CL’d again…

re: #11 Anymouse 🌹

rawstory.com

Meghan McCain (R-“reasonable conservative”) shows she is fact-challenged on “The View” in a discussion about Stacey Abrams and Oprah Winfrey.

Anna Navarro was on as a guest host.

McCain’s argument was Stacey Abrams (and Beto O’Rourke) should be careful because having people such as Oprah Winfrey campaigning will cause them to be viewed as “liberal elites.”

This is actually even bigger. Ana (one ‘n’) is still a registered R herself, so this is infighting as well as proof that Meghan isn’t a reasonable conservative anymore!

Now that Daddy is dead Meghan will become more open and honest with her extreme wingnut views. Daddy tempered her crazy and now he is gone, so is Meghan.

OT: Does anyone here have experience with Total Wireless as a cell phone provider? I’ve been on my daughter and son-in-law’s plan, but I’m getting a smart phone and it’s time to be an adult and have my own. I don’t use my current phone much, and never having had a smart phone I have no idea how much data I might use (probably not much, but you never know.) Prepaid seems like a good choice and they use Verizon’s system so the coverage will be good (Sprint is iffy in many places we go.)

So in 96 hours, we should be beginning to see the voting results of this year’s mid-terms.

It will either be the beginning of the end for American democracy, or the end of the beginning, where we will have to work like hell to put it back together again.

Hey, in good news, I voted straight Democratic ticket and if I wasn’t sure, voted for women. The polls were busy which was a shocker. Nevada has more registered Democrats than Republicans. From what I’ve read, both parties have been voting en force. I’m hoping that Democrats have decided to get off their butts and voted to get Heller out of the Senate. I must admit that I’ve been very impressed with the GOTV for Democrats. I’ve had countless people show up to my house encouraging me to vote. I’m hoping that is working on getting people to the polls.

Oh, and one of the ballot measures has to do with changing the Nevada Constitution to automatic voter registration and change of address whenever conducting business with the DMV. I don’t usually vote to change the constitution, but I like that one. It will have to be voted on again in two years, but crossing fingers that passes.

Why do you need to vote on it again? Do you have to reconsider amendments to make sure voters really meant it?

Yes, pretty much. It seems weird because some things I think need to be changed in the constitution immediately, but then there are others, like when they tried to make marriage between a man and a woman constitutional…well, it should take some years to make that happen.

Rick Wiles: The Laughable Right-Wing Effort to Take Down Mueller Is Really an Israeli Intelligence Operation to Protect Trump (Right Wing Watch, more at the link):

On his “TruNews” program last night, End Times broadcaster Rick Wiles floated a truly bizarre theory that the laughable right-wing effort to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller by accusing him of sexual assault is actually an Israeli intelligence operation designed to protect President Trump.

As Jared reported yesterday, disreputable right-wing operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman held an absurd press conference in which they alleged that Mueller had sexually assaulted a woman in 2010 and claimed that the allegations had been vetted and verified by a private investigation firm called Surefire Intelligence.

The only problem is that Surefire Intelligence doesn’t seem to actually exist, as all of the biographies of the supposed staff members listed on the website were fake and the phone number listed for the company went to Wohl’s mother’s voicemail. Among the fake photos used for the non-existent staff was one of Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli, which has convinced Wiles that this effort to discredit Mueller is being carried out by the Israelis.

Speaking of nutbars who Right Wing Watch reports on:

John Guandolo, the disgraced former FBI agent and right-wing conspiracy theorist who now trains law enforcement agencies around the country to identify seemingly anyone with dark skin and a beard as an Islamic terrorist, appeared on “The Alex Jones Show” yesterday to promote his theory that the recent deadly attack on a synagogue in Pittsburgh was really a Marxist/Jihadi operation.

Guandolo, who has been suspended from Twitter for claiming that the shooting was carried out by a Marxist Democrat, told Jones that the attack, like the recent spate of mail bombs that had been sent to prominent Democrats, was part of a massive disinformation campaign. (more)

I had told a childhood friend that I would vote for him for constable. It’s a non-partisan office, but partisan on the ticket. I decided at the last minute that since he has not denounced Trump that I’ve seen, I wouldn’t and did not vote for him. I just left that blank. Funny thing is that Jimmy Kimmel had given him an endorsement and I was arguing with GOPers that the position was non-partisan and I’m a Democrat. He really is the most qualified. They were saying that they were withdrawing their vote for him based on Kimmel’s endorsement (hell, they’ve been friends since they were kids and I yelled at Kimmel when we were in marching band together because he couldn’t get his shit together!), but I withdrew my vote based on the fact that I won’t vote for anyone who won’t denounce Trump. Sorry, Jimmy Vega. I know I promised, but…

I am not sure of the Republican in charge thinking that made them think this would work out better for them?

Okay, that makes sense. We have electronic voting machines, but don’t have the option of voting straight party. We do have the paper ballot that prints after we choose our votes on the machine and we are supposed to check that to make sure our votes are recorded as we voted.

You know, though, he hasn’t posted anything Trump-like. I know that he is a Republican, but he’s only posted things that he is doing for Veterans, which is a lot, and just lots of community service things. The fact that he is GOP, though, and I agonized over this for a long time, has led me to not vote for him, even though constable is really a non-partisan office and I have no idea why they make it partisan. Just for that reason only is why I couldn’t bring myself to vote for him. Even thought he really seems like he’s got all the credentials to do the job well. He’s probably going to be elected, so I’m not worried about that. Just couldn’t bring myself to punch the button for him. :-( I hate that things have gotten to this point.

Brand new chairlift at Arapahoe Basin.

I have mixed feelings about this. The chairlift accesses an area called the Beavers and Steep Gullies. It was choice out-of-bounds terrain that required a hike back to Highway 6 and a hitchhike back to the base of the ski area, in other words, you had to be prepared and that weeded out the tourist element. The Steep Gullies, in particular, are not to be trifled with, high angle high consequence skiing, people have died in those lines. Now there’s a chairlift, and any yahoo with rental skis from Breeze can go over there now.

On the Republican convention: I loved it. The time that I always love Donald Trump the most is when he’s going after Hillary’s jugular. I like Chris Christie’s speech. I think we were actually a little light on her. Like, am I the only one that’s like we can go after her even harder? She should be sitting in jail

On Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland: I think this is exactly why people hate President Obama because he will possibly sacrifice this man’s career simply for his own political benefit.

On/to Trump during the primaries: What I’m looking for is someone who’s not going to take bullshit, not going to let the media run them around, and who is going to give it back to Obama. And you seem to be the only person who’s really doing it right now.

Brand new chairlift at Arapahoe Basin.

[Embedded content]

I have mixed feelings about this. The chairlift accesses an area called the Beavers and Steep Gullies. It was choice out-of-bounds terrain that required a hike back to Highway 6 and a hitchhike back to the base of the ski area, in other words, you had to be prepared and that weeded out the tourist element. The Steep Gullies, in particular, are not to be trifled with, high angle high consequence skiing, people have died in those lines. Now there’s a chairlift, and any yahoo with rental skis from Breeze can go over there now.

That area is all above the tree line, isn’t it? As I recall, it’s powder heaven, but there’s a lot of places where you can get into a world of shit.

I saw an ad on yahoo email, in the side bar, that said that if you’re with the VA, you can go to Walgreens and get a flu shot at no cost to you.

I’ll need to swing by and check that out. Thank you!

I was talking to one of my sisters today and she told me about the crazy in her town, Spokane. We all grew up there but I was smart and got my wife and kid out of there back in 1992, moving to Brookings, Oregon. The crazy?

Washington State Rep. Matt Shea (R-acist) and his “Biblical Basis for War”. If you want a definition of “Holy Shit”, this is shit is it . Conservative, Dominionist nutcase and five term state rep all wrapped up in one. Some choice bits:

Regarding section 10 of his Rules of War:

c. Make an offer of Peace before declaring war.
i. Not a negotiation or compromise of righteousness.
ii. Must surrender on terms of justice and righteousness:
1. Stop all abortions;
2. No same-sex marriage;
3. No idolatry or occultism;
4. No communism; and
5. Must obey Biblical law.
iii. If they yield - must pay share of work or taxes.
iv. If they do not yield - kill all males.

I’m guessing women fall under subsection g: Law of Booty

Knowing eastern Washington, he’ll probably coast to an easy victory.

re: #79 Anymouse 🌹

If you’re with the VA, you have Tricare coverage.

That aside, immunisations are covered by all insurance plans, so that’s mostly a pitch by Walgreens to get veterans.

I already got a shot at Safeway so I’ll pass on Walgreens. G’night y’all.

I’d pass on Walgreen’s most any time. I’d also pass on CVS, but that’s where I can get “free” flu shots for my family. CVS sucks. When I got divorced and moved, I chose the nearest pharmacy to me for my prescriptions which happened to be CVS. My insurance does not over omeprazole and CVS was going to charge me $120+ for a month for the generic! I get the same thing at Sav-On for $12. CVS can kiss my ass.

Mid-mountain is treeline, plenty of trees on the lower part. And yeah, there’s a lot of places where non-expert skiers can get in over their heads. And now there’s more places where that can happen. Steep Gullies is no joke.

Here they are from a plane:

Granted, the new chairlift also acts as an egress for the more lower angle terrain to the right in the picture, in fact Arapahoe Basin cut a few new runs in that area, which was mostly beetle killed evergreens, and all those runs are intermediate trails (blue square). But now it’s super easy to get to some dangerous terrain. I hope ski patrol brushes up on their rope rescue skills.

I thought I would throw in a couple of pictures of the tree(s) being taken out from behind our house. This is a pic of the base, which is freaking huge.

Soon to be a four foot high stump…

The tree split into two at the base so it’s two trees being taken out. Here’s a shot of one of the guys rigging up the next drop (he’s about 45 feet up with about 25 more to go):

I did this for one summer, that was enough for me…

We’re looking forward to more sun and so is our garden since the tree pretty much blocked all light from the west. That and reclaiming the back yard (stumps next!) from that damned tree.

ETA: The tree to the right of the one the guy is in is the other ‘side’ of the tree. They’re stripping both as they work their way up.

Last time I skied this was in 2011 when I was living in Denver. It was one of only three days I alpine skied that season as opposed to my usual telemark, because it was a big snow year and avalanching was a possibility. In high consequence terrain like that I want clamps that *release* my feet from my skis if need be, and my telemark bindings don’t release at all, they’re bear traps.

Yup. The new trails in the Beavers area, to the west of Steep Gullies are definitely mellower. But access and egress to Steep Gullies is now stoopid easy for any gomer from Texas (no offense to the good Texan skiers and snowboarders out there, they do exist!) to say to his buddies “HEY WATCH ME DO THIS!” and get cliffed out or worse.

My late Da was a prophet. In the summer of ‘68, we went trout fishing on the Snake for a couple of days (staying overnight adjacent to A-Basin (cheap!)) and climbed that ridge and looked down into the bowl. Gorgeous view.

I’d skied the bowl several times, and later that year broke my right leg on the transition from the upper bowl into the trees when my ski snagged under a branch and my fucking Marker Rotomat binding didn’t release.

Point being, my old man said, “Eventually, they’ll pull lifts up here and over toward Lenawee. Dangerous as hell.”

OK. So this is weird.

I run Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop (the one that was having problems I’d posted about, the Vaio). Anyway, so I did a patch and it solved nothing; I wound up hooking up an ethernet cable and using it that way to get internet access.

So yesterday evening, I put up a new wallpaper on my laptop - a change of scenery is always nice, as they say.

This morning - everything works perfectly. WiFi, no longer running in low graphics mode, etc.

I’m now left wondering WTF happened?

On the one hand, I can’t think of two more seemingly diametrically opposite ideas - but, on the other hand, there are strong elements of what’s often referred to as a “UFO religion” in both Scientology and the NoI. Perhaps it’s that odd similarity where they found some small measure of common ground and built from there.

This BREAKING HEADLINE is making the RWNJ channels, so be on the lookout. The Senate Judiciary Commitee is asking the DOJ to investigate a woman who falsely claimed she was the author of a letter alleging a rape by Kavanaugh in the back of a car. She has recanted, saying she did not write the letter and was only seeking attention.

But, the RW media is spinning this to suggest the letter itself and the allegations therein are false. In fact, the author of the letter still remains anonymous and the allegations could still have merit.

146
HappyWarrior  Nov 3, 2018 • 6:51:14am

So if I understand right? She claimed to have written the letter but has admitted that she didn’t write it. Not the same as the accusation itself being false. Mr. I wanted the Central Park Five executed after they were cleared really has a simpleton’s understanding of context.

The right wing noise machine is further obfuscating the matter, by conflating the woman’s lie about being the letter writer with the actual allegations in the letter. And no matter how people with decent reading comprehension skills explain the truth of the matter, it is now RWNJ canon that the entire letter is false.

Morning Lizardim. Happy Deer-Season Day from the cold and overcast wild north country. We had a weather break this week that let some of the farmers get out and clear off the last of their crops, so now it’s time to batten down the hatches and prepare for winter. Sorry I haven’t been around as much; after getting back from Rome, work immediately started a deluge of disasters of Biblical proportions, leading up to my taking a sick day to try to recover from the stress reactions (and a touch of the flu). I hope all has been well in my absence. How go things among the lizardfolk who are not currently engaged in pursuing quadruped herbivores with ranged weapons for the purposes of sport and gathering meat?

I think all Lizards are in a bit of a holding pattern waiting for Tuesday.

As far as weather…the sun is out! Haven’t seen it in days around Ohio. Rain, rain, and some more rain.

Luckily, most of the leaves are still on the trees and are now in fall colors. Might go out later this afternoon for country road drive and maybe take some colorful photos.

I leave the deer to themselves. Never have been a hunter.

Good morning. Glad to see they caught this asshole.

Police have made an arrest after disturbing messages of hate were found inside a Brooklyn synagogue Thursday evening, the latest in a string of anti-Semitic incidents across the nation.

26-year-old James Polite is charged with four counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime and making graffiti.

Polite has been sent to Woodhull Hospital for psychiatric observation, authorities say.

He is also charged with a string of arson fires in Williamsburg, including one at a yeshiva and another at a Jewish banquet hall.

Graffiti inside the Union Temple on Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights read “Kill all Jews” and “Hitler,” along with some other horribly offensive language.

Here at the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi, we transitioned out of the rain a few days ago, but the water levels are still pretty high here. The leaves went pretty much straight from “green” to “on the ground” here, we didn’t get a lot of time with the beautiful fall colors this season. At some point I will need to go chop up the fallen leaves with the lawn mower and then prep the snowblower for this season’s operations.

Brings back memories of growing up in Western PA and doing the Annual Deer Hunt with Dad and his pals. We would go every year into the cold forest and spend the day following deer tracks. Dad would have me as the spotter and we’d set up a camp fire to eat C-Rations for lunch. Dad would take a couple shots and always miss the deer, curse a bit. Sun goes down and we get in the car to go home and it never failed, Dad got his deer by hitting it on the road. Tie the deer up, take it to the ranger station and the rangers would laugh at Dad saying “Hey, you did it again, Frank!”.

One year they actually had a pool to guess what time Dad would check in with “The Road Kill Roadster”. I had to suppress my laughter at the Ranger’s office because Dad would have smacked me silly.

If you want to know what growing up in Western PA was like in the 60s/70s, three movies to watch are The Deer Hunter, Reckless and All The Right Moves.

The training base was on Lake Michigan and imagine 500 tons or so of steel submerged in ice water! Well, my twitter blew up overnight.

A subset of #metoo is the #churchtoo hashtag, started by Hannah Paasch and Emily Joy. Well, a bunch of white guys in power in Evangelicalism did this, inviting a bunch of women who support the white male evangelical power structure to talk about #metoo and #churchtoo at a conference.

And that’s right, they didn’t invite the two women who invented the hashtag, because those two women are Exvangelicals.

Then I tossed an off-the cuff remark which kind of exploded:

Which led to this guy commenting and then to Beth Moore (one of the women shilling for the men, sorry Beth, but you’re a complementarian, you’re not helping women) saying this:

Leading a friend of mine to tartly ask the original question:

I am amused, because the guy who started this, Ed Stetzer, has blocked me and Hannah and Emily Joy on Twitter and now his little conference is blowing up in his face. *smirk*

They have much bigger issues than a person making a bad joke about “the body of Christ”.

Truthfully, I can’t believe you even said that considering the huge pedophilia and sex abuse scandals in the church. Also keeping women out of the service and how they treat women’s issues like birth control has been a big problem.

Canvassing works. My FiL, a Trump voter, read the material a canvasser brought him, and he’s going to vote for Amy McGrath for Congress. I’m canvassing Sunday and Monday for her.

I rarely take offense, but this is insulting. No priest would say that the host is actually Christ’s body. It’s a matter of faith.

Well, I can only go by what the Catholic Church itself says.

vatican.va (Catechism of the Catholic Church, from the Holy See)
usccb.org (US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Liturgy of the Eucharist, scroll down to the section Communion Rite)
vatican.va (Catechism of the Catholic Church on the nature of the Eucharist and its worship)

Some Lutheran and Anglican churches hold a different position (cosubstantiation) that the body and blood comingle with the bread and wine. Transubstantiation holds the bread and wine are wholly converted (the Catholic and Orthodox position), while other Protestant faiths hold it is a memorial.

To an atheist, it’s just bread and wine. Hence the joke.

I know too much about how to search Christian sources for their own beliefs. That said, perhaps in retrospect, I shouldn’t have posted the joke from Twitter.

You always have to be careful what you say for fear of offending someone. Since pretty much everyone here knows I am an atheist, I’ll take a break away from here.

The nation’s laws (for now) have no religious tests, but society sure does (I’m offended being one of the ways to shame people into being quiet.)

I guess I won’t pull out a priest, a rabbi, and a Baptist walk into a bar joke.

All those extra people can’t be showing up to vote for Ted Cruz, can they?

Ted Cruz won because he capitalized on how awful his opponents were (and they were), I am not seeing how he has cast Beto in that same light.

The Texas Senate polls have tightened. Texas is one of the seats which could deliver a Senate majority to the Democrats if they pull off the upset.

Some Lutheran and Anglican churches hold a different position (consubstantiation) that the body and blood comingle with the bread and wine.

You don’t need to take a break. It really is a non-issue. It was a bad joke nothing more and there really should be no reason anyone would be offended unless they just want to be. There is absolutely no intention in the joke to offend.

To take the “joke” seriously and be offended at it while there are huge elephants in the room is totally out of any sense of proportion. To say a bad joke hurts the church in light of the huge real issues that stymies their growth is ridiculous.

I didn’t want to get into a religious argument, so apropos of nothing, a random historical observation: Many, many thousands of people have been burned for denying the “real presence” of the actual, physical body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

Again, just a random observation….

a pleasant and unsuspected statistic popped up in my running log today

i use a rolling 7 day window and a rolling 30 day window to track my running trends

the 7 day lookback window for each day of the last 2 weeks says i ran about 65 miles for the previous 7 days (i thought i was in the 50’s)

the 30 day windows say i ran 251 miles in the last 30.

Is saying the Catholic Church has issues that really prevent it’s growth that have nothing to do with actual religion, like criminal activity protected by an organization really a religious discussion?

Part of the problem the Catholic Church has is it protects itself by hiding under “religion” while some in the organization take part in civil crimes.

When the Pennsylvanian Attorney General has a grand jury studying a pattern of abuse it is no longer religious.

I was not discussing religion. It really is more about politics and public laws.

And this blog talks about politics and religion all the time.

We’re likely to be in for a shitstorm in any event even if the Dems only take one House: the Orange Anus’s notions of electoral probity are well-documented (remember in 2016 when he pronounced that the only “fair election” was one that he won? And it was dismissed as just another Trumpian “witticism”, though the chilling part is he probably actually believes that).

Despite the ton of temporizing that’s been done, the 2018 midterms are going to be taken as a referendum on Donald Trump and his Presidency. And given that said “President” is an incompetent, unstable sociopath; him having to “govern” with what he will most-likely denounce as a “Fake Congress” isn’t all that pleasant a prospect.

I just wish Beto’s numbers were going to the rest of the ticket. If everyone voting for Beto also voted for the rest of the Democratic ticket, we could get rid of Abbott, Dan Patrick, Ken Paxton, and Sid Miller easy as pie.

By the way, I haven’t taken the time enough yet to bitch about how corrupt the local GOP is here in my neck of the woods. I present one Scott Taylor, a man who could have won reelection without breaking a sweat, yet felt himself so vulnerable that he had campaign staff go out and collect signatures for a third party candidate to appear on the ballot. But not only did they collect signatures, they also submitted fake ones as well as ones from dead voters. And then, for the topper on this shit cake, he spent weeks insisting that he had no part in the whole mess and his staffers were acting on their own…then submitted campaign spending records showing he was still paying them after he fired them and was paying for their legal counsel out of campaign funds.

Oh, and I should also mention the independent candidate he worked to get on the ballot? Yeah, she’s currently on trial for defrauding the federal gov’t for a charity program.

And he’s still going to win Tuesday, despite a special prosecutor looking into his campaign.
