Newly Revealed Text Messages Suggest Kavanaugh Knew About an Accuser’s Claim Before It Was Public - and Tried to Get Ex-Classmates to Deny It

If all the dates line up and this news is verified, Brett Kavanaugh will have some serious explaining to do: Text messages suggest Kavanaugh wanted to refute accuser’s claim before it became public.

WASHINGTON — In the days leading up to a public allegation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh exposed himself to a college classmate, the judge and his team were communicating behind the scenes with friends to refute the claim, according to text messages obtained by NBC News.

Kerry Berchem, who was at Yale with both Kavanaugh and his accuser, Deborah Ramirez, has tried to get those messages to the FBI for its newly reopened investigation into the matter but says she has yet to be contacted by the bureau.

Kavanaugh told the Senate committee the first time he heard of this allegation was when he read the original New Yorker article. This may end up being the most consequential lie he told, although definitely not the only one.

Arrogant, entitled, smug, lying asshole.

The article suggests that Kavanaugh knew as early as July about the whole thing. And that the two had a very uncomfortable meeting again 10 years ago at a wedding.

We’re getting a fuller picture of why the SJC felt a letter of 65 women was necessary to have at the ready.

OT, but significant if not already mentioned. The Moonie Times, probably as part of a defamation settlement, is retracting an article peddling a Seth Rich Conspiracy theory and apologizing to the Rich family, who they accused of taking money from Wikileaks for DNC emails.

And the hits keep on coming:

tl;dr, Kavanaugh is drinking at a bar after UB40 concert, sees guy he thinks is the lead singer and approaches him, only to get blown off for being obnoxious. Brett acts in a totally mature fashion…by throwing a beer in the guy’s face, leading to a fight that ends with the cops being called.

to me, the Kavanaugh hearings are kind of unravelling just like the Watergate story was in regards to the administration…. “don’t these people understand, we’ve already denied EVERYTHING!!!!!”

It’s as if, of course we’re the party in power, you HAVE to believe everything we say even if you find proof otherwise… those are the RULES!!!!!!!

While I fully accept that not everyone is going to agree with me on everything, the one trait that has to be essential to be a judge ( at least imho) is that they have to be fair and they have to not be a liar…. and on those two traits alone, Kavanaugh certainly appears to be unable to clear the bar (unlike Gorsuch)…

I really think the reason that Trump wants THIS guy so bad is that he’ll gladly operate as a GOP partisan on the bench no matter the offense, the law or the issue.

At the same time, it seems there’s a growing number of folks who knew him who recognized him for the douchebag he was and didn’t come forward for fear of being alone in the spotlight.

This is the first time we’re hearing about this bar fight, likely because it wasn’t all the important by itself. But fit it together with the allegations made against him and it paints the picture of a guy who did not like taking “no” for an answer when he’d had a few drinks.

This whole thing is delicious.

Do you like beer? Have you ever blacked out?

Yes. My first summer after Freshman year at Tulane, went to a friends house, (I forget if was Tobin’s or Squi’s) and we raided the booze cabinet when his ‘rents were out of town. I found a bottle of Southern Comfort, decided I liked the taste of it, and demolished most of it.

I have never been so sick in my life. Poisoned.

That was it for both Southern Comfort and blackout drinking for the rest of my life. It’s a stupid, self-destructive thing to do.

Although, thinking about it, maybe I should give it another go.

Maybe I can get a lifetime job on the Federal Bench!

Raw Story now reporting a new allegation against Kavanaugh including violence.

rawstory.com

“Kavanaugh and a friend offered me a ride home,” the person wrote in her letter. “I don’t know the other boy’s name. I was in his car to go home. His friend was behind me in the backseat. Kavanaugh kissed me forcefully. I told him I only wanted a ride home. Kavanaugh continued to grope me over my clothes, forcing his kisses on me and putting his hand under my sweater. ‘No,’ I yelled at him.”

The source said that the boy in the backseat reached around and put his hand over the source’s mouth and held her to keep her in the car.

“I screamed into his hand. Kavanaugh continued his forcing himself on me,” the source continued. “He pulled up my sweater and bra exposing my breasts, and reached into my panties, inserting his fingers into my vagina. My screams were silenced by the boy in the backseat covering my mouth and groping me as well.”

The accuser then said that Kavanaugh slapped her and told her to be quiet before forcing her to perform oral sex on him.

I agree. The source is RawStory and they don’t do the best job in vetting their reports. They may not make anything up on their own or pass on a thoroughly discredited story but there are plenty of people who would manufacture falsehoods and they would be delighted to convey them to a larger audience.

Agree. As per this article on how to correctly spot a false rape allegation:

False accusers almost never tell stories that could, by any stretch of the imagination, be seen as an innocent misunderstanding. In a study of false rape claims made to the Los Angeles Police Department, 78% involved claims of aggravated rape—assaults involving a gun or knife, gang rapes, and/or attacks resulting in injuries.

This too:

…so yes, while I can absolutely see Beer-Keg-Brett behaving as this other anonymous account describes, there are parts that feel too conveniently dramatic (like someone took CBF’s story, changed the setting, and decided to crank the violence/sleaze up to 11).

In Slate’s defense, the headline is clickbait, but the article itself actually lays out how this sort of bullshit is just that. That the men who are scared are (indeed) the assholes who prey on women to get their jollies, who now feel as though they’re “victims” because society let them get away with it for so long that they thought it was acceptable behavior. Sort of ties back to the discussion had on this blog the other night about how, in 80s pop culture, the idea of a guy taking advantage of a girl in an incapacitated state was not only accepted but even portrayed as something worthy of laughs or cheers.

True, but compared to the current clown act/shitshow, his Administration was at least run competently- maybe that’s the one saving grace about the Trump Circus…

Dubya was scarcely a braintrust, but at least he and rest of his gang - vile ideologues as they were - knew how a President was supposed to look and act (and administer): not sure what’s worse: that Trump doesn’t and can’t: or that his cheering crowds of MAGAts don’t care.

Trump leaves Rose Garden listeners punch-drunk … even without alcohol

Sub-header: The president was ostensibly promoting a new trade deal but for 90 minutes he came across as a madcap carnival barker

It may have been the world’s worst advertisement for teetotalism.

On Monday Donald Trump careered all over the place, displaying no discernible inhibitions, his speech a little slurry at times, blurting out words that most people would regret in the morning as he held his second wild ride with the media in less than a week.

The US president was ostensibly making an announcement about a new trade deal with the Canada and Mexico, but was also questioned about Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s youthful drinking habits.

I knew a lot of Kavanaughs in high school and college. All the same. White, entitled, never got their fingernails dirty, arrogant, and total dickheads.

Always because they were protected by their friends and families with the power and connections to make things go away.

Brett is just repeating that need. He is relying on all those ol’ buds, and the Republican machine that got him to this point to pull his drunk ass out of another jam.

Still not responsible for anything, yet those in power cover for him because he has been tailored to be their boy, especially for Trump.

The minute he is unprotected he is going to come apart. And it still will not be his fault.

But the prime interest rate was so close to zero for so long that a small increase might seem like a lot proportionately to what it was, but it still seems far too small of an increase to me.

And the wealth transfer that is accelerating under cover of the Trump circus is a very troubling thing.

I look at what people discuss online, and what stories get promoted on social media, and so much of it seems to me like a distraction.

The GOP Congress is not just AWOL on important economic issues, but they strike me as being fatalistic, willing to chuck out the whole idea of the broad interests of society for a feudal state.

What if Trump was the result of that time-travel.

Well crap.. Maybe Dr Who can do something.. People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a nonlinear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey… stuff.

I can remember a specific date, 01 February 2008, on Mt. Werner in Colorado. 37 inches of snow in 24 hours at the summit, at times it was snowing four inches an hour. Snorkel skiing, we like to call it. That day, deepest snow I’ve ever skied in my life. I’ll never forget.

God Has Been Using Racehorses To Speak to Mark Taylor About Plans To Execute Democrats (Right Wing Watch)

Mark Taylor (the so-called “firefighter prophet”) weighs in.

Mark Taylor, the so-called “firefighter prophet” and radical conspiracy theorist who is the subject of a new movie premiering this week, appeared on Chris McDonald’s “The Mc Files” program on Friday, where he again asserted that opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is all about trying to prevent President Trump from establishing military tribunals in order to prosecute and execute Democratic leaders like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

“This has everything to do with military tribunals, them being charged with treason, and them going to prison for the rest of their lives and some being executed,” he said.

And the wealth transfer that is accelerating under cover of the Trump circus is a very troubling thing.

The GOP Congress is not just AWOL on important economic issues, but they strike me as being fatalistic, willing to chuck out the whole idea of the broad interests of society for a feudal state.

Do not characterize the GOP Congress as fatalistic — they are enthusiastic supporters at shredding the social safety net and concentrating wealth in the hands of those who are already wealthy — especially those in old industries. They are not fans of the new wealth of those in the tech industry who are not devout Republicans.

Consider the mindlessness of what gets passed out as advice or journalism:

Fed’s interest-rate hikes mean different things to different age groups

[…]

Savers are finally earning more on their cash — if only just a bit.

The national rate for a 12-month CD is 0.45 percent, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. That sounds like a pittance of interest, but it’s double the rate from a couple of years ago.

Rates for longer-term CDs are also rising, and the national rate for a five-year CD is up to 1.11 percent from 0.87 percent a year ago.

Such low figures mean many savers still aren’t keeping up with inflation, but analysts expect rates to continue trending higher. Savers can also typically find better rates at online banks than at traditional ones — they sometimes even match the rate of inflation, which was 2.7 percent last month. For a three-year CD, several online banks offer rates at that level or slightly higher.

[…]

That is all a bunch of misdirection.

Getting 1.11% on a CD is nothing when retailers like Amazon are doing double digit price increases.

To write that a 1.11% CD is something good in the face of what we’re facing, and about to face, is laughable.

And housing is once again experience a speculator’s boom, at least around here. Rental prices are skyrocketing. House flipping is sneaking back into the social milieu. As real estate prices go up, all of a sudden someone with a mortgage will find that lenders are all too eager to lend them money based on their “equity”.

And then with the outlandishly ballooning deficits thanks to the GOP, the markets will eventually drive up the cost of borrowing for the government, and this will be countered by more currency devaluation.

Anyone who is retired, or near retirement, who voted for Trump and the GOP chose to slit their own throats and those of tens of millions of other Americans with either fixed incomes or restricted earning potential.

Do not characterize the GOP Congress as fatalistic — …

But they are fatalistic, or pretend to be so in order to deceive their fundamentalist constituents.

They just don’t believe in making the world or our nation-state a better place. All they care about is getting a bigger piece of the action before it all burns down.

I’m becoming increasingly bothered by the inflation that is picking up.

Somehow our political attention has missed this.

I’m seeing in both everyday items and the major expenses (housing) prices are skyrocketing.

Hidden by national-average statistics, regional and local changes to prices can vary greatly from a national average.

The Fed raising interest rates might do something to rein in inflation, but doesn’t do crap for my fixed income.

This chart only goes back to 1971, but the 18% peak rate happened a few years after I graduated college. Banking deregulations, which allowed banks to abandon the 5%-6% savings interest rates AND raise mortgage rates were passed in 1980.

And paying 14% on a mortgage

We actually purchased a house through owner-financing for 5 years at 10.5%. Many people who tried to sell their house at that time also had to become bankers, lending money at a below market rate. In a couple years, we were able to refinance with a conventional mortgage at 10.75% — and thought we were fortunate.

We wound up selling our house in Oklahoma at auction; my wife took a significant loss on the property from when she purchased it.

On the other hand, we used the sale money to pay cash for our house here. (That also left us a place to store our stuff while we finalised the sale here … we didn’t have to get a storage facility or warehouse.)

there are plenty of places where a 5 year cd makes 3%. i don’t mess with cd’s because a) the rate of inflation is higher than the yield and b) returns get counted as income, making the effective return even worse, but things aren’t quite as dire as they’re presented.

Charles Johnson,

Looks like something did indeed come out of that FBI investigation after all. Maybe this will be enough to get justice for Christine Blasey Ford and keep Kavanaugh from getting nominated to the highest court in the land. This really makes him look guilty to all but perhaps his most blind apologists.
