Oct. 12, 2018 | Felix Contreras — It’s appropriate that the pioneering Mexican band Café Tacvba (Tacuba) start its set with “Olita del Altamar” (“Waves from the High Seas”) from the group’s 2012 album El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco. It’s essentially an incantation of the magic that transpired during their performance behind Bob Boilen’s desk. The lyrics sing of the comings and goings of waves, symbolic of the passage of time and fueled by the Mexican folk rhythm son jarocho, a favorite of the band’s since their start almost 30 years ago.

They then fast forward to “Diente de León” (“Dandelion”), from their 2017 album Jei Beibi. It’s a majestic, stripped-down version that puts the emphasis back on the lyric, a plea for existential and environmental harmony using the metaphor of the weedy flower.

As usual, lead vocalist Rubén Albarrán is a captivating central presence, evoking a sense of down-home camaraderie with his ever friendly smile that has become the band’s most outward image. Having seen the band play in front of dedicated fans in massive stadiums in Mexico City, it’s striking to see his movements limited to a few careful spins and dance steps while still managing to embody the intense energy of their music.

Their song “Las Flores,” from their 1994 album Re, slips into the ska groove that attracted fans to rock en Español in general and to Los Tacvbas in particular, a beat that captures the adventurous musical energy that swept all of Latin America in the early 1990s.

Not all bands would end their set with a power ballad, though very few bands hold their audience’s attention and dedication like Café Tacvba. But that’s just how they close their set, the four principal members together for almost 30 years, casting a musical spell that still captivates after all this time.

Set List
“Olita del Altamar”
“Diente de León”
“Las Flores”
“Que No”

According to Reuters, the numbers of people involved were “hundreds.” Hardly an invasion (but “invasion” has been used all my life by conservatives to describe anything from immigrants to asylum seekers). The article also notes the Mexican police forces actually didn’t let them cross the bridge.

Mexico is also processing asylum claims from those trying to enter Mexico. Asylum in Mexico is hardly an invasion of the USA (or Mexico).

The “Birds Aren’t Real” Website is hard to tell if it’s a Poe or serious.

One Step Beyond (Flat Earthers).

They have this rather dubious lie quote from President Richard Nixon:

“We needed a way to keep an eye on the American citizens without them knowing. It was imperative, for their own safety of course. We hired only the best. It took years. We designed, built, tested, failed. We persisted. Eventually, over decades, we had it. A fleet of covert technological surveillance devices unlike anything the world had ever seen. We called them, ‘Birds’”

The Week In Garbage Men: GOP Congressman Wishes You Gals Could Be More Chill About Groping (Wonkette, more at the link):

On Friday, CNN obtained a recording of Jason Lewis, a Republican congressman from Minnesota, whining on his former radio show about how unfair it is that ladies are so uptight now about being groped by men they don’t want to be groped by. Specifically women who did not want to be groped by Herman Cain and made a whole thing about how he sexually harassed them, just because he sexually harassed them.

Via CNN:

“I don’t want to be callous here, but how traumatizing was it?” Lewis said. “How many women at some point in their life have a man come on to them, place their hand on their shoulder or maybe even their thigh, kiss them, and they would rather not have it happen, but is that really something that’s going to be seared in your memory that you’ll need therapy for?”

“You’ll never get over? It was the most traumatizing experience? Come on! She wasn’t raped,” Lewis added, using a voice mocking an emotionally distraught woman.

It’s bullshitting…the true does not matter, consistent lies do not matter. Each element gets a separate dismissing story and the pieces don’t fit, but ultimately they don’t have to because they’re relying on enough of the audience being complicit, wanting to believe that nothing bad happened.

Saving grace there would be that they really, really don’t have the means to do so and their cash-strapped military will be perfectly happy to emphasise that even at current levels they have more than enough of the bloody things for pretty much any eventuality already.

The inspection thing is on the money, though. And it’s a great way to give Russia a chance to get out of those obligations without taking an ounce of blame for it. If I didn’t know better I’d almost suspect someone high up in the current administration might owe them a favour or two…

Russia’s been in violation of this treaty forever, but I’m pretty sure they don’t want shithead to tear it up. The supposed claim is that China, as a country who’s not party to the treaty, has been building up intermediate-range nukes to deploy in the Far East in order to keep us out. If Donny were the “peacemaker” he wants to imagine himself, he’d approach Beijing about joining the INF or even drafting a new treaty to include all 3 nations.

But he’s a bullshit artist desperate to start a war to secure a second term, so he’s gonna instead rip up the treaty and promote a new era of brinkmanship instead.

The Russian government doesn’t think like that. To them, it’s all 19th century geopolitics where might makes right and superpowers dominate their neighbors; they really don’t get how others think. They count on others honoring their commitments while they violate theirs. To them, this is a power play by Trump. To us, it’s a destabilizing temper tantrum.

Yeah, the reason it caught my eye in the Japanese newspaper is because I’ve recently seen a couple youtube videos of Japanese “journalists” interviewing Jared Taylor. Taylor grew up in Japan and is fluent, so he can spout his white supremacist shit in fairly intellectual-sounding Japanese. The interviewers start by pressing him and then end my nodding in agreement. It’s worrying, and it looks like a setup. Japanese are no strangers to racial purity theories.

I went for my Minority Inspector training this morning. And yes I am now certified for that position for the upcoming General Election. One mother brought her son to the session. I commented to her after we were done that he is one of the few children who has received a civics class. She agreed with me and said that children should learn more about local governments and politics. At least locally we are headed in the correct direction.

I don’t know. I can be super ugly because I would NOT see Dean Heller dining in a restaurant and not loudly denounce him. Does that make me the same as the other ugly people or a caring American who is sick and tired of getting jacked around by our so-called government representatives?

I was at a concert on Thursday. The main band was Villagers from Dublin. I has already tweeted about this before the concert.

Well, it got better. The support act, Billie Marten, was amazing:

And Villagers was even better:

I think part of being ugly in this discussion is the amount of dishonesty the ugly can create on social media.

If you confronted someone like Heller, I imagine it would be coming from political honesty.

Minority Inspector is a person who writes down the name of each voter in 2 books. This person is also a representative of the minority party in the city. This is that the election is considered fair by both major parties. I also have to hold onto one of these books for a whole year in case that the results are disputed.

The people eating at that time were mildly inconvenienced, but the incident was over in a few minutes—their food didn’t even get cold. What is a Minority Inspector?

Pennsylvanians elects the election board in each precinct. People vote for Judge of Election (who presides) and two inspectors. Inspectors can’t be from the same party. The Judge also either appoints two clerks or the Inspectors select their clerk.

Mom served as our precinct Judge of Elections for 40 years.

McConnell is not well loved in some parts of KY. Other pols fear him, because he can screw up their elections with a few phone calls. So, most of the KYGOP fall in behind him, and to the vast majority of Kentuckians, he represents the party of “no abortion,” “no welfare,” and “Christian values.” But he is reviled in the bluer parts of the state.

OT. Very beautiful pictures and video.
Something that only took over 50 years is now being built in my backyard. It’s essentially one of the final legs of a neglected part of the US 11-15 corridor in central Pennsylvania. There is much more being built but this bridge is the key.
My friend posted this on Facebook the other day. I’ve seen this ultra light flyover around here for quite a while. Now he’s documenting a huge project. That is the north branch of the Susquehanna river, and the most completed part is on the Winfield side, on a ridge. You can see the slope coming across to Montanden.
Great video and pictures. Some of the scenery around here is beautiful. I don’t even notice half of it anymore.
Susquehanna Thruway Project
The finish will be 2 to 4 years more.
Ha.

My middle son is currently studying supply chain management in college. One of the courses he is taking is business law. The professor in that class made a point about contracts in that class. He said that, in the thing between Trump and Warren, Warren could actually take Trump to court for breach of contract. She would have a credible case that Trump, being who he is, the President, can actually have his statements treated as a oral contract, and that, since she not only agreed to it but actually did her part, he could be held responsible for his part.

The professor went on to say that, unlike Trump, Bill Maher, who made a similar statement on his show, could not be held to the same level because his show does not have the same standing as the presidency. His would be seen as more commentary or entertainment, and would therefore not be in any contract.

I also got some more information about my son’s fencing tournament. All the details:

In September, he joined fencing at the college. He’d never picked up an epee, but he has a knock-off katana I got him for getting a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and he’s watched a lot of anime, but he seems to have a knack for it. So, he went to his first tournament last weekend as an alternate on the first squad. In the early rounds used to determine the bracket order the teams would play in, he beat his opponent 5-0. This score helped his team skip playing in the first round. We actually think this prevented him from playing any other matches, ha.

After the match, he got pizza and a card from a guy who teaches epee. The guy lives in San Marcos, but would drive up to Richardson to teach. My son wants to get his own gear right now, but the offer is interesting.

Remember the commissioner who shot the shoplifter? He’s been arrested and charged:

Lakeland City Commissioner Michael Dunn is being held in the Polk County Jail on no bond following the shooting death of a shoplifter.

Dunn is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Christobal Lopez.

Lopez was robbing Dunn’s military surplus store on Oct. 3 when he was fatally shot.

Dunn is using the “Stand Your Ground” claim as self-defense.

State Attorney Brian Haas disagrees.

“It is the policy of my office to comply with and abide by the Stand Your Ground Law, however, I have determined that this case and the actions of Mr. Dunn fall outside the protection of the Stand Your Ground Law,” said Haas.

Here’s some thoughts how how public servants like Mitch McConnell can avoid being harassed in restaurants:

1) Hold town halls on a regular basis.
2) Allow people to speak even if you don’t agree with them. If they need to shout at you, let them (along as they don’t curse or threaten violence).
3) When the event is concluded you may NOT say the following
a) people that disagree with me are from another state, town, etc.
b) people that disagree with me are paid by someone

Not willing to do the above, expect to get accosted in public spaces until you die. It’s called public service for a reason. Both words are important.

Is A Changing Climate Shifting Tornado Alley?

An important paper by Harold Brooks and Victor Gensini is out today, and it looks at how the atmospheric conditions that produce tornadoes have changed since 1979. The data shows a clear shift toward the Southeast U.S. with a decrease in the Plains. This is not good since the increase is in an area of higher population, and in an area where a larger percentage of people live in tornado death traps. These traps are sometimes known as mobile homes.

Many cryptocurrency projects use Medium as their public platform to disseminate news and whatnot. And then there the navel-gazers, who seem to post only emo self-referential blogs about their latest crisis of identity.

I haven’t quite figured out whether Medium is worth the time of day. Another puzzler is Minds, which seems to be a Steemit clone with its own token. No matter how you spin it, the Crown Prince of the KSA, Mister Bone Saw, is directly responsible for this assassination. His staff planned, coordinated, and approved it. And they couldn’t have done it without his approval. This is not Medevial England, where Henry II could mutter “Can’t someone rid me of this troublesome priest?” and Thomas Becket would be attacked and the top of his head sheared off at Canterbury.

Full stop.

This is 2018, and the world doesn’t work that way. Mister Bone Saw ordered the kill, and the world went Eew! Now he is crawfishing, but the deed is done, and all reasonable democracies, except for the US of A, are condemning the KSA, and Mister Bone Saw, and saying that it is a pariah in the eyes of the world.

Except us, of course. Our President has decided to hug this pariah and give it a big wet kiss, with a lot of tongue. We have now, as a government, embraced a position on Human Rights which every Administration has fought against for decades.

one of the parts I really don’t get about our media is that we have conclusive evidence that Mitch McConnell is at the very least a liar and a hypocrite, possibly just as treasonous as Trump (at least until we know the extent of the forthcoming Mueller investigation) he gets confronted by everyday Americans in restaurants who express their very public displeasure in how he’s conducted his job by doing what, confronting him about what the fuck his positions and policies mean to them in such a fashion that gives Mitch very little recourse in understanding that message, at least its a message that the media does such a piss poor job about, they same party that is essentially calling them out as targets for their own constituents and these fuckers want us to be civil.

Mitch McConnel is lucky some frustrated bastard didn’t take a baseball bat to his knees because that’s sure how I feel about him but I’m having to satisfy myself with the hope that the upcoming elections won’t have too many thumbs on the scales so we can start unfucking all that he’s orchestrated and I can only hope that we put him in his own lawfully created tax bracket and take 97% of what he makes and start using that to credit a fund to handle all of the lawsuits all of his heinous shit is sure to inspire.

I suspect that the cartoon predates the WPA, whose work partly coincided with an increase in military spending at the start of the build-up to World War II, ironically enough. Isolationists, of course, continued to oppose military spending right up to Pearl Harbor.
In the aftermath of the First World War, military spending came in for a great deal of criticism in the Western world. This was understandable since the runaway European arms race of 1900-1914 was (and is) seen as one of the principal causes of the war. Spending levels were actually fairly modest at the time, only increasing after 1936 and the recognition of the Fascist threat. 1934 was the first year in which US military spending topped a billion dollars in peacetime.

Regarding the jackpots: If no one wins the jackpot in the next PowerBall drawing (Wed), then PB too will be pushing the “Billion” magic word.

If no one wins the next MegaMillions jackpot, it will leap past $1.6B (annuity) to at least $2B or more. I don’t know where the top can be.

Regarding the annuities - they are such a deception. Saying something is worth X when what is really meant that the face value in 30 years will total X is just an old marketing trick in money.

If one opts for the annuity, the first payout is something like one fiftieth (1/50th) the supposed “jackpot”.

Now with a giant jackpot annuity like $1.6B a mere 1/50th is still a lot of money (for most of us mere mortals.)

But with the usual smaller jackpots the first year of the annuity, especially after taxes, isn’t much more than the annual salary of a top earning professional (e.g. surgeon.)

Never trust a gambler, and for sure never trust the game-monger:

Tickets Selling ‘Very, Very Quickly’ for $1.6 Billion Mega Millions

[…]

As more tickets sell, chances grow that at least one buyer will pick all six winning numbers. That would stop the streak of 25 rollovers, the most recent one Friday night.

Based on sales projections, 75 percent of the 302 million possible combinations will be chosen for Tuesday’s drawing, up from 59.1 percent in Friday’s, said Carole Gentry, spokeswoman for Maryland Lottery and Gaming.

“It’s possible that nobody wins again. But it’s hard to fathom,” Gentry said.

[…]

Let me see if I get this right - the state lotteries run websites/adverts to encourage people to buy tickets, urging folk to “believe”, on a 1 in 302 million chance something will happen.

But when faced with an event with a one in four chance of happening, that is somehow “hard to fathom”.

On Saturday there was a 41% chance of something (no one winning the jackpot) happening.

It happened.

Now somehow a similar event with a 25% chance of happening is “hard to fathom.”

Exactly. And while for obvious reasons I’m not taking every Turkish government official’s claim as gospel, their broadest accusations have now been confirmed while all the Saudis have done is lie over and over again, offering nothing but ever changing rank bullshit and as their lies crumble following those up with utterly implausible versions of events.

266
freetoken  Oct 21, 2018 • 2:06:59am

The article did have one bit of useful information - that about 280 million tickets were sold for Friday’s draw.

If the coverage of combinations was 59.1%, that means about 179 million unique combinations were picked.

That means each combination was covered by about 1.6 tickets.

As I noted a couple of days ago, once half the combinations are chosen, the random number machine is more likely to spit out a ticket with a combination that has already been used.

And, I propose, many people have the same “magic numbers”, meaning duplicate tickets via this route too.

Winamp is back.

winamp.com

Am downloading it and will give a review when it’s operational on my PC.

I am currently blasting Abba through my cheap laptop speakers, with Winamp set up in its classic configuration (since that is what I’m familiar with).

Aside from the usual tiny radio buttons, it seems to work as advertised (though the download tried and failed to download Microsoft DirectX, which Windows 10 doesn’t use anyway). I prefer Winamp over Windows Media Player.

Well, “believing in something” is pretty much the core of marketing.

That said, my own state lotto Website has had this for a while as its top news article on the opening page:

Two big jackpots are up for grabs in this week’s Mega Millions(r) and Powerball(r) drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball is now up to $620 million.

We certainly get more entertainment around here for the price of a lotto ticket than say the price of a movie. (Plus it isn’t a 120-mile round trip to buy a lotto ticket.)

That’s particularly true when the discussion is take the annuity versus take the lump sum payout, or to invest or not to invest.

Since I don’t know crap about investment, I would probably just deposit the money and live off the interest and annual payouts, while my wife (back when she had money before the housing market crashed) likes to dabble in stocks.

Wrangling about taxes is also an interesting conversation, particularly with my stance of “taxes are the price of civilisation” versus her still-somewhat libertarian attitudes about taxation.

Moreover on taxes, it is a whole lot easier to file taxes on annuity payments with interest versus dabbling in the stock market and filing for things such as short- or long-term capital gains taxes and such (not to mention all the record-keeping involved).

I’ve filed the long form (1040) exactly once in my life (when I claimed accelerated depreciation on my hammered dulcimer when I was still performing in an Irish folk band and cutting my one long-playing short-selling album). She is comfortable with all the record-keeping and forms involved with investment income.

Trump’s war on America continues:

Canadian deported despite having served for US military

A Canadian army captain who fought alongside American troops in Afghanistan, and who is married to a former officer in the US air force, has been deported as Donald Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policies continue to break apart military families.

Demetry Furman, 47, says he held a top-level security clearance with US forces during his service in the Middle East and worked with them on several successful anti-drugs operations that prevented millions of dollars of heroin coming to the West.

But in a twist of irony he says it was a long-spent 1992 marijuana conviction that led to his being dumped by agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (Ice) at the Canadian border on Tuesday - after he spent 77 days in a maximum security jail in Ohio labelled as a drugs trafficker.

“I feel betrayed. It’s a slap in the face because when I was in Afghanistan no-one cared what flag was on my shoulder,” Furman said. “I’m labelled a drug trafficker by them right now, but when I was in Afghanistan and guarding poppy fields, I was stopping opium convoys through Pakistan to China to be made into heroin and shipped to the US.”

The conviction, which at the time resulted in an $80 fine and 28 days’ community service, came after a passenger in the car he was driving attempted to sell one ounce of marijuana to an undercover policeman. Canadian authorities later vacated the conviction and Furman says he was told by US immigration officials as recently as 2016 that it was no barrier to his application for a green card after he married his wife Cynthia in 2014. They couple had met when they served together in Ohio three years earlier.

Some have alleged that Orwell had a thing to say about our infatuation:

The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made their living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets. Winston had nothing to do with the Lottery, which was managed by the Ministry of Plenty, but he was aware (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary. Only small sums were actually paid out, the winners of the big prizes being nonexistent persons.”

So, as you can tell, I’ve been ingesting info on what happens to the lotteries, the winners, and the impact of it all.

The internet is full of garbage.

You already knew that, of course.

But in regards to asset management and “sudden wealth”, it seems the internet is keen on proving that one can’t read everything on said internet.

One popular allegation pops up in half-assed news stories, such as here:

Mark And Cindy Hill, Missouri Powerball Winners, Live Modestly, Give Back To Hometown

The National Endowment for Financial Education cites research estimating that 70 percent of people who suddenly receive a large sum of money will lose it within a few years.

Now, that HuffPo article is from 2013. You can find this same alleged statistic on all sorts of websites claiming to be financial advisors on “sudden wealth”.

So I went to the NEFE website and what do I find?

Research Statistic on Financial Windfalls and Bankruptcy

Over the past couple of years several news organizations have attributed a statistic to the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) stating that 70 percent of lottery winners end up bankrupt in just a few years after receiving a large financial windfall. This statistic is not backed by research from NEFE, nor can it be confirmed by the organization. Frequent reporting—without validation from NEFE—has allowed this “stat” to survive online in perpetuity.

I suspect for every lottery winner who has blown through their winnings to become bankrupt there are ten others who are still living quite comfortably on their windfall. After all, it takes a certain amount of effort to spend millions, especially if you’re unused or disinterested in gaudy displays of wealth — unlike a certain so-called “billionaire” from Queens.

Snopes (that liberally-biased shill of George Soros) now has the source of the video spread around the right-wing fever swamps of a “caravan of people being paid by Soros to ‘invade’ the United States.”

snopes.com

TL;DR version: It was shot in front of an auto repair shop in Guatemala. It pictures refugees in the area. They found the Facebook page of the auto shop with additional photos.

In short, Rep. Gaetz lied to fear-monger conservatives. However, it is now part of wingnut canon (tm).

Gaetz has partially retreated on his claim:

Rep. Gaetz also said that this video captured women and children being paid “2 join the caravan & storm the US border” (i.e., join a group of Honduran migrants seeking to reach the U.S). This, too, was inaccurate.

The MiChiquimula Facebook page reported that this group was already en route to the United States when they stopped in the Guatemalan city to board a bus. In other words, these people were not paid to “join” the caravan, as they were already a part of it:

Groups of Hondurans have chosen to travel aboard buses

Taking advantage of their passage through Esquipulas, this morning various Hondurans paid to continue their journey on bus, many of them accompanied by minors and babies.”

Morning.

I’ve spent a bit of it by watching a debate for Ohio House Rep for District 15. Steve Stivers (R) versus Rick Neal (D). Damn Republicans number one mission seems to be to paint Democrats as unstable ruffians standing outside the gates ready to kill everyone.

Sick of it. The “lack of civility” was said by Stivers at least a dozen times.

Rick Neal did a decent job, often being criticized by Stivers for showing that very lack of civility attacking instead of offering ideas.

The audience groaned a lot with many things Stivers said. The two biggest were when he first said he has never wanted to eliminate preexisting conditions and the second when he said he supported the type of ads that are running in Ohio* because they are factual. They are not, and Neal pointed out about their lack of civility.

Republicans. They should just past out a DVD video and some notes in a Word file on the DVD.

* Stivers apparently is the head of some Republican organization that helps spread the PAC funding for campaign commercial buying or something.

And that reminds, the audience gave a big groan when he said he was all for getting big money out of elections but PACs are not big money because it is a group of individuals putting their money together. Yeah…he said that. Very creative.

Also putting people who are chimeras, mosaics, opposite-sex bone marrow transplants, &c in legal limbo.

Presumably such a designation of gender, if it somehow became law, could allow the government to then legally pursue bathroom potty police policies, and force corporations such as Target which don’t give a flip what bathroom you use to enforce their idea of gender.

And “science-based?” No conservative ever gave a flip about science in my entire life. Scientific study indicates gender is much more complicated than what letter is on your birth certificate.

More fear-mongering to drive fearful conservatives to the polls … and probably more people assaulted in bathrooms who are actually gender-conforming to their sex but don’t appear that way. (Several women have been attacked for being in the “wrong” bathroom since conservatives started their fear campaign over this.)

What’s next, government-mandated clothing styles so there is no confusion between a woman and a man?

Pennsylvanians elects the election board in each precinct. People vote for Judge of Election (who presides) and two inspectors. Inspectors can’t be from the same party. The Judge also either appoints two clerks or the Inspectors select their clerk.

Mom served as our precinct Judge of Elections for 40 years.

I did a 4 year term as Judge for my precinct back about 8 years ago here in NW PA.

Conservatives have always been angry at Canada. Consider the decades of fear-mongering over Canada’s health system for example.

The John Birch Society for decades has argued Canada was taken over secretly by Communists. That would be the same JBS Sen. Barry Goldwater courted into his campaign for President.

The only difference you’re seeing now is conservatives are in complete charge here.

And supporting the troops? Yeah, they never did that either. Hopefully the man’s wife will be able to enter Canada to stay.

they are being actively suppressed by the power of the government(s)

natural rights are neither granted or given

It is noteworthy that “natural rights” are almost exclusively a religious construct, in modern times advanced by both Martin Luther and the Catholic Church. They also vary depending on the religion (slavery is acceptable in the Bible, Martin Luther was wildly anti-Semitic).

That is what they want; for everyone to shut up. They think they can bully people by calling them a mob, etc.

Well, there have been some fine protesting mobs throughout American history. I am glad to be a part of this mob the Republicans even mockingly refer to as The Resistance.

I don’t know why this is being tweeted again now, but those WSJ photos are more than two years old (note the headline about Brazil’s president Roussef being ousted) and this was largely debunked back then.

It’s not “liberal/conservative,” it’s rolling deadlines feeding a dozen printing sites from east to west. One version of that paper was an early edition. The other was a later edition printed out west after then-candidate Trump had pretzeled his position further from clarity.

And anyway, it’s the WSJ. Nothing about it is targeted to a liberal audience, ever. The news side is, at best, on the right side of center. The editorial page is, of course, full metal wingnut.

Maybe. But this election cycle has been slightly* different from the usual midterms: “GOTV” has been the major theme that every Democratic candidate/site/organization has been pushing - often to the point of obsession - for many months (and well-predating the “normal” “election season”). And Republicans have belatedly come to the same conclusion. A “blue wave” may indeed be in the offing, but it really doesn’t seem like that much of a “given” that it’s going to suppress pro-Dem, anti-Trump turnout. One fervently hopes….

Early in the morning two weeks ago, BBCA aired an episodes of Doctor Who that had been written by Douglas Adams. The episodes were never originally aired, and some of the script had to be animate. It featured the fourth Doctor.

There were two interesting things. One, it featured a time lord hiding on earth whose time machine was in the shape of a professor’s office (Dirk Gently anyone?). The second, the changed the ending just slightly and had Tom Baker refill it recently, so it ended with him from a couple of years ago rather than the 1970s.

The other thing one sometimes hears from the Right is that we shouldn’t be making it easier for people to vote, that voting should require some effort. The thing is, the measures they want to impose generally have littler or no effect on them, or people like them. It’s the people who are NOT like them that are impacted.

They never suggest removing polling places from suburban neighborhoods, or predominantly white areas.

The forms of voter ID that they think should be accepted are invariably ones that they and people like them already have, and that people unlike them are likely not to have.

They want to get rid of early voting, because it’s not something they or people like them use.

And here, of course, I’m referring to the folks on the Right who are still in denial about their own voter suppression measures, who have convinced themselves that it really is about the integrity of the vote. The others - well, they know what the game is and lie about it. Very, very few are open and honest about why they want to do this.

I just worry about the Russia factor. A blue wave won’t mean shit if Putins buddies can just hack the machines and tack on 10 000 extra votes for the GOP in places where it matters most.

In nearly every state where they use voter machines, you can request a paper ballot. If your state is one of those and you go to the polls, always request a paper ballot.

Moreover, midterm elections are a bit trickier to rodent copulate than a Presidential election. For the latter, you would only need to flip a few key districts. In a nationwide House and Senate election, that’s 535 separate races controlled by thousands of county clerks and fifty state elections officials.

Police find stolen doughnut van, share treats with homeless (AP):

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — It was a lucky day for some Florida police officers who recovered a stolen van filled with Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Clearwater police posted a photo on Facebook of a group of officers standing in front of the van holding boxes of the tasty treats.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the van was reported stolen Tuesday morning in Lake City, which is 193 miles (310 kilometers) north of Clearwater. The van, loaded with doughnuts, was spotted in Clearwater on Tuesday afternoon.

The Facebook posting says the store manager donated the cargo to the officers. They saved some doughnuts to eat and handed out the rest to the area’s homeless.

Authorities are still looking for the van thief.

Unfortunately (to paraphrase Adlai Stevenson), we need a majority…..

Honestly, I think it’s more efficient to simply make a couple easily discovered attempts to hack databases and such, without actually changing anything, and make Americans doubt the results of the vote. Great way to destroy democracy is to make everyone think it’s rigged. You don’t even have to actually rig anything.

See also trust in the free press. When nearly half the populace thinks the press is somehow anti-American, you have successfully removed the one significant check on governmental power.

re: #391 Belafon

Early in the morning two weeks ago, BBCA aired an episodes of Doctor Who that had been written by Douglas Adams. The episodes were never originally aired, and some of the script had to be animate. It featured the fourth Doctor.

There were two interesting things. One, it featured a time lord hiding on earth whose time machine was in the shape of a professor’s office (Dirk Gently anyone?). The second, the changed the ending just slightly and had Tom Baker refill it recently, so it ended with him from a couple of years ago rather than the 1970s.

You watched Shada. This almost-episode has been reconstructed several times. I’m glad BBCA aired it. When I was a kid, seeing clips of Shada at Doctor Who conventions, was a big deal.
