Warning: Funk May Be Closer Than It Appears: Cory Henry & the Funk Apostles: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Oct. 5, 2018 | Felix Contreras — There’s so much joy in the sound of the Hammond organ, especially for those of us of a certain age. Hearing it can transport you to the early ’70s, when every rock band seemed to have one in its arsenal: The Allman Brothers, Santana, Deep Purple. In the hands of true masters — like the late Billy Preston and the very-much-alive Booker T. Jones — the organ can be a melodic, funky rhythm machine.

Cory Henry’s name belongs in the same breath as the Hammond organ masters of the past. The instrument creates the central sound of his dynamic, neo-soul- and funk-infused musical identity, and he opens his turn behind the Tiny Desk with what feels like an encore: the full-on soul assault of “Love Will Find a Way.” The song twists and turns, then winds up as a full-on celebration — and it’s only the first song in his set.

Henry’s keyboard skills are on full display during a synth solo in “Trade It All,” which also spotlights his entire band. To my mind, they’d have sounded right at home on Stax Records in the ’70s — no small accomplishment. “Send Me a Sign” then showcases some of the roots of Henry’s songwriting; it’s inspired by church sermons that bloom into group sing-alongs. Just another way Cory Henry digs way back to give us something new and exciting.

“Love Will Find a Way”
“Trade It All”
“Send Me Sign”

Trying to engage with people regarding the Proud Boys shit that went down last night. Running into 90% of folks either blaming it on Antifa like Fox wanted, or ‘both sides same things’. And these are younger folks too, my age or younger, with a disturbing amount fully on the bandwagon behind the Proud Boys and the like, and the rest either apathetic or fully behind the ‘both sides same thing’. Even when I pointed out that groups like ‘ANtifa’ never got open support from any Dem campaigns the same way the Proud Boys and the like get, they turn it around like ‘oh, it’s only because there’s no identified leaders, if there were, Dems would love them’.

I’m fucking exhausted. I really fucking am.

Damn, Cory and The Funk Apostles have it going on.

Each of those tunes grew and grew and got more and more funky, more soul and more gospel as they went.

Love the bass player, he sets a nice foundation with his lines. Corey and other keyboard player work really well together. Great band overall, and all having fun too.

That is one of the finest of the Tiny Desk shows yet, and they are all pretty good.

Thanks for putting that one up Charles.

Does anyone see/hear candidate ads in your area of the country not identifying themselves directly with their party and saying they are working to be bipartisan and party doesn’t matter?

I’ve heard a few Ohio Republicans use it and even Danny O’Connor the Democrat running for Ohio District 12 Rep (again…versus Troy Balderson) says he is working for everyone and is independent of thought.

But O’Connor is trying to take a strong Republican district, so his independence makes a bit of sense.

The other Republicans seem to be distancing themselves in races Republicans have won. That is very different. And it shows that at least in Ohio, there must be a need to run away from Trumpism.

I have some me time after several very intense days in rural Japan. (Several insanely good meals.) We went to small villages in mountainous rural Japan collectively called Gokanosho. We stayed at a ryokan and the owner of the ryokan is the 49th generation to live in the village. He also possesses a family samurai sword and a smaller sword that could be used to commit suicide. He displayed both of those for us and we got to heft them.

That was respect. What Gavin McInnes did was disgusting! I should turn on the TV at the top of the hour to see if it’s being reported here.

The Civil War was about government…namely several state governments arguing that their residents had the “right” to keep human beings in bondage and the federal government could not tell them otherwise. Which is why the Confederate Constitution is effectively a copy-and-paste of the US Constitution with a section involving that “right” to own slaves edited in.

There are three Democrats running for office in my county … two for the City of Bayard school board and me for my village board.

The Brexiteers (who are really just Trumpers with a better accent) are really pushing hard on PM May to not go with a “backstop” on Ireland.

This now we see clearly what the goal was of the foreign (read Russian) money that went into the Brexiteer pot.

Namely, to break up the UK.

Or at least cause the return of “the troubles”, which will throw the UK into internal angst and make it less effective on a global stage.

Well, here’s the idea of flipping racism on its head: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton successfully argued in a Texas court that the Indian Child Welfare Act is racist in intent, because it prohibits white families from adopting Native children without the tribe’s permission.

Forcibly transferring children from one group to another is defined by the UN as genocide. Can’t let the UN get in the way of a good conservative genocide though (see also taking children from parents at the border).

This case had already been settled out of court between the Native and White families involved, but that didn’t stop Ken Paxton from going forward anyway:

In the Texas case, US District Judge Reed O’Connor overturned the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the federal law governing the adoption of Native American children, because you see the law’s intent of keeping Native American kids with Native American families is “racist,” according to the twisted logic of a Republican attorney general. O’Connor held the law — put in place in 1978 to curb what tribes considered a longstanding policy of decimating tribes by adopting kids out to white families — actually violated the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. (It is in fact conforming to one of the UN’s definitions of “genocide”: forcibly transferring children of one group to another group.)

Signed on to the case were the Heritage Foundation and the Goldwater Institute on Texas’s behalf. Interestingly, the Goldwater Institute noted that Senator Barry Goldwater voted for the act when it was passed in the Carter Administration.

The tribes involved in the case issued a joint statement, which makes it look like they will appeal. However, with all the conservative judges being pushed through as fast as the GOP can, it looks like Native genocide is going to be the law of the land (again).

I imagine a lot of people didn’t watch Season 2, because Season 1 was such a tiresome slog. I watched it more out of a sense of obligation, since I like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones - and by extension The Defenders. It WAS better, without the stupid Undead Dad subplot, and with Danny a little more humble, and able to manage more facial expressions.

Yup. Ken Paxton (R-indicted felon) also argued a X Amendment argument which the judge upheld, in that forcing the states to rewrite their state laws to comply with Federal law violated the X Amendment.

Nevermind the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution.

If this argument is upheld, then the Supremacy Clause could be subverted for other wingnut causes (abortion, taking the vote away from minorities or imposing poll taxes and voter tests, who knows maybe slavery - the original states’ rights cause).

When she and Rango are playing, she’s all over the place - floor to chair to couch to ottoman to floor, sneak through the gap and attack from the rear… I can tell Rango enjoys it, because he’ll also just ignore her sometimes, so he’s making noise and all that for fun.

Plus he doesn’t have teeth enough to do her much damage anymore!

Earlier this week, the Staunton School District board in Virginia voted to change the name of Robert E. Lee High School.

Yes, the perception of Lee as a “hero” is definitely changing. Too bad we have a president who’s fighting the change instead of advancing it.

Except Scott Morrison is one of them. He’s associated with Hillsong, which is a huge evangelical outfit with many tentacles (there’s a Hillsong two miles from my house). The uproar will be muted, I believe.

My favorite ‘name change’ involved no name change, it just changed whose name it was, from some slave-owning dude named ‘King’ to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. [King County, WA, where Seattle is.] Nobody had to get new stationery or anything.

Like all history, the march of times scrapes back the efforts to idolize and reveals the men underneath. The idolization of Lee as some “Southern gentleman” who committed treason in the name of his beloved Virginia and fought a brilliant but losing battle against long odds is dying out as the shine comes off the “Lost Cause.”

There was a good, but infuriating NPR piece on Kentucky a couple of days ago. First they started with the horsey Keeneland people. Who do they support? Surprise, surprise: Trump: “he’s getting things done!” Then they interviewed a black woman in the center of Lexington (very near where I worked for a couple of years). She kind of implied that things were better in her childhood when neighborhoods were more segregated; all the black Lexingtonians lived in that area and went to the same churches, restaurants, and theater (where people like Duke Ellington played). Would she support a Republican? Hell naw. And then Steve Inskeep said, “across the street is a new French bakery, so we knocked on the door of a young white couple….” The neighborhood was being hipsterized when I lived there: artisan donuts, barbershops for white people, etc. And sure as shit: “I’m so sick and tired of being told that I have to settle for the lesser of two evils….”

And that is how you lose one of the only Blue areas in Kentucky.

Exclusive: High Rate of Absentee Ballot Rejection Reeks of Voter Suppression (Goes to WhoWhatWhy, more at the link):

Pearlie Williams is an elderly black woman who lives in Gwinnett, Georgia’s most diverse county, both racially and economically. Like so many other African Americans who are excited about the possibility of making Democrat Stacey Abrams the first black female governor in US history — but are worried about the reliability of voting machines — she cast an absentee ballot this year.

Her ballot has been rejected — a fate she shares with many other people of color this year.

Worse yet, Williams had no idea that her vote had not been counted.

(and)

Gwinnett County leads in rejecting mail-in ballots, with 398 turned away as of Thursday, according to numbers reported by the secretary of state’s office. Despite having only 12 percent of the state’s overall mail-in ballots, the county is responsible for 40 percent of statewide rejections so far.

Leading once again with the note that if conservative ideas could stand on their own, they would lead with those ideas. They don’t and never did, which is why conservatives are opposed to democratic elections.

The Portuguese Met Office already has the storm on their composite radars. I imagine the NHC will pass along information they have, but the second it goes ashore it is no longer in the USA’s area of tracking responsibility.

Well, Savannah’s overreaction to the googly eye stickers on the Nathaniel Greene statue is getting the city trolled from around the world.

washingtonpost.com

From afar, the craft-store stick-on eyes were barely visible. Up close, though, they rendered Greene’s monument almost comically alive.

Savannah officials seemed to acknowledge the effect, but they also try to nip public reaction to it in the bud.

“It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter,” city officials wrote. “In fact, it’s a crime.”

They then asked for anyone with information (… eyewitnesses?) to report tips to the Savannah Police Department.

City officials may have stirred up more than they had intended. In two days, the post has been shared nearly 13,000 times, and attracted comments from far beyond Savannah city limits. Most people poked fun at what they called an overreaction and said the result would surely be copycat “googly eye bandits.”

“So I’m not a part of this community or anything, but you guys do realize you just dared your entire city to googly eyes all of your monuments right?” a Facebook user named Greg Lamb wrote. “Just pick the eyes off and move on.”

Others couldn’t help chiming in with all sorts of googly eye-inspired puns.

“Who is Nathaniel Greene? Never mind. I’ll Googly him,” one person wrote.

“Don’t vandal-eyes,” another commented.

“…Building a $1.68 billion aluminum rolling mill touted as the economic savior of Eastern Kentucky requires a $1 billion federal loan, $500 million in credit from the German government and as much as $400 million from a crowdfund-style stock sale over the internet, Braidy Industries says in new financial filings.

The company, partially owned by Kentucky taxpayers, had a ceremonial groundbreaking for its promised Braidy Atlas mill near Ashland this summer. At that event, CEO Craig Bouchard said his company has “support on Wall Street that just generally blows me away.”

However, the company still lacks financing to start construction, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings that became publicly available late Wednesday.

Kentucky taxpayers own an undisclosed percentage of the company thanks to an unusual $15 million direct investment arranged by Gov. Matt Bevin in the closing days of the 2017 legislative session. In addition to the $15 million buy-in, the state has committed $5 million in road-related funding and $2 million for skills training meant to benefit the company. Braidy is also eligible for as much as $15 million in performance-based tax incentives.

Facebook Finds The Trolls Are Coming From Inside The House (Wonkette, more at the link):

Facebook just unsheathed its banhammer and started bashing hundreds of accounts and pages for breaking its rules. Facebook says most of the accounts came from US-based spam networks that were pushing political agendas, just like Russia did in 2016. What Facebook didn’t say was they also kicked out several dozen accounts from a Russian data firm that was scraping profiles, just like Cambridge Analytica, except for the Russian government. It sounds really bad, but Facebook says it makes the world a better place.

In a blog post on Thursday Facebook said it uncovered 559 pages and 251 accounts run by Americans that were pushing disinformation with clickbait spam. According to Mark Zuckerberg’s robots, this is one of the biggest cullings of domestic accounts, ensnaring both left and right-wing groups for creating fake social networks.

One of the most notable accounts taken down was Right Wing News, a blog run by conservative troll John Hawkins. Facebook says RWN was smothering people like a teenaged Brett Kavanaugh with disinformation and spam in order to get more ad money. In a nutshell: RWN would buy ads to promote its fake news stories about Dr. Christine Blasey Ford smearing Justice Rapey McPrivilage, and target them towards their supporters. Then they’d use fake accounts to click their own ads and stories, generating more ad money and increasing the likelihood that their bullshit would appear in random Newsfeeds. This increased their chances of reaching the racist uncles and shitlords who share this crap on Facebook. It’s kind of like a Russian nesting doll wearing a MAGA, underneath all layers is a little troll with tiny hands.
