Mail Bomb Suspect in Custody, and He’s a Rabid Trump Cultist

Politics • Views: 39,029
The van owned by suspect Cesar Sayoc is plastered with deranged pro-Trump stickers and violent imagery

Well, it wasn’t a “false flag,” and it wasn’t a liberal: Cesar Sayoc Jr., Alleged Mail Bomber, Threatened Democrats on Twitter.

Cesar A. Sayoc, the Florida man reported to be the mail bombing suspect, frequently posted conspiratorial pro-Trump messages on Twitter or made threats to Democratic leaders, including some who would later receive potentially explosive devices in the mail this week.

Sayoc—who was named by several national media outlets as the man authorities arrested Friday in connection with the attempted bombings—tweeted frequently from what appears to be his account: @hardrock2016.

The account and his Facebook profile, which feature pictures of Sayoc, 56, at Trump rallies, also contain some of the same images plastered to Sayoc’s van, including flags for Florida’s Seminole tribe and collages of pro-Trump and anti-CNN meme stickers.

The Facebook account is almost exclusively pro-Trump content, including pictures and videos Sayoc purportedly filmed at one of the president’s political rallies. And the Twitter feed is littered with far-right conspiracy theories or violent threats aimed at some of President Trump’s most outspoken critics.

The Federal attempted murder statute restricts charges to acts committed within the special maritime or territorial jurisdiction of the US. So even though he sent the bombs through the USPS this technically might not meet that definition, and instead it appears they’re going to go with destructive device and protected target charges.

President Donald Trump has long criticized US military exercises with South Korea, calling them expensive and provocative and suspending several major exercises following his June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The MAGAvan reminds me of a crazy person who used to be around here* , whom Mrs. FBW and I called “The Paragraph Lady”. She’d set up on the corner of two very busy streets, with 3 to 4 3’x4’ signs, completely covered in 2” tall writing. Absolutely no way anyone could read it, certainly not while driving by. At some point, perhaps because the black-on-white signs didn’t seem to be working, she went to silver-on-white. You can imagine how well THAT worked!

Anyway, the obsessive need to cover as much as possible with images so small they can’t even be really seen from any distance made me think of her. I imagine they think if they just add this next bit of information, everyone will see that they’re right!

Some are claiming mental illness as the reason (I never heard of a mental illness which turned you into a political terrorist, but I don’t know everything). A couple are saying sane things, but they are getting hounded down.

Not satisfied with trying to erase transgender people in the USA, Trump is trying to do it in the whole world. (I presume even if he is not successful at this, he can direct CBP to deny entry to the USA for transgender people.)

Trump administration wants to remove ‘gender’ from UN human rights documents (The Guardian, more at the link):

Trump administration wants to remove ‘gender’ from UN human rights documents

Exclusive: US officials have pushed for rewriting of collective statements to remove language inclusive of transgender people

Julian Borger in New York

Thu 25 Oct 2018 01.00 EDT
Last modified on Thu 25 Oct 2018 18.55 EDT

US officials at the United Nations are seeking to eliminate the word “gender” from UN human rights documents, most often replacing it with “woman”, apparently as part of the Trump administration’s campaign to define transgender people out of existence.

At recent meetings of the UN’s Third Committee, which is concerned with “social, humanitarian and cultural” rights, US officials have been pushing for the rewriting of general assembly policy statements to remove what the administration argues is vague and politically correct language, reflecting what it sees as an “ideology” of treating gender as an individual choice rather than an unchangeable biological fact.

For example, in a draft paper on trafficking in women and girls introduced by Germany and the Philippines earlier this month, the US wants to remove phrases such as “gender-based violence” and replace them with “violence against women”.

The US officials involved in the changes are understood to have been sent from Washington, and were not full-time diplomats in the US mission.

There was a guy in Pittsburgh back in the 1970’s, forget his name, who would walk around the downtown area wearing sandwich boards. They held a huge amount of ranting about how the Post Office was stealing all his mail. But there was never anything hostile about this guy. Just complaints about victimhood.

Pittsburgh has a small town feel about it, lots of folks would have friendly chats with him. Since his hygiene was an issue, many of the chats were, necessarily short.

Later I found out he had a wife and children in a local suburb.

He says a lot of people are on board with Democratic ideas like the economy and healthcare, so we should move left on economics and right on cultural things (specifically transgender issues).

He has a statement which is correct, but doesn’t use it correctly:

But when you are explaining nuance in politics, you are losing.

I’ve used that line myself, though shorter: When you’re explaining you’re losing.

The thing is, you don’t have to explain nuance when discussing rights or a more compassionate and open society.

We want people to have the opportunity to live satisfying and fulfilling lives. We don’t want the government dictating how you should live your life. As long as you’re not hurting someone else, it’s not the government’s business.

Or perhaps from the Declaration of Independence, slightly modified: We wish to secure the blessings of liberty for all, no more and no less.

You all know that a mail bomber isn’t as bad as a liberal mob gathered outside the Supreme Court chanting Kavanaugh has got to go with three or four of them pounding on the doors.

So, let’s keep this all in perspective!

And more for the “JFC” file:
From the WaPo “profile” on Cesar Sayoc:

The white van he drove to deliver pizzas was covered in disturbing images, she said, so the restaurant required him to park it on the side where it could not be seen.

“It was puppets with their heads cut off, mannequins with their heads cut off, Ku Klux Klan, a black person being hung, anti-gay symbols, torchings, bombings you name it, it was all over his truck,” Gureghian said.

He was kept on because he did his work reliably, and good drivers are hard to find, she said. But he disturbed his co-workers with racist comments and texts.

Right: hard to find pizza-delivery drivers in mid-Florida: a few violent-bigotry-images ought to overlooked once in a while….

He certainly is willing to throw me overboard. If I ever get the chance to question him at a speaking engagement, he is not going to like my questions, and I am sure as hell not going to be civil.

I would never see him, so take some extra rage for me.

Suggests we clip the T off LGBT. Then next perhaps the B. Then since ladies first, the L. Finally dump the G for equality.

I presume he doesn’t want to give up his rights however. Reminds me of this discussion on a proposed non-discrimination ordinance brought forth by a pastor in Missouri. The ordinance passed.

And he was asked if he saw his picture on the van and also said he heard about it, but no he has not.

Though Christopher Wray said the FBI had identified the bomber late last night, and some are speculating that might be why Mr. Trump went on his unhinged (hinges being a liberal plot) Twitter rant really early in the morning, I’m not sure his rant was related to that.

He was going steadily on the bomb conspiracy nonsense for some time, and I suspect with an imminent arrest, the FBI would not want to tell Trump and have him blast it out all over Twitter, or one of his staff leak it. (Warning to the bomber, even if unintentional.)

I suspect Mr. Trump was surprised by the arrest when it was completed. If I was Mr. Wray, I sure wouldn’t have told him before it was done. (Aside from the fact they might have missed the bomber when they moved to arrest him, if might have turned into a disaster like a shootout or an explosion.)

Having the idea that the FBI director can’t speak to the President about an attempt to stop a domestic terrorist plot deeply frustrates me.

With previous presidents I remember in my life, from Nixon to Obama (too young to remember Johnson and Eisenhower) I can see them keeping quiet or even seeking advice. They would all have done things such as plan with their staff so regardless of how the mission came out they would be ready to address the public.

The Paranoid Style in American Politics (Harper’s, November 1964, more at the link, the lede):

It had been around a long time before the Radical Right discovered it—and its targets have ranged from “the international bankers” to Masons, Jesuits, and munitions makers.

American politics has often been an arena for angry minds. In recent years we have seen angry minds at work mainly among extreme right-wingers, who have now demonstrated in the Goldwater movement how much political leverage can be got out of the animosities and passions of a small minority. But behind this I believe there is a style of mind that is far from new and that is not necessarily right-wing. I call it the paranoid style simply because no other word adequately evokes the sense of heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy that I have in mind. In using the expression “paranoid style” I am not speaking in a clinical sense, but borrowing a clinical term for other purposes. I have neither the competence nor the desire to classify any figures of the past or present as certifiable lunatics. In fact, the idea of the paranoid style as a force in politics would have little contemporary relevance or historical value if it were applied only to men with profoundly disturbed minds. It is the use of paranoid modes of expression by more or less normal people that makes the phenomenon significant.

People will still say “I didn’t leave the GOP, the GOP left me.” My wife says that as her explanation for becoming a Libertarian. (Her first Presidential vote was Ronald Reagan in 1984. Mine was Jimmy Carter in 1980.)

It is mostly an issue of straight ticket voting and has been a problem for years…supposedly affects both sides. They call it user error but really badly designed machines and no incentive to fix. I always warn my kids…check final page before casting that ballot!

texastribune.org

“The issue is occurring primarily with the U.S. Senate race selections, because it is at the top of the ballot,” said Sam Taylor, a spokesman for the secretary of state.

The problem is happening with Hart eSlate voting machines, which are used in 82 of Texas’ 254 counties. Around 7.2 million registered voters live in those counties, which account for 46 percent of registered voters in the entire state. And three of the five counties with the most registered voters, Harris, Tarrant and Travis, use them. Hart InterCivic eSlate did not respond to a request for comment.

So what should you do if you’re in one of those counties? Easy. Double-check all your votes before submitting your ballot.

According to their secretary of state’s office, Hart eSlate voting machines have an “enter” button and a selection wheel to help voters select their choice candidate. The office advises voters to use one button at a time and to not hit the “enter” button or use the selection wheel until the page is fully rendered.

I’d like to vote on a paper ballot.

We have nice new machines in rockwall that should probably be used everywhere. Touch screen, and then you can review the votes at the end. Then it prints a paper ballot that you can further review before putting it in the holding machine.

Showed up at 4:30. There was a steady line. It looks like there were about 4500 people that have voted so far here in rockwall. That’s about 20% of the voting population.

I haven’t seem him used by the other nightly MSNBC shows for a long time. I get the feeling he isn’t liked by many other than Chuckles.

“…What’s shocking about what we’ve seen from Sayoc’s social media feeds is just how ordinary they are in the Trump online ecosystem. The slurry of conspiracy theories (particularly all things Soros), birtherism, xenophobia, boomer memes, and MAGA spank-bank material in his Twitter and Facebook feeds is the raw distillate from Infowars, Breitbart, and Fox.

I could find feeds identical to this by the dozen just by scanning my latest crop of trolls. Sayoc isn’t a one-off loner radicalized by a few edge-case media outlets; he’s an inevitable outcome of an alternative-reality media silo that increasingly defines the intellectual landscape of the Trump right.”

I guess I can understand how people who think of themselves as Conservatives, and who cling to principles they always thought defined Conservatism might be upset that others have usurped the name, but really, at some point you have to take a movement’s name for itself seriously. There are a lot more people who now define Conservatism as Trumpism than who define it otherwise.

The Ghost of a Flea  Oct 26, 2018 • 3:44:04pm

My thoughts are a bit muddled so I’ll keep this short:

People are going to focus on the paranoid rhetoric and miss something important…the emotional context of the paranoid rhetoric.

This asshole was having a great time. “Believing” that the country is half traitors and eaten by “globalist” conspiracy with a body count excited him. Threats and extended fantasies of victory and retaliation were a way of having fun. Embrace of the Trumpian worldview, where all hitting is self-defense, is something he enjoys.

That’s the context of the bombs. He wasn’t scared, or desperate, or driven by a moral urgency. He was getting off.

…and I frankly suspect that there’s no deeper level to his understanding of the world, so there’s no way to discern his sincerity of belief—hence the quote marks above. His general understanding is informed by “serious” premise of existential threat, but his specific acts—performative threats, gloating, building shitty bombs decorated with stupid memes—are unserious. He targets a liberal “elite” that are at once lethal enough to merit summary death and harmless enough that they can publically harassed and threatened.

It’s bullshit all the way down, but it’s dangerous precisely because there’s no coherent thought process. We are dealing with individuals and institutions that have no guide but power and gratification…which are often the same thing, if you look at how they view the “correct” exercise of power.

In a sense they act like creationists trying to poke holes in Evolution by Natural Selection or Cosmology. Even if they could poke a hole in it, that doesn’t make their assertion true. That’s not how this works.

The thought I can’t finish being: this is an individual outcropping of a cultural phenomenon. It resembles clinical paranoia, even paranoid schizophrenia, because of the specific culture’s epistemology, style of reasoning, and their chosen set of images and icons.

What we are watching is people acting in a manner coherent with a worldview and its value system. The ones escalating faster to violence and picking more extreme forms of violence may be fucked in the head, but they differ in sociopathy-versus-empathy score, not in cognitive distortion or emotional disregulation.

re: #355 The Ghost of a Flea

The thought I can’t finish being: this is a natural outcropping of a cultural phenomenon.

It is why I call conservatism a religion. To stay part of a religion, any facts which are in opposition must be explained away (apologetics), ignored (cognitive dissonance or incuriosity), your religious views modified (change religions and repeat), or you’re forced to leave (deconvert).

The harder reality squeezes, the more dangerous zealots of the religion become.

When President Bush took the USA into war in Iraq, the left mostly protested. The right called us traitors.

When President Obama was elected, people called for him to be lynched. Someone shot at the White House.

In the Democratic Presidencies of my lifetime, every child of the President has been viciously attacked, from misogynistic smears to lies by conservatives.

While there are racists on the left as well, the overwhelming majority of them went over with Nixon’s Southern Strategy. That said, Goldwater was already starting to draw them in when he was pandering to the Ku Klux Klan, the White Citizens Councils (now the Council of Conservative Citizens, the folks who radicalised Dylann Roof), and the John Birch Society.

So the MAGAbomber “antifree”d himself.

Some years ago we watched a murder show about a woman who killed two of her husband’s with antifreeze, but when she wrote her witness statements, she spelled it Antifree. When she wrote a confession supposedly by her daughter, whom she also poisoned, but who survived, she again used Antifree. She got nailed over a misspelling.

As did this moron who misspelled the same words on the packages as he did on his social media posts. Gotcha, moron label.

With all the crap going on in Georgia with voter registrations, I would remind you that arch-segregationist Governor Lester Maddox only died fifteen years ago.

Reading about his last interview in 2001, he remained both a segregationist and popular with conservatives, though his view of segregation shifted slightly. He was of the opinion that it was unconstitutional to force integration and it was unconstitutional to force segregation.

Probably. But even if Hillary was the intended target she’s still an official Secret Service protectee and will be for the rest of her life even if Bill passes away before she does.

If the Justice department is not including Bill Clinton in the charges then they are 100% admitting that the person under attack was Hillary (without her husband) - which makes the case against trump very much stronger.

I heard part of the interview, his former boss was a liberal woman, and openly lesbian. She said that she knew of his political leanings, but believed in keeping personal and work life separate as long as it didn’t affect his job performance (which according to her was impeccable). Can’t say that I would be as generous regarding someone who collected KKK and Nazi regalia (which she mentioned seeing inside his van).

The part that pisses me off the most about this is that the manufacturer of the voting machines is blaming the changed votes on “Operator error” even with people providing photographic evidence of the flipped votes.

Also, the voting machines were reported two years ago with the same issue and the (republican) Sec.of State completely dismissed the claims.

The US is no democracy - it is a plutocracy - using the masses to enforce the rule of the wealthy.

Either Trump (or more likely his campaign staff) saw a weakness in the Electoral College system and the polling in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He put in a whirlwind series of appearances in specific areas of those states.

Coupled with Hillary Clinton’s team not catching what Trump’s team was up to (so she didn’t campaign at the very end there), that was just enough to put Team Trump over the top in the Electoral College.

Five elections were won by the minority candidate. The first was John Q. Adams (all over the map on political parties from the Federalists to the Democratic-Republicans to the National Republicans to the Whigs to Anti-Masonic).

The other four elections were all lost by popular vote by the Republican Party (two recently, Geo. W. Bush and Donald Trump).

Pittsburgh has a small town feel about it, lots of folks would have friendly chats with him. Since his hygiene was an issue, many of the chats were, necessarily short.

Riot Womenn up there have a problem though: Incitement to violence is only prosecuted after there is violence or if there is an imminent threat. Prior to violence, it’s protected speech, with very limited exceptions (Brandenburg v Ohio, 1969)

Thus, those odious rope-tree-journalist shirts at Trumpenfuhrer rallies are protected speech because they do not direct imminent violence.

Out there, public FB
Yes, Trumpism is a cult. It features Nuremberg-esque hate rallies, groupies, a volunteer violent wing (Proud Boys) a dedicated terrorist and a propaganda media network. Like other miscreants associated with Trump, that guy is in jail, soon to be convicted and in prison like some highly placed Trump agents or officials. We await the Mueller report, and we keep in mind the timely words of former Trump attorney Ty Cobb. “It’s not a witch hunt”.

“…O’Rourke’s “new way” campaign against politics-as-usual has drawn attention, and also money.

But much of what he says, particularly about immigration and healthcare, sounds like what Texas business conservatives used to say before the emergence of New York Republican Donald Trump.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says we shouldn’t deport Dreamer students over their parents’ mistakes. Former Gov. Rick Perry, now energy secretary, has said a border wall “doesn’t make sense.” President George W. Bush endorsed a path to legal status for those who came illegally but worked peacefully, supported the economy and showed good character.

These are the same Texas values that O’Rourke now defends.”

I’m a little more extreme in my music. But disrhythmia is awesome. Bangladeafy is good odd drum and bass. Lantlos is also good.

Are you familiar with the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum/Free Salamander Exhibit crew out of the Bay Area? They get scary close to vintage King Crimson, like on this track.

I heard an interview on NPR with his families lawyer. He says his mother is Italian and his father is Filipino. No Seminole in the family tree.

Or 88.

I read somewhere (I can’t find it now) where the alleged bomber praised Matthew Hale. He took over the Church of the Creator (the racist one, not the mainstream one), part of the Christian Identity Movement. (Those are the nutbars up the road from me who say on their Website they want to kill liberals, atheists, and “race-mixers.”)

Facets of CI ideology runs through a lot of conservative groups, though most don’t ascribe to the religion.

After the first murders by the group began in 1999 (sparked by Hale passing the Illinois Bar but denied a law license on ethical grounds), the mainstream media invited him to speak on television and in newspapers (instead of simply reporting on what he did), massively increasing his outreach for the group. (Culture-jamming.)

Hale solicited a murder on the judge which issued the order he had to change the name of his church due to copyright issues. He was arrested and imprisoned in 2005 for forty years.

LOL:

Still, it’s not much of a surprise. Kelly’s penchant for racially charged comments, after all, might just be a bit too tame for the network’s primetime lineup. Like, does she even read 4chan?

Today’s View from Nowhere Award goes to the Washington Post.

Hey, liberals, you’re doing yourselves no favor by clamoring for an end to the electoral college (Greg Abernathy)

I think I will still clamour. Not for the Electoral College per se, but expanding the House of Representatives to more accurately reflect the population differences in the states.

That has the effect of expanding the Electoral College, and is much easier to do (repeal a law vice a constitutional amendment).

Real Clear Politics Big Lie about Republicans. Fixed it for you.

Democrats’ Big Lie About Pre-Existing Conditions (Betsy McCaughey, September 18)

Across the U.S., Democratic campaign ads are telling voters a big lie. Dems are falsely claiming they’re protecting people with pre-existing medical conditions and warning that Republicans will take that protection away. The ads would have you believe Obamacare is the only way to protect people with pre-existing conditions. That’s false, and the outcome of the midterm elections could turn on this falsehood.

The Democratic super PAC allied with Senator Chuck Schumer is behind many ads, including one targeting Republican Josh Hawley, who is challenging Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, in a tight race. The ad says if Hawley is elected, millions of Missourians could lose their protections.

I’ve seen the Hawley adverts here, thanks to my very local ISP two states away.

I still do not understand why the president* can be the most racist bigot on the planet without fear of retribution - yet anyone else - even a FoxNews loved one - loses their job over it. I’m no fan of Megan & glad to see her go (although she can cry all the way to the bank), but as with Billy Bush - they lose their jobs & the orange horror says much worse & gets applauded.

Newsmax after NBC and Fox is a huge stepdown. No national show or prestige, and certainly not the money of the former two. If she’s interested in a media career, she’s more likely to get an investor(s) and start something she controls herself.

Megyn to me always seemed like a poor choice. She just didn’t have the personality for morning tv. She wasn’t gravitas enough for the hard news segments, and she never was the cuddy, personable type for the fashion and lifesytle segments. She could never shake her role at Fox and even begin to embrace the more diverse world of mainstream media.

Anymouse 🌹  Oct 26, 2018 • 6:56:11pm
One key prong of Republican propaganda attempting to discredit the Mueller investigation has been to claim Trump associates were targeted by informants. Perhaps the most brazen example was when Roger Stone claimed a Russian whose offer of dirt he entertained (but claims to have refused to pay for) was an FBI informant. But George Papapdopoulos has spawned an entire subindustry of such claims.

It appears that Maria Butina’s attorneys have adopted that approach. In a letter to her attorneys the prosecutors posted to the docket the other day, they insist (as DOJ has had to insist to Republicans in Congress) that they are not sitting on evidence of approaches by informants.

As flawed as they are — the NYT is one of the few voices still out there who do serious investigations. We don’t have sufficient publications out there who have the resources to pursue real stories and do original research, as opposed to republishing articles from other sources.

She couldn’t shake her role at Fox because it’s not a role. She’s a racist bigot. And she’s not terribly smart.

She might go off on her own but that’s Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin territory which won’t end well.

Then they should do their very serious jobs and quit with the never ending b_sh!t support of President trump - their both sides - is so off the planet. There are no both sides to trump. He incites violence, he supports despots - he wants to be king - and the NYT helps him every single day.
