Don’t Give Up

The official Don’t Give Up video. Directed by Godley and Creme.

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name
But no-one wants you when you lose

Don’t give up ‘cause you have friends
Don’t give up you’re not beaten yet
Don’t give up I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
Never thought that I could be affected
Thought that we’d be last to go
It is so strange the way things turn
Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Don’t give up you still have us
Don’t give up we don’t need much of anything
Don’t give up ‘cause somewhere there’s a place where we belong

Rest your head
You worry too much
It’s going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Don’t give up
Please don’t give up

Got to walk out of here
I can’t take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
and whatever may go
That river’s flowing
That river’s flowing

Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs

Don’t give up ‘cause you have friends
Don’t give up you’re not the only one
Don’t give up no reason to be ashamed
Don’t give up you still have us
Don’t give up now we’re proud of who you are
Don’t give up you know it’s never been easy
Don’t give up ‘cause I believe there’s a place
There’s a place
Where we belong

Don’t give up
Don’t give up
Don’t give up

Tell me we’re going to survive Donald Trump.

We’re going to survive Donald Trump, but for varying definitions of the word “survive”. The country is going to look very different on the other side, but I expect it to be still attached to the planet and with most of its current citizens still alive and breathing.

Most of us will survive Trump. Just by dint of his age and shit health, we will outlive him.

I’m not convinced the country will.

I will admit in this case I am trying to remain optimistic and I think we will survive as a nation but we will have a lot of work to do afterward.

Doesn’t this bizarre, elaborate fantasy world he’s badly constructing have to collapse under its own weight of sheer BS at some point?

Never. Not as long as the Chuck Todds and Brett Stephens continue to privilege anything a Republican says like it’s god’s own truth no matter how easily disproven or batshit insane it is. The current political atmosphere assures there is never any consequence for GOP bullshit. This entire ordeal is prove positive of that.

Music. All the genres. The words, the actions and the message. Most come from a place of pain and suffering. A dirge. A plea. A voice rising to be heard. Music also leads men to battle. To war. To pleasure. To pain. To rejoice. To remember. To forget. To ask forgiveness. To lend forgiveness. This world is beautifully cruel. It can lift and crush all at the same instant. The human condition. The miles of words strung together to try and make sense of it all. Why.
Why.
Because. Water flows. The winds move. And the sun will rise. Nothing is forever.
Nothing.
This too will pass. Pain, suffering, death and misery will claw through love and care and respect and joy. Because.
Nothing stays the same. Nothing.
I have been half insane since the fix was in. I saw the fix before. You did too. You might have missed it. I know I missed most. Too busy making music. And love. And caring. And raising a family by working and caring.
The money always has the edge. Always.
Do not give up. Do not turn away.
I have to temper my soul which has darkened. I have much to be thankful for, yet I feel as if I am an old duck whose waterproofing has worn thin.
I am soaked to the bone.
I will continue. I will rise above. I will meet my fate. I will continue to live.
Until I pass.
Then it’s up to you.
I had to lift that lid. Too many words in the way, thoughts race, mouth fails.
Thank you.

The Ohio State University mostly rubs me the wrong way for two reasons: They’re pretentious, and Urban Fucking Meyer. Roe vs Wade is tops on the list for sure… not for love of babies.. that’s a distant tertiary point in all this- the strict placement of women in society is the clear goal.

But Roe vs Wade is just the appetizer. Brown vs Board of Education going bye-bye, allowing the Banning of Evolution in schools, are coming. And a couple of Constitutional Amendements are coming as well- first of which is to Establish “Christianity” as the basis on the country, and another Amendment stating English as the Official language.

The 20th Century is noted as the development and entrenchment of modern statism. The 21st Century is shaping up to be repealing the 20th Century and a slide towards populist Fascism. This is a worldwide occurrence BTW. And these individual populist movements are often mutually exclusive. Shit’s about to get really ugly.

Everyone needs to decide how far they’re willing to go to resist. I was in the Army and consider myself still bound by my oath. I’ll be in the boonies if it comes to that.

Yep, just as I was commenting earlier. They are going to gloat and start talking about Roe v. Wade and others being overturned right after they had Collins put everyone to sleep saying they would not.

Have at it. It’s election time. Let’s make that a hot topic.

A key part of late messaging this election is to add The Future Under Kavanaugh in the messages and make it sound as it is here now and what it means.

Show his contorted mean faces and talk about how you will have less insurance, less protections from big corporations, and women will no longer control their own bodies.

All changing because Republicans did not care about character just power over you.

Please proceed. Discovery should be fun, though not so much for Kavanaugh. And they’d be able to bring in Rivera and subpeona Mark Judge to testify publicly under oath.

Plus, the simple fact is, he’d have to prove he didn’t do it. He can’t. Failure to recall an event is not the same as proof the event didn’t occur.

So Mrs. Fish has another friend who is still stuck in the conservative mindset. They were playing a Lego game and one of the characters was Gandalf. She chuckled and said, “Wouldn’t it be fabulous if, instead of introducing himself as ‘Gandalf the Grey’ or ‘Gandalf the White’, he said, ‘I’m Gandalf… OF THE RAINBOW!’” When she relayed this story to me, I died laughing. Then she informed me that her conservative friend was very put out by this joke and spent the rest of the evening chastising her how J. R. R. All the white beating real victims back into the shadows. We’re already seeing this whole thing leveraged to treat any and all people who come forward about rape and sexual assault as the real perpetrators and casting a genuine witch hunt against them. And Kavanaugh’s successful confirmation and the GOP’s general successes will only further embolden those who have a vested interest in treating false rape accusations as the super epidemic they treat it as.

Real victims are getting victimized twice, and there seems to be no recourse against it now.

For every #MeToo, there’s the Republicans shutting the door on every and all attempts for it to actually make a difference. And that pisses me right the fuck off as the father of a young daughter whom I fully intend to support into adulthood as every bit as much a wild shieldmaiden of the North as Mrs. Fish is. If some guy manhandles her, he WILL feel my wrath, and I WILL teach her how to handle herself before it gets to that point. That’s wonderful! Even though a facebook post per sae may not look like any sort of “grand” action, it still took a lot of courage and - perhaps most important of all - it gave others who had similar feelings “permission” to speak out. Sotheby’s Gets Banksy’ed at Contemporary Art Auction in London

In a moment that caught the art world by surprise, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon self-destructed just as the final hammer signaled the end of an evening of auctions in London. The work sold for £1,042,000 ($1.4 million), tying the artist’s record in pounds at auction previously achieved in 2008.

The framed work, spray paint and acrylic on canvas, mounted on board depicted a girl reaching out toward a bright red, heart shaped balloon - one of Banksy’s most iconic images - began to pass through a shredder hidden in the frame.

Cheeky…

A detail in the blog:

All of this energy at the end of the month helped make September the biggest dollar month in ActBlue’s history, with $184,841,230 raised by passionate small-dollar donors.

Dems donated $50M more in September than they did in the entire 2016 quarter. I suspect 2020 will look a lot different than 2016.

I have to wear polarized lenses. They don’t blank out TV screens but they sure distort them when I am a distance away. Sometimes different parts of an LCD or plasma screen have black spots or blotches.

Well, I know everybody’s (justifiably) depressed by today’s events. Kavanaugh’s decisions will be horrendous, but I think what people worry about most is the SCOTUS ruling that a sitting President is above the law—that theory being Kavanaugh’s selling point.

I’m sure Thomas and Gorsuch will go along with that, and I don’t know enough about Alito to have an opinion, but I have a feeling that might be a bridge too far for Roberts. He probably doesn’t want to literally, explicitly overturn landmark decisions like Roe, Griswold, Brown, etc., either—gotta keep up appearances. Just keep whittling away at their implementation.

IMO, it will be easier to deal with that later than starting from scratch with a complete overturn. Now if tRump gets to replace Ginsburg or Breyer, then it’s all over….

Too many specific, and provably false and misleading, Boeing talking points were making their way into general media coverage of SpaceX. This has nothing to do with Elon Musk’s evident personal problems, but with the company and its products.
Boeing may have used a lobbying firm to plant a scathing opinion piece about SpaceX in US news outlets. At stake is billions of dollars in NASA contracts.

Needless to say, Boeing also owns a whole pack of corrupt Congress-rats. These two elements, corrupt media and corrupt politicians, in fact work in tandem: Misleading the public (or more correctly the small proportion that is paying attention) provides cover and a rationale for Congress-critters when they pressure NASA on behalf of Boeing and its partners in the would-be space monopoly.

Boeing is an old hand at this shit. When they got caught trying to scam the USAF into paying way more to lease tankers than buy them outright, they went along with a suggestion for a contract competition. Then when EADS/Northrop Grumman won the contract, largely because they bought a better design to the table, Boeing used their influence in Congress to get the results tossed and demand a “new” competition. And (surprise, surprise) they won largely on Congressional pressure to “Buy American.”

I’m so tired of his unhinged egotistical bullshit. It’s obvious what the “funding secured” stunt was all about, he got Tesla’s board to approve a contract that gave him enormous stock options for hitting certain market cap targets, the first one kicks in at $100 Billion, they’re at $48 Billion now. The stunt was sloppy and stupid and the SEC slapped him pretty hard for it. He’s angry that he wasn’t able to make himself rich on hype and has to actually back it up with long term engineering and productivity wins.

They also really fucked up the UI with the latest OS update, and I told them so:

You used to be able to have any two apps up or maximize certain apps to full screen. Now the Navigation map is up all the time and you can only have one other app running in the bottom half of the screen. Oh, but they added classic Atari video games that you can play when the car is “off” to make up for this colossal blunder.

What I would like to see is Dr. Ford’s attorneys tell Grassley publicly that their client’s cooperation with the SJC was predicated upon the belief that there was a genuine interest in investigating her allegations against Brett Kavanaugh. And that, with the publication of the FBI’s whitewash and the subsequent confirmation of Kavanaugh, their client feels any further cooperation will be in support of the GOP’s naked efforts to attack their opponents and she has no interest in being a party to that. So if they want those documents, they had better be prepared to go to court over them.

This is absolutely incredible and a true reflection of how our country’s citizens feel about the forced upon swearing in of a drunken, lying, sexual predator. A rapist endorsed by this sham of an administration. We must show up in even greater numbers for midterm elections!

The goopers will expect the anti-Kavanaugh protests and evidence to stop immediately now. They are soulless political hacks, so figure the opposition to Drunky McRapist was a political stunt and therefore will be summarily shut down. The only anger they understand is the anger of the powerful against the powerless, so the idea that people can be genuinely outraged at injustice is completely alien.

Also remember that the people who want to destroy the Dems as a political force are all of a sudden trying to make the Dems stop confronting them and stop protesting. For our own political good, you see.

re: #72 Rocky-in-Connecticut

Roe vs Wade is tops on the list for sure… not for love of babies.. that’s a distant tertiary point in all this- the strict placement of women in society is the clear goal.

But Roe vs Wade is just the appetizer. Brown vs Board of Education going bye-bye, allowing the Banning of Evolution in schools, are coming. And a couple of Constitutional Amendements are coming as well- first of which is to Establish “Christianity” as the basis on the country, and another Amendment stating English as the Official language.

I don’t think they’ll be satisfied with overturning Roe and letting abortion “go back to the states.” I think there will be attempts to pass a nationwide abortion ban, especially if they keep control of Congress. If they don’t then sometime later.

I think overturning Obergefell is on their radar too. Griswold as well, though both won’t be as easy as Roe.

After that, abolishing the EPA, Dept. Of Education, curtailing protests, and passing Mark Levin’s “Liberty Amendments.”

Yeah, it’s gonna get a lot worse before it gets better.

They won’t set out to overturn RvW overnight, they’ll nibble at the edges in a way that will render it a dead letter. Such as making it constitutional for states and local governments to effectively ban abortion clinics by imposing costly and ridiculous “women’s health” regulations upon them. Or ruling that states may impose cut-off points for abortions earlier than Roe’s because of “medical advances” or whatever excuse they wish to make. There is any number of ways they could gut RvW and yet leave it standing, giving hacks like Collins the cover to say “See, they didn’t overturn it!”

Does Melania choose her own wardrobe, or is her lady-in-waiting completely tone-deaf?

Cases in point:

The coat emblazoned with “I don’t really care. Do you?” worn shortly after visiting a disaster area.

The snow-white pith helmet and safari outfit worn during her sub-Saharan Africa tour.

The Indiana Jones cosplay outfit worn during her interview with the Pyramids in the background.

Plus her evening gowns that look like shower curtains and her formal wear that looks like she’s going to her junior high prom.

FWIW wearing white clothing in poorer parts of the world was a deliberate choice of the well-to-do, as a way to flaunt their wealth and power. Poor people don’t have the time or money to keep white clothes clean and dust-free.

Another precedent the GOP can take away from all this is they don’t even have to bother feigning “concern” anymore when one of their own is accused of sexual harassment/assault. All they have to do is get loud and indignant, accuse the victim(s) of “smearing” a man’s “good name,” and say that if there’s not enough evidence to secure a criminal conviction then the matter isn’t even worth looking into.

I’m not so sanguine.

If the Democrats can take back the HoR, they can launch a major investigation via the House Judiciary Committee into Kavanaugh. While it may well prove impossible to remove him via trial in the US Senate, I think they could generate a good deal of heat - and outrage. And if it gets hot enough, and I mean really hot, the other SCOUTS Justices could well start putting pressure on Kavanaugh to resign; it’s bad optics, to say the least.

Beyond that (and I admit it’s only a slim possibility that Judge Drinky would resign) the next best thing to do is vote the GOP into electoral oblivion in 2020. Take the House, the Senate and the Presidency and immediately get to work on nullifying every single damn thing Trump has done and be public about it. Openly state, “Our goal is to nullify everything former President Trump has done and, in essence, reduce him - and his supporters - to a mere footnote in history”.

Fascist Portugal also fell without intervention from liberal democracies (Salazar’s Estado Novo).

Salazar’s regime covertly aided the Franco revolt, though Portugal was officially neutral in WW2.

With the advent of Portugal’s colonial wars, a million people fled Portugal unwilling to fight in its colonies (primarily to France) and another million fled unwilling to live under fascism (primarily to the USA).

Salazar had a stroke in 1968 and a replacement was appointed (he died in 1970). In the 1969 and 1973 their fascist party won every seat in the National Assembly.

Although his authoritarian replacement tried to bring in very modest liberal reforms, he had to expend all his political capital with the conservatives to get them, and they were abolished in 1974.

What ended fascism in Portugal was when it wanted to join the European Economic Community in 1980. The EEC placed requirements to liberalise trade and political participation.

It was actually trade that ended the Estado Novo regime.

For those who think Chief Justice John Roberts cares about his reputation or that of the Supreme Court, don’t hold your breath. Remember his first concern as a conservative is gaining and maintaining power.

Remember those judicial complaints forwarded to him about Brett Kavanaugh? About those:

washingtonpost.com

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has received more than a dozen judicial misconduct complaints in recent weeks against Brett M. Kavanaugh, who was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice Saturday, but has chosen for the time being not to refer them to a judicial panel for investigation.

A judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit — the court on which Kavanaugh serves — passed on to Roberts a string of complaints the court received starting three weeks ago, said four people familiar with the matter.

That judge, Karen LeCraft Henderson, had dismissed other complaints against Kavanaugh as frivolous, but she concluded that some were substantive enough that they should not be handled by Kavanaugh’s fellow judges in the D.C. Circuit.

Rick Santorum mansplains Kavanaugh anger to CNN women: ‘This is really more about the left’ (Raw Story, more at the link, with video of the exchange). And CNN of course, wanting to explain the complaints of rape and assault victims, millions of women and many men, of course turn to Rick Santorum on yet another Cletus Safari:

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum appeared on CNN Saturday afternoon, joining a panel of women.

Host Dana Bash opened the segment by talking about how Kavanaugh’s confirmation was “incredibly emotional” for women. She said she’d been getting texts from other women who were angry and sad about the development.

Santorum quickly cut her off to explain how the women protesting Kavanaugh were actually feeling.

“Candidly, I think it’s more than that,” Santorum said. “Look, this is, this is really more about the left in American than it is about women.”

Santorum then said there was “a last minute attempt to weaponize the #MeToo movement” to keep the accused rapist off the Supreme Court.

“They used it because the stakes were so high,” Santorum said. “The vast majority of [the protestors] are people who opposed Brett Kavanaugh from the beginning and saw an opportunity to stop him.”

Actually, it would not be visible at night.

The effect is called a superior mirage (Wikipedia explanation)

Such a mirage occurs when the air over the city is colder than the air above, causing the light rays from the distant object to bend along the curve of the earth.

Superior mirages often cause Chicago to be seen in Michigan.

Such mirages are also used in many YouTube videos to “prove” Earth is really flat, as the horizon according to their so-called “globe heads” standing on the ground is 2.9 miles.

My college son had to come to the house for something, so we talked about him making it in to do early voting. A couple of weeks ago, the campus had a voter registration drive, so I told him to make sure the students around him get out and vote as well, preferably early.

My youngest just registered to vote last week. He turned 18 on Aug. 24th, so at least 1 more vote for sanity in PA.

Interesting. So that makes me all the more lucky for getting the shot.

Thanks for the info.

JOBS!! JOBS!! JOBS!!!!! (going away)

Trump has been riding the economic wave created way back in the Obama years. Unemployment down, markets up, corporate profits up (thanks to the tax cut), but it won’t last forever. His tariffs on Chinese goods are not going to help the economy. Sooner or later, this house of cards is going to fall down, and I suspect it will be right in the middle of Trump’s term. Let’s see if he can brag about that!

I wouldn’t count on that. Though the tariffs have hit some sectors hard, like soybean farmers, they are still small beans relative to a $20 trillion economy. Increases in firings always precede a recession, usually by about a year, and so far initial unemployment claims remain at 49 year lows.

A superior mirage can also cause the distant object to appear upside down in the sky (the source of legends about flying ships amongst seamen).

For example, here is a superior mirage of Chicago taken from Michigan, where the city appears upside down in the sky (use the zoom feature at Flickr to view it better).

Another factor to consider is that the employment population ratio among prime age workers is still at only 79.3%, so even with a 3.7% unemployment rate there is still room to increase employment without overheating the economy. Back in the nineties, the ratio was over 80% for several years, and it briefly got over 80% before the Great Recession.

We are the majority. That’s why they want to make it a pita for us to vote whether we be college students, low income, or PoC. The GOP’s “majority” is a paper majority but the problem is not enough people in our coalition feel like participating like theirs do. Forever is a very long time. The unexpected can happen tomorrow and change everything. I realize during the period 1861-1912, Republicans held the presidency for 10 of the 12 terms, and for one of those 10 terms, a Democrat had a plurality of the votes but due to backroom deals related to Florida, lost the office. Let’s not assume the worst — and let’s work for the best. As long as the convention of states doesn’t successfully rewrite the Constitution, we can prevail. It is certainly possible that now that Trump is President, Roberts figures that we can have a permanent Republican majority and so he no longer cares about a legacy of doing what’s right, but instead doing what’s needed to entrench this majority.

I think the Supremes (especially Roberts and the liberals) want to remain legit. If they give all power to the admin, what’s the point of having a court? Trump and the Republicans will pay a price for kav, and I’m not sure he’s going to be able to save them.

Kavanaugh Confirmation Will Likely Lead to a Blue Tsunami in the House

I do not want to hear of a goddamn Blue Tsunami or even a Blue Wave.

That is just a rhetorical straw men setting up a series of RW counter talking points.

It is a series of hard-fought campaigns. Perhaps the Kavanaugh confirmation will make them less tough, but it is an uphill struggle to regain control of Congress to at least put some kinds of brakes on the GOP steamroller.

What is there to save them from when it would amount to giving GOP unlimited power and make them virtually untouchable to the point that it couldn’t be undone without a literal coup?

There are a lot of times I think we need a revolution really bad, but I also have no faith in a revolution actually happening, or in it being successful. Americans — especially white Americans — are lazy as hell, and if they have to choose between living in a fascist dystopia and missing an episode of “NCIS,” they’ll side with the fascists who allow them to watch TV. Besides, it won’t be very long before Trump starts telling the police to just open fire on protesters, and they won’t hesitate. And they won’t stop.

We’ve banked on the better angels of conservatives all too often for it to blow up in our faces when they demonstrate that ‘owning libs’ is the only virtue they ever see. We’ve seen the GOP go from Trump as candidate being a red line to ‘All Hail God-King Trump I’ because it gave them unlimited power and made the libs mad, therefore it had to be an objective good.

The “conservative” backlash may happen when enough of them realize that they need healthcare and sometimes abortion. The key word is may. It also may happen if a democratic house controls the budget and the red states all need money. The revolution may be shutting down the govt until one side blinks.

Excerpt:

“…I unfriended a couple people today for assuming that the Democrats are “feckless.”

No.

The Democrats still believe in old-fashioned democracy. You campaign aggressively. The people vote. Whoever gets the most votes wins. The winner is then responsible for governing wisely according to existing law.

The Republicans used to believe in that — back when Ike was president. They gave that up under Nixon. The Republicans now believe that it’s okay to lie, cheat, and steal elections, because winning is more important than following the rules.

A Republican I stopped talking to a long time ago once said, “If you’re not cheating, you’re not playing hard enough.” When winning becomes more important than the law, more important than ethics, more important than respecting the rights of your opponents — it’s no longer about winning, it’s about power. It’s the essence of corruption.

What we have seen — in the theft of elections, in voter-suppression, in vote-rigging, in election-hacking, in the shutdown of voting sites in Democratic districts, and most recently in the behavior of Mitch McConnell, a man who has single-handedly betrayed the Constitution of the United States … what we have seen is that the Republican party is no longer a political party, but a savage religious cult that encourages fear and hatred, cruelty and ugliness. The idea of playing fair disappeared from that mindset when Richard Nixon quietly taught Republican candidates how to smear their opponents, when Lee Atwater smeared Michael Dukakis, when Richard Mellon Scaife funded multiple malicious lawsuits against Bill Clinton, when Newt Gingrich wrote the notorious Gopac memo on how to demonize Democrats, when Katherine Harris purged Democratic voters from Florida’s rolls in 2000, when Karl Rove smeared John Kerry, and on and on and on.

And when called out — Republicans have said, “Well, Johnny did it too.”

That’s not an excuse. That’s a confession.”

They aren’t even doing that with even the popular parts of ACA that conservative voters like. They’re just getting them to tunnel vision focus on the ‘evil’ parts like the mandate so they ignore that they’re getting their pocket picked. It’s what happened in Kentucky when Bevin won in a laugher on the basis of taking away all of Kentuckians health care, despite the popularity of Kynect, the state-level ACA exchange. They didn’t care that Bevin basically destroyed their health care, they celebrated the destruction of the evil evil ACA and rode on destroying those evil evil Dems forever.

Also, just as an aside, no one can make good, solid choices based on anger and fear. This is what republicans do and how we got here. Look at the liberal stereotypes that have been fed to the public for as long as I can remember, and I’m 58. They play on fear and hate and while it may work, it’s also horribly destructive and stupid. We have to keep our feet planted firmly in real life and do the work. It’s not just elections, it’s really everything.

Someone once told me the beautiful thing about everything being a mess is that every good thing you do helps fix something. No one is coming to save us, we’re going to have to do more than march and protest, more than vote, more than we’ve had to do in recent history. See a need and work to meet it, that’s really what change is about.

i ran somewhere between 20 and 21 miles.
i actually run by time, which was 200 minutes - 3:20

when training for a marathon you never have to run more than 20 miles
if you can run 20, you can run 26
you do have to do it a couple of times though

first time in 5 years so this is a big achievement for me

the first 16 miles were smooth and excellent
the last four were “ugly” — no style or grace, ragged breathing, muscles starting to object… (it was 82 degrees)
no walking and the pace didnt degrade

mrs dm took me for pancakes and eggs
now a nap
then beer
then pasta

do something today to make yourself proud

In other news, Tom Nichols flounces from the GOP.

But whatever my concerns about liberals, the true authoritarian muscle is now being flexed by the GOP, in a kind of buzzy, steroidal McCarthyism that lacks even anti-communism as a central organizing principle. The Republican Party, which controls all three branches of government and yet is addicted to whining about its own victimhood, is now the party of situational ethics and moral relativism in the name of winning at all costs.

So, I’m out. The Trumpers and the hucksters and the consultants and the hangers-on, like a colony of bees who exist only to sting and die, have swarmed together in a dangerous but suicidal cloud, and when that mindless hive finally extinguishes itself in a blaze of venom, there will be nothing left.

Not to worry, though - he still hates us.

The land of contrasts. Lost of good growing happens around there. The word means ‘grape’. It’s the land of the United Farm Workers. It also made Chuck Johnson, or housed it for a while. I went there to see a play in which a boyfriend’s older brother acted in drag, at Fresno State. He was a racist and a sexist, and it was a play about the Marx Brothers, so lots of laughs all around. He later got work in Hollywood, in a couple of commercials, so it was a ‘career’ for a couple of years.

It’s a survival hierarchy… survival of the self, survival of the clan, survival of the species. Most of us have at least evolved to survival of the clan and developed a much broader meaning of clan than we used to.

From an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense. Competition for limited resources creates a hardwired fear of others. Takes at least 20 or 30 thousand years to get over that.

I have precious little faith in any sort of grand breakthrough anymore. I’m voting and speaking out because it needs to be said, but I’ve just been resigned to fatalism that this is what we are now, this is what we will be for the near- and long-term future.

Serious question here, I’m honestly not trying to be snarky, Citizen K: You say you’re voting and speaking out ‘because it needs to be said’, but what are you saying and where? All I’ve seen here for months is repetitive despair. I struggle with depression too, I try to be sympathetic, but I lose patience with the steady stream of sodden gloom. From one depressive to another, does posting this running threnody give you some relief? Are you asking for help or seeking company in misery? Does it lighten your mood or your load temporarily? If you voice the despair and get an answer does it reassure you that someone is listening?

As a reader, I’m at the point where I roll my eyes and skim past your posts, having heard it all before. As a fellow lizard, I still worry and wonder whether you have resources IRL to help keep your fingers on the rope.

(And if I’m wrong, then I get to celebrate harder than most, ‘cause I expected less than most.)

Honestly, if the Russians tweaked the results to even an obvious set-up (8 billion votes for Republicans, none for Democrats), the press would shrug and say, “Well, we have to accept it.” And most of the rest of the country would, too.

Here’s a news item from last month that I totally missed until perusing the exceptional Half Hearted Dude music blog just now:

“Not really a music death, and yet very much so: Peggy Sue Perron of the Buddy Holly song has died at 78. Originally Holly was going to name the song Cindy Lou, after his niece. But drummer Jerry Allison petitioned his friend to change the name in order to impress his girl, Peggy Sue, who had just broken up with him. It worked: Jerry and Peggy Sue went on to get married in 1958 (just before his death, Holly wrote and [recorded] a song called Peggy Sue Got Married, which was released posthumously). They divorced, and Peggy Sue moved to California, got married again, and had kids.”

Tom Nichols’ flounce is “both sides” horseshit that chooses to forget the continuity of bad behavior between the first time he left the GOP and the second, all of which is just an elaboration of existing bad behavior that created a bullshit impeachment and fabricated justification for a war. It follows the standard form by exaggerating the threat of the Democratic Party such that the Republicans have only just become the hazard, and lays everything at the feet of Trumpian vulgarity (rather than procedural fuckery and grossly antidemocratic ideological groups forming the base).

He’ll do well on the David Brooks and his team of David Brooks impersonator circuit, along with the other “Never Trumpers” who are simply waiting for an authoritarian that appeals to their highbrow aesthetic.

I’ve been trying to nail jello to the wall with Republicans all weekend. They tend to balk at simple questions that would force them to accept that Kavanaugh wasn’t some kind of victim.

Two of them dropped out at the simple question of whether, if Ford’s accusations were true, Kavanaugh should be confirmed. They went into handwaving and other avoidant behaviors to not take a position.

The other said that, No, Kavanaugh should not be confirmed if it were true, but then started the handwaving and avoidant dancing when asked if he felt that the investigation was sufficient to really address the question.

When they sense they’re being led away from victimhood, they balk.

Baby steps, man. Baby steps. One of my least-favorite things about “my side” is the degree to which tentative refugees from the GOP cult — and I think it’s crucial to consider it a for-real, no-shit cult — are actively and sometimes viciously discouraged.

It’s extremely rare and difficult for cult members to leave a cult on their own volition. They will often still cling to certain practices or beliefs of the cult, even as they are actively trying to extricate themselves from it. Cults exist because they are effective at seducing and controlling their members. Most cults don’t even realize they’re cults.

When someone like Tom Nichols, or Rick Wilson, or Max Boot, or Jennifer Rubin seems to say, “ok, I’ve had enough of this shit - this far, but no farther”, the wrongest possible way to react to that is to immediately take them to task for dumb shit they thought 15 minutes ago.

The correct thing to do is focus on the things you can readily agree about, and build from there. No lasting relationship has ever started with contention.

The problem is those people generally leave the cult not because they have decided that it’s not for them, or that the ideology it preaches is wrong, but because they don’t like being associated with the current leadership. They are generally looking for a reason, any reason, to overlook their opposition to that leadership in order to rejoin the cult. I can already tell you that, between now and Nov 2020, Nichols will have gotten over his personal hatred of Donald Trump and be back to “Vote Republican to keep those evil Democrats from taking back the White House!”

Do you remember what caused John Cole to start deciding the GOP was wrong? It was the Terri Schiavo case. If you read about it, though, that case didn’t suddenly make him decide he was a Democrat. What that case did do, though, was give enough of an opening for him to start seeing, with constant nagging from DougJ and others, that other things the GOP was doing were not actually great.

Well first, Hitler tolerated Stalin for 3 years and Stalin was prepared to keep tolerating Hitler until Operation Barbarossa ended that temporary alliance. That’s a more apt analogy to what is being proposed, with both sides acknowledging openly that they hate the other and will betray them if given an opportunity. Nichols hasn’t decided that he was wrong, he’s decided he hates being associated with Donald Trump. If he decides that he hates Trump less than he hates us, then we’re back at Square Fucking One, aren’t we?

Okay, here’s my $.02 to address, in general, all the maximum-doomer scenarios. First:

1) If 100% of US elections were hopelessly and utterly compromised, why did Dems win so many of them, esp. the Senate race in Ala-frigging-bama?

2) Remember the first significant post-trump electoral wins, i.e. the Virginia elections last year? GOPer turnout was higher than it had been when McDonnell won back in 2009, but they lost due to the massive increase in Dem turnout.

3) Even Sarah Kendzior - hardly the sunny optimist by anyone’s standards - says that overwhelming turnout is the only way to overcome all the various forms of voter suppression, gerrymandering, and Russian fuckery. And she still advises fighting even when a loss looks almost certain.

I don’t know, are we? I keep getting mixed messages, one moment assured we’re headed for at least a House majority next year, the next told that we’re desperate for votes and we need to work harder.

Here’s a suggestion: Let Tom Nichols decide for himself where he stands and let him make the first effort to bridge the divide. Don’t tear into him for past “sins,” but don’t act as though we’re willing to just ignore the past to get his vote.

No matter where we are, everyone must fight. You can’t win if you don’t.

Part of Democrat’s problem is that too many people forgot that you have to fight even if you win. That also meant that too many people never learned that lesson.

re: #473 CleverToad

Column A, Column B. Being able to get things off my chest in an outlet keeps me from being swallowed up, while knowing I’m not totally fucking crazy keeps me from just shutting down at this point. I just…

I’ve tried to help out. I’ve tried to do outreach and shit, tried to tackle things on a personal level. The amount of apathy to outright contempt I experience in response, either from ardent conservatives to ‘Bern It Down’ would-be progressives, the sheer lack of any accountability and rapid erosion of any sort of norms, and just the acceptance of wanton cruelty as being worth it just for cruelty’s sake has worn my soul to the nub. I’ve seen people my age or far younger willingly give themselves to the comfort of ‘ironic hate’, including folks I thought I was good friends with. I’ve spent sleepless nights worrying about my parents when they consider going out of the country, wondering if they’ll be let back in because their name and complexion is just a bit too Hispanic-looking.

I fucking want to believe. I want to believe there’s a goddamn light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how hard it might be to claw it out. I keep seeing that light fading more and more and believing that hate really is goddamn all powerful. It hurts, it fucking is painful, as someone who actually has basic empathy but with precious little resources to either act on it past a personal level or get some actual help for these moments where everything just feels like it’s going to swallow up.

I keep vacillating between incoherent rage and despondence because I care about this shit but feel too helpless when it seems like it amounts to less than nothing, that the very process of acting against this hate just makes it more powerful.
