They Might Be Giants (Or Commies): “The Communists Have the Music”

Please post this video on your social media and be sure to include #AynRandSandwich. We hope to have it trending soon.

I got handed an Ayn Rand sandwich
straight from a can it tasted so bland
I asked a lass to pass me a glass
of Engel’s Conditions of the Working Class

right away they dragged me to the committee
to explain my un-American activity
they’re gonna see they made a mistake
if they’d only let me play my mixtape

I’m not partial to the martial
or the plutocrats in their beaver hats
and the fascists have the outfits
but I don’t care for the outfits
what I care about is music
and the communists have the music

I hear a melody
and just as suddenly
I know who I’m
supposed to be

I don’t need a rationale
to sing the Internationale
I only need to plug in the headphone jack
so I can listen to my backing track

I’m not jealous of the zealous
or anarchics with guitar picks
and the fascists have their outfits
but I don’t care for the outfits
what I care about is music
and the communists have the music
yes the communists have the music
oh the communists have the music

I hear a melody
and just as suddenly
I know who I’m
supposed to be

I’m not partial to the martial
or the plutocrats in their beaver hats
and the fascists have the outfits
but I don’t care for the outfits
what I care about is music
and the communists have the music

We had the first rain of the season here in Los Angeles. Whenever the first rainstorm hits you usually smell petroleum from the wet roads but this time I didn’t smell that odor at all!

Need to get my mind off of the political insanity. Back to food.

Damn, look at this cookie. Goldbely says it’s The Rock’s favorite cookie, called “Da Half Baked Cookie”.

It’s a giant 8oz cookie with Oreo, Reese’s, Snickers, stuffed in a giant chocolate chip cookie with malt. Bigger than a Big Mac. I’m just looking at it and I need to grab the insulin needle!

And I saw a picture of The Rock munching on this!

You know, the raging TP people and flat-out nazi racists are bad, but they’re not the ones who are really killing the country. That would be people like a lady I know, nearing 70, who is a born-again Southern Baptist and really in some ways the best sort of Christian. She does many good and charitable works that take a great deal of time and effort on her part, including doing good things for my very aged mother. But her first way of evaluating other people begins with whether they’re “saved” or not, and then strays off into the serious weeds. She told me that she voted for Trump because he was a great businessman. When I asked her how a great businessman could bankrupt two casinos, she said she didn’t know anything about that, had never even heard about it because she didn’t read or watch the news, although her husband watches Fox. When I told her that she could check out the casino bankruptcies on the Net, she said we’d just have to agree to disagree.

There’s a wall of not only ignorance but also of desire to remain ignorant that is far worse for us than any wall we could build along the Mexican border, or the Canadian border, or on every coastline in between.

I have no idea what to do about it, beyond tossing this inconsequential little post into the stream.

Was watching Colbert last night, a rerun but a fairly recent one. He reported that Cynthia Nixon had ordered a bagel with cream cheese, lox, and tomato, not a particularly bad order except for the extraneous tomato, but that the bagel itself was cinnamon raisin. If I still lived in NY, I would have regurgitated my prospective vote for her.

I am trying to figure out how a profit can be made from Refugee camps.

Obviously there’d be no direct government funding and I’m the sure the UN and other international groups would not be keen to fund companies to do this. On the plus side there’d be little to no competition to deal with for anyone who did dare enter such a market.

You’re talking about hundreds or thousands of hungry, scared and angry people displaced from their homes and jobs and families. Some may have some money on their person but there’s a slim chance of establishing any kind of continuous cash flow there.

There would have to be regulation and oversight that could potentially turn into a complicated diplomatic and legal mess and let’s not even get into how dicey managing the security situation would be.

These places are challening enough to operate, and adding a profit motive would make the problem worse, not better.

Also, how the fuck do you market a Refugee camp?

I guess it’s like our prison-industrial complex. Some people are getting rich selling tent cities to house kidnapped children now, so extend the concept to refugees. After your investment in advanced weaponry drives them out of their countries, there’s still money to be made.

In truth I think that the best they had for the war they were in was Longstreet. But of course he was stomped into the mud after the war by the whole Lost Cause crowd for not kissing Marse Robert’s behind.

There is much in what you say. I think he was the most militarily competent general they had—but in the situation they were in, competence wasn’t enough. They needed someone who would take the desperate chances that Longstreet wouldn’t.

Of course, Lee went too far in that direction. Then the Union finally found a general who wasn’t spooked by it, and just kept on pushing.

Japan is an island, and not a very large one, and rising sea levels will create all kinds of stresses on infrastructure, housing, and agriculture. So, it’s now wonder the government take climate change seriously.

But Leo Sampson is on a break and visiting his home in the UK, and checked in on two projects in Cornwall. I think you’ll like ‘em. The first is a floating restaurant and excursion boat captained by two women, and the other is his mate’s rebuild of an old North Sea fishing boat to become a floating garbage collection vessel, Plus, there are puppies! I know there’s good people in Texas, hell, we got a great Texas good people contingent here at LGF. But this Coloradan has observed Texas politics over the years. I’ve watched the state send Rick Perry to Austin for three terms, and then elect Greg Abbott with Dan Patrick as his Lieutenant Governor. In that election in 2014 (a mid-term year, just like now) voter turnout in Texas was 33%.

GOP yanks funding for ‘Putin’s favorite congressman’ Rohrabacher as campaign collapses

It’d be interesting to see what internal poll or information the Republicans used to make that decision.

According to the public polls the race is dead even, and according to 538, the election is likely to be 50.8 to the Democratic candidate 49.2 to Rohrabacher.

Of course the decision might be due just to being able to spend money more effectively elsewhere, but it’s really not a good sign for Republicans if they think races that are within 1.6% are not effectively recoverable.

The well-regulated militia:

4 dead, 1 injured in shooting at toddler’s birthday party

An altercation between two families at a toddler’s birthday party in Texas led to a shooting that left four men dead and one injured, authorities said.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at a 1-year-old’s party in Taft on Saturday, said Sgt. Nathan Brandley of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Police are looking for two suspects they believe were involved in the shooting, he added.

Hasn’t a care in the world for anyone except self - and the media NEVER calls him out. They raged at President Obama after hurricane Sandy - trump has had 3 major hurricanes
- Puerto Rico will NEVER recover
- Houston is still struggling
- Michael is wiping out communities in multiple states

trump does nothing - he’s moved all the money to pay for separating children from their parents.

Weird?

You must not be very familiar with They Might Be Giants. They’ve been writing great little word play songs since the early 80s.

At one time they had a phone number you could call and hear the song of the day.

Here is what is probably their most recognizable “hit” song.

[Just Dance 4] Istanbul - They Might Be Giants

And another…

BIRDHOUSE IN YOUR SOUL - THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS ( Complete Original Video )

Part of what happened with Gavin McInnis’s group’s attacks last night doesn’t seem to make it into the news … why they were there in the first place.

Also, it appears McInnis was wearing glasses to give him the appearance of racist caricature “slant-eyes.”

I’m familiar with “Istanbul.” That said, They Might Be Giants just doesn’t seem to grab my fancy (including “Istanbul”).

It wasn’t the wordplay of the song so much as the video itself I was referring to as “weird.”

Everyone has their taste in music though, and there’s enough room for everyone. Mr. Johnson certainly provides a wide variety of clips of impressive artists here.

In truth I think that the best they had for the war they were in was Longstreet. But of course he was stomped into the mud after the war by the whole Lost Cause crowd for not kissing Marse Robert’s behind.

Absolutely. Stonewall Jackson was a far better field general than Lee was. Lee’s genius was administration. Once Jackson was killed, Lee’s army became Nebraska under Scott Frost.

Officially there is no statement on who did the graffiti. The Reich-Wing is trying to get out in front of it and paint it as “left wing” or Antifa vandalism so either a) If that comes out as true, then they can crow they were right, or b) if they were wrong, none of their supporters will believe the actual accounts.

In other words, propaganda, it’s a helluva drug.

The vandalism to the Manhattan Republican Club occurred several hours before the event.

Police are searching for two vandals who allegedly smashed the windows of the GOP’s Manhattan clubhouse and scrawled anarchist symbols on its doors, then left a note putting the establishment “on notice” for its decision to host far-right provocateur and Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes on Friday.

An NYPD spokesperson says they received a call at around 2 a.m. Friday concerning two figures in dark clothing outside the Metropolitan Republican Club on the Upper East Side. When officers arrived, they found multiple windows broken at the location and glue on the locks, along with bright orange anarchist symbols spray-painted on the doors. Two bricks were also found on the sidewalk outside, police said.

Elsewhere in line, Tracey Simmons, 42, was angrier. “They’re doing us like they did New Orleans,” she said. Ms. Simmons, an educator, said she was worried that poorer residents would eventually be moved out, much as they were after Hurricane Katrina. For the time being, she was frustrated by the complicated game of survival that was playing out.

Just got back from Lowes to pick up a few items and some wall primer.

I grabbed a cart, went to the paint department put a couple items in the cart and then walked around the corner of the isle to look at something leaving the cart at the end of the previous (next) isle.

I went to grab my cart and it was gone. WTF?

I looked around confused if I left it where I thought I had, checked the next isle over, no cart. Went back to where I thought I left it looked at the shelf by where the cart was and saw the items I had put in the cart on the shelf…not where they came from.

I then looked at the people at the paint counter and saw a young couple that I had seen in the isle where I left the cart. They now had a cart when they didn’t when I first saw them.

I asked if they took my cart. The guy said no, then the young lady said we thought it was abandoned. What a couple. Lying and then trying to excuse the lie and taking the cart.

I said there was stuff in it how did you think it was abandoned?

“We didn’t see anyone by the cart”

I know they saw me with cart before I walked around to the other side of the isle.

And so I said: you took the items out threw them on the shelf creating work for someone and took the cart you clearly saw me with just a minute ago.

“Don’t get all upset man” said the guy. He was laughing at me.

I made them take the crap out of the cart and then I quickly pulled it away and went on.

Grrrrrr. Humans!

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Air Force explosive experts removed a World War II-era artillery rocket that was being used as a garden decoration in a Florida neighborhood.

tcpalm.com reports the Army Corps of Engineers were working in a Vero Beach neighborhood Thursday when they noticed the 2-foot (0.6-meter) training rocket. They notified the explosives team at nearby Patrick Air Force Base. Members examined the rocket and said while it appeared to be disarmed it may still contain explosives.

Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City suffered “widespread catastrophic damage” and will require “extensive cleanup and repairs”, said base leaders.

Col. Brian Laidlaw told the 3,600 airmen stationed at the base just east of Panama City that he won’t ask them or their families to return until their safety is guaranteed. The base was evacuated in advance of the Category 4 storm that struck the Gulf Coast on Wednesday afternoon with 155 mph winds and a strong storm surge.

Iowa Newspaper Says GOP Congressman Spends all his Time With ‘Neo-Nazis’ and ‘Fascists’, Endorses Democrats Instead (Newsweek, more at the link):

Iowa’s largest and most influential newspaper, The Des Moines Register, slammed Representative Steve King (Republican - Iowa) in a scathing editorial that went also after the GOP as a whole.

The Register’s editorial board on Saturday endorsed voting for Democrats down the line, arguing that Republicans had failed to get anything good done despite controlling the both chambers of Congress and the White House.

But the strongest language in the piece was reserved for the race involving King, who has routinely made national headlines for accusations of racism and his penchant for running in the same circles as neo-Nazis.

They’re noting that Amy McGrath’s race in Kentucky would likely be a bellweather as to whether Democrats retake the US House.

It’s not so much that Ms. McGrath is the lynchpin in the race. It’s that Kentucky polls close at 6PM and her race will be the first reported.

She came from 40 points behind to win the Democratic primary, and is now polling even with Rep. Andy Barr.

Polling seems to indicate a statistical tie, which is why both the GOP and Dems are pulling out the big guns to support their candidates. It will come down to the GOTV effort by each campaign.

Senate Sunday at Wonkette:

US Sen. Martin Heinrich In HOTT ‘New Mexico Three-Way!’

The candidates are Senator Martin Heinrich (D), Mark Rich (R), and former governor Gary Johnson (L).

So now Heinrich is on track to beat Rich and Johnson, at least if mid-September polling holds up. There was some amusing drama around Johnson’s entry into the race, with the predictable call from the state GOP chair for Johnson to not be a splitter and please drop out (nope, he did not). But this being rightwing politics in 2018, a bunch of Libertarians and loon-leaning Republicans also called on Rich — again, the actual Republican nominee, to drop out so Johnson could defeat the evil Demmycrat and make New Mexico a Libertarian paradise. Johnson quickly got Rand Paul’s endorsement, too. At least early on, Rich seems to have hoped Johnson might actually split Democratic support for Heinrich, what with the old Libertarian wanna-legalize-pot position, but it would appear New Mexico Dems also noticed the part where Johnson wants to repeal Obamacare and privatize Medicare and Social Security. Imagine that.

How is this a threat? Apart from the context of your tweet, posting a picture of one’s Grandfather’s gravestone can only disturb in the sense that it’s basically a reminder that everyone is mortal.

It would have been a threat if it had been posted with a message like “Wish you were here”, but that’s clearly not the context here.

The newly-elected premier of Quebec in Canada has raised eyebrows by saying a crucifix hanging in the provincial legislature is not a religious symbol.

François Legault’s remarks come despite his government plan to ban civil servants from wearing items of clothing such as hijabs and the Jewish skullcap.

The policy has been widely criticised as it targets minority groups.

A 2008 report said the crucifix which has been hanging in the legislature since 1936 should be removed.

But the Quebec government refused to implement its findings.

I just got an E-mail from my county newspaper asking for a photograph of me for the voter guide they will print Tuesday.

I don’t have any recent photographs of me other than the silly photos taken this summer in Yukon.

I noted everyone in the county knows who the long-haired hippie who drives a Smart car and wears a paper trilby hat is. I sent along my wedding photo from 2007 (which is me in a striped shirt and jeans in an aspen grove in Colorado in a ghost town) and my last official Navy photo.

Fliers on 4 college campuses blame Jews for Kavanaugh assault allegations

Fliers blaming Jews for the sexual assault allegations against newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh were posted on two University of California campuses, Berkeley and Davis, as well as at Vassar and Marist colleges, both located in the same city in New York state.

“Every time some Anti-White, Anti-American, Anti-freedom event takes place, you look at it, and it’s Jews behind it,” the fliers discovered Monday read.

The flier shows an image of Kavanaugh surrounded by caricatures of Jewish members of the U.S. Senate with Stars of David drawn on their foreheads, as well as the Jewish billionaire George Soros, who has been accused of funding opposition to Kavanaugh. One of Kavanaugh’s accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, and the attorney for two others, Michael Avenatti, also are depicted with the words “Good Goy” written on their foreheads.

The fliers say they are “Brought to you by your local Stormer book club.”

Back home from Lubbock. It is probably the most pro-Trump city in the US now and, in many ways, an indication of things to come if Cheeto isn’t stopped. Antisemitism is rampant and open in the local gentry, crazed theocrats are mainstream, the John Birch Society practically runs the place.
It reminds me of something I have been thinking for a long time. The GOP is not primarily about the billionaire class, though it aligns itself with them in the pursuit of power. There are no billionaires in Lubbock, for example. It is about empowering the local gentry, the grifters and status seekers and cheap labor profiteers who find human rights and federal protections inconvenient to their push for hereditary privilege and absolute power over lesser mortals.
There is a kind of perverse populism in this. The petty aristocrats like to represent themselves as “little guys” standing up to “powerful interests” and federal tyranny. In a sense, they are right; they truly are small potatoes compared to the federal government or the NEA or big media.
It offends popular notions of individualism but the fact is that the world truly has changed during the upheavals of the past 3 centuries.* The true “little guys,” working people and the un-propertied, did win in many ways and, with many qualifications, great institutions like the federal government and big unions are the guardians of real freedom and equality.
Lubbock would declare a municipal religion and start publicly whipping non-conformists tomorrow if they ever stop thinking that the feds and the global media would land on their heads like an avalanche for it. This is what Republicans mean by tyranny, denying absolute power to the locally dominant. They know Trump is a degenerate and a crook, but he is the flawed tool they must use to achieve their objectives.

*Interestingly, in its semi-concealed members-only dogma, the JBS does put the origin of the “international [Jewish] conspiracy to destroy Christianity” in the 1660s. This “conspiracy” is the granddaddy of them all, the core of the onion, the central “evil” that the JBS purports to be resisting.

Lincoln didn’t have a phobia. He had a series of bad generals. Even GG Meade, victor of Gettysburg, failed to pursue the Army of Northern Virginia as it slunk back South. Lincoln famously chided Meade for this, saying it reminded him of an old woman shooing geese out of the yard.

Lincoln was cursed with lousy generals, and it took him several years to realize he actually understood better than they did what was needed.

Took a look at Nader’s Wiki page. I have never checked it out.

This paragraph cut from the 2000 election section is quite telling. I didn’t follow that election all that closely as in those days I was under the gun with my largest project for my employer which always came in late fall with it needing to be finished by Thanksgiving to get it all printed for the new year.

Some of the names were surprising, some not.

In October 2000, at the largest Super Rally of his campaign,[43] held in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, 15,000 people paid $20 each[44] to hear Nader speak. Nader’s campaign rejected both parties as institutions dominated by corporate interests, stating that Al Gore and George W. Bush were “Tweedledee and Tweedledum”. A long list of notable celebrities spoke and performed at the event including Susan Sarandon, Ani DiFranco, Ben Harper, Tim Robbins, Michael Moore, Eddie Vedder and Patti Smith. The campaign also had some prominent union help: The California Nurses Association and the United Electrical Workers endorsed his candidacy and campaigned for him.[45]

I tend to agree with those that a rapid pursuit was simply not going to work after Gettysburg. The Union Army was badly battered and had lost a LOT of senior experienced cadre. There was no tactical reserve sitting around to exploit this sort of thing. If he had tried, he might just as well gotten mauled running head long into rebel defense lines at the Potomac.

His fuck up with the Battle of the Crater is something else entirely.

There are a lot of repiles to Kruse about why can’t Burr speak his mind on this. Too many don’t seem to realize that since Burr is a government employee, the restrictions in the Constitution apply to him. He doesn’t have the same freedoms as private citizens because his job is to protect them.

It would have been a disaster to attempt to chase the Army of Northern Virginia with the increadably battered and damaged Army of the Patomic. All that would have happened is Lee would have been able to choose terrain of his liking and chewed the Union army to even greater shreds pissing away the change in situation bought at such great cost on Seminary and Cemetery Ridges.

Yesterday I was driving home and passed an SUV on the side of the road. Normally, I’ll stop and see if the person/people need assistance. However, this vehicle had a 3%er sticker in the window and TWO Ted Cruz for President stickers. Figured the person wouldn’t want help from a LIBRUL, so I kept driving.

Am I a terrible person?

It is very true that Lincoln chided Meade for not attacking Lee during the retreat.

However, I agree with Deirdre.

The specific incident was at the very end of the retreat. What remained of Lee’s Army was strongly entrenched along the Potomac. They were rebuilding washed out bridges to cross back into Virginia. To get there, the Confederates had used multiple roads.

The Union Army was scattered all over Pennsylvania and Maryland trying to figure out which road the Confederates took, and where they were actually headed. When the first Union troops found the Confederates, they scouted the Confederate positions and were highly impressed with how well the Confederates were fortified.

By the time the Union Army had concentrated enough troops to even consider attacking, everything but the rearguard had crossed over.

Additionally:
- Meade had only taken over the Army of the Potomac a few weeks previously; After the Campaign had begun. Many of his supposed subordinates did not view themselves as such.
- Fredricksburg, where the Army of the Potomac had been slaughtered while unsuccessfully attacking entrenched Confederate positions had occured barely 7 months previously.
- Many of the Union Troops around Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia were seperate commands that Meade could not touch. (A major reason Grant came east the next year, was to fix this problem.
- As Deirdre points out, the Army of the Potomac was badly shot up and fought out after the Battle of Gettysburg. (As was the Confederate Army, which lost thousands of soldiers during the retreat.)

Yeah, I hate that he has tainted her life with his presence, but she had scoliosis bad enough that she had surgery. Her dress was actually designed to show off the scar, and the doctors who had performed the surgery were at her wedding. She’s also a big activist for the hospital the surgery was as.
