If your mother was Jewish when you were born, you’re a Jew. If your mother wasn’t Jewish when you were born, you’re not.
Regardless of who your father is. Regardless of whether you attend synagogue, observe the Sabbath, keep kosher, or follow any other Jewish practices and traditions, regardless of what you believe.
There’s Buddhist Jews and atheist Jews, but no rabbi would call them not Jews. They’re non-practicing Jews. There’s no equivalent to excommunication, even for the ones we wish we could (cough*Madoff*cough). The only way a born Jew can become not a Jew is to decide, deliberately and of one’s own free will, to convert to Christianity or Islam.
The short lesson is that Republicans believe that an individual is the best judge of what they need…unless that individual thinks that the community needs to work together, then a Republican thinks that the individual is cracked and needs a father figure to tell him what he “really” wants.

Regardless of the faith in question, the point of religious gatherings is to be welcoming and open and worship in union. Locking doors certainly prevents that (and anyone coming late, too bad for you).
The point of being in a synagogue, a church, a mosque, or a temple is not to cower in fear. It’s supposed to be a celebration.
AP’s hot take up there is just another example of not addressing the real problem here. The “just so” story (if they’d’ve only locked their doors, they wouldn’t have been shot.) That’s not much different than the NRA’s line (if they’d only been armed, they wouldn’t’ve been shot.)
The actual answer is changing the way society thinks about guns, which is hard. It was hard with seat belts, it was hard with drunken driving, it’s hard with civil rights.
The March for Our Lives members are working on that, the same way MADD did with drunken driving or the Civil Rights Movement did (and continues) with civil rights.

Regardless of the faith in question, the point of religious gatherings is to be welcoming and open and worship in union. Locking doors certainly prevents that (and anyone coming late, too bad for you).
The point of being in a synagogue, a church, a mosque, or a temple is not to cower in fear. It’s supposed to be a celebration.
AP’s hot take up there is just another example of not addressing the real problem here. The “just so” story (if they’d’ve only locked their doors, they wouldn’t have been shot.) That’s not much different than the NRA’s line (if they’d only been armed, they wouldn’t’ve been shot.)
The actual answer is changing the way society thinks about guns, which is hard. It was hard with seat belts, it was hard with drunken driving, it’s hard with civil rights.The March for Our Lives members are working on that, the same way MADD did with drunken driving or the Civil Rights Movement did (and continues) with civil rights.

I was raised Catholic and that is in a way how we were taught. The one True Religion they said. But they also said God created everyone and knew all things and that murder was a great sin against The Commandments.
And right off I was confused and asking questions about how could others be in the wrong religion when God made them too.
I stayed for the education. Once I was in college I left the religion behind.
Plus just like all the different sects of Jews, there are different groups of Catholics.
How can it be the one true religion if there are other Catholic sects?

My Grand Uncle was acquainted with Art Rooney, Sr’s brother since both men went to Dusquene and were priests who served as chaplains in WWII. Uncle Bill was an open minded man too. Story was that his sister(my Nana)’s mother in law was worried about attending a wedding in a Protestant church(her granddaughter, one of my Dad’s cousin) was marrying a Protestant and Uncle Bill reassured her that there was nothing wrong with being in a Protestant church. Uncle Bill was also parish priest for a predominately African-American parish in Louisiana. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a perfect history when it comes to race but I’m proud of the fact that my family was from there and that those who were from there were open minded people who judged men and women on their own merits rather than trivialities like race or religion.

The Civil War was mainly regional because slavery by that time was concentrated in the south. But a number of slave states stayed in the union because they considered the breakup bad. But there were a number of other northerners that didn’t want the war.
The Southern strategy was to make the war so unpalatable for enough northerners that they would sue for peace. It might have worked if they had approached it differently.

I don’t know how many times I have said this, but no. My twitter handle which I have used all of twice is in this format. That is just a default name that twitter suggests and if you are too lazy to try 100 different names before finding one that isn’t taken and you just accept the twitter suggestion, that is what you get.

Frum was at least honest in admitting the laws existed…before arguing that they should be ignored because if we allowed every refugee from South America in, then millions would flood here.
