decided to go to HR and let them know in no uncertain terms that there was no fucking way I would work for him, and let them know the reason.

So I am still there and he has been gone a little while (not because of this incident). His thoughts were shitty but at the time wouldn’t affect me (and maybe I should have said something at the time, that is for another discussion). But once it was going to have a direct affect on me I had to speak out.

Lots of us made youthful mistakes. Some of those cap your place in life. So some of us find other than high political / judicial success in life. Those law and order conservatives don’t like that applied to well off white guys. RW “Law and order” is really for poor people.

Mitch Daniels was GWB’s director of the Office of Management & Budget. He’s the one who said the Iraq War would cost $50-60B. Total. Later, he was a two-term governor of Indiana (2005-2013). He did austerity, right-to-work, and privatized the highways. Fucking HIGHWAYS!!

Earlier in his life… while a student at Princeton, he was arrested for being a major drug dealer out of his dorm room. The search found shoeboxes full of pot, plus lots of pills and cocaine and LSD. He had a very good lawyer; his defense was “oh, dude, that’s my ex-roommate’s stuff, I didn’t know anything about it.” His sentence was a $350 fine. He believes justice was served.

A lot of us did stupid stuff at 17. Some of us did stupid stuff at 25.

This matters a lot.

Even during my brief moderate phase in 06-early 08, I observed that there was a huge self-righteousness and self-assuredness that their ideology was pure as snow by conservatives. A conservative screws up? Oh that’s because he was actually a liberal all along. Or the blaming of Tip O’Neill for the economic problems that resulted from Reaganism. But most of all, it’s smugness that only they understand the Constitution and that it’s wrong to liken conservatives to Nazis but it’s perfectly okay to do the same to liberals for both Nazis and the Soviets.

I will say, the bizarre framing of Kavanaugh as everyone’s favorite soccer dad now seems intentionally prophylactic.

And having a team of young private school girls at his hearing now seems extra creepy.

I definitely did feel they went overboard to portray him as this boy scout type. We’ve seen alot of layers of KAvanaugh’s onion come off.

re: #170 ObserverArt

I think he is a race against James O’Keefe.

What is odd, all of Nunes’ committee has tried so far has blown up in their faces. Wouldn’t these great recorded interviews have led to what they have already tried and failed on? They would have used this already.

This smells like raw meat left out in the Californian heat for too long.

Raw fish, more like: this crap smells fishy from the get-go. My guess is that Nunes is going to selectively release almost-certainly cherry-picked/edited/decontextualized “interviews” with biased/partisan sources, then claim the whole mess “exonerates” Trump from any wrongdoing whatsoever. And then count on RW media to run with his “revelations” and whip up the rubes into a self-righteous frenzy before any more-thorough analysis proves his “exculpatory facts” as the reeking bogus bullshit they most likely are.

The Israeli official involved in all this is far right Defense Minister Avigor Lieberman. The Trumpworld criminal syndicate is aligned with the far right elsewhere in the world, from Russia and Ukraine to Israel.

It’s pretty disturbing that an allied foreign government was helping Ben Shapiro with talking points against the government of another ally. I’ll say it again. I really feel that Bibi’s government has done immense harm to US-Israeli relations and I blame Bibi for it because he had it out for Obama from the start. Whether it was racial, partisan, just plain dislike, the way he treated Obama was disgusting and I hope he goes down in history as an asshole.

Two weeks ago I was mowing my lawn, and after I was done I noticed that I had a shitload of bites on my left ankle. Looked like chiggers, so I resigned myself to a couple of weeks of varying degrees of itchiness before they healed.

Most of them did, except for one - which turned an angry red today. A trip to urgent care determined that it had developed into cellulitis (I’ll spare you a photo). Just got back from the drug store with some kind of super duper ointment that will supposedly clear it all up.

Non-stop action and adventure up in this joint…

The grifter class, narrow portfolio types like oil and oil industry service, chain retail and food service, developers, health care profiteers, etc. are delirious with joy at the tax cuts, the end of mandated health care, and the green light for environmental pillaging. However, the real movers and shakers, the billionaires and the super-brains who enable them, are not so sure at all. They are perfectly well aware that massive deficits and runaway inflation are in the offing, combined with a collapse in capital investment. The result will be disaster, as surely as night follows day. The grifters are basically fast money types, they want to get while the getting is good, with no thought to the likely future, when even a massively fat portfolio may not be protection enough from the inevitable upheaval.

Found some more information:

There are four people running:

In the governor’s race, 38.8 percent said that if the election were held on the day of the poll, they would vote for or wear leaning toward Mills, while 39 percent said they would vote for or were leaning toward Moody. Four percent said they favored independent candidate Terry Hayes; 2.6 percent said they favored independent candidate Alan Caron, and the remaining 15.6 percent said they remain undecided.

While 41 percent said they held the president in a favorable light, only 37 percent said they had a favorable view of LePage. Of the candidates in the governor’s race, Moody had the highest favorability rating at 46 percent and Mills was viewed favorably by 44 percent.

Despite LePage’s lower favorability rating, the poll indicates that a majority of voters, 51 percent, see the state heading in the right direction. But only 31 percent said their standard of living was better now than it was four years ago.

The survey also found that 47 percent of voters approve of Maine’s first-in-the-nation ranked choice voting system while 42.6 percent disapprove of the system.

The .1%er group has enough long-term thinking that while they of course like living in mansions and throwing Gatsby-esque parties and wearing expensive things and taking luxury vacations… they don’t want to have to live in fortresses with armies, they don’t want to have to worry about kidnap every time they go skiing or surfing or into the city, they don’t want to have to worry about torches and pitchforks.

Maybe pick a better character witness next time Brett. I think there’s definitely something to this allegation. She’s made her name known, the couples therapy bit in 2012, and telling her husband what had happened to her.

More than “something to this allegation”. I believe every word she has said. Kavanaugh has lied.

Amazing how many men are accused of all kinds of varying forms of harassment. It’s like a slow damn break and it’s just getting rolling as women are feeling more empowered to speak up. I doubt it: if Kavanaugh’s nomination gets voted down by the full Senate (AFAIK, the only way it can be derailed: it’s been, IIRC, reported out positively - 11-10 vote on party lines, of course- by the Judiciary Committee), the chances that any replacement candidate King Orangeanus might be able to conjure up from (or be supplied by) the Federalist Society wishlist of hacks in any time to be of use before the new session of Congress in January are pretty low. Near-zero, IMO. Mitch McConnell is a pretty effective Leader in the Senate, but if he can’t hold his (slim) Majority together to push through a Super-Approved Stellar Jurist nominee like Brett Kavanaugh before the elections, it’s hard to see how he would (or could) do squat to “ram through” another one after: especially if facing Minority status come January 3 (?)….

I even had this discussion with Mrs. Fish, who is an avid supporter of the #MeToo movement (and for good reason!), but I pointed out that the potential for abuse exists when ideologues can engineer the downfall of a rival by provoking an artificial outrage using the movement as a cover.

If Kavanaugh’s name is withdrawn this week, Trump can name a new nominee next week, he can do meet and greets in early October, they can bring him before the Committee Mid-November and have a vote before Christmas, ESPECIALLY if they face minority status come January because if that’s the case their opportunity to stack the Court will be gone.

If the Dems do take the Senate in November, they can and should stop anything from happening during that lame-duck session. Deny Mitch a quorum on any Senate action, if need be. If the will of the people is clear, the Senate Dems aren’t going to lose any support by standing their ground on this.

We’ll see if Collins, Murkowski and Flake have the stomach to put a rapist on the Court. I had no hope before today; now I have some.

I assume Sasse will trot obediently behind Flake in whatever noble and highly principled decision Flake makes.

And for some reason, I’m still holding it in the back of my head that Tim Scott in South Carolina (of all people) actually stopped a lower Trump nominee a few months back on an actual matter of principle. Would he do it again?

Somehow, I suspect that if Kavanaugh is going to be stopped this late in the game, Collins and Murkowski won’t be the ones leading the charge. Collins, especially, will equivocate in the wind and fall in behind Flake and Sasse as the 52nd and 53rd no votes.

Maybe even 53rd and 54th… we have no idea, after all, whether Jon Kyl has any spine as an appointed McCain replacement without any skin in the re-election game.

It’s nice, if nothing else, to see a fairly broad consensus that at this point in the game, the red-state Democrats up for reelection have nothing to gain by voting yes on Kavanaugh. Collins and Murkowski and Flake and Sasse can’t fall back on the idea that Donnelly or Heitkamp will be the 50th or 51st yes vote and give them cover to be #52 or 53 on that side.

More importantly, for those “red-state Democrats up for reelection”, do they have anything to lose by voting “no”?

Also: Jon Kyl was/is one of Kavanaugh’s main backers for the SCOTUS nomination all along, so he’s a definite “yes” vote in any circumstances.
And Tim Scott (SC)? Whatever other qualms he might have about nominees, he’s got to know that as a black man, he wouldn’t be able to get anywhere in South Carolina politics without being a reliable Republican Machine hack - and the Republican Machine wants Brett Kavanaugh on the SC so there we are….

Many people don’t give a mind to their ancestors, but if they do it is unlikely they know about anyone past their grandparents.

Understanding the past takes some work, and this I propose is why so many Americans can be so easily mislead by well spoken polemicists.

That some of the “founding fathers”, especially those who expounded upon ideology and were instrumental in the Constitution, were definitely not Christian, and some who were labeled as “Christian” were so in a way that today’s “conservatives” would say were not true Christians, is not something one will hear from many pulpits.

I’m glad you brought that up because I was talking the other day on my FB account with a friend who like me shares Union veterans in her line. I was talking about how with all the talk on CSA memorials, those of us with Union veterans don’t have our family’s story talked about as much or romanticized. Sorry - I should have read the sarc - and I wasn’t meaning to reply to you - rather to the pundits in the media who voice this type of nonsense - given what happened to Merrick Garland

As much as I don’t want Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, I might be able to scrape up a little respect for him if he admitted and sincerely apologized for his long ago actions. I might even agree that what one does as a teenager does not necessarily disqualify one for high office.
As it is, he obviously remembers and knows it’s a problem since they had all those character witnesses lined up, but he doesn’t give a damn about what he did.

re: #397 Blind Frog Belly White

I’m of the opinion that Tom Nichols is overly impressed with his opinion, especially given how little thought he appears to have put into it before hitting ‘post’.

And he’s a Conservative, whatever else he is, with all the dismissal of nonwhite nonold nonChristian nonmen’s experiences that comes with it.

He means well, but of course, that’s not saying a hell of a lot.

I don’t think he realises (or just banishes the thought) that there is a high probability that this is not a one off event - and he seems to forget that Kavanaugh and friend have denied that it even happened. The coverup can be the downfall.

Oh and definitely African-American Civil War vets who are totally forgotten with the exception of the movie Glory. Those were some brave brave men who risked getting thrown into slavery if they were captured REGARDLESS of their pre-war status and you know who maintained that practice, Robert E. Lee, that’s why I don’t buy into the mythos of Lee the reluctant slave owner and secessionist.

That’s especially not a denial from someone who, if I understand correctly, had a serious alcohol problem in high school. I imagine there’s a lot he doesn’t remember.

And he was a blackout drunk in those days. Probably doesn’t have the best memory and wouldn’t be my go to for an alibi.

Has anybody noted yet on a wide-open channel that Mark Judge is apparently a creepy producer of softcore teen voyeur porn, and Yet Another Rape Philosopher to boot? He apparently deleted his youtube channel and hid some other accounts this afternoon after the big news broke. I saw some things retweeted from the Lincoln’s Bible twitter account that were… Well, pretty typical, actually, these days. Ugh.

Edit: Let me see if I can link the tweets

Double edit: may be NSFW

re: #416 Hecuba’s daughter

I’m giving him a pass on this — people have these slips of the tongue all the time, especially in live interviews. My guess is that he is probably exhausted dealing with weather crisis. Let’s focus on the real flaws in this administration’s handling of crises, and not a minor misstatement.

He also supported trump as to the deaths in Puerto Rico - and don’t forget about the outrage with the 57 states. Like all things, the rules are different for republicans.

He is supporting trump - to retain his job.

re: #433 CleverToad

Rants about Prof. Ford interspersed with shrieks of Witch Hunt, because all Kavanaugh means to Trump is a shield against Mueller. Fox and Friends will happily focus on Ford because it means they can avoid talking about the Friday Flip. I mean, that guilty plea is sooooo last week, there’s all this new shiny stuff to distract the base…

Will be interesting to see when — or if — he mentions Manafort by name again, because that little bombshell is probably still echoing around the walls of the Oval Office.

trump is probably quite pleased at the Kavanaugh story - gets Manafort out of the news and also gets his stupid lies about the PR deaths away from the front pages.

I’ve got back to the 1600s on some branches without the need for dna. I’m slightly paranoid about what other uses the dna tests may be used for.

I have managed to find all the gg grandparents and further back on some lines. Have found living relatives in the USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, England & Scotland. My searches fail when I get to Ireland. dna could be the answer to that branch.

re: #411 steve_davis

there is literally an article somewhere on this. White people wading through water with shit they just took out of closed store: “Heroic white people valiantly organize self-help committees in face of natural disaster.” Black people wading through water with shit thy just took out of a closed store: “N****rs go on rampage, stealing food and water from hard-working white salt-of-the-earthers.”

snopes.com

Claim: News photograph captions describe a black man “looting” and a white couple “finding” supplies in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Finding: True

re: #415 can’t think of a decent username

Trying to decide whether to try Netflix again.

I dropped it last time ‘cause at some point, I realized over a month had passed with me watching absolutely nothing on the service. (And I never even finished watching the first season of “Stranger Things.”) But there are quite a few things out I’d like to see that they supposedly have on their service, so trying to figure out if I’d actually watch them or just transition straight back into my non-movie-watching habits… :/

I don’t know what you like, but there is a new season of BoJack Horseman and its brilliant.

Wow, Tom Nichols really stepped in it today with his caveman bullshit. He got seriously ratio’ed.

He blocked me a year ago. I can’t say I’m shocked, tho.
