Video: Trump Floats the Idea of Making Daughter Ivanka UN Ambassador: “But I’d Be Accused of Nepotism if You Can Believe That”

Sure, it would be against the law, but in the Trump era I have a lot less faith in the words “prohibited by law” than I used to. It used to be prohibited by law to lie to Congress under oath, too, I thought, but Brett Kavanaugh’s now a Supreme Court Justice, so what do I know?

“…The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a lower-court order requiring voters in North Dakota to present certain forms of identification and proof of their residential address in order to cast a ballot in next month’s elections. A case challenging this requirement on behalf of the state’s sizable Native American populations alleged that the requirement would disenfranchise tribal residents, many of whom lack the proper identification and do not have residential addresses on their identification cards.”

There are a LOT of folks on the Right who think a law can’t possibly be discriminatory, no matter how unequal its impact, no matter how intentional that unequal impact may be, unless its text literally says something like “No Indians may vote”.

“…Ginsburg noted that according to the factual record of the case, about 20 percent of voters likely to try to cast a ballot in the midterms will lack the required identification. Another “approximately18,000 North Dakota residents also lack supplemental documentation sufficient to permit them to vote without a qualifying ID,” she noted.

re: #4 jaunte

It seems like a simple thing - if you believe that voters shoul dhave to show ID to vote, you should also believe that the State should make a huge, proactive effort to identify every single eligible voter and provide them, free of charge or inconvenience, with that ID.

Of course, that would be what you’d do if you were believed in Voter ID to ensure only eligible voters vote. Otherwise, you’re charging a poll tax for the purpose of disenfranchising voters.

This is really true. I’ve had discussions of voter ID with righties, and they SIMPLY CANNOT COMPREHEND that their own experience of life is not universal.

Plus, they wildly overestimate the how much you have to show ID. Basically for me, it’s when I travel by plane. That’s it.

The Lubbockites are living up to their well deserved international reputation for getting things wrong. I went to Walmart to pick up a couple of things and some doofus got huffy and sarcastic with me because he thought I was the greeter and had failed to greet him. I had just picked up a hand basket from the greeter’s station when the doofus ran up to me, stopped at the last second and said “Welcome to Walmart” in a sarcastic tone. As usual with these creatures, he ran away as fast as his stupid feet would carry him. I said, “Hey, man, what is that about?” before he got out of earshot.
He said, “Ain’t you supposed to be greetin’ people?”
I said, “I don’t work here. Do you see a vest or a name tag?” He huffed again and ran off.
It’s a wonder that they even had a handbasket, they didn’t last time I was there. The actual greeter, to whom I spoke on the way out, told me they had dropped them for a long time because the yokels kept stealing them. The new ones are tagged and an alarm will sound if they go out the door.

I hate to sound crass but Democrats should be working on getting potential voters the ID they need instead of waiting for election years to challenge these laws. We already know that this is the game Republicans play. Why not play the game too by getting the ID to our voters? Surely, the ID isn’t supernatural or impossible to get. Play the game until we can get these laws overturned by voting out Republicans.

The Dems should approach voter registration as a year round endeavor, not just in the lead up to primaries and general elections. Even if someone is registered, it’s a good way to check in and let them know they haven’t been forgotten (from what I’ve read/heard on podcasts lately, that seems to be a major complaint).

If/when the rules change they can let voters know and help them get info/docs in order.

Stay engaged in off years, and that might help turnout in mid-terms.

I don’t know what the obstacles are, but many years ago in rural areas, people had PO boxes in town because there was no local delivery. And there were no rural addresses, people used landmarks to find you. Later, In white areas, they went to RFD addresses, which still did not give a number address, and fire numbers which had no meaning other than to the fire department. Recently, rural roads in white areas have become numbered as though it were cities, my county used fractional numbering (8 3/4 Street, 21 1/2 avenue). As this system rolled out, primarily driven by 911 service, the fire number changed to a street address relating to the numeric street grid. It would not surprise me at all if most reservations have none of these conventions. How to you legally register a street address when there is no street name and no house number? If you just ran around putting up signs and numbers, the white folk would insist on proper surveying and recording.

I can understand why a woman who’d been assaulted as she described would remember that detail, since given the tendency to self-blame, she’d have wondered what she did to bring this on - “Was I drunk?”

Yep, and it’s very easy to fact-check him, and explain the concept of time and change to the people who fall for his propaganda. Or maybe they’re just not very bright.

But I think you make a good point, that valuing belief over knowledge does not work well when the point is the pursuit of knowledge. And let’s face it - most arguments with Conservatives reveal that 1) they lack basic logic skills, and 2) they construct their arguments backwards from the conclusion.

The other point, of course, is that Conservatives tend to believe that teaching, either at the primary and secondary level, or at the university level, is not a worthwhile pursuit. It doesn’t pay much, and it’s hard work. Note how little they respect teachers of any sort.

In undergrad in the late 90s, I was very much a laizze faire libertarian. I once suggested in a debate that privatizing schools could accomplish more than the current system. I was a political science major. Pretty much all of my professors were much further to the “left” than I was (or probably am today, for that matter). I think my GPA within my major was somewhere around 3.8.

Never once had my political beliefs held against me in any class. Then again, I was also never a raging douchebag of asshole drippings.

Mostly public school teachers and university profs, but less true for religious school teachers and Xian college teachers. They love teachers who teach kids the kind of BS they want kids to learn, hate teachers who teach kids how to think independently and critically with real facts at their disposal.

re: #58 Old Liberal

Until very recently we had nothing but fire numbers and RFD in our area. (I am on RFD#2, the in-town route. RFD#1 is the out-of-town route.)

When we got 911 service in 2012 (yes, 2012), they converted our house fire numbers to street addresses. Ditto out in the country.

The difference is that everything here is already surveyed and platted.

Village board meeting in a few minutes, so I will bounce right out again.

One of the highest beliefs in movement conservatism dogma is that they are “smarter” than any who oppose them because they have “common sense” or “street smarts” or a similar two word description meaning “smart enough to open a ketchup bottle.” You’ll often hear it when they blurt out that they can’t understand why people they’re arguing with can’t see what is so “obvious” to them, like the idea that there’s early snow in Canada means “global warming is a hoax.” Or how their daddy living to be 95 without getting lung cancer means it’s safe to smoke like a chimney while working around asbestos because “You just gotta know what you’re doing.”

I’m pretty sure Drumpf believes that that the people who “Drew It” were senior climate scientists who were scared of losing their government grants, as opposed to senior climate scientists who are just scared shitless over the implications of their recent, consistently consistent 2040 model runs.

He’ll ignore it. He’s an idiot.

He’s irrelevant — it’s the fact that the entire GOP doesn’t care. If the GOP supported the science, then Trump would follow. It’s not as though he really cares about any policy issues other than enriching himself or helping his BFF Putin. The party is owned by Koch Bros and the fossil fuel industry and has no interest in implementing any programs that might adversely affect their profits.

Assuming that Congress does not pass a law outlawing abortion nationwide, couldn’t we have a return of the Underground Railroad, except this will be an above ground system to transport poor women to states that permit abortion?

Maybe, or have a conspiracy of Doulas dispensing pennyroyal?

Joking, of course. But your suggestion needs money, and lots of it. Who pays? It would be great if Melinda Gates grabbed Bill by his little geeky earlobes and made him set up that kind of system, but you know that the R’s would pass a law similar to the one preventing the interstate transport of miners for immortal porpoises.

(sorry, ancient, horrible pun joke punchline, but you get the idea…)

I hate to sound crass but Democrats should be working on getting potential voters the ID they need instead of waiting for election years to challenge these laws. We already know that this is the game Republicans play. Why not play the game too by getting the ID to our voters? Surely, the ID isn’t supernatural or impossible to get. Play the game until we can get these laws overturned by voting out Republicans.

My bold of course.
This is the winning play at the forefront. Just my opinion, and I’m no Nate Silver or strategist. For all those millions that go into radio, robo calls, broadcast TV, robo calls, cable, mailers, did I mention robo?
Getting legit ID out to those that lack it has lasting impact that is positive. Slightly longer term thinking and tactics here folks. The GOP primary a few years ago showed us the short play is the wrong play. SCOTUS shows us this clearly. Not scolding anybody, just saying do stuff that sticks. It is also maybe crass, but you know how the evangelicals preach at the free Thx giving dinner?

Brand the safety net as progressive and modern, the moral high ground. The fact it’s us the neighbors that give a crap for real. Stop letting the bad guys define the language. Slightly edited for a paste fumble.

Planned Parenthood or NARAL could develop some type of system to support women. Certainly states could implement draconian laws that would punish women who seek abortions or actually have one. Let’s wait and see what the SC actually decides on this issue.

I will never forgive the Bernie Bros from putting us in this position.

The problem is that the State’s that demand a photo ID are controlled by the same people who want to limit access to photo IDs.

“Where is your original copy of your Birth Certificate?”

“Um, in California, I guess, where I was born. I have this notarized photocopy of it.”

“Not good enough! We need an original!”

The GOP has proposed in the past, and I guarantee they’ll propose again if they get the chance, to say that interstate “trafficking” in abortion would be a felony, both for the person seeking it and the person providing it (and anyone facilitating transport).

The Fear Driving Conservative Support for Kavanaugh

Trumpism, at its core, is a rebellion against changes in American society that undermine traditional hierarchies. It’s based on the belief that these changes, rather than promoting fairness for historically oppressed groups, actually promote “political correctness”: the oppression of white, native-born Christian men. To understand the conservative response to the allegations against Kavanaugh, a few data points are useful. From 2013 to 2018, according to the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), the percentage of Republicans who said that in the U.S. “there is a lot of discrimination against women” fell by half, from 28 to 14 percent. (Among Democrats during the same period it rose from 55 to 71 percent). By contrast, from 2012 to 2016, the percentage of Republicans who said men face a “great deal” or a “lot” of discrimination doubled, from 9 to 18 percent. (Among Democrats it declined slightly). And in 2016, according to PRRI, 68 percent of Donald Trump supporters said American society is becoming “too soft and feminine.”

Well — that’s a potential problem under the current system. If Roe vs Wade is overturned, my guess is that the states that outlaw abortion will never care about deaths of women due to botched abortions. A country that doesn’t care about thousands of deaths of Puerto Ricans will not care about dozens of women dying because they did not have access to a safe and legal abortion.

Meanwhile, I have no trouble flying in planes, walking on glass floors high above the Earth, or peering out of tall buildings or over tall cliffs. But I get nervous climbing ladders. When I had to clean the gutters in my houses, it was a true profile of courage.

I have that problem solved: No gutters on my house. I don’t go up on ladders if I can help it though (partly because of fear, partly because of epilepsy).

When we were doing decommissioning inspections on the USS Saratoga, I was assigned to inspect an ordinance space on the 7th deck. Access was from the 2nd deck via a trunk (ladder straight down five decks). I could not make myself do that, despite all the yelling from my senior chief.

Another time we were installing an airborne IFF transponder in the ship’s radar room (because their transponder went down and we were repairing it). I was tasked with installing an airborne blade antenna on the mast. Hell no. I’ll scrub every head on the ship for a month, but you ain’t making me do that without pointing a gun at me.

(The village has long owned a domain, but has never put anything on it. She volunteered to do that, mostly because she likes doing that sort of thing and our town is notorious for not paying anyone they don’t have to.)

Well, Randall Theo (former board member of the Boy Scouts of America) is now speaking in public why he left. It is over the new resolution this year reaffirming their ban on atheists, specifically this part of the resolution:

The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgement of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members. No matter what the religious faith of the members may be, this fundamental of good citizenship should be kept before them.

Nice to know that the BSA, like George HW Bush, thinks I can’t be the “best type of citizen.”

If they want, as a private organisation, to keep people out, within the context of the law that is their right.

As a Congressionally-chartered organisation, they should not (but conservatives and a lot of BSA members don’t give a crap). They’re doubling down on the days from when I was tossed from the BSA for my (lack of) religious faith.

Shooter or trans? Which is the greater threat?

Equality Stafford Community,

This past week, an incident occurred during a middle school lock down drill in Stafford County. When the drill began, a particular class of children took shelter in the bathroom/locker room nearest them as they were in PE. One student was prevented from entering either the boys or girls locker room while the teachers discussed where she should go. The student was forced to watch the adults charged with her care, debate the safest place (for the other students) to have her shelter. During this debate, she was instructed to sit in the gym with a teacher until the drill was complete, away from her peers and identified as different. After some additional debate, she was made to sit in the locker room hall way, by the door away from her peers. This happened because the child, in addition to being a model student, also happens to be transgender.

Let me be clear. During an event that prepares children to survive an attack by actual assailants, she was treated as if she was so much of a danger to peers that she was left exposed and vulnerable. These events occur across our country right now but this one happened here.

Facebook Post

They were supposed to go to tonight’s school board meeting to protest this treatment. I wonder how it came out.

Meanwhile in Indiana:

Because nothing says Christian persecution like the Satanic Temple cleaning up trash on the highway near your house.

They joined Indiana’s Adopt-a-Highway programme and were assigned a stretch of roadway to clean. Neighbours complain that the state sign listing the Satanic Temple as the cleaners for that stretch of highway “lowers their property values” and one compared it to the Ku Klux Klan having a sign near her house.

Yeah, the Satanic Temple cleaning up trash on a roadway is just like people who committed domestic terrorism and murder against minorities for 150 years.

The Satanic Temple does not worship Satan. They assert constitutional rights.

So far the state is holding firm: As long as the Satanic Temple holds up their end of the deal to clean up trash, the signs stay.

Yup.

They can’t have it both ways. Unless the Klan was somehow specifically outlawed, then the Klan can clean up highways like any other group. (To be clear, I think the Klan is an odious organisation.)

Ditto with the Satanic Temple in Indiana. As far as they go, the residents can either try to claim that religious organisations (which they are not) should not be allowed to participate in a government programme and have their name emblazoned on a state sign.

That’s actually a good argument, and would get every church in the state kicked off those signs as well.

Or, they can quit being snowflakes and thank the folks cleaning up the trash along the road in front of their homes.

They were supposed to go to tonight’s school board meeting to protest this treatment. I wonder how it came out.

Stafford County, Virginia is just north of Fredericksburg Virginia along the Interstate-95 corridor. It is on the far edge of the Washington DC metropolitan area at about 40 miles away. Stafford County is also about 60 miles from Richmond. Finally, it is a very wealthy county. [11th among US counties in 2006 and 2009 according to Forbes.]

en.wikipedia.org

On the School Board meeting:

From the WashPost (Before the meeting):

“The mother said she discussed the incident with Stafford Superintendent Scott Kizner, whom she described as concerned and receptive. The Stafford school system, about 45 miles outside the District, issued a statement saying it does not comment on individual incidents involving students but noted Kizner requested a review of all protocols and procedures.”

washingtonpost.com

From Fox 5 (Yeah, I don’t like to cite them either. But they were the only report on the meeting that I could find.)

“At a school board meeting Tuesday night, Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner apologized to a transgender middle school student who was told she could not take shelter in either the girls or boys locker rooms during a recent lockdown drill.”

“Dr. Kizner said in an interview Tuesday night that he personally supported allowing transgender students to have the option to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match with their gender identity. He said he would work with the school board to come up with policies and practices that allow that in the coming weeks, but did not give an exact timeline.”

And additional reasons victims of sexual abuse or assault don’t report: Protective laws.

A woman from Scottsbluff is suing the Scottsbluff School District alleging her golf coach in high school abused her for three years. That coach was sentenced to 32 years imprisonment.

She alleges the school district did not take her claims of abuse seriously, failing in their duty to protect students.

The school district is arguing to dismiss the case, because of a law on the books in this state which protects political subdivisions from certain suits:

In its latest motion, filed on Oct. 2, the Scottsbluff Public Schools, through its attorney, has filed a motion to dismiss, alleging that the plaintiff had not filed written notice with the school district within one year of the claim accruing or begun a lawsuit within two years.

and

In its response, the school district says that under the Political Subdivisions Tort Claims Act, the plaintiff needed to file a notice of claim within one year of the occurrence or before the plaintiff turned 21 years old and that the act requires that a suit must be started within two years. However, the school district says it is also exempt from other longer statute of limitations because of the Political Subdivisions Tort Claims Act, because it is protected from claims arising out of assault or battery.

This Vicious Buffoon Is a Vessel for All the Worst Elements of the American Condition

“In my life, I have watched John Kennedy talk on television about missiles in Cuba. I saw Lyndon Johnson look Richard Russell squarely in the eye and and say, ‘And we shall overcome’. I saw Richard Nixon resign and Gerald Ford tell the Congress that our long national nightmare was over. I saw Jimmy Carter talk about malaise and Ronald Reagan talk about a shining city on a hill. I saw George H.W. Bush deliver the eulogy for the Soviet bloc, and Bill Clinton comfort the survivors of Timothy McVeigh’s madness in Oklahoma City. I saw George W. Bush struggle to make sense of it all on September 11, 2001, and I saw Barack Obama sing “Amazing Grace” in the wounded sanctuary of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
These were the presidents of my lifetime. These were not perfect men. They were not perfect presidents, god knows. Not one of them was that. But they approached the job, and they took to the podium, with all the gravitas they could muster as appropriate to the job. They tried, at least, to reach for something in the presidency that was beyond their grasp as ordinary human beings. They were not all ennobled by the attempt, but they tried nonetheless.
And comes now this hopeless, vicious buffoon, and the audience of equally hopeless and vicious buffoons who laughed and cheered when he made sport of a woman whose lasting memory of the trauma she suffered is the laughter of the perpetrators. Now he comes, a man swathed in scandal, with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket and what he can put over on a universe of suckers, and he does something like this while occupying an office that we gave him, and while endowed with a public trust that he dishonors every day he wakes up in the White House. The scion of a multigenerational criminal enterprise, the parameters of which we are only now beginning to comprehend. A vessel for all the worst elements of the American condition. And a cheap, soulless bully besides. Watch him again, behind the seal of the President of the United States. Isn’t he a funny man? Isn’t what happened to that lady hilarious? Watch the assembled morons cheer. This is the only story now.”

Part of Rep. Kevin Cramer’s (R-ND) dislike of women and minorities goes quite far back.

Back in 2013, Rep. Cramer was meeting with Native American non-violence groups about the Violence Against Women Act, which he thought had unconstitutional sections in it regarding tribal lands.

In that conversation, Heidi Heitcamp’s staffers and Kevin Cramer displayed far different attitudes toward the tribal councils opinions on the act: Heitcamp’s staffers were interested, asked questions seeking information, and took detailed notes.

Cramer launched into a tirade against tribal councils (saying he wished he could wring the necks of one) and insisting a white man could not get a fair trial on a reservation (never mind the VAWA gives tribes limited control in those areas), thus he would be “afraid” to set foot on any reservation in the state.

There is a fascinating recounting of Cramer’s violent threats and paranoia with the anti-violence Native groups here.

If all goes as scheduled, the satellite will have undergone all the tests and be ready for launch in April, Poland’s PAP news agency reported, citing a space technology executive.

The satellite, called Światowid, will be flown to the International Space station (ISS) from where it will be launched into orbit, Grzegorz Zwoliński, CEO of the SatRevolution company, told PAP.

The 20x10x10 cm device is a wholly Polish design based on domestic know-how from start to finish, Zwoliński said.

The satellite is expected to take photographs to enable observation of water levels, the condition of the air and changes in weather, the PAP news agency reported.

Half the reason there is how cowed the media is and how willingly they will run the conservative/GOP side of things with zero pushback or analysis, just taking it at face value like it was already an agreed upon truth. Meanwhile ,anything from the leftward side of things has to be verified in triplicate to be considered even close to as trustworthy and even then is couched in language questioning it constantly.

The success isn’t as much in the message as it is in the inundation and unabated echo chamber. It’s the same inundation that hammered into the media’s head that they somehow need to make up for ‘liberal media bias’ that created the massive constant overcorrection we have now.

re: #324 Citizen K

The media isn’t cowed. It is an active and willing part of the Republican 24/7 Bullshit Machine.

Sigh, yeah, fair enough. I’ve been on the soapbox before about how cowardice fades into complicity with enough time. The point unfortunately remains the same: the GOP narrative wouldn’t be nearly as successful if not for the active enabling of the press.

10-10 is not a thing here. But we just finished a week-long holiday for the National Day — the anniversary of Mao’s declaration of the People’s Republic of China on 10/1/1949.

The first Chinese republic is mentioned in the history books as a first step toward the PRC, as I understand it. But its founding does not get a national holiday. In Taiwan, it does.

re: #336 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Single’s Day is marketing genius. TaoBao, the retail branch of the B2B platform Alibaba, created the Single’s Day sales bonanza almost singlehandedly by monetizing an informal “holiday” created by some unattached college students tired of the attention paid to couples.

Just heard an interview with Stephen Carter, who has written Invisible. It sounds as though she was an early practitioner of start at the bottom of the mob, and flip your way up. Was she the first? I don’t know, but her success is probably a big reason why Thomas Dewey went on his political career.

Publishers Weekly: Bestseller Carter (Back Channel) narrates the life story of his exceptional grandmother, Eunice Carter, an African-American attorney who masterminded the sting operation that resulted in the imprisonment of mobster Charles “Lucky” Luciano. Eunice Carter graduated from Smith College cum laude with a bachelor’s and master’s in just four years, and went on to attend Fordham Law before being employed by the future governor of New York and Republican presidential nominee Thomas Dewey. Working under Dewey, Eunice spearheaded the investigation that proved the mob was running New York City’s brothels and helped flip the witnesses that specified Luciano’s involvement. For years after, however, Dewey repeatedly passed her over when making appointments. The author provides fascinating analysis on this time in history in which most African-Americans moved from voting Republican to Democrat, leaving conservatives like his grandmother and Dewey out in the cold. Carter also provides background on Eunice’s parents, both renowned African-American rights activists; explores her tense relationship with her brother, whose Communist ties very likely hindered her success; and discusses her less-than-ideal marriage. And he evokes her Harlem, where “women wore fancy hats. Men wore colorful suits…. In the clubs, jazz combos played… the rising black bourgeoisie flourished.” Carter’s enthusiasm for his grandmother’s incredible fortitude despite numerous setbacks is contagious; Eunice Carter’s story is another hidden gem of African-American history. Dishonestly called “Medicare for All,” the Democratic proposal would establish a government-run, single-payer health care system that eliminates all private and employer-based health care plans and would cost an astonishing $32.6 trillion during its first 10 years.

What they’re leaving out is that this 32.6T program… would be a replacement for a complicated system that currently costs $35T. It’s a big savings. (once it’s fully implemented. The transition would be a fucking nightmare. The biggest reason the UK could build NHS is because after WWII everything was rubble and they were starting essentially from scratch, they didn’t have to transition from anything or destroy anything to make room for it.)

I am seriously acrophobic despite being a pilot for most of my life. CN Tower has a sizable glass floor that you (NOT I) can walk on. When we there some years ago, my wife teased me about not even being able to get close to the edge while toddlers were out playing on it. Well, toddlers do a lot of things I wouldn’t do, like eat bugs and crap in the bath water. As for the insane adults who were out on the floor, I attributed this to a lower state of evolution. Fear of heights was an obvious survival trait once our ancestors had adapted to life on the ground rather than in the trees. Those revered ancestors who were not afraid of heights soon fell out of a tree or trundled off a cliff before they could beget little anthropoids.

Don’t know if it was posted here earlier, but it’s looking like it might well be the end of the road for Sears.

Sears Holdings is getting things in order for a bankruptcy filing that could come sometime this week.

The retailer has reportedly hired M-III Partners to make the preparations for the filing, people familiar with the situation tell Dow Jones Newswires.

A debt payment deadline may be the final straw.

Sears has $134 million in debt due on Monday.

In recent days, M-III staff have been at the retailer’s headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, one person said.

Sears continues to discuss other options and could still avert an in-court restructuring, the people added.

Sorry about the source (Fox Business) but it is newsworthy. foxbusiness.com

Sears was my first real adult job; I learned a lot about retailing, customer service, and marketing and the crew I worked with - this was in the early-to-mid 1990’s - were a solid bunch. The store I worked at is one of those slated to close next month (columbian.com).

Sears was my first real adult job; I learned a lot about retailing, customer service, and marketing and the crew I worked with - this was in the early-to-mid 1990’s - were a solid bunch. The store I worked at is one of those slated to close next month (columbian.com).

I think Lampert’s been deliberately asset-stripping the company so he can sell off the real estate for a nice chunk of change when Sears finally folds.

Here’s a better source - and story - on what’s going down at Sears.

Sears Holdings Corp., the struggling U.S. retailer owned by hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert, is laying the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing as soon as this weekend as it faces a critical debt maturity.

Lampert, who for weeks has been pushing a debt restructuring proposal that would avoid a Chapter 11 filing, is now focused on a deal that would preserve stakeholders’ value in a court restructuring, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The company is in talks for financing that would fund operations through bankruptcy, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Eddie LampertSource: Sears Holdings Corp.
Representatives from Sears didn’t immediately return requests for comment.

Sears faces $134 million of debt maturing on Oct. 15, and Lampert’s ESL Investments said in a filing last month that the borrowings coming due were among those creating “significant near-term liquidity constraints” for the company. ESL, the retail chain’s biggest shareholder and also a major lender, proposed last month for Sears to refinance its debt and sell real estate to help pay down borrowings.

Really, it’s kind of a shame - no doubt about it, Sears is an icon of American retailing. But the problems started long before Lampert showed up. In the 1990’s, Sears threw away a chance to establish an early internet e-shop presence. And in retrospect, that turned out to be a fatally shortsighted blunder.

That’s how I see it too. They started down the right path with Prodigy, but shut down the catalog division just before it could have become the back end to being Amazon before Amazon existed. It would have been a long game, unprofitable at first, but they’d be a successful company today.

This fear of rampaging liberal killers is a major theme in RWNJ internal (“preaching to the choir”) propaganda. It is cobbled up from the constant repetition of the absurd claim that mass shooters are liberals, and the similar mis-characterization of noisy protests as violent riots. It dovetails nicely with the universal wingnut fear of violent “others” lurking behind every street sign.
RAND PAUL’S WIFE SAYS SHE KEEPS LOADED GUN BY HER BED OUT OF FEAR OF LIBERAL ATTACKS

The wife of Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky said Friday she had upgraded her home’s security system and even sleeps with a loaded gun by her bed as she fears violence by liberals in today’s exceedingly contentious political climate.

Kelley Paul described how she had set up several extra security measures to make sure she would be safe even if someone broke into her home while she was there.

“We’ve updated all of our security systems at home. I sleep with a loaded gun by my bed. I’m home alone a lot, obviously when Rand is [in Washington], and so I’ve got deadbolts all around my house so that if someone’s in my house when I go to bed I’m deadbolted in three different levels,” Paul told Breitbart for an interview published Monday.

Neither me nor my wife would walk out on it when we were up there. On the other hand, I did walk out on the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon. My buddy I was there with refused.

Welp, I check he Hurricane Center and worst fears are realized. Michael is a Cat 4 with sustained 150 mph winds with gusts expected> 170 MPH and surge > 4 meters.

That’s a monster of a storm. Tyndall and Eglin AFBs are going to be shredded, and FEMA has no money left after Florence. Hell, they still need billions in funding for last year’s storms.

Sad.

The GOP’s worry is not that a journalist was killed by Saudis goons, but that it will turn out that the White House had foreknowledge and either did nothing or (worse) gave explicit orders to the intel agencies not to warn Khasshogi because it would piss off the Saudis.

Why would that worry them?

Landfall is imminent:

[Embedded content]

Intermediate update from the National Hurricane Center:

SUMMARY OF 1100 AM CDT…1600 UTC…INFORMATION
———————————————————————-
LOCATION…29.6N 85.8W
ABOUT 35 MI…55 KM SW OF MEXICO BEACH FLORIDA
ABOUT 40 MI…65 KM S OF PANAMA CITY FLORIDA
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS…150 MPH…240 KM/H
PRESENT MOVEMENT…NNE OR 15 DEGREES AT 14 MPH…22 KM/H
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE…923 MB…27.26 INCHES

On the east side of the storm, the forward motion added to the storm equals 160 mph, subtracted from the west side 140. The storm still has a couple more hours over water to intensify, but is also starting to interact with land.

Over on the east coast, a tropical storm warning is in effect, and depending on how the winds go into Michael, could drive a storm surge up the St. John’s River into downtown Jacksonville.

Just heard an interview with Stephen Carter, who has written Invisible. It sounds as though she was an early practitioner of start at the bottom of the mob, and flip your way up. Was she the first? I don’t know, but her success is probably a big reason why Thomas Dewey went on his political career.

I heard that interview on way to work this morning on NPR. Sounds like a real good story.
