This is another way of phrasing “the Interpol president has fallen out of favor with the Chairman of the Party, Xi Jinping.”

The CCP has been all about making examples of people lately. The actress Fan Bingbing went missing for awhile after she was accused of tax fraud. Eventually she confessed to signing “yin-yang” contracts — one contract for her real pay and another with a lower amount to be filed with the government — and had to pay whopping penalties in order to stay out of prison. The Interpol dude may have taken bribes, but if he had been in the pro-Xi faction, he probably could have skated by with just a warning to cut it out.

I read a few days ago that Meng had lost his seat on some Party committee in China back in April, a harbinger of even worse things to come.

The Chinese guy was the “president” of Interpol, but it seems like it was only a figurehead position. The people under him handle the day-to-day operations, Interpol is still chugging away.

When you think “Nebraska Senator,” the name that tends to come to mind is the state’s junior US senator, Ben Sasse, who made a passionate speech about how insulting Donald Trump was to Christine Blasey Ford last week, then went right ahead and confirmed Brett Kavanaugh. Sasse is reasonably good at getting headlines; back in 2014, he proposed moving the US capitol to Nebraska, because “in touch with the people.” He’s a practical kind of guy. But unless you live in or near Nebraska, we bet the name of the state’s senior US senator (also a Republican, surprise!), Deb Fischer, didn’t spring right to mind. She’s “senior” only by two years, having first been elected to the Senate in 2012, and generally not all that visible in the national news. And now that Nebraska farmers — and manufacturers, even! — are getting burned big time by Donald Trump’s trade wars, Deb Fischer might just be vulnerable to being upset by an upstart Democrat, Lincoln city council member Jane Raybould, who’s been hammering Trump — and Fischer — on how bad the tariffs have been bad for Nebraska. In a state where only a third of voters are registered as Democrats, it’s just possible this is the year Raybould could manage a big upset, because while Nebraska went big for Trump in 2016, two years later his policies are bringing the state pain.

Report: Mike Pence’s Gutless Political Stunt At A Colts Game Last Year Was Expensive (Deadspin, more at the link).

Of course we knew that, but they bring the receipts in the article:

According to the newly released — and heavily redacted — documents, the hotel rooms for Pence’s security team totaled $64,637.88, split between nine different properties, with the heftiest bill of $25,151 at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown. A heavily redacted document titled “LRC Air/Rail Detail Report by Project Code” with a “report period” of Oct. 7 through Oct. 9 has an amount at the bottom of $8,877.91, presumably for certain travel expenses. Temporary walkways deployed in downtown Indianapolis add another $2,368.

The dates on the documents lend further credence to the notion this was a hastily planned stunt and not, as a Pence aide claimed to CNN, an event planned “for weeks” so that the vice president could watch a ceremony honoring former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. The walkways, rented from an event company based out of Cincinnati, were ordered only the Friday before the game and a lodging addendum for the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Airport was signed just three days before the game.

Facebook has held a company “town hall” meeting with employees to try and quell outrage after a senior executive attended the recent Senate hearing of US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg were both in attendance.

Last week Joel Kaplan, the company’s policy chief, was visibly seated behind Kavanaugh, Trump’s embattled nominee for the US Supreme Court, as the judge angrily defended himself against allegations of sexual misconduct by multiple women.

Kaplan and Kavanaugh are friends, having worked together in the Bush administration, and he was there in a personal capacity — but his appearance has enraged employees, and company leadership screwed up its initial response.

In particular, the decline in support for the GOP is at record lows, and that was before the Kavanaugh nonsense.

While hard-core conservatives are likely to dig in, there continues to be fewer of them.

Again I was talking pre 1976. When he was recruited to run for governor of Cali after a nice speech he gave for Goldwater. He was unqualified in 1966. He won but that’s beside the point. I don’t care for her music but she strikes me as a very smart musician who tightly controls her image and career. Glad that she’s finally speaking out. Here’s something crazy. Virginia had more people in 1790 than Wyoming does now. But yes the gap between states has grown considerably. Even among the larger states. California has 11 million more people than Texas which is probably how Charlie Kirk was able to claim that CA has more people in poverty than Texas.

The fact is the system we have now favors what what was considered a medium sized state in 1790 (Connecticut).

um… even before he ran for CA gov, he was an experienced activist with a whole team of policy advisers whose policy advice he’d been able to understand, remember and articulate.

And as governor, his record clearly shows that he understood about the need for his policies to reflect his constituency, he didn’t single-mindedly pursue his own ideological preferences. He incrementally shifted policy in his preferred direction, after first generating sufficient public opinion to make those shifts not outrageously controversial.

Love him or hate him, he wasn’t “just another celebrity with an opinion”. And he was a far better governor than he was President… mostly because he was answerable to a better constituency.

In the 1976 election, Gerald Ford won the California primary, and the general election. Because California in those days was a moderate state, a swing state.

Anyhow, I think there’s something to density and vote correlation. I had a bunch of townhouses that I had to canvass Saturday and my canvassing partner and I both theorized that people in these type of developments are more likely to be Democratic since they’re forced to acknowledge their neighbors and interact with them. Density allows us to see our collective humanity more than sparsely populated. It’s easy to see why the myth of the rugged individual took off in places with big land masses but not as many people. I’m no Marxist but there’s a reason why he predicted Marxist revolution would start in the urban industrial centers. He was wrong- it was Russia but on paper, he got it.

The irony for me is the right is constantly accusing liberals in living in bubbles but in my observations, it’s definitely conservatives who do. Towns and counties whose demographics have really remained unchanged since the first settlers and emigrants. I’ve seen my very home region of NOVA transform a lot and it’s been for the better because of diversity. New people, new ideas, new businesses, etc.

A lot of our rur rural dwellers are still sold on the notion that they are some sort of Jeffersonian gentlemen farmers.

That combined with people still living the Industrial Revolution where they need a job at the factory, mill, or mine to better themselves. What I think we should do is have affordable education in places like the Rust Belt and rural America. I don’t know if Bernie’s free tuition at all is the solution but definitely something like affordable and convenient community college would be reasonable. Unfortunately the first thing many Republican executives touch now when they cut the budget is education. More trade schools would be good too.

I know it was. I hate to say it but I wonder if a large part of why that was ignored was because of who she was. She had absolutely the right idea. Much more so than Sanders who I think naively thinks 4 year education tuition free education is the solution. Now I’m not totally opposed to finding ways to make tuition more affordable but at the same time, I found it unrealistic and a square peg for a much more complicated issue.

I believe it has its origins in Washington Irving of Sleepy Hallow fame. Plus and understandably so, Italian-Americans looking for a way to defend themselves against Nattivism in the mid to late 19th century. Columbus was from Genoa if you recall. I dunno. Just seems silly to celebrate him. If you want to celebrate all explorers, I’d probably be more amiable to that but I believe in celebrating the people who lived here for generations who too often are either forgotten by history or who are props but not actors in it.

Today it’s demographic changes. Those of us in the cities or even aprts of suburbia have have diversity our entire lives. Need to change the title on the meme to reflect the actual location, but the metaphor is spot on.

I agree. It’s not a big deal. I was more focused on the terror of the video, and that certainly must reflect the feelings of anyone faced with a tsunami. But then I realized that it was the Tohoku region of Japan in the description. As you say, it makes its point.

They have become a near-daily disappointment. We have another ‘public radio station’ to the left of NPR, but they’re Berniebros. More music is what I listen to. There’s always often an upside.
