The one MAJOR reason we have casinos in the USA is Canada legalized gaming before we did on a national scale.
We had Vegas.
Then Atlantic City.
Suddenly Casino Niagara popped up. Casino Windsor. Followed by Casino Canada from coast to coast. Most were set up across the border from the US, solely for the purpose of drawing US citizens across. Mostly the CN dollar was below the US dollar, so the allure was your buck was worth more than CN buck.
It worked. Niagara now has 3 casinos and the legal gambling age is 19 years of age,
21 in the states. Just for a base line.
BOOM.
Smell that?
It’s you, not in a state that has legalized cannibals even though legally the Feds outlaw it.
It’s called; LOOK AT ALL THE MONEY GOING OVER THERE.
So what’s the over/under on Federal legalization?
I say by mid 2020 cannabis is legal in all forms.
Why not? Look at Colorado. Turned into a seething cauldron of hell via pot.
The only twist in this is the corporations cornering the market. People need to be able to grow their own.
Bud needs to be legal. Flower. And grow.
Brewing beer at home was outlawed for decades.
Now we have the conundrum.
See you all tomorrow.

In the last thread, it was noted John Boehner says “there are Nazis in the House.”

Well, about that, an article from Huffington Post (caution for auto-play video designed to run up your data plan charges):

GOP Senate Candidate In Michigan Admits ‘Terrible Error’ For Showing Swastika In Ad

DETROIT (AP) — Republican U.S. Senate candidate John James of Michigan said Monday he made a “terrible error” by inadvertently showing a swastika in his campaign’s first TV ad of the general election.

The ad began airing two weeks ago and already was being phased out for a new one, James said, when a left-leaning blog and then the liberal advocacy group Progress Michigan brought attention to the image on Monday. It is briefly shown on a bulletin board in a school hallway while James talks off-screen about failing schools. He said the scene is from stock footage.

GOP Senate Candidate Accuses Arizona Rival Of ‘Treason’ In Debate

After nearly an hour of discussion about political issues, Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), who is running to replace retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake, called on her opponent Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s (D-Ariz.) to apologize for comments she made years ago when she was an antiwar activist.

According to CNN, Sinema discussed a hypothetical situation during a 2003 radio conversation with a libertarian activist on whether she would oppose him joining Taliban fighters. “I don’t care if you want to do that, go ahead,” Sinema, who was active in antiwar groups, told him.

“It’s treason,” McSally said in the debate.

I don’t have the email to report it, but I’ve gotten a bunch of these phishing emails pretending to be from Amazon recently — fake warnings that a package wasn’t delivered, or free Amazon gift cards. That kind of stuff. Most email programs show the addresses of any buttons in an email if you hover them, so if you see a web address that doesn’t start with a variation of amazon.com, it’s spam.

I’ve also been getting similar emails that appear to be from Apple, fake warnings of problems with billing, etc.

So always make sure you’re not about to click a button or a link to a spam site BEFORE clicking it.

I don’t have a Wells-Fargo account, and I sure wouldn’t use an unsolicited E-mail to sign into anything (that, and I don’t pay any bills on-line - that’s what cheques and the Post Office are for).

They do go to the FBI’s spam collection site: spam@uce.gov

They want the E-mail forwarded without any change to the subject or text, and forward all attachments to the E-mail.

Okay this is weird … the liberal on “The View” defending Donald Trump’s “horseface” remark about Stormy Daniels, and Meghan McCain defending Daniels.

huffingtonpost.com

Co-host Meghan McCain argued that — despite her initial skepticism about Daniels and her distaste for Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti — she was “totally won over” by Daniels’ arguments about “why she didn’t want to tell people she originally had an affair.”

“I thought she was very eloquent and stated her perspective very clearly. She was like, I have sex for money, but I’m not a liar. And I think that’s still 100 percent fair,” said McCain.

“I think that our ― whatever you want to say, because I had a lot of things to say about Michael Avenatti, and I, by the way, believe that he should pay her legal fees. I don’t think she should have to pay it. But I will say, it doesn’t matter anymore, because, when you’re calling a woman ‘horseface,’ all arguments we have are now negated.”

It’s absolutely “meh”. That bit about naming it after their Dad is a flat-out lie. Their Uncle, who owns Black’s in Lockhart, sued them over just using the name “Black’s BBQ”. So they added “Terry” in front of it.

Their smoking is inconsistent, their sauce is weak, their sides are mediocre, and their prices exceed their skill.

Oh, and their store is two blocks south of my house, with one residential street in between. In the winter, the smoke inundates the block just south of me because of the north wind. They got sued by the neighbors and have fought them tooth and nail over whether their living rooms smell like Q (they do).

Over at Crooks and Liars, where they are following up on the busload of African-American senior citizens who were marched off a bus and prevented from voting, they got the following response from the county:

After calling the County Clerk’s office twice today, I received the following statement for release:

October 15, 2018

For Immediate Release:

Jefferson County operates a Senior Center that provides meals and entertainment to senior citizens in Jefferson County three days per week. The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners has a long standing practice of not allowing political activities during normal business hours or at County sponsored activities. These senior citizens are under the complete care and supervision of Jefferson County while they are at the Senior Center. Jefferson County Administration felt uncomfortable with allowing Senior Center patrons to leave the facility in a bus with an unknown third party. Additionally, the event in question that took place at the Jefferson County Senior Center was led by the President of the Jefferson County Democratic Party and as such was considered a political event. No seniors at the Jefferson County Senior Center were denied their right to vote. In fact, Senior Center staff routinely arrange Jefferson County Public Transit to transport senior citizens to vote. Jefferson County invites and encourages all registered voters to vote from October 15-November 2 from 8 AM to 5 PM, October 27 from 9 AM to 4 PM and on election day November 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

I’ve avoided commenting on this so far, but Warren not consulting / coordinating with the CN before this weekend’s announcement was extremely idiotic and reckless.

Interestingly, the president of the tribal council is a Democrat.

Membership in the tribe (which she did not claim so why should she need to coordinate with them) involves not how much Cherokee blood you have, but whether you can trace your ancestry to a particular list of Natives compiled in the XIX Century.

As it turns out from her DNA test, she has more Native blood than the tribal president.

Bill John Baker was born in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, where his family has been for four generations. Of mixed ethnicity, like many Cherokee citizens, he is 1/32 (3.1%) Cherokee by blood.[2] He graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1969 and from Northeastern State University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and history.[3]

On a related topic, Henry Gates and associates have a program for school children that integrates DNA testing into family history research, to teach children both biology and history:

fyrclassroom.org

Gates himself carries a European Y chromosome, European mitochondria, and about half his autosomal DNA (which is what has most of the genes) are from his European ancestors.

But turn back the clock to the “beer summit”, and usual hatred from the bigots directed at Gates, as a way to condemn African Americans, without using the usual slurs.

Cherokee Nation citizenship law is set by tribal law. There is no minimum blood quantum required for citizenship. Tribal citizenship requires that you have at least one direct ancestor listed on the Dawes Final Rolls, a federal census of those living in the Cherokee Nation that was used to allot Cherokee land to individual citizens in preparation for Oklahoma statehood in 1907.

To be eligible for Cherokee Nation tribal citizenship, you must be able to provide documents that connect you to a direct ancestor listed on one of the Dawes Final Rolls of Citizens of the Cherokee Nation. To be eligible for a federal Certificate Degree of Indian Blood, you must demonstrate through documentation that you descend directly from a person listed on the Dawes’ “by Blood” rolls. This group of census rolls were taken between 1899-1906 of Citizens and Freedmen residing in Indian Territory (now northeastern Oklahoma). If your ancestor did not live in this geographical area during that time period, they will not be listed on the Dawes Rolls.

re: #69 Anymouse 🌹

Membership in the tribe (which she did not claim so why should she need to coordinate with them) involves not how much Cherokee blood you have, but whether you can trace your ancestry to a particular list of Natives compiled in the XIX Century.

Her previous claim was that family lore pointed to Cherokee and Delaware ancestors, so it’s irrelevant that she didn’t specifically claim membership in a specifi tribe because the fallout from this was utterly predictable. She owns the fact that she didn’t properly consider that fallout and seek to mitigate it before acting.

As it turns out from her DNA test, she has more Native blood than the tribal president.

A. Wrong. Your math is backwards.
B. Totally irrelevant even if it was true, which again, it’s not.

Notice also the Eastern Band nation didn’t put out such a statement.

They also haven’t come out in support of her stunt. She thought about herself and her ambitions when she should have tried to find a way to incorporate all the tribes that her old claim impinged upon.

She’s stated many times she doesn’t want to run for President.

You’re all kinds of wrong tonight.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts declared on Saturday that she would “take a hard look” at running for the White House in 2020 once the midterm elections are over, and called on the country to elect a female president to fix the “broken government” in Washington.

I don’t care that she addressed the issue directly. I care that she did it in a ham-fisted way that didn’t involve feedback from all of the impacted tribes. That makes her look both inept and overly ambitious.

You’re correct, my math is backward. My apologies.

As for fallout, conservatives lie. That’s what they do. Should she let lies against her stand? Why should anyone fight conservalies? After all, they might not consider all the possible ways conservatives could game their responses.

While we’re at it, I suppose Dr. Ford should have considered conservative attacks against her (and other women) as well. Didn’t she know she (and Warren) should just keep quiet while people lie about them?

Yeah, I’m out for now. I will not ding Warren for standing up to conservaliars. As Mr. Johnson notes above, she’s been putting up with this crap for years. It would seem a lot of people here are arguing “she should just keep her mouth shut” for longer, or maybe forever. Just sit there and take it.

I agree.

More so, we need leaders who are willing to open up doors to the past, to force discussions of our history.

Not the imagined history so popular with the religious right, but real history.

Real history has lots of ugliness in it.

In doing my own genealogy I come across many people who claim their ancestors were Native American. Even one of my own ancestors supposedly had “Cherokee” ancestors (she did have dark hair and skin, as did many of her relatives), though I can find no evidence and DNA tests indicate no inherited DNA from Native Americans.

This is all part of American lore.

It is worth discussing.

That is why I linked to Henry Gates’ videos above.

As a society we need to deal with how we think about the past.

That may be true, but even so I don’t consider that so impactful in the big picture.

The big picture was illustrated so well by Trump today.

That many Native American official tribes struggle with this issue is not something to be dismissed, but it’s also not going to be avoided. Even if Warren had tried to work with this or that Tribe, do you think they would have changed their response to the results of the test?

And I would argue that politically, unfortunate as this is, whatever Native American tribe members think of DNA testing and Warren, American politics today is balanced on a beam that swings on topics that carry much larger impact. Abortion, namely, but also voting rights and taxes.

I actually had an interesting conversation tonight about ethnicity versus nationality. As you guys know I visited Slovakia this summer. My cousins there are Slovak citizens but they’re part of a minority group called the Rusyns who unlike most Slovaks are Eastern Rite Catholics and have their own language and cultural traditions. The whole thing is touchy with many people. Personally I don’t mind being considered of Slovak ancestry but some people really clarify the Carpatho Rusyn. Being stateless is obviously touchy with many people, see the Basque, Kurds, etc.

All I’m saying is if you are white and you’re hellbent on leading a public discussion that intrinsically impacts a specific minority community, then you’d better get your ducks in a goddamned row first. It doesn’t look like Warren did that, and in the process she created a spectacle at a very sensitive juncture before the midterms that handed conservatives rhetorical ammunition to use against both her and native Americans. Her intentions weren’t bad but her execution left much to be desired.

The big penalty to the person sending this out, assuming they can even be identified, is a letter in their file.

Back in April, we took our entire team to Terry Black’s while we were in Austin for a conference. We arrived a little after 8, and the joint was already out of ribs, but I got to try the brisket. It was super-spicy, but otherwise pretty good.

Not as good as Bludso’s on La Brea in Los Angeles, mind you, but way above anything you’ll get at one of those odious chain restaurants like Appleby’s or Chili’s, where the ribs are cooked en masse and then microwaved when the customer orders them.

Mealy, greasy, cheapest pork that their supply-chain management system can procure and not mass-murder their customers.

I must say, The Conners is the Roseanne continuation ABC, Gilbert, and Carsey-Werner should have brought back to begin with, given Barr’s behavior in-between runs; the first post-Roseanne episode (“Keep On Truckin”“) had a lot of what was good about the original run (and what they started to do with the first continuation).

They dealt with her character’s death in a very topical and serious manner; she OD’ed on pain pills recovering from dual knee surgery, having covertly procured them from someone (played by Mary Steenbergen) in a neighborhood group that swapped meds around to whoever needed them as many in the group were poor and/or didn’t have insurance, despite Dan’s attempts to get her off of opioids. They also dealt with the different ways people grieve pretty well, from anger (when Dan found out Roseanne died from a opioid OD in her sleep, instead of a heart attack, and who she’d gotten the pills from, he plastered a sign calling them a killer on his truck as he drove around town, an action that prompted that person to come to the house and try to explain things to a visibly-upset Dan) to making busywork to the point of exhaustion (Jackie cleaning and reorganizing the Conner house for days, because she was afraid of leaving the house and, by extension, “leaving” Roseanne, before finally breaking down hugging Darlene).

The restart of the new series sans Roseanne might still be tainted by what Barr said and did earlier this year (and way before) in the eyes of some, but, with her completely gone except for references to her character in the show, it’s got a bunch of what made the first run good when that was on-target (and without Barr to fuck it up again).

The responses from the likes of Trump shed light on Trump and his followers, but we already knew all that. And people who care about these things already knew about the shitheads in American politics.

Frankly, the Avenatti stuff will get much more exposure than the Warren stuff in weeks ahead.

I think people are fixating on Warren because the alternative issue that needs addressed on this day is Trump enabling the destruction of a couple of centuries of tradition about foreign embassies and US President’s required commitments to the rule of law.

Just saw on the news that this is so far the wettest fall on record for the DFW area. And for those of you keeping score, we’re only half way through the meteorological fall. We’ve had so much rain that this evening they had a part of I-35 E in Carrollton buckle. There are a lot of people stuck on the highway right now.

Wait, what? Did a box drain under the Interstate wash out and collapse some lanes? If so, that is some exceedingly shoddy engineering work.

Oh, and I’ve got a fine crop of mushrooms growing in my yard. September was soggy, October is a swamp fest.

re: #149 Unshaken Defiance

This is how progressives hurt one another and the country when we need to unify against a tyrant and the GOP in a crucial election. Because the way she fought back was not seen as political tactical perfection. The wronged do not need anyone’s permission on whether to respond or heed to outside guidance on how to fight back.
Where do these pop up rules come from anyway?

From fucking precious (tending to be white and not dirt-poor) snowflakes that demand absolute perfection of Democratic candidates to the point that they are unwilling to compromise on someone who can get much of what they want done (and, more importantly, keep a Republican out of those offices).

We still have to not only fight Republicans, but these dipshits too; Trump and the GOP must be laughing their asses off when this shit happens.

Never watched Roseanne and have no desire to watch this reboot.

re: #146 Patricia Kayden

Ditto. Hubby loved the original and is a fan of the reboot and even tried to defend Roseanne as being unwell. I suppose it’s good that the other actors are able to continue the show without the baggage of a racist woman.

And that’s cool and y’all’s prerogative; people like what they like.

I was just saying that if one enjoyed the first run of Roseanne when it was good (which definitely leaves out the ninth season) and were getting into the first restart, but Roseanne Barr’s shitty, racist behavior inter-series and after the first restart was in production cast a pall on them for you, Roseanne Conner being killed off (in a very topical way) and the new new series continuing on with everyone else as they were trying to do before with the first continuation makes things much better, because now she can’t fuck it up again.

(Side note: When the first continuation got yanked back in the spring because of Roseanne’s racist ass, I said here that, if they were smart, ABC, Gilbert, and Carsey-Werner would do a Hogan Family with this and bring it back without Barr being involved anywhere, because it was pretty good TV (and pulling decent ratings, too); sometimes, it’s nice to be right ;-p)

I find it interesting that Warren has caught more flack from the left for a debatable tactical move and drawing fire from Trump than Trump did for spewing his vile racist bilge in response. Also Moe flack from her ostensible allies than the both siderist media. I wonder why that is.

Who the nominee in 2008 is an interesting question then.

Not Obama; in this alternate timeline he still ran for Senator in 2004, served out his full term, then ran for Governor of Illinois. He didn’t run for President until 2020. (also… he didn’t do that awesome speech at the 2004 DNC, so it took him longer to become a national figure).

My favorite part of the Women’s March was telling Michael Moore to get bent when he went of some anti-Hillary rant.

I was behind the main stage and the only benefit was that you could see most of the celebs as they walked up to the stage. We could barely hear anything, though. Moore came down from his speech and was talking with those of us along the barrier.

HappyWarrior  Oct 16, 2018 • 8:31:30pm

For me I dunno. It’s hard for me to explain but some people just have the attributes you like in a President. To me, delegation is a key skill. It’s something I admired about Obama. He had a great team of people advising him first as a candidate & later in office. Bernie Sanders and Warren I don’t see that as a skill with either. In fact, with Bernie I consider it one of his great weaknesses which conversely is why Bernie-FDR analogies fail.

I haven’t liked Moore since he patronizingly told Obama to start acting more like a black guy. He may have been correct in his Rust Belt calcius but I find him way too romantic towards the rust belt white voters who aren’t reliable Dems and not empathetic at all to our core base.
