Dr. Christine Blasey Ford Concludes Her Testimony; What Did You Think?

Politics • Views: 31,255

Well, that was grueling for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, and the Republican Party was predictably craven, and even some of the usual GOP apologists on Twitter are forced to acknowledge that it was an unmitigated disaster. The decision to have Rachel Mitchell, an associate of convicted felon Joe Arpaio, do the questioning for the cowardly Republican Senators ended up backfiring spectacularly.

The GOP tried mightily to stack this hearing against Dr. Ford, using every scheming trick they could think of, and she burned it all down. She’s a hero.

Lindsey Graham is ranting now.

I think the GOP counted on being able to intimidate her and make her seem like a crackpot.

I think they failed badly.

In a normal situation, I think Kavanaugh’s nomination would be dead, but we’re not in a normal situation, and I think the GOP will keep pushing ahead.

Sullivan opened my eyes to Graham being terrible a long time ago. I just wish I could find the post where he first called him Senator Butters.

My reaction is not to the hearing itself, but to the reaction I’m seeing from GOPers, that they believe she’s telling the truth AS SHE SEES IT, but that without corroborating evidence, should it be enough to derail a SCOTUS nomination?

This is a crazy take. They believe her, in the sense that they don’t think she made it up, that she really did suffer this attack. They even believe that Kavanaugh did it. They’re grasping for reasons why it shouldn’t matter.

The best we can hope for is there are two somewhat decent Republican senators left that have seen all this and have decided “I do not want this asshole’s name linked with me.” Hell even if they decide to do it for totally political preservation motives, I’d take it because I don’t want that fucking asshole Kavanaugh on our Supreme Court ruling on our laws for the next quarter century.

I think Rachel Mitchell did the Republicans no favors up there. I can’t believe her close was to effectively blame Ford for the five minutes at a time public hearing format that the GOP set up when Ford has been demanding an FBI investigation. Everything about Mitchell’s performance was just optically awful, and worse, inept.

I didn’t watch. Kept track of the comments here, and watched a few media-based Twitter accounts.

Dr. Ford handed the Judiciary Republicans their asses. When the screaming heads on Fox can’t stop talking about how bad it was, you gotta conclude that this nomination is in real trouble.

Andrea Mitchell says McConnell is bluffing, that he doesn’t have the votes for confirmation.

I’m wondering if Trump panics and pulls the nomination at this point. He knows how bad this is looking, and he’ll want to wash his hands of it in a hurry.

I suspect Graham is a weak man who attaches himself to stronger men and follows their lead. When he was attached to McCain, he was mavericky like McCain. But then McCain died on him, and he attached himself to Trump, so now he’s all in for Trump.

BTW, given Trump’s reported mocking of Jeff Sessions for his Southern accent, I don’t see him replacing Sessions with Graham.

Hahahaa, I like Dad Bacon’s way with words, Joe. Whenever I see Oliver North on TV acting like he’s this fine American patriot, I think back to my Grandpa whom I’m named after who Ollie tried to shake hands with at a Slavic festival back in ‘94 and Grandpa could only respond with “Robb’s got ya.” Grandpa never made it as an officer like Ollie nor did he meet any Presidents but he didn’t lie before Congress to protect one either and while he was a lifelong gun owner, he never would have devalued safety to make a bunch of fringe loonies happy.

Maybe they couldn’t have have stage-managed every step of Prof. Ford’s appearance, but the Committee Democrats have played this like a Stradivarius: the Republicans have tried desperately to fix the optics of airing the accusations against Kavanaugh, and failed badly at almost every opportunity. Mainly by their own doing
All that’s left to them (IMO) is naked power-politics: forcing a floor vote, and having Leader McTurtle use every means (however vile) to get to 50 . Which (thankfully) he may not get.

As far as I’m concerned, the Garland block is one of the most shameful moments of the Senate’s history. Not as bad as Senator Sumner being attacked by a slavery supporting Congressman mind you but definitely something that needs to be the focus of the historiography of the Obama years and Mitch’s brag “I told the President that you will not get a Supreme Court justice” and then crying when Kavanaugh who got a fucking hearing being actually questioned and held accountable.

Honestly, I’m very interested in hearing what the voters I talk to say this weekend. We go after solid Dems obviously but we’re also going after people we think split their ticket last time, we have a Republican Congresswoman but Clinton won our district by 10% which btw despite all the claims about how awful she is was in fact better than Obama did both times. It’s the “quickly and abruptly” bit. Remember, not only the DNC was hacked by Russian-affiliated hackers, but the RNC was too. We haven’t seen any of the RNC’s emails, and based on “normal” Republican behavior these days, it’s probably going-to-prison level explosive. And Repub senators got very deferential after a round of golf with the yam.

So, Russia hacks the RNC, gets tons of horrible dirt. Hands it to Trump to blackmail Congressional goopers. Trump does this with abandon. So Congressional goopers are tied to Trump under threat of destruction, and Trump is tied to Putin under threat of destruction, because if and when this little scheme gets out that’s basically treason. I figure, inshallah when Dems win at least the House, some of these hearings are going to be very interesting.

Now we’re seeing stuff from Senators we didn’t realize were uneasy, like Kennedy. THIS THIS THIS. False optimism sets people up for disaster, but so too does unmitigated defeatism. Or as Sarah Kendzior says:

All it takes is 2 Republican Senators to say Kavanfuckingnoway. That’s why every election matters guys. That’s why Doug Jones’ win means something. That’s why even though you don’t like Manchin, HEidencamp, or any of hte othe conservative Dems, you hope they win because they’re far more likely to vote no on a shitty nominee like this than a Republican who would be doing what we’re seeing with Graham cracker.

re: #67 KGxvi

I think we’re starting to see some cracks in the facade. A couple of Republican Senators have said the vote should be delayed. Now we’re seeing stuff from Senators we didn’t realize were uneasy, like Kennedy. We’ve all been waiting for the dam to break, and maybe this turns into a Harriet Meirs situation where a lot of Republicans buck the president over a bad choice.

Kennedy is also the one at the end who was like “why didn’t democrats participate in” some phone call. Don’t give him any benefit of the doubt. It won’t happen.

75
lawhawk  Sep 27, 2018 • 12:00:47pm

Everything about this is a shitshow.

The GOP wants Kavanaugh so badly they’ll fuck things up to get him on the Court. They don’t care if it means losing Congress. They will have gotten the Supreme Court for a generation.

That’s what this is about - and they’re willing to go scorched earth to do it.

They blocked Obama’s pick to make this a possibility. Now they have the golden ring in their grasp and they’re going to say/do anything to achieve this gamed outcome.

The reality is that the GOP doesn’t care what was said today. They already made their decisions. We get the signaling from Graham, who’s a Trumpist at this point. He’s telling Trump what he wants to hear, and has been pushing this for a while now.

Collins and Murkowski are MIA at the moment, but have no doubt that McConnell is trying to twist their arms into going along with this travesty.

Same with Flake. The three of them claim to be open minded and above the fray, but they’re all about furthering the GOP agenda just as the rest of the GOP are.

Mavericks, they aren’t.

They’re all putting party over nation, and that’s the mo for the entire party at this point.

How soon before we get some right wing crackpot claiming that Dr. Ford saw a life model decoy of Kavanaugh, and that it wasn’t the real one?

They’re pushing these conspiracies so hard that I might have missed it though.

In the movie version of this, Kavanaugh would show up drunk to this hearing….

In the movie, he seems normal at first, then he grows belligerent and more apparent he’s drunk as the pressure gets on, and then he eventually admits it and says “I’m Brett Kavanaugh goddamn it, you can’t stop me” and then a Montgomery County police officer, preferably a woman of color says “Brett Kavanaugh, you’re under arrest for the rape of Chrsitine Blasey Ford, you have the right to remain silent, anything you do and say can be used against you in a court of law, you have a right to an attorney, if you cannot afford one, one will be provided to you.”

Possibly. Depends on Kavanaugh. I’m not sure what there is left that Kavanaugh can do, though. What’s his play to get out of this?

There is no play. If he fights he loses. The only way out is to say the assault happened but it wasn’t him. She was very sure it was him. She was too strong in her testimony.

Republican Senators voting against her…and that’s what it is now, a vote against her…will have no justification for it other than, “I believed him, not her.” And MAAANNNN, you don’t want to do that to women right now.

He needs to withdraw, say he’s doing it to spare his family the circus.

I predict he’ll DARVO as much as possible, hyping claims that he/his family have received threats (I doubt he has, and even if partially true, not nearly to the degree as Christine Blasey Ford). He’ll also drag his wife/daughters into it by pointing them out in the audience and boo-hoo-hoo about how “unfair” the process is.

If he’s even close to the man they claim him to be, that’s what he should do. And after all this, there’s no way he can be impartial on SCOTUS. He’ll carry around the same partisan vendetta that Thomas has.

He had a brief opportunity, when this first came out, to own up to the excessive drinking, and even the toxic male bonding rituals, to beg forgiveness and throw himself on the mercy of the court.

He chose total denial. Then, on Fox, he tried to pretend he was a choirboy.

He cut off all his lines of retreat. His only hope was that Ford come across as a liar.

Oops.

I mentioned the other day, the Pod Save America guys were suggesting that a rejection of Kavanaugh is better than a withdrawal. A rejection fires up the base to go after evil liberals and RINOs, a withdrawal means weak GOP leadership.

But I wonder if a rejection doesn’t kill the GOP base. After all this work, they still can’t get the votes.

re: #59 ericblair

Weren’t the hacked DNC emails pretty benign — just some inside the Beltway nonsense and Bernie-is-not-the-Messiah notes? Nothing criminal, only perhaps a little embarrassing?

Of course, it is possible that the Russian also have truly terrible DNC emails that they continue to hold to blackmail Dems when they return to power.

Yes, the DNC ones were pretty benign, because they’re Democrats. If there were criminal ones in there, they’d have been on page A1 of the NYT for months. Whatever was the least bit incriminating is old news now.

I don’t expect the same out of the RNC.

It’s a funny thing…now that Dr. Ford has testified and been believed a weight has lifted off my shoulders I’ve carried for the past 3 years. And the 20 years before that.

I can turn it off now. Whatever happens with Kavanaugh’s testimony doesn’t matter to me. Dr. Ford’s did. And it doesn’t even matter that people do or do not believe her, I can’t control that. What matters is she went up in front of the country, would not be silent, and told her story.

Let the rest fall however it will.
