re: #2 Skip Intro

Fluctuating by what amounts to the sampling error is commonly misinterpreted.

Also, the headline is misleading I think. “Up” can be misconstrued as a verb, as in change, rather that just state, as in result of a (small) sample.

Now, the need to create heat, bandwagon reinforcement, etc. is real. But I propose that on any given day there is in reality very little change in leanings from the previous day.

Politics in America has become very much dominated by religious angst, with a rather sharp divide between fundamentalist Christians and the nones/ecumenically-minded.

One of the things to watch in coming years is how this works out in the communities that self-identify as minority, as several such communities have been rather tied to their religious traditions.

The ugliness that Trump embodies didn’t come from nowhere. It was always lurking in the shadows of American politics, when it wasn’t in the daylight (as it was with George Wallace, etc.)

Yet as the old die off and the young become middle-aged, the character of parties and elections change.

I think there is a reckoning to be had, not just in the Republican party, but in the Democratic party, over very deep ideological divides.

There is a veeeeery long history in this country of progressive marches and gatherings being targeted with lethal government or government approved violence. Designating gatherings of sexual assault survivors as “mobs” is a big step towards the sort of massacres you used to see in the late 19th and early 20th century when Pinkertons and national guard troops were called in to shoot strikers and break up demonstrations.

This happened right here in Greensboro not all that long ago...and KKK and Nazis who murdered people in broad daylight on city streets were never convicted and the city refused to pay out when the Greensboro PD was found to be complicit in the ambush.

When Avenatti stepped into the Kavanaugh circus I warned about “noise” interfering with the signal.

Yet I do not believe that Kavanaugh getting confirmed was caused by Avenatti.

Kavanaugh, like with the blocking of Obama’s nominee, was all about the religious right flexing its muscle in the Republican party.

At the last Southern Baptist Convention convention (sounds redundant) Pence bragged about this very thing.

Yes, and this time it’s not the Protestant religious right — he was put up for the job by fundamentalist Catholics.

I certainly don’t think Avenatti helped things, but turning him into a scapegoat is cheap and avoids the real lesson which is that Republicans are utterly irredeemable trash.

I’m starting to think the religious angst is just a tool, to be used like the babbies in the womb, which the top of one side of the ideological divide doesn’t care about either. (Does this need to be unpacked?) Yep, both parties use that tool. One much more than the other.

The one in which I live is shedding believers almost as quickly as the rest of America. Plus, their religious tradition (Mexican Catholic) includes a separation of church and state that includes a ban on clerical dress on the streets.

Speaking of the world at large, it appears as if Brazil wants to play footsies with an authoritarian right-wing society, again:

Right-winger leads Brazil election, heading for run-off

[…]

Bolsonaro, a former Army captain who praises dictatorships and vows a brutal crackdown on crime and graft, surged in recent opinion polls on a wave of antipathy toward Haddad’s Workers Party, whose leader is in jail for after a corruption conviction.

[…]

In the most polarized election since the end of military rule in 1985, Bolsonaro is backed by a group of retired generals who have criticized the 2003-2016 Workers Party governments and publicly advocate military intervention if corruption continues.

Apparently, according to GG, what makes a demagogue a “real” fascists has nothing to do with said demagogue’s own beliefs/actions but only if there is a remnant functioning resistance.

Think about it.

That’s like saying an attempted murderer is not a murderer because the victim just happened to live next to a surgeon who was able to keep the victim alive until more medical help is available.

The rapid progress in the wake of the Industrial Era, coupled with the suddenly change of the world stage with various revolutions and civil wars, left a world that had a lot of major new players who were eager to put their mark on the future. Couple that with old empires that wished to keep the young upstarts in line and you had a powder keg waiting to explode. Telegraphs, telephones, steam ships, railroads, and automobiles were shrinking the world at a pace that had never been seen.

It’s not a 1-to-1 resemblance, but there’s enough similarity that you can hum along without missing too many notes.

But what is the future? And maybe they may not be able to stop it but they will be able to hinder it. I dunno. As someone who has studied 20th century history extensively, it feels like a lot of the same mistakes are being made here. My generation won’t be the one to save us. I have more hope for my niece’s.

History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes. The mistakes look the same, but at a higher-tech-level. The communication, the democratization of information, the realizations that all the various peoples have more in common than different, that all the genders have more in common than different—it’s forcing the power-hungry to panic in their search for new tools. They’re trying the new Trump model of leader, but finding it too difficult to keep in control. They thought he could relate to the generations, because he can tweet, but they can’t shut him up without blowing a fuse, or whatever they call it these days.

I really hope so. I just hope this is all but a hiccup to the true promises of the 21st century which I think is a world where we connect more with each other than ever before but that same technology has allowed the reactionaries to communicate too i.e. Hitler’s use of cinema and radio.

re: #48 Citizen K

I saw your non-private-tagged response on the last thread, and here’s what I would’ve said had that thread continued:

You say you respect Sarah Kendzior’s views and analysis, so why not the advice she offers here?

You said your past attempts to help didn’t work, but have you truly exhausted everything you could realistically do? I don’t think so, based on your posts here. Do you follow @celeste_pewter? Have you tried all (or even any) of the things she suggests? Even if I take you at your word - that everyone within your immediate sphere of influence is a hate-filled GOPer, hopeless Berner, or suffering from terminal indifference - that still leaves, oh, tens of millions of other American voters you could find a way to reach through other means (e.g. postcard campaigns). Or, if you don’t feel comfortable with even that limited degree of direct communication, see if there’s something else you could volunteer to do for a campaign (e.g. data entry).

Or to quote Sarah Kendzior again:

“How do you maintain hope?” an audience member asked me at the end of the talk. This is another question I get asked everywhere I go. I told her that I don’t believe in hope and I don’t believe in hopelessness; I believe in compassion and pragmatism.

So find something compassionate or pragmatic to do.

FWIW, I do think being falsely accused of sexual assault is pretty damn awful but I don’t think Kavanaugh was falsely accused and I don’t think you can act like he was completely cleared either like Stephens and the other right wingers are acting like. And it would be fucking nice if these people who now claim they’re all about due process would show immigrants that same respect. Many of whom are merely said to be rapists by Trump without any proof.

Listening to people like the Ohio Dems (the video is now up on the website) is the antidote to hopeless feeling. Avenatti got a standing ovation in Cincinnati at the UAW meeting Saturday Night. And from Twitter, I get bits and pieces of activity, people are working their hearts out to get out the vote and getting good results. And the video is great.
Also, If your family is not receptive, look for ally groups in your area-NAACP, NOW, whatever is available and go to the meetings. Minorities-religious, sexual, ethnic-have found refuge in the Church in times of sorrow, a place where friends and family can gather and celebrate. While I no longer go regularly for a lot of reasons, when I have gone I have found it a source of solace and even joy at times.

It’s why I expect to see Manchin’s lead evaporate after this week. Democrats are going to hate him for the vote and Republicans are not going to suddenly flood into his ranks to make up for the loss. They want a Republican, they want Mitch McConnell, and they’re not going to get that if Joe is Vote 51 in a Senate Dem majority.

I disagree. It’s too bad that liberals always have to blame and pick on other liberals when things go bad. Avenatti is trying which is more than many prominent Democrats do. This evening, SpaceX is set to launch a used Falcon 9 rocket from California, a flight that will be followed by one of the company’s signature rocket landings. But this time around, SpaceX will attempt to land the vehicle on a concrete landing pad near the launch site — not a drone ship in the ocean. If successful, it’ll be the first time that the company does a ground landing on the West Coast.

Note the head honcho didn’t ask men to fast from social media. The leaders, all male of course, will continue on social media.

This bit has gotten some attention in Mormon circles, but hasn’t had any room to breath in the larger American landscape as we’re all distracted by Trump madness.

Let me guess! Mormon Women were ordered off the internet all of last week so they wouldn’t post anything supporting Dr. Ford.

For a truly depressing read on what America can expect for the next couple of generations…

theatlantic.com
The Supreme Court Is Headed Back to the 19th Century
The justices again appear poised to pursue a purely theoretical liberty at the expense of the lives of people of color.

The justices did not resurrect Dred Scott v. Sandford’s antebellum declaration that a black man had no rights that a white man was bound to respect. Rather, they carefully framed their arguments in terms of limited government and individual liberty, writing opinion after opinion that allowed the white South to create an oppressive society in which black Americans had almost no rights at all. Their commitment to freedom in the abstract, and only in the abstract, allowed a brutal despotism to take root in Southern soil.

The conservative majority on the Supreme Court today is similarly blinded by a commitment to liberty in theory that ignores the reality of how Americans’ lives are actually lived. Like the Supreme Court of that era, the conservatives on the Court today are opposed to discrimination in principle, and indifferent to it in practice.

(snip)

The Roberts Court is poised to shape American society in Trump’s image for decades to come. All three branches of the federal government are now committed to the Trump agenda: the restoration of America’s traditional racial, religious, and gender hierarchies; the enrichment of party patrons; the unencumbered pursuit of corporate profit; the impoverishment and disenfranchisement of the rival party’s constituencies; and the protection of the president and his allies from prosecution by any means available. Not since the end of Reconstruction has the U.S. government been so firmly committed to a single, coherent program uniting a politics of ethnonationalism with unfettered corporate power. As with Redemption, as the end of Reconstruction is known, the consequences could last for generations.

The lesson of the post-Reconstruction Supreme Court is that a determined Court majority can prove stubbornly resistant to short-term swings of political fortune. Even if Democrats win the next election cycle, and the one after that, an enduring conservative majority on the Supreme Court will have the power to shatter any hard-won liberal legislative victory on the anvil of judicial review. It will be able to reverse decades-old precedents that secure fundamental rights. It will further entrench the rules of a society in which justice skews toward the wealthy, and the lives of those without means can be destroyed by a chance encounter with law enforcement. It will do all these things and more in the name of a purely theoretical freedom, which most Americans will never be able to afford to experience.

I disagree. It’s too bad that liberals always have to blame and pick on other liberals when things go bad. Avenatti is trying which is more than many prominent Democrats do. Perhaps we should put the blame on Manchin who actually voted for Kavanaugh instead of taking out our anger on Avenatti who tried to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

I’m putting the blame on the fucking Purity Ponies of 2016. “Hillary’s not liberal enough wah wah wah… I’m voting for Jill Stein, I’m not voting, I’m writing in Bernie, that’ll send a message”.

And when I told them the Court is what’s at stake, isn’t a not-liberal-enough Dem better than a right winger who’ll pack the courts with Federalist Society types…. “don’t try to scare me, it’s my conscience, Hillary hasn’t earned my vote”….

There will need to be a bill to increase the size of the court, which will require a cloture vote. So, they’ll have to, most likely, do away with cloture.

I still think this is a risky play because if the next cycle the GOP takes control of both Houses and wins the presidency, they’ll likely add more. Then the court becomes a joke with 20 some justices

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned here that I walked into the voting booth in 2016 not knowing what I was going to do. I thought about voting for Clinton, for Johnson, and just leaving it blank - I definitely wasn’t voting for Trump. And being in California, I knew I could under vote or vote third party, it wasn’t close here. I eventually marked the ballot for Clinton but I wasn’t really happy about. MSNBC I’d call liberal — mostly. Except for Chuck Todd and Joe Scarborough. The head of the news division (Andrew Lack) is a Trumper, and would like nothing better than to neuter that liberal slant, but Rachel and Lawrence’s ratings have made that impossible. The minute he can, though…

CNN is super-corporate. Time-Warner’s cable and internet business is WAY more important to them than their piddly little news channel, and the suits at the home office care a lot more about catering to the head of the FCC than to their viewers.

re: #139 The Vicious Babushka

Climate change coming at you like==>

I already debunked this video yesterday.

a) It is not Indonesia, it is the Japanese tsunami from 2011.
b) It was not caused by climate change, it was caused by an earthquake.

It is being recycled as an “Indonesian tsunami” when all the writing in the video is Japanese and the cars are on the wrong side of the road.
