The Real Purveyors of Fake News: Gateway Pundit and Other Right Wing Propagandists Smear Wrong Person to Defend Brett Kavanaugh

Wingnuts • Views: 52,221
Jim Hoft (r), owner of the far right fake news blog Gateway Pundit

Garbage blog Gateway Pundit currently has six posts smearing and attacking the woman who’s accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of attempted rape, including this one — citing student reviews of the wrong person: Kavanaugh Accuser Is Unhinged Liberal Professor who Former Students Describe as Dark, Mad, Scary and Troubled.

As Matt Gertz points out, the right wing idiots circulating this smear — and Gateway Pundit dirtbag Jim Hoft was joined by Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham because they attack in packs — are using reviews for a different Christine Ford.

Christine Blasey Ford is a research psychologist who teaches clinical psychology at Palo Alto University and in a consortium with Stanford University, according to The Washington Post. Kavanaugh’s defenders are citing student reviews for Christine A. Ford, who taught in the social work department at California State University-Fullerton. The Grabienews story has since been retracted.

As I write this, Hoft has not retracted or corrected this false story. “Fake news,” if you will.

This is no mistake; these despicable people do this every single time when they need to attack one of their perceived enemies. This is pure, deliberate malice. They know that even if they’re forced to correct a false story, the right wing base has already taken it and run with it.

Jim Hoft is already facing two lawsuits for exactly this kind of defamation, but that clearly isn’t stopping him.

UPDATE at 9/17/18 12:44:27 pm by Charles Johnson

Hoft has now removed all mentions of student reviews, changed the post’s title to “Kavanaugh Accuser Is Unhinged Liberal Professor in California (Updated),” and added this “update” at the very bottom of the post, many hours after it was published.

UPDATE — An earlier post referenced Ford as an unpopular professor but we have since learned this was a different educator with the same name.

Notice that Hoft’s headline still describes Prof. Ford as an “unhinged liberal” with no evidence whatsoever.

I think that’s the worst thing Hoft does Charles. It’s not just that he smears people. He smears people totally unrelated to the case at hand. That’s partially due to the fact that he’s stupid and a shitty “journalist” but it’s also because he’s a shitty person and he doesn’t care who gets hurt as long as his “team” prevails.

Well maybe Trump did find out about and just didn’t care but more likely they just heard that Kavanaugh loves protecting executive power and sold him on that.

Fan Bingbing, one of China’s highest-paid and most bankable stars, has appeared in both Chinese and Western films, including the multimillion-dollar X-Men franchise.

Across the country, her face once adorned thousands of advertisements, her star power used to sell a galaxy of luxury brands, from Cartier to Louis Vuitton. She was a regular sight at major award shows and fashion ceremonies. In 2015, Time Magazine named her China’s “most famous actress.”

But the film star hasn’t been seen in public since early June, when, according to a post on her verified social-media account, she went to visit a children’s hospital in Tibet.

In an article by state media Securities Daily on September 6, which was later deleted, the publication said Fan had been brought “under control and about to receive legal judgment.”

Right or wrong, I think “Latinx” is a term that came into use to cover males and females without the “Latino/Latina” distinction. However, if one is talking about either males or females, the proper term should be used.

Edit: Or, as KG said, just use “Hispanic” or “Latin” if you want a catch-all.

Pretty much. When my Latinx push me to use it, I follow their lead.

(Note that I’m in a field with a lot of gender fluid and non-binary people, so it’s not a slam dunk to use a gendered term).

Bob Prince, longtime Pirates broadcaster asked him something to the effect of what does your mother call you or what do you want me to call you. He said Roberto and that was that and Clemente always appreciated Prince and Prince stood up for him when he got shit from assholes.

>Coke eyes cannabis-infused drink market

I saw a PSA at a movie theater yesterday with a mother blaming her child’s death from opiates on cannabis. The alcohol manufacturers are not going to quietly accept legalization.

Btw, there’s no reason an actual theatrical release should have Jake Busey and Olivia Munn in it. I feel like I saw the most violent Syfy Original ever.
Ms. Munn’s acting has improved quite a bit, but is still flat.

not liberty and justice for all

power. for us and only us
irreversible power

Ok, Pet peeve sidebar… I oh so hate “Latinx”. If you’re not going to use the spanish word Latino, then just say Latin. Or better yet just say Hispanic so you don’t have to butcher another language (I’m aware they’re not the same thing, but in this context they are close enough)

Particularly if it’s immediately followed by the word “boys”. There’s no possible -o/-a ambiguity there.

Heh, you mentioning Roberto Clemente just made me think of George Carlin’s riff on double entendres, as part of the “seven words you can never say on television” bit, near the end of his Class Clown album:

Like, it’s OK for Curt Gowdy to say “Roberto Clemente has two balls on him!”, but he can’t say, “I think he hurt his balls on that play, Tony, don’t you? He’s holding them, he must’ve hurt them, by God!”

re: #87 TedStriker

Right or wrong, I think “Latinx” is a term that came into use to cover males and females without the “Latino/Latina” distinction. However, if one is talking about either males or females, the proper term should be used.

Edit: Or, as KG said, just use “Hispanic” if you want a catch-all.

Actually…

Spanish rules are quite simple in this regard. The -o suffix also functions as a neutral gender.

Of course, there are discussions regarding the properness of the gender in these times, but Spanish doesn’t have a neutral gender. So far, the RAE has not determined any major changes.

Currently used alternatives to Latinx are Latin@ (pronounced Latinao) and Latine. Latin@ is graphically weird and still binary, which was half the point of going with Latinx. Latine has the advantage of not implying binarity while also sounding natural in Spanish, unlike Latinx.

I don’t really have a dog in this fight except to note that languages naturally evolve and much of the opposition comes from the same people who were against marriage equality because of the facile (and also flat wrong) objection against changing the definition of the word marriage, which always had the alternative definition of joining any two separate things.

Ukraine is crazy. Just keeping or omitting the article will get you in trouble. Ukraine’s been fascinating me recently. Lots of Rusyns there and the Ukrainian government unlike Slovakia doesn’t officially recognize them but I still defend their sovereignty and Spears identity from Russia.

I defend their sovereignty, but I will not be dictated to about what place names do or don’t require a definite article in my language by speakers of a language that doesn’t even have them.

Most Romance languages overuse the definite article to the point where it’s largely lost its force—do I get in their grille about it? No.

re: #160 KGxvi

What has the trend been with respect to addressing non-binary folks in the language?

Either chose one of the two pronouns, the x or @ substitutes (which the RAE doesn’t approve), or not using them altogether. Verbs in Spanish imply the grammatical person (which is why native Spanish speakers tend to skip the subject part of the sentence in English). Adjectives, tho, still carry the gender.

Only time will tell how it’s going to be addressed. The x and @ just look weird, and don’t have a phonetical translation. This is key for a broader acceptance. Spanish has always been a language that you write as you pronounce. AFAIK, there isn’t a break like this in the language. Even blue jeans is now accepted as bluyín (pronounced the same as in English).

re: #161 KGxvi

One last thought on this digression I started… Latin American also seems like a solid term that would accomplish what advocates of Latinx are after.

The problem with plain Latin as a replacement adjective is that it is already tied to a mostly dead language that spawned several extant Romance languages, including Romanian and Italian. Latin-o/a/x/@/e has combined geographic and linguistic components, and is almost universally applied to speakers of Spanish and Portuguese (less frequently French) who specifically come from the Americas. Italian and Romanian native speakers almost universally grew up in Europe and neither country ever had any real colonies in the Americas for those languages to apply to the new label. As such in ambiguous circumstances it could be confusing as to the which Latin the speaker meant.

“This is an impertinence up with which I will not put”, Winston Churchill probably didn’t say, but he should have.

Reminds me of another possibly apocryphal example of Churchill’s wit.
It was 1946 and the new Labour government had started nationalizing all the major industries in Britain (including electric power). Churchill, then the opposition leader, went into the parliamentary men’s room and found the Labour PM, Clement Atlee, relieving himself at one end of the long trough-like urinal. Churchill took up a position at the opposite end, a good ten feet away, and proceeded to do the same. Atlee said, “What’s wrong, Winston, feeling unsociable today?”
Churchill responded, “No, Clem, it’s just that every time you see something big, you try to nationalize it.”

Has trump said anything about the disastrous flooding in the Carolinas? I seem to remember the GOP attacking President Obama non stop when naturall disasters happened. He had to visit everywhere, inspect the damage, talk with the people, the politicians, the responders etc etc

Looking at the pictures is more than heartbreaking. I have lived through flood & when the water goes down and the immediate danger is past - we are left with no power, no home and mountains of stinking mud. Everything you own is covered in the stuff and all you want to do is walk away and never come back - but where do you go - who will help restart your life?

With the FEMA chief being referred to prosecutors and no-one ready to take his place & trump not giving a damn about anyone (other than self), will there be any help at all?

Other than retweeting FEMA and other agencies, his last actual tweet about the storm that I could find was yesterday noontime. And the storm was still wreaking major havoc in many places and not beginning to finally recede.Yeah—he’s a prince.

He sort of admitted, around 2008 or so, that he actually preferred being in the opposition. Which makes sense, it’s a lot easier and more fun to bitch about what the other side is doing than to actually be responsible for shit getting done. Especially when your ideology is basically “fuck you, I got mine.”

Now Churchill has topped a poll of history’s funniest insults with a famous jibe directed at either the socialist MP Bessie Braddock or the Conservative Lady Astor, the first female MP (depending on which version of the story you hear).

When accused by one of them of being ‘disgustingly drunk’ the Conservative Prime Minister responded: ‘My dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.’

My guess: while Flake and Corker were saying things publicly about postponing the vote, more Republican Senators were saying it privately, or saying they’d be a “no” vote.

There is heat in the background on this. The Republicans cannot be out front about anything in Trump Times, but they are probably hearing from a lot of people they were not expecting to hear from on Kavanaugh.

And I bet a lot of them are Republican women.

This is getting real bad for Mitch as it goes.

Every hour is making Kavanaugh look worse and worse and the party with it. But Trump has them boxed in and they all suffer for their dishonesty.

The next round of polls are gonna be a real downer Mitch.

I’ve been ranting much the same all day. I fucking hate them.

I’ve always disliked the GOP mind you. One of my earliest political memories aside from the Gulf War and Yugoslav Civil War was the rise of Newt and the shut down in the 90’s. Kept my mom out of work and I was raised in a Democratic family but I really thought until recently that there were certain things that we all could agree on regardless of ideology like: Rape is bad, you shouldn’t conspire with foreign governments against your own, and Donald Trump is a fucking clown. They’ve shown that they disagree on all three.

Rape is only bad if it becomes public. I don’t doubt for a moment that the rumors or suspicions about this incident were known to the Senate GOP, hence the parading around of the soccer team he coaches and the letter of 65 “women he never raped!” letter was ready to public the very next day after the story dropped.

Same as always. GOP bigot brigade know nothing base will cheer, ignoring that they’ll be the ones hardest hit by tariffs because they are the consumers of the goods being taxed or are the manufacturers of the goods that retaliatory tariffs are imposed on by China. Lost sales and business overseas, higher costs at home.

Also: McTurtle has to be seriously steamed at having Diane Feinstein play him like a cheap Kentucky fiddle over this: I’m sure the scenario he had planned was to let the Dems squawk a bit, then pass Kavanaugh through to the full Senate (on a party-line vote, but it wouldn’t matter, since the fix was in), then rush a confirmation vote: again, probably strictly party-line, but as long as it was at least 50-50 (with VP Pence sitting by to deliver the coup de grace if necessary), who would care? Brett Kavanaugh would be on his way to the SC, and the Repubs could chalk up another win.
Then DiFi hurled a stinkbomb into the Committee room: now the GOP is being seen as having to either defend or dump an accused sex-sleaze (and IMO it’s the lying/whitewash more than the “teenage hijinks” bit that’s making Brett and the GOPers look bad): which will just spin the whole thing out even longer - and time isn’t (again, IMO: I fervently hope I’m right) on their side.
Feinstein may be older than dirt* (and I wish she weren’t running again), but she’s had enough time in the Senate to learn a few things: accurate monkey-wrench tossing seemingly one of them…

It only took 37 seconds for two bitcoin ‘celebs’ to start fighting on a cruise ship (Mashable)

The cruise ship wasn’t big enough for the both of them.

On September 10, somewhere in the Mediterranean, two well-known rivals in the cryptocurrency space stood awkwardly poolside. A crowd, sporting a mix of cryptocurrency-themed t-shirts and bikinis, lounged nearby on the ship’s upper deck. One man, sweatpants sloshing in the water, steadied a tripod. The Bitcoin versus Bitcoin Cash debate was about to begin.

It only took 37 seconds to spiral out of control.

I’d also note that the Mormon Church also excommunicated Sam Young, who wants the church leadership to stop asking children if they masturbate in one on one interviews. His crime: failing to shut up when his leaders told him to.

newsweek.com

Personally, I’m neither here nor there about Romney getting in, because it’s likely. But the church’s interference on the MMJ proposition has a lot of people riled. I’m personally hoping it turns out like what happened with the 21st Amendment. The Utah legislature’s vote put the repeal of the 18th Amendment over the top.

ETA: Based on my experience living in Utah, I would say that Orrin is upset that a woman is challenging a man. There may also be a bit of “let’s cover this up, that’s what we’ve done at church for so very long.” Hatch is very old, those days are over, buster.

A reasonable guess: quick GOP polling of those around them sez that they’re in serious danger of stepping in very deep, very malodorous shit if they look too much like they’re trying to whitewash Kavanaugh and these assault allegations. I’m also guessing Kennedy stepped up as he’s one of the lesser-known-lights of the SJC and still has a shred of public credibility left. Maybe.

This is only anecdotal data but…I do have friends on the right, we’re allies against child abuse coverups in churches. (Yeah, I know, strange bedfellows and all that.) One of those friends posted to Twitter: “Dear @GOP @SenateGOP This is the day you lost my vote for good.” I was *STUNNED*. She’s really pissed off about Kavanaugh.

Gotta love how the GOP’s total failure to do proper vetting of Kavanaugh beyond “His rulings are totally cool with us” is being spun as “THE DNC HID THIS FROM US UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!”

For people who didn’t know anything about this, they worked awful quick to put together “proof” of his innocence.

Fan and her managers have been accused of using “double contracts” to conceal her income. One contract has the verbally agreed upon amount of pay, and the other has a drastically lower one. The lower one is the one that is filed officially with the courts, and the amount she pays tax on.

Imagine if the IRS had the power to arrest and detain tax evaders, until they are politically “rehabilitated,” and you get an idea of Fan’s plight. She’s a high profile citizen, with millions of fans and social media followers. The government is making an example of her. She will probably be compelled to make a public confession and apology for her tax cheating.

*sigh*

My dad’s watching his recording of The Five and they (of course) are portraying Kavanaugh as the victim of mistaken identity, Professor Ford as a partisan liar, and the DNC as opportunistic partisans. When I pointed out that the very same group of fuckers who want Kavanaugh to get the benefit of the doubt wanted Franken ran out on a rail, my dad defended that.

(Paraphrased)

“He did a lot worse than that!”

“What did he do?”

“I can’t remember, but he admitted to it!”

“He admitted to a tasteless photo, the sort of shit you used to do and have shown off to me and others.”

You saw as I did that he could get over his partisanship and then he’d be at in an ugly way. So this nonsense the passport office is doing to deny citizenship to the “wrong” people if they were born at home or to a midwife and the birth certificate isn’t filed by an institution such as a hospital?

How long before they go after other people? I was born at home in the Sixties. My son was born at home in the Eighties (and I filled in his birth certificate application).

It would appear my citizenship stripping fears from last year are coming true.

It’s interesting how his denials have moved from “I never did that!” to “I was never even there!”

I saw the video. Roger Ver is an asshole, and Jimmy Song is adamant in his views about Bitcoin. It would have been an interesting debate, if Ver had been willing to abide by the rules of debating.

For the uninitiated, Ver and his Chinese associates created a Bitcoin alternative, called Bitcoin Cash, back when the Bitcoin network was clogged with transactions stuck in limbo and transaction fees were abnormally high. Ver claims BCash is the legitimate successor to Bitcoin, and is true to Sataoshi Nakamoto’s vision of the Bitcoin network. Song, meanwhile, thinks BCash is just a way for Ver and his associates to make lots of money by hoodwinking users into thinking it’s better than Bitcoin.

It’s not unlike the divide between Sunni and Shi’ite in Islam.

Being on a ship full of cryptocurrency advocates with no way to escape would be my idea of hell on Earth, and this is coming from someone who uses cryptocurrencies. It would be marginally better than being on a RWNJ cruise, but not by much.

Tammy believes that Prof. Ford is honest and genuine…but she’s obviously not right about Brett Kavanaugh being her attacker and the DNC is exploiting her to attack a good man. 1. That the press are so wrong for not joining Faux in celebrating the selective release of documentation pertaining to an ongoing criminal investigation at the order of the man being investigated.

2. That this is proof of how “transparent” Donny is and not at all a self-serving effort to save the ass of a man who continues to fight to keep every document that could hurt his ego or implement him criminally classified and under lock-and-key.

3. That the declassified documents will show that there was corruption at the “highest levels” of the DOJ, an issue that only came about after the FBI director did not recommend Hillary’s indictment.

S’all right.

My guess as to why they are targeting this particular area of Texas is a passport is a primary proof-of-citizenship document, and they can deny people the right to vote if their birth certificate is somehow invalid.

The idea that one or two people might (unproven) have an unlawfully issued birth certificate does not justify stripping hundreds of thousands of people of their citizenship. (That, and it violates UN treaties we’ve signed, but conservatives have hated the UN as long as I’ve been alive - part of the Declaration on Human Rights says that everyone has a right to a state, and no one is supposed to be made a stateless person.)

Even US law prohibits taking citizenship except for two reasons: a) You renounce it under oath or affirmation at a US Embassy or Legation, or b) You applied for it fraudulently.

The thrust of this passport nonsense is CBP is trying to say that everyone being denied a passport obtained their citizenship fraudulently. (The penalty for that is jail, deportation, or both.)

At what point does agitprop become actionable as incitement or conspiracy?

Remember just earlier when someone on FNC decried that there’s no respect for the police anymore. God, FNC is so pathetic. Just shut it the fuck down and give the space to a LGBT refugee program and have a kangaroo repeatedly kick Rupert until he apologizes for being a hypocritical shithead that pushed xenophobia on to Americans while being an immigrant himself.

What’s going on in San Francisco? I don’t see anything in the local papers.

I found myself wondering if Tucker’s gonna become the next Bill’O, advocating this shit right up until somebody acts on his advocacy, then suddenly going “I NEVER SAID THAT!!!”

In addition to San Francisco being code for “gay”, it’s also code for “sanctuary city.”

An illegal immigrant probably committed a crime so you know justice is needed because they won’t stop being a Sanctuary City meanwhile Brett Kavanaugh even if he did rape Professor Ford still deserves to be on the court because only white conservatives should be raping our women not those filthy Mexicans. //

What Tucker who btw knows nothing about criminal law doesn’t get is that Sanctuary Cities exist so trust can exist with people and their police department. It also means police will pursue real crimes not a petty misdemeanor like being undocumented. I’d love to see the stats but I bet you Tucker’s old collection of bowties that sanctuary cities have lower crime rates than non ones.

I almost feel sorry for him that this is what the former Republican number two hopeful is reduced to two years ago. Of course, Trump’s not doing much better. Neither is Rubio and his complaining about flags in movies. The only actually doing something is Kasich who while I’m not a fan of his does seem to actually be interested in governing.

I agree. I think the only thing saving from the white vans and private prisons are the rank incompetence of the administration.

But Ice is fucking terrifying and getting more and more emboldened. I have no doubt anyone who is public about their hatred of Trump is on a list or will be soon. And if they ever get truly organized, shit could get super real for everyone who doesn’t kiss Trump’s fat orange ass.

I won’t lie. Part of the reason why I stopped applying for federal jobs was knowing that with this administration, my social media presence would be looked at. I make no secret that I hate the bastard.

Well, I’m screwed. I’m not on social media (except for platforms like this one, Daily Kos, and Wonkette so I don’t have to worry about that, but I am not shy about my opinions of the maladministration.

If they were better organised, they could do things like organise county, city, and block political minders.

Paregoric: boy, was that good stuff! Years ago, my husband had a big vet bottle of it to use on horses with, umm, digestive difficulty. He got it when it was legal, and we just nursed it as many years as we could. When it ran out, we had to use vet quantities of a pepto type drug, and it wasn’t near as good. Ah, the good old days! And it’s just so fucking stupid as a stump speech talking point. Beto, unlike the Walking Shitstain has been in all 254 Texas counties at least once this year and has talked in every County Seat, and eaten in every County Seat. And I guarantee, in many of those little towns in the very rural areas of Texas, Q was what he ate and enjoyed.
