Friday Night Jam: GoGo Penguin: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Sept. 14, 2018 | Colin Marshall — During his setup, GoGo Penguin’s pianist Chris Illingworth asked if he could remove our piano cover to “access the inside” and, after a few rotations of a screwdriver, he soon handed me a long plank of black painted maple, which has no convenient place to rest in the NPR Music office. If you look closely at the piano innards during “Bardo,” you can see a strip of black tape stretched over a few strings, opposite Illingworth’s bobbing head. It mutes a group of strings, turning them into percussive jabs and dividing the instrument into more explicit rhythmic and melodic sections. What you can’t see: GoGo Penguin’s audio engineer a few feet to the left of frame, dialing-in reverb effects on the piano, which we heard in the room. These two elements, in tandem with bassist Nick Blacka’s precise canvasing and drummer Rob Turner’s charged and delicate pulse, have heavily contributed to the sonic identity of this trio - a signal to jazz jukebox listeners that, “Ah yes, that’s a GoGo Penguin tune.”

GoGo Penguin models closely the leaderless jazz power trio set in motion by forbearers in The Bad Plus, but you can also hear the drippings of electronica groups like Bonobo, and drum-and-bass foundations akin to Roni Size with a bit more acoustic rattle (Turner even fashions his own prepared drum accessories from rope, duct tape, and metal rings, which you can see resting atop his ride cymbal and snare. He tells me he usually has more, but he hasn’t made new ones in a while).

But dissecting this music belabors what’s certain: this trio has become a reference point of their own for new school instrumentalists, a coveted achievement for any jazz group, though their appeal stretches far outside the jazz ecosystem. In fact, in 2018 alone, the band played some of the world’s most notable pop festivals like Bonnaroo and Outside Lands and top-tier international jazz festivals: Montreal and North Sea. This trio found a way to wedge themselves in the middle of the Venn diagram that overlaps musicians and music heads. Among my colleagues at NPR, I witnessed expressions ranging from studious squints to closed-eye meditation, those in the room experiencing GoGo Penguin’s tunes like they would a collage: the fine details as valuable as the larger shape.

Got a call tonight from a bandmate of She Who Must Be Obeyed that another bandmate (vocals, mando, harmonica) died from a massive heart attack. SWMBO went on a long walk. Came back when the mosquitos and the need to pee overcame her grief. He was 67. A master carpenter and woodworker, Steve was an amateur, but valiant musician, plugging away at what he loved to do. Very typical here.

SWMBO is a trouper, two gigs tomorrow, different ensemble, which she will do, but heavy hearts here in South Austin.

The sudden death of a dear friend just sucks. Steve doesn’t give a shit, of course, being dead, but I’m crying my eyes out for Becca, his wife, who is one of the sweetest women in the world. She was a career public school librarian.

I’m wondering if Greasley or other Senate Republicans are trying to get Kavanaugh to voluntarily withdraw … that way they have cover rather than trying to push him through and look like Trump clones.

There are plenty of anti-life, anti-government, anti-rights, anti-women conservative judges they could nominate.

While the clock is running out before the election, it would be easier on them: Well, we tried, but you know those obstructionist Democrats, … .

I still remember the skirt, it was a really deep purple corduroy and it was just this side of legal at my junior high because it was culottes. But damn, I could have done without remembering the rest of it. It wasn’t until a long time later, when I was a lot older, that I thought Mr. Floyd was a fucking perv. And yeah, that’s his real name. He’s probably dead by now.

Wrongly Convicted Man Set Free After 27 Years By Super Sleuths At … Golf Digest! (Goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

It’s not every day Golf Digest gets noticed as a source of hard-hitting investigative journalism, at least outside of reviews of titanium carbon fiber nanotech infinite improbability drivers or some such. But Wednesday, some journamalisming that started with a Golf Digest story about a guy who drew fantastic imaginary golf courses concluded with that guy, Valentino Dixon, walking out of Attica prison, 27 years after he’d been sentenced for 39 years to life. Not bad, Golf Digest. We give you a GOLF CLAP. And a Pulitzer if we had one, which, sadly, we don’t.

As Golf Digest says, the twists and turns of the case are a bit complex (they’re unraveled in more detail in this New York Times story), but it basically comes down to a local prosecutor who was determined to railroad Dixon for the 1991 murder of a 17-year-old, Torriano Jackson, in Buffalo, New York. The conviction involved

shoddy police work, zero physical evidence linking Dixon, conflicting testimony of unreliable witnesses, the videotaped confession to the crime by another man, a public defender who didn’t call a witness at trial, and perjury charges against those who said Dixon didn’t do it.

(more railroading of an innocent man at the link)

Geez, that’s scary as hell.

I won’t tell you about a film that was played back in the early eighties in the Alert Shack on Wednesday night before we switched out Alert Crews Thursday mornings.

Well, maybe I will. This was before Wimmens were allowed to join Combat Crews on Tankers, which happened in 1982. The Wednesday movies were referred to as “Training Films”. It was porn. A popular film was Ron Jeremy sucking his own dick to orgasm. Much applause and many men noting they would never leave their bedrooms.

Other popular features were “Taboo”, “Behind The Green Door”, “Debbie Does Dallas”, and “Deep Throat”.

Reagan was the President. Go figure. I found it an…interesting view of America at the time. I also knew that as soon as my term of service was up, I was out of that organization and into civilian life.

Pretty disturbing.

Just some Christian outlets trying to educate people on their faith and lead people to Christ (oh wait, they’re not doing that, they’re engaging in politics so they can gain power):

Franklin Graham on Judge Kavanaugh Accusation: ‘Not Relevant’ (Goes to the Christian Broadcasting Network, with video):

Evangelist and humanitarian [sic] Franklin Graham says the sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is irrelevant.

He told CBN News Tuesday, “it’s just a shame that a person like Judge Kavanaugh who has a stellar record—that somebody can bring something up that he did as a teenager close to 40 years ago. That’s not relevant.”

He added, “We’ve got to look at a person’s life and what they’ve done as an adult and are they qualified for this position so this is just an attempt to smear him.”

Dutch Sheets Warns of Intense Spiritual Warfare Surrounding Kavanaugh Hearings (Charisma Magazine):

Evangelist Dutch Sheets, who has led a prayer team in the hearing room this week, told CBN News his group has interacted often with protesters and learned they’re more organized than people realize.

“Some of my friends have seen them being paid,” said Sheets. “It’s an orchestrated effort to try and make a statement and convince the nation that they’re the mainstream and that this is what people want, but it’s not true, and we know it’s not true.”

Sheets told CBN News he has felt intense spiritual warfare this week.

WILL KAVANAUGH BE SUBJECTED TO BIGOTRY? (Capital letters their’s, goes to the Catholic League, more at the link):

Most critics of Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh are not anti-Catholic, but some are. We know this because both political parties have had their fair share of anti-Catholics—at every level of government—and they are not shy about flaunting their bigotry. In the case of Kavanaugh, it is the Democrats who bear watching.

Some of Kavanaugh’s critics are trying to get out in front of this issue by attacking those who protest anti-Catholicism, making them sound like some kind of well-greased cabal. Sarah Posner, writing on the website of the Nation magazine, makes the most lengthy effort to date.

Her article, “The ‘Anti-Catholic’ Playbook,” begins by asking, “Does Brett Kavanaugh think abortion should be illegal? A secret network of right-wing activists has spent millions attacking such questions as anti-religious bigotry.”

New Pa. stretch completes I-95 after 62 years (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Sometime this weekend in Bucks County, new road signs will be unveiled, barricades will be removed, and for the first time cars will drive on an I-95 that runs contiguously from Maine to Florida.

The typical interstate traveler may not be aware that I-95, begun 62 years ago when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal Aid Highway Act, was incomplete. Drivers in Southeastern Pennsylvania are only too familiar, though, with the confusing lack of connections among three major highways that overlap in Bucks County: the north-south interstate, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and I-295.

It’s a uniquely Pennsylvania problem: A driver heading north on I-95 could make no turns, take no exits, and yet suddenly end up heading south on an entirely different highway.

Naw, they’re not Nazis, genocide is good for you:

New Depths of Creepy (Goes to Juanita Jean’s, the World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, I like the name of her blog, more at the link):

Long time customer Don sent me some creepy stuff from a new movie being produced at Liberty University, the spawn of Jerry Falwell.

A guy named Mark Taylor believes that Donald Trump was sent by God to save all of creation and your happy butt, too. He’s probably wrong but he does have some interesting theories.

Opponents of the Great Hero Trump, Taylor says, are “not even human.” Their DNA, he reports, has been altered so that they are now “pure out evil” demonic creatures. These demonic non-humans, Taylor explains, “eat kids.” And because killing and eating children is illegal, Taylor says, the GHT will one day arrest them all.

Okay that’s one of the milder and maybe even plausible things.

Taylor warns that President Trump will soon declare martial law and begin publicly executing his political enemies. Actually, Taylor did not say this as a warning, but as a celebration.

Substitute “attempted rape” with “kidnap” (since kidnapping is a lesser-included charge with rape), since conservatives seem to have such trouble wrapping their heads around the idea of consent and revictimising a victim.

“Well, he was accused of kidnapping forty years ago, but that was so long ago, as such it’s irrelevant.”

But even from a cold-blooded political calculation point of view, it seems kind of crazy to me that the GOP is still pushing Kavanaugh.

As mentioned earlier, if he gets in, he now has criminal liability for sexual crimes with a minor in the State of Maryland. As well as for perjury in his Congressional testimony. And the GOP will not keep the Senate forever.

I am wondering if he will even be able to keep his federal judgeship if he backs down on SCOTUS.

As noted in the past, the sex crime (attempted rape) statute of limitation has expired. The law passed removing that limitation was passed after the time of the accusation, thus it would be unconstitutional to prosecute for the crime of attempted rape (ex post facto law).

On the other hand, there was never a statute of limitation on the crime of kidnapping (the lesser included offence in rape and attempted rape). The constitutional hurdle would be much easier with a charge of kidnapping.

I can’t remember the name of the County, but the appropriate County Sheriff in Maryland has said they’d be happy to open an investigation into the crime if Dr. Ford files a complaint. I’m pretty sure there’s no statute of limitations.

Some felonies and misdemeanours have no limitation (now) in Maryland. Statues of limitations have long been used in the USA to prevent the sort of political retribution that used to occur in the United Kingdom (our party wins, we charge leaders of the other party with a crime that happened so long ago there is no evidence or witnesses with the goal of ruining them).

Maryland’s repeal was only last year.

baltimoresun.com

Most states have statues of limitations on sex crimes just as any other crime.

In most states, a major barrier to bringing the perpetrators of rape and sexual assault to justice is baked into the law. Nationwide, 34 states and Washington, DC, have statutes of limitations on filing rape or sexual-assault charges, ranging from 3 to 30 years. In New Hampshire, charges must be filed within six years of a crime; in Connecticut, it’s five years. In Minnesota, it’s three. Some states tie the statute of limitations to reporting deadlines. If a survivor in Illinois comes forward within three years, the state has 10 years to file charges. If she takes longer than that, the case dies.

A ‘terrifying’ nursery rhyme drifted through a neighborhood for a year. The cause? Spiders.

washingtonpost.com

For months, usually around bedtime, the sound of a distant limerick drifted through a neighborhood in Ipswich, a seaside town in the United Kingdom.

The words to the nursery rhyme were familiar: “It’s raining, it’s pouring; the old man is snoring.”

But it wasn’t soothing. And it wasn’t putting anyone to sleep.

Quite the opposite.

For several residents, the tune was the stuff of nightmares.

“It’s very haunting,” Ipswich resident Alice Randle said in a recent interview with The Independent, a London-based online newspaper.

re: #101 Anymouse 🌹

You bring up a number of interesting points.

Sadly, I agree that it is unlikely for the judicial system in Montgomery County, Maryland to pursue any charges seriously. Due to, as you have pointed out, the length of time, the difficulty of proving these charges. And additionally, the fact that the dependent is extremely well connected with the legal system there.

Brett Kavanaugh Could Still Face Charges For Attempted Rape In Maryland
hillreporter.com

Gov. Hogan rules out state police investigation of Kavanaugh allegations
baltimoresun.com

Gov. Larry Hogan on Friday ruled out involving the Maryland State Police in any investigation of allegations that U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl more than 30 years ago in Montgomery County.

Additionally, you point out, correctly, I believe, that there was a tradition of not criminalizing political opponents. However, there are a bunch of issues I suspect that will alter that. First, the destruction of the norms and boundaries by the current administration. (“Lock Her Up”)

Second, the apparent fact that parts of the current administration appear to me to be indisinguishable from criminal enterprises.

Third, that many parts of the administration were criminal enterprises prior to taking power.

Fourth, the need to re-establish some sort of boundaries and rule of law.

What does this all mean to me? Since it is 4AM I admit to having no idea. Except that in the end, it is all really a political problem.

108
Anymouse 🌹  Sep 22, 2018 • 1:27:02am

re: #107 ckkatz

All of that and more is why my unasked for opinion is that the charge pursued should be kidnapping.

That doesn’t give the satisfaction of seeing Kavanaugh put on a sex offender registry if convicted.

However, kidnapping is a simpler crime to prove, has no statute of limitations, carries a severe penalty, does not draw questions such as “what was she wearing” or “how much was she drinking” or “how many dates did she go on,” &c.

Trump damages everything/everyone he comes in contact with. Kavanaugh would have been better off working out another way to get out of debt and gone nowhere near a SCOTUS nomination. Because trump was never properly vetted and (at the minute) gets away with all types of illegal actions, no-one else should consider they are in the same situation.

I’d take it as a good thing right now. When I had my valve replacement surgery a while back it took a bit longer then usual. That was because the doc was taking care of some stuff from my previous surgeries (this was my 3rd open heart. born with a bad aortic valve).
If they are already in there and see something else that needs taken care of they will if the patient is stable. It could just be case of making sure all is well before closing since the patient is in no distress.

During these episodes, my brain felt as if it were vibrating and then turning to concrete from the inside out. I wouldn’t lose consciousness, but I would zone out, unable to speak. My reality was twisted in ways both nonsensical and scary. Most everything I saw either changed physically or registered as something else in my mind. Kavanaugh is already one of the more unpopular judicial nominees, with approval ratings among the public in the 30s and even among the GOP he’s only in the 70s. The whole “He’s such an awesome guy!” bit seems to have been their only card to play and that’s becoming more tattered with each passing day. At this point, the only thing keeping him from being dumped altogether is that he really is their one shot at seating that 5th far-right vote before next January.

I share everybody’s absolute disgust for Kavanaugh.

As I’ve warned before, just wait till Maryland indicts and convicts him…then Hogan pardons him...

Somehow as a godless heathen, I managed never to even give the appearance of trying to rape or sexually assault anyone. Most pastors (including those who are not famous like Franklin Graham) would say I am the evil one, simply for lack of belief.

True this. Even though the notion that GOP Senators give a good flying about what the public thinks is most assuredly “facts not in evidence”. But: barring the unlikely scenario that:
a) Trump has another FedSoc-approved nominee* on the bench ready to go, and
b) the Senate GOP could get hearings set up, and held - AND get the nom out of Committee and before the full Senate before session’s end, and
c) the “new” nomination wouldn’t/couldn’t be held up

Yeah: Kavanaugh is it - for now. But the SC is too important to them: McConnell has, IIRC, said that is IS worth risking control of the Senate to get a “correct” Justice on SCOTUS. So big stakes.

Let’s not forget his mysterious financial records from 12 years ago, when he managed to finance a $1.2 million home with only a few tens of thousands in the bank.

Being generous, one could assume the bank figured a man with his background and earnings potential would be a good credit risk, but if I tried to buy a $1.2 million house with $25K in credit card debt and only $10K in savings, they’d laugh in my face and throw me to the curb. Somehow. somewhere, Kavanaugh found enough money to swing that mortgage, and still pay his country club dues and school tuition for his daughters.

Some attention being paid to the following article published yesterday in Science:

Ancient steroids establish the Ediacaran fossil Dickinsonia as one of the earliest animals

Confirming the identity of early animals

The first complex organisms emerged during the Ediacaran period, around 600 million years ago. The taxonomic affiliation of many of these organisms has been difficult to discern. Fossils of Dickinsonia, bilaterally symmetrical oval organisms, have been particularly difficult to classify. Bobrovskiy et al. conducted an analysis using lipid biomarkers obtained from Dickinsonia fossils and found that the fossils contained almost exclusively cholesteroids, a marker found only in animals (see the Perspective by Summons and Erwin). Thus, Dickinsonia were basal animals. This supports the idea that the Ediacaran biota may have been a precursor to the explosion of animal forms later observed in the Cambrian, about 500 million years ago.

Abstract
The enigmatic Ediacara biota (571 million to 541 million years ago) represents the first macroscopic complex organisms in the geological record and may hold the key to our understanding of the origin of animals. Ediacaran macrofossils are as “strange as life on another planet” and have evaded taxonomic classification, with interpretations ranging from marine animals or giant single-celled protists to terrestrial lichens. Here, we show that lipid biomarkers extracted from organically preserved Ediacaran macrofossils unambiguously clarify their phylogeny. Dickinsonia and its relatives solely produced cholesteroids, a hallmark of animals. Our results make these iconic members of the Ediacara biota the oldest confirmed macroscopic animals in the rock record, indicating that the appearance of the Ediacara biota was indeed a prelude to the Cambrian explosion of animal life.

Very many popular articles are running with misleading headlines or articles, though. As expected.

And this is before the creationists get into the act.

The link I gave is to Science, the journal of the AAAS. Yes the title is accurate.

Popular articles are running with wild claims.

What was discovered is that there are traces of the remains of cholesteroids still locked in the fossils, indicating the fossils were indeed animals (and not plants.)

I am sure there will be a lot of discussion within the scientific community about possible contamination, and also if other organisms on the tree of life may have evolved the chemistry we have today.

They bet the farm on Prof. Ford choosing not to testify, overextending themselves by saying they badly wanted to hear from her and would do what they could to make her “comfortable.” She called their bluff and now they’re locked into having a hearing, the only questions being when and under what terms.

Just since last night, we’ve gotten

- The story that Whelan knew Ford’s name before her identity came out in the news,
- Grassley’s oops moment, thinking Twitter was text messaging and sending a public tweet to Kavanaugh,

This is an awful story. This woman is traumatized to the point where she is thinking about leaving the country if he ends up on the Supreme Court. And it cannot be helping that there are a lot of people, including Senators, who want to basically burn her at the stake as the witch who is going to ruin their victory.

Ford had already moved 3,000 miles away from the affluent Maryland suburbs where she says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party — a charge he would emphatically deny. Suddenly, living in California didn’t seem far enough. Maybe another hemisphere would be. She went online to research other democracies where her family might settle, including New Zealand.

“She was like, ‘I can’t deal with this. If he becomes the nominee, then I’m moving to another country. I cannot live in this country if he’s in the Supreme Court,’ ” her husband said. “She wanted out.”

This is making me sick, sick, sick.

Professor Ford’s strategy of negotiating her appearance before Judiciary is beginning to bolster her case with people who weren’t paying attention early on.

As Kavanaugh’s vote hangs twisting in the wind, people are starting to dig in on the story in a number of places, and the depth and breadth of collusion between the committee and all kinds of bad actors is seeing daylight.

The longer they drag out the negotiations, the worse this whole nomination smells. And if the committee decides to say ‘Fuck it’ and hold the vote without hearing from Ford, they may as well fire up a chainsaw and just put it to their collective throats.

This is turning into a lose-lose for the GOP. I’m hoping Ford’s legal team can draw out the negotiations for most of next week. Kavanaugh’s nomination is taking on water. Another few days of bad news may just sink it altogether.

The DFW area has been getting steady rain since yesterday evening (this isn’t counting the rain we’ve gotten off and on over the week). Last night, Plano got 2 inches in 30 minutes, and they had to shut down I-75 because it had 2 feet of water; there were lots of people stranded on the highway.

Lake Ray Hubbard gained 1.35 ft in the last 24 hours.

The GOP has painted themselves into a corner here, big time.

If they fail to confirm Kavanaugh, the evangelicals threaten to stay home during the midterms.

And if they do confirm Kavanaugh, they stand to lose the lion’s share of the women’s vote, except maybe for those women in that CNN video.

And all the while, while Grassley tries mightily not to look like he’s utterly failing at pushing Kavanaugh through, Kavanaugh himself is, to borrow a term from the Watergate era, twisting in the wind.

And all this is happening on a weekend, when things are supposed to be quiet. Something’s gotta give here…

Not just Grassley, I think: Mitch McConnell has basically staked the chances of maintaining his Majority status on holding the Senate GOP together to confirm Kavanaugh: with the Opposition emboldened (I think Judge K’s popularity is low enough that red-state Democrats won’t - now - have to worry about their negative votes having serious repercussions at the ballot box), he can’t afford any defections. I don’t think McTurtle - or ANY GOP Senators - give a major crap about public opinion, but the stakes have been raised considerably.

So the Post finds out Prof. Ford’s name, calls up the White House for comment, then goes to press with the name of Kavanaugh’s accuser before she’s had a chance to come forward. If you were a mendacious, criminal president* with a lot to cover up and the walls closing in from all sides, isn’t this exactly the story you’d want out there as an excuse to fire Rod Rosenstein and then appoint someone who would fire Robert Mueller? Isn’t this exactly the kind of story that you would want out there in order to superheat the boilers of paranoia that drive your base, especially on the same day that you walked back your promise to feed the base declassified parchments from the Illuminati who run The Deep State? Isn’t this exactly the kind of story you would want out there on the day the news breaks that your old personal lawyer is talking to Mueller’s people about your campaign, and Russia, and god alone knows what else?

re: #301 Targetpractice

So the Post finds out Prof. Ford’s name, calls up the White House for comment, then goes to press with the name of Kavanaugh’s accuser before she’s had a chance to come forward. The White House immediately goes into attack mode, filtering the name through intermediaries in order to have operatives working on lines of attack in a matter of hours. And we’re supposed to believe that at no time did Kavanaugh know about this or the plans for attacking her.

If they didn’t talk to kavanaugh it’s one hell of an assumption that “attack” is the right thing to do

The myth of the male bumbler

There’s a reason for this plague of know-nothings: The bumbler’s perpetual amazement exonerates him. Incompetence is less damaging than malice. And men — particularly powerful men — use that loophole like corporations use off-shore accounts. The bumbler takes one of our culture’s most muscular myths — that men are clueless — and weaponizes it into an alibi.

Breaking that alibi means dissecting that myth. The line on men has been that they’re the only gender qualified to hold important jobs and too incompetent to be responsible for their conduct.

(snip)

If you’ve noticed a tendency to treat girls — like the 14-year-old whom now-Senate candidate Roy Moore allegedly picked up at her custody hearing — as knowing adults and men in their 30s — like Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos and Donald Trump, Jr. — as erring youngsters, large sons and “coffee boys,” this is why. Our culture makes that script available.

Yes, I do give Ben credit for saying that per your article. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard but honestly it would be hard for me to talk if a friend was nominated for SCOTUS and I knew that friends strengths and weaknesses and then later that same friend was accused of what Kavanaugh has been. I don’t think Ben Wittes is a bad guy but I do think he was blinded by his frienship with Kavanaugh in his defense of him regarding the perjury and partisanship. Wittes has to his credit not dismissed but rather as you say that Kavanaugh should withdraw his nomination.

I can’t imagine the pain of someone I love liek a brother, sibling, or whatever running for office and being so fundamentally wrong for it and having to resort to cutting an ad for his opponent but the Gosar siblings from what I know about him made a comendible decision.

It kind of looks like he didn’t finish reading the tweet. If you had only written “Republicans are going to be vicious, cruel and misogynistic to Prof. Ford because they can’t help themselves, it’s who they are,” it kind of looks like you’re giving them a pass. You don’t in the rest of it, but I think that’s what stopped him. At times I really get tired of “it’s who they are, we just have to deal with it” and have fallen prey to wanting to respond to that: “no we don’t have to deal with this, they have to change.”

re: #357 Belafon

It kind of looks like he didn’t finish reading the tweet. If you had only written “Republicans are going to be vicious, cruel and misogynistic to Prof. Ford because they can’t help themselves, it’s who they are,” it kind of looks like you’re giving them a pass. You don’t in the rest of it, but I think that’s what stopped him. At times I really get tired of “it’s who they are, we just have to deal with it” and have fallen prey to wanting to respond to that: “no we don’t have to deal with this, they have to change.”

They need to change. And another thing I don’t like hearing is “We should have just let the South secede anyhow.”

My point was that even in a situation like this where it would politically benefit Republicans to at least try to conceal their inner cavemen, they won’t be able to stop themselves from revealing their true vicious, cruel and misogynistic natures.

I totally agree.

Not to go all Psychobabble, but one thing I learned in therapy is that you can’t make someone else change, especially if they see no reason to.

We had a couple ‘teachable moments’ over the past few decades, where there was a brief period of uncertainty on the Right, that maybe some of the things they believed weren’t actually true. In each case, something happened that allowed them to slip back into certainty again.

Take for example the 2008-2009 financial crisis. For a brief period, the Right was on the verge of understanding that the Free Market isn’t actually self-policing. Then some bright boy on the right wrote a column blaming the whole thing on a bill signed by Carter in the 1970s that required banks that took in deposits in poor, largely minority neighborhoods to make loans there, too. The claim was that banks were forced by this law to write mortgages to undeserving PoCs, and that’s why the banks failed.

It was the purest horseshit, because almost none of the banks that wrote the bad loans were affected by that law. But it allowed the Right to fix blame on government and black and brown people, getting loans they shouldn’t have, and the poor banks having no choice but to write bad mortgages. Self-examination around the lack of self-policing by the Free Market stopped in its tracks.

Or take the GOP’s ‘post mortem’ after the 2012 loss, that they needed to appeal to somebody other than uneducated white men. That lasted only a short time. In 2014, the GOP consolidated its hold on the Congress, and in 2016, there were enough angry white men to elect Donald Trump.

So, the GOP SHOULD change, but they don’t want to, and we can’t make them. The only thing we can do is deal with it, in this case by shining a light on who they really are, and getting out and fucking VOTING!!! We do that, we can reduce the GOP to a smoking crater.

re: #345 HappyWarrior

Thanks guys for listening to my story. I was just so taken aback by all that and honestly a little shaken. I’ll be back canvassing next week though.

Canvass: carry on, wayward son.
