An Antisemitic Mass Murder in Pittsburgh; Trump Blames the Synagogue for Not Having Armed Guards

US News • Views: 43,681

Saturday morning in Donald Trump’s America: 8 dead at Tree of Life synagogue today in Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania.

A gunman opened fire inside a busy synagogue during a service Saturday in Pittsburgh, killing eight people and injuring six others, CBS Pittsburgh/KDKA reports. The suspected gunman, identified as 48-year-old Robert Bowers, surrendered and was taken into custody, law enforcement sources told CBS News and KDKA.

Bowers burst into the Tree of Life Congregation and indiscriminately fired inside while shouting, “All Jews must die,” police sources told KDKA. He was armed with a possible AK 47 and two pistols, a law enforcement source told CBS News.

Our so-called president responded by blaming the synagogue for not having armed guards at the bris today.

The US government is in the hands of a cabal that is, so far, willing to trade street murder for tax cuts and Supreme Court seats.

Him and my idiot congressman Andy Biggs. I keep asking him why he won’t talk about the attempted bombings of Democratic leaders, and today, the shooting in the synagogue. The caravan is a month or two away; these guys are here and now.

From Daniel Dale—just before the sixty-minute-hate fest in Indianapolis:

Q: Anything to be done? Trump: “Well, it’s a violence that’s, uh, you look at the violence over the world. I mean the world has violence, the world is a violent world. And you think when you’re over it, it just sort of goes away, but then it comes back in the form of a madman.

He is talking about himself, but is not aware that he is talking about himself (bold=my emphasis). But he never listens anyway.

I suspect that’s part of it; if in fact they do lose ground - and depending on how much ground they lose - the MAGA backlash to a potential Blue Wave could get ugly. And by ugly I mean violent and bloody.

Stick with saying a specific Jew (and his unspecified worldwide conspirators with money and the same “globalist” position) is trying to control the world and replace white people.

Don’t say that Jews in general are using money and their “globalist” agenda to control the world and replace white people.

He’s sending out another demand for retribution and vengeance:

Trump on the Pittsburgh victims: “We pledge in their name to fight for a future of justice, safety, tolerance, morality, dignity and love. We must all rise above the hate…” He ad-libs: “And it doesn’t mean we can’t fight hard and be strong and say what’s on our mind.

He will never condemn violence.
We need to vote them out. New polling for GOV in GA, PA, CT, and NV looks better than a few weeks ago (DailyKos).

Enough talk and speculation about “the coming civil.” It’s here. We didn’t ask want it, we didn’t ask for it, and it is not we who have not chosen the path of violence and hate. As with the pro-slavery revolt of 1861, though, the enemy has been spoiling for it for decades because their leadership sees it as the only solution to their dilemma. It is on them.

Conduct yourselves accordingly.

White supremacists are really into dividing up the species into ‘superior’ and ‘inferior’. Women (white) only have the superior ability to make more white people. They are the inferior part of the superior color.

Sort of like the old gossip columns where you avoided saying the name of the subject outright, but dropped enough identifying details for the readers to get the gist.

The other thing going is a deliberate forgetting of the extent of antisemitism in Christian and European history and how it informs US prejudice, and specifically the worldview of conservatives, carried through the JBS and people like Billy Graham. The former deliberately imported Nazi tropes, such as the Frankfort School conspiracy and the related fear of “Cultural Marxism,” which are now central to social conservatism’s commentary on society; the latter mated supersessionist prejudice and blood libel with modern evangelism and the underlining of the importance of Israel. Both advanced an only slightly euphemistic version of the Protocols world Jewish conspiracy.

More amorphously, but I feel very important, is the appropriation of the idea of cultural degeneration…that new modes of expression weaken and mongrelize society…which is now ubiquitous to social conservatism. The attack of “elites” because they consume novel and radical ideas and arts is another borrowing from European antisemites, and “Cultural Marxism” as used by conservatives is a direct lift from the National Socialist cultural bolshevism.

Lots of conservatives love these constructs that derive from these sources because they invalidate, a priori, a great deal of criticism. They don’t want to acknowledge their origins, or their structure, because they have such great utility as rhetorical devices., so they’re cynically blind to the way that people convinced by these ideas can and routinely do fill in the omitted words.

White supremacists are really into dividing up the species into ‘superior’ and ‘inferior’. Women (white) only have the superior ability to make more white people. They are the inferior part of the superior color.

Shorter version: Haters never know where to draw the line.

It’s going to be interesting when they turn on the white Catholics generally, and the Italians and Irish specifically. And I’m sure it’ll happen soon enough

“Social media” is fine. The real problem is that people are assholes. Unfortunately, “social media” is used exclusively by people.

People who gripe about “social media” cling to that gripe because it seems like, at least in theory, SOMETHING could be DONE to make it better, or at least less bad.

But the real problem is the people. People are inherently fucked up, and there’s no fixing it. “Social Media” just lets you see a lot of examples all at once.

There were three police officers shot at Tree of Life. They are trained professionals. Here’s an idea: Handgun armed guards are feasible when you get rid of attackers’ semi-automatic weapons

Further the police at least today had some idea of what they were driving into

A security guard never knows whats coming or when

And of course they are so well trained and kept current in all sorts of terrorisitic scenarios.

Alternately, haters want to hate more than they want a coherent system of hate.

Because it’s fun to hate, it’s fun to have power and feel powerful, it’s fun to take what you want and justify it with hate, so why set formal boundaries?

Sexism and racism are less dogma and more like…rules of a game you choose to play. And if/when you get bored, you can tinker with the rules to make it entertaining again.

As I have said many times here: Even if you had 360º vision, you always have your gun in hand, finger on the trigger, and it was some kind of magical weapon that could fire in any direction as needed…the attacker knows what he’s going to do before you see him do it. What the paper said…

But Cruz was elected with no experience in any council or legislature, and it shows. His intransigence prevents him from currying support or negotiating deals to help Texas.

This Editorial Board has recommended conservative Republicans such as George W. Bush and Mitt Romney for president, along with U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison.

My friend likes to watch Real PD which is basically a live version of cops with like four or five departments around the country, and I’ve been roped into watching too often. Too many times I’ve seen cops on camera lose their cool in non-dangerous situations.

The last thing cops need are more high powered weapons

Likewise, the last thing ordinary citizens need are military grade weapons in the 21st century

Is it too soon to talk about guns? Cause this regular event of shooting people you disagree with, or shooting people because you can, only happens on a regular basis in one (non worn-torn) country in the world - the country that allows access to any type of gun by any type of person.

It only seems to happen when you have a political party owned by a lobby group that insists everyone has the right to own multiple weapons. There is consensus among the people of this country that limiting the supply of weapons is a good thing - but that view falls on deaf ears in one political party who have stacked the SC of the land to do their bidding.

Yoram Hazony pretending nationalism here doesn’t mean white nationalism.

Park MacDougald:

“…Hazony argues that Nazism, because it ignored national boundaries in pursuit of German hegemony in Europe, was actually a form imperial universalism rather than nationalism. But Nazi Germany was, in his terms, both imperialist and nationalist: its leaders attempted to abolish some nation-states, but they did so believing not that the Jews and Slavs would benefit from German rule but that the particular interests of the German nation required the Jews and Slavs to be physically destroyed.

The Nazi example indicates a deeper problem with the entire binary, which is that nationalism, as it has existed in history, is not a “principled standpoint that regards the world as governed best when nations are able to chart their own independent course”; it is something more like a political language, one that takes the nation as the source of legitimacy and the furtherance of its interests as the goal of politics.”

As a reminder how quickly things devolve if good people stand by and do nothing.

Dehumanisation: How Tutsis were reduced to cockroaches, snakes to be killed (The New Times, Rwanda’s principal newspaper, March 13, 2014).

The article is a brief historical piece on the Rwandan Genocide, and the run up (then) to the 20th anniversary of those events.

Like Hitler’s Nazi Germany (which the New Times refers to), in Rwanda denialism was spreading about the genocide, including the numbers, pedantry about word definitions and origins, plausible deniability (thanks for that phrase, Reagan), &c.

What conservatives here are doing is similar. People like Donald Trump with his thinly-veiled threats and suggestions, Rep. Steve King with his open white supremacy, Rep. Steve Scalise and conservative Web outlets with their rampant both-siderism (with an assist from the regular media - especially the New York Times, &c).

Exactly. The “good people” Trump praised after Charlottesville were shouting anti-Semitic chants. I also remember when the Trump administration refused to mention Jews in his first Holocaust memorial statement.

I see that Trump continued with his Nazi rally even after the tragedy today. He has no common decency. You would think he would cancel the rally out of respect for the families who have lost members today but naw. The show must go on.

They’ve raised $5.8 million dollars that way, apparently through cryptocurrency payments.

This sign is on the roadway just south of the entrance to Central Christian Church in Mesa on Lindsay Road. It’s put there by Center for Arizona Policy. I don’t know if it’s on the right of way (I suspect not) or if it’s on church property or on the property of the park next door. What makes it difficult is the city and the church made an agreement about the church’s use of the park.

The sign may be perfectly legal, but it’s also completely obnoxious. I tweeted at the church and CAP (and then at Cathi Herrod, the Aunt Lydia who leads CAP) that I’d be out there with a sign tomorrow morning if this sign is not down. Jeff Sessions Didn’t Want Alternatives To Census Citizenship Question: Official Huffington Post, more at the link, caution for autoplay video of AG Sessions giving the conservative definition of “judicial activism” (dog whistle for “rulings we don’t like):

Attorney General Jeff Sessions personally ordered Department of Justice officials not to meet with the Census Bureau to discuss alternatives to adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census, a top DOJ official said in a deposition Friday.

John Gore, the acting head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, revealed the attorney general’s personal involvement while testifying in a lawsuit challenging the question, according to a Friday court filing.

The plaintiffs in the case say Sessions’ move further supports their argument that a DOJ request for a citizenship question was meant to hide the Trump administration’s true intent.

The plaintiffs are 18 states, the District of Columbia, several cities and a handful of immigrant groups that argue the Commerce Department, which oversees the decennial census, had decided to add the question even before the DOJ made its request. The Justice Department had claimed that adding a citizenship question would help it get better data to enforce the Voting Rights Act ― a pretext, the plaintiffs say.

They don’t see it as a problem. That’s the problem. When they eject someone from their platform, it’s because of overwhelming outrage. They then fall back on “we did the right thing here, let’s move on.”

After that incident with the umbrella today, I really wonder if he is descending into some sort of dementia.

We have a solution for that too, but good luck getting his cabinet officials to call for setting him aside.

Moreover, that’s never been done under the XXV Amendment. I’m not sure how that plays out. He would still be the President, with Mike Pence as Acting President.

Does Trump still get to use Air Force 1 and go to his Nuremberg rallies? That would be a frickin’ nightmare.

State Media (FOX and hate talk and Christian radio) would be howling to the rafters.

Moreover, he only has to send a letter over to the Speaker of the House to state he is ready to take up his duties again (and there is no clause to actually prove that).

That amendment was a good idea, but written in a flawed way.

I think Donald’s floating Ivanka for the UN was to test the waters and see if she could go back to New York City and out of DC. Ivanka and Jared thought they would be the darlings of DC society. Instead, they’re treated as complicit assholes if they venture too far from the RW bubble. I also think that Ivanka will be the very last person Donald throws under the bus. She’ll go under but not until the bitter end.

Thanks for that link. I’ll be using it to try to shut down Power2Parent, a hate group in Nevada.

I wish I could use it against the Christian Identity church here, but “religious freedom” and “free speech” have a very broad interpretation in the I Amendment. Coupled with the Nineties Supreme Court ruling about incitement to violence, you pretty much have to draw a straight line from the speech to the act.

Plus those anti-government nutbars with a ton of sovereign citizen derp on their Website would most certainly go crying to the government for protection. On top of that, every wingnut from Nazi Creativity Movement members to the 3%er to the sovereign wackaloons would be all over the area.

If they are a hate group as you describe, perhaps a report to the Southern Poverty Law Center would help (there is no listing at SPLC for them).

This Russel Moore?

Southern Poverty Law Center Hatewatch article on the Southern Baptist Convention from March 2016

They note Moore is only not an extremist if you compare him to the guy he replaced.

Russell Moore, who replaced the virulently anti-LGBT Richard Land as President of the SBC’s ERLC, said Baptists should accept that their view of marriage puts them in the minority of Americans, rather than waging war on homosexuality. “We’re living in a different time,” he said, “where we have to learn how to understand what’s going on in the world around us.”

In spite of statements like these, in which the SBC may be trying to present a “kinder, gentler” face with regard to LGBT people, its practices tell a different story.

It has the history of Camp Nelson as a Union supply depot during the Civil War, which became a recruitment centre for African-American troops and a haven for slaves fleeing their owners.

Trump’s use of the Antiquities Act (for the first time) is totally a campaign stunt. Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY 6th), whose district the camp resides in, is running neck-and-neck against Democratic challenger, Amy McGrath. Legislation to make the camp a monument, sponsored by Barr, passed near unanimously in the House earlier this year. Turtle Mitch introduced matching legislation in the Senate already, but it hasn’t been brought forward for a vote yet.

Interesting. My wife got a poll from Hulu asking “Do you dislike Josh Hawley, Claire McCaskill, both, or neither?” (We’re still getting adverts on our streaming services for the Missouri Senate race.)

Well, since they don’t know we live almost in Wyoming, she gleefully stabbed the Josh Hawley button.

I’m going to be canvassing for Amy tomorrow; we’re going to send Barr home!

I would not be surprised to see some kind of reprisal attack against Nazis. People are beyond fed up and someone, somewhere will go over the edge. I hope it’s not another one like that dumbfuck shooting up the Congressional softball game, though anything at all can happen once civilized norms are thrown out. It will be interesting to see how the Cheeto gang reacts, and compare that to their reaction to the Pittsburgh massacre. For that matter, I am not sure how I will react. Depends on the specifics of the event, though I will always oppose violence except in defense of innocent life.

I know how I’ll react to some scenarios though. If Alex Jones is assassinated, for example, I will immediately begin churning out false flag theories: He was whacked by a rival conspira-liar, he let the Russians down somehow (probably by ripping them off) and they responded in their normal manner; he faked his death and has absconded to Russia and his waiting dacha, he was liquidated by space aliens fearing final exposure, etc. The possibilities are endless. He may or may not be dead, so we can start calling him Schrodinger’s asshole
