I want to say I hope I didn’t offend when I commented about mental health words being used as description of bad behavior and then put autism under the mental health category in the previous thread.
I have mentioned in the past a great friend of mine, since passed, and his wife, my friend from Puerto Rico, raised a severely autistic son.
What helped them was the fact my friend worked in mental health and he had the patience and understanding to work with his son. He always considered it part of mental health. Maybe he was wrong to think that way, but he knew his stuff and helped his son a lot to the point he and his wife helped get programs going for Columbus Schools.
Also, it was my understanding the debate still goes on about whether it should be classified neurological, mental or both. Right now I think many of the people in the field come from the psychological discipline.
I am still learning.

Immanuel Wallerstein posits the US leaving the Bretton-Woods System on 15 Aug 1971 as the point at which the decline started, but that’s just haggling after the fact: it does look like the early 70s when US geopolitical power seemed to decline.

He’s also arguing that capitalism, as it is, is reaching its limits, and is becoming increasingly unstable.
I don’t always agree with what he says, but I find his bi-monthly commentaries are definitely an interesting read.
To be nitpicky, the US became an empire when we acquired the Phillippines and Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American war. For that matter, we arguably became an empire when we took the West from Texas to California in the Mexican-American War.

Yep. I always recommend Steve Silberman’s book Neurotribes for people who want to understand. We’re really only seeing understanding and acceptance of autism in really the last decade and we’re still not there. Our brains are amazing and complex, lots more research is being done so hopefully we’ll keep learning.
My biggest peeve though is using autism as an insult. To denote either low intelligence or anti social behavior. As Happy pointed out, he doesn’t like being solo that much, and likes people. My son is the same way, unless he’s at home, then he shuts down because he needs to recharge, even after positive social gatherings. If you’ve met an autistic person, you’ve met one, not all. I’m also still in advocate mode, lol, it’s kinda hard for me to shut that off, even though I’m not needed for that much these days.

A coroner says three males are dead after a car explosion in downtown Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said at a news conference Sunday that authorities are working to identify the victims.
Authorities say the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is taking the lead on the investigation. The FBI and local authorities are assisting.
Saw the excruciatingly long winded press conference. Officials went to some lengths to emphasize that there was no remaining threat, which means they are fairly sure the perp died in the explosion. Authorities in neighboring Bucks County released an alleged serial bomber on bail at the end of June, despite finding a cache of bombs and bombs making materials in his house. One of the confiscated bombs was quite large, 18” high and 5” in diameter, which is unusual in cases like this. A bomb that size would also seem to be consistent with the massive damage to the car last night.

A little over 15 years after the United States invaded and occupied Iraq on false pretences, the Department of State has been forced to close the US consulate in Basra because the US cannot guarantee its security.Basra has been roiled this summer by huge protests against lack of services and mass sickenings of thousands caused by inadequately purified water. Infuriated crowds burned down the Iranian consulate in protest against Iran’s influence on the Iraqi state. Just last week, Basra activist Soad Ali was gunned down. (Then instagram model and rights activist Tara Fares, who had 3 million followers on Instagram, was gunned down on a visit to Baghdad from Erbil this week, as well).
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has asked all Americans to leave Basra, and State has issued a travel advisory for Americans warning them against travel to Iraq.
The State Department spokesperson blamed the closing on “Iran-backed militias,” which is silly, since Iran’s own consulate was burned down and the militias’ target appears to have been the airport. Iran doesn’t seem to be in control of Basra. The Trump administration habitually lies about Iran just as it lies about everything else. Of course, there are pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. If Washington did not want that, they shouldn’t have overthrown the Iraqi government and dissolved the army.

If a state wants to work their way around it, however, what if they were to file charges before a federal pardon for similar crimes? I don’t see how this ruling would permit a US president to directly issue a pardon for state charges already in effect.

I was looking at the filings in that case. Not a single amicus brief in support of keeping the doctrine in place. I suspect this might well be a near unanimous opinion doing away with the doctrine (Ginsburg and Thomas both seem to favor doing away with it).
On the question of a pardon, that’s not necessarily before the Court. But I suspect it will be addressed at least tangentially.

Petitioner Terance Gamble was convicted in Alabama state court for being a felon in possession of a firearm and served a one-year sentence. The federal government, through the Alabama U.S. Attorney’s Office, then charged Gamble with being a felon in possession of a firearm under federal law for the very same conduct giving rise to his state conviction.
In this case, it does indeed sound like the exact same statutory offense, and he was already convicted at the state level before the federal government pressed charges.

IANAL, but I would think that if the feds charged a crime, say, Citizen X laundered money for Y in that they defrauded Bank A by inflating a mortgage on Condo F, and were convicted and then pardoned for that crime, a state DA could then charge Citizen Y if they laid state charges for defrauding the same bank in the same manner for Condo G. They just could not do it for Condo F.

I have some sad news, if expected. Our oldest cat, Silver has taken a turn for the worse, and it’s terminal. The last couple weeks have been completely indulgent for her. But despite the best food and care her weight and sight are declining fast, already deaf. In the next few days she will go in for a kindly final visit to the vet. I can’t ask more, she gave us her entire life. The other two seem to know, deferring to her at every turn. But… damn.

I can’t even tell you how many memories this brought back, and I didn’t live in a frat. I lived in a co-op, a co-op notorious for our parties. We had a beer machine (a worked over Coke machine with a key lock that had to be engaged before you could buy Shiner Bock), Friday Bar (after school on Fridays, alcohol on the patio, unless raining, otherwise in the dining room), and great parties. These were all house positions. The beer machine and Bar were illegal, btw.
I have one swimming pool story. It was Halloween, oh probably around 1982. One of my friends dressed up in a black suit and tie and recruited two other friends to do the same. She also had a tape recorder with the Godfather theme song on it. As she was wandering around the pool, one woman was so stunned she jumped into the pool to get away. Apparently she thought Abby was her dad. That might have been the year someone won the costume contest dressed up as a carton of Dannon Sinsemilla yogurt. And we never found out who the person was who dressed up in a full scarlet tux topped with a devil’s face mask and plastic pitchfork with red tines was. But he showed up every single year.
But one thing is for damn sure. We cleaned up the next day after the party because we had Sunday lunch. We had no vomit lying around.

I think this whole back-and-forth about the scope of the FBI investigation is a concerted effort to keep him from making a public splash with Julie Swetnick’s charges.
