We have plenty of time to prepare for their arrival and deal with them in a civilized manner, sending the military to stop them is an overblown political grandstanding gesture.

And how much of the military? What will their duties be? It costs a bunch of money to support troops in the field. What would the logistics look like? How about all the private property which abuts the border (III Amendment)?

Conservatives never talk about these things, but they’ve been screaming “Secure the border with the Army” all my life.

And there was the same argument offered during the Potato Famine as in other mass migrations: “We can’t take all of them! If we let in one, the rest will flood in!”

Besides which, the National Guard was deployed months ago under orders from Donny to “protect the border.” They instead spent weeks being little more than coffee runners while the border agents amassed their ever-shrinking force on the border and caught all of diddly and squat. Their union bitched that it was ineffective, the military bitched that it had been a waste, and it cost a lot of money that could have gone to more productive uses.

But most people don’t remember that because the media stopped talking about the deployment to move to a new hot story and the evaluations of the wasted effort were a one-day story buried towards the back of the paper/website.

Actually, Donnie tried to order it, failed because California, New Mexico, and Arizona all said not unless you pay for it, then Texas Governor Greg Abbot ordered his guard to the border (which he has the authority for).

Moreover, the TNG sitting in the field was left unsupplied, local residents provided them food and water.

Nice sentiments (and a drastically needed change in policy, IMHO), but likely to founder on the disgraceful fact that there is an enormous political lobby in this country who are only willing to “track, analyze and punish political violence” as long as they (and they alone) get to define the parameters of said “violence” , and make sure that enforcement efforts are only directed at those actors who aren’t part of their “lobby”.

Reminder: that 2009 report by DHS (?) on domestic right-wing terrorism that got 86ed by the Obama Admin (?) after Republicans and conservatives threw various shit-fits over the very notion that “patriotic” Americans might even remotely be considered any manner of “threat” to the country (unlike the “eco-terrorists” who were giving them the vapors back then).

Remember why McInnes and his Proud Thugs were in Manhattan in the first place. They were invited by the Metropolitan Republican Club, to reenact the assassination of Japanese leftist politician Inejiro Asanuma, with McInnes playing the role of Otoya Yamaguchi, the right wing assassin. McInnes called him a hero. So yes, he is inciting violence against Democrats.

To be clearer. I am not asking for there to be violence. But often violence begets a violent response. McInnes might come up on the short end of something which would seem like a form of justice for something his big mouth caused.

The Asanuma assassination was a worldwide sensation at the time (1960) because it not only happened on live TV, it was recorded with the then-new medium of video tape. Inejiro Asanuma Assassination Footage (1960)

There were also many still photographers present and one of them, Yanushi Nagao, won the Pultizer Prize for this amazing image of Yamaguchi attempting a followup blow after he had already run the sword through Asanuma once.

this story is four days old…I had not heard about it

Koeberle Bull had never met the man who contacted her on Facebook - calling her a “wanna be” black woman and telling her that he hoped her “black children gets hung for you being so stupid.”

Worried for her biracial children, the 40-year-old mother of three said she contacted local authorities in Lumberton Township, New Jersey, telling them about the chilling Facebook message she received from a stranger three states away, in Kentucky.

Then, she said, she reached out to Kentucky State Police.

In the process, authorities said, Ms Bull may have helped police prevent a school shooting.

Kentucky State Police officials said the man, 20-year-old Dylan Jarrell, was found last week with a firearm and more than 200 rounds of ammunition, posing a “credible and imminent” threat to two school districts in western Kentucky.

He was arrested on two counts of second-degree “terroristic threatening” and one count of harassing communications, according to police.

“He was caught backing out of his driveway with the tools he needed to commit this heinous act,” Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rick Sanders told a news conference.

What should Canada do if there’s a civil war in the U.S.?
Audio at link

According to writer Stephen Marche, all signs point to a burgeoning civil war in America.
Between a series of social and political upheavals, a stream of natural disasters, and Donald Trump’s presidential policy of breaking norms, Marche says it’s only a matter of time.

In an essay called “America’s Next Civil War” for The Walrus, Marche paints a dystopian vision of an America riven by war, drought and paralyzing political dysfunction. And he poses the question — what should Canadians do to prepare for this terrifying scenario?

They will have to strengthen border security, against RW incursions and terrorist attacks. The Trudeau government’s positions will likely make them, and Canada generally, a peripheral target for enraged RWNJs. RW forces may also try to target American refugees or activists in Canada.
RW actions will probably be unusually ruthless, reckless, and brutal; a response to the rage, shock and general butthurt they will feel when they find that they don’t have all the guns after all, and the military and police do not all take their side.

How’s all? I start to type. Delete. Try again. Do not want to be wood on fire. Work you up. It’s bad, yes do I know it’s bad. The suckers who buy this shit show who have nothing to truly gain except spite and hate are the last to know.
The ones who count money more than lives care less.
Those who just try and do the best they can, will.
World is a flawed beautiful painting.
Always was. Here I go again. Typing. It’s been rough for me because I care. Always did. My curse. So be it. Many good and gracious things happening in my life.
Still not quite sure with all the shit I’ve endured why this time frame right now cooks me. Lost my waterproofing maybe. Always had my demons.
Just wanted to swing by and say hello.

There have been a whole lot of Trump Country stories set in the Rust Belt — which seem to be swinging hard back to Democrats right now. Talked to some Johnstown, Pa. women who voted for Trump, regret it, and are now voting for Bob Casey and other Dems:

I’ve been saying for a while that a lot of those tRump votes were soft. People seem to think he has 62,000,000 hardcore supporters, but I’ve said I didn’t think he could break 60,000,000 in 2020. Now I don’t know if he could break 50,000,000.

The mistake people make is that they think he’ll still be running against Hillary Clinton. Of course, to listen to his speeches he might be—but that’s not what the ballots are going to say.

The problem is that Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc.’s broadcast network, Fox, still is viewed by those who supposedly hate Fox News but have yet to make the ownership connection.

Really.

The money all goes into the same coffers (the Murdoch’s first of all.)

Even after the imminent split (into a New Fox), the broadcast network will be bundled with the Fox News cable channels.

Perhaps people need to communicate to the companies directly. Tell them that if you have a need for their product you will seek it out a competing product elsewhere or will stop using it if you do already if they can’t drop fox. If a company gets a 100 or so “strongly worded letters” or pushback on social media it can get attention. Depends on how persistent people are. And not deranged about it.

Some of Fox’s advertisers like Jenny Craig and South Beach Diet intentionally seek out people like the typical Fox News consumer, because they are looking for customers who are easy to convince by association.

The insurance companies may be more responsive to letters, but I bet they will have to get many of them as they are quite large companies.

Atlanta is definitely at the bottom center. The largest blob in the lower left quadrant is Nashville, Huntsville is next blob south, Chattanooga is the blob to the southeast. Northeast of Atlanta you can see the I-85 corridor clearly: Greenville, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Raleigh. South of Charlotte is Columbia, and southwest of that is Augusta.

You can track the edge of Lake Erie around Detroit to Cleveland.

The bottom center is probably Cincinnati Atlanta.

As insincere as they may be (I notice that Rick Wilson went completely silent on the Kavanaugh vote), they’re providing a valuable service IMO. There are probably quite a few Trump voters who have developed pretty serious buyer’s remorse in the last two years.

I say let the Wilsons and Kristols talk to them. If they’re wavering, they’re probably more likely to listen to a long-time conservative than a liberal.

They’re going to revert once Trump is gone, the question is how far will they go. Some may begin to temper their conservatism, become more critical than they were in the past of the efforts of their party to spread the gospel. Others may truly be reformed, may believe that their belief system is beyond redemption and adopt a new one.

But many are just anti-Trump and, once he has left the stage for good, simply revert to “Party Uber Allies” because that’s all they’ve ever known. They don’t hate Donny because of what he’s selling, they hate him personally and hate the stink he’s leaving on their belief system. All they see right now is the time they’re gonna have to spend scrubbing it off.

NeverTrump conservatives are wasting their time appearing on MSNBC and CNN. At the same time they can’t go to any conservative outlet to air their views because the epistemic closure is so complete. Armed US militia groups prepare to see off migrant caravan at the Mexico border

Self-appointed militia groups are planning to head to the Mexican border to help halt the caravan of Central American migrants heading to the US.

Border Patrol officials have already warned landowners in Texas that it expects “possible armed civilians” to go onto their properties because of the caravan.

The activists, who are raising money for their plan, are planning to arm themselves with guns and bulletproof vests in an effort to secure America’s border against the caravan of about 4,000 people.

Some people have posted dire warnings on Facebook about the caravan. One said it was “imperative that we have boots on the ground.” Another wrote: “War! Secure the border now!”

Following the Chinese model of thought-policing. Prevent universities from fair and frank analysis/exploration of political systems. Here is China, universities are barred from discussing dangerous ideas like democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, public protests, and other such non-harmonious stuff. The subjects have lately been expanded to include religion — except to condemn it — and Western religious holidays, like Christmas and Easter.

So, we can have a “winter party” around Christmastime, but we can’t *call* it a Christmas party. Meanwhile, the street cleaning trucks around here play “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” all year round as they ply the streets.

Hillary Clinton leaves door open for 2020 run: ‘I’d like to be president’

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during an event over the weekend left the door open to a possible 2020 run, saying that even though she doesn’t want to run, “I’d like to be president.”

Clinton’s comments come as speculation has increased over whether she will launch another bid after the midterm elections.

“Do you want to run again?” Recode’s Kara Swisher asked during a Friday night Q&A with Clinton.

“No,” Clinton replied quickly, sparking laughter from the audience. But when Swisher pressed her further, she added: “I’d like to be president.”

Okay, my bad. I let my frustration with both-siderism and other manifestations of false objectivity get to me. There may be two sides to every story (usually more than two) but that does not mean they are equal. This approach legitimizes anything that can get a large enough media footprint. It is quite a spectacle to see media reporting even- handedly on a trump rally, with the same tone they would have used for Bush 41, while the reporters themselves are penned up like criminals and facing a constant barrage of obscenities and threats from the Trumpsters.
I am also frustrated with Americans’ lack of awareness of how this plays out overseas.

I’ll deploy my google-fu more diligently in the future though.

I think it’s time we invented other words that mean there and their and use them. We use both of those and they’re way too often.

I have a Facebook acquaintance, the parent of one of my son’s friends, who is still doing the “why can’t both sides be nice” thing. I don’t respond to him because it would be a waste, but it’s definitely gotten more shrill recently. I think he’s trying desperately to see both sides the same so he can justify his conservative votes.

This made me smile.

There was one very good team playing in these five games, and there was one great one. The former heads into another winter wondering what it will take to win it all. The latter will be parading down Boylston Street sometime around Halloween, and the glow from Sunday night’s cathartic ending might last straight through to Christmas.

President Trump, you are not welcome in Pittsburgh until you fully denounce white nationalism.

President Trump, you are not welcome in Pittsburgh until you stop targeting and endangering all minorities.

President Trump, you are not welcome in Pittsburgh until you commit yourself to compassionate, democratic policies that recognize the dignity of all of us.

It seems like Drumpf is realizing he’s losing the narrative, which he is. His bullshit is being overcome by events, which should have been obvious. His peons are acting out what he has asked them to do.

I’m going to bed. I have not commented very much this weekend because I have been so enraged about what has been happening. We are on the edge of a civil war, and this idiot in the White House has done his best, even if he didn’t realize it (He didn’t, he’s that clueless.), to kick it off before the mid-terms.

Get out and vote. Get out and vote. Repeat that every day to anyone who will listen. We vote or our democracy diePeace, and sweet scaly dreams.

Let’s hope that those who can vote will overwhelm the widespread voter suppression in red states and lead to a new day in this nation. Let us not forget the three attacks in this nation last week and the hatred that enabled them. And vote to stop this evil from spreading further.

Sweet scaly dreams to you too.
