Been very busy these last several hours, either working or sleeping, and holy shit I watched the press conference, and WTF was all that about it?

Also, the UN speech. It was like watching one of my least prepared students trying to mumble his way through an oral presentation.

And now, back to work.

The exuberant Pacifica Quartet joins forces with German composer and clarinetist Jörg Widmann for a program featuring Haydn’s Quartet in G major, op. 76, no. 1; Widmann’s String Quartet no. 3 (“Jagdquartett”); and Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat major, op. 34.

i just have to come to terms with the fact that millions of people can’t tell how utterly moronic this sounds

“From what I hear, if you look at Mr. Pillsbury, the leading authority on China … he was saying that China has total respect for Donald Trump and for Donald Trump’s very, very large brain. He said, Donald Trump, they don’t know what to do,” Trump said.

re: #22 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

i just have to come to terms with the fact that millions of people can’t tell how utterly moronic this sounds

“From what I hear, if you look at Mr. Pillsbury, the leading authority on China … he was saying that China has total respect for Donald Trump and for Donald Trump’s very, very large brain. He said, Donald Trump, they don’t know what to do,” Trump said.

Pillsbury is a “China expert,” with years of service in DC and elsewhere. He’s 73, and knows his way around. But not everyone is enamored of him. I found this critique of his scholarship cited in his Wikipedia entry.
web.archive.org

While Pillsbury has achieved prominence within the Defense Secretary’s office, many defense experts within the military, government agencies, and universities reject his scholarship as tendentious at best, and their professional distaste is heightened by personal dislike. “Brilliant” and “charming” are words frequently used by acquaintances to describe Pillsbury, but so are “combative,” “conspiratorial,” and “ruthless.” His career has been one of numerous short-lived jobs, at least three dismissals, and a revoked security clearance.

x—snip—x

On this spectrum of opinion, Pillsbury dwells on the far-hawkish end. Where others view China’s intentions as complicated, Pillsbury says that Beijing views the United States as an “inevitable foe.” (“He makes simple what is not simple,” says Mark Pratt, a former State Department official who has known Pillsbury for over 30 years.) Where others debate the merits of hedging, Pillsbury feels that things haven’t gone far enough. “The U.S. can do much more to hedge in the next few years if the Chinese do not end their excessive military secrecy and begin to reassure their neighbors,” he recently told The Wall Street Journal. And where nearly everyone agrees that China is far behind the United States in military capacity, Pillsbury has been among the first, and the few, to argue that Beijing is preparing for an asymmetric military conflict with the United States in which it would draw on secret “assassin’s mace” weapons. The term “assassin’s mace,” more commonly translated as “trump card” (shashoujian) is, according to Pillsbury, integral to a Chinese notion of “inferior defeats superior.” (The Pentagon’s most recent annual report to Congress on China’s military from May 2006 includes the term, mentioning Chinese efforts to exploit “perceived vulnerabilities of potential opponents—so-called Assassin’s Mace [sha shou jian] programs.”) An “assassin’s mace” might take the form of a computer application, for instance, that would take over an enemy information system, rendering a foe the victim of his own dependence on technology. In Pillsbury’s telling, China intends to leapfrog ahead in battle readiness by using assassin’s-mace weapons to find breaches in U.S. armor. Moreover, he implies, they could be ready at any time.

x—snip—x

But the true difference between most experts and Michael Pillsbury appears to lie somewhere else: namely, in the scholarship. With the exception of Chinese Views of Future Warfare, which is a straightforward compilation of translated essays, Pillsbury’s work over the past decade has become increasingly speculative and dubious. In particular, a close examination of his writings reveals a troubling approach to evidence and primary sources.

A case in point is Pillsbury’s paper “China’s Military Strategy Toward the U.S.: A View from Open Sources” from November of 2001. The piece names numerous Chinese military writings, including an article entitled “Twenty-first Century Naval Warfare” by Naval Captain Shen Zhongchang, Naval Lieutenant Commander Zhang Haiying, and Naval Lieutenant Zhou Xinsheng of the Chinese Navy Research Institute. According to Pillsbury, the article is written to show “how China could adopt several asymmetrical approaches to defeating a larger and more powerful navy,” and one of them “will be for China to attack American naval command and information systems.” (Underlined boldface Pillsbury’s.)

But Pillsbury’s footnotes lead to an essay that never discusses how China fits into future naval warfare, much less any sort of hypothetical attack on the United States. (The essay even appears in Pillsbury’s 1997 book, translated into English.)

The article also suggests that his career has been an example of “failing upward,” as he tended not to stay long at any one post, but still managing to find a nominally better job. Also, his translations from Mandarin is shaky at best. And he took some liberty in stating he was an heir to the Pillsbury flour fortune, when in fact he’s from another branch of the same family.

IOW, just the kind of person Trump would like, and who would like Trump back.

To be fair, oil was over $100 a gallon a decade ago, and the prime rate is still low by historical standards, especially considering how low the unemployment rate is. Now the tariffs are another story, hitting farmers and consumers in the pocketbook for no good reason.

I was speaking with other teachers at school about this, and had a another teacher say how she didn’t believe Dr. Fords accusation, and that is was a false claim; he’s innocent.

Made me think; I teach at a Catholic School- our societies reaction/response to Sexual Assault is not much different than how we used to react to Catholic Priests and Cardinals and the scandals wherein.

For years, for decades- legitimate accusations have been downgraded and dismissed; to the point where they were treated as illegitimate. Those survivors became the victims, and a problem became baked into the system. This systemic problem didn’t just push down legitimate accusations, it equated them with false accusations. In a system such as this, it allows for accusations against the innocent to be treated with accusations of the guilty. If one truly believed that Kav were innocent, they need to critique the system, and want a vigorous investigation to separate legitimate from illegitimate accusations. There are some Catholic Priests that have been accused and moved by Cardinals that are probably innocent- but they are victims of the same system that ignored the legitimate accusers who were ignored.

re: #84 Big Beautiful Door

But the sex harassment charges are the only way to stop Kavanaugh. Collins is absolutely determined to believe Kavanaugh will vote to protect Roe, and the other GOP Senators will vote for him because they know he will vote to gut Roe.

The GOP knows that they will lose votes either way; if they back down they will lose face and support among their base, if they vote for him they will lose voters from the non-base moderate voters.

I suspect that they will just damn the torpedoes, swallow the vomit rising in their throats and vote him in to get their conservative majority on the Court and take their chances with Congress, they can always recover any seats they might lose, but once Kavanaugh is on the Court, he is there for decades to come.

I don’t think I’ll be able to stomach the #KavanaughHearings hashtags due to the inevitable bots/sick little trumpchump trolls. Who would you all recommend as a good account to follow for live-tweeting the hearings? (like, the equivalent of what the unsinkable Daniel Dale does for Cheeto Benito rallies?)

re: #81 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

That is the part of the discussion that is being neglected right now. Instead it is turning into a he-said-she-said argument that is just going to chase its tail right down the rat hole.

I don’t think it’s fair to simplify it to that when Ford has definitely been impacted and hasn’t shown any signs of taking liberties with the truth like Kavanaugh. And I think that is the underlining argument that the Senate Dems have is that “This is a man who doesn’t even respect women’s choices and agency in his personal life, so why on earth should we let him decide on our Constitutional rights?”

Ditto that especially since I have a couple work projects today.

The hard part about that is how do you codify it. The point of the EC was to keep Trump’s out of office, but it’s what got him into it. I would pass a law requiring at least the last 14 years of your tax returns.

I agree, which is why I believe the Democrats must add two seats to SCOTUS when they regain power, hopefullly in 2021.

We need to add a bunch of new seats to the House of Representatives, which will dilute the voting power of small rural states because big states will get a lot more new congressional districts, and thereby also a lot more electoral votes. I’d increase it to 1,000 seats.

I agree with that strongly in principle but what’s going to stop the GOP from adding two more if they inevitably get the Presidency back down the road. Don’t get me wrong. I like the idea and I’m more for it than against it since we haven’t adjusted SCOTUS or the size of Congress in years.

Two won’t be enough. Oh, I believe this out of control activist Republican court needs the House of Lords treatment that Asquith, Lloyd George and Churchill threatened—they extracted a promise from the King to pack the House of Lords with 500 Liberal peers to outvote the Tories.

Expand the court not just to 11. Expand it to 21 and pack it with women and then to make those five asshole conservatives even more miserable, include a couple gay, lesbian, Muslim, Hindus and others in the mix!

Britain is much smaller than we are population wise yet there are 650 members of the House of Commons. I agree with this. And what’s more is I think it could allow other parties to grow.

I like the idea of tying it to the number of judicial districts.

I do too rather than an arbitrary “Let’s increase the size of the court” which would come off as solely politically motivated.

We also make it more difficult for the GOP to regain power as a strictly white nationalist party by granting statehood to D.C., P.R. and maybe the Pacific Islands, and also increase the size of the House to reduce the voting power of small states. All of which can be done without amending the Constitution, which is so difficult its almost impossible.

I got to see Mr. Price in person back in the late 60s when he was marketing his incredible Chocolate Chunk Cookies. They were only sold in Gimbels Department Stores. He was in the store cooking up a batch. He had us laughing as he was making a batch of his cookies. And when you got to taste them…utter decadance…Especially the ones where he added crushed Brazil, Cashews, Almonds and Walnuts…like eating a cookie version of a Chunky Bar!

Yeah there’s only been on Amendment passed in my lifetime and it was something that started in the nation’s founding. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but I do agree with your idea.

It will be difficult enough to just add two, which the entire mainstream media will oppose as illegitimate “court packing”, ignoring the illegitimate way the GOP stole Garland’s seat on the Supreme Court, not to mention the White House by accepting help from Russian Intelligence.

Yep, the GOP disguises its true intent with rationalizations all the time, like demanding voter ID to prevent nonexistent voter fraud when they actually just want to disenfranchise voters.

Vincent Price later said, in retrospect, that was one of his favorite performances. I’d agree; it’s a brutal film (maybe not by today’s standards) and he didn’t ham it up - he came across as deadly serious.

Loved his performance in Edward Scissorhands, which was maybe his last film, at least as best I recall.

Here is your hint: the last tick mark on the x axis is 2018
