They seem a little too eager to yell and complain about all this instead of STFUing or maybe taking the morally decent side. Far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro pulled off a thumping win in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election following one of the most polarizing campaigns since the country returned to democracy three decades ago.
Bolsonaro won Sunday’s poll with 46% of the vote, ahead of left-wing ex-Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad on 29%, according to tweets from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s official Twitter account.
Bolsonaro’s lead, in a field of 13 candidates, left him just short of the 50% needed to win outright and unable to avoid a runoff against Haddad, from the Workers’ Party, on October 28.
“We indeed are able to change the destiny of Brazil,” Bolsonaro said to media after learning he would face a runoff. “We cannot continue flirting with socialism or communism.”

46%.

I was in Brazil during the military dictatorship. (1976-1977). It was a time where even foreigners needed to watch what they said. (Of the fifty-odd exchange students I went with, two did not come back - they were in jail.)

I usually call it scoundrel-signaling. Vice-signaling has the advantage of being the direct opposite of virtue-signalling, but we’re not talking about personal habits that prudes don’t approve of, or even objectively bad personal habits like smoking. We’re talking about announcing that they’re really bad people, so other really bad people feel more comfortable. Bigotry isn’t a vice, it’s a character-flaw.

Well, first he got President Hindenburg to support him for Chancellor. Then he got his Enabling Act passed (partly by blocking opposition members from entering the chamber to vote against it).

They can’t walk it back, but the problem is not just that they don’t want to, but that they keep consistently getting rewarded for it. That there is a broken system that allows them to be even more powerful and lauded because they’re not afraid of stomping on the faces of the oppressed and marginalized.

They’re encouraging stochastic terrorism. If the media won’t call them on it then the citizens have to.

Americans over the last 30 yrs or so have become civics lazy. Since Vietnam we have had relative peace and prosperity. We’ve become less engaged with each other and suffer from the illusion that online action is effectively going to change everything. We’ve allowed our infrastructure to crumble, our once model public education system to be villainized and picked to pieces and working for the benefit of helping others is seen as a negative. We lost labor unions and other protections for workers. My generation hasn’t kept the legacy alive and honestly a lot of my parents’ generation hasn’t done great either. How can we bitch at millennials when we’re the ones who raised them?

We got lazy and complacent as a nation and 9/11 was an opportunity for scum to divide us and it has only become worse. We’re reaping what’s been sown. BUT, we cannot quit fighting, voting, running for office, lather, rinse, repeat. I’m sad, scared and pissed. This didn’t happen to this country overnight and it won’t be fixed without sacrifice and work. Drag people to the polls, show young people how simple it is to vote(mostly). People need things to fight FOR as well as against, that’s a key to change.

Bellaire Police Chief Richard “Dick” Flanagan sees this as a second chance for Loehmann, who was a trainee at the time of the shooting. “He was cleared of any and all wrongdoing,” Flanagan told The Intelligencer. “He was never charged. It’s over and done with.”

Lest we forget, before Loehmann joined the Cleveland Police after lying about his job history, he was an officer in Independence, Ohio, where he was forced to resign after being deemed unfit to be a police officer. He also failed a Maple Heights Police Department exam in 2009, something he also didn’t disclose to Cleveland’s police department.

This Adam Serwer piece on the emerging new Roberts court and how it will support wealth and power is good:

The Roberts Court is poised to shape American society in Trump’s image for decades to come. All three branches of the federal government are now committed to the Trump agenda: the restoration of America’s traditional racial, religious, and gender hierarchies; the enrichment of party patrons; the unencumbered pursuit of corporate profit; the impoverishment and disenfranchisement of the rival party’s constituencies; and the protection of the president and his allies from prosecution by any means available. Not since the end of Reconstruction has the U.S. government been so firmly committed to a single, coherent program uniting a politics of ethnonationalism with unfettered corporate power. As with Redemption, as the end of Reconstruction is known, the consequences could last for generations.

Fair enough.
OTOH, and I’m not sure how things are nowadays but it used to be the case that bands or artists like that sold something like >70% of albums to 13-17y olds (or parents etc buying for), and most of that to girls.
Used to be that was where the market was. Really haven’t bothered keeping up with where the money is at nowadays, what with spotify etc.
Still, 15-ish years ago I don’t think he would have been that far off the mark, at least not here in Europe…

(…and yeah, 15 years is actually surprisingly with the times for Huckabee, hur hur)

Scientists: If we keep burning fossil fuels, the CO2 in the atmosphere will increase, and the infrared absorption of CO2 will lead to heat being trapped in the lower atmosphere instead of being radiated back into space, causing the planet to get warmer.

“Skeptics”: Prove it!

Scientists: First, here’s the atmospheric CO2 level over the last 100 years. Note the increase. Second, here’s a comparison of the IR spectrum coming off the Earth in 1950 and today. Note the reduction in frequencies of IR radiating out, corresponding to the IR absorption spectrum of CO2.

“Skeptics”: You can’t prove the CO2 is from fossil fuels!

Scientists: Fossil fuels contain almost no 14C, and the 14C:12C ratio dropped as CO2 increased, indicating the increase came from fossil fuels.

“Skeptics”: You said it was a new Ice Age!

Scientists: A few researchers mentioned that possibility to the popular press 40 years ago, but none of them published any data backing it up, so, no, we didn’t. BTW, here’s meteorological data going back to 1900, showing that the temperature has been rising significantly since the 60s.

“Skeptics”: We found one weather station that appears to be sitting in the sun!

Scientists: We took your list of ‘bad’ and ‘good’ weather station sites, looked at the data, and found that if anything, the ‘good sites’ showed MORE warming than the data as a whole.

“Skeptics”: It’s the sun!

Scientists: Total solar irradiation has been falling.

“Skeptics”: Warming has stopped!

Scientists: 1) So, you admit it’s warming, and 2) No, it hasn’t. See these data.

“Skeptics”: It’s a natural cycle!

Scientists: Of what? A cycle of what? What natural phenomenon do you propose that has caused this, and where’s the data to back it up?

Idiots: Why aren’t scientists better at convincing skeptics, and why won’t they compromise?

1. Her audience is primarily female. 67% of her website’s visitors are female, with 33% male.

2. Her audience tends towards young adults. Visitors to the website are 1.58 times more likely to be in the 18-24 age range and 1.27 times more likely to be in the 25-34 age range. Additionally, college students are 1.28 times more likely to visit her site.

3. Taylor Swift is reasonably popular among most ethnic groups - except African Americans, who are .66 times as likely to visit her site compared to the rest of the internet. (Caucasians and Asians are at 1.02 and Hispanics are at 1.13).

So, our DVR/VCR unit refused to power up on Friday.
Much as we despise Walmart, that was our only option to get a replacement in time for TWD season premiere on Sunday night.
Turns out that it’s just about impossible to purchase a new DVR unit in America. I had to go to Amazon, where choices were extremely slim (and very expensive).

After I placed my order, I figured out from some googlefu that a power outage was to blame (my surprise…power outages are almost a weekly occurrence here in TheBackwoods).
The fix was so simple it was to smh and laugh ruefully: press the Timer Set button on the remote and then press the Power button.

Voilà! (or Viola! as MrBWS says)…we now have two VCR/DVR units.

Exactly! Dem strategists (if they have any sense whatsoever) should always plan for GOPer turnout being as high and pro-trump as possible, and then crunch the numbers on what it would take to overcome it (which of course always circles back to the unglamorous, non-flashy grunt work: voter registration, voter education, canvassing, GOTV, etc)

It looks like Tivo still sells them, but most of us have moved on from DVRs. In my case, over a decade ago. Maybe two. An OTA DVR is inconvenient by today’s standards.

Most people either get a DVR with their cable account, watch their shows when they want on Hulu, or they download their TV shows these days.

Tayloer Swift is an industry, not just a pop star for young girls.

Think of her as another Gwyneth Paltrow or Oprah Winfrey, women that have monetized their original popularity into businesses with followings that go beyond their initial success and listen to their advice and guidance.

She carries a lot more listeners than just what her music brings her. And with that comes power.

That is why the Republicans and their talking heads will try to make this seem like it’s about little girls that can’t vote. Huckabee knows that, it is why he is getting out ahead of it.

I and I see upfully that
Christopher Columbus is a dam blasted liar
Christopher Columbus is a dam blasted liar
Yes Jah

He’s saying that, he is the first one

I and I say that,
What about the Arawak Indians and the few Black man
Who were around here, before him
The Indians couldn’t hang on no longer
Here comes first Black man and woman and children,
In a Jam Down Land ya
A whole heap of mix up and mix up
A whole heap a ben up, ben up,
We have fi straighten out,

IDIOCRACY ALERT!

This may literally be the stupidest thing I have ever heard of:

Yet, Snopes must deal with it:
Does Adding Your Age to Your Birth Year Equal 2,018 for ‘One Day Only’?
Needless to say, adding your age to your birth year will ALWAYS equal the current year, provided you have already had your birthday in the current year. If your birthday falls later in the year, it will equal the previous year. Duh!

Catch my amazing conversation with @SarahPalinUSA we compare and contrast what #Kavanaugh faced with what she faced in 2008. Plus, will she run for US Senate in 2022 against #Murkowski ? 7:30pm on great radio stations

so much for her threat to leave Alaska and do big things for ‘Merica…

comparisons: one. politics aint beanbag

contrasts - she ran for vice president, he was nominated for a judgeship

he was supposed to be evaluated under the senate’s advice and consent function
-they did…something. it was not advice and consent
-they had the power. they changed some rules, they had the votes.
politics aint beanbag

the only evaluative process for vice president is the public and the media
-other than the 1A, there are no rules (cf: how trump did it)
politics aint beanbag

And, not to put too fine a point on it, but if our problem is that the government is being run by Old White Men, maybe we shouldn’t elect another Old White Man? Especially a REALLY OLD White Man. do you (they) want bernie to actually, you know, win the primary or just be declared the winner now?

cause if he cant win the primary (like he didnt last time) how the eff is he going to win the general?

you can lobby all you want that people “should” vote for your guy - that’s politics
if everybody voted for him, then he’d win
but that’s an axiom. anybody would win if everybody voted for them
it not a reason to vote for him

I notice the absence of aluminum/aluminum and a few others…

It’s amusing how the British pick out just a few words that they’re determined to pronounce differently than Americans. British English is supposed to have no secondary stress at all—that’s why secretary = SEK-re-try. Then they say “JAG-You-Are”, “Oh-re-GAH-no”, “al-you-MIN-i-um”, which violate the rules of every English dialect by having more than one syllable with secondary stress. You can hear the momentary pause as they shift mental gears before and after each such word.

One of my high school English teachers from 35 years ago friended me on FB a while back. Posted fairly anodyne stuff about her kids and local fundraisers.

Then today she drops a long turd of a post about how she’s changing her registration from independent to Republican because “Democrats are bullying innocent people” and yada yada talk radio bullshit crap.

I couldn’t unfriend fast enough. No room for that in my life. (And she wasn’t even all that good a teacher back then, come to think of it.)

I’d say the latter - he got away with it. There are a lot of men, 90% will deny it, but there are a lot of men if they were presented with an opportunity and knew they wouldn’t be caught, would be happy to rape. Even the miserable rape conviction numbers that exist are all that keeps many of these “honest people honest” as the phrase goes.

I can’t believe we still even celebrate Columbus Day. It’s so antiquated and insensitive. Sigh.

At my evil too big to fail employer, the signs on the branch door say “Closed Columbus Day” in English and “Cerrado Dia de la Raza” in Spanish.

I’m in Nagasaki this morning (Tuesday), just across from the Nagasaki main station. I was awakened by a band of flutes walking by at 6 am. Still haven’t figured that out.

There’s a guy up at my work who’s a vocal conservative. He watches Fox and then checks it against conservative websites. As I passed by his office today, I mentioned the Russian lawyer that died in an “unauthorized helicopter crash” (I’m sure she’s the one that didn’t authorize it). He hadn’t heard about it (but, upon prodding, he knew the meeting was about adoptions), so I also mentioned the others, like the guy falling from his ninth story window. I followed it up with Russian lawmakers granting Putin the authority to assassinate enemies of the state. I doubt it will change much, but, considering we work with a defense contractor, I think it might raise some interesting questions in his mind. I bet those murders aren’t getting reported on Fox.

“YEAH, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REAL VICTIMS: THE MEN THEY ACCUSE?!”

See, the thing is… college-educated white women believe Christine Blassey Ford. We believe Deborah Ramirez. We know they’re telling the truth.

Because WE WENT TO COLLEGE. We knew those guys. We remember those guys.

Working class white women from mining towns or factory towns, women who went to work straight out of high school, or maybe took classes at the JC while living at home, they hear these stories and think “that’s so over the top, it couldn’t be true” — but women who attended top-tier colleges, we lived in the dorms with those guys. We saw them at frat parties. There’s literally no amount of “over the top” that we wouldn’t find plausible about those guys. Especially the Dekes. It was almost a requirement for the Dekes to behave like that.

And even as teenagers, no matter how drunk they were — those assholes still had the presence of mind not to do those things to the girls whose fathers they might want a letter of recommendation from. The girls whose fathers could get them an entry-level job at the brokerage, or the law firm. Those assholes absolutely understood which girls had well-connected families and you had to be a gentleman with them, and which girls were on their own and you could get away with almost anything.

Kavanaugh is this month’s flavor. Trump thinks he needs him. He is to be used.

So this establishes the legal principle that anyone accused of a crime can choose their own judge, right?

No, actually, it’s worse than that—they can appoint somebody to be a judge and have them preside over their trial.

When I was in college, our “bad boys” were the rugby team, who somehow had managed to commandeer one particular set of rooms over and around a major archway for seemingly decades. Their favorite shtick on weekends was to have wild, drunken parties, occasionally leading to furniture being heaved out the window over the arch. This went on my entire four years there. It was a campus joke, but eventually the administration got effin’ tired of the rugby team’s antics and changed the dorm assignment rules to break its monopoly on those room around the arch. Probably the parties still went on, but at least there was less risk of being hit by a falling sofa.

Drinking age when I was at college was 18, BTW. Not that raising the age to 21 made a difference.

The only thing I would challenge is that cotton farming is due to “fashion”. Cotton is an essential textile and has been for several millennia.

However, this case is a good example of large scale changes wrought by humans. The Aral sea was sacrificed for humans.

Add to that climate change, with increased temps meaning the pan evaporation leads to dry regions becoming even drier, it all adds up to a slow-roll disaster.

But America has been made great again, so who cares, no?
