He was around my age when he did this. Gillum’s campaign was right to pounce on the “monkey” comment. The guy is a racist and Thurgood Marshall is one of the greatest Americans we’ve had.

Sufficient unto the day...  Oct 9, 2018 • 1:09:42pm

Going to jump OT for a quick vent…

More stupid prescription shit. I called over a week ago to get my prescription filled for an anti-seizure medication.

Still hasn’t arrived. Don’t know when it will arrive. Don’t know why it hasn’t arrived. I’m only covered through ONE chain of pharmacies. There are no other locations of that chain in my state that have it. They’re transferring it from out of state to here…it was supposed to be here today, it’s not.

I am slightly more grumpy than usual.

I have to think that every time the Republicans do something crazy for old-man Trump, some more Americans decide to never vote for a Republican for the rest of their lives.

I didn’t always have a “no Republicans ever” policy. They had to get me interested in politics by being in-your-face offensive, then they had to convince me that the monsters aren’t outliers. They put a lot of effort into making themselves completely intolerable.

He’s wording it like that because the DOJ told him that appointments to positions would be nepotism.

re: #21 unproven innocence

Was it Caligula?

That’s the lore, but it seems to not be true.

Historical accuracy
The accuracy of the received history is generally questioned. Historians such as Anthony A. Barrett suggest that later Roman chroniclers such as Suetonius and Dio Cassius were influenced by the political situation of their own times, when it may have been useful to the current emperors to discredit the later Julio-Claudian emperors. Also, the lurid nature of the story added spice to their narratives, winning them additional readers.

One suggestion is that the treatment of Incitatus by Caligula was an elaborate prank, intended to ridicule and provoke the senate, rather than a sign of insanity, or perhaps a form of satire, with the implication that a horse could perform a senator’s duties.[4]

Barrett notes that “Many stories were spread about Incitatus, originating most likely from Caligula’s own humorous quips.”[5] “Possibly out of perverted sense of humor Caligula would pour libations to Incitatus’ salus [health and well-being], and claimed that he intended to co-opt him as his priest.”[5]

Ancient sources are clear that the horse was never actually made a consul.[6]

I’m torn between, “We gotta stop this utter destruction of ‘mos maiorus’ - or the generally accepted norms of decorum and behavior that have kept us together as a society” …

And just saying, “Fuck it, let it all burn. The GOP wants to destroy the US, let their voters live with what a Venezuelan-style meltdown really does.”

We’ve put our house on the market. We are moving out of the U.S, because the lights are all into the red zone, alarm horns are going off, etc. After the election, it is going to be 2008 all over again.

But the rest of us will suffer too. Remember: A plurality voted for Hillary; we still have a chance to recover from this.

Where are you relocating that will really be safe? Right now, too much of the planet is infected with toxic nationalism. One could argue that in the 1930’s too many people refused to recognize the signs and failed to save themselves because they stayed too long in Europe. I don’t think that we have reached that point yet but maybe I’m just deluding myself. But it’s not clear that any country is now safe from this poison.

Split between Spain & Chile right now. Northern Spain is on the euro (although that’s going to take a hit in the next few months, as the Brexit shitshow really blows up on everybody), and it is relatively cool & temperate.

Chile is basically a hidden gem in South America. First-world infrastructure, stable government, solid currency, and in the southern hemisphere, and thus out of the northern wind patterns for radioactive fallout.

Recent travels to Asia, South America, Africa, etc., have demonstrated to me that things are getting worse faster than even the worst-case scenario people have said.

No slumlord Klan-loving father Fred, no grandson Donald, no Eric or Jr. or Ivanka. Just a blessed absence of all things Trump in the national consciousness.

It really started hitting home for me back in 2007, when I was high up in the Andes at what used to be a ski resort. I was standing on bare volcanic rock. About 2,000 feet further up the mountain was snow.

It was shirtsleeve-warm weather. Dead of winter.

The resort owners and the staff (the place was deserted, for obvious reasons), all got shit-faced drunk with me that week. They were pulling old black and white photos from the 30s off the wall, and showing me where the glacier had come to within a mile of the resort and the natural termas (hot springs) bubble up. These days?

Have to hike way up even to see the vestigial tail of said glacier.

We. Are. Fucked.

There don’t seem to be any real reports of misbehavior when Kavanaugh is sober. It’s possible (even likely) that most of physical assaults on others were confined to his high school/college years. Yeah, the Catalunians are pretty worked up these days. They’re being taxed to death to support the ultra-right wing, neo-Francoist provinces that have rigged the system to transfer wealth from the young & productive industries on the coasts. There’s also a realization that the damn Catholic church-controlled “cajas” (banks) basically looted the fuck out of their pension funds and distributed it to well-connected actual honest-to-god fascist families.

Friend of mine is moving to Prague, but TBH, I think that Putin has plans for Eastern Europe over the next few years that involve tanks, barrel bombs, and lots of pro-Western people staring out from behind barbed wire in Siberia.

I just moved out of the US. Not because of wanting to be “safer” but living in Wisconsin much of this kind of shit started when Walker was elected with a solid legislative majority in 2010 thanks to Koch dollars. I lived with this shit for 8 years already, the lies, the payoffs, the refusal of representatives to meet with people, running roughshod over and around every political convention. I will still vote, and contribute money, and even phone bank from here. But I’m just not interested in living in a shithole country anymore, and I can’t afford to move to California.
