The Corrupt Republican Plot to Maintain Control of Government

Politics • Views: 30,412

Good analysis by Brian Beutler: The Corrupt Republican Plot to Maintain Control of Government.

Facing the real prospect that their long-sought fifth anti-abortion Supreme Court justice might go unseated, and President Trump’s growing legal exposure, the Republican Party is charging into election season with a two-fronted disinformation campaign, in a desperate effort to salvage conservative control not just of the Court, but of Congress and the White House as well.

Specifically, they are maximizing confusion about whether Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a 15 year old girl when he and she were both high school students, and about the legitimacy of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. And they are advancing both goals with naked abuses of power.

Speaking of corrupt Republicans:
NRA Says It’ll Spend at Least $1 Million on Pro-Kavanaugh Ads

The National Rifle Association says it’ll spend at least $1 million on television ads urging the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in states represented by four vulnerable Democratic senators and a Republican considered a key vote on the nomination.

The advertisements promoting President Donald Trump’s nominee will run on cable and local broadcast stations as well as on digital platforms in Alabama, Alaska, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia. It adds to the flood of money from outside groups on both sides of the confirmation fight that will take place in the Senate in the fall.

“The NRA strongly supports Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court because he will protect our constitutional right to keep and bear arms,” Chris W. Cox, executive director of the group, said in a statement on Tuesday. “It’s critical that all pro-Second Amendment voters urge their senators to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.”

re: #636 dangerman

for the R’s - from now on this farce is all about trying to rehabilitate kavanaugh’s character. nothing else.

- either nothing happened. nothing at all - she’s a complete and total liar
or
- something happened, anything at all - and he cannot be a supreme court justice.
no explanations, no excuses, no ‘mitigations’

- if something did happen, then either he was blackout drunk and doesnt remember or else he’s the liar

AND - if something did happen, then either kavanaugh lied to mcgahn or mcgahn and the administration lied to us

there is no third way

the accusation is credible enough. this is long past rehabilitation. find someone else.

Well, unfortunately, I can see a “third way”: the SJC hears from Prof. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Monday: the Committee Democrats will probably question her respectfully: likely the Committee Repubs will berate, disparage and probably insult her to her face; then Grassley will rush a vote, which will pass on party lines, and the nom will go to the full Senate ASAP (with the RW media shitstorm dialed up to infinity).
Who is “lying” and who is “telling the truth”, still less issues of “character”, is irrelevant to today’s Republicans: they have a mission to accomplish, and - as usual - will stop at nothing to accomplish it, rules and customs be damned.

The Evangelical opposition to anything that Jesus may have stood for disqualifies them from religion-based input on this. Their religion is a self-serving cult.

Maybe the yam will bring you some paper towels after he’s through fucking up the cleanup operations down here.

Speaking of ass-kissing—here’s Foghorn Leghorn puckering up:

McMaster: “I’ll tell you what, though, we are delighted to have had the attention and communication with President Trump and with (his) administration — officials and cabinet members.

“I think virtually all of them have been in communication numerous times. I know the President’s office has called … (state) Rep. Richie Yow (R-Chesterfield) and the (Chesterfield County) sheriff, I think three times in the last couple of days. There’s constant communication, and that’s something that’s very important.”

And supposedly Lindsey and Tim are flying down with him to get that much needed “concern” facetime. Good time to point out that, after Sandy, everyone in the SC delegation (except, of course, Clyburn) voted against the aid bills.

Criminal records show [suspect Collin] Richards has been charged with at least a dozen crimes, starting in 2014, including domestic abuse, assault, harassment, intimidation with a deadly weapon and theft. I don’t buy the senility argument. Too wrapped up in his own narcissism? Sure, that I’ll buy. But I don’t think he’s senile. I think he’s a narcissistic asshole who has never worked a real job* in his life and thus has never had to deal with the consequences of his actions.

*He’s never had a paycheck that didn’t have his family name as the issuing party, he went to work for dad, and then took over the company. And through it all had people willing to cover/clean up for him (in part by keeping him from doing anything to stupidly high profile).

He knows he is guilty. He’s been guilty of doing questionable stuff his whole life. It is his way.

So I don’t think even senility can be used as an excuse. Familiarity with his own ways overrules.

Probable Trump: “I don’t remember doing that. But, I know I probably would have, so it is a safe bet I did!”

Jeez… these two engaged in a huge crime spree. Sex assaults/rapes of what investigators believe were perhaps 1,000 women.

I’m repeating: 1,000 women. This pair alleged to drug and rape/sexually assault women, and once two women came forward, investigators found more evidence, including videos.

Addendum:
Notice the crickets from the usual right wing nutters who think that undocumented persons are a greater threat than red blooded Americans. Turns out this one pair is accused of engaging in more crime than undocumented persons; and it fits the pattern where native born citizens engage in crime at far higher rate than illegal or legal immigrants.

From the linked article:

Some of the other details are pretty bad. He apparently told an “acquaintance”** that he was thinking of raping/killing a woman, but the acquaintance never said anything to police. He also showed up at the house of another “acquaintance” in bloody clothes and dirty. He showered there, and left with the clothes in his backpack. As far as I can tell, this acquaintance did not notify authorities either. He also apparently gave the possible murder weapon to another friend to hold. Again, not clear that any of these people came forward—rather, it sounds like he became a suspect after tracking dogs followed the victim’s scent to his encampment.

**Not intended to be scare quotes—this is how the people were described in the article I read.

A man who was raised a spoiled, self-centered, egotistical bastard who couldn’t (and maybe still can’t) control his dick, groomed since birth for this specific job.

I wouldn’t doubt that Trump is damn near begging Kavanaugh to hang on and stay in it, because, if he were to withdraw or if enough GOPers heed the tea leaves regardless of McConnell and Grassley’s machinations, that means that Trump doesn’t get a “victory” and he just won’t and can’t have that.

But I think a girl should be able to go to a party and have fun without her life being ruined.

I am guessing we have lost both JordanRules and Bass Reeves over the ‘n’ word thing?

Haven’t seen a comment from either since that. Bummer.

Sticking to black blogs, they don’t ever have to face that from people they considered friends. Personally I don’t think one generally-good person having a bad night and being supported by his friends is a reason to go after being here for a long time, but I’m not in their position, and can see how bad it looks to someone who’s faced abuse using the word - and thought it was banned from Liberal blogs and would be shouted down.

They can, as long as they’re under 10 or over 30, the parties are pretty safe.
/yes that’s fucked up.

No woman should go to a high-school or college party that is not made up of close friends, and close friends rape women too. A lot of men are monsters, especially in the high-testosterone years, which is why some women work to make themselves intentionally unattractive. It’s a really bad situation, and wouldn’t happen if we were more than smart animals.

Kavanaugh is an accused sex predator who allegedly raped a woman.

Trump’s a self-admitted sex predator whose admission corroborates 18 women.

Of course he meant no harm, other than maybe to Palin, but I can totally understand why support for use of the word, even from people who are not racist, is a problem for people who have dealt with racism all their lives. We all make mistakes, especially in this medium where we react and post quickly. We should be more forgiving when someone owns up to their errors and tries to make amends. I have been guilty of holding a grudge against a coworker for years because of a cruel remark he deliberately made once (not against me personally, but against someone I cared about — and he made it because he thought it was funny). It may have been better for both of us if I had forgiven him, instead of holding on to it.

People are still insisting that wasn’t offensive, and they’re right as far as that it wasn’t exactly a Golly. Cultural differences were a factor. Anti-black racism isn’t considered offensive in Australia like it is here. Their black people were exterminated or put on reservations, and are in the position the Native Americans are here. We’ve seen how the right sees caricatures of native Americans here.

We all fuck up. You feel bad, that’s what owning it feels like. Feeling bad, and hanging in there and growing. Hang in there. and here.

I wasn’t directly involved with the matter (I only saw everything after the fact), but here’s my two cents:

I understand why and how TSG used the n-word about as how Sarah (or Bristol, for that matter) would lament how Obama presented Meyer his MOH, and I think that most, if not all, of the positive comments and updings about it were from people who know idiots like the Palins and could totally see her saying that or something like it. Hell, when I saw TSG’s infamous post, as a Southern-fried gentleman, I could totally relate to it, because I know people like them, some of them family.

*clears throat*

However, as a middle-aged white guy stepped in a bit of American history and popular culture, I know that the n-word, in any form, is not a word I can ever say or put in someone’s mouth, not even in a critical or pop culture context, because that word and its derivatives are so burdened and loaded with over 200-300 years of hate and ugliness. I get why some black people of all stripes, from the person on the street to artists like Chris Rock and Richard Pryor, use or have used the word in their works in attempts to take that hate and ugliness out of it, to depower it, but it’s nothing that I’ll ever be comfortable with saying.

Ever.

Back to Richard Pryor about the subject, even he stopped using it, as he related in Live from the Sunset Strip about his trip to Africa; when he said what he said, you could tell that it caught the audience by surprise and, when they finally got what he was saying, the applause was thunderous. I’ll let the man speak for himself:

One thing I got out of it was magic. I’d like to share it with you. I was leavin’, and I was sittin’ in the hotel… and a voice said to me. “Look around. What do you see?” And I said. “I see all colors of people doing everything.” And the voice said, “Do you see any n*****s?” And I said. “No.” And it say. “You know why? ‘Cause there aren’t any.” And it hit me like a shot, man. I started cryin’ and shit. I was sittin’ there and said… “Yeah. I’ve been here three weeks. I haven’t even said it. I haven’t even thought it.” And it made me say. “Oh. My God. I’ve been wrong. I’ve been wrong. I’ve got to regroup my shit.” I said, “I ain’t gonna never call another black man a n*****.” You know. ‘cause we never was no n*****s. That’s a word that’s used to describe our own wretchedness. And we perpetuate it now, ‘cause it’s dead. That word’s dead. We’re men and women. We come from the first people on the Earth. You know? The first people on the Earth were black people. ‘Cause anthropologists… white anthropologists… The white people go. “That could be true, you know.” Yeah. Dr. Leakey and them found people remains… five million years ago in Africa. You know them motherfuckers didn’t speak French. So black people, we the first people that had thought. We were the first ones to say. “Where the fuck am I? And how do you get to Detroit?” So you can take it for what it’s worth. I ain’t tryin’ to preach. I’m just talkin’ about my feelings about it. And I don’t want them hip white people calling me no n*****… or telling me n***** jokes. I don’t like it. I’m just tellin’ you it’s uncomfortable to me. I don’t like it when black people say it to me. I really don’t no more. It’s nothin’. It don’t mean nothin’. So I love you all, and you can take that with you. I guess you all say…

I was wondering why you had not really said anything.

As far as Kavanaugh. The Republicans actually said they were cancelling the committee vote late yesterday afternoon. I made a comment about it.

The reason was they knew they were going to have another hearing to allow both parties to be questioned. I guess once they knew Monday was the new hearing, they knew the vote was dead.

Kavanaugh is still a candidate. Wounded, yes. Bleeding actually. But still alive.

And there is question if the professor will make the hearing. It was mentioned earlier they did Monday quickly without contacting both parties to see if they were available. The Republicans may hope she doesn’t show up.

It was never used in my house, but I certainly read it in books probably by 5th grade. I think it’s important for kids to understand the context and the historical times and how language changes.

Can’t overestimate Kav’s connection to Starr probe as a reason DJT nominated him.

Or you can’t underestimate it, or something. The connection is probably important, another FU from DJT to the Clintons.

An awful lot can happen between now and Monday.

I saw a tweet last night quoting a WH aide as saying that Trump wasn’t heavily invested in Kavanaugh, and that if he became too much of a story they’d dump him and ‘nominate someone else within 20 minutes.’

Saw a story this morning that said McConnell was lukewarm to Kavanaugh (or words to that effect).

Maybe they mean nothing. Or they could be bracing themselves for a hard landing.

I wouldn’t count those wingnut tears til they start falling: despite the setback in what the GOP was counting on to be a quick triumphant process, Kavanaugh is still not out of contention, and - regardless of any other factors - the GOP are still likely to push his nomination to a vote.

He’s not a good person. Just because people say he is don’t make it so.

I made a joke the other day, that Jeffrey Dahmer could probably have found 65 classmates to write a letter saying he’d never killed and eaten THEM. But the larger point is that we base our judgments of people on limited interactions. I knew people on the Bowsite who invited me to hunt with them, to come and stay in their houses, eat at their tables. People who were very generous to those they saw as being in need.

Friendly, funny, warm, generous people who say and believe terrible things.

Nazi Germany was full of Friendly, funny, warm, generous people who turned a blind eye to the most ruthlessly efficient genocide in human history.

re: #233 ObserverArt

Grassley said earlier today they have sent her emails and haven’t gotten a response.

My read of it is that only 3 people would have known it happened - Ford, Kavanaugh, and Judge. Ford might never have told anyone, till 2002. Kavanaugh and Judge might not have said anything either. This sort of sexual assault thrives on the victim being too ashamed to tell.

That depends on others at the party not noticing them dragging her into the room, turning the music up, her running out, putting shit together and gossiping based on known patterns of behavior like teenagers do. A stretch, to say the least.

Of course her memory is the most clear because it was crystalized and frozen in amber by the sheer trauma of the event, but I am goddamned certain that Kavanaugh, at the very least, has in his darkest moments grave personal doubts about how he conducted himself back then. The real problem is that those doubts about his past behavior and maturity do not inform the person he is today, the man who still believes in controlling women’s bodies against their will.

More likely to avoid the massive political and legal complication of a pregnancy. Otherwise he wasn’t planning on getting caught. Also, men who engage in that shit to their younger employees aren’t generally looking for soul mates, they largely get off on the power differential, on the physical expression of their own importance by receiving pleasure without having to give it.
