Look what’s happened to his public image in the last week. (I know it seems like a year—the next week is going to be even longer!) And that’s without the FBI getting involved. The Swetnick story will come out over the weekend.

Yeah I’m not at all hopeful. This is really just a cynical tactic intended to put some time and mental distance between the stark contrast between Ford’s imminently believable testimony vs Kavanaugh’s absolutely atrocious tantrum, and the final vote. The FBI has to dig in hard if they’re going to stop him, and to my mind the best way to do that is to somehow get and release some purposefully hidden documents from the National Archives unequivocally proving that he committed perjury.

I think you’re right. The only way Grassley/McConnell/Trump go along with this is if the whip count was <50. This next week is either about getting the vote count to 50 (I’ve no idea what number they’re at right now) or finding a new nominee. What I’d really love is for a Republican Senator to come out and say that Kavanaugh’s tirade yesterday was completely out of line for someone nominated to the Supreme Court and they are an absolute no vote. But that’s as likely as me winning the powerball without buying a ticket. Instead we will have to see how this whole thing plays out and whether Flake/Murkowski/Collins hold firm.

And if that was going to happen it already would have. Flake voted Kavanaugh out of committee then announced his fucking intention to vote for Kavanaugh on the floor and the only thing that seems to have stopped him was getting stuck in that elevator and absolutely RIPPED APART on national television by sexual assault survivors. So none of these assholes are covering themselves in glory here, and it’s pretty clear to me that they’re still looking for a way to vote yes and hope that the FBI gives it to them by issuing an equivocal report that tells them nothing new.

All I could find with a quick search was this Vox article:

Kavanaugh’s background check was completed before his September confirmation hearing, according to Judiciary Committee spokesperson Taylor Foy. One thing about the financial problems, is on the financial disclosure forms they only need to disclose a range. I believe they disclosed debts between $60,000 and $200000. That’s a pretty big range and I am not sure how it became a fact that he owed $200000.

It seems to me that Kavanaugh is increasingly vulnerable. The extra week allows more issues to come out. And more people an opportunity to their swing at this fiasco of a pinata. Don’t know if that will be enough to end his nomination, though.

I suspect that Kavanaugh’s tantrum at the end of the Thursday hearing and his complete disrespect of several senators, particularly Senator Klobuchor may have cost him support in the Senate. Above and beyond the lying, perjury, alcoholism, misogyny, financial corruption, crass partisanship, and sexual assault charges.

And Senator Flake realized that he was going to be continually accosted by people protesting that this unpopular nominee was being shoved down their throats. If Flake has any national pretensions, he needed to find a way to end that.

Cruz, McConnell and Nielsen already found out that people in this democracy will register their disagreement at authoritarians not “ramming things through”.

I also suspect that Kavanaugh’s behavior has also allowed Democratic Senators from Red states a lot more freedom to oppose his nomination.

Oh, I reported yesterday that Jeff Flake was supposed to speak on a panel about the future of the GOP at a Forbes 30 under 30 event in Boston. Well, the venue for the speech/discussion, Emerson College’s Colonial Theatre, basically told the organizers of the Forbes event that it wasn’t allowing its site to be used for the speech due to public safety concerns.

It now looks like the panel will be moved into a tent at Boston’s City Hall Plaza but I don’t know how that will work out. If anything, the location will likely be ringed with cops and protesters. Flake deserves it. He has presidential aspirations and they need to be brutally squashed.

One of the reasons Republicans punch above their weight, one of the main reasons is their ability to tightly focus. Democrats don’t do that — Democrats want to cover ALL the issues, EVERY problem, and it dilutes their effectiveness.

There’s a pause in the action, and finally I feel like the lying and sneering disrespect in Thursday’s hearing is getting some traction. I don’t think this is the case. Imagine flipping the roles here; if the Dems tried to hammer Trump’s suboptimal email management for months on end, nobody would have bit. Because nobody fucking cares about email management except sysadmins, and if you ask most email users not even then. If Clinton had had a serious verifiable scandal every few days she’d have been hounded off the stage within a week, and most of the media would be on Clinton Arrest Watch within days.

Trump’s campaign was able to make so much of a bullshit non-scandal and a beaten-to-death minor scandal because the entire system was wired, from the money men to the misogynist media bosses to the psychological war by a hostile foreign power, to hammer anything into the brains of the US consumer to hurt Clinton. The actual topic was meaningless.

I was a somewhat of a fan of Andrew’s during the Obama years, after he confessed how he was wrong about the Iraq invasion. But it was clear even then that he had issues with women (including a pathological contempt for Hillary) and some issues with minorities (his endorsement of the Bell Curve). His current reaction is shocking to me, because I thought he was better than this, but then he always did describe himself as a conservative and a devout Catholic, and given his heritage, I guess it’s not surprising that he would support a man with an elitist Jesuit prep school background.

But you may be mistaken thinking most Americans both will bother or have the capacity to sift through it all in one big batch.

What did they settle on? Her Emails and MAGA!

Because this has been “Sexual Assault Week”, I’ve been reading a lot of good pieces from women on that and related stuff. This is a good piece in Daily Beast talking about boys’ humiliation of girls, even in grade school years, and the cumulative effect.

This, and the discussions of ‘performative masculinity’, where boys perform for other boys using girls as props, reminded me of things that happened when I was a kid. I don’t remember ever doing that shit, but boy, do I remember others doing it. It did tend to be the same guys over and over, and often they were also belligerent with me, an outsider, an oddball. Plus until 9th grade I was literally one of the smallest boys in my class (now 6’ - and when I grew to 5’10” in 10th grade, the bullying stopped).

One thing that keeps popping up was in Jr. High, when one of the shyer girls in our class got braces. One boy kept shouting at her, “Hey, TIN GRIN!”, and laughing to the other boys. Even at the time, I thought it was a dick move, but as I got older, and especially now, when I think about it I can only imagine how humiliating it must have been for her. Even though she must have heard, she didn’t overtly react. She didn’t give him the satisfaction of reacting.

The guy was an asshole all through school, but very popular, at least with the boys.

Of course Fischer and the rest of the family-shmamily Holy Haters are going to be pissed at the GOPers if Judge McRapey doesn’t make it to SCOTUS, but - barring some mass RW walkout/boycott of the midterm elections (and how likely, really is that?), the bulk of the offices up for contention are Governorships, State Lege seats, and the House of Representatives: none of whom, outside of voicing support/opposition have much to do with the Kavanaugh nomination. And of those officials who do (Senators), not too many of them are even up for reelection this time; and those who are are mainly Brett-bros anyway. Maybe depressed GOP turnout in places like AZ or TN or MO might sway results more “blue” than they might be - personally, I’m not so sure.

I think it’s more likely that Bryan Fischer’s fire-and-brimstone threats are simply going to ring hollow and make him look even more like the fringe idiot he is. We can always hope….

The real problem was that the majority on the committee had no interest in doing their job: investigating whether Kavanaugh was qualified to sit on the Supreme Court. They did not pursue any line of query that might impede their rush to confirm him. The failure to release the documents concerning his role in the White House during the Bush years show that they didn’t care about anything in his professional background that might undermine the faux image of his being an upstanding lawyer. Bruce is right but it was clear that the GOP didn’t care about any financial irregularities in his past. Actually they don’t care about anything in his past, including his alcoholism. You have to fight with the weapons that work — and the Ford allegations seem to be the only effective tool.

I don’t think there have to be any more sinister explanations for his voting than simply that he voted for things he’d have voted for in any case. In the House he was a fairly extreme Conservative, and he’s been the same in the Senate.

My guess is that Flake is looking for cover in order to restart his political career once the Trump GOP has imploded.

But Flake is smart enough to know that it is a bad idea to leave enemies behind him. I suspect that the politician in him quickly figured out having angry women confronting him everywhere he tried to go was not conducive to that future career.

True, Trump has no love of Flake. And that love is returned by Flake. But Flake’s roots are deep in the rightwing reactionary morass.

You have to reflect on the Post readership: they are primarily Democrats or liberals. So it isn’t surprising that the comments were opposed to her views. I remember occasionally reading her column in the Chicago Tribune during the Clinton years and being irritated with her hard-right positions, though she would sometimes surprise you.

At least Jen, the other conservative columnist, has seen the light.

True, of course, but I have read other conservative columnists there (when I just felt like beating myself over the head with a brick), and the comments were majority right-wing. Perhaps they had been posted on a right wing site, or perhaps this one wasn’t. Anyway, the difference was striking to me.

He gave an interview to some magazine and admitted that everyone coming forward with their stories of assault (or worse) affected him. He might be experiencing some sense of shame. And we all know how hard it can be to deal with new and strange feelings like that

He’s a member of the Mormon empire of Arizona (small ‘e’, no offense meant. They sometimes work together with each other politically, as well as spiritually.) Hard to tell at times what he might consider ‘sacred’.

Flake and Beto did some deserted island retreat with just the two of them, IIRC. With the purpose of learning how to work together. And I have seen Mormons (and other people) affected by their missions (or first overseas or out-of-country travel). I have also seen people start to act differently in hopes of being seen differently, without any accompanying change of heart.

Hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.

One thing that the Judiciary Dems were catching flak for was the repeated questioning about the FBI investigation. The knock was that they were ignoring all of Kavanaugh’s other sins and just repeating a question that had been asked and answered.

But damned if it didn’t stick. And look where we are now.

Would the delay and investigation still be happening if the Dems hadn’t asked the question so many times? Maybe. But even with a couple of Republican senators asking for an investigation, the idea really didn’t get any traction until the Dems hammered the question 10 or 20 times.

It was a lot smarter of a move than it appeared at the time.

The focus on the FBI investigation made sense in this particular hearing. Going in, this hearing was supposed to be about these allegations. To bring up other stuff would have probably had Grassley and the rest of the Republicans bitching about not staying on topic, and could have easily been painted as cheap shots.

Going forward, if/when there are more terrible nominees like this, Democrats on the committee need to make sure to coordinate. If there are six areas of concern, then two senators focus on one of each of them, rather than jumping around

speaking to Flake’s hometown of Snowflake, its like a lot of other small tight knit Mormon communities in AZ. It’s mostly ranching up there with some selective farming. Because he’s Mormon, he was able to get sucked into the East Valley Mormon group that controls a good portion of the GOP politics in the state. These folks are usually dead-red adherents but occasionally social advancement does happen albeit slowly. Flake has made his rep as supposedly being a GOP member with a conscious and it manifests itself rarely, but I’m positive that having to see those two women face to face in the elevator caused that twinge that led to this delay.

The Mormon church money machine probably means that Flake is well off, so the financials aren’t usually a leverage, yet public shame, brought home up close and personal works. He’s not John McCain, he’s not Orrin Hatch either, he’s one of the last GOP senators who’s still got a glimmer of humanity, notice I said glimmer… and we’re essentially all working under the assumption that the Ford testimony was damning but who’s to say what the FBI finds and what they report and what the GOP acts upon… let’s face the truth McConnell would vote for this guy even if he was sexually assaulting Mitch’s wife on the table behind him because he gives them to cover all of the GOP nefarious shenanigans if they can get him confirmed and in place before the Mueller probes start naming names in the inner circle and start linking those folks to the GOP party (which was also evidently complicit in handling money and coordinating logistics with the stolen data and may have even provided intel in what areas could be played with in regards to rigging votes).

Kavanaugh should also be brought down for committing perjury. His supporters could argue that these were “youthful” high jinks; it’s harder to claim that for testimony in Senate hearings, where I assume that it is actually illegal to testify falsely. Or is my assumption incorrect?

Because they know that they could be bought off — that for money, they would be willing to ignore the law. Now, they may not be willing to inflict physical harm for cash, but lying or cooking the books — they would be on board with that.

My brother once cheerfully admitted that if he had my math skills, he could have gotten in trouble working for an Enron or similar organization. He is a very smart guy but was not disciplined during his school years; how he bought into Trump is beyond me.

Rick Wilson mentioned that on this week’s WFLT. Compared it to the Cold War where the Soviets were convinced we were doing what they were doing and we were convinced they were doing what we were doing. He also admitted that they created astroturf groups and that probably is behind why some conservatives don’t believe protests or other progressive activism is real

Because they know that they could be bought off — that for money, they would be willing to ignore the law. Now, they may not be willing to inflict physical harm for cash, but lying or cooking the books — they would be on board with that.

My brother once cheerfully admitted that if he had my math skills, he could have gotten in trouble working for an Enron or similar organization. He is a very smart guy but was not disciplined during his school years; how he bought into Trump is beyond me.

We got 3 million illegals to vote in 2016 without leaving any evidence, but sadly, only in NY and CA, because it was totally worth being caught in the biggest voter fraud of all times just to run up the score. We elected a man who managed to start a recession that began a year before he even took office. And here, we got Christine Blasey Ford to concoct a story consistent Kavanaugh’s calendar, and tell it years ago, long before the nomination.

Compared it to the Cold War where the Soviets were convinced we were doing what they were doing and we were convinced they were doing what we were doing. He also admitted that they created astroturf groups and that probably is behind why some conservatives don’t believe protests or other progressive activism is real

We certainly spent years way overestimating the Soviet economic and military capacity, not seeing them as the Potemkin village they actually were. It nearly bankrupted this nation.

So whatever the FBI investigation uncovers: who do they submit their findings to, and when? I’m guessing Senate protocols would mean Grassley and Feinstein, but I also guess that the SJC Republicans are going to want to at least try to get a look at the FBI findings ahead of time (or at least ahead of the Dems, so they - the GOPers - can gin up some spin).

Flake wasn’t dissuaded from supporting Kavanaugh by any of the testimony; it makes sense that he would vote to confirm if the allegations are not verified. Someone who was actually concerned about the ethics of those placed on the SC and/or the preservation of Roe v Wade (and who wasn’t afraid of voter backlash) would have voted “No” even before Ford’s allegations were made public. Flake was not that person.

For decades, Brett Kavanaugh has traveled through the ranks of the conservative movement as smoothly as food slides down the gullet of a force-fed foie gras duck. An elite private high school, Yale, Yale Law School, a series of clerkships for conservative judges, a spot on Ken Starr’s team during his investigation of Bill Clinton, a gig as a lawyer in George W. Bush’s White House, and, thanks to Bush, a federal judgeship. When Donald Trump—or really, the right-wing Federalist Society—nominated Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court this summer, a fleet of shiny legal establishment types gushed over the pick, declaring him a fine legal mind and an upstanding citizen. One of Kavanaugh’s old professors, a self-described Hillary Clinton supporter named Akhil Reed Amar, called him a “superb nominee” in a New York Times op-ed.

Those people all look pretty bad right now.

This is important. “Ruling class” and “very wealthy” are not one and the same, though there is quite a bit of overlap. Kavanaugh, for example, is not wealthy and his family not unusually so, but he has had an inside track to power since the day he was born. The more ruthless and corrupt the ruling class is, the more likely it is to do the bidding of the wealthy: That is the essence of corruption. Again, though, they are not the same.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy were both wealthy, and members of the ruling class, yet their efforts benefited all Americans.

The current cesspool is the result of a very deliberate plan that has been underway for 60 years, beginning with the loathesome Hunt family in Texas in the 1950s. It was spelled out in the Powell Memo in 1971.

I’ve always found Facebook’s constant attempts to pry personal information out of you (often involving trickery of some kind) to be incredibly off-putting, and I make a point of never sharing anything personal there. I don’t know why so many people seem to be fine with it. Facebook’s management is completely corrupt.

Except that making it dependent on a SMS based smart phone, essentially another computer that can be hacked, isn’t a whole lot better. Also with a Stingray an attacker could just intercept the authorization text, bypassing the phone’s security entirely as long as they were within a few miles of it. That’s why I like the idea of stand alone cryptography based Universal Second Factor USB key fobs. The best security would also include something like a retina scan, which given the ubiquity of cameras in devices shouldn’t be that hard to implement.

I use Postbox as my Mac email client, and I’ve seen similar problems with a Yahoo account I still have from back in the Stone Age. Suddenly refuses to accept the password.

So far, it always fixes it to go to the Yahoo site, log in with the password that doesn’t work in Postbox, and change the password.

Yahoo email is ugly and it wants to die. But AOL email is even worse.

Some of my ATT email accounts are from back in the ‘90’s, the stone age as you call it. So many people have contacted me via them I’d hate to have to switch everybody over to gmail.

Checking one of my gmail accounts and I see ATT sent me a message about temporary locking my access ID three days ago.

Now when I dropped ATT as a service (some time ago) I was told I could keep the email addresses at Yahoo, and sure enough they have continued to work.

But why would ATT still be involved in managing the email accounts?

And, I’ve continued to receive and send emails via the ATT addresses the past couple of days, after the ATT email at gmail was received.

It all sounds screwy.

I don’t have an issue with using GMail in a browser or in the Android app on my phone; that lets me weed out the obvious and voluminous crap emails. But, as long as I can continue to connect via POP3 with Outlook on my main desktop when I want, I will, because that lets me archive my emails on a machine I have control over.

They know that if he is fully investigated, there’s no way in hell that he’ll make it. They are rigging the system to railroad this guy onto the SCOTUS bench, there’s not a damn thing we can do about it, and honestly it’s disheartening to know that my family is going to have to live with the consequences and I may not live long enough to see all the damage undone.

Sure that is their intention. But you can only keep bullshitting for so long until everyone knows they are standing in it.

Smart people are obviously not buying all of this dodge and deflect and announcing the newest squirrel over there.

We’ve said he was going to be pushed through for weeks now. And he is not.

The country just needs to keep the pressure up, media needs to snoop like it hasn’t in years and Democrats have to keep doing what they are doing and staying in the public with what they find and think is dirty.

This all adds to the elections now and in 2020 too.

And time. The more time the better. It allows this to grow and grow.
