Axios and the New York Times Retract Reports That Rod Rosenstein Was Fired, or Resigned, or Whatever

Politics • Views: 31,011

So this morning the news broke that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had been fired, or resigned, or something like that. In any case, he was out. This caused a huge uproar on social media, of course, because this is the current bright red line for Donald Trump.

Here’s what the original Axios article looked like.

The New York Times promptly reported the same thing.

And they both got played by their “anonymous sources.” Again.

Here’s the current story at Axios: Rod Rosenstein offered to resign.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has verbally “offered to resign” in discussions with White House Chief of Staff Kelly, according to a source close to Rosenstein, but as of now, it’s unclear whether his resignation has been accepted.

Background: Rosenstein talked last year about invoking the 25th Amendment and wearing a wire during Trump meetings, the N.Y. Times’ Adam Goldman and Michael S. Schmidt reported last week. He denied both allegations.

Clarification: This article and headline have been updated to add that it’s unclear whether the resignation offer has been accepted.

“Unclear” is such a flexible word. Covers a multitude of sins.

UPDATE at 9/24/18 1:36:03 pm by Charles Johnson

Yep, they got played, all right.

It’s live by the source/die by the source these days, but the problem is that the journalists seem to be failing to grasp that the story is that a source told them “X happened”, not that X happened.

So, in this case, the story is, “A source close to Rosenstein claimed that he’d offered his resignation verbally, but subsequent events call that into question.”

Reportedly:

Actually:

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said, ‘Sure, I’l resign, but when I do, the man at the top is going down.’ It is unclear how seriously his offer is being considered.

It was only LAST SUNDAY that Jake Tapper jokingly tweeted “At least it’s Friday”, because it felt like a whole normal week of news had come out in one day.

This feels like a whole Trumpian week of news has come out in one day, which is like 7 x 7 days, or 49 normal days worth of news.

And the funny thing is, we’re really back where we started Sunday morning. Kavanaugh still likely to be confirmed, Rosenstein still deputy AG.

Beltway media really distinguished themselves this morning (and indeed all weekend).

They’ve done such a bang up job.

The reality is that the NYT carried Trump’s agenda better than Trump inner circle could have imagined - almost giving Trump the ability to sack Rosenstein on bogus accounting of what was likely a sarcastic joke.

Axios then trumped the Times when they claimed Rosenstein was resigning ahead of Trump firing him.

Again, Trump was hoping to get media buy-in, all while the main consumer of these stories was Trump himself, who would then use this to 1) attack the media; 2) attack Rosenstein; and 3) shut down Mueller.

At same time, it gives Trumpworld ability to deflect attention from the Kavanaugh mess.

I think he thinks he has a credible third accuser. I also think his tweets last night were so incredibly goddamned salacious and over the top that absent the immediate presentation of witness statement and corroborating evidence they border on professional misconduct and libel. People under investigation do not dictate how investigators operate.

It doesn’t matter who is under investigation. It’s a central tenet of the rule of law.

Trump is under legitimate investigation for federal felonies (note the plural). Trump’s already engaged in actions that are high crimes. His cronies and campaign team is a laundry list of people who have already cut plea deals and Mueller’s got Cohen, Manafort, Flynn, Papadopoulos, and Gates all talking.

And the ones they’re talking about: it can only be Trump, his spawn, spawn in-law, and Pence.

That was pretty much what these folk were pretty much saying- at that time, during the narrow time window I was describing.

This is the problem I have with this “11th dimensional chess” narrative: it immediately assumes the subject of the narrative is smarter than you are. And so it appeals to people who think that their leaders are smarter than they think they are.

As if: there’s this immediate assumption of hitherto unannounced or undemonstrated brilliance of the part of the subject that’s just patiently waiting around the corner, that they will suddenly spring out and ambush you- the critic of that person- when you least expect. This person, who you, and, basically, everyone, thought, was a bloody idiot, will suddenly reveal himself (it’s usually a he.) to be the EXACT OPPOSITE- AT THE VERY LAST SECOND. Good.

It’s a shame Garrison wasn’t born in the Twenties in Germany. He would have thrived during Hitler’s reign.

As much as Nazi Germany was terrible for the world, their designers and artists that did war propaganda like posters and the like were good designers and artists.

Garrison would never have been allowed near them. He’s too over the top and his stuff is just too raw. Garrison does not know both when to stop and how to be subtle, even if the message is not.

He just plain sucks. Which is probably why he does what he does. He found his niche.

People have said Trump liked Kavanaugh above all the other Federalist Society Stepford Judges because he’s shown the most sympathy for Executive Privilege - or at least, when a Republican is President.

But one comment Trump made a couple times makes me wonder. He keeps saying Kavanaugh is “Central Casting”. It’s like he’s thinking solely about his physical appearance and demeanor, not anything deeper than aesthetics. And there have been numerous instances of this, like Bolton not getting the National Security Adviser job initially, because of the moustache.

Or that everything is about appearances - and Kavanaugh was not his first choice so he’s not tied to him nearly as much as Trump is.

Experienced Republican hacks wouldn’t have nominated him to begin with. They would have been content to keep him on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

Hell, a truely experienced Republican hack would have appointed someone who wasn’t so adamant about overturning Roe, so that when they ended up casting a vote to uphold it, they could run on overturning it for another generation - or at least until support for overturning it died off to a significant degree.

I’ll even go further and say that the common factor both times is Mark Judge, which could be explained by his being one of those fuckheads who eggs their drunk friends on into doing stupid things that they would never consider while sober.

Not excusing the behavior, just trying to rationalize it based upon what we’ve heard so far.

Since we’re on the subject of skeeviness, this story is rather interesting:

“You are entitled to your opinion or position,” the edict said. “But you cannot remain a member in good standing while attacking the Church and its leaders and trying to get others to follow you.”

As a 65-year-old grandfather, Young has spent his life following Mormon cultural prescription. Born in rural Utah, he served as a church missionary in Guatemala and El Salvador, married in a church temple, and raised six Mormon daughters.

Yet recently, after discovering his daughters’ experiences with bishops as Mormon youth, he has become an unlikely activist in the #MeToo era.

Young is protesting what he feels is a “physically, emotionally, and spiritually” abusive practice within the church: “worthiness interviews,” in which members are asked a series of questions about their adherence to church rules, specifically its sexual code of conduct, alone in their bishop’s office.

I mean, I’m not entirely shocked to learn that this kind of stuff happens in the Mormon Church, but at the same time… just, ew.

While all bishops are required to ask whether members “obey the law of chastity,” abstaining from all premarital sexual activity, Young says more than 3,000 people, including four of his daughters, have said their bishops probed for the explicit details of their sexual conduct as children.

It’s always about sex, and usually in a prurient way.

Right, and I meant the same thing. None of this came up during the Bush Administration when he was up for a Court of Appeals job. But the difference between that appointment and this one is the difference between… I’m not even sure what.

Any decent Republican strategist/operative would have been able to find out about this stuff a head of time and advise to go with someone else. Hell, the GOP staffers on the Hill apparently knew before the news broke, so they’re not all morons.

As far as we know (which isn’t much, considering the lengths the SJC Republicans have gone to keep anything but the most favorable documentation about Brett Kavanaugh well under wraps), they probably DID “find out about this stuff” - but figured they’d just bull ahead and push Judge Brett through before anyone else found out - after which, they could dismiss it all as “political sour grapes” or whatever.
They obviously didn’t reckon that the Committee Democrats might be just as hardball players: too much soy, or whatevs…..

That’s been my working theory for a week now, that they learned of allegations and/or feared they existed and took steps to counter them. Which is why they’re so angry with Feinstein, that she “sat on” these allegations rather than coming forward sooner and through “proper channels,” which would have allowed them to bury them in the hearings rather than giving them proper attention.

Agree: except I think their anger with Diane Feinstein is more simply that they were (very well) played by a San Francisco Liberal Woman Democrat - who’s been in the Senate long enough to learn the game - to a tee- and wrongfoot the GOP Old Boys Club when it counted.

I don’t think Michael Avenatti should be running for president, but I don’t understand why people are being so skeptical of his claim to be representing a third Kavanaugh accuser. He’s delivered on some pretty big promises so far. Did he screw something up and I missed it? Because I think his claim of a third accuser is probably true.

That is a big problem I have with Brendan Nyhan on twitter. He continually dismiss Seth Abramson and Michael Avenatti as “fraudulent hucksters” based on something he simply does not specify.

I like a lot of his work…but academia still has a bit of a hubris problem.

My guess is that he was conflicted: told he’d go to hell for consummating outside of marriage but when drunk unable to stop his urges—thus the pawing at CBF and thinking shoving his dick in a woman’s face wasn’t sexual assault. Religion can do weird things that way. I’m sure he’s told himself over and over again that it wasn’t really wrong.

Assuming it would be the SG, there’s a question of whether he could oversee the investigation because he worked at Jones Day before becoming SG and Jones Day represented in the Trump campaign.

The current US Attorney for ED of VA is G Zachary Terwilliger, who was recommended by Kaine and Warner and confirmed via voice vote. He’s got experience in prosecuting organized crime cases.

But he was also popular with the ladies, ran with a hard-drinking crowd that tried to fuck anything that moved, and worked as a clerk for a judge who left office to stay ahead of criminal indictments for sexual harassment.

Amazing how that works…/////

He was a keel on those wayward ships…

re: #227 Blind Frog Belly White

Re Orrin Hatch and I really really really want to make clear I’m not going after Mormons here. I’m just saying that there might be reasons—bad reasons—but still reasons why Orrin Hatch is being such an asshat.

He is a member of the church formerly known as Mormon, which excommunicated a man, Sam Young, two weeks ago for trying to stop sexually explicit interviews of youth.

While all bishops are required to ask whether members “obey the law of chastity,” abstaining from all premarital sexual activity, Young says more than 3,000 people, including four of his daughters, have said their bishops probed for the explicit details of their sexual conduct as children.

The church now offers the opportunity for youth to be interviewed with an accompanying adult. But it has yet to condemn the practice of asking sexually explicit questions in interviews. Nor has it acknowledged the alleged trauma and, in some instances, predation that has resulted from them.

cnn.com

Orrin Hatch was a bishop once, and he might have asked teenage girls explicit questions (like “do you masturbate?” and worse) during those youth interviews. It is entirely possible that he views Dr. Blasey and Ms. Ramirez as unrepentant women trying to bring down a “good man.” But this is what Hatch comes out of, and, frankly, someone might ought to remind him that this is not a youth recommend interview and he doesn’t have carte blanche to pry before we get to Thursday.

Again, I am not trashing the people of the Mormon Church. I am just pointing out where Hatch comes from.

That Daily Beast article is terrifying. We have a rightwing, religio-political authoritarian government in the shadows waiting to take over and the GOP is all in.

“Leonard Leo was a visionary,” said Tom Carter, who served as Leo’s media relations director when he was chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast. “He figured out twenty years ago that conservatives had lost the culture war. Abortion, gay rights, contraception—conservatives didn’t have a chance if public opinion prevailed. So they needed to stack the courts.”

More than anything, it looks like Republicans “coming home.” In September 2017 Republican (and Republican leaning) approval of their party at 67%, now it’s up to 85%. There’s an election coming, so bandwagon fans getting on board for the playoffs.

More annoyingly, it’s Gallup so they only give top lines, so you can’t see what the sample looks like or how they define “leaners.”

This whole process is just so fundamentally flawed.

Time to do a reset and start over.

Remember “serious vetting”? Remember how it was going to be the best vetting ever?

There was no vetting. Drumpf just picked the name at the top of the Federalist list and said, “Confirm him.” His team did no vetting whatsoever. It’s just been a joke and a Keystone Kops Kluster FucK from the beginning.

Lying to Congress in previous Judiciary reviews, mysterious $200,000 debts that magically disappeared, attempted rape accusations, membership in a Yale organization called “Tit and Clit”, and hidden records from the Bush Admin that probably have “Torture” written all over them.

This nom has been a disaster from Day One. Shut it down. Try again.

The problem is that self declared “Republicans” are shrinking, as a share of the electorate.

Yet pollsters like Gallup will try to find a so-called representative sample based on old demographic data.

IOW, Gallup is looking for a poll-pool that is around 40-45% “Republican”, but that is likely significantly oversampling today’s Republican party wrt the rest of the electorate.

As I tried to show with the San Diego registration figures, the Republican party is now heading to at most a third of the electorate.

You’re probably right about the remaining Republicans become more servile to the orthodoxy of the leaders, and more willing to approve of their leaders.

San Diego county statistics:
In April 2000, Republicans accounted for 41.5% of those registered to vote.

Currently their share is 28.5% .

That is a significant drop

And San Diego used to be considered a Republican county - they were the largest party by far. Pete Wilson etc.

So when pollsters through up all those approval numbers, ask yourself if the pollsters truly are sampling America.

Yes, they do some good work.

And other times they just get used.

Yeah, it’s like I said - they need to report this more clearly as “People are telling us this”, rather than “This is what’s happening”.

BUT, there are points to consider. The time when RR was supposedly talking about the 25th Amendment, he’d JUST fired Comey and bragged about it to the Russian Ambassador and Foreign Minister in the Oval Office, saying it would take pressure off him. It was a crazy time, and even people disinclined to think of Trump as the Russian asset he clearly is were shocked by it.

Second, we all assume that Rosenstein wants Trump gone, but we have no way of knowing that. He may believe that a full investigation by Mueller is the only way to clear Trump’s name. Or not. Remember, he’s a Republican.

Third, that hit last Friday from whoever leaked to the NYT was pretty severe, for someone who ‘serves at the pleasure of the President’.

Fourth, SOMEBODY is saying this shit. It’s POSSIBLE it’s a concerted effort by the WH, but what evidence is there that those losers are even CAPABLE of any kind of concerted effort? It could be ONE PERSON who thinks getting rid of Rosenstein will make it possible for Trump to survive, no matter what anyone else thinks. The place is like Game of Thrones, but without dragons or titties - just the intrigue and backstabbery.

I went to a large university with a big Greek system and it took something *spectacular* to get that kind of attention. Just waving your penis in the face of a female student at a party wouldn’t do it. No, it took something like “stealing the Terminix bug to get out of all the pledge stuff,” “getting drunk, falling off Mount Bonnell and dying” or (the never in the news but everyone knew about it) “sexual assault of a freshman who was not even pledging a fraternity by several frat brothers.” (Basically, the kid was kidnapped off the sidewalk, dragged into the *** house and sexually assaulted.) This was a few years before Kavanaugh went to Yale, seriously, dude, the story of you drunkenly waving your weiner in a woman’s face wouldn’t have been around campus, especially if you were already a known party animal.

EVANSTON, Ohio (WKRC) - A car exploded and caught fire in Evanston Monday. Police believe a propane tank may be the cause.

Surveillance video caught the moment the car suddenly exploded. This happened on Woodburn Avenue near Hewitt Avenue at about 1 p.m.

A woman in the car was hurt and taken to the hospital. There’s no word on her condition and her name has not been released.

Well, he said “fair process” seventeen times in that interview (he repeats himself much as the yam does.) And after all, in high school he was “studying or focused on sports and being a good friend to the boys and the girls that I was friends with”—he tells that little tale four different times— and he said he’d never assaulted anyone five different ways, so you gotta believe him:

I had never sexually assaulted anyone, not in high school, not ever.
But what I know is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone in high school or at any time in my life
I have never sexually assaulted anyone.
I’ve never done any such thing, known about any such thing.
I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone.

What. An. Asshole.

A possible fourth person has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, Maryland law enforcement officials told a Maryland newspaper.

An anonymous witness told Montgomery County investigators over the weekend about another incident that occurred while Kavanaugh was in high school, according to a Monday report in the Montgomery County Sentinel.

In a response to this report, The Montgomery County Police Department put out a statement that said it had not received a request from an alleged victim to start a criminal investigation — though it’s unclear if the witness from the Sentinel’s report is an alleged victim.
