What is it about that funk rhythm that fixes all the things wrong with Monday? It’s soul magic.

I’m honestly shocked to hear that it was a genuine post.

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) — After months of debate, the Staunton School Board decided in a 4-2 vote on Monday evening to strip Robert E. Lee High School of its name.

An online survey will be launched this week for city residents to suggest new names for the school, according to the board. It will accept comments through November.

The vote was made during a meeting in the gym at Gypsy Hill Park.

The debate drew strong reaction from people in the Queen City. Those who supported the change argued the name Robert E. Lee was offensive due to its connection to the Confederacy. But others fought for keeping the name, arguing it preserved history.

Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 8, 2018 • 7:56:35pm

A few random thoughts that have been floating through my head over the past few days about the current state of American politics. May get ranty so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

1. Conservatives love playing the victim card for a number of different reasons but it boils down to sympathy and control. In a conflict between an unwarranted aggressor and an unsuspecting or too trusting innocent we have a natural predilection to respond in a set way for each person: Angery and scorn for the aggressor, sympathy and sensitivity for the victim. Now obviously, most real world scenarios are far more complex than this basic model but it still holds true in many instances.

Of course, no one wants to deliberately be the receipient of anger and scorn so, for most situations, it’s usually preferential to play victim and go for the sympathy and sensitivity. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a victim as long as you can convince someone that you are you’ve achieved your goal.

Another reason they do this is because victims can and do manipulate those people who are sympathetic to them. Let’s say I get in a bad car accident and have to spend a few days in bed. I want ice cream, so I ask my wife if she’d mind going to the store to get me some. Under normal circumstances she might say no but since I have just been a victim of a horrible incident she is sympathetic towards me and is far more likely to go get me some ice cream without complaint or protest.

This is what Republicans are doing. Playing victim so their base and and the media will help them get whatever “Ice cream” they want when otherwise they might have said no. Not only have they used this strategy, they keep going to back to it because it has worked consistently. If it didn’t, Brett Kavanaugh would not be on the Supreme Court right now.

2. Conservatives are better at putting aside differences and voting in lockstep than Democrats are. I’m sorry but it’s the truth. Even in 2016 as the end drew near and anyone on the Left with a loud enough megaphone was saying: “Seriously, you guys, we need to stop Trump at all costs” we were all like “”Fuck that”. Instead we had people deciding to not vote because their Freedom Lord Bernie Sanders didn’t get the nomination or a deciding to vote for Jill Stein because hell, at least she’s not Hillary. The end result was of course, President Trump. If the Democrats had almost universally gotten behind Hillary the way the Republicans had gotten behind Trump, there would be a woman in the White House right now.

And it’s threatening to happen again in about a month. Democrats split between two candidates while a universally supported Republican candidate squeaks across the finish line. We can’t afford these squabbles and bickering and petty “my candidate is better than yours crap” if we have serious intentions of taking this country back. I’m all for healthy discussions and debates on who the best progressive candidate is but not when the stakes are this high.

3. No support is guaranteed. Period. Banks don’t have our backs, the media doesn’t have our backs, tech companies don’t have our backs, Universities don’t have our backs, etc. There are no sure things here. We can’t afford to assume anything. A pitcher doesn’t walk off the mound after 8 innings. A Quarterback doesn’t quit the game after the 3rd Quarter, A musician doesn’t leave the stage after three songs. You keep going. You don’t give up. You finish the job.

4. And last but certainly not least I fear we’ve entered an age where political compromise is dead and hyperpartisanship is all we have left. This is NOT the America the Founders envisioned. For decades the presumption was that both parties had fundamentally good aims, there was healthy disagreement on how to achieve of them. Now you have two very different parties with two very different sets of goals and almost no flexibility to meet in the middle.

This isn’t a five round UFC cage match in which one side aims to beat the other to a pulp, this is a Democracy. We’re supposed to be able to work through our disagreements instead of fighting each other. If we don’t have that, is there even an America left?

Critical stages in the battle for decency in government are drawing near.

It’s now or never folks.

ipsos  Oct 8, 2018 • 7:57:26pm

I want to believe there’s still some room for hope.

I have a FB acquaintance - someone I know professionally and have met a few times personally, out there almost to Anymouse territory in deep red rural Nebraska - who has always been conservative (which is fine) but started going off on FB tonight about “enemies of America” (not so fine).

And because I had some time and some patience, I decided to try to work him back down off the ledge a notch or two, gently reminding him of our in-person friendship and asking him if he’d go so far as to say I’m an enemy of America because I vote for the party he’s dubbed an enemy of America.

You know what? For tonight, anyway, it worked. A few other professional friends also jumped in on the conversation, and in the end he seemed to realize that he didn’t want to go all the way out there as to publicly call me, personally, an enemy of America. (It may have helped that I prodded him to suggest how I, personally, ought to be punished if I voted for the “enemy” party.)

We ended the thread as friends, and I think that’s a good thing. I’m sure he’ll vote for Deb Fischer, as is his right, and I’m sure he’ll vote for Trump again in two years. I may think that’s wrong on many levels, and I’m still not inclined to get into arguments on the awful platform that is FB about why I think that’s wrong, but I was very clear that I do not and will not sink to labeling him an enemy because of how he votes or what he believes.

Maybe it changed a mind or two, or at least kept a mind or two from slamming completely shut. I don’t know. I felt vaguely better in the end, anyway. Sometimes that (and a whomping huge Red Sox plunder of the Yankees!) is all you can expect from a night.

I also think that painting the entire party as undercover racists is not just wrong but irresponsible.

You can’t even hope to change people if you’re telling them they’re racist bigots at the same time.

But, y’see… a lot of it’s subconscious. We’re each a product of a time and a place, and most of our reflex reactions and gut-level assumptions and attitudes are installed before the age of 8. Who were the adults around you at that age, what attitudes did they express to each other? What was on TV or in movies?

It’s takes a LOT of work, a lot of self-awareness, and deliberately exposing oneself to a variety of inputs before we can develop higher-brain logical views of our own.

re: #55 ipsos

I want to believe there’s still some room for hope.

I have a FB acquaintance - someone I know professionally and have met a few times personally, out there almost to Anymouse territory in deep red rural Nebraska - who has always been conservative (which is fine) but started going off on FB tonight about “enemies of America” (not so fine).

And because I had some time and some patience, I decided to try to work him back down off the ledge a notch or two, gently reminding him of our in-person friendship and asking him if he’d go so far as to say I’m an enemy of America because I vote for the party he’s dubbed an enemy of America.

I don’t get those sorts of statements directed at me here, because everyone in town knows me. They know I am not “an enemy of America” for being a Democrat; I just disagree on some issues with other parties’ positions.

It does help that I live in such a small town. Will everybody vote for me? No, of course not, and that’s fine. If I am defeated in November, that’s fine too; that is how a democratic republic is supposed to work (and a village government is effectively a republic).

As I put in my questionnaire over there on the right hand bar, I want to do what people in town want for us, to the extent we can accomplish that.

I’ve been so pissed the last three days I haven’t trusted myself to post a damn thing. I’ve calmed down to the point where my anger is filed down to a sharp diamond tip.

Four weeks. We’ve got four weeks to make sure that everyone is registered and everyone votes.

Volunteer. Knock on doors. Do it in your neighborhood. We’ve got to stop this wholesale push to turn America into an oligarchy/ kakistocracy.

If they win, the .1% of the country will fully control the 99.9% of the rest of us. We’ll be wage slaves. Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, dead. No Social Safety Net. And it’s not really about the money. It’s about the power to run our lives because they are better, smarter than us, that they deserve to determine our future.

Do you really think that the Oligarchs care about Roe v Wade? They don’t. That’s just their wedge. Their daughters will be fine.

For the rest of us? They don’t give a shit. If we all work as wage slaves for 40 years and then drop dead, that would be an optimal solution for raw Capitalism.

This isn’t hyperbole, this is the goal of the money that runs the R’s. It’s not an invisible hand, it’s a bullet in your brain.

Human interaction is too complex and nuanced to be discussed in terms of Tweets and Internet memes.

I have been pondering this: there used to be this thing called courtship, which was practiced in some isolated regions well into the second half of the 20th century.

The point of this odd and archaic custom was for a woman to allow an interested male to demonstrate that he was prepared to be a gentleman and able to respect her wishes before they got into any potentially compromising situations.

Now I am not advocating anything remotely like a return to chaperones, segregated dormitories or chastity belts, but perhaps we need to rethink the nature of post-courtship dating in our society.

I met my wife on the Internet, on a specialised dating site. By the time I flew out to visit her, we’d had months of long-distance courtship via that site, E-mail, and telephone.

Presumably you could argue the Website was a chaperone, as if I’d been a jerk, I would have been banned by the moderators or owner.

This is how I came to meet my current girlfriend, we corresponded and telephoned for some time before I went to visit her.

My previous girlfriend and my ex-wife I both met through playing music with them. They were both fiddle players. Both were some years younger than me. Not that I have a thing for younger women, it just worked out that way.

But both of them had just turned 39 and panicked and dumped me. I realized that there was a certain pattern here. Current partner is even a year older than me and plays no musical instrument.

The headline implies “snowflakes.”

‘WE MUST SAVE HER!’ White nationalists melt down after one-time idol Taylor Swift endorses Tennessee Dem (Raw Story, more at the link):

Via the Daily Beast, this endorsement did not go over well with many of Swift’s one-time white supremacist fans, who angrily posted about Swift’s betrayal over the weekend on 4Chan’s /pol/ message board.

“WE MUST SAVE HER!” wrote one distraught white nationalist Swift fan upon hearing the news.

However, most 4Chan posters dismissed Swift as a lost cause, and said she would pay for not becoming a full-throated backer of white nationalism.

“Yeah I guess she didn’t learn a god damn thing,” wrote another poster. “Like most brainwashed White liberal women, but there are good White women who don’t stab their own kind in the back. Swift will get her just reward from her dindu friends, only a matter of time.”

“Stupid b*tch doesn’t respect the Trump curse,” wrote another. “She has to learn the hard way.”

As an aside, Make Trump Kittens Again also puts up kitten pictures for Taylor Swift. According to the FAQ, the site that processes this looks for combinations of people with “Trump” so I guess that’s why.

The GOP won as soon as they spun the Kavanaugh debate into a matter of he-said-she-said. They framed the question as “Do you believe Ford or BK?”, which effectively distracted us from the more important question of “Is Kavanaugh a qualified candidate for a lifetime appointment to a key constitutional body?”

And now that they have prevailed in that debate, they are counter-charging and making men like Kavanaugh out to be the victims of toxic, militant feminism.

Great Op-Ed by Max Boot. It’s honestly refreshing to see a lifelong conservative like Boot look at history and realize the clues were always there. I think he’s a little too easy on Romney and Reagan but he rightfully does point out that while Goldwater may not have been an ugly out racist like a George Wallace, he was happy to do what he could to gain their votes. And he concludes with this:
That’s why I can no longer be a Republican, and in fact wish ill fortune on my former party. I am now convinced that the Republican Party must suffer repeated and devastating defeats beginning in November. It must pay a heavy price for its embrace of white nationalism and know-nothingism. Only if the GOP as it is currently constituted is burned to the ground will there be any chance to build a reasonable center-right party out of the ashes. But that will require undoing the work of decades, not just of the past two years.

I was just trying to figure out why they clung so tenaciously to this toxic candidate. But backing down would have cost them support from their own base, and these people really hold a grudge. They are counting on the rest of the electorate being fickle and having short memories.

We need to show them otherwise.

But we are saddled with a right-wing SCOTUS for a long, long time.

I know why. I just think it’s going to backfire on them in a big way. Men may forget how Ford was treated but I don’t think many women will.

LOL.

I sense that the move away from c&w was more a financial decision, given her fans’ demographic. Her managers probably saw where the money was, and pushed her toward the pop diva niche, rather than the wholesome girl-next-door C&W niche.

I liked her country songs way better than the pop stuff she sings now, but her music is not all that bad — just way overproduced.

She has a huge fanbase here in China.

I don’t follow Taylor that closely, but the fact that she has managed to avoid the scandals of other young pop stars (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, in particular) speaks volumes to me. She is no dummy, and according to her Wikipedia bio, she recognizes that she is a role model for her young (and not so young) fans. So, telling people to vote Democratic could quite possibly sway a lot of people to do so. It will be interesting to see the Tenn. results next month, and see if the Tenn. GOP will be Swift-boated.

Probably because she had stayed out of politics, her call had more resonance:

… “We are up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period since T. Swift’s post,” said Kamari Guthrie, director of communications for vote.org.

For context, 190,178 new voters were registered nationwide in the entire month of September, while 56,669 were registered in August.

In Swift’s home state of Tennessee, where Swift voiced support for two Democratic candidates running in this year’s midterms, voter registrations have also jumped.

vote.org saw [Tennessee] registrations spike specifically since Taylor’s post,” Guthrie said. The organization has gotten 5,183 in the state so far this month — at least 2,144 of which were in the last 36 hours, she said, up from 2,811 new Tennessee voter registrations for the entire month of September and just 951 in August.

Guthrie said the site had also seen a big jump in the number of visitors since Swift’s post, with 155,940 unique visitors in the last 24 hours — second only to the number of people who visited on National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 25 when there were 304,942 unique visitors (The average daily users for the site are 14,078 in 2018)…

re: #164 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I was just trying to figure out why they clung so tenaciously to this toxic candidate. But backing down would have cost them support from their own base, and these people really hold a grudge. They are counting on the rest of the electorate being fickle and having short memories.

We need to show them otherwise.

But we are saddled with a right-wing SCOTUS for a long, long time.

What is to question?

Kavanaugh is simply seen as Trump’s protector and he buys them time with Trump.

The GOP Senate seems to be in on protecting Trump by giving him what he wants.

They need him because they can get done all the crap they want to do and have wanted for a long, long time. This is their one big opportunity, especially for the old guard like Grassley, Hatch, Graham, Cornyn, etc.

The base knows this too. So they were all in to save Trump. They will and did do anything they could to shove Kavanaugh through.

To me there is no mystery. The Donny gets what the Donny wants for as long as they can keep him in office. If Kavanaugh helps that, all the better.

Surge in Democratic and non-partisan mail ballot requests (mail ballots aren’t mandatory in every part of Nebraska).

Early Vote Requests for 10/9
Democrats: 1,924
Nonpartisan: 969
Republicans: 3,418
Unknown: 47
Total People: 6,358

Early Vote Requests to date:
Democrats: 24,750
Nonpartisan: 8,256
Republican: 30,397
Unknown: 309
Total People: 61,712

Depending on how those non-partisan ballots are cast, Democrats could outnumber Republican votes in the mail ballot category.

Interestingly, Libertarians don’t seem to be requesting ballots that way, though there is a US Senate candidate on the ballot vying for Sen. Deb Fischer’s (R) seat.

I was double checking my voter info online with the Franklin County (OH) Board of Elections.

I typed in my basic info that should have brought me up in the search…no results found.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!! I vote all the damn time, did so earlier this year.

So I called, and being the last day of registration getting through on the phone was a long wait.

I spoke to the first woman and she also could not find me. I told her I was extremely concerned and then took a shot at GOP Sec. of State Jon Husted saying I would trust him ever. She chuckled at that, then she directed my call to her superior.

The second woman looked me up on her master rolls and found me right off. She said she would check with her IT department to find out why the search box didn’t bring me up.

I asked her if this might have been done on purpose to depress someone who is already registered and might use the site and then say it it too late, screw voting.

I used to trust voting. Not so much anymore.

With few exceptions such as Rachel Maddow or Randi Rhodes, you won’t hear any media person use the word “lie.”

A few months ago here (I don’t know how to find it), there was much discussion whether it was important or not for the media to use that word rather than “falsehood” or other weaker words. I felt kind of lonely for arguing “yes, call a lie a lie.”

2. It is wrong to expect the wealthy to help fund education for the masses. Let everyone pay for their education themselves.

A lot of that happened with Democratic candidates it seems, trying to straddle the fence or snag conservative voters. And a lot of them were crushed for waffling.

Pretty much everyone in my town either asked or already knew I’d voted for President Obama. I wasn’t going to run away from that; I thought he was the best choice for the job.

It’s why I’m going to be fascinated to see how Manchin does next month compared to how Heitkamp fares. She acted from conviction even knowing it wasn’t going to please all her constituents. He waffled and weaseled until his vote didn’t matter.

How will each state’s voters process that?

Bill Buckley and his National Review were always racist to the core; he provided an aura of elitism to the movement, but it was just repackaged Jim Crow and Nazism light.

“Four weeks out from Election Day, Democrats remain well ahead of Republicans in a generic ballot matchup, with 54% of likely voters saying they support the Democrat in their district and 41% backing a Republican, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

This is the widest margin of support for Democrats in a midterm cycle since 2006, when at this point, the party held a whopping 21-point lead over Republicans among likely voters.”
cnn.com

Sounds nice, but “generic ballot” is not who’s running. It’s two (or maybe three or four) candidates for each seat being contested.

I’ve never been a big fan of these “generic ballot” polls. It seems to me that they might indicate the general excitement or disappointment in the electorate for one party or the other, but they don’t really capture the differences in each district or state.

Three days after their separation, court records show, the U.S. government labeled Alexa an “unaccompanied minor,” which meant she entered the bureaucracy for migrant youth, typically teens, who arrive in the U.S. alone. The toddler was issued a notice to appear on “a date to be set, at a time to be set, to show why you should not be removed from the United States.”

412
jaunte  Oct 9, 2018 • 11:41:34am

“…By April 2016, Alexa was transferred to the care of Bethany Christian Services, one of the nation’s largest adoption agencies. As thousands more Central American children crossed the border alone during President Barack Obama’s second term, the nonprofit agency’s work providing temporary and long-term foster care to unaccompanied children had begun to grow.

Over the years, the Michigan-based agency has received support from local donors that include Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her family members, who have contributed more than $3.1 million. One DeVos relative worked for Bethany, and another served on its board.

As the agency started receiving more Central American children, several former Bethany social workers said they were encouraged to recruit new foster families at the agency’s traditional base, the Christian Reformed Church, and other local churches.

“All of a sudden when we had these younger kids to place, everyone was really excited about that,” said Sarah Zuidema, a former Bethany supervisor who grew up within the denomination. “They just felt that if these kids could know Jesus, everything would be OK.”

The foster parents of two of my daughters made a big deal out of the fact that my wife and I were not believers, including getting the state of Texas to delay the adoption, and making us go to a church service “farewell ceremony” where the pastor, in front of his wife and three daughters, explained that he had three daughters, “but we just kept trying, until we had a son!”

Lots of people that day promised tearfully to stay in touch with the girls once they had moved all the way from Rockwall to Houston. They never heard from any of those people again.

More things you can’t do while black.

Georgia police called on black man babysitting white kids (ABC)

A white woman who spotted a black man babysitting two white children called police and then followed them home in Georgia.

WGCL-TV reported Tuesday that the woman stopped Corey Lewis outside a Cobb County Walmart and asked to speak to the kids. He refused, so she called police and followed them to his home.

An officer arrived and questioned the children, ages 6 and 10, and called their parents, David Parker and Dana Mango. The couple says Lewis is a family friend and their son attends his youth program.

Mango says the officer told her Lewis was questioned because he’s a black man driving around with two white children.

Parker said he guesses “B-W-B is the new thing, babysitting while black.”

I wouldn’t think you can get a permit to protest in front of a private residence, even if a Nazi lives there.

Its not a “protest”. He’s delivering a paid service to place of residence.

Okay what about perjury as a 53 year old District Court justice, Al. Because that’s what he would be impeached over.

Some things never change…

I don’t think it was a bad thing what happened but I do think that ultra capitalists took the wrong lessons from the New Deal. The problem now? Capitalism really doesn’t face true competition. The system your mom and your generation grew up with was a more human capitalism because the people pushing it had the Communists to worry about as competition. That’s changed since teh early 90’s IMO.

I wrote this about WIC and similar “giveaways” back in 2011.

Wake up, Randian assholes.

It is not entirely fuzzy headed altruism that drives these programs.

Today, this society has the benefit of millions of trained and educated people who would be illiterate if libertarian extremists and their predecessors had prevailed in the education funding debate. There are doctors, lawyers, and distinguished scientists whose early brain development would have been stunted without publicly funded food “giveways.” You wonder why academics hate your guts? Many of them KNOW they would have starved as children if your ilk had gotten its way.
Those who were privileged as children know their best students wouldn’t have made it to the fifth grade, let alone college, without these “giveways, this “theft” from pockets of “hard-working” folk like you morons.

Communists did not overthrow the Russian Empire and the Chinese Republic because the peasants wanted a free ride or thought goatees were cool. The peasants joined the Reds because they could see people starving in the streets, good, smart people, while inbred fatcats waltzed away the wealth that was their alleged birthright.
I hear racists bitch about the fat minority women who buy mountains of groceries with WIC cards at the local store. Good, maybe they are too fat and their kids are too busy doing homework to run me through with a pitchfork when they see me in my Rolls-Royce. I pay a LOT in taxes, goddammit, more than most Randian fantasists, and I would rather be dead than see this bill reduced at the expense of letting children grow up hungry and stunted, fodder for crazed revolutionaries.

“It can’t happen here.” That’s because we didn’t let it happen. A lot of people seem hellbent on changing that.

I guess what I got at is Capitalism needs Capitalism to save itself from its worst impulses. It needs competing ideas. That’s why we got TR’s Square Deal, Wilson’s New Freedom, FDR’s New Deal, Truman’s Fair Deal, JFK’s New Frontier, and LBJ’s Great Society. Because the Capitalists then unlike too many know saw that without a humane capitalist system that realizes that Capitalism and all economic systems are about people and not just abstract theory that is debated in academia and papers. That’s why the Von Mises people fail. And it’s also why doctrinaire communists fail ultimately too. Neither can accept that economics is a social science.

So from the article

“Alexa’s case began in November 2015 under the Obama administration, years before Trump’s family-separation policy rolled out. Her 15-month separation from her mother exposes the fragile legal standing of children under the care of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement and a flawed, piecemeal system that can change the course of a child’s life”

This seems to me a lot like the right blaming Obama for the Katrina response. I know there are more contemporaneous examples, perhaps we should stick to those.when trying to point out how evil the GOP is.

Obama had the nickname ‘Deporter in Chief’ because he deported more people than anyone who preceded him as President. One can point out how evil the GOP is without leaving out the long-term and multi-participant nature of the evils. It could be irresponsible not to.

Your older post puts a finger on why some of us, despite Bernie and co, work for the slow but steady reforms to make democratic socialism a reality. It is the middle way between death squads and revolutionary guerrillas. But I am not sure if we’ll be able to avoid either of those options anymore.

As a Christian, I believe I must be a pacifistic socialist. Pity I’m a pretty poor Christian when it comes to pacifism…
