Sigh. I was rewatching the Post tonight on HBO; the decision supporting the press was 6-3 in its favor. I am confident the current Court would rule 5-4 in favor of the White House.

Also, the Republican Party of the 1860’s did the Transcontinental Railroad. And raised taxes enough to pay for the entire war without any national debt.

An interesting effect of Democratic candidates getting so much money rather than PACs is that while Democratic candidates are outspending GOP candidate 55 to 45% on ads, they are actually receiving 60% of the airtime. That’s because stations are required to give the lowest rate to candidates, but outside groups must pay full price. m.dailykos.com

There is new evidence of @BrianKempGA’s efforts to suppress votes in Georgia. @Greg_Palast found that more than 340,000 voters were purged. Kemp claimed that they had all left Georgia or moved to another country. Palast reports that none had moved. rol.st

Does every Republican Secretary of State engage in purging minority voters? They cannot win honestly so they have to rig the results.

Two PowerBall jackpot winners tonight (one from each, Iowa and New York.)

But the annuitized pot was nowhere near the advertised $750M, but was $687.8M:

$687.8 Million Powerball Jackpot Won in Iowa and New York

Two tickets sold in Iowa and New York matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s Powerball(r) drawing. The lucky ticket holders will split the fourth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.

The jackpot was an estimated $687.8 million at the time of the drawing with a cash option of $396.2 million. Each ticket is worth an annuitized $343.9 million or $198.1 million cash. The $687.8 million jackpot is based on actual sales for the drawing.

[…]

Perhaps lottery fatigue has set in, or because it was the end of the month, or both, but ticket sales were below what was expected.

I think the fact that the secondary prizes are so few is hurting the draw lottery sales. For a few years now the draw lotteries of the States have been only steady or declining in sales, while scratcher tickets have skyrocketed to the majority of the state lotteries’ incomes.

This has been one of the most fucked up weeks I’ve ever seen in United States politics. I wasn’t around for the late 60s, which IMO were more fucked up than what we’re dealing with now. I still have this sense of foreboding, that things will get worse before they get better. I’ve lost sleep thinking about it.

I lived through that period as a child. I missed most of the foreboding feeling until the 1968, when it seemed we were going to hell in a handbasket. I was 12 then and more able to sense the foreboding-ness.

Pollster finds that Brexiters believe the lies of the Brexiteers, still:

Public wrong on key facts around Brexit and impact of EU membership

[…]

EU immigrants’ contribution to public finances: Only 29% of the public correctly think that immigrants from European countries pay £4.7bn more in taxes than they receive in welfare benefits and services. Leave supporters are least likely to correctly identify that this is the case (16%) and most likely to wrongly think that European immigrants contribute less than they take out (42%).

Crime: 56% of the public and 75% of Leave supporters think that European immigration has increased crime levels, when evidence from the MAC report finds no link.

Healthcare: 39% of the public and 53% of Leave supporters think that European immigration has led to a decline in the quality of healthcare services in the UK, when evidence from the MAC report shows this isn’t the case.

£350m claim: Two-thirds of the public (67%) have heard of the claim that the UK sends £350m a week to the EU, and 42% of these believe it is true, despite it being labelled a “misuse of statistics” by the UK Statistics Authority.

[…]

Right wing atavists around the world have in common that they don’t let the truth get in the way of their bigotry.

The bombs to Democratic politicians and Robert DeNiro, the deadly shootings of two Black Kroger patrons and the Synagogue shootings show that this country is moving in the wrong direction. And Trump didn’t have the decency to cancel his stupid rally to address these developments. We don’t have a President in the White House. We have a Man-Baby bully who gins up xenophobia and bigotry every chance he gets.

When I visited Moscow 12 years ago (when my son lived there) there were metal detectors and armed guards at the entrance to every synagogue. Literally one week before we came there was a knife attack at the Bolshaya Bronayya shul. Fortunately no one was killed. The knifer was tackled to the ground and 5 burly young yeshiva guys sat on his hands, feet and head until police came.

When we went to Frankfurt in 2008 there were police cars and barricades in front of the beautiful old Frankfurt shul because there had been a knife attack there too.

Conservatism is the ideology of the Klan and Jim Crow. Every time that ahistorical claptrap comes up it needs to be pushed against. Not because it will convince the person pushing it (apologetics for conservative racism), but to give someone who doesn’t know and is reading the correct information.

Propaganda which goes unanswered becomes the truth.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, as passed

The Senate version:
Democratic Party: 46-21 (69-31%)
Republican Party: 27-6 (82-18%)

The Senate version, voted on by the House:
Democratic Party: 153-91 (63-37%)
Republican Party: 136-35 (80-20%)

Almost all those Democrats and Republicans against were in the South (defined as the old Confederate States).

If Trump gets reelected, it will be because Dems spent more time fighting with each over their nominee than running against him. If there is anything we should avoid doing, it is repeating the mistake of ‘04 in thinking the election is ours to lose and so we can spend it arguing over what we want in our candidate rather than fighting the asshole in the Oval Office.

Conservatives will talk about states’ rights until the moment they are not in control of a state legislature.

Then it becomes “local control,” which itself falls apart as soon as they’re back in the majority of the state gov’t.

It’s also TOTALLY antithetical to all Jewish law. Which a rabbi certainly knows.

If your mother was Jewish when you were born, you’re a Jew. If your mother wasn’t Jewish when you were born, you’re not.

Regardless of who your father is. Regardless of whether you attend synagogue, observe the Sabbath, keep kosher, or follow any other Jewish practices and traditions, regardless of what you believe.

There’s Buddhist Jews and atheist Jews, but no rabbi would call them not Jews. They’re non-practicing Jews. There’s no equivalent to excommunication, even for the ones we wish we could (cough*Madoff*cough). The only way a born Jew can become not a Jew is to decide, deliberately and of one’s own free will, to convert to Christianity or Islam.

The short lesson is that Republicans believe that an individual is the best judge of what they need…unless that individual thinks that the community needs to work together, then a Republican thinks that the individual is cracked and needs a father figure to tell him what he “really” wants.

It’s absurd.

I made a comment yesterday about when will the Republicans try and pass legislation making it necessary for all public buildings to have armed security guards any time they are open to the public?

It slipped by unnoticed, but I want to bring it up again because if the NRA would have their way that is where we are headed.

I think I also added they may try to make it so that everyone above the age of 21 must have a gun and training.

The NRA’s wet dream. Think of the sales!

re: #168 Targetpractice

Should have had armed guards, should have locked the doors, when do they just get around to blaming them for being Jews?

The same argument is used for churches as well. Anything but the gun. Anything. Anything but the hateful rhetoric. Anything.

(I wonder if Mr. Johnson could provide a “rant font?”)

Regardless of the faith in question, the point of religious gatherings is to be welcoming and open and worship in union. Locking doors certainly prevents that (and anyone coming late, too bad for you).

The point of being in a synagogue, a church, a mosque, or a temple is not to cower in fear. It’s supposed to be a celebration.

AP’s hot take up there is just another example of not addressing the real problem here. The “just so” story (if they’d’ve only locked their doors, they wouldn’t have been shot.) That’s not much different than the NRA’s line (if they’d only been armed, they wouldn’t’ve been shot.)

The actual answer is changing the way society thinks about guns, which is hard. It was hard with seat belts, it was hard with drunken driving, it’s hard with civil rights.

The March for Our Lives members are working on that, the same way MADD did with drunken driving or the Civil Rights Movement did (and continues) with civil rights.

Militia offers to help stop caravan raise concern at border (Associated Press, more at the link):

HOUSTON (AP) — Militia groups and far-right activists are raising money and announcing plans to head to the Mexican border to help stop the caravan of Central Americans, echoing President Donald Trump’s attacks on the migrants making their way toward the U.S.

Exactly how many militia members will turn out is unclear, and as of Friday, the caravan of about 4,000 people was still some 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) and weeks away from reaching this country.

But the prospect of armed civilians at the border — and the escalating political rhetoric over immigration — have fueled fears of vigilantism at a time when tensions are already running high because of the mail bomb attacks against some of Trump’s critics.

The U.S. Border Patrol this week warned local landowners in Texas that it expects “possible armed civilians” to come onto their property because of the caravan.

Three activists told The Associated Press that they were going to the border or organizing others, and groups on Facebook have posted dire warnings about the caravan. One said it was “imperative that we have boots on the ground.” Another wrote: “WAR! SECURE THE BORDER NOW!”

(it gets crazier in the article afterwards)

As an aside, I always hated that “boots on the ground” phrase by chickenhawks trying to sound tough. When I was in the military, I wasn’t a pair of boots. I was a person.

As a second aside, if these folks have about 100 people, equally space them out along the border. That’ll do the trick. /s

Problem is it’s still free speech. The Supreme Court Brandenburg v Ohio case from the Nineties indicates it has to be a direct threat. As odious as that is, it is not a direct threat. Inflammatory speech is protected, and that’s what the douchebros over at Twitter Safety hide behind (never mind Twitter is not the government).

“…I saw it while reporting on Russia, where, after unexpected pro-democracy protests and the annexation of Crimea, Putin created an environment so vicious, so toxic (he called his critics “national traitors” and “a fifth column”) that, when assassins killed opposition leader Boris Nemtsov at the foot of the Kremlin walls in 2015, it was easy for people to blame the divisive political rhetoric as if it were a spontaneous weather pattern, rather than Putin himself for creating it. And everyone understood immediately the message it sent: Dissent is a deadly business. Putin may not have ordered Nemtsov’s assassination, but Russia’s elite could clearly see he wasn’t too upset about the outcome.”

Sounds very familiar, as if I heard it on cable news just this week.

Well, one person in Nebraska won $50,000 in the Powerball. I haven’t checked my ticket, it could be me.

The state is running a second chance drawing for MegaMillions and Powerball tickets ($10,000 and $20,000 respectively) at the end of the month. While still horrible, the odds on those are better than winning the same amount on those tickets.

The rules for those are you get an entry number for every play you bought. However, you must enter those numbers into the state lotto site (which means you have to have an account there).

So the odds would be number of tickets for each single line in the MegaMillions or Powerball, minus those which weren’t entered.

I did win one second chance drawing a couple years ago, $500 in the 2x2 lotto here. I’m tanned, rested, and ready for another.

One of the big problems with religions.

I was raised Catholic and that is in a way how we were taught. The one True Religion they said. But they also said God created everyone and knew all things and that murder was a great sin against The Commandments.

And right off I was confused and asking questions about how could others be in the wrong religion when God made them too.

I stayed for the education. Once I was in college I left the religion behind.

Plus just like all the different sects of Jews, there are different groups of Catholics.

re: #213 ObserverArt

One of the big problems with religions.

I was raised Catholic and that is in a way how we were taught. The one True Religion they said. But they also said God created everyone and knew all things and that murder was a great sin against The Commandments.

And right off I was confused and asking questions about how could others be in the wrong religion when God made them too.

I stayed for the education. Once I was in college I left the religion behind.

Plus just like all the different sects of Jews, there are different groups of Catholics.

How can it be the one true religion if there are other Catholic sects?

Humans that is why. They cannot get along.

Plus the Ten Commandments (out of the actual 513) don’t really do nuance, and the overwhelming majority of people who are not Christians also think murder is wrong.

An example of nuance: Theft is prohibited in the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not steal (KJV abridged version, which by the way is available in the unabridged Catholic version).

So I’m embedded as a cop with a terrorist plot, and I hear they are planning on a bunch of school bombings. They haven’t done it yet, but they’re talking about it.

Snooping around, I find the written plans for this: which schools, what dates, who will do it, &c.

I steal those plans to take to the investigators.

Did I just commit a heinous sin? Remember, they didn’t kill anyone yet, and there is no exception in the Ten Commandments (only in apologetics for the Ten Commandments).

Dan Rooney, the former owner of the Steelers came from an Irish-Catholic background but his middle name Milton was in honor of his father’s friend Milton who was Jewish. My Grand Uncle was acquainted with Art Rooney, Sr’s brother since both men went to Dusquene and were priests who served as chaplains in WWII. Uncle Bill was an open minded man too. Story was that his sister(my Nana)’s mother in law was worried about attending a wedding in a Protestant church(her granddaughter, one of my Dad’s cousin) was marrying a Protestant and Uncle Bill reassured her that there was nothing wrong with being in a Protestant church. Uncle Bill was also parish priest for a predominately African-American parish in Louisiana. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a perfect history when it comes to race but I’m proud of the fact that my family was from there and that those who were from there were open minded people who judged men and women on their own merits rather than trivialities like race or religion.

‘Steelmark’ logo designed by Lippincott and Margulies, 1958 for the American Iron and Steel Institute.
researchgate.net

“The company’s early design work included the Campbell Soup Company’s red-and-white can, the FTD Mercury logo, the Betty Crocker spoon, the G on General Mills products, and adaptations of the Coca-Cola logo, adding a sweeping white line to suggest the familiar curve of the Coke bottle. It also designed Chrysler’s pentastar, NBC’s stylized ”N,” and simplified Internal Revenue Service forms.”

“Margulies is a surname that, like its variants shown below, is derived from the Ashkenazi Hebrew pronunciation of the Hebrew word מרגליות‬, meaning pearls.”

The Civil War was mainly regional because slavery by that time was concentrated in the south. But a number of slave states stayed in the union because they considered the breakup bad. But there were a number of other northerners that didn’t want the war.

The Southern strategy was to make the war so unpalatable for enough northerners that they would sue for peace. It might have worked if they had approached it differently.

Right-wing social media site Gab loses funding and host company over connection to synagogue shooter Bowers (via Raw Story)

PayPal and Stripe did not feel Gab did enough to curb the activity of Bowers and others, and cut off their support of Gab. This effectively stifled Gab’s revenue streams: Gab doesn’t have advertising and relies of the sales of “Pro” accounts.

Gab’s host, Joylent, is also moving to suspend the service for Terms of Service violations, giving Gab 24 hours to find another host. They lost their previous hosting service, Azure, in August.

I’m seeing Mexican people walking about and in the grandstands, and they are having fun, some dressing up for Halloween and in racing themes. Men and women and children. They are smiling and waving at the cameras, I saw a crowd “wave” the other day, some are munching on goodies…everyone is getting ready to enjoy the race.
