Cliff Notes: Ford is a liar who is turning a story spun up to save a marriage into an attack on an innocent man, this is all a pack of lies, Kavanaugh should be confirmed if the GOP want to keep the Senate, and the terrorists…er, the partisans will win if he doesn’t get confirmed!

Oh, and they’re hedging their bets majorly that no other women come forward.

See what I said about Murdoch downstairs. Yeah. Man fuck this. There’s been nothing that has shown that she’s lying. Kavanaugh meanwhile probably perjured himself already and I bet he’ll do it again next Monday.

Wow, the House can do something right:

In an effort to make the quantum computing industry more viable, the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed legislation that would establish a federal program to advance research and training in quantum computing. Drafted with help from University of Maryland quantum physicist Christopher Monroe, the bill will release $1.275 billion in funding for centers of excellence that will train quantum engineers. To develop quantum computers that can handle real-world problems, Monroe says the U.S. needs engineers who understand quantum physics and the principles of computer engineering. Monroe says it is challenging for companies to find engineers to develop scalable systems, pointing to IonQ, the quantum computing startup that he co-founded. In the next five years, quantum computers will run calculations that could never have worked with conventional hardware, according to Monroe. However, these early systems will only be capable of certain types of computation, and determining how to use quantum systems will fall to quantum software engineers. Monroe says, “When we build them, they will be useful for something.”

So, their version goes like this?: Her marriage is failing, so, in 2012, she picks some random name from her past, and he suddenly gets chosen for the Supreme Court so she has no choice but to continue her ruse?

Sound like desperation to me: and if another reasonably credible accuser surfaces, they’ll end up looking even hackier than usual.
But this is the WSJ: notorious for off-the-wall editorials even pre-Murdoch….

Can we run this on Trump:

Researchers from Osaka University and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan have created a machine-learning technique that is 90% accurate in detecting dementia in conversations between humans and avatars. The system learns the characteristics of elderly people answering easy questions asked by avatars, and picks up on indicators of dementia, such as response delay and certain intonations, articulation rates, and percentages of nouns and verbs. Osaka University’s Takashi Kudo said, “If this technology is further developed, it will become possible to know whether or not an elderly individual is in the early stages of dementia through conversation with computer avatars at home on a daily basis. It will encourage them to seek medical help, leading to early diagnosis.” The model distinguished individuals with dementia from healthy controls based on six questions, taking two to three minutes per question.

We could just present it as a new version of Fox where you get to talk to the show.

That’s how they’re spinning it: She created this story years ago to save her marriage. Atop that, we get this:

The more relevant question is why go to such lengths if Ms. Ford really wanted her name to stay a secret? Even this weekend she could have chosen to remain anonymous. These are the actions of someone who was prepared to go public from the beginning if she had to.

re: #420 HappyWarrior

What Tucker who btw knows nothing about criminal law doesn’t get is that Sanctuary Cities exist so trust can exist with people and their police department. It also means police will pursue real crimes not a petty misdemeanor like being undocumented. I’d love to see the stats but I bet you Tucker’s old collection of bowties that sanctuary cities have lower crime rates than non ones.

Oh, they know. They count on their viewers not knowing.

I won’t lie. Part of the reason why I stopped applying for federal jobs was knowing that with this administration, my social media presence would be looked at. I make no secret that I hate the bastard.

Well, I’m screwed. I’m not on social media (except for platforms like this one, Daily Kos, and Wonkette) so I don’t have to worry about that, but I am not shy about my opinions of the maladministration.

The very fact that the Thursday vote has been 86ed and the next testimony put off for a week make his confirmation look very iffy to me. It’s the history of most of the human race. If women (or men) don’t come forward immediately, others suspect their story. If they do come forward immediately, their story is picked apart in a public forum.

(Like it or not, that’s what we’re doing here with Kavanaugh’s accuser now.)

There are legitimate VI Amendment issues regarding facing your accuser in a court, which is bad enough for a rape victim. Conservatives are going with that “presumed innocent until proven guilty” in defence.

But the Senate is not a court and the VI Amendment doesn’t apply to Senate testimony.

Already doing that :). And never going to run for office.

I got an E-mail from The Economist Letters editor yesterday, pointing to the senior editor’s post for his rationale to invite Steve Bannon to their upcoming event in New York City.

I sent back that it was apparent they didn’t read my letter the first time, that we fought a war over these ideas and the whole world was involved, and I already have someone here mailing me locally-printed copies of Der Sturmer for free, I don’t want to pay for it.

I think the thing that has me most frustrated is have we always been this flawed and were our accomplishments in spite of this all? I hate to say it but I’m thinking yes and yes. We won WWII with our allies thank god but while still segregated in the trenches. We ended slavery. Thank God and then Jim Crow happened. The Labor movement accomplished a lot for the working man. Thank God and now we have people who have no appreciation for what Unions have done for them. We have the knowledge on environmental science. Great, but we also have a cottage industry of deniers who will attack anything based on science. We could be so much greater. But maybe humanity is the real problem. We create our differences. We white people told the black man he was black and thus inferior and dark to our white. I’m not ashamed of being white but I’ll never be proud of it either.

I dunno: to me the reason for trying to get Kavanaugh confirmed ASAP is pretty obvious- the GOP wanted to get Kennedy out, and their stooge in before the elections: they probably wanted to hedge against possibly losing control of the Senate - as it is, they barely had a margin to confirm Judge Brett even before the nom crashed ( as it seems to have). The Senate in the 116th Congress might be another matter entirely.

Yes, we’ve always been this flawed and worse. People are intrinsically flawed creatures. We can but try to improve.
And I can’t think of any particular reason to be proud of one’s race either. I understand the need to claim pride if you’ve been told your race is inferior, but in a better world, I’d like to think it will be irrelevant.

I want a day where a sexual assault victim isn’t treated with contempt. We don’t have this mentality to rich people who get robbed. “Well you know, I think you led that burglar on with your nice house. I’m not saying you deserved it but don’t make your house so gaudy.” or “Yeah the store got robbed but maybe they charged too much.” Sexual assault is one of the worst things you can to someone. I will confess here that I stupidly used to find prison rape jokes funny. I don’t anymore. As much as I want Trump and his family punished. You won’t hear this guy say stupid jokes about that if it comes to that. Rape is terrible. Rape is ugly. And there’s nothing funny about it. We all do stupid shit as kids. I did. you did. But most of us didn’t do what Brett Kavanaugh and his buddy Mark Judge did. And most of us if our employers found out we did in fact do something like that would probably want us fired. Kavanaugh does not deserve to be on the Supreme Court. He is unfit ethically and morally.

And for their brilliant hire over at the “Today” show:

Megyn Kelly Just Saying Maybe Christine Blasey Ford Is Bleeding From Her Wherevers (goes to Wonkette, more at the link).

She is going with the same accusations of other conservatives, that is, she gave a small donation to Bernie Sanders so that makes her a “leftist activist.”

Megyn Kelly! MEGYN! Oh my God!

Megyn Kelly decided to use the occasion of Brett Kavanaugh being accused of drunkenly assaulting Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when he was 17 and Ford was 15 to remind us all to #NeverForget to ask WHY THE FUCK DID NBC DECIDE TO PAY MEGYN KELLY A MILLION BILLION GAZILLION DOLLARS TO HOST A SHOW NOBODY ASKED FOR THAT ADDS NOTHING OF VALUE TO THE WORLD?

Kelly was herself a victim of repeated sexual harassment when she was at Fox News, and she memorably found herself on the receiving end of the misogyny of Donald Trump, who accused her of having blood coming out of her “wherever” when she asked him on a debate stage about his constant habit of demeaning women. That led Trump’s pigfucker supporters to harass her and death threat her and all the rest, which is strangely the same thing that’s happening to Dr. Ford, now that she has come forward and told her story of getting drunkenly assaulted by a young, giant-foreheaded Brett Kavanaugh. It was so severe that Bill Shine, who was the president of Fox News at the time, but has recently taken a job in the White House working for President Pussgrab, had to call the Trump campaign people and say, “You know, if you guys end up getting Megyn Kelly killed, that’s not going to be a good LEWK for you.”

Well, Megyn Kelly has ‘PINIONS about Dr. Ford’s story, and they are … the same as Donald Trump’s opinions? Which are “bitches be lyin”? Megyn? MEGYN! WTF MEGYN?

You know who is a political activist, Brett Kavanaugh. In fact, I will continue to argue that the only reason why Bush gave him that federal judgeship he has now was a quid pro quo for decades of loyal work on behalf of GOP causes whether it was bringing down Clinton, being on the Bush v Gore team, advising W on judges, etc. Kavanaugh is the most partisan pick I’ve ever seen for this position. I see nothing about him that suggests he’d act independently.

I’m trying not to get angry here guys. Really hard. There’s fucking two sets of rules in this country and it’s more and more apparently every goddamn day. If you’re a product of the elite especially the Republican/conservative one, you can put your hand on a 15 year old girl to silence them, lock her in a room with you and your drunk buddy, and turn up music so no one can hear her scream. And it’s hey no big deal. But if you’re a black kid. Everything wrong you ever did in your life is analyzed. Unarmed? Oh but did you have marijuana in your system? Did you one time get in a fight at school? Man fuck this so much. I am angry. I not only want Kavanaugh not on the court goes without saying, I want him out of his current spot and I want the fucker disbarred.

Also note that the writer of WSJ OpEd was an Opus Dei lawyer, just like Kavanaugh. I guarantee that there are not 12 parish priests in the US who know what “piccata clamantia” means.

FYI, it means “sins that cry to heaven for vengeance”.

I don’t know, but if it was my 16-year old daughter who had to fight her way out of an attempted rape by a drunk, self important, privileged prep school fuckup, I’d be crying for Vengeance from Heaven.

And I cannot imagine any parent who wouldn’t be thinking otherwise.

He was a little fucking shit.

And no, Ari Fleischer, it’s not about “Second Chances”. The fucker is a Justice on the DC Court of Appeals.

Seems like he’s already Peter Principled on his first chance well beyond his capacity. Fuck his ass right up the patootie.

Edit on Bush 43’s PR flak. Fucking spell check.

Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch without evidence claims opponent knelt during national anthem

GLENDALE - GOP Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch on Monday accused her opponent of kneeling during the national anthem at a public event last month but said she did not see it herself and was unable to name any witnesses who did.

Mandela Barnes, the Democrat seeking Kleefisch’s job, said he hadn’t knelt and that she was lying about him.

“This is like me saying my neighbors saw her buying a tiki torch at Menards,” Barnes said in a text message.

She puts up with so much shit and is… just so nice.

What conservatives are doing to Chelsea Clinton is what they did to Hillary Clinton all the way back when Hillary Clinton was First Lady of Arkansas.

Back then they saw her as a potential political threat, and spent the next thirty-odd years in what she called the “vast conservative conspiracy” aimed at undermining her (not with conservatives, but with those who had no opinion). They’ve carried out a baseless and ceaseless propaganda campaign against Hillary Clinton.

The same is going on with Chelsea Clinton, from the time conservatives attacked her as a child in the White House right until today. It was disgusting when they did it to Hillary and it’s disgusting now with Chelsea (perhaps especially because they attacked her - and Amy Carter - as children).

It doesn’t matter that Chelsea Clinton doesn’t seem interested in a political career now: She might be interested someday, so she must be maligned.

The only reason Amy Carter isn’t attacked today is she primarily dropped out of sight. That’s what they want Chelsea Clinton to do.

Teen prison guard fired in incident that left teen brain damaged gets reinstated and nearly $30,000 in back pay

A fired prison guard who falsely claimed she had repeatedly checked on a teen inmate before the inmate hanged herself in her cell has won reinstatement — with back pay.

Taxpayers must pay guard Rosemary Esterholm about $29,000 after the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission determined last week that she was wrongly fired in March and must get her job back.

The decision follows a round of firings in March around the time the state reached an $18.9 million settlement with a former 16-year-old inmate who was severely brain damaged after she hanged herself at Copper Lake School for Girls.

Copper Lake and Lincoln Hills School for Boys, which sit on the same campus north of Wausau, have been under criminal investigation since 2015 for prisoner abuse and child neglect. The facilities are slated to close by 2021.

re: #177 Eclectic Cyborg

God, the system is so fucked up.

In 2015, Copper Lake guards left inmate Sydni Briggs alone in a cell and did not check on her for more than 40 minutes even though they were required to regularly do so and she had recently expressed suicidal thoughts. They found her hanging in her room not breathing and with no pulse.

Esterholm filled out paperwork that day claiming she had checked on Briggs five times that morning, even though Esterholm wasn’t even on duty in the unit at those times.

At the time, the state Department of Corrections did not discipline Esterholm or the guards who had failed to check on Briggs. Esterholm’s bosses promoted her two years later, in September 2017.

But this March, as the state neared its record settlement with Briggs, officials fired Esterholm and another guard. They took those actions after Esterholm acknowledged in a deposition she had wrongly filled out prison paperwork and had not checked on Briggs before her suicide attempt.

re: #181 Anymouse 🌹

If more did this, it might move the needle on abortion as well.

A clinic counselor from Georgia stated:

I have long felt that anti-abortionism is a psychological contraindication to the abortion procedure. And that we don’t have to give everyone who asks an abortion. (my bold) An anti-abortion woman is likely to be uncooperative and will probably not follow post-op instructions or instructions on how to deal with complications. There is actually a case where an anti-abortion patient failed to go as directed to Emergency for an unrelated complication. She ended up dying, and her family sued the physician and badgered him publicly. Additionally, if you have a complication that day, it will be the anti-abortionist. I’m not talking about the patient who says, ‘I was against abortion until it happened to me’, or ‘I’m really against abortion, but I have to do this’. I’m talking about the picketer, the activist, the totally anti-creature who will come back to haunt us.”

As a reminder, Gini Thomas (wife of Associate Justice Clarence) was spreading anti-Semitic messages about George Soros and that Democrats are planning to lead a coup against Donald Trump.

In any other court, a jurist would likely be required to recuse if he was married to her and a case came up involving the Democratic Party. There is no way to get Clarence Thomas to recuse himself: There is no procedure for it. That would depend on Justice Thomas’s ethical compass (good luck with that).

It is an effective strategy to calmly refute a critic; that is the best approach to combat their hostility (and sometimes inflame them further). You can win an argument by retaining your equanimity while the opposition is reduced to ranting.

If Chelsea has political ambitions, she cannot just mute her opponents; rather she needs to learn how to outmaneuver them in public discourse.

Meet the Creationist Helping to Change Arizona School Standards on Evolution (Phoenix New Times, more at the link):

Arizona Superintendent Diane Douglas tapped a young-earth creationist to serve last month on a committee tasked with revising the state’s science curriculum standards on evolution.

Joseph Kezele, the president of the Arizona Origin Science Association, is a staunch believer in the idea that enough scientific evidence exists to back up the biblical story of creation. Douglas appointed him to an eight-member special working group at the Arizona Department of Education that completed a final review of the draft evolution teaching standards on August 30.

Kezele teaches biology at Arizona Christian University in Phoenix. He advocates teaching his version of “established, real science” in classrooms.

Evolution, he said, is a false explanation for life and should be taught so that students “can defend against it, if they want to.”

Food for thought: The GOP expected Kavanaugh’s character with women to come up, but they expected it to be something to do with his time working as a clerk for Kozinski. Hence why he was asked about that in the pre-hearing answers he submitted to the SJC. Hence the letter, the female character witnesses, the photo-ops with the basketball team, and other items meant to portray him as “friend to women.

They had no idea about Prof. Ford and her allegations have caught them totally flat-footed. Hence their screaming about how the DNC kept this “hidden” from them and how wrong it is that they didn’t “go through proper channels.”

Russia blames the Jews

If the shootdown of the IL-20 went as Russia said it did (Israeli fighter jets hung in the vicinity of the cargo aircraft because it is a bigger radar cross-section for SAMs), that was a colossal amateur mistake (by Syria).

On the other hand, if the RT story is true, what the Israeli fighter aircraft did would be a war crime (the Russian plane was over international waters and not a combatant between Syria and Israel).

This is going to be a cluster. There was also a French naval vessel in the area, so perhaps they have radar recordings to show as evidence for or against the Russian claim.

Russia is reserving the right to retaliate. Since they are not blaming Syria, that would be Israel.

It used to happen more often in the 60s and 70s. I was on a winter backpack at Echo Summit. We got 48+ inches in maybe 16 hours. We gave up hiking and just crawled into the tent. So fluffy you could swim in it, snow shoes sank 3 feet into the snow and came up with a foot of snow packed on top. It took hours to go less than 2 miles. Toes were frozen and socks caught on fire thawing them by the fire. I had actual ice crystals between my toes. These years you can drive up to 8000 feet in February.

Also at Radio Free Europe, Russia is making a new claim about the airliner shot down over Ukraine.

They are now claiming the missile battery used to shoot down the aircraft was originally manufactured and sent to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and never returned to Russia after Ukraine left the USSR.

More:

Defense Ministry officials made the claim at a news conference in Moscow on September 17, in an apparent attempt to discredit the findings of an international investigation that determined the system that fired the missile was brought into Ukraine from Russia before the Boeing 777 was shot down on July 17, 2014, and smuggled back into Russia afterward.

Kyiv swiftly disputed the Russian assertion, which a senior Ukrainian official called an “awkward fake,” while the Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said that it was still waiting for Russia to send documents it requested long ago and that Russia had made “factually inaccurate” claims in the past.

Going over the stats from California ISO. Ca looks like it could produce 33.33% of it’s energy in 2018 from renewable sources. Solar and wind energy production costs are now down around the cost of natural gas. Natural gas production has reduced CO2 output through new combined cycle turbine generators.

Switzerland accusing Russia of espionage, specifically on the laboratory testing for the nerve agent used in the attack in Salisbury:

A diplomatic war of words between Switzerland and Russia has intensified, with the Swiss demanding that Moscow cease spying activities on its territory after two suspected espionage cases came to light in recent days.

“The Swiss Department Of Foreign Affairs has called on Russia to immediately end illegal activities on Swiss soil or against Swiss targets,” it said on September 16.

The Swiss ministry said it summoned Sergei Garmonin, Moscow’s ambassador in Bern, to protest Russian activity in Switzerland.

The statement did not cite specifics, but it came a day after newspaper reports said Russian spies had allegedly targeted a laboratory in Spiez that was testing the nerve agent used on Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in the English city of Salisbury in March.

The lab also tests suspected weapons of the type allegedly used by Russia’s ally, the Syrian government, in that country’s civil war.

Gotta love the double standard that says Kavanaugh denial hinging on his not remembering the party or attending it is sufficient, but Prof. Ford being unable to recall details like the house the party took place at casts doubt on her reliability.

Republican Grift: It’s not just for Washington.

Ricketts rejects calls for resignation of State Auditor Charlie Janssen (Goes to the Scottsbluff, NE Star-Herald, more at the link):

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts rejected calls for the resignation of the state auditor on Monday, saying if he had a direct employee who was taking three-hour lunches at a sports bar during work hours, like State Auditor Charlie Janssen, he would “counsel them” rather than fire them.

“That’s what progressive discipline is all about,” said Ricketts, in his first extensive comments on The World-Herald’s investigation of the auditor’s work habits.

“We would have asked them to make changes, similar to what Charlie has promised to make, and would have gone from there,” the governor said.

“What really matters is whether the person going to change their behavior,” Ricketts added.

The comments came after the head of the Nebraska Democratic Party charged that the governor was “doing nothing” in the wake of the investigation, and was instead providing “political cover” for a fellow Republican rather than demanding his resignation.

“If anyone else in the state had said I’ll show up at 10 a.m, stay at the office a couple of hours, then spend three hours at lunch and then go home, they’d be fired immediately, and that needs to happen here as well,” said Jane Kleeb, the State Democratic chair, at a press conference Monday.

Nebraska State Auditor is an elected position, so Mr. Janssen cannot be fired. He is running for reëlection. His opponent is Jane Skinner (D). If you feel like throwing some Sorosbux her way to help oust conservative grifters in a red state, her campaign site is

Fox is desperate to shift attention away from the alleged sex predator Kavanaugh and the self admitted sex predator and unindicted coconspirator Trump by claiming that Mueller’s still going on a witch hunt despite being 100% in his targeted individuals cutting deals.

Mueller has indicted and gotten plea deals from all the Americans he’s set his sights on. He convicted Manafort on 8 of 18 felony charges, and Manafort realized that a plea deal was in his best interest. Manafort was in the infamous June 2016 meeting.

That’s bad news for Kushner and Junior. It’s also bad news for Trump, who lied to the nation about his role in that meeting, and lied for Junior (putting together that idiotic statement afterwards claiming it was about something other than getting dirt on Clinton).

Mueller’s sights are set on everyone in Trumpworld from Trump on down, and he’s been working from the bottom of the campaign on his way up. That’s not entirely true, since he started with Flynn, who was Trump’s NSA, cochair of transition team with Pence, and key adviser to campaign, Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser, etc.

Trump’s fucked, and everyone seems to know it except the Trump nuts and Fox misinformed viewers. The GOP continues covering for Trump because of his high approval rating among GOPers, and that Trump keeps furthering the right wing agenda.

But the moment support for Trump dips in the GOP base, he’s toast.

Ever since Stormy Daniels said she was writing a tell-all book, there has been feverish anticipation about what dirt she’d reveal about Donald Trump—but it’s safe to say no one predicted this. According to a copy obtained by The Guardian, the book gives excruciating detail of her alleged affair with Trump, including one nightmarish image in which she compares the president’s penis to Toad—the incredibly annoying mushroom character from Mario. “He knows he has an unusual penis,” Daniels writes in a book fittingly titled Full Disclosure. “It has a huge mushroom head. Like a toadstool… I lay there, annoyed that I was getting fucked by a guy with Yeti pubes and a dick like the mushroom character in Mario Kart… It may have been the least impressive sex I’d ever had, but clearly, he didn’t share that opinion.” So, now you know.

On the medical front:

Infectious Theory Of Alzheimer’s Disease Draws Fresh Interest

(more at the link)

Dr. Leslie Norins is willing to hand over $1 million of his own money to anyone who can clarify something: Is Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia worldwide, caused by a germ?

By “germ” he means microbes like bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. In other words, Norins, a physician turned publisher, wants to know if Alzheimer’s is infectious.

It’s an idea that just a few years ago would’ve seemed to many an easy way to drain your research budget on bunk science. Money has poured into Alzheimer’s research for years, but until very recently not much of it went toward investigating infection in causing dementia.

But this “germ theory” of Alzheimer’s, as Norins calls it, has been fermenting in the literature for decades. Even early 20th century Czech physician Oskar Fischer — who, along with his German contemporary Dr. Alois Alzheimer, was integral in first describing the condition — noted a possible connection between the newly identified dementia and tuberculosis.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who was mocked online after he was recorded shaving at his seat on a commuter train headed out of New York City said he was just trying to clean up after days spent in a homeless shelter.

Anthony Torres, 56, told The Associated Press that the people judging him on social media don’t know the struggle he’s been through in his life.

“My life is all screwed up. That’s the reason I was shaving on the train,” he said.

A fellow passenger on a Thursday evening New Jersey Transit train took video of Torres, sitting in his seat, steadily swiping away at his lathered face and tossing the shaving cream from the razor onto the floor. The video , posted on Twitter, had 2.4 million views by Monday afternoon. Another video showed a clean-shaven Torres with a beer in his hand.

The self-grooming earned its share of negative comments on the internet, with insults like “slob,” ″animal” and “nasty.” Others humorously lauded his steady hand with a razor. A few cautioned against passing judgment and suggested people didn’t know the whole story.

Well, Donald Trump did tell Republican voters to only listen to him on the news.

In the wake of some Republican primaries in June that went the way the White House wanted, Donald Trump interpreted the results as proof that Democrats would have a difficult year at the ballot box. “So much for the big Blue Wave,” the president wrote on June 6, “it may be a big Red Wave.”

That didn’t make a lot of sense - Republican victories in Republican primaries do not diminish Democratic prospects - but two months later, Trump was at it again. “[T]here will not be a Blue Wave,” the president wrote on Aug. 5, “but there might be a Red Wave!”

In all, looking exclusively at Trump’s tweets, he’s talked up the idea of a “red wave” - a reference to major Republican gains in the 2018 midterms - seven times since summer began.

And while it’s easy to laugh at such analysis, Republicans are confronting an awkward problem: many of the party’s voters actually believe the president’s assurances and are feeling quite confident about this year’s midterms. The New York Times reported over the weekend:

America First Action, a political committee aligned with Mr. Trump, conducted a series of focus groups over the summer and concluded the party had a severe voter-turnout problem, brought on in part by contentment about the economy and a refusal by Republicans to believe that Democrats could actually win the midterm elections.

Conservative-leaning voters in the study routinely dismissed the possibility of a Democratic wave election, with some describing the prospect as “fake news,” said an official familiar with the research….

After the last round of Trump tariffs, the US trade deficit actually increased. Why? Because Americans still need those items and will pay the higher prices until something cheaper comes along.

So, raising tariffs will only increase the trade deficit. Meanwhile, China plans to retaliate and raise *its* tariffs on US goods.

scmp.com

Beijing has said it will cancel trade talks. The Chinese middle class, which had formerly grumbled Xi Jinping was at fault, is now coming around to blaming Trump.

Those of you familiar with kudzu will find some parallels here with the callery pear tree.

From the 1960s to the 90s, the callery pear was the urban planner’s dream. A seedling selection named Bradford was extensively cloned to become the ubiquitous roadside tree of America’s post-war suburban boom. The Bradford pear seemed to leap from an architect’s idealised vision. It was upright and symmetric in silhouette. It exploded with white flowers in early spring. Its glossy green leaves shimmered coolly in summer, and its foliage turned crimson, maroon and orange come autumn.

And it flourished everywhere - in poor soil, wet or dry, acidic or alkaline. It shrugged off pests and diseases. Millions of Bradford pears would be planted from California to Massachusetts and would come to signal the aspirations of post-war suburbia. Like the cookie-cutter suburbs themselves, the Bradford pear would embody that quintessentially American idea of mass-produced uniformity.

But like a comic book super-villain who had started off good, the Bradford pear crossed over, turning from thornless to spiky, tame to feral. Worst of all, it became invasive and is now an ecological marauder destined to continue its spread for decades. Generations yet to be born will learn to hate this Asian invader.

However, the long slog of ballots with only one choice on them appears to be over, and the GOP is going to have to fight to retain seats.

China fires back.

BEIJING — Beijing will immediately retaliate against President Trump’s new tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports, setting the stage for a protracted dispute that could raise prices of household goods in both countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has refused to budge amid mounting threats from Trump, who vowed to place higher border taxes on practically everything the United States buys from China if Beijing unveils new duties next week.

“In order to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests and the global free trade order, China will have to take countermeasures,” the country’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement. “We deeply regret this.”

The Chinese government previously warned it would hit back with tariffs on an additional $60 billion in American goods following Trump’s escalation, which would slap higher border taxes on nearly all U.S. exports to China.

Older people dying out who remembered the New Deal and how it helped them and life before the New Deal. The Democratic Party’s increasing social liberalism on a national level though the DNC platform has been pro-choice for a long time. And finally the right’s playing of identity politics. I still contend and I hope Lizardom will agree with me that Kavanaugh’s judicial career has been a giant quid pro quo for his work first for Starr in the 90’s and later for Bush’s campaign and later administration. I don’t doubt that Kavanaugh is smart but he’s an ideologue not a judge. In fact, I’d even suggest that he is the exact kind of judge that conservatives project onto liberal judiciary picks.

Ehh. With the proxy fuckery they’re involved in in the Syrian conflict the Russians can go pound sand as far as I’m concerned. They don’t get to claim be a non-combatant party there.
Also, too: yeah that’s pretty dumb by any reckoning. Makes you wonder when Russia will figure out it’s not a particularly great idea to hand advanced anti-air systems to a bunch of undisciplined, ill-trained proxies. (then again by the sound of things their own folks aren’t that much better, so yeah)
If nothing else, good thing it’s a Russian military plane going down this time.

It’s a shame when a political party that blocked the other party’s last scotus nominee has its effort to ram through its latest scotus nominee at warp speed derailed by an “11th hour” revelation. Just awful.

Russ Feingold weighs in on Kavanaugh, explaining his own line of questioning over Charles Pickering.

In fact, there’s clear evidence showing that Kavanaugh lied under oath during the 2006 confirmation hearing for his spot on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. I should know: I was one of the senators on the Judiciary Committee who questioned him.

I asked Kavanaugh about his involvement as White House staff secretary in the highly controversial 2001 nomination of Charles Pickering Sr. to the 5th Circuit. Many of us were concerned about a 1994 hate crimes case in which Pickering decided that a 25-year-old, who had participated with two others in a cross burning, was deserving of a reduced sentence.

During the Senate’s consideration of Pickering’s nomination, we had also learned that the federal trial judge solicited and collected letters of support from lawyers who had appeared in his courtroom, some of whom had cases still pending before him. This was a clear breach of judicial ethics, so I asked Kavanaugh about it:

Sen. Russ Feingold: My first question is this. Did you know that Judge Pickering planned to solicit letters of support in this manner before he did so? And if not, when did you become aware that Judge Pickering had solicited these letters of support?

Brett Kavanaugh: The answer to the first question, Senator, is no. This was not one of the judicial nominees that I was primarily handling.

We can surely hope. Certainly not all of our candidates will win seats, maybe not even a large minority of them.

However, the long slog of ballots with only one choice on them appears to be over, and the GOP is going to have to fight to retain seats.

I don’t know what caused the situation for the Democrats in Nebraska, as that was the problem when I first moved here.

It does show that both grass-roots organising from inside the state, with structural help from the national party and from outside the state can turn things around.

it should never have been one or the other
it’s a coordinated effort

We’re told by Trump and otehrs that Hispanics shouldn’t be allowed in because they’ll rape and then you got the WSJ saying if an alleged rape happened as described by Professor Ford that it was no big deal and they even managed to throw Reagan’s name in for some bizarre reason which I found peculiar as hell. Trump called for the death penalty for teenagers younger than kavanaugh who were accused and then cleared of a rape. There is a double standard and it starts with Trump himself.

re: #412 makeitstop

This is the argument I was making yesterday when this came up.

Trump is so impetuous and incapable of rational/serious thought, that he can’t be bothered by the details - namely what those documents might actually contain and how they would dispute his longstanding claims of bias against Trump.

As we know from all the evidence to date, he benefited from FBI leaks, namely against Clinton - all while keeping word of investigation into Trumpworld on the down low until he fired Comey when Comey would not end the investigations into Trump.

What we know is that Trump wants to selectively declassify documents, while keeping others secret - hoping to shift opinion in his favor.

This has a chance of success if this admin were competent, but they aren’t. They’re going to end up revealing just how criminal they are, and even his own lawyers know how bad things are (mostly because they don’t have a clue as to how far down the rabbit hole Trumpworld goes in criminal conduct; they can’t get straight answers from Trump to point where they’re hoping Mueller doesn’t subpoena Trump because they can’t get straight answers under direct questioning by Trump’s own lawyers). When your own lawyers are warning that Trump lies - a lot - you’re in trouble.

When you call out a character like this, RWNJs invariably respond that you are picking out a minor fringe dweller for whom their movement is not in any way responsible. “Firefighter” Mark has major RW street cred, though, since Liberty University is making a movie about him.

It was officially announced Jan. 26 that the Liberty University Cinematic Arts department would be working on a feature film getting national theatrical release.

“Commander” comes after the program’s first feature film “Extraordinary,” and a series of short films. “Commander” is an adaptation of the book “The Trump Prophecies.”

The film, which is slated to be released in October, is the true story of an ex-firefighter named Mark Taylor who in 2011, while recovering from PTSD, had a vision that Donald Trump would be President.

Executive Director of the Cinematic Arts program and producer/director of the film Stephan Schultze said that the experience provided to students through this project is invaluable.

“There is no other film school in the country that makes feature films with their students,” Schultze said. “Not only do we make movies, but this’ll be the second movie we’ve had a national theatrical release, which is very hard to do.”

The message the film’s producer and financier Rick Eldridge wants to get across is how there is power in prayer and the impact it can have on a group of people mixed with patriotism.

“I really want it to be a patriotic, a God and country message that we can understand,” Eldridge said. “The best thing I can take away is when people leave the theater they are really feeling proud about their country and the things God has blessed us with.”

464
lawhawk  Sep 18, 2018 • 8:41:28am

Is the GOP wedded to Kavanaugh? McConnell seems to signal that he doesn’t care one way or the other. Trump is wedded to Kavanaugh, and I think that has to do with Kavanaugh’s expansive immunity to criminal charges/indictments by a sitting president.

Trump doesn’t give a shit about anything else.

But since this is Trump’s guy, the GOP are going to continue this farce, even as they all know how bad the guy is - because he’s also the guy who gets them a step closer to repealing Roe and rolling back civil and voting rights. But everyone else on the Heritage/Federalist list would do that too.

So, I’m not sure what the game plan is here, especially as Kavanaugh’s nomination is under increasing scrutiny and doubt is creeping in among even the GOP Senate. Are they thinking they can string this out until right before the election? Do they think this fight energizes their base?

Can it energize the Democratic party base? Seeing how voters didn’t think the judiciary was a big issue in 2016, not sure it resonates now. Trump’s idiotic trade war is a bigger issue/threat, as is his immigration policy. The best thing going for Democrats right now is GOP incompetence.

Like GOP NY Rep. Collins, who was indicted on insider trading, insisting that he’s going to remain in the race to run for reelection for his upstate district.

McConnell might be a great tactician in how to manipulate the rules to the GOP’s benefit, but everyone else in the GOP doesn’t seem to have a clue how things work.

And of course, Mueller’s got more indictments that will be coming too.

I do wonder how far they are from “rape should be legal.”

I think we’re a long way from rape being legalized. Rape being illegal is pretty much universal. It also exists pretty much universally. What changes is the way “real” rape is defined.
Woman out alone without a man capable of guarding her? Not “real” rape.
College girls not locked in their dorm after 7 pm? Not “real” rape.
Employer/employee relationship or rich/poor divide? Not “real” rape.

Those situations get treated more or less seriously depending on the culture.

I did slip through the cracks as a white guy and wound up not going to college. Fortunately despite my disadvantage in reading people, I’m able to earn a good living thanks to computers. It could easily have gone differently.

I should add that I also was lucky to grow up in a high income area too. The IEP program helps well to do kids like me far more than it does less well off kids.

Tamir Rice is the best example of racism and police brutality. He was a child playing with a toy gun in a country that worships guns, where open-carry of real guns is legal, and the cops shot without saying a word because he was black.

John Crawford is another example.

He was holding a bb gun in a Walmart in an open carry state and murdered by cops.

Same story. Blacks do not get treated under the law or by law enforcement in same fashion as whites.

Exactly. I definitely would have slipped through the cracks. I have no doubt of that. I think what honestly makes me a little more sensitive to hardship is while my life hasn’t been difficult is I’ve known a little of it.

By total coincidence, I’m doing an analysis of autism diagnoses and therapy at work today, looking at what our costs will be if we expand treatment to older kids. I hope the study leads to expanding treatment.

Sinister as hell. I saw his gang in action in Iraq. When they aren’t shooting up the locals, they are swaggering around trying to intimidate them. It’s all they know. I can imagine them running the war in Afghanistan. His sister, Princess Amway, as SecEd is enough to make you believe in conspiracy theories.

What proper channels? The Kremlin?

They just don’t and white America refuses to see that and it infuriates me so much especially when these are the same people who claim they’re against the govenrment having too much power. What could be a bigger abuser of power then shooting a man holding a BB gun in an open carry state. Maybe in his rush to obstruct justice, Trump may end up torpedoing his own battleship…

Probably: Trump defenders’ enablers’ attempts at manipulating the narrative by selective release of “classified” stuff haven’t worked out very well so far.
But then again, that’s “so far”.
I think the WH is starting to get desperate here, with Mueller racking up indictments, pleas and convictions on a regular basis - based, one has to assume, on solid, unassailable evidence - and Trump’s trashing of whatever minimal credibility he has left with every tweet he sends.
My guess (as blabbermouth Nunes seems to suggest) that this latest doc dump is going to be a very carefully edited/redacted/cherry-picked release of out-of-context/misquoted communications all designed to show “bias” in the DoJ/FBI investigations. The main audience for this BS, though is likely to be the RW media, who are going to be primed (and almost certainly coached) to trumpet these “revelations” to the sky to try to gin up outrage among the MAGAts before the elections.
That whatever these declassified documents actually say, and if they are factually accurate, is irrelevant to the bubble crowd: I just hope the rest of the media and the country are paying attention.

Voters Oppose Republican Policies

In fact, the Republicans’ own polling confirms this. Josh Green has obtained internal Republican survey data, which includes the hilarious finding that Republican voters refuse to believe Democrats might win Congress. More pertinently, it reveals that voters are not actually onboard with the party agenda. The survey found “increasing funding for veterans’ mental health services, strengthening and preserving Medicare and Social Security, and reforming the student loan system all scored higher than Trump’s favored subjects of tax cuts, border security, and preserving the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.”

The popular ideas, in other words, all involve higher domestic spending. The Republican survey also warns that a “challenge for GOP candidates is that most voters believe that the GOP wants to cut back on these programs in order to provide tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.”

Probably because they do!

enough bold?

The Republicans fucked this up by portraying him as this fucking All-American Boy but he’s more Ted Bundy than Jimmy Stewart. And yeah I stand by that, he does have more in common with a serial killer than he does a beloved actor. I never treated anyone the way he did Ford. Not even close.

I went digging through Beto’s TL, looking for BBQ. I found him at a BBQ place, with no evidence that he ate any. I think he went there to talk. I had to go back a month.

And before that one, I found this:

Smoothies. Cruz will bite into that one, after somebody tells him what a smoothie is. I had to wade through issue after issue, town hall after town hall, in parks, school auditoriums, VFW halls, porches, everywhere but a backyard barbecue.

He does look like he should eat more.

Tamir broke my heart. That one was really ugly. And the assholes in the Cleveland PD made it worse for the Rice family by attacking them.

Remember, that is the police department that went on an almost all cop cars available chase for a criminal car that happened to backfire causing the cops to think someone was shooting at them. Chase was on.

The car pulls over and the shooting starts. The cops started to think there were all kinds of guns shooting at them. There were. Other cops guns.

When the smoke cleared 137 shots were fired by 13 cops. The one person was shot 23 times and the other 24.

Yeah, they tend to overreact. No problem.

Wiki - Shooting of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams

By the way, 6 cops were fired.

5 were reinstated after an arbitration hearing a few years later.

It’s possible to cross-examine someone — even someone asserting that she’s been the victim of a sex crime — without sounding like a gratuitous ass.

I mean, it’s definitely not possible for the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee. But it’s possible.

SupersedingHat
@Popehat
I mean, there’s no way the Senate Republicans can handle examining Ford without sounding absolutely awful. That’s not to say there are no reasonable questions to ask. There always are. That’s to say they are incapable of asking them without sounding like a Lifetime movie villain.

with respect to the present situation, you’ve already blown it with the word “cross-examine”

White America cares about their wallets. Shooting black people becomes a problem when relatives of the murder victims win large settlements.

Not even then. LAPD pays out more than $50 million in settlements every year (2016 was a near record, with $80 million. And the Rampant Division scandal all told was $125 million). Plus of course the cost to the city and the department of the lawyers and their support staff.

Thank how many better cars, radios, bulletproof vests, etc they could have bought with that money. Or better counseling and more time off for officers who had to deal with traumatic cases that weren’t their fault. Or adding a whole other precinct in a neighborhood that really needs it.

Well, unfortunately, I can see a “third way”: the SJC hears from Prof. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Monday: the Committee Democrats will probably question her respectfully: likely the Committee Repubs will berate, disparage and probably insult her to her face; then Grassley will rush a vote, which will pass on party lines, and the nom will go to the full Senate ASAP (with the RW media shitstorm dialed up to infinity).
Who is “lying” and who is “telling the truth”, still less issues of “character”, is irrelevant to today’s Republicans: they have a mission to accomplish, and - as usual - will stop at nothing to accomplish it, rules and customs be damned.
