NYT Report: Rosenstein Suggested Wearing a Wire to Record Trump, Discussed 25th Amendment

Politics • Views: 29,686

Well now, here’s an interesting new report at the New York Times: Rosenstein Suggested He Secretly Record Trump and Discussed 25th Amendment.

WASHINGTON — The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, suggested last year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit.

Mr. Rosenstein made these suggestions in the spring of 2017 when Mr. Trump’s firing of James B. Comey as F.B.I. director plunged the White House into turmoil. Over the ensuing days, the president divulged classified intelligence to Russians in the Oval Office, and revelations emerged that Mr. Trump had asked Mr. Comey to pledge loyalty and end an investigation into a senior aide.

Mr. Rosenstein was just two weeks into his job. He had begun overseeing the Russia investigation and played a key role in the president’s dismissal of Mr. Comey by writing a memo critical of his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. But Mr. Rosenstein was caught off guard when Mr. Trump cited the memo in the firing, and he began telling people that he feared he had been used.

Mr. Rosenstein made the remarks about secretly recording Mr. Trump and about the 25th Amendment in meetings and conversations with other Justice Department and F.B.I. officials. Several people described the episodes, insisting on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The people were briefed either on the events themselves or on memos written by F.B.I. officials, including Andrew G. McCabe, then the acting bureau director, that documented Mr. Rosenstein’s actions and comments.

I have to say I’m a little skeptical of this one. The sources are anonymous, but more than that, there are no sources that claim first-hand knowledge of Rosenstein’s remarks — everything is coming from people who heard about it from other people or saw other people’s memos.

I can’t help suspecting this is a deliberate leak by the Trump gang to set up Rod Rosenstein to be fired, as a first step to shutting down Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Welp. Rosenstein’s likely gone by next week.

I guess this is the beginning of the end of the investigation once he gets his puppet in place and fully insinuates that the entire thing was treason against him or something?

Fucking shit sucks.

Shot:

Chaser:

There’s no reason to trust anyone in Trumpworld about anything. Rosenstein could have been frustrated about the entire situation he was thrown into, and sarcastically said it, but never acted on it. But it’s just as likely that this was a setup by others in Trumpworld to try and end the investigation using this as a pretext.

too late, i think

Cohen Has Been Talking to Mueller for Weeks

…Trump has to worry about three offices going after him: Mueller’s, Underwood’s, and the SDNY’s. If he were to fire Mueller, that wouldn’t eliminate the latter two. And probably worst of all for Trump is that Cohen likely knows the answer to many of the questions the three offices have, and is apparently spilling all the beans in hopes of getting a lighter sentence for the eight counts he pleaded guilty to last month.

This seems like the sort of line in the story that means it probably shouldn’t have even been published because it’s likely a nothingburger:

A Justice Department spokeswoman also provided a statement from a person who was present when Mr. Rosenstein proposed wearing a wire. The person, who would not be named, acknowledged the remark but said Mr. Rosenstein made it sarcastically.

Again, I can’t imagine Trump being stupid enough to try Saturday Night Massacre II: the Stupidening, but maybe he really does believe that the GOP will win in November and that nobody can touch him.

It’d actually be impossible for him to do it. It’s one of the advantages of our system basically being a patchwork of 50 different elections. The federal elections are run by the states, no way he gets all 50 states to go along with a plan like that. No way he gets any state to go along with it, honestly. Because if say 35 states hold elections and 15 don’t (or even vice versa) the subsequent constitutional crisis - who gets sat in the next Congress? - likely leads to civil war or some other unwinding of the Union.

I just realized, Trump has replaced 4 cabinet level Secretaries less than 2 years into his presidency. Sure, one of those was because he brought the Secretary into the White House to be Chief of Staff - though actually saying that doesn’t really make it better - but that seems like an awful amount of turnover, doesn’t it?

Hey now! Look at the entire right wing universe suddenly taking the word of the New York Times and demanding Rosenstein be fired. This stinks to high heaven.

this is a stupid story and a totally misleading headline (the nyt, not lgf)

anonymous sources vs a first hand denial
and he said it was sort of a joke - which it probably was and everyone at th etime knew it

how about ‘anonymous sources suggest rosenstein’s 25th amendment joke fell flat’
or some other equally inane nonsense

Indeed, I know all that. This is Trump of course and he, ahem, doesn’t pay attention to things like laws or separation of powers and federalism. If he really thinks he is about to have a Democratic Congress come in to impeach him, I think he will do something to basically throw the chessboard on the floor. Maybe claim there is evidence of a terror attack coming on election Tuesday, call the NG under his control and basically shut down polling places “for safety”.

Or maybe something we just can’t think of yet. Some of this insanity was predicted in advance and some of it is stuff none of us saw coming…which is what terrifies me as we get closer to a legal reckoning. I don’t think he will go quietly like Nixon. He is a gutter fighter and a criminal, and he will do as much damage as possible on the way out.

If they run it, they are discredited when it turns out to be false, playing into Trump’s narrative.
But until it is discredited, it feeds Trumps narrative about the DOJ/FBI.
And even when it is discredited, the RWNJ will say it is true even though it came from the lying NYT.

It doesn’t really matter since the only support that seems to matter, both in Washington, and in the media at large, is Republican support, and they’ve continually made that clear time and time again.

They’re going to shitcan this and use the media’s own credulity to obfuscate their way out of any consequence. Again.

Not entirely sure that’s true any more.

When you look at the underlying attitudes of the GOP, and the utter ignorance of the so called “independents” you quickly see that they would totally be on board with suspending elections, eliminating all vestiges of democracy, as long as they could maintain their feelings of superiority to blah people.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t do it “nice and legal-like”. Get a few more laws against protesting, laws requiring standing for the flag, a few more supreme court decisions in favor of gerrymandering and secret political contributions, etc. Historically, dictatorships go to great lengths to operate under the cover of law, because it keeps the authoritarians from ever questioning the actions. There are plenty of laws that could be created to suspend elections as long as there is a compliant (complicit) judiciary and military.

If they run it, they are discredited when it turns out to be false, playing into Trump’s narrative.
But until it is discredited, it feeds Trumps narrative about the DOJ/FBI.
And even when it is discredited, the RWNJ will say it is true even though it came from the lying NYT.

I love that video. The Maels were pretty brilliant.

Wonder if it got a chuckle out of Mr. Crabbypants…

Wow, I looked it up. Moz was a Sparks fanboi.

Sparks were so adored by Smiths vocalist Morrissey in his younger days that he allegedly used to steal bits of the bread rolls they had for breakfast. The Mael brothers returned the favor with this song. Russell Mael told Q magazine: “The song is about a guy telling himself that if Morrissey would lighten up he would maybe stand a better chance with this girl (who was obsessed with him). We wanted to head any possible misunderstanding off at the pass and we got Morrissey a copy of it early on. He loved it and was apparently playing it before some of his shows.”
In a Songfacts interview with Sparks, Russell Mael talked about Morrissey’s reaction to this song. “He didn’t promise to lighten up, but he really liked the song a lot. We were happy that he liked it.”

Russell added: “It wasn’t meant to be a derogatory thing towards him. It was observational. We did hear from him, and he liked it so much, in fact, we did a video for that song and he used the video to precede some of the shows that he did. He used it as one of the projections before he goes on. He has a sense of humor enough to like the spirit of that song. He likes Sparks so much that he can bypass that.”

Heh.

The old joke about the big annual Federalist Society event in DC every year used to be (don’t know anymore because I don’t run in those circles) was that after events were over, the conservatives would go one way and the libertarians would got another, and if you wanted a good time, you followed the libertarians.

The old joke about the big annual Federalist Society event in DC every year used to be (don’t know anymore because I don’t run in those circles) was that after events were over, the conservatives would go one way and the libertarians would got another, and if you wanted a good time, you followed the libertarians.

It would be the smart thing to do. I actually know quite a bit of D.C. libertarians due to some of my friends.

They used to, and I’m assuming still do, a national convention type thing in DC every year, so you get FedSoc members from around the country. I was supposed to go a couple of years and always found an excuse to skip it. Not sure if that was the smart thing to do or not, probably could have made some connections that would have helped me out early in my legal career.

Speaking of the FedSoc, I think the clerk we had this summer was a member but I didn’t get to know him that well after training and we never discussed politics. Seemed like a nice kid honestly. I think it’s just because while I wouldn’t call myself punk or hipster, I’m definitely more rebellious than your average conservative professional- beard, four tats, world traveling to obscure spots alone, pot fan, etc. I always imagined the conservative professionals as the grown up versions of the bro types I knew in high school and college. Ones that had parties but with just beer and liquor or if they had pot, it wasn’t good pot.

Kavanaugh Bears the Burden of Proof
Wittes

As recently as a few days ago, I was cheerfully vouching for Kavanaugh’s character.

..the allegation against him is, at least so far as one can tell from the press reports, credible, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

If Kavanaugh were to ask my advice today—and to be clear, he hasn’t done so—I would tell him he almost certainly should have his nomination withdrawn.

Let’s start with a blunt reality: The sum of the allegations against Kavanaugh is, if true, disqualifying.

also this:

It is possible to imagine his testimony shoring up support among those who want to support him but leaving everyone else with real doubt. This would be, in my view, a disaster for anyone who believes in apolitical courts. And it is not what Kavanaugh should want. Clearing one’s name sufficiently to convince only senators who are already ideologically aligned is not, in fact, clearing one’s name. It’s winning. And while winning may be the highest value for Trump, it isn’t actually the highest value—particularly for a justice.

If the people who helped construct and hype this notion really thought it would work, then this nomination is in on the verge of collapse. Whelan’s theory is astonishingly desperate, an outlandish and potentially defamatory Hail Mary that no rational person would find persuasive. His willingness to humiliate himself and destroy his reputation in a calamitously misguided effort to push Kavanaugh over the finish line speaks volumes. Hard as it may be to believe, this is apparently the best they’ve got. Their last, best hope to contradict Christine Blasey Ford rests on cobbled-together Zillow pages, Google Maps, yearbook photos, and a Facebook comment.

You have to understand - he really thought this Whelan thing was gonna be IT, that it was gonna save Kavanaugh’s ass. Instead, it blew up in his face.

A number of folks have gone back through the tweets and comments from the Wingnutosphere since Monday, and concluded that a LOT of them were either privy to Whelan’s nonsense, or at least knew that something was gonna come out. What’s not necessarily clear, though, is how many were in on all the details. If many of them were, then you really have to wonder about their thought processes, because you’d think at some point SOMEBODY would have tried poking holes in it.

I’m skimming through the book “Jewish Threat” by Bendersky and all this alt-right stuff is not even a regurgitation of the Nazi stuff, it’s what used to be mainstream in the American (and not only) military intelligence community in the beginning of the previous century (that’s where I’m at, the book goes on and on). It’s like reading a description of the Tsarist or Nazi propaganda departments, but those were all “upright”, respectable American citizens with impeccable credentials.

Very little has been written about America’s own history of anti-Semitism. In this shocking book, the first documented examination of anti-Semitism in an American governmental institution, Joseph Bendersky shows that such racism permeated the highest ranks of the U.S. military throughout the past century, having a very real effect on policy decisions. Through ten years of research in more than thirty-five archives, the author uncovered irrefutable evidence of endemic and virulent anti-Semitism throughout the Army Corps from the turn of the century right up to the 1970s. This fully developed and clearly articulated perspective had a direct effect on policy discussions and decisions, affecting such matters as immigration, refugees, military strategy, and the establishment of Israel. Written with novelistic intensity and attention to intriguing detail, The “Jewish Threat” forces us to revise some of our cherished notions about our country and its most revered leaders.

I was feeling somewhat nettled by some comments a friend of a friend made on FB about how few men even try to understand things like Dr. Ford’s experience and more generally women’s experiences, thinking she was being unkind to men.

Then I read ONE (1) tweet on the #WhyIDidn‘tReport hashtag and thought - Nah. Fuck men. Some of us try, but, Jesus, there’s a whole lot of horrible men out there.

Rachel was saying last night Kavanaugh has the first negative (more people do not want him than do) numbers in the history of polling for Supreme Court nominees. I think she said he is now at -4. A week or so ago he was as low as anyone ever before at +3 which had fallen from a +7 a week before that.

He is now a boat anchor for the party.

And the anchor is still going down seeking the bottom.

It seems to me that anonymous sources are a sword that cuts both ways: if we accept what anonymous sources say when we like what they say, we have to accept what they say when we don’t.

By the same token, if you spend 3 years claiming any anonymously sources mean that a story is completely untrue, then you can’t choose one anonymously sourced story that you like and assert that ONE STORY is true.

So, rather than simply accepting stories we like and not ones we don’t, we should perhaps see the story as reporting what the sources are saying, rather than reporting that what the sources say is fact. Sources say things they want to be heard/read, not because it’s the truth, but because they want people to think it’s the truth. 30 peoplein the Administration tell reporters the White House is in chaos, then 1) it’s probably in chaos, and 2) there’s no cohesion, or 30 prominent people wouldn’t be leaking.

So what do we make of the Rosenstein story? WashPo says the accounts from different sources are wildly divergent. It was serious, or it was a joke, or it didn’t happen. So…one of those. Or something else.

Amazing how the Republicans know so much about what happened in a sexual assault case that did not happen.

This may be the largest attempt to prove something they say is wrong right by all of the various reasons they have attempted. The flogging is so public and they really think right-wing media is powerful enough to cover for them.

It’s a damn machine they have running. Programmed to create alternate explanations as needed. Sort of like a ten year old giving 45 reasons why they were not the one that left the refrigerator door open even though no one else was around.

It’s an odd thing to say that, because it’s alleged that Kavanaugh failed in his attepted rape, that “nothing happened”. That’s like saying if I choke you within an inch of your life, but don’t actually kill you that nothing happened. Or if I break into your house, put all your valuables in a bag, but then get scared off and leave the bag, that nothing happened.

There’s a reason we make it also a crime if you attempt to commit a crime but fail to complete it.

He has said that his refusal to consider the nomination of Merrick Garland was the most consequential of his career.

Simply grabbing her and forcing her into the room is already assault.

Forcing her down on the bed and trying to remover her clothes, then putting his hand over her mouth to stop her screaming, all after turning up the music to cover any noise is attempting rape. Getting stopped by his buddy Judge piling on and Blasey escaping makes it ONLY attempted rape.

The other guy jumping on seems odd to me. It almost makes me think Judge was not comfortable with where things were going and was trying to break it up somehow, but without saying, “Jesus, Brett, stop that!”

But I don’t know.

It’s really getting to the point that I may have to take a long break from politics. I feel impotent rage every day.

I guess most people in this country want fascism. I fell like I don’t even have a country anymore.

I’m in the exact same boat. It’s distressing and deflating to see just how far we seem to backslide on the exact things that we were claiming ‘never again’ decades ago. And like I’ve said before, it feels like we’ve gone from feigned institutional ignorance to outright open institutional contempt. And all for the sake of permanent de factor GOP control over every single level of governance.

Something I fear we will not break in my lifetime at this point.

Yep—I’d say it’s the dumbest take of the day, but I haven’t seen what Charlie Kirk and Jacob Ahole have to say:

re: #339 Patricia Kayden

So Republican Senators would be cool with their daughters almost being sexually assaulted, right?

I’m sure Jesus will protect them…

Yep. A couple of days ago I mentioned that Biden wasn’t guiltless in the Thomas hearing by any means, blocking the testimony of witnesses who would have supported Hill. They never testified, and Thomas got in 52-48, the closest vote for a SCOTUS nom ever.
