From dead thread:

re: #87 Anymouse 🌹

When the world looked around after World War 2, the only major power that was not smashed into rubble was the United States. At that moment, we were effectively an empire (even if we didn’t call ourselves such).

Actually, that’s similar to what Immanuel Wallerstein has been saying for ages, albiet from a more geopolitical sense: that the US has been an empire (He uses the term “hegemon”.) since the end of WW2.

However, the difference is: he’s been arguing since I don’t know when- I first came across his work in the early 2000s- that the US actually lost it’s hegemony at the start of the 1970s, and has since been fighting a rear-guard action to mitigate the effects of this, and the most effective Presidents have been the ones that mitigate the effects well, and the Presidents that fight against mitigating the effects are in fact accelerating the decline of the US’s geopolitical power.

He’s also arguing that capitalism, as it is, is reaching its limits, and is becoming increasingly unstable.

I don’t always agree with what he says, but I find his bi-monthly commentaries are definitely an interesting read.

I want to say I hope I didn’t offend when I commented about mental health words being used as description of bad behavior and then put autism under the mental health category in the previous thread.

I have mentioned in the past a great friend of mine, since passed, and his wife, my friend from Puerto Rico, raised a severely autistic son.

What helped them was the fact my friend worked in mental health and he had the patience and understanding to work with his son. He always considered it part of mental health. Maybe he was wrong to think that way, but he knew his stuff and helped his son a lot to the point he and his wife helped get programs going for Columbus Schools.

Also, it was my understanding the debate still goes on about whether it should be classified neurological, mental or both. Right now I think many of the people in the field come from the psychological discipline.

I am still learning.

Here in west-central Illinois, we have been dry for several years. We had a low spot on our farm where the water table was always just below the surface, and a track hoe just dug a big, big hole to bury our old house and a big tree stump. Going down 20 feet, it was dry. I’m scared we are heading toward a dust bowl here.

Yet another aspect of the Orange Anus regime that goes generally unexamined by pretty much everybody: the staged bogosity of Trump’s idiot “campaign” rallies. Immanuel Wallerstein posits the US leaving the Bretton-Woods System on 15 Aug 1971 as the point at which the decline started, but that’s just haggling after the fact: it does look like the early 70s when US geopolitical power seemed to decline.

BTW If you want to read the article that clued me into the existence of Immanuel Wallerstein, it’s this article from Foreign Policy magazine, which was originally published in early 2002, but, as you may notice from the updated date, was still exists on their website as a revised article from Nov 2009.

Let’s have a conversation about Vermont:

Threats on black Vermont lawmaker were so ‘dangerous,’ she dropped re-election bid. Now she has resigned.

A black Vermont lawmaker first suspended her re-election campaign before resigning altogether from her post following racist attacks against her and her family.

When state Rep. Kiah Morris announced August 24 she was abandoning her bid for a third term in the Vermont House of Representatives, she cited disturbing social media messages. The Bennington Democrat intended to finish her current term, though, she said.

“Political discourse, and in particular within the sphere of social media has been divisive, inflammatory and at times, even dangerous,” Morris wrote. “It is my hope that as a state, we will continue to demand greater support and protections for one another from those forces which seek to divide and destroy our communities.”

She did not elaborate, but her husband, James Lawton, has documented several such messages — including one calling their son a “mongrel” — as well as in-real-life harassment in the form of swastikas painted on trees near their home.

Arguably, the idea of a post-war global cooperative system was the plan after WWII. But the rise of the USSR, the communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, and the need for so many other major participants in the war to rebuild, that plan was put on hold a bit. It took the world decades to build international systems that not only creates a situation where a major conflict is incredibly less likely but where American influence can cede a bit. It is really only our moral leadership, the soft power that conservatives are so quick to mock and dismiss, that has kept us a world leader. We’ve seen now, for nearly two years, what happens when we don’t have moral leadership that our allies and partners can trust

No offense taken. Many autistic people also have mental health issues along with autism. My son’s best friend is bipolar and has Aspergers. Another friend has a son on the spectrum that has schizophrenia. Co-morbidities. My son has depression and anxiety disorder and has Aspergers. Humans and their brains are complicated.

Did you know the early cases of people with severe Autism, before it was classified and beginning to be understood, were thought to be Schizophrenic?

Many ended up in institutions, which is really sad now that more is known about them.

I can’t imagine either my friend’s now 24 year old son, or my next door neighbor’s 14 year old son institutionalized.

Mental institutions as they were in the past were some of man’s worst creations ever.

re: #6 Alephnaught

From dead thread:

To be nitpicky, the US became an empire when we acquired the Phillippines and Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American war. For that matter, we arguably became an empire when we took the West from Texas to California in the Mexican-American War.

Granted, there’s a bit of both-siderism in this article…

…but this paragraph is spot-on, and something even genuine Never-Trumpers like Rick Wilson are loathe to admit:

There was always been a dark side to American conservatism, much of it originating in the antebellum curse of a society, large parts of which favored slavery and the extermination of America’s native population, the exclusion of immigrants from American life, and discrimination against Catholics and Jews. Many of us had hoped that the civil-rights achievements of the mid-20th century (in which Republicans were indispensable partners), changing social norms regarding women, and that rising levels of education had eliminated the germs that produced secession, lynching, and Indian massacres. Instead, those microbes simply went into dormancy, and now, in the presence of Trump, erupt again like plague buboes—bitter, potent and vile.

Kavanaugh’s Tell: “Revenge on Behalf of the Clintons,” Plural

“…In using that word “revenge” and imagining that Democrats are exacting revenge for both the Clinton impeachment and the use of corrupt means as a means of winning the 2016 election, Kavanaugh admits that he’s just getting a taste of the medicine he once administered. But his response to that is not to take a step back from the edge of the abyss that he himself created (and imagines himself to be standing on), take a step back with the recognition that he himself is not immune from his own tactics, but instead to complete the next logical step, the adoption of those same measures on the highest court of the land.

Yep. I always recommend Steve Silberman’s book Neurotribes for people who want to understand. We’re really only seeing understanding and acceptance of autism in really the last decade and we’re still not there. Our brains are amazing and complex, lots more research is being done so hopefully we’ll keep learning.

My biggest peeve though is using autism as an insult. To denote either low intelligence or anti social behavior. As Happy pointed out, he doesn’t like being solo that much, and likes people. My son is the same way, unless he’s at home, then he shuts down because he needs to recharge, even after positive social gatherings. If you’ve met an autistic person, you’ve met one, not all. I’m also still in advocate mode, lol, it’s kinda hard for me to shut that off, even though I’m not needed for that much these days.

Allentown police presser:
The Latest: 3 dead after Pennsylvania car explosion

4:20 p.m.

A coroner says three males are dead after a car explosion in downtown Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said at a news conference Sunday that authorities are working to identify the victims.

Authorities say the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is taking the lead on the investigation. The FBI and local authorities are assisting.

Saw the excruciatingly long winded press conference. Officials went to some lengths to emphasize that there was no remaining threat, which means they are fairly sure the perp died in the explosion. Authorities in neighboring Bucks County released an alleged serial bomber on bail at the end of June, despite finding a cache of bombs and bombs making materials in his house. One of the confiscated bombs was quite large, 18” high and 5” in diameter, which is unusual in cases like this. A bomb that size would also seem to be consistent with the massive damage to the car last night.

A little over 15 years after the United States invaded and occupied Iraq on false pretences, the Department of State has been forced to close the US consulate in Basra because the US cannot guarantee its security.

Basra has been roiled this summer by huge protests against lack of services and mass sickenings of thousands caused by inadequately purified water. Infuriated crowds burned down the Iranian consulate in protest against Iran’s influence on the Iraqi state. Just last week, Basra activist Soad Ali was gunned down. (Then instagram model and rights activist Tara Fares, who had 3 million followers on Instagram, was gunned down on a visit to Baghdad from Erbil this week, as well).

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has asked all Americans to leave Basra, and State has issued a travel advisory for Americans warning them against travel to Iraq.

The State Department spokesperson blamed the closing on “Iran-backed militias,” which is silly, since Iran’s own consulate was burned down and the militias’ target appears to have been the airport. Iran doesn’t seem to be in control of Basra. The Trump administration habitually lies about Iran just as it lies about everything else. Of course, there are pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. If Washington did not want that, they shouldn’t have overthrown the Iraqi government and dissolved the army.

Well, here’s the explanation right from the horse’s mouth, as it were:

And yet, for nearly 100 years, the same Supreme Court has sanctioned a gaping loophole to this principle: the “dual-sovereign” exception. Under this doctrine, state and federal prosecutors may indeed prosecute a person for the same underlying crime, under the specious logic that different “sovereigns” make for different “offenses” under the text of the Double Jeopardy Clause. In effect, the Court has given state and federal governments the green light to do together what they cannot do alone.

Now that states cannot prosecute people for the same crime twice, and neither can the federal government, it makes no sense to allow them to do so in tandem.

They seem to be saying that, if someone is first tried and acquitted for a federal crime, they shouldn’t be subjected to state charges and vice versa. But if someone hasn’t been charged either federally or at the state level, would this ruling prevent both in the case of a federal pardon? They don’t say.

I would kind of be on board with their interpretation if it weren’t for Ford-Nixon. I also suspect, though, that this ruling will be way more lopsided than 5-4. It has that generic-ruling smell to it that will probably also sway some of the liberal judges.

If a state wants to work their way around it, however, what if they were to file charges before a federal pardon for similar crimes? I don’t see how this ruling would permit a US president to directly issue a pardon for state charges already in effect.

And the states could probably argue that if a president pardons before conviction, then the person hasn’t been tried and they can proceed. But that will be another run through the judicial system.

On the question of a pardon, that’s not necessarily before the Court. But I suspect it will be addressed at least tangentially.

They also ignore the key distinction between the term crime, which is imprecise, and specific statutory offense. The cops who beat Rodney King were charged in Los Angeles County Court with assault and excessive force, and after the Simi Valley jury acquitted them the feds charged them with violating King’s civil rights. So, two totally different statutes stemming from the same underlying conduct. So, the question before SCOTUS also becomes can the President issue pardons for things that aren’t even technically crimes under federal law just to prevent State and local courts from punishing the underlying conduct? I think it’s far better that they leave things as they are because otherwise they’re going to end up deep into the weeds.

And I would hope (I know, lol) that the actual arguments before and decision from SCOTUS would address this. From the original amicus brief:

Petitioner Terance Gamble was convicted in Alabama state court for being a felon in possession of a firearm and served a one-year sentence. The federal government, through the Alabama U.S. Attorney’s Office, then charged Gamble with being a felon in possession of a firearm under federal law for the very same conduct giving rise to his state conviction.

In this case, it does indeed sound like the exact same statutory offense, and he was already convicted at the state level before the federal government pressed charges.

IANAL, but I would think that if the feds charged a crime, say, Citizen X laundered money for Y in that they defrauded Bank A by inflating a mortgage on Condo F, and were convicted and then pardoned for that crime, a state DA could then charge Citizen Y if they laid state charges for defrauding the same bank in the same manner for Condo G. They just could not do it for Condo F.

I can’t even tell you how many memories this brought back, and I didn’t live in a frat. I lived in a co-op, a co-op notorious for our parties. We had a beer machine (a worked over Coke machine with a key lock that had to be engaged before you could buy Shiner Bock), Friday Bar (after school on Fridays, alcohol on the patio, unless raining, otherwise in the dining room), and great parties. These were all house positions. The beer machine and Bar were illegal, btw.

I have one swimming pool story. It was Halloween, oh probably around 1982. One of my friends dressed up in a black suit and tie and recruited two other friends to do the same. She also had a tape recorder with the Godfather theme song on it. As she was wandering around the pool, one woman was so stunned she jumped into the pool to get away. Apparently she thought Abby was her dad. That might have been the year someone won the costume contest dressed up as a carton of Dannon Sinsemilla yogurt. And we never found out who the person was who dressed up in a full scarlet tux topped with a devil’s face mask and plastic pitchfork with red tines was. But he showed up every single year.

But one thing is for damn sure. We cleaned up the next day after the party because we had Sunday lunch. We had no vomit lying around.

ATF and FBI are satisfied that the perp died in the Allentown explosion, waiting only for notification of next of kin. I usually don’t speculate about perp identities but this is too much for coincidence. It would be amazing if this is not him. No information on the other two victims. They could be accomplices, innocent associates, or just passersby. Condition of the bodies suggests they were inside the car though and nobody in the neighborhood has come forward to report a missing relative.

Amazing that they let a terrorist out on bail. Of course he was white.

Might as well spell it out. I’m really thinking this is white privilege in action. The guy was charged with having a WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION, which was seized and photographed, for fucks sake, and they still let him out on bail. It also reflects a fair amount of privilege that he was able to raise 750 large to pay bail.

I have some sad news, if expected. Our oldest cat, Silver has taken a turn for the worse, and it’s terminal. The last couple weeks have been completely indulgent for her. But despite the best food and care her weight and sight are declining fast, already deaf. In the next few days she will go in for a kindly final visit to the vet. I can’t ask more, she gave us her entire life. The other two seem to know, deferring to her at every turn. But… damn.

Awwww. Sorry to hear about Silver.

If that was the guy, he should have been locked up! Especially since he owned a chemical company! (From the previous incidents)

Surman owns Consolidated Chemicals & Solvents, a small-scale company that sells chemical-based products mostly through online retailers, including eBay. He’s currently locked in a legal battle with his local township over the company, which officials say operates without proper zoning permits.

Wow. She is out at her greenhouses today.

How have her greenhouses recovered after the storm damage? I hated to hear about that.

The new owner who bought our farm just tore down a 100+ year old silver maple that was in the yard. Wanted a wider area to swing big farm machinery through. I knew the house was coming down, as it was beyond reasonable repair, but I was sure sorry to see that old tree go. It must have been the home of a veritable army of creatures.

From my 20 plus years experience of the internet: when an North American right-winger starts a social media comment with “Wow!”, it’s usually an involuntary reaction to having been blindsided by the 2x4” thwack of someone replying to them from a real-life perspective, then doubling down on what they said, and acting like it’s the other person’s fault that they felt this reaction.

Kavanaugh absolutely assaulted Ford. There’s no doubt in my mind, because her story was far too believable. They knew each other. She isn’t confusing him with anyone else. She knows what he did.

I ALSO believe that Kavanaugh’s well established history of being such a heavy drinker and a sloppy, fall-down drunk means that after the assault happened, he continued to drink with his buddies to the point where he passed out and blacked out. Again. That’s why he’s so adamant that he’s being falsely accused. He doesn’t remember the night at all. And honestly? That makes everything WORSE, not better, because it means he acted like this all the time. It was entirely routine for him.

In any event, he proved he’s unfit for the Court. And Republicans have proven their total moral bankruptcy as a party by continuing to support him and continuing to attack Dr. Ford and his other accusers.

If you read the whole article, however, there are all sorts of arguments (as the headline itself claims) that Beer-Keg-Brett will help GOPer Senators. Also, this maddening-as-fuck detail:

The bifurcated campaign over the Supreme Court nomination came into focus quickly at the end of the week, as Democratic House candidates criticized Judge Kavanaugh, while their Senate counterparts treaded far more carefully.

In Nevada, Representative Jacky Rosen, a Democrat who is challenging Senator Dean Heller, released a new ad on Friday right as tensions were running highest about whether Republicans had the votes to confirm the would-be justice. But the ad trumpeted Ms. Rosen’s willingness to “work with both parties,” noted Mr. Trump had signed a veterans health care bill she had sponsored and highlighted her willingness to take on Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader.

How fucking idiotic is this?! A surge in Dem turnout ought to help Senators as well, so why the fuck are they acting like they have to appeal to GOPers in order to win?? Also, the best ad Senate Dems have - even if they’re in the reddest of red states like WV - is highlighting how, if they can’t get control back, SCOTUS will be stuffed with 1%-er hacks who’ll destroy the ACA and other aspects of the social safety net.

Totally agree that he assaulted Dr. Ford. I actually had a tiny bit of doubt until he came out on Thursday raging like a lunatic and weeping. This is SUCH a tell for an abusive person.

I’m really curious to find out what Avenatti will do. Something tells me he has a lot of cards up his sleeve to play tomorrow or Tuesday!

I think this whole back-and-forth about the scope of the FBI investigation is a concerted effort to keep him from making a public splash with Julie Swetnick’s charges.

As I understood it, he was ready to do that over the weekend. Then the deal with the investigation happened, and he probably figured he’d better hold off until the FBI talked to her.

Then the story came out about the limitations, and I’ll bet he was ready to go on Sunday. Then the tRump tweet denying the limitations. Now we learn that was bullshit.

They’re hoping to keep wrong-footing him day by day till they run out the clock, but I don’t think they can keep it up for a week.
