trump thrives on confrontation - he goes to Pittsburgh to generate a little more hate & hopefully get some of his opponents arrested.
Andrew Gillum is pretty sharp. He’s got great answers to Rachel’s questions and he is pretty direct in taking on Trump.
He said his opponent, Ron DeSantis, is trying to make the election all about his (Gillum’s) color and Gillum said it is about the color of the red and blue algae that is leaking out and ruining the state because of the policies of the Republicans that have been running the state.
He also spouted his achievements as Tallahassee mayor, like best growing economy in the state and the lowest crime wave in 20 years.
He’s got a lot of polish on his talking points.

I’m terribly sorry about the likely loss of any real dialogue with your parents.
I lost most of my family decades ago over being an atheist, so I can relate.
On top of that, I had to tell my brother-in-law not to write me any more, we can’t have a relationship as long as he promotes conserva-lies.
My wife is saddened by this, but she agrees with me on this. He seems to have been lost to conspiratorial thinking - which is sad because he’s a high school science teacher, and holds a Masters Degree in geology.
He was ranting about a post I made on a state forum, which I forwarded to several people including him. I was concerned about the rhetoric about sending troops to the border to deal with people seeking asylum and the increasingly hateful rhetoric surrounding that.

More than anything else, the conservative propaganda which is FOX and its farm teams of right wing nut job Websites tearing apart families and friends and poisoning the well of discourse is possibly the most unforgivable thing I can think of thanks to Nixon and Reagan.

Also, a friend who has been a friend since I joined the Navy also seems to be heading the same way as my brother-in-law yesterday, though he made economic arguments mixed in with the conservative talking points (why is it I seem to understand how capitalism works with only a high school diploma than people who purportedly support capitalism).
He also has a college degree: He holds a PhD in physics. He teaches college-level physics. His claim to fame was as a disabled vet he got the VA to pay for eight years of college (they denied me college claiming epilepsy makes you unemployable while nearly dying from a motorcycle accident and having a mile of wire put in your body does not), and paid for him to intern at CERN in Geneva.
We used to have spirited political conversations in the Navy (there really isn’t much to do besides work on a ship). Now though … I can’t put it behind the privacy bar (the responses to his JAQing off questions took too much time and apparently Mr. Johnson’s home for the disillusioned rational people won’t accept a message that long).
Suffice to say:
He suggested we “can’t afford them” (despite being the wealthiest country in the history of the planet, with an annual GDP north of $16 trillion).
He suggested putting signs along the border saying “beyond this point you’; be shot” in Spanish (there’s another vet suggesting war crimes).
Never mind that Spanish isn’t the only language in Latin America (aside from the many official languages in Mexico, Guatemala, and Bolivia, the language of Brazil is Portuguese, Suriname is Dutch, French Guiana is French, Belize is English, &c). I dryly suggested the alternative would be to put up signs in the hundreds of official languages, and you could make a border wall out of signs.
I also asked him how many signs does he want on 1,100 miles of border … as we occasionally buy road signs in my village, I can attest they are about $80 each (not counting posts, installation, maintenance, &c). Which is cheaper: a slew of signs and paying people to go out in the desert to install them, or hiring a few more immigration judges and border patrol agents?

We used to have spirited political conversations in the Navy (there really isn’t much to do besides work on a ship). Now though … I can’t put it behind the privacy bar (the responses to his JAQing off questions took too much time and apparently Mr. Johnson’s home for the disillusioned rational people won’t accept a message that long).
Suffice to say:
He suggested we “can’t afford them” (despite being the wealthiest country in the history of the planet, with an annual GDP north of $16 trillion).
He suggested putting signs along the border saying “beyond this point you’; be shot” in Spanish (there’s another vet suggesting war crimes).
Never mind that Spanish isn’t the only language in Latin America (aside from the many official languages in Mexico, Guatemala, and Bolivia, the language of Brazil is Portuguese, Suriname is Dutch, French Guiana is French, Belize is English, &c). I dryly suggested the alternative would be to put up signs in the hundreds of official languages, and you could make a border wall out of signs.
I also asked him how many signs does he want on 1,100 miles of border … as we occasionally buy road signs in my village, I can attest they are about $80 each (not counting posts, installation, maintenance, &c). Which is cheaper: a slew of signs and paying people to go out in the desert to install them, or hiring a few more immigration judges and border patrol agents?

As Rep. Smith is on record saying he does not represent Democrats, I wrote them back.
I understand fast-food restaurants are franchises. Nevertheless, when the restaurant has a political sign bigger than the corporate sign, that means something to me.
As such, I wrote them, noting the address and location of the restaurant. I also noted we specifically rejected going there (that was our plan) and took our business to a competitor. If the company is advertising they support such a candidate, I assume they don’t want Democratic money either.

A good friend of ours who happens to be the sous chef at a local restaurant heard about the flyer and decided to head on over to have a talk with them. Let’s just preface this by saying that he’s not the kind of guy you interrupt and he took advantage of that. I can’t even begin to tell his story but the part where he looks at a the old ladies working the tent and asking them “So you’re OK with your daughters and granddaughters just cooking and having babies and no rights of their own?” just killed me. He told them that their Soros story was “bullshit” and anti-Semetic to boot. He also brought up Republicans embracing white nationalists and encouraging them to act out. He said that every time the men started spluttering, he just cut them off and rolled on over them. He ended it by telling them to check out the bumper stickers on his truck, all local Democrats he is backing. He ended it by saying good bye and walking away while they spluttered (but dared not call him back).
I’m now working on a Republican friend of ours who is starting to get pretty uncomfortable with the direction of his party. This guy is a racist (GOB from JAW-JA) a former prison guard in Cali and even he’s starting to distance himself from voting Republican. I’m working to get him to at least change his registration to small “i” independent. He’s not a bad guy in the sense that once he figured out that I’m not a racist, he cut the bullshit out. We have some pretty good/spirited conversations but he is a person who changes his mind when presented facts, which is sadly a rarity among conservatives.
I haven’t been commenting much because pain (OK, more pain) has made sitting for any length of time very uncomfortable. It seems that an MRI that I insisted I get (over my doctor’s advice) shows extensive disc narrowing in my lower spine from L1 to L4, with impingement at L3. The Doc thought more exercise would fix things up but after a couple of weeks of that I told him that while exercising is good, I’m in reasonable fit shape. My other question to him was when would the grinding and pain in my lower spine stop? He finally agreed to the MRI and the day afterward his nurse called me, gave me the results and told me that they were referring me to a neurosurgeon. The neuro is now reviewing the MRI and we’re waiting for his recommendation.
At least the Doc finally let loose the painkillers (5 Mg. Oxycodone 4X a day) which when combined with 400 Mg. of Advil 3X a day, allows me to keep moving and getting shit done. I’ve also added in 225 Mg of CBD (75 Mg. 3X a day), which makes a big difference in keeping the inflammation down. I’m still able to work and get stuff done around the house but I have to be careful or I’ll be flat on my back again. Sitting for any length of time sucks though but that’s the least of my problems…lol!
Regarding the synagogue shooting; Trump, the Republican party, Fox News, and the knuckledragging base (like our locals) who have been pushing the bullshit Soros conspiracy stories have the victims blood on all of their hands. They can proudly proclaim “We built this!” when it comes to the hate and division they have sown across our nation. There is no deniability here, the killer himself said that the Soros stories, inflammatory lies about the migrant caravan and Trump not stopping the caravan prompted him to attack the synagogue and kill Jews. He was reading and hearing about all of these horrible people who were coming to invade his country and since Trump and the Republicans wouldn’t act to save us, he was going to do it all by himself!
The MAGAbomber? That’s Trump’s baby, 101% of the way. Trump’s rants inspired the MAGAbomber to make a list of people that he was going to bomb, just to show his love for Adolph Jr. in the White House.
