There is a good chance that most of the largest states in the Union will have Democratic Governors after this years election, which will help limit the ability of Republicans to engage in egregious gerrymandering after the 2020 census.

David Cay Johnston:

“…Trump was not clean as a whistle. Beginning three years earlier, he’d hired mobbed-up firms to erect Trump Tower and his Trump Plaza apartment building in Manhattan, including buying ostensibly overpriced concrete from a company controlled by mafia chieftains Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno and Paul Castellano. That story eventually came out in a federal investigation, which also concluded that in a construction industry saturated with mob influence, the Trump Plaza apartment building most likely benefited from connections to racketeering.

My Dad was watching Faux this evening and I happened to pop in as he was watching Tucker Carlson opine about legal marijuana to an advocate for such. And besides believing that it’s effectively legal already because cops will only issue citations in New York (he disputes thousands are arrested annually for pot possession), he asserted the entire reason there are advocates for legal weed in America…is because they want to make teens docile and listless so as to control them.

Yes, after having all their talking points about “gateway drugs” and “worse than cigarettes” neutered, guys like Tucker “Man of a Thousand Grimaces” Tucker can only moan that it’ll cause people to mellow out.

I may be blowing hot air out my mouth hole but I truly think conservatives in the United States see cannabis as a threat to their way of thinking precisely because when people take it they mellow out, become less afraid, learn to enjoy the finer things in life. Conservative thought goes to shit the moment fear doesn’t become part of the body politic. And cannabis, well…

First time I tried it I was 16, I was skiing at Vail Mountain. My friend had stolen a couple of grams from his mother. We smoked it in the woods at well over 10,000 ft. elevation. I vomited. But I got *high.* And for the next two or three hours after that I wasn’t afraid of anything.

Want a moment of hilarity? Checked over at FR and the Freepers are indeed pissed…at the newspaper, who they think sued to get the records unsealed to help Ellison with a sympathy ploy just before the election.

The hilarious bit? The very first thread about Ellison before the one about the unsealed records is one where they’re convinced he was fighting the court order because he (they believe) he knew they’d show he was a wife-beater and it would be exposed just before the election.

Never touched it until I went to college in 1973. Smoked a lot of it during college. Friends would gather in a room and pass the bong. For some reason we loved smoking up when Lost In Space reruns were on TV. The lesson I learned—Irwin Allen’s writers had to be stoned to write such bizarre scripts.

For some reason, we just didn’t smoke up when Star Trek reruns came on after Lost In Space…except for the episode “Spock’s Brain”. There was just something about smoking up when they were talking about “givers of pain and delight”…

As I noted at the time (and my Dad agreed), Tucker’s whole bit fell apart right around the time the guy he was interviewed (missed the name, but he’s a legal weed advocate) challenged his argument by asking if that meant he wanted to outlaw alcohol as well. Tucker immediately started sputtering and backing up fast, trying to argue that he wasn’t for making alcohol illegal, but still banging on that the groups wanting weed legalized are doing so because they wanna make money.

But yeah, I reached the same conclusion you did, that what scares conservatives so mightily about legal marijuana is that it would rob them of their core audience. What it really comes down to is they’re realizing they’re an endangered species, that the new generation coming of age and the one behind it are more liberal than their parent’s generation.

My generation grew up after the “Shining City on the Hill” got sold for cheap to companies that ran everybody out of town, then tore down the buildings so they could stripmine and frack the fuck out of the ground underneath.

“Illegals” didn’t take our jobs, hedge fund managers and speculators killed them off and then cannibalized our retirements before getting bailed out.

It wasn’t Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac writing out loans to poor black folks that kept us from owning our first home, it was banks bundling up bad loans and then betting against them to exploit an overheated housing market that did that.

Many of us never had a decent health insurance plan before Obamacare, either because our jobs didn’t offer them or what they did offer was crap plans that would refuse to cover a band-aid.

And we don’t blame “illegals” or “those people” for why our wages so meager, we blame the greedy bastards we work for who think just “giving” us a job is an act of charity on their parts.

What scares the everloving bejesus out of Tucker is the day when we get off our asses and vote in the numbers that our parents and grandparents do.

I was with two friends, we were driving back to Colorado from New Orleans after Jazz Fest in 2007, I was sleeping in the back seat. We got pulled over in Washington, LA, 73 in a 70. It was a little nerve wracking, but us three did it right - we had some cannabis and acid in the car, but it was hidden in the tire of one of our bicycles we were carrying, damn cops head came within inches of the stuff looking at my license plate! - and we were sent on our merry way… with a $250 speeding ticket. Later we learned that that particular section of I-49 was one of the worst speed traps in the country, that the parish got almost half of their revenues from motorists pulled over driving through.

goddamnedfrank  Oct 17, 2018 • 10:40:53pm

Cannabis was made illegal as a way to demonize and excuse a crack down on Mexicans immigrants. It gave white dominated law enforcement agencies the patina of legality needed to conduct brutal police search and seizure operations that predominately targeted minority communities. Most conservatives want it to remain illegal out of sheer inertia. It’s the same reason they oppose all change, because conservatism at its root is a toxic nostalgia for an idealized past that’s been scrubbed free of all guilt and responsibility for the racism and greed that rooted white privilege into the dominant power structure. They’re old, this is what they grew up with, and there’s no examination required beyond that.

I believe the punishment for drunk driving is severe in Canada; the question is what type of fine or punishment is appropriate for driving while stoned and are there tests that accurately determine the level of marijuana “intoxication”.

White Woman Calls Police On Black Man Watching His Son’s Soccer Game (Huffington Post, with video).

She has been dubbed “Golfcart Gail.”

A white woman who called the police on a black man cheering on his son at a soccer game in Florida has earned the nickname “Golfcart Gail.”

It is the latest incident in which a white woman has called the police on a black person despite there having been no apparent crime.

Photographs of the ordeal were uploaded to Facebook by another parent at the match, Ginger Williams, who said the father “was simply trying to watch his son’s soccer game and cheer for him.”

According to Williams, the man had just told his son, “The ref is right!” when the woman “decided to spring into action and rapidly approach this parent and remind him that harassment would not be tolerated.”

Shortly after her initial tweet, Barr released a longer statement on Facebook with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, a longtime friend and advocate who often has Barr on his podcast.

Barr and Shmuley both took issue with the way the show’s writers canned her iconic character.

“An opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show,” the statement says ― though “Roseanne” was known for grappling with difficult issues like abortion and domestic abuse.

It’s kinda hard to take this shit seriously when I’m old enough to remember that the series finale of the original series ended on the main character basically admitting that the entire series had been a massive fantasy she engaged in to deal with the reality that her husband had died the previous season and her sister had come out as gay (a huge deal in early-90s white suburbia). And so what had been a comedy series about the pitfalls of surviving in a lower-class family in 90s America ended on the main character admitting nothing was real and she’d spent years dealing with her pain by writing about a life that didn’t happen.

Considering all of that…the idea that her character died from an opioid overdose being “a bridge too far” is self-serving bullshit.

And the thing is that’s how pretty much everyone called it when they announced that Barr was being written out of the show - either her character had died from an OD or alternatively, had died from complications during surgery (which, IIRC, her character was slated for in the last episode featuring Barr).

I fully expect that, before the whole Saudi/Turk mess is over with, we’ll be told that Trump is (again) the “real victim” of a Dem plot. This time we’ll be told that Democrats are trying to force him into confronting the House of Saud in order to cause an economic crisis just before the midterms/reelection. That they don’t give a damn about a journalist being brutally murdered, they’re trying to get the Saudis to cut off oil so as to hurt the economy and thus hurt Trump. And that “the people will see through this!” by voting Republican so they can take the valiant stand…of doing absolutely nothing while Donny allows the House of Saud to implicate a fall guy and thus “close” the matter.

Quelle surprise.

A major evangelical leader has spoken in defense of US-Saudi relations after the apparent killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi consulate, saying that America has more important things — like arms deals — to focus on.

Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, appeared on its flagship television show The 700 Club on Monday to caution Americans against allowing the United States’ relationship with Saudi Arabia to deteriorate over Khashoggi’s death.

“For those who are screaming blood for the Saudis — look, these people are key allies,” Robertson said. While he called the faith of the Wahabists — the hardline Islamist sect to which the Saudi Royal Family belongs — “obnoxious,” he urged viewers to remember that “we’ve got an arms deal that everybody wanted a piece of…it’ll be a lot of jobs, a lot of money come to our coffers. It’s not something you want to blow up willy-nilly.”

Pat Robertson, Republican Presidential candidate.

Back when he was campaigning in 1988, one of his planks was to erect walls on the border (sound familiar) to prevent people from leaving.

This is beyond farcical. The underlying problem is that the governing Conservative Party is at war with itself and as a result, it’s paralyzed the government’s decision-making processes.

Don’t get me started on the opposition Labour Party, which has a vast disconnect between its leader, Jeremy Corbyn - a Left Euroskeptic of long standing - and the bulk of its membership, which largely supports remaining in the European Union.

Complete and unmitigated clusterfuck.

I was looking at the video to see if there was a business name or a phone number painted on a building - it would take only seconds to ascertain where that business is located and then you’d know exactly where that footage was taken.

Gaetz is a conservative (that is, a conspiracy theorist).

What’s true: A caravan set out from Honduras, and was stopped in Guatemala by police. That happened a day after Vice-President Pence warned Central American countries about people coming to the USA and they needed to stop it.

What’s false: That money was being handed out to pay people to rush the US border. In fact, the money was being passed out because the people were stranded by the Guatemalan police and were without funds or ability to buy food or water.

I already had checked the currency, and concluded what they were passing out was not Honduran lempiro. Hadn’t thought of checking Guatemalan bills, though what the man is handing out appears to be white and pink, and some of people receiving it seem perplexed about what it is. Someone on Twitter suggested the town was in El Salvador, but there they use the US dollar, and those are not greenbacks.

The businesses in the background are so generic that it’s impossible to identify the location, and the video quality is so bad that I can’t even get a good view of the automobile license tags.

Naturally, this video is all over the RWNJ-asphere, so finding the original video is nigh impossible. I’ve even tried searching in Spanish, to no avail.

Well, they are passing out single pieces of paper. Assuming they are banknotes, the largest denominations are:

Guatemalan Quetzal: 200Q, exchange rate 7.74 to US$1.
Honduran Lempira: L500, exchange rate 24.14 to US$1.

That might be enough for taxi fare across town, hardly a trip to the US border.

If it is not currency, it could be anything: a business handing out coupons, say.

Mashal Saad al-Bostani, a 31-year-old lieutenant of the Saudi Royal Air Forces, was among the 15 suspects who arrived and left Turkey on Oct. 2 after going to Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate when Khashoggi visited there, according to daily Yeni Şafak.

The newspaper said sources did not release any details about the traffic accident in Riyadh and Bostani’s role in the “murder” was not yet clear.

The Ohio Senate race has gotten to the desperation point and nasty congressman Jim Renacci is going low on Sherrod Brown.

He is digging up old stories about Brown abusing his ex-wife back in the 80s. I don’t think these allegations have even been used in other campaigns, but here we are.

I just saw a new really nasty commercial (see below) that spurred me into looking into what Renacci is digging up.

Here is enough to give you an idea at what is going on. Rennaci brought this crap up in the last debate too, and Brown was pissed ans swung back hard.

To be truthful, I didn’t even know Jim Renacci existed before this run for Senate. His district is another of the gerrymandered Republican districts that bends and twists just east of Akron and runs up to include west Cleveland areas.

By the way, the Cordray and DeWine GOvernor race is getting equally dirty.

Cleveland.com - In increasingly nasty Senate race, Jim Renacci ups the ante with unsubstantiated attack on Sherrod Brown

CLEVELAND, Ohio — In a Wednesday interview with one of Ohio’s biggest newspapers, Republican Rep. Jim Renacci made explosive, but entirely unsubstantiated allegations against Democrat Sherrod Brown, his opponent who is strongly favored to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate.

During an interview seeking the Cincinnati Enquirer’s endorsement, Renacci told editors and reporters that “multiple” women recently have reached out to his campaign, claiming that Brown had assaulted them sometime between 1987 and 2004. He said he referred the women to a lawyer who specializes in domestic abuse, but provided no proof or specifics, according to an article The Enquirer published online on Wednesday night about the interview. Renacci refused to identify the lawyer.

Renacci’s campaign on Wednesday confirmed his comments to cleveland.com, provided no further details or evidence to verify the allegations.

“They’re serious and they’re detailed and they’re specific,” James Slepian, who’s serving as a general consultant for Renacci’s campaign, said of the allegations the Renacci campaign says it received.

Preston Maddock, a Brown campaign spokesman, said: “Congressman Renacci is both pathetic and irresponsible. He has known that his attacks on Sherrod’s family are inappropriate. He has decided to ignore Sherrod’s former wife [Larke Rechie’s] demand that he stop. And his political desperation is both stunning and disgusting.”

Man-baby Shitler is threatening to close the Mexican border militarily and cancel the latest version of NAFTA if Mexico doesn’t stop the caravan of scary Honduran people NOW!!

President Trump threatened Thursday to summon the military to close the U.S.-Mexico border and upend a trade deal, expressing mounting frustration with a large caravan of migrants from Honduras that has been making its way toward the United States.

In morning tweets, Trump repeated vows to stop U.S. aid to Central American countries that do not disband the caravan and issued a fresh threat to the Mexican government, which said Wednesday that it would treat those in the caravan no differently than it does other migrants.

“In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught — and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!” Trump said in one tweet.

In another, he suggested that the “onslaught” of immigrants could undermine a recently announced reworked trade deal with Mexico and Canada, writing that immigration is “far more important to me, as President, than Trade.”

washingtonpost.com

That last sentence says it all. Trump would rather cut the USA off from trading with our southern neighbors than allow *any* of their inhabitants enter the USA. Essentially, he’s biting the hand that feeds us, after he’s cut it off the arm.

Also, I wonder about the Constitutionality of sending the military to close a border when the “invading forces” are unarmed civilians.

Man, the Dems had better pull off winning some seats in Congress next month, or the next few years are going to be fucking nightmare.

I see Susan doesn’t realize she has wrecked her political career.

Is anyone really going to listen to her about anything anymore?

She was used by the Republicans, so they know she is nothing more than a stunt.

Independents, especially women, ran from the party due to politicians like her.

And of course Democrats were livid with her fake concern and then sticking the dagger in.

She didn’t say anything about “discarding” them just that they send a wrong message and you know what, she’s right about that. Personally I like the modern Disney heroes and heroines like Miguel in Coco and Moana in Moana better. Much more rounded characters and Moana didn’t even need a love story to be a compelling story.

I don’t take him seriously on anything since he’s proven to be an intellectually dishonest hack. This right there is proof of it. Bell didn’t say the stories should be discarded just that she feels- Yeah Ben she’s allowed to have opinions that differ from your 19th century ones that the stories send a wrong message and frankly I see exactly what she means with ones like Snow White. Now stories like Snow White will always be part of our collective folklore and fairy tales but I can see why Bell as a mother doesn’t think the message of just waiting for your Prince to find you is a good one for girls. And guess what, Ben, she’s free as a mother to read her children other stories. She’s not trying to force anything on you. She gave her observations as a mother, woman, and someone who has actually voiced a Disney princess, three things you’re not.

Yeah I know. I’m just saying that the films and tv shows my niece has been watching aren’t intentionally chosen because of the message. I really liked Moana and Coco TBH. Moana was beautifully animated but also a great adventure story and the Rock as Maui was hilarious. Plus it was a neat touch how all the voice actors were of South Pacific descent. Coco actually had me in tears a little because I’ve been so into the genealogy stuff and trying to keep the memories alive of those long gone. Plus I had no idea what Dia de Los Muertos was all about.

Right and I think that’s what Keira and Kristin are trying to say to their daughters and you know what, that’s great. And when Shapiro butts in on their parenting decisions, he sort of proves exactly their point about the older films. Older Disneyfied tales are problematic. Original fairy tales are mixed about needing a man. Rapunzel may have cheated, but she saved herself after being set up by men. The Wild Swans had a girl come very, very close to being burnt as a witch to save her 7 brothers. She succeeded*. Cinderella had a happy ending, but with a host of other stories it reflected the reality of a stepmother favoring her own children over her stepchildren.

*Succeeded in saving her brothers, not in being burned as a witch. Just to be clear and all…

The theme of Snow White is the jealousy of an older woman that a younger, more beautiful woman is competing with her. Disney downplays this theme but other versions expand on it. (I’m thinking of Snow White And The Huntsman where Charlize Theron plays the evil queen)

It’s fairly obvious that Ben didn’t bother to read the actual article to see why Knightley made the choice she did. Decent reasons, really. And sure, a very young child might not understand those themes right away, but those themes will probably end up worming their way into her subconscious. Why not wait until the kid is a bit older and you can discuss those ideas with her?

Right. I read her reasons. They’re reasonable. FFS she’s not suggesting the films be banned.

Last few days, even the phone part has required multiple re-starts, which is not wonderful for what is essentially an emergency device. I have spent a couple of hours on (my landline) phone with tech support. They advise me to re-start (again and again, 5-7 minutes each time) or call some special numbers like *720. The latter answers that the number is dis-connected or not in service, as does my voicemail. The tech reps themselves repeat the same information over and over, and ask me to repeat information I had given them not 15 seconds earlier. Any time I see a movie that is “based on true events” I basically assume it has almost nothing to do with reality. As long as it is a good movie in it’s own right I don’t hold historical accuracy against them. Unless it is an actual documentary then I will nitpick the shit out of that.

Braveheart simply didn’t have the budget to do Stirling Bridge, which is a shame.

A Bridge Too Far deliberately took things that the British Army did and then had that action portrayed by the American Army in order to appeal to American audiences. I have a much harder time with that than a matter of budget constraints on Braveheart.

I have a freedom pop phone line as a backup phone. For about $10 a month I get unlimited talk an text and 1Gb of data. They run on both sprint and AT&T so you have to make sure to get a gsm phone not a cdma one so you don’t end up back on sprint’s crappy network. As a backup or emergency device I don’t think you’ll find a better deal. Unless 1Gb is not enough data for you.

I can’t find the info on that anymore that I had read on that. A problem with Market Garden, of course, is that it was mostly a Brit affair and was a hard sell to US audiences at the time, so they had to cast Robert Redford etc and up the American presence on screen as much as possible, which still didn’t attract an audience. I saw that most other reviewers concluded it was reasonably accurate, so maybe I was overly harsh. I haven’t seen it in over 30 years, so I may need to watch it again and compare with my texts.

Trump Tower board seeks nearly $90,000 from estate of art collector who died in 50th-floor fire (Washington Post)

The fellow in question couldn’t sell his apartment, because of the Trumpsterfire in the White House. He died in the Trump Tower fire. At the time he owed about $60,000 in “common fees” (as I understand that term, that means the money condominiums charge you to live in the house you already paid for).

Since he died, the fees have risen to over $90,000. Trump Tower is still assessing the fee to the dead man’s estate, and has filed action in court to try to recover all that.

Capitalism.

Thats not really capitalism. That’s a Homeowners Association. HOAs are responsible for maintaining common areas and providing certain services. They charge dues in order to do that. Anyone who buys a condo knows that you’re going to have to pay dues. If you don’t pay the dues, the HOA typically has a right to foreclose or place a lien on your property.

Basically, an HOA is a private government (and often in practice is the best argument against democracy) and the dues are the taxes you pay to that’s private government.

Who the heck thought this up? That sounds like a real winner of an advert campaign.

The Tourism Commission is a state agency (my tax dollars at work). They hired someone from outside to come up with this, according to the article.

This part is especially brilliant:

Another ad, which was popular with focus groups in Minneapolis, Kansas City and Denver, was titled “Festivals for everything from mud to testicles.” The latter refers to a Father’s Day weekend Testicle Festival, at the Round the Bend Steakhouse east of Ashland, that features deep-fried sheep and beef testicles.

State Tourism Director John Ricks said that because Nebraska has consistently ranked as the “least likely state” tourists plan to visit, the marketing campaign needed to be different.

Our Tourism Commission has been a consistent embarrassment (possibly because it’s run by Republicans):

Auditor: State tourism commission ‘took advantage of the Nebraska taxpayers’ (Omaha World-Herald, 2016, more at the link):

A new state audit has slammed the Nebraska Tourism Commission for excessive spending on conference speakers and photo shoots, improperly reimbursing a contractor for alcohol and cigarettes, and using the executive director’s daughter in a state tourism advertising campaign.

The commission, which became an independent agency four years ago, also was criticized for getting dozens of free meals from its advertising firm, Bailey Lauerman, and for allowing the firm’s ad contract to go over budget by $4.4 million in the past three years.

The audit also cited as excessive $18,000 in moving expenses that were paid to an employee who relocated from Sidney to Kearney and a $44,000 fee for a 90-minute speech at the commission’s annual conference.

Both sides, though.

I am not sure I get the derision here. If you buy a condo you do it knowing condo fees are part of the deal. Condo fees cover maintenance in common areas, repairs, cleaning etc. It is a trade off people make so they don’t have to be responsible for certain things that can be a huge headache for homeowners.

When I was shopping for a house, condo’s and HOAs immediately disqualified a place, but for some people mowing their own lawn or maintaining a roof is unthinkable and a condo makes sense.

Well, I suppose you have a point in the issue of maintaining common areas and such; they don’t maintain themselves.

HOAs tend to be jerks though (I am minded of the HOA that prohibited a WW2 Medal of Honor winner from displaying the US Flag).

The Great Flagpole Dispute of 2009 started last summer when Van T. Barfoot, a retired Army colonel who single-handedly took on three Nazi tanks in World War II, moved to the Sussex Square neighborhood near Richmond to be closer to his daughter. Barfoot believes in flying the colors of the nation he loves, so he erected a flagpole in his front yard.

I won’t feel comfortable until the election is over and the Democrats actually take over at least one House. Our nation probably won’t survive unless both Houses are firmly under blue control, but at least one House gives us a small chance.

What we call the birth control pill was originally intended/developed as a treatment for endometriosis. During clinical trials, they discovered the “unfortunate side effect” that it prevented pregnancy.

The lab director thought they’d have to start all over; the company thought the project had been a big loss. The nurses who’d been monitoring the test subjects had to persuade them that they’d found something better than hoped for; that prospective test subjects were swarming their clinic begging to be included in the next round of testing.

This is the problem worldwide. The far right in most countries keeps things from happening that are positive for that nation’s citizens. This is why Brexit happened. Explicitly why (along with a massive disinformation campaign)…because citizens do not see anything changing that helps them.

This is by design.
