Johnson was impeached for faithfully carrying out Lincoln’s intentions to go easy on the Southern states to reconcile them to their reincorporation into the Union. If Lincoln had lived, the Ultras in the Republican party probably wouldn’t have impeached him, but his historical image would have suffered considerably.

And in hindsight, we’ve learnt that the Ultras should have won that fight. Whether Lincoln lived or not, Jim Crow was going to go live within 10 years of war’s end unless we strung up every last officer of the CSA military and any volunteer enlisted men as well.

Donald J. Trump ✔
@realDonaldTrump
Landing in Montana now - at least everybody admits that my lines and crowds are far bigger than Barack Obama’s…

“At least” is an admittance you have nothing going as far as helping your candidates in the election…and all you have is your same base kissing your butt at live rallies.

Not your usual bluster from Donny. He may already be setting up his excuses.

“Well, the Republicans, which I am not really, lost the House in the midterm elections. But my base still enjoys coming to my rallies. So, it isn’t my fault. I’m still loved. It’s those bad candidates Paul Ryan put up that got beat. I guess we know why he is retiring from Congress. He is weak and ineffective. Not like Trump.”

re: #6 HappyWarrior

Trump will be Andrew Johnson to Obama’s Abe Lincoln. One iconic, the other remembered as an Ignorant failure.

This reminds me of something I recently read: the late Stephen Ambrose’s 1975 dual bio of Custer and Crazy Horse. In 1866, Andrew Johnson had invited Custer along on a campaign tour trying to gin up support for Johnson’s “party”* in the midterm elections. Old Andy generally acted a lot like you-know-who on the stump: angrily pushing white-supremacist/Confederate-coddling policies wherever he went, and generally generating such ill-will in the North that the Republicans swept into power in a landslide (and would eventually politically neuter - and impeach. - Johnson). Hopefully this might be a repeat a repeatable phenomenon.
PS: Johnson’s fail soured Custer on politics: he avoided them for a decade- until he got convinced that a big victory over the Sioux would get him a national base…

*nominally a “fusion” party, but in practicality, Democrats

You get into answering something in a thread that has been going for awhile, maybe take off for a bit, come back to see more comments to yours or other stuff you want to comment on…but as you slave away the thread changes and there you are. That’s true. It all matters. But it’s also like saying that on the one hand there’s the president of the United States of America spreading anti-Semitic garbage and on the other is this guy named Farrakhan that almost dozens of people listen to.

the only thing bill buckley ever said that i agree with. talking about “the CIA and the KGB engaging in similar practices” and now it fits both siderism to a T:

it is the equivalent of saying that the man who pushes an old lady into the path of a hurtling bus is not to be distinguished from the man who pushes an old lady out of the path of a hurtling bus: on the grounds that, after all, in both cases someone is pushing old ladies around.

For the first year of his presidency, he was averaging about five lies a day, and in the second year that slowly crept up to about 7.5 a day. In October, though, his average jumped to a staggering 35.6 lies a day, including one day (October 22, the day of the Ted Cruz rally) where he issued forth with an amazing 83 whoppers. To squeeze that many in, you pretty much have to lie about everything.

From the last thread, that Jacob Collier track is amazing! The only song I can think of in a similar context is the Japanese artist Cornelius, and his track “God Only Knows”, which not only references The Beach Boys, but also East KIlbride’s best, the Jesus and Mary Chain- in particular, their song: “Just Like Honey”- in a single song which also wraps it up in Cornelius’ singular style.

It appears that way. He’s definitely trying to inflame public opinion against caravan members.

But is that strategy working?

It’s clear Trump is hoping for video of soldiers shooting Caravan members.

That would be one hell of a shot given the caravan will still be 1000 miles away on election day.

Farrakhan is a religious extremist (and nut) and is not of the left. He’d probably think it was outrageous to be linked to the left since it supports equal rights for LGBT and women. We don’t have to universally condemn him since he is not one of our own. I have yet to hear of even one Democratic politician pandering to Farrakhan or seeking his endorsement.

max boot re trump’s racist closing message:

….he is not running the midterm campaign based on his supposed achievements. Instead, Trump and his fellow Republicans are closing the election with the most naked appeal to racial prejudice since the dark days of Jim Crow …

What is shocking, if no longer entirely surprising, is that the Republican Party would so readily follow him into the gutter. The prominent Republicans denouncing his hate-mongering are mostly those such as Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ.), Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) and Gov. John Kasich (R) who are not seeking reelection. The rest of the GOP is complicit in this disgraceful demagoguery. Republicans who do not denounce Trump’s racist tactics — and even imitate them — will never escape the stench of this year’s campaign as long as they live.”

Last night was my last post-work ride of the year. Next week, the sun will set below the Santa Cruz Mountains before 5. The weather was perfect - 75 degrees, light or no winds. Felt strong and fast, and according to Strava I posted 3 Personal Bests, on a road I ride all the time. Not bad for an old fat guy on the cusp of 61!

The sun was JUST setting behind the hill when I got back to the car. By the time I’d shucked gloves, helmet, and shoes, it had completely set.

I took a panorama of Canada Road.

Moving objects in panorama mode can get… distorted….

Oh, I meant when it finally gets here.

Have you seen some of the military preparation studies that were released last week? I guess someone associated with the studies decided to release them to the media to show how ridiculous it all is.

Even the military is admitting there will be few of the caravan left by the time it makes it to the border of America. I think one of the reports said maybe 400 or so make it that far.

Plus the number has already dwindled the farther they go. I guess some people decide to stay along the way.

I don’t know the previous times this has happened but it sounds like these caravans are not all that new, have happened in the past and the military was basing their response on what they know historically.

I am wondering if the military went along with it to keep the man-baby happy and have turned it into a bit of a practice mission.

Thought of this driving into Fort Worth this morning.

Old man joke:

An old man in a Volvo is driving home from work when his wife rings him on his cell phone.
“Honey,” she says in a worried voice, “be careful. There was a bit on the news just now, some lunatic is driving the wrong way down the freeway.”
“It’s much worse than that,” he replies, “there are hundreds of them!”

Good dad joke. My son enjoyed me telling it.

Having been in the Army, I can say that any field exercise is conducted with such gear on. You have to be used to wearing it under all circumstances. And yes, it sucks but no, it’s not new. At least they aren’t having to wear gas masks and MOPP gear like in the bad old days in Germany where the first Soviet attack was likely to be SCUDs of VX and the like. A pot & armor isn’t as bad as somethings. I am curious if the expensive and heavy plates are in the carriers or if they fake it on FTX here in country.

My usual field exercise gear consisted of Helmet, gas mask, MOPP gear, web belt and shoulder straps (with canteen, butt pack, 2 mag pouches & first aid pouch) holster & pistol (no ammo unless on guard duty) or rifle depending on job. These all had to be with you at all times.
