Wait — Lindsey Graham is actually concerned about a serious problem with the Saudi government? Or do you think after a conversation with Herr Trump or Jared, he will back off? Is he really capable of doing the right thing?

Democrats should be embarrassed as fuck that Bob Menendez is on the ballot for re-election. His corruption, even by New Jersey standards, is despicable for moral and ethical reasons. But also for pragmatic strategic reasons — his existence in the caucus provides the R’s with an unlimited bucket of “whatabouts” for all occasions.

I agree, and I wish the Democrats had recruited a good candidate to primary him. But if I lived in NJ I would hold my nose and vote for him in the general, because we don’t want to give away senate seats to the GOP to enable its evil agenda. Sometimes you have to vote for the lesser of two evils.

I just got done watching a documentary on the 1990s. This particular episode was about crime and racial issues and covered mostly 1991-1996.

Among the items covered:

- A white person getting sentenced to NO prison time after being convicted of the shooting death of a 12 year old black girl (probation and community service only) despite clear video evidence.

- A proposition by California Republicans to bar illegal immigrants from any form of public assistance.

- A black man killed by the NYPD after reaching for what was believed to be a gun (it wasn’t).

- A woman (Anita Hill) testifies in front of an all white GOP Senate judiciary committee regarding sexual assault allegations against a Supreme Court Nominee.

Twenty fucking years later and here we are, still dealing with the same old shit.

Along the same lines as my last comment, turns out letting a total neophyte take complete charge of important international partnerships is probably not a great idea.

Jared just acts like a dude with only marginal skills still trying to impress his father-in-law after years of marriage to the favorite daughter. In that quest, he overextends himself and makes egregious errors. Now, if it were a private matter, I wouldn’t care. But Jared pushed his way into a situation that is normally (and wisely) handled by professionals in the foreign service, and single-handedly managed to fuck up an entire nation (Saudi Arabia) and international relations between it, the USA and one of our allies. Plus. he may have gotten someone killed.

One possibility being discussed is that the Saudis helped Kushner get a series of very large loans.

And that the Kashoggi incident plus the passing of intelligence that led to the Ritz Carlton imprisonment of 200 Saudis earlier this year, many presumably secret US informants, was the payback.

The other popular bumper sticker was “David Duke for Ovener”.

And I’m off to bed. We’ll see what Dog hath wrought in Florida tomorrow. I fear it will be pretty awful, with property damage in the billions. That was one hell of a blow.

I really hope that the death toll remains as low as it now appears, that people in the strike zone bugged out when they could. But BWS is going to lose Mr. BWS for a couple of weeks (again), I fear. At least 400,000 accounts are down, at least that many people without power to their homes. It’ll take a while to fix that mess, and FEMA has no money.

There was an episode of Fear the Walking Dead that a hurricane rerouted some rivers, leaving two of our boys stranded on what used to be a house on a hill and now it’s an island.

There they were safe there from zombies for the same reason they were stranded on the island… because every time the zombies tried to cross the river towards them, the alligators got another free meal.

Better Call Saul spoilers ahead:

In season four’s finale, we see some big things happen. Jimmy takes a big step in becoming Saul Goodman, big step. Mike takes a big step in becoming Gus Fring’s right-hand man and personal “cleaner,” big step.

AMC ordered a fifth season. Another 10 episodes.

What happened to Nacho? What’s going to happen to Kim? What about Howard?

And Lalo. That guy. He’s too fuckin’ smooth for his own good, he probably already fucked up big time by leaving evidence at the murder of a clerk at a check-cashing store. Or not? We never see him in Breaking Bad. Lalo is smart and resourceful, and deadly. But he also thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. He’s too smart for his own good, and it’ll be his undoing next season, I guess.

Exactly. Looks like rough times ahead for the UK. Yesterday, the DUP threatened to blow up their informal coalition with the Tories over Brexit and now PM May is gonna try to sell a final deal with her party, which is itself divided over Brexit.

Another major newspaper with an op-ed hot take, this time the Chicago Tribune on “liberal hypocrisy”:

Burning books like ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is the honest next step for the anti-Kavanaugh left (John Kass).

Hey chowderhead, a few points.

a) It’s conservatives who burn books (and destroy disco or Dixie Chicks albums, or throw their coffeemakers out of windows, or burn their athletic gear), not liberals.
2) A story about an African-American man being defended by a lawyer accused of rape in the Great Depression against a racist judicial system doesn’t make liberals “hypocrites.”

This is a slighly more sophisticated argument of the “Kavanaugh deserves due process” argument of the past couple weeks. Again, bonehead, this was a job interview, not a criminal trial.

In an actual criminal trial (or a fictitious one, as in “To Kill a Mockingbird”), the police actually get to do an investigation, lawyers get cross-examination and discovery of evidence, &c.

“… Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson, a George H.W. Bush nominee, forwarded more than a dozen misconduct complaints to the chief justice after determining they were substantive enough that they needed to be investigated by judges outside the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, where Kavanaugh was serving as a judge.

“The situation is highly unusual, legal experts and several people familiar with the matter said,” The Washington Post explained on Saturday. “Never before has a Supreme Court nominee been poised to join the court while a fellow judge recommends that a series of misconduct claims against that nominee warrant review.”

Chief Justice Roberts had been sitting on the complaints for weeks, refusing action before Kavanaugh was confirmed and sworn in to the Supreme Court on Saturday.

… “Roberts says he received the ethics complaints beginning September 20th, but did not act on referrals until today,” Baier added. …”

I agree. His behavior at the hearings revealed a lot about his personality and temperament. Being his law clerk must not be a fun job at all, because he probably throws temper tantrums in the office, too. And Mrs K probably knew he was lying to the Senators.

I’m not sure how Catholic Mrs K is, so I don’t know if divorce is within the realm of possibilities open to her. Even if she could contemplate it, she’d be under a lot of pressure not to embarrass her asshole husband, an Associate Justice, by dumping him.

I also presume he still drinks to excess, maybe with finer stuff than cheap beer, and manages only to appear sober when in public.

The whole bit is about driving up base enthusiasm, which is usually their ace in the hole and yet they’re flagging this year despite the “Kavanaugh Bump” that they keep trying to play up despite most polls now showing it as a fleeting blip. They would have been better served by his withdrawing his nomination or Trump being “forced” to do so than pushing it through, as they now have had their ragegasm and don’t really have much of anything to run on besides “Democrats R Bad.”

scmp.com

Not only were their sales figures grim for September, but the seven-day national holiday last week also brought at least two fangnao incidents - when homeowners protest against price cuts offered by developers to new buyers.

These protests are often directed at sales offices, with varying levels of intensity - from throwing rocks to holding banners and putting up funeral wreaths. As home ownership has remained the most important channel of investment for urban households in China in the past decade, price cuts have become increasingly unacceptable and a cause for social unrest.

In eastern Jiangxi province last week, angry homeowners who paid full price for units at the Xinzhou Mansion residential project in Shangrao attacked the Country Garden sales office after finding out it had offered discounts to new buyers of up to 30 per cent.

A similar incident took place in suburban Shanghai, where the same developer slashed prices at another project called One Mansion by a quarter.

Right now, the only people pissed off are people who bought property expecting values to rise forever. If the Chinese economy worsens, there will be more angry people taking to the streets, and Papa Xi may not be regarded as a hero for very long.

The sheer amount of animosity toward the Clintons is something I will still never understand.

It could be easily described in five words: “The one that got away.” An entire generation of journalists cut their teeth digging through dumpsters and shaking down witnesses in pursuit of the “Clinton Crime Family” and many still feel bitter that all their hard work amounted to nothing more than boosted poll numbers for Bill and a successful Senate run for Hillary.

For the GOP, it was an opportunity to “balance the scales,” to finally get out from under the dual specters of Watergate and Iran-Contra. They had it all bet on going one step further: Not just impeaching Bill, but removing him from office in such a public fashion that the public would never doubt his guilt. So to not only fail at that, but to take it in the pants at the voting booth that same year was a level of humiliation they’ve never been able to forgive.

Yes and no. Yes, Hillary is likely never to taken seriously as a candidate for a future political run and their political stature is reduced from what it was. But they still retain such a strong appeal that the media and the GOP continue to obsess over them. They wanted so badly for Hillary to shuffle off out of the limelight after Election Night ‘16 and it galls them something fierce that she hasn’t. Nothing pisses off a bully more than when his victims refuse to be cowed.

My mom, who was in her late 70s at the time, told me she liked Bill Clinton and really couldn’t understand why some people hated him so much. She said he seemed like a nice guy. She died before the Monica Lewinsky “scandal” and the unsuccessful impeachment proceedings, but I have a feeling she would not have changed her mind. Mom was not especially political, and like many other Americans, just judged politicians by a gut feeling. The way I see it, the GOP and the anti-Clinton brigade entirely misjudged the American voters’ reaction to the Lewinsky affair. They were unable to create the kind of visceral revulsion to things Clinton among the voters, because most voters (like my Mom) could see it was just partisan politics and not worth getting upset about.

The GOP also misjudged voters’ reaction to Nixon post-Watergate. My Dad, who was a lifelong Republican until then, soured on Nixon when it became clear Nixon was a crook. He did not like Carter, probably voted for Reagan and HW Bush, but I also suspect he voted for Clinton.

Fast forward to 2015-16. The GOP really misjudged voter response to Trump, and Trump’s tractability. His popularity obviously confounded all his primary opponents, and TBH, the Democrats, too. And I suspect the GOP now thinks Trump will remain popular long enough to keep their majority in Congress. Methinks otherwise. Most voters are getting tired of his horseshit.

And that really speaks to the other thing that pisses them off about Bill, that despite everything they’ve thrown at him he still retains his popularity even among independent voters. The Bushes enjoyed a similar level of popularity, Dubya more so after 9/11, but they made so many bad calls that it was hard to convince the public that criticism aimed at them was a partisan “plot.” And Donny? They found themselves a guy so crooked, that the public has no problem believing the worst about him or at least entertaining it. They seriously overestimated how far he’d be able to go with this “populism” schtick once he actually took office.

Democrats should be embarrassed as fuck that Bob Menendez is on the ballot for re-election. His corruption, even by New Jersey standards, is despicable for moral and ethical reasons. But also for pragmatic strategic reasons — his existence in the caucus provides the R’s with an unlimited bucket of “whatabouts” for all occasions.

nah. i no longer care about us being virtuous. clearly it isn’t shaming the other side. as we now realize, Obama should have just forcefully inserted Garland onto the supreme court after about 8 months of delays from Republicans. The whole “I can’t believe you aren’t upholding your side of the bargain” schtick did nothing at all for us. Sometimes, when the bully kicks you, it’s time to stop trying to explain to them that they aren’t upholding the best traditions, and it’s time to grab them by the hair and drown them, if that’s what it takes. And if we have to go back to actual Democratic machines keeping their thumbs in the eyes of Republican carpetbaggers and grifters, then that’s what we do.

A Formula 1 driver got a g-force reading of 28G’s in this crash. Sure, it was only momentary, but that means he was probably in the 9G area a good part of the time the car was flipping and rolling.

By the way, he got out and walked away. Raced the next day.

The new “halo” above the cars cockpit probably helped a lot too.

Trump: Nunes should get Medal of Freedom for Russia push back (Politico, more at the link):

President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that Rep. Devin Nunes deserves the Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor — for his controversial efforts at pushing back against the Russia investigation.

“If this all turns out like everyone thinks it will, Devin Nunes should get the Medal of Honor,” Trump said, later correcting himself that Nunes (R-Calif.) should receive the Medal of Freedom, not the Medal of Honor, which is only awarded for military service. “He is really, what he has gone through and his bravery.”

There are millions of divorced Catholics.

If she needs to leave him to save her kids and put them in a better environment, she can get a divorce.

They hated him because he believed in equal rights for African Americans and gays (marriage equality was not on the horizon at that time). They hated him because his wife was a feminist; he lost his first bid at reelection for governor at least partly because Hillary did not take his name — she then changed from Rodham to Clinton and he won the next round.

The GOP had already morphed into the racist organization we see today and they had no toleration for those who threatened their goal at a permanent Republican Presidency — remember that the GOP won 5 of the 6 Presidential elections prior to 1992 and everyone thought that Bush 41 had a lock on 1992 because of his victory in the first Iraq war. Prominent Democrats were not interested in challenging Bush because of this certainty. Indeed, in the summer of 1991 I recall my boss asserting that Bush was guaranteed victory because his positives were so high — my response then was that “Things change”.

The theocratic con-men that are considered to be leaders in the Conservative subculture have made the Conservative sheep extremely dangerous due to the constant fire-hose of bigotry that substitutes for news in their subculture.

That doesn’t seem right. Doesn’t everyone have Netflix? For anyone but a pirate, it offers a lot for $11/mo if you don’t use 4K, and $14/mo with 4K.

No thank you. I refuse to pay anyone for streaming. If it isn’t on Youtube or otherwise free I do without it. I have better uses for my money.

It seems to be more mainstream outside the deep south than it used to be. To Southerners it seems normal, but as someone who lives in civilization, it is not normal.

Yet conservatives will tell you that divorce is evil and people should always stay together to work things out.

There was no way Hillary Clinton could have won that one with the RWNJs. Stay, they pillory her for staying with (name some wingnut claim about Bill). Leave, she’s destroying the family and a scourge on all American families.

That’s what a Conservative leader does. It’s one of the perks of participating in a misogynistic subculture, where women exist to be used and abused by a man.

So much of what’s wrong in this country comes from a poisonously regressive subculture that doesn’t like equal rights.

Then even YouTube live is better for you. I don’t watch any sports, but I do watch a lot of TV, but I mostly use Netflix for when my Plex server is down.

I am currently using DirectvNow with an Amazon Fire TV. I also have Fox, ESPN, YouTube apps. I liked the channel lineup better from DirectvNow.

And, they have improved their delivery since I first signed up. Haven’t had any issues in two months or more now (knock on wood).

As a reminder, Georgia voter registrations still have a “race” box which must be ticked.

I can’t imagine why so many more African-Americans are being struck from the rolls by the guy in charge of that who is also running for governor against an African-American.
