Another Astounding Tiny Desk Concert: Alfredo Rodríguez Trio [VIDEO]

Oct. 18, 2018 | Felix Contreras — Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodríguez gave our office audience a very quick lesson on why pianists from that island nation are so impressive: they treat the piano as the percussion instrument it is. Rodríguez immediately let fly with an intense flurry of notes that were as melodic as they were rhythmic.

The mash up of European lyricism and Afro-Cuban percussion is at the heart of the Cuban piano tradition and it is very present in the first song. It wasn’t long before Rodríguez dug deep into rapid-fire syncopation along with drummer Michael Olivera and guitarist/ bassist Munir Hossn.

Iconic music producer/composer Quincy Jones heard Rodríguez during a performance at a European jazz festival and took him under this wing, eventually signing him to Jones’ management company. When you listen to the expansive and lyrical exploration of the second song in this Tiny Desk set, “Bloom,” it’s easy to hear what captured Jones’ attention.

The West Africa-based Yoruba spiritual tradition, commonly known as Santeria, infuses so much of Cuban daily life in music and Rodríguez closes with his take on the music dedicated to the Orisha Yemaya, the goddess of the ocean and all waters. The song’s melody is a derivation of the song associated to Yemaya and the Tiny Desk trio explores the rhythms of the melody, up to and including the sing-along at the end.

Every exposure to Cuban music presents an opportunity to walk alongside historical music figures and Santeria spirits alike. This performance is no exception. Watching these three performances repeatedly reveals new musical turns that slowly reveal how Alfredo Rodríguez is making a name for himself, alongside two incredibly talented, like-minded band mates.

Set List
“Dawn”
“Bloom”
“Yemaya”

I wasn’t aware you could use trolling commentary in a court filing.

Russian Firm Says Mueller Can’t Prove It Meddled in Election (Courthouse News Service)

Concord Management, the Russian company charged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller with interfering in the 2016 election, filed a a biting response to the prosecutor’s allegations Thursday, claiming Mueller has “mind-bendingly” failed to prove the company willfully intended to defraud the United States.

That’s not the trolling part, though. This is:

[Eric] Dubelier, of the Reed Smith law firm, wrote: “The special counsel’s retort has been that he was not required to charge willfulness because he did not charge violations of [the Federal Election Campaign Act or the Foreign Agent Registration Act.] Now in mind-bending, intergalactic, whiplash fashion, he says for the first time, I did, I did, I charged violations of FECA and FARA.”

In a footnote which stands out in the filing, Dubelier instructs the court to consider the “I did, I did” line to sound “a lot like I did, I did I taw a puddy tat. (Tweetie, 1948.)” [sic]

Hard to sue ‘em if you’re dead.

A$ long a$ Twitter benefit$ from people who $pend time writing there and ¢ontinue to make ex¢u$e$ for why they “have to be on Twitter” (and Fa¢eborg), Twitter will never be hurt by it.

Say Twitter gets hit with a payout of $50,000,000 or something. They slug it out in the courts because of deep pockets, getting the payout reduced. Or they settle out of court.

Their own rules say they are the sole arbiters of what constitutes a violation of their terms. The game is rigged at Twitter, and until people wise up and leave the platform, they will continue just as they are, defending Nazis and banning photos of women’s nipples as inappropriate.

Looks Like ‘Bomb Stuff’ Suspect Is Trump MAGA Idiot Of Our Dreams! (Wonkette)

That is quite a van! Indeed it is the van of literally every crazy Trump MAGA idiot who shows up to a Trump MAGA idiot rally. Zoom in and look at all the sniper targets we mean surveyor’s marks! Check out the stickers that almost exactly mirror the things Donald Trump tweets! Also he is into soccer!

Look, we know liberals are bad too, as they literally pry the chicken fingers out of Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s cold dead hands and call Ted Cruz a piece of shit in restaurants, but this appears to be the van of a biiiiiiiig Trump supporter who TRIED TO ASSASSINATE TWO FORMER PRESIDENTS AND A BUNCH OF FORMER INTELLIGENCE CHIEFS AND SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN AND ROBERT DE NIRO.

The fact he appears not to have attempted to bomb them very well is just more evidence that he’s an average Trump supporter.

Things heating up in Nebraska for the election:

Early Vote Requests for 10/26
Democrats: 4,212
Nonpartisan: 1,531
Republicans: 5,502
Unknown: 102
Total People: 11,347

Early Vote Requests to date:
Democrats: 66,096
Nonpartisan: 21,353
Republican: 76,215
Unknown: 865
Total People: 164,529

I wonder how those non-partisan votes are breaking, because they could be the difference between business as usual here and a blue wave across the High Plains.

My wife got an E-mail from Penzey’s Spices. A conservative was writing to them, objecting to the stickers they’re sending out with orders imprinted “I will vote 11.6.18” and cards which say “To cook is to care, to care is to vote.” (They are also promoting a chili powder freebie with a $5 order.)

Someone posted this on our Facebook page and I believe it is worth sharing with you:

“How incredibly biased your company is. I hope your conservative customers take a hard look at what you are really selling. You certainly do not want America to be great again. I am a proud Republican conservative and think our great president is making America great again!”

Penzey’s actually flamed back (behind the hide bar because it’s kind of long). Wow. That is some serious flamage.

And first off, let me say thanks for writing, to you and every other writer of the 30-40,000 comments I’ve read along these lines in the last two years. And yes, we are biased, biased in favor of the kindness at the heart of cooking. Through cooking we learn that when we take time to share kindness and care for those around us, the world becomes a better place. There was a time when this kindness was at home in both political parties. For now, at least, those days are past. Reading all these emails has been an education. At this point my response is:

“If you weren’t hurting anyone, you could believe whatever you wish and, for the most part, no one would say anything. But you are hurting people by what your support is keeping in power. Your support of racism, environmental devastation and the devaluation of our standing in the world is causing real harm not only to all of us right now, but to future generations as well.

“I understand how the realities our country is facing have been kept from you, and that your thoughts are no longer entirely your own. Doesn’t it seem odd to you how your mind can sincerely believe celebrities and business people should stay out of politics while at the very same time being equally sincerely excited about your celebrity businessman president? And I have no doubt that you love this country, but doesn’t it somewhere deep down bother you that we are turning our allies against us while empowering and enriching those who would do us harm?

“Somewhere along the way you gave up something inside you of who you are, something so fundamental to the functioning of democracy. Where once you would have held deep distrust for any candidate keeping their tax returns hidden, you came to see the hiding of the truth as admirable. Where once you saw loyalty as key to character, now it sure seems you are totally fine with third spouses, playboy models, and adult industry workers for all. I’ve known and enjoyed conservatives all my life, and I have to be honest with you and say this just does not sound like you.
“Please wake up. Your country needs you.”

The good news is that a whole lot of people who were supporting all of this just a short while ago are now waking up and rejecting the personality cult the Republican Party has become and are instead finding their own path.
We’ve also seen posted recently:

“I didn’t choose to leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party chose to leave me.”
“I, and the rest of my family, were born and bred Republicans. Donated $$, canvased for votes (both door-to-door and by phone), worked the polls…. And THIS current Republican Party in no way resembles the party we supported. I really can’t view it as Republican.”

“I am a lifelong Republican, and have never been more embarrassed to say so. I am working diligently in my state of NH to get Democrats elected!”
“Don’t let the label you have slapped on yourself not reflect the truth of what you believe. I grew up in a Republican family, and heck, even my mom isn’t Republican anymore.”

The even better news is, if you choose to make the change, from everything we’ve seen, a whole lot of people will be really-really happy that you did and they will welcome you with wide open arms. As much as the President himself is pushing the false notion that those who oppose him are driven by hate and anger, this simply isn’t true. Hate doesn’t drive people to work for transgender rights, racial equality, or the welcoming of asylum seekers. Just the opposite really.

For anyone who has come around to realizing supporting the President and those enabling him was a mistake but are now worried about how they will be treated if they come out and make the change, please don’t be. Really kind people are going to be very happy for you. Right now it’s not about where you have been so much as about where you’ve arrived. And now’s a good time to arrive at a good place. I think you will find the food tasty here, too. Not a lot of lonely desktop taco salads and buckets of deep-fried fast food. A big part of the fun in celebrating all the cultures that actually make America great is the Cooks you meet and the foods they share. Dig in!

The election is now right around the corner. As much as we believe every night is a good night to cook, and there’s nothing better to do with your time than cooking, we’re good with re-heating something Tuesday 11.6.18 to give you time to get out to vote. With that in mind, and understanding some foods are even more tasty after a day or even two, through this weekend we are offering you your choice of a couple of really good Chili Powders Free with just a $5 purchase.

Our Chili 3000 is a great Chili Powder with a bright and exciting traditional flavor that is all you have come to expect Chili to be. Chili 9000 takes it one step further and hints at the world of Chili flavor that is out there, but is also very much at home in America where we value all the cultures that make us who we are. Tasty stuff. Cook Chili Sunday 11.4. Refrigerate. Eat Chili Tuesday 11.6. Save time to vote!
To get your choice of half-cup $7+ value Chili, bring in this email or the coupon below to one of our stores and spend $5. Online at penzeys.com, once you’ve reached $5 in spending, enter 11455C in the apply code box at checkout for Chili 3000 or 11950C for Chili 9000. There’s no need to place the Chili in your basket, the codes will do that for you and for free!

And our full-size I Will Vote 11.6.18 refrigerator/bumper stickers are starting to be in short supply, but we do still have a quantity of the smaller lapel-sized stickers. These stickers are great for handing out while talking about the value in voting and just how important this election is. If you are part of an organized Get Out the Vote effort and think a bunch of these stickers would help, let us know at editor@penzeys.com. And yes, of course, these are available to whatever side you are on. Get Out the Vote is for everyone. Sooner or later the Republican Party is going to become something different. It would be good to have Cooks involved in what that is to be. Sooner rather than later please.

Thanks for being Cooks,
Bill

Current headline at Breitbart:

Donald Trump Thunders at Media for Trying to Smear His Supporters after Bomb Scares

This is brilliant. You got your god king Trump “thundering”, you got your evil media “smearing”, and as an extra you get to downplay actual fucking bombs being sent in the mail as “scares”.

It’s hard to stomach the comment section there, though I will say it is pretty spot on in identifying the raw version of the talking points that will shortly emerge through hate radio and blogs (and these days onto major media and the WH).

THE STIKERS ARE TWO NUE!1! for example. I guess it never occurred to these folks that someone capable of sending fucking pipe bombs to 12 people might also be fanatical about the quality of his vehicular window decorations.

Wonkette did an article about them last year. My wife had never heard of them, and usually rolls her eyes at Wonkette. They also had some recipes from Penzey’s in the article to try, which piqued my wife’s interest, so she spent about $200 on spices.

Penzey’s usually uses UPS for shipping, but they were quite willing to use the Post Office when she wrote them. Now she’s hooked.

Additionally, every time she orders something from them, they send recipe cards of other things to try. Eating around here is now like a round-the-world gastronomic tour.

Could it just be that the US political campaigns - like no others in the world - just last too long. Used to be there were a few months campaign free between elections, but because there is no other way for trump to address those who would abuse their neighbors, he started campaigning the day after he was elected.

Where I live, election campaigns run for 4 - 6 weeks. Think of all the money people could spend on much more worthwhile things if they weren’t giving to political campaigns 24/7

I am rather proud to say - I have never donated cash to a political campaign, nor felt the need to do so - our government funding for same is much more than needed. (I have worked for a political campaign - very different to donating cash).

Bannon set that up. By filing for reëlection the same day he was inaugurated (never done before in the history of the country), it allowed him certain protections under campaign finance laws. It also set the stage for his never-ending Nuremberg rallies, since he could combine official visits with campaigning and the taxpayers are on the hook for it.

“….As I was parking my car, I could hear a woman’s voice on a loudspeaker, playing on a loop that stated something like this (paraphrasing the very first sentence because I didn’t catch it on audio recording).

“President Trump values the first amendment, just as much as he values the second amendment. This is a private event paid for and hosted by ‘Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.’ and you came to hear the President. To accommodate the right to free speech and peaceful assembly while securing an orderly rally, we have provided a secure area outside the gates for all protestors and we ask anyone choosing to demonstrate to please exit to that secure area. Despite this accommodation some individuals may seek to disrupt our patriotic event and President Trump needs YOUR help in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere at all times. If a protest starts near you please do not in any way touch or harm a protestor. Please notify law enforcement officers of the location of the protestor by holding a rally sign over your head and chanting “Trump! Trump! Trump!” Encourage others around you to do the same until officers can remove the protestor from the rally. We’re glad you are here for this special occasion with Donald Trump. Thank you for helping us make America great again!” Her matter of fact instructions fade into the first notes of “Freebird” at top volume. My break with reality begins, and I feel actual chills in this new dystopia.

The second time I heard the looped instructions in the lilting woman’s voice, I was in line, and became aware of everyone around me surveying each other, looking for any signs of “otherness” and ready to call anyone out for thinking or speaking differently.

This was encouraged mob mentality. Groupthink at its worst. Before even entering the arena, we were being asked to join Trump’s army of peer pressure, intolerance and sameness. That initial shock of just how deep his need for control runs still sends shivers down my spine.”

I prefer nashi (Japanese for what Americans call “Asian pears”.) Much superior in flavor.

However, the problem in the US is that the fruit is picked way too early, to keep it from being damaged during shipment. So Americans end up with a rather tasteless, hard fruit, and not the juicy delicious fruit that ripe-on-the-tree brings.

In case you’re wondering: The longest World Series game is 14 innings, done three times — 2015 Game 1 (Mets-Royals), 2005 Game 3 (Astros-White Sox) and 1916 Game 2 (Red Sox- Robins … aka Dodgers).

I love nashi. My local sushi house (Uchi) uses it in a couple of fusion dishes (famously, Machi Kure). The chef, Tyson Cole has got a James Beard award up on the wall.

There was a guy in Pittsburgh back in the 1970’s, forget his name, who would walk around the downtown area wearing sandwich boards. They held a huge amount of ranting about how the Post Office was stealing all his mail. But there was never anything hostile about this guy. Just complaints about victimhood.

Pittsburgh has a small town feel about it, lots of folks would have friendly chats with him. Since his hygiene was an issue, many of the chats were, necessarily short.

Later I found out he had a wife and children in a local suburb.

Robert Lansberry. He even ran for Congress as a Libertarian!

To be clear, the existence of these spear points doesn’t rewrite human history in North America, it just expands it. Clovis points didn’t appear out of nowhere. They had precursors, which have now been found. This is how archeology works. Good for the field teams that made these finds.

It’s such a well worn practice in popular media to say this or that has to be “rewritten”.

As you point out, the Clovis point makers just didn’t pop out of the ground.

The published paper on which a spate of the media articles have appeared the past few days has in it quite a bit of information summarizing pre-Clovis discoveries. All of them point to the initial peopling of the Americas a couple of thousand years before the Clovis people.

This latest discovery has the advantage of providing good dating material via optically stimulated luminescence, which supports the dating of artefacts immediately before and after the Clovis people.

It’s all neat, and dovetails quite well with the genetic data.

re: #148 freetoken

The stories of lotto winners who are miserable are “just so” logical fallacies. They tend to be promoted by people who claim to have earned their wealth by their industry or intelligence, and winning a large chunck of money in a lotto is somehow unfair to that idea of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.

So out come the financial wizards with anecdotal stories of people who were “unhappy”: divorce over new-found wealth, people who blew all their money (because money=happiness), &c.

There are even a couple cases where people were murdered over lotto tickets (ignoring people get murdered for money all the time, and a winning lotto ticket is effectively money).

It would probably be difficult to fashion a scientific study of “those who are happy versus unhappy.” The best you could do is a survey with subjective values for “happy,” and those could still be cherry-picked for the “just so” unhappy stories.

The Swedish study (not peer reviewed) that was the core of a NYT article the other day, and which has since been copied by less credible outlets, supports the idea that lottery winners are doing quite fine. The problem, as noted in the NYT, is that “happiness” is a hard concept to quantify and study. Yet from what the Swedes were able to tell, lottery winners are not worse off than others.

154
Anymouse 🌹  Oct 27, 2018 • 1:39:12am

re: #151 Anymouse 🌹

Here’s an anecdotal story in opposition to that:

My wife points out when she lived in Colorado Springs, there was a guy who worked a slightly-above minimum wage job who won several million dollars in the lotto. He continued to work his job and banked his money, not telling his coworkers.

He was only outed as a millionaire at his job after he won a second lotto prize of several million dollars. His happiness was not tied to his new-found wealth but what he was doing.

There is a persistent rumour in the military that if you win a large lotto prize they will administratively discharge you, allegedly because you can assert undue influence on your command.

I can’t speak for the other services, but when I was in the Navy I was interested in whether that was true or not. Searching for people who were administratively discharged for that I could find nothing, and there is nothing about that in Navy Regulations. I’m not sure why that rumour exists.

Single-handed sailor  Oct 27, 2018 • 1:48:40am

156
Anymouse 🌹  Oct 27, 2018 • 1:49:26am

From that guy’s article I note some assertions:

Studies continually show that more lottery tickets are sold in poorer zip codes than in wealthier ones.

There are more poor people than wealthy people. Quelle surprise.

The story of the week might just be Earl Livingston, an 87-year-old who fell and broke his hip on the way to buy a Mega Millions ticket. Upon hospitalization, the staff offered him a chance to get in on their lottery pool. He accepted, and one of their tickets matched all five white balls to win a $1 million secondary prize.

Moral of the story kiddies: don’t go out and buy lotto tickets because you might break your hip after a fall. I might get hit by a Wal*Mart truck crossing US-26 today going to buy a Powerball ticket.

Plus denigrating his win (a few thousand dollars) - “It’s just not worth it folks.”

That brings up my anecdotal story of my poverty-stricken mother who won “just a few thousand dollars” - enough for me to be an exchange student in Brazil for over a year. For every one of these sad-sack stories you can find another “changed your life” story, but those changed-your-life stories don’t fit the narrative of “I earned my wealth through intelligence or industry, and you should too or you’ll be unhappy.”

157
freetoken  Oct 27, 2018 • 1:50:29am

I assert that the reason these horror stories about lotteries are so often pushed, and why claims of poor people are doing it to themselves by playing the lottery are so popular (especially among the self-declared “wealth” experts), is because here in America we don’t really want to look at how disparately money is distributed in our society.

It’s a common misinterpretation of data, that I’ve come across in investigative journalism articles on the subject too.

A great many lottery tickets are sold in gas stations and liquor/convenience stores.

And guess what - such outlets are usually on the corners of heavily trafficked streets.

And you know what else is also located on heavily trafficked streets?

Low rent apartments.

Rich people live in neighborhoods away from the noise and pollution of such areas.

But guess what, middle class employed people stop at those stores when going here or there… so that is where they buy their tickets.

160
freetoken  Oct 27, 2018 • 1:56:55am

I’ve repeatedly stated that the state lotteries offer horrible payouts for the odds. The only reason to play is to win the jackpot, and the thrill of anticipating it (and that is the “entertainment”.)

But I am getting quite annoyed at all the misplaced fretting over the lottery.

State lotteries are not the problem in American society today.

However, the great deal of misunderstanding surrounding the state lotteries is indicative of how lacking in critical thinking so many even allegedly educated people are.

These electoral maps show how the GOP is dependent on uneducated white men for its electoral success.

On that electoral map: I read that article. It quite succinctly explains why the GOP works so hard to suppress the minority vote, and are generally opposed to all immigration (not just so-called illegal immigration).

Maybe not in this election, maybe not in the next one, but the demographic shift will grind them into irrelevance. Thus you get people like Steve King (R-IA4) making arguments which are white-supremacist in nature about “shifting culture” or whatnot. Conservatives don’t seem to have good arguments for “why you should vote GOP” so they’re left with lying (like the healthcare lies they are claiming, such as supporting covering preëexisting conditions on insurance while voting against that) or suppression.

Lying is more likely to snag those who cannot critically think about the issue or research how their representative actually votes, and suppression does the rest.

That sounds cool. (Damn, no Netflix at Chez Tumbleweed.) I liked Sabrina in the Archie comic books when I was a pre-teen (the Christian outfit which bought the series banished Sabrina as a character - suffer not a witch to live and all), and I got a kick out of the television series (no Groovy Ghoulies there though).

I do like it when Nate Silver publishes other things than political horseraces based on study or survey data (not so much his sports articles):

Only 6 Percent Of U.S. Terrorists Act Alone, But They Are Prolific

As of 2015, lone wolves accounted for 6 percent of all terrorists in the U.S. — but they were responsible for 25 percent of all U.S. terrorist attacks. That’s according to a report by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), the organization that manages the Global Terrorism Database. Historically, lone wolves have been able to avoid arrest for longer periods of time than terrorists who act in groups.

Usually she doesn’t buy pumpkin spice stuff. She bakes things like pumpkin pies, bread, and cookies using actual pumpkin (not the canned stuff), primarily because she likes to do seasonal baking projects. (Also a good way to build/bribe good will with the neighbours: “Would you like some homemade pumpkin pie? Cookies? Cake? Bread?”)

Well, Dreyer’s Pumpkin Pie flavored ice cream was how we figured out what gave my girlfriend those sneezing fits after eating certain things. It was seasonal-crap-on-sale time and we got Pumpkin Pie and Eggnog at the same time. Same ice cream, pretty much the same spices, right? But the Pumpkin Pie was colored with artificial colors and the Eggnog was colored very slightly off-white with annatto, and the Eggnog made her sneeze.

So that’s one pumpkin-pie-flavored thing that served a useful purpose. Now if they’d just stop coloring cheddar cheese orange with the stuff….

Penzey’s actually flamed back (behind the hide bar because it’s kind of long). Wow. That is some serious flamage.

I assert that the reason these horror stories about lotteries are so often pushed, and why claims of poor people are doing it to themselves by playing the lottery are so popular (especially among the self-declared “wealth” experts), is because here in America we don’t really want to look at how disparately money is distributed in our society.

There’s also the Those People don’t deserve money, how dare they! driving that narrative. How could Those People ever be happy? They’re Those People, the great unwashed.

As for the cost of that dog and cat milk, the stuff is goat’s milk. At the price they’re selling it, that works out to $281 plus shipping per gallon of milk.

Mail voting live updates (you poor devils):

Let’s see: Ballot, instruction form, return envelope (which if you mail you have to sign on the outside but no particular information other than an attestation you live in the precinct.

Check ballot to ensure there are no marks, and it has a pair of check signatures. (It does.) Check the serial number to ensure it matches the return envelope (presumably to check if a ballot is challenged, so much for a secret ballot, #116, good to go).

Vote by mail Colorado style — Arapahoe county has an opt-in feature that notifies you of the status of your ballot, when it was mailed out and when the voted ballot has been received by the clerk’s office. I just got the official confirmation that yes, they have my vote in hand. My husband, son and mother’s ballots have also been turned in — that makes four straight Dem voters to the good.

My friend in Denver city/county says SHE got an ‘I voted’ sticker in her mail ballot. My county seems to be too chintzy to do that *sniff*

Sort of miss the civic community feeling of going to vote with the neighbors en masse. Would have been a rite of passage to take the kid in for his first vote a couple of years ago. On the other hand, don’t have to wrangle my mom into her wheelchair to the poll and pray for good weather on Election Day. If vote-by-mail lets more people vote with a trackable paper ballot, it’s an acceptable trade-off.

It’s weird, too, how you can get that perfect sound, leave everything as is, then come back and it’s just not quite right.

The amp sound (based on a Mesa Lone Star combo) is actually quite good, but the means of controlling it is a little wacky at this point. I set up an expression pedal to control amp gain on a continuous curve, but in a live situation it’s just a little too unpredictable - lean on the pedal too hard and the tone turns to mush. I’m just going to set up a series of patches with the same amp tone and various stages of gain, and then assign a boost to a foot switch. That way I’ll know exactly how much boost I’m adding.

Raining hard up here in northern New England, too. DS’s high school soccer tourney game was postponed until tomorrow. Not sure about walking the dog; doggo doesn’t look too thrilled either.

My wife tells me how I should vote. /s

Presumably a husband could pressure a wife on how to vote. With polling, if you were married to a jerk like that, he could also prevent her from going to the polls. The problem is the jerk, not the method.

My wife says she only voted once by absentee ballot before moving here (to protest Diebold voting machines). She always voted in person.

I have never voted at a polling station in my life. All the time I was in the Navy it was by Federal absentee ballot, homeless people don’t get to vote, I missed the 2008 election because I could not provide proper ID to Oklahoma in time.

When I moved here Nebraska was already doing mail voting in rural areas.

Pretty much every person in my town voted for Donald Trump.

When I went into the store this morning, I was wearing my “I voted” sticker. The owner said “you know, we probably cancelled each others votes out.”

Well, that’s part of the point of elections, one candidate’s voters cancel out all the votes of the other, plus one vote.

All I knew going with my parents to vote were voting machines, so I was surprised when things went backwards the first time I got to vote in 1972—it was just like the famous butterfly ballots from 2000. I don’t know how many hanging chads I left.

The ballot has been the same here for years now, used to be you had to go to a polling place to fill it out and feed it into the machine, now they just mail it to you.

Anyway, you shamed me into finally filling out my ballot—we’ll see if I can be arsed getting it in the mail before the mail guy gets here. Sorry I can’t help the national sitch much, Maria Cantwell and Adam Smith are going to win anyway. I wish I could vote in the district next door to keep the egregious Dino Rossi from taking over from that anal fistula Reichert. Carving out a district that straddles the fucking mountains should be illegal, but that’s the only way they could get him in.

Mr. C. and I mailed our ballots on Thursday. Our county has gone to all vote-by-mail, which is a return to paper ballots (unless you go in to the county offices and use a machine) which is good, but I do miss walking down to my friendly local polling place to vote. There was a degree of civic engagement which is missing now.

I’ve voted on everything from the old behemoths with levers, to punch cards, to various systems of marking paper ballots. Given the choice, I’d go back a decade to when we had the paper ballots that we marked by filling in the middle part of an arrow pointing to the candidate’s name and fed into a scanner at the polling place. It was easy to see who you were voting for, could be tabulated quickly and was not subject to a lot of technical difficulties.

2016:

“…It’s a global power structure that is responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities.”

These are standard anti-Semitic themes and storylines, using established anti-Semitic vocabulary lined up with high profile Jews as the only Americans other than Clinton who are apparently relevant to the story. As you can see by my transcription, the Jews come up to punctuate specific key phrases. Soros: “those who control the levers of power in Washington”; Yellen “global special interests”; Blankfein “put money into the pockets of handful of large corporations.”

The overwhelming majority of my township actually has college degrees. (Mostly in agriculture or business). In town, there are several people with eighth grade educations or less.

On my village board, I am the only person without a college degree. /anecdote

Your year abroad in high school, time abroad in the military, plus whatever technical, cultural, historical and language training you got in the military, means your education isn’t “just” high school.

I love a good conspiracy theory, because I used to be a heavy-duty JFK assassination conspiracy theorist back when it was still cool (before Oliver Stone ruined it for everyone), and an even heavier-duty UFO nut around the same time. I don’t really remember exactly when I abandoned those beliefs, or what the specific turning point was, but I do remember that it was very sudden, like a light switch being turned on.

I know very well the internal logic of conspiracy thinking, and I have to say that by the standards of Dealey Plaza-lurking goons and UFO-spotting kooks, conspiracy theories in the age of Trump are embarrassingly stupid.

Among the stupidest I’ve seen so far have to do with the goofy-ass decor of the MAGAbomber’s van. RWNJ intellectual beacons like convicted felon Dinesh D’Sousa and famous junkie Rush Limbaugh have asserted that the shit plastered all over the guy’s van isn’t faded and sun-bleached, and that somehow indicates it’s all a hoax. Because obviously there’s no way he could have started on a batshit poster binge at the same time he decided to start building bombs, and both new hobbies couldn’t possibly be parts of the same mental process.

I find it really sad that these fucking idiots can find more than 3 people to listen to them. Frankly, I blame Alex Jones for commercializing conspiracy theories and dumbing them down for the lowest common mainstream kook denominator. He McDonald’s the shit out of fringe lunacy. There’s always exceptions but I really do think post high school education prepares people for dealing with a wide range of people.

I’m pretty sure that’s true as well. Unfortunately for me, there was no money. (My mother didn’t complete college until 1974, and the money was there only because of the widow education death benefit of the original GI Bill.)

The military does the same (since there are people from every part of the nation), and many deploy to different countries. (In the gastronomic department, I never would have heard of HP Sauce or Nutella, but I digress.)

And as that old Harper’s article I posted yesterday, conspiracy theories go all the way back to the founding of the Republic. I said exactly that, word for word, 2 years ago. Mr Stonekettle (*if that is his REAL NAME*) blocked me on Twitter for reasons I’m not sure about, but I am 100% sure it was trivial and petty.

Tom Nichols, whom I like a lot despite his repeated attempts at dissuasion, blocked me because I asked how it’s handled on TV studio sets like Jeopardy and CNN, etc when someone emits a heinous silent-but-deadly fart. You *know* it happens. Do they have an intern who waves it away with a cue card, or do they all have to sit there and marinate in it until the commercial break? Sometimes they dab sweat or stray hairs away from the faces of TV guests between segments. What do they do for farts? It was a legitimate question.

Yes, I am permanently 12.

Marco Rubio chastises people for speculating, speculates man is deranged and both-siderises the issue.

Tell me Marco, which party is it which attracts people who would shout “Death to All Jews?” Which ideology is it which spreads throughout the history of the country conspiracies about Masons, Catholics, immigrants, abolitionists, suffragettes, abortion rights, Jews, atheists, LGBT, &c.

Slavery, genocide, discrimination, all justified in the Bible.

And the “we’re under a new covenant” people are deflecting because that’s in the New Testament too.

Manifest Destiny was justified by the Bible. Every Confederate state used the Bible to justify slavery. Segregation was justified with the Bible. Opposition to abortion (never mentioned in the New Testament) is justified by the Bible, though there’s a procedure outlined for it in the Old Testament (and killing a foetus was a property crime if it wasn’t your foetus).

It’s almost as if a) They haven’t read their own book, or b) lying about it. Neither is really convincing to me about why I should believe as they.

I live in the big city by comparison.

Voting here used to be at the fire hall, with polling station staffed by volunteers, and two different ballots (those for people in the village, and those out in the township who cannot vote in our village board or cemetery board elections).

The state decided that in rural areas, transporting election materials and polling stations many miles to each township was expensive, and the fiscally-conservative option was mail voting.

When I moved here, they had just eliminated polling stations in the village. Now they have been completely eliminated in the state except Omaha, Lincoln, and South Sioux City (and in those places you can optionally request mail ballots).

I saw that post shortly after it went up and laughed my head off.

Rep. Fortenberry went crazy on social media, demanding the Lincoln police investigate this crime of vandalism.

I proposed there was two possibilities here, since he never said anything afterward about whether he spoke to the homeowner:

a) It really was a googly-eyed “crime” similar to that in Savannah with the Revolutionary War monument, where 2 seconds of pulling off the googly eyes would fix it, or the more conspiratorial idea

b) the person in question is actually an opponent of Rep. Fortenberry, obtained one of his signs, and did that to his own sign (not a crime).

Since our esteemed NE-1 representative hasn’t followed up on this, I’m going with b.

DT will never drop anything to go to where there is any problem. He is afraid of people who do not praise him. And like most bullies he is a coward.

And this was literally a no-brainer for Trump (which might explain why he didn’t call the Clintons or Obamas).

I could write the statement to read on the phone:

Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton, I am deeply sorry this happened to you, and outraged that someone would make such a brazen attack. As President, I am glad no one was hurt.

The FBI, ATF, and other law enforcement agencies are already working on finding the perpetrators, and when we do we will bring them to justice.

Put that out to the press after it’s done, Trump looks like he’s compassionate and a uniter against political violence. Gets press (since that’s what he’s interested in) for quite a while (this is the day Mr. Trump became presidential), sympathy from the public regardless of political stripe, &c.

I imagine someone on his staff might have even written something like that. For Mr. Trump, he can’t make such a call about him or his supporters.

I ordered flea meds for Scout from Chewy. I’d always used Petsmart, but Chewy got the order out in record time, and for free.

Then last week, I got a ‘Greetings from Florida’ postcard from Chewy, with a hand-lettered note saying they hoped the flea meds were working well.

I like their style. I’m gonna stay with them for a while.

That’s how I feel about BarkBox. I love them. Lots.

I don’t even want to have that son of a CENSORED’s face on my computer screen. I am too heartsick over this. I’m just so scared that professors I knew may be victims and if they are I will be even more distraught than I am now.

I have to shut the computer down.

Firefox and Chrome extension Make America Kittens Again fixes that with him, and a number of other Republican politicians. Additionally, you can add other people’s names.

addons.mozilla.org (Firefox)
chrome.google.com (Chrome)

Both extensions also work on Twitter images.

Personally, I believe that Donny is privately seething with rage over the events of the last 72 hours. When this week started, the press was spending more and more time talking about the caravan, with even journalists usually critical of him beginning to jump on the “Ban them all!” bandwagon. He was all prepared for a big showdown with blue state governors, putting soldiers on the border and the images that that would create.

Then the first bombs turned up, and he probably thought “It’s gotta be a hoax” or even entertained the possibility that a bomb would turn up at the White House and he could play the victim. But no bomb ever showed up in his mailbox or those of any other conservatives, every target was a Democrat that he personally hated. And quickly the press that had been working around to giving him praise was again at his throat, only this time it was for being…well, him.

So he gave a few prepared words about “unity” and “being nice,” while he hoped the investigation would drag out and possibly even lead to a Democrat. “Can’t be one of ours, we don’t do that!” he told himself quietly. He even bought into the idea that it was all a “false flag,” the Democrats deliberately sending bombs to themselves to gain sympathy and get bad news off the TV. But then a MAGAt was arrested, and another shot up a synagogue the day after. When you’re convinced that there’s a massive conspiracy against you, how else do you make sense of the events of this week other than to believe that it’s all a “Deep State” effort to defeat your moment of “glory”?

re: #411 Targetpractice

People were upset in some fora that the bombing attempts as they were happening were bad because they were pushing the humanitarian crisis which is the so-called caravan out of the news.

My opinion then and remains that the bombing coverage was good, because it took air away from the xenophobic narrative about “an invasion.”

Folks on social media were demanding the Army, suggesting they should be shot, &c. That’s all gone.

That doesn’t mean I prefer the bombings and shooting this morning to the caravan coverage. I would much rather find some other way to put the caravan fear-mongering out of the news. Unfortunately it takes something dramatic (or manufactured drama) to get in the news.

Today is my last Saturday as owner of a bike shop. New owner takes over next Thursday. To ‘celebrate’, I swept the sidewalk and washed the windows. New guy doesn’t even ‘think he’ll need’ the free week of me being here which has been offered. Yesterday, I was sad when he told me that. Today I’m OK with it.

To celebrate the sportsball event of yesterday (to this AM, I guess) I put on the Ry Cooder Chavez Ravine CD, and clicked the ‘repeat’ button. I will let it play 18 times, with enjoyment of each occasion.

Two hours at the grocery store and I come back to mass murder.

I was completely unaware until I picked up this thread where I left off before I headed out.

I’m speechless. Devastated. Sad.

My country is rudderless.

I’m sorry you came back to this horror. I’m about to log out and get some rest.

Unfortunately, this sort of violence is our country and always has been. Antisemitism, bombing and shooting churches associated with African-Americans, SS Saint Louis, anti-immigrant violence, that is exactly what this country always has been.

What is different now is the twenty-four hour news, cell phones with cameras, and the Internet. What would be local news is international news in minutes.

While the Twitter troll in the White House is signaling these sorts to come out from under their rocks, they are also being documented and sent everywhere. Such people whinge loudly within a day or two they find themselves fired from jobs and shunned by family and friends.

re: #345 Anymouse 🌹

I’ll defend Art Bell, for a number of reasons. I listened to Art Bell for a long time. Bell always sounded to me, even when I was eager to believe All The Things, like a weird guy broadcasting out of his trailer in the middle of the Nevada desert. I never heard him rant and rave like a madman, which separates him (in my estimation) from Alex Jones. Obliquely related side note: if you ignore content completely, there are pretty much no broadcasters in recent memory with a cadence and delivery as brilliantly suited to late-night radio as Art Bell.

I liken him to certain televangelists of the 1980s. Art Bell was more like Robert Tilton than he was like Pat Robertson. Both Tilton and Robertson are reprehensible, but Tilton’s greed and personal depravity somehow lacked the malice and venom of a figure like Robertson.

I’m not saying Art Bell wasn’t a kook, nor am I saying he didn’t contribute in some way to the mess we’re in today. But I think his contribution to the National Crazy was a fart in a hurricane compared to other contributors like Limbaugh and all the other AM talkers you can think of.
