The Democrats will each have only 5 minutes each to ask their questions with no possibility of followup. This structure is designed to showcase the Republican argument supporting Kavanaugh and, in effect, silence the Democratic position which will be too fragmented to be effective.
Maybe we will be fortunate and Kavanaugh will be forced to withdraw before Thursday’s circus.

Trump’s clown show continues with rave reviews from Trumpworld and the Fox agitprop experts, and no one else.
His claims about sovereignty and globalism went over like a lead balloon at the UN, but that wasn’t his intended audience.
It was his reactionary/regressive know nothing GOP base that laps up everything he says no matter how insane or factually wrong he is.
China benefits from Trump’s trade wars. Russia benefits from the US screwing our allies and trading partners. Russia benefits from a weaker EU and UK thanks to the Brexit bulkshit.
Kavanaugh is an awful nominee, and had Trump done a proper vetting, they would have known this was the likely outcome. Either they didn’t know and don’t care, or they knew, and don’t care. Either way, they want Kavanaugh because they like his approach to executive power and all the rest that comes with being a right wing extremist.
Everyone else, especially women, minorities, workers, and the environment, will suffer for it.

And there are still more scandals coming out - not just about Kavanaugh, but about DHS. Turns out that they did have a forcible separation policy that Trumpworld put in place, which means DHS Nielsen and John Kelly are on the hook - especially Nielsen for lying to Congress.
Not that the GOP controlled Congress will do anything about any of this. They know two things- their base wont like it, and that Trump can’t find anyone else to fill those positions. With midterms just over a month away, they are potentially screwed in so many ways, but can always fall back on knowing that a plurality of Americans don’t vote and that their vote suppression and gerrymandering efforts have paid dividends.
Even McConnell is more than willing to trade control of Congress for packing and stacking the courts with right wing extremists who will tear down the safety net and gut civil/voting rights while rolling back Roe and Griswold.
McConnell see the courts as the ultimate prize, and has gamed things to the GOP’s benefit - and the nation’s detriment.

I have been reading Robert Sapolsky’s book “Behave” and in it he addresses aspects of the Prisoners Dilemma from game theory. I know that many say it is important that we not be like the Republicans, that we must be “better than them”. But the Prisoners Dilemma illustrates that until the non-cooperating party is hammered back, they will continue to refuse to cooperate. In human behavior, this is the regrettable reality— if we ever want to return to some level of normal cooperation and compromise, when the Democrats retake power (most likely 2020), they need to show in no uncertain terms that there will always be a price to pay for a power grab. The other side will understand nothing less, and anything less will not have the necessary effect. The Republicans have shown that they care nothing for public opinion, Democrats need to have the same resolve to return our democracy to functionality. Pack the court, prosecute all Republican offenses fully, hold effective fast hearings that report the full depravity, levy taxes on the wealthy to pay down the deficit, push through Medicare for All. And when the media criticize, ignore them. When the Republicans scream tyranny, double down. I wish I did not have to advocate for this, but science informs me that this is true. We are not doing this for revenge, but for the re-establishment of a functioning democracy.

Which, as we can plainly see by what’s happening all around us, is the dumbest advice ever. America’s trashy, shallow, reality-tv-driven culture rewards bad behavior and perceives good behavior as wimpy, weak, and ineffective.
To my mind, there are only two things GOPers do that Dems shouldn’t:
1) Lie (what even is the point, when the truth is our greatest weapon?)
2) Cause unnecessary/avoidable harm to innocent third parties

I have been reading Robert Sapolsky’s book “Behave” and in it he addresses aspects of the Prisoners Dilemma from game theory. I know that many say it is important that we not be like the Republicans, that we must be “better than them”. But the Prisoners Dilemma illustrates that until the non-cooperating party is hammered back, they will continue to refuse to cooperate. In human behavior, this is the regrettable reality— if we ever want to return to some level of normal cooperation and compromise, when the Democrats retake power (most likely 2020), they need to show in no uncertain terms that there will always be a price to pay for a power grab. The other side will understand nothing less, and anything less will not have the necessary effect. The Republicans have shown that they care nothing for public opinion, Democrats need to have the same resolve to return our democracy to functionality. Pack the court, prosecute all Republican offenses fully, hold effective fast hearings that report the full depravity, levy taxes on the wealthy to pay down the deficit, push through Medicare for All. And when the media criticize, ignore them. When the Republicans scream tyranny, double down. I wish I did not have to advocate for this, but science informs me that this is true. We are not doing this for revenge, but for the re-establishment of a functioning democracy.

I haven’t read Sapolsky but have read other articles about the Prisoners Dilemma. It’s a fun game but its relationship to situations outside of the original premise are limited:
1. It’s strictly mathematical — no reward for being honest or punishment for doing harm. Just 2 actions each party can take with the identical matrix of payoffs; i.e. if A does Y and B does Z the results for A are the same as would be true for B if A did Z and B did Y
2. The payoffs are structured in such a way to encourage certain behaviors if parties engage repeatedly with each other. Different structures would lead to different results.
The whole premise is divorced from honesty, ethics, kindness, or the law. It assumes that both participants are in the same situation and respond to the same incentives. That is clearly not true in our current political world.

I haven’t read Sapolsky but have read other articles about the Prisoners Dilemma. It’s a fun game but its relationship to situations outside of the original premise are limited:
1. It’s strictly mathematical — no reward for being honest or punishment for doing harm. Just 2 actions each party can take with the identical matrix of payoffs; i.e. if A does Y and B does Z the results for A are the same as would be true for B if A did Z and B did Y
2. The payoffs are structured in such a way to encourage certain behaviors if parties engage repeatedly with each other. Different structures would lead to different results.The whole premise is divorced from honesty, ethics, kindness, or the law. It assumes that both participants are in the same situation and respond to the same incentives. That is clearly not true in our current political world.
In the version I’ve read, there are rewards for being honest, and it’s exactly the type of thing that Meuller has been using. The people turning on Trump have been rewarded with smaller sentences than those that haven’t. There’s a possibility that if they’d all kept their mouth shut, they might have been pardoned when the time came, but now that one is talking, I bet that’s falling apart.

I wish I could be so sure: the Judiciary Committee is still committed to having Christine Ford testify tomorrow (and Kavanaugh) - unless BK bails today, that’s still going to be on. Also, I’m not sure the Senate Republicans aren’t just going to say “fuck it”, and try to ram the nomination through by any means necessary. They have GOT to all be thoroughly steamed over this whole mess: they’ve been seriously played by Feinstein and the other Democrats, and they have been backed into a corner where (outside of K withdrawing) there is no positive outcome for them.
