It’s not a bad song. In fact, it’s pretty good. But then there are songs, simple as they might be, like this one set in a jukebox in Baton Rouge in 1967, that live in my soul to this moment. Enjoy:

This is another way of phrasing “the Interpol president has fallen out of favor with the Chairman of the Party, Xi Jinping.”

The CCP has been all about making examples of people lately. The actress Fan Bingbing went missing for awhile after she was accused of tax fraud. Eventually she confessed to signing “yin-yang” contracts — one contract for her real pay and another with a lower amount to be filed with the government — and had to pay whopping penalties in order to stay out of prison. The Interpol dude may have taken bribes, but if he had been in the pro-Xi faction, he probably could have skated by with just a warning to cut it out.

I read a few days ago that Meng had lost his seat on some Party committee in China back in April, a harbinger of even worse things to come.

It’s been a developing story the past day. I think most Americans don’t pay attention to these things, and Trump probably rather have Interpol just go away so his criminal friends don’t have to worry about being caught.

Whether to trust the Chinese government on this story is another question. I wonder if the bribe was a set up.

Climate change coming at you like==>

I already debunked this video yesterday.

a) It is not Indonesia, it is the Japanese tsunami from 2011.
b) It was not caused by climate change, it was caused by an earthquake.

It is being recycled as an “Indonesian tsunami” when all the writing in the video is Japanese and the cars are on the wrong side of the road.

The Chinese guy was the “president” of Interpol, but it seems like it was only a figurehead position. The people under him handle the day-to-day operations, Interpol is still chugging away.

So what analogy seems to work best: we are on the cusp of August 1914 or we are headed to September 1939… Disaster awaits us worldwide and this time America will not be representing the good guys or truth and justice.

Seems like 1914 would be closer to the modern situation — where some apparently small outrage triggers a global conflagration because the world order is in the midst of chaos.

Well, you’ve got the spirit of revanche fueling a lot of the tension, but Russia doesn’t swing nearly the weight in 2018 that France did in 1914, and there’s no equivalent of the Anglo-German Naval Arms Race….

Well, the Ostrogoths continued pretending to be Kings of Rome, but that only lasted for a little while until world events passed them by.

In the same way, the current cohort of Republicans and their Trumpian enablers will crow about how great America is long after our influence in the world shrinks noticeably.

Nebraska Democrat Lady Just Might Ride Trump’s Trade Wars Into US Senate (Goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

When you think “Nebraska Senator,” the name that tends to come to mind is the state’s junior US senator, Ben Sasse, who made a passionate speech about how insulting Donald Trump was to Christine Blasey Ford last week, then went right ahead and confirmed Brett Kavanaugh. Sasse is reasonably good at getting headlines; back in 2014, he proposed moving the US capitol to Nebraska, because “in touch with the people.” He’s a practical kind of guy. But unless you live in or near Nebraska, we bet the name of the state’s senior US senator (also a Republican, surprise!), Deb Fischer, didn’t spring right to mind. She’s “senior” only by two years, having first been elected to the Senate in 2012, and generally not all that visible in the national news. And now that Nebraska farmers — and manufacturers, even! — are getting burned big time by Donald Trump’s trade wars, Deb Fischer might just be vulnerable to being upset by an upstart Democrat, Lincoln city council member Jane Raybould, who’s been hammering Trump — and Fischer — on how bad the tariffs have been bad for Nebraska. In a state where only a third of voters are registered as Democrats, it’s just possible this is the year Raybould could manage a big upset, because while Nebraska went big for Trump in 2016, two years later his policies are bringing the state pain.

She lost the neo-Nazi vote. I took one for the team so you won’t have to by reading this tripe.

Headline at the top of Breitbart (I ain’t putting a link here to them):

Taylor Swift Smears Marsha Blackburn in Hackneyed Endorsement of Tennessee Senate Democrat Phil Bredesen

Swift’s endorsement of Democratic candidates will come as a surprise to her fans, some of whom believed she was secretly a Republican or someone with conservative and libertarian leanings. However, she has previously spoken up on issues such as LGBT rights and even donated to the gun control campaign “March for Our Lives.”

Many people also suspected she voted for Donald Trump after she repeatedly refused to denounce him while declining to comment on who she voted for during the 2016 presidential election. Last year, an editorial by The Guardian even described her as “an envoy for Trump’s values.”

About that Guardian article: It says no such thing. I guarantee you Deadbart’s fans won’t actually go read it.

theguardian.com

It says she is perceived as a Republican (despite being apolitical during her career) because she started as a Country and Western singer (because of course no liberals listen to C&W - wait, I know a whole bunch of us who do), and because she’s wealthy (because apparently there’s no such thing as a wealthy liberal).

The Guardian also notes that after Barack Obama was elected she was happy about that (doesn’t really sound like a Republican voter there).

Report: Mike Pence’s Gutless Political Stunt At A Colts Game Last Year Was Expensive (Deadspin, more at the link).

Of course we knew that, but they bring the receipts in the article:

According to the newly released — and heavily redacted — documents, the hotel rooms for Pence’s security team totaled $64,637.88, split between nine different properties, with the heftiest bill of $25,151 at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown. A heavily redacted document titled “LRC Air/Rail Detail Report by Project Code” with a “report period” of Oct. 7 through Oct. 9 has an amount at the bottom of $8,877.91, presumably for certain travel expenses. Temporary walkways deployed in downtown Indianapolis add another $2,368.

The dates on the documents lend further credence to the notion this was a hastily planned stunt and not, as a Pence aide claimed to CNN, an event planned “for weeks” so that the vice president could watch a ceremony honoring former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. The walkways, rented from an event company based out of Cincinnati, were ordered only the Friday before the game and a lodging addendum for the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Airport was signed just three days before the game.

Cheyenne NWS has this up:

Did it rain at your house today? Summer rainfall in Southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle tends to be more scattered in coverage, with significant rain at one location, and little or none just a few miles away. We need your assistance in documenting these weather patterns!

CoCoRaHS (The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network), Colorado State University’s citizen rainfall network is looking for volunteers to measure precipitation in their own backyards and report their observations via the Internet (cocorahs.org). It’s simple and only takes five minutes a day! With over 10,000 volunteers reporting every day in every state, CoCoRaHS measurements are used for important daily and long-term decision-making on drought and water supply for agricultural, recreation, utility providers, resource managers, teachers, scientists and homeowners. Organizations like the National Weather Service use CoCoRaHS data on a daily basis.

Mark Zuckerberg held a meeting to try and calm Facebook employee outrage after an exec attended the Kavanaugh hearing (Business Insider, more at the link):

Facebook has held a company “town hall” meeting with employees to try and quell outrage after a senior executive attended the recent Senate hearing of US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg were both in attendance.

Last week Joel Kaplan, the company’s policy chief, was visibly seated behind Kavanaugh, Trump’s embattled nominee for the US Supreme Court, as the judge angrily defended himself against allegations of sexual misconduct by multiple women.

Kaplan and Kavanaugh are friends, having worked together in the Bush administration, and he was there in a personal capacity — but his appearance has enraged employees, and company leadership screwed up its initial response.

An interesting graphical breakdown of past elections and potential future turnout.

Chaos Continues (Mehlman Castagnetti)

This is a PDF with graphics showing the GOP has been bleeding both women and minorities for a long time. As has been noted in the past, the GOP has become older, more male, less diverse, and less educated for a couple decades. They predict this will only continue.

In particular, the decline in support for the GOP is at record lows, and that was before the Kavanaugh nonsense.

While hard-core conservatives are likely to dig in, there continues to be fewer of them.

But, I gotta tell you, folks, I look at your replies, I look at history, I look at the elections, and I’m skeptical.

Any talk of a “Blue Wave” distresses me, we need to look at the election as a series of hard-fought campaigns to win back a majority in an electoral system that is gerrymandered and skewered in favor of the GOP.

We will not have WW3 until a Democrat is President.

At least President Reagan had experience first before running for President (state governor, union president even if he later worked to undermine unions).

There is certainly a difference between Kanye “repeal the XIII Amendment” West and Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift actually gave a decent explanation why she wants to vote the way she is, and why she’s urging others to do the same.

And that was his selling point: he knew that a lot of Americans were fed up with politicians and politics as usual. So he branded himself as the anti-politician, the ultimate outsider.

That is what allowed him to get away with things that would have derailed the campaign or even the career of any professional politician, and left even his own party gaping in disbelief.

Susan Collins’s Brett Kavanaugh Speech Was the Final Nail in the Coffin for Her Political Identity (Charles Pierce at Esquire, more at the link):

The Great State O’Maine has one great senator, and it’s not Susan Collins. It’s independent Angus King, who was fed up with the nomination process afforded Brett Kavanaugh weeks before everyone else was. He thought the nomination ill-conceived and the process ludicrously hasty, and that was before boofing had become part of our national political conversation. After his colleague, Susan Collins, gave up the store on Friday, King—aka The Mustache Of Righteousness—took to the floor of the Senate and delivered his own verdict.

The fact is the system we have now favors what what was considered a medium sized state in 1790 (Connecticut).
en.wikipedia.org
Connecticut had a 1/3 of VA’s population in 1790.

en.wikipedia.org

Today only 3 states:Texas, Florida, and New York have that proportion. The District population wise is bigger than two states and Puerto Rico is bigger than 20 of them. Coincidentally enough, the state next to it in population is Connecticut.

And as governor, his record clearly shows that he understood about the need for his policies to reflect his constituency, he didn’t single-mindedly pursue his own ideological preferences. He incrementally shifted policy in his preferred direction, after first generating sufficient public opinion to make those shifts not outrageously controversial.

Love him or hate him, he wasn’t “just another celebrity with an opinion”. And he was a far better governor than he was President… mostly because he was answerable to a better constituency.

Anyhow, I think there’s something to density and vote correlation. I had a bunch of townhouses that I had to canvass Saturday and my canvassing partner and I both theorized that people in these type of developments are more likely to be Democratic since they’re forced to acknowledge their neighbors and interact with them. Density allows us to see our collective humanity more than sparsely populated. It’s easy to see why the myth of the rugged individual took off in places with big land masses but not as many people. I suppose that’s true. In nominally liberal states such as New York or California, the urban areas tend to go for liberal candidates whilst the rural areas go for conservative ones.

Even here in conservative Nebraska, President Obama won an electoral vote in 2008 (NE-2, Omaha and South Sioux City). He didn’t win the same district in 2012, possibly because so many Democratic candidates were disassociating themselves from the President. (Like Maine, we split our electoral votes.)

I know it was. I hate to say it but I wonder if a large part of why that was ignored was because of who she was. She had absolutely the right idea. Much more so than Sanders who I think naively thinks 4 year education tuition free education is the solution. I believe it has its origins in Washington Irving of Sleepy Hallow fame. Plus and understandably so, Italian-Americans looking for a way to defend themselves against Nattivism in the mid to late 19th century. Columbus was from Genoa if you recall. I dunno. Just seems silly to celebrate him. I’d like to know when Columbus became such an American hero. If anyone should celebrate his achievements, it should be the Spanish and their descendants. He never even reached North America.

Celebration of Columbus’s voyage in the early United States is recorded from as early as 1792, when the Tammany Society in New York City[3] (for whom it became an annual tradition)[4][5] and also the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston celebrated the 300th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in the New World.[6][7] President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus’s landing in the New World on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These rituals took themes such as citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and the celebration of social progress.[8][9][10]

Many Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, and the first such celebration was held in New York City on October 12, 1866.[11] The day was first enshrined as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first generation Italian, in Denver. The first statewide holiday was proclaimed by Colorado governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905, and it was made a statutory holiday in 1907.[12] In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus and New York City Italian leader Generoso Pope, Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed October 12 a federal holiday under the name Columbus Day.[12][13][14] (Wikipedia, that font of all human ken [citation needed])

Yup. We had Paul Bunyon in my Michigan History classes (required) in 10th grade (though they didn’t actually claim as fact Paul Bunyon dug out the Great Lakes).

Yeah I think Irving meant well and he was just trying to create a mythos for the new Republic so I don’t blame Irving for this. I blame how history has been taught.

Kanye really thinks Kaepernick being in the same room with Trump would help Trump understand what Colin is saying. What Kanye doesn’t get is Trump has no desire to listen to what Kap is saying. And neither do these other Republicans. They’ve made him personal enemy number one because “he disrespected the flag.” They don’t care what he really wants to talk about or that he talked with Nate Boyer- a former Green Beret before he decided to kneel.

This paragraph from Hewitt’s WaPo opinion (linked above by ‘mouse) is pure Trumper and another signal that the Jenifer Rubins, Steve Schmidts, Nicole Wallaces of the right are no longer wanted in the Trumpublican Party.

That’s not even the entire list of accomplishments, but it’s enough to have silenced the #NeverTrumpers who used to mock Trump-supporting conservatives by posting a street sign carrying the name “Gorsuch” above rising floodwaters. Those of us who follow the president’s often confusing, loud, extemporaneous and disruptive presidency not by his tweets but by his administration’s deeds and those of congressional Republicans are amused that the #NeverTrump rump has stopped the “but Gorsuch” nonsense.

Part of Hillary’s platform was free job training programs for places in Appalachia with declining industry, especially coal. She was punched in the face for it and people rushed behind Trump because he promised the return of coal giants.

Susan Collins is claiming the fundraising campaign against her for a future candidate is extortion (for her vote on Kavanaugh).

The Post managed to dig up an ethics expert to claim it violates Federal bribery statues.

Gotta have that magic balance fairy.

Bribery would be if Collins was given money to vote yes or no. Had she voted no, the campaign would have returned the donations to the donors. That is not bribery.

The campaign is approaching $4 million in a state of fewer than two million people.

The real issue is “how dare Democrats raise money for my opponent. Only Republicans should get donations.”

Ultimately what drives reactionary right wing populism is a fear of change. In the 20th, it was the collapse of the old orders and this new thing called representative government. Today it’s demographic changes. Those of us in the cities or even aprts of suburbia have have diversity our entire lives. I think Obama didn’t threaten them like HRC did though which is why you do see peole who voted for Obama twice but who embrace the Trump line. Now they’re minorities within the right wing movement that exists but they do exist.

It’s all about power, and his power in particular:

McConnell would not rule out seeking to confirm a nominee if there is a Supreme Court vacancy in the final year of President Donald Trump’s first term in 2020, assuming the GOP holds onto the Senate in this November’s midterms. McConnell instead seemed to suggest that presidents don’t get Supreme Court nominees confirmed in a presidential election year — if the Senate is controlled by the opposite political party.

He’s up in 2020, and there better be ads in Kentucky saying something along the lines of “a Senate Majority Leader shouldn’t be making decisions like this when he’s up for re-election.” Either that or just calling him an asshole.

Plus it will move more non-voting women off the fence.

The GOP usually has very high turnout, so no matter how insane their rhetoric gets, it can’t turn out many more voters than they already get.

They can drive them away (either to not vote or cross parties). They can fire up Democrats who tend to not vote in midterms, and people who normally don’t vote and do not belong to either party.
