John Oliver on Donald Trump’s Inhuman, Blatantly Racist Family Separation Policy [VIDEO]

John Oliver’s latest is a scathing indictment of Trump’s vile family separation policy. Vote Democratic and help stop this insanity.

John Oliver discusses the disturbing policy that separated migrant families detained at our southern border, and the disturbingly real chance that it could happen again.

This subject is why I fucking hate the “Just vote” memes that are going around.

i know I’m splitting hairs, but “Just vote”, translates to me as “It’s doesn’t matter who you vote for, just get out and do it.”

That’s not the problem. The problem is getting people to recognize that the party in power, the Republicans, are responsible for shit like making child abduction US policy.

Fuck “Just vote”. It should be “Vote Democratic”, because the last time I checked, most Democrats are against things like kidnapping children.

i posted this the other day wrt why young people say they arent voting
the sentiment still applies more generally, though i wont edit the language:

- id rather lose my health insurance than google “stamps.com
- id rather lose access to abortion than take the time to register to vote and check my status periodically
- im ok with the government separating kids from their parents, putting them in “cages” because learning about candidates takes time
- id rather the two parties continue to do things that dont represent me and my ideals. why should i get involved to try and tell them how i feel?

yes, being a citizen takes some time.
staying informed takes a little planning and time. (tv ads and mailers are the worst place to get accurate information no matter who they’re from).

actual voting does take a little time - less if you can mail it in (oh that stamp thing again)

yeah. people actually said these things and i dont think these are the real reasons.
if you can manager twitter, facebook, snapchat, instagram and 3 other apps simultaneously for 8 or more hours a day, you can google “where do i get stamps” or “what’s a postmark” early enough in the process.

We needed a stamp in Washington up until the primary this year. When Oregon started mail-in voting, their ballots were postpaid, but the Republicans sued, calling it “buying votes”. WA didn’t want to repeat their experience. I don’t know what suddenly changed.

It’s a noble sentiment, and one I would have largely shared until 2016. But it’s no longer a Center-Right party against a Center-Left party, is it? It’s not a contest between two largely similar visions of America. It’s a contest between a vision that defines “America” as an ideal, where all who follow that ideal are welcome, and one that defines “America” as a white, Christian nation that works to exclude the nonwhite and nonChristian, that pursues whatever means it can get away with to disenfranchise the nonwhite nonChristian, and which turns its back on its fellow democracies in favor of dictatorships.

You vote for the latter vision, I’m not sure I CAN be your friend.

re: #39 KGxvi

Of course it’s a poll tax. So is having to drive or take a bus or whatever to a polling place, possibly taking time off work, too.

Of course, the biggest poll tax is being able to at least afford rent so you have a mailing address to register from. The Native Americans in North Dakota are an example everybody’s familiar with, but there are millions of people who are either homeless or not exactly homeless, but moving from couch to couch.

Then there’s the poll tax of having to get a driver’s license or ID card (or passport!)….

Bush dropped under 40% in 2006, low of 31% in May, rebounded to the mid-40s or so in the summer, dropped to 33% at the mid-terms. Never got back above 40% after that, and dropped below 30% a couple of times in 2008 when the economy started going bad.

Generally it’s in Dem’s favor because Republicans are more likely to show up for midterm elections, so a low turnout electorate is more Republican than the population generally. And the people who DON’T vote in midterms tend to be more Democratic than the population generally. So if turnout is high, it tends to favor Democrats.

Not always, but generally. We Dems tend to be too easily demotivated by things not being perfect, hence low turnout in 2010 and 2014. I guess we’ll find out if white hot fucking rage is a big enough motivator this year…

This is a particularly stupid argument, even considering it’s coming from Republicans. Why would the State paying postage be “buying votes”? The envelopes can contain GOP votes as well as Dem ones.

I wish my State (NY) would postpay mail (“absentee”) ballots: the ones here are in oversize, overweight envelopes that need the extra “ounce” postage (I don’t even recall what that is, I just stick two “Forevers” on it).

a comment on maintaining your sanity and mental health tomorrow:
(about the election night coverage, not the results)

dont buy into election day news coverage being all that important
especially television coverage

i mean, watch if you want, if you can tolerate it, and keep it in perspective.

- sure, there will be the usual stories about confusion, suppression, intimidation etc
- counts may take time and there’s a good chance of some runoffs
- not all races will be decided tomorrow

most important is that tomorrow’s ‘horse race’ coverage is entirely random and a function of *timing only*

what precincts report when.
who’s had trouble with their machinery or tabulating the totals.
other glitches that cause delays

sure they can predict and prognosticate and even turn out to be right in, oh my, just a couple hours before all the numbers are in and final results are known

it’s kind of meaningless hour by hour, minute by minute
it’s not done, and it doesn’t matter until they are (mostly) all reported and counted

so on this thing, relax.

Nope. Not sending or listening to voice texts. Unacceptable.

once or twice while driving i was texting in real time back and forth with my niece
i used the google voice to speak the texts….

then i realized there used to be a thing called a ‘phone call’

The iPhone lets you send short voice messages via text, slightly different than text message dictation.

Also, who uses their phone to make phone calls?

Maybe this dog isn’t like my brother’s dog. Maybe the chickens are perfectly safe. But I wouldn’t give good odds on that.

I used to have a neighbor with chickens. Brother’s dog put an end to that. Another neighbor had a goat. Brother’s dog ended that situation as well. Don’t lock your dog in a cage with things that can be dog food.

I said that exact thing to my grand-nephew, who had opined that his generation didn’t wear wrist watches because ‘I have this thing in my pocket that tells me the time’.

I think I simply pulled out the pocket watch I was carrying at that point. I also mentioned that people STARTED wearing wrist watches 100 years ago, so they didn’t have to bother pulling anything out of their pockets to find out what time it was.

Exactly.

Trains ran on the same track at different speeds in the same direction, or in opposite directions. “Train Orders” told the crews when and where they had to pull off into a siding to allow another train to pass.

Railroad watches, aka ‘standard watches’ had to run within 30 seconds/2 weeks. Each railroad had its own rules, though they largely overlapped, and a list of models they’d accept. Railroaders had to present their watch every week to an Inspector, who’d note the deviation from his standard clock, and they’d have to have them serviced on a regular basis by the same inspectors. And they were expressly forbidden from setting the time themselves!

Railroad watches were big business for watch companies, and the movement grades that were approved for railroad service had to be up to Chronometer standards. Turning out MILLIONS of highly accurate mechanical watches that were still within financial reach of working men* was an amazing feat, made possible only because the American watch industry was founded on the basis of mechanization.

*The railroaders who were require to carry standard watches were well paid for the time, but still were hourly workers.

And accuracy was even more crucial before 1883, when the US (finally) went on a Standard Time system. It’s hard to fathom a system where every town or city set it own “time” by a rough approximation of “high noon”: seasonally adjusted. OK if you don’t have any means of communication faster than a walking pace (or Pony Express for really quick comms): but even 19th-Century railroad speeds (40 mph for the “expresses”) pushed the time system too much for efficiency.

I’m still not sure that the logic really follows that high turn out is bad for Republicans. I mentioned the other day, going back to ‘68, there doesn’t seem to be much correlation between turn out and the outcome of presidential elections.

I’m just seeing this, so it may have already been explained. I’m not a math guy, so consider this in common man language…keep’n it simple as I can…which isn’t easy. Numbers people; go easy on me.

It’s the proportion of those that vote.

Generally Republican voters turn out much higher percentages of numbers in a given election. Let’s say 70% of their voters turn out most normal elections. Typically Democrats turn out somewhere around 35% of their voters.

But, the key is…Democrats also have a majority of numbers in the population. They just don’t get out to vote in non-presidential elections. Sometimes they don’t make it out in those either.

Now you have an election that has higher numbers involved. Where are those numbers coming from? From the voters that don’t usually vote which is that huge pool of Democrats.

Since the vote is always close in the range of 10 points, now you have more Democrats involved from a bigger pool of voters. Republicans also turn out more, but they are drawing on the last of their numbers.

Bigger turnout means now you have activated a larger percentage of Democrats from a majority of the citizens.

85% of Republicans voting can get beat by 65% of the Democrats and make all the difference in the results.

When noon was “When the sun is at the zenith”, there could be 12 sec. difference across a single city.

But there were those who opposed Standard Time because it was ‘against the laws of God’, and that we shouldn’t let the railroads tell us what time it was.

Hate sells.

Pure and simple.

He doesn’t have time for an upbeat message because at heart he’s a hateful little bitter man. He’s chasing after the votes of other angry bitter men, and saying things are great isn’t going to do it, but ginning up fear to 11ty that a few thousand migrants may make their way to the US and some of them may apply for asylum is enough to cause Trump to send thousands of troops to the border and claim an armed invasion is imminent.

His know nothing base believes it. We see it time and again; Trump picked his marks and knows they wont fact-check anything he says, and they don’t care. They are a party of racists and bigots - and those who aren’t themselves racists and bigots enable the rest of the party because they can’t/wont speak out because they know the base is, in fact, racist and bigoted to the core.

I know that’s the theory, but I’ve posted turnout and popular vote totals in presidential elections, and the “low turn out favors Republicans, high turnout favors Democrats” doesn’t really seem to hold up. (see comment re: #49 KGxvi). For example, 2012 had a lower turn out than 2004, yet Obama won by the same percentage that W did in those years.

And it’s actually kind of difficult to find mid-term turn out numbers. So it’s hard to compare, but it does appear that 2010 saw slightly higher turnout than 2006, and Dems won the popular vote in the House 52-44 in 2006 but lost by basically the same margin in 2010. Targeted turnout is probably more important in the mid-terms than overall turnout.

And accuracy was even more crucial before 1883, when the US (finally) went on a Standard Time system. It’s hard to fathom a system where every town or city set it own “time” by a rough approximation of “high noon”: seasonally adjusted. OK if you don’t have any means of communication faster than a walking pace (or Pony Express for really quick comms): but even 19th-Century railroad speeds (40 mph for the “expresses”) pushed the time system too much for efficiency.

re: #126 ObserverArt

85% of Republicans voting can get beat by 65% of the Democrats and make all the difference in the results.

well done.

in summary, more people like Democratic positions
if only they’d all vote all the time…

They are a party of racists and bigots - and those who aren’t themselves racists and bigots enable the rest of the party because they can’t/wont speak out because they know the base is, in fact, racist and bigoted to the core.

further, the ‘upbeat’ messages are losers:
- the economy - all you need is a chart back to 2008
- the tax cut - everyone now knows where the money went, and didnt trickle…
- kavanaugh - nope, not gonna change one mind about who to vote for
- north korea? what’s that all about?
- helsinki? hell no

the r’s arent running on any of their ‘accomplishments’, so what’s left?

I use a landline that’s bundled with my tv & internet, email and twitter for everything else. You ain’t seen dirt, grease, and grime till you’ve seen the engineer of a coal-fired steam locomotive after a shift! That’s why most railroad watches had screw-off back and bezel, instead of hinged - keeps the crap out of the works.

re: #133 KGxvi

I know that’s the theory, but I’ve posted turnout and popular vote totals in presidential elections, and the “low turn out favors Republicans, high turnout favors Democrats” doesn’t really seem to hold up. (see comment ).

I think this is a new thing election. All indications are this turnout could equal a presidential election.

And again with my example…the numbers simply favor the Democrats not only by numbers, but by the passions for this one election influencing those numbers.

All the past numbers are correct and they reflect what you show, but those are what I would consider America’s typical ‘past’ voting trends.

This election is looking like it may be the hoped for “future’ election trend, at least maybe for one generation. There are huge new voters. and the youth vote does appear to be up especially in urban areas. More people of color also joining in.

Bigger independent numbers, many leaving the Trumpublicans add in too. Chances are good they will be motivated just because they were motivated to tell the Republicans to piss off. They want to send a message.

Those new independents erode the Republican numbers and fortify the Democrats. That is new too, and it is somewhat aimed at ALL Republicans all over these many races all due to one bad president.

Good in theory, but in practice, the numbers just don’t bear it out.

Again, here’s the presidential numbers, going back to ‘68, ranked by turnout and who won the popular vote:

1968 (61%) Nixon; 2008 (58.2%) Obama; 2004 (56.7%) GW Bush; 2016 (55.7) Clinton; 1972 (55%) Nixon; 1992 (55%) Clinton; 2012 (54.9%) Obama; 1976 (53.5%) Carter; 1984 (53.3%) Reagan; 1980 (52.6%) Reagan; 2000 (51%) Gore; 1988 (50%) GHW Bush; 1996 (49%) Clinton.

In the House, for midterms it’s not much different:
year/turnout/R-D results
2014 (36.7) 51-45.5
2010 (41) 52-45
2006 (40) 44-52
2002 (39.5) 50-45
1998 (38) 48-47
1994 (41) 52-45
1990 (38.4) 44-52
1986 (38) 44-54
1982 (42) 43-55
1978 (39) 45-54
1974 (39) 41-57.5
1970 (47) 45-53.6

I’m not seeing much correlation there, either. Turn out matters, of course. But I don’t think we can really draw a straight line between higher turn out and good results for Democrats.

The fabled “realignment election”. You may be right. And it may well turn out that 2016 was an anomaly after all. I am tending toward the view that 2008 was a realignment election - and that may have been something that hurt Hillary Clinton in 2016, because (assuming there was a realignment) she was very much a product of the old alignment. But we can’t know for sure until well after the votes are cast.

Also, all the faint praise I had for the Orange County Register for actually endorsing Democrats in statewide offices is hereby revoked, repealed, and annulled:

In addition to his fiscally conservative leanings, Rohrabacher has been an important figure in protecting medical marijuana laws across the country from federal interference. He has also been a reliable supporter of civil asset forfeiture reform and earlier this year broke ranks from most of his party in support of mass surveillance protections.

Alas, Rohrabacher has a tendency to say wildly inappropriate things and support policies out of step with a limited government approach. From saying property owners should be able to refuse to sell their homes to gay people to suggesting students should be armed, Rohrabacher’s off-the-cuff remarks often undermine confidence in him.

Additionally, while there has yet to be any substantiated evidence of wrongdoing, his apparent affinity for Vladimir Putin is cause for concern.

In light of these concerns, our editorial board has taken seriously the candidacy of businessman Harley Rouda.

While casting himself as a Democrat who puts country over party, Rouda unfortunately struggled in a meeting with our editorial board to articulate what he means by that, offering only his support of greater border security as backing for his claim. Though the district could benefit from a true centrist, Rouda is not that person.

Interesting discussions with the village clerk and the postmistress on voting in the past here in town. (I had to take water samples for the state, one of which is required to go by overnight mail, so that set the village back $78 for postage.)

Both of them noted they really don’t like mail voting; they prefer when we had a polling station in the village.

The American Legion Auxiliary and the Fire Department Auxiliary would throw a big “meet and greet” and a big dinner for everyone who came out to vote.

Mail voting was adopted before I moved here, so I never saw any of that.

On the local non-scientific polling front, several people at the Post Office today said they voted for me. (Yay)

It is depressing to look at FiveThirtyEight and see we’re still the most conservative house district in the nation, with a greater than 99% chance of the district remaining in my Republican representative’s hands, even though he did no campaigning (and his opponent appeared across the state).

So I won’t be cheering for my own house district, but will be looking forward to those folk in Eastern Time ousting Dave Brat or Andy Barr.

re: #189 fern01

I just went to their site before reading your comment. They have the generic congressional ballot “all tied up” and an article on the silent red wave. Trump’s approval at 50% (next best at 538 is 41%)

I assume they do it to depress democrats into not voting.

I’m not sure why they do it, but I do see one noticeable flaw in their methodology:

All Rasmussen Reports’ survey questions are digitally recorded and fed to a calling program that determines question order, branching options, and other factors. Calls are placed to randomly-selected phone numbers through a process that ensures appropriate geographic representation. Typically, calls are placed from 5 pm to 9 pm local time during the week. Saturday calls are made from 11 am to 6 pm local time and Sunday calls from 1 pm to 9 pm local time.

To reach those who have abandoned traditional landline telephones, Rasmussen Reports uses an online survey tool to interview randomly selected participants from a demographically diverse panel.

After the surveys are completed, the raw data is processed through a weighting program to ensure that the sample reflects the overall population in terms of age, race, gender, political party, and other factors. The processing step is required because different segments of the population answer the phone in different ways. For example, women answer the phone more than men, older people are home more and answer more than younger people, and rural residents typically answer the phone more frequently than urban residents.

I think most other polls have started including cellphones in their calling. There’s also a question of how they weigh the results that they do get.

I contend this. Trump has a lower ceiling than presidents like Obama, Bush, or Clinton but he has a higher ceiling since his core supporters will support him no matter what.

Floor?

Yeah, this. Trump’s “Strong Disapproval” rating is very high, >50% in some polls, and there’s not really anything HE could do* to change those minds, in much the same way that the 35% floor is unbreakable.

*Any other President could probably change that, but not Trump. It’s not within his capability.

I am invited to an election party sponsored by the candidate I worked for (very part time) but I share that apprehension. During the Virginia races last year, I chastised a friend who was texting me early results because (1) they tend to be worthless and (2) I am way too superstitious to want to hear them come in live. So haven’t decided yet whether I can bring myself to watch tomorrow — especially after the November 2016 fiasco.

The thing you have to realize about Virginia is our conservative areas come in first. That’s why I always take a deep breath. I think we’ll know that Kaine will have defeated Stewart pretty early on tomorrow though. Wexton and the other Dems running for the House though I’m not sure. I actually feel the best about my disrict of the ones being challenged since we went for Clinton by 10 points and I don’t think Comstock has distanced herself enough from Trump who is unpopular here.

I think the ultimate floor for any president is probably somewhere around 25%. There will always be devout partisans on each side that will back their guy no matter what. The ultimate ceiling is probably around 90%, that’s where GW Bush ended up after 9/11.

I’m in hopes that a lot of younger people (especially) who haven’t been voting because “My vote doesn’t make any difference” may get out and vote this time because they’re mad as hell and just can’t take it any more. Then when they see their vote actually make a difference, they’ll keep doing it.

It’s one of the things I don’t get about Millenial (Gen Y) bashing. The earliest Millenials are already near forty (starting at 1980 for a point). Millenials at the older end of the cohort are already approaching middle age, have jobs or children (or both), crushing college debts thanks to GOP policies put in place starting with Reagan, &c.

Even the oldest of Gen Z is now old enough to vote.

Of those groups most likely to vote, the Greatest Generation is nearly gone, the Silent Generation (including my mother) is almost gone, and Baby Boomers on the old end are also disappearing rapidly. (I’m on the young end.)

How people vote early in their life pretty much determines how they vote all their life, and if Gens X-Z are learning just how crappy GOP policies have been since before they were born, rigging the game so they can never get ahead, most will align lifelong away from the GOP.

Maybe this election won’t be the one to make a difference (but the early numbers sure look like it is), but it won’t be too much longer.

Bush I had the biggest swings. The extreme highs of being the toast of the world from how he handled Desert Storm and he does deserve credit for that since he showed the importance of coalition building but the lows of the economic troubles which really wasn’t his fault. I actually think he’s the best Republican President since Ike left that served a full term. His administration was more or less ethical, decent on FP, and had some good domestic achievements too. Not a total swing and a miss on SCOTUS either since while we got Thomas, we also got Souter.

Speaking as one, what pisses me off are the people who give my generation shit for “not understanding capitalism.” We understand capitalism just fine thanks. We just don’t like that we’ve been given a totally different version of the one that allowed our grandparents to attend college when college was a gateway to a middle class lifestyle and allowed our parents to pretty much enter the employment market with a BA or BS without having to do so many tedious unpaid internships and I’ve only had avocado toast a handful times thanks and I usually have made my own.

If the Democrats win big in 2018, I think 2020 will look a lot like the best of the Clinton/ Obama majorities- scrapping voter suppression laws will boost the Democrats in the South Atlantic and southwestern states (maybe even Texas, but I doubt it and the Democrats shouldn’t need it), but the interior South, Plains states and northern Rockies are gone absent divine intervention.

IIRC, Foxconn never *promised* to create “13,000 jobs” - that figure was (again IIRC) the one Walker and the GOP liked to throw around to try to cover up the unconscionable giveaway they bribed the Chinese with to set up their plant in WI (vs., who knows? Malaysia?). But I think those “promises” were not particularly enforceable - vs. the cash advances Foxconn insisted on.

In the House, for midterms it’s not much different:
year/turnout/R-D results
2014 (36.7) 51-45.5
2010 (41) 52-45
2006 (40) 44-52
2002 (39.5) 50-45
1998 (38) 48-47
1994 (41) 52-45
1990 (38.4) 44-52
1986 (38) 44-54
1982 (42) 43-55
1978 (39) 45-54
1974 (39) 41-57.5
1970 (47) 45-53.6

I’m not seeing much correlation there, either. Turn out matters, of course. But I don’t think we can really draw a straight line between higher turn out and good results for Democrats.

Looking at the house midterm totals, it seems the main decider (with maybe one exception) is - the vote goes against the party of the president. I’m happy with that.

1976 is the only election since ‘68 where the incumbent lost without a third party candidate getting a significant vote total. That’s why I picked it originally. It was also a screwy year because Agnew and Nixon resigned so Ford was an incumbent but not in the traditional sense of having been on the ticket the prior cycle.

I’m not sure she’d be successful in softcore porn, because she’s not that hot. 15 minutes would be the length of her career there.

Other than managing to get publicity through outrageous actions, does she have have any real job skills? My guess is her media persona might interfere in getting her access to standard openings in corporate America.

re: #224 HappyWarrior

Speaking as one, what pisses me off are the people who give my generation shit for “not understanding capitalism.” We understand capitalism just fine thanks. We just don’t like that we’ve been given a totally different version of the one that allowed our grandparents to attend college when college was a gateway to a middle class lifestyle and allowed our parents to pretty much enter the employment market with a BA or BS without having to do so many tedious unpaid internships and I’ve only had avocado toast a handful times thanks and I usually have made my own.

This. You are exactly right. Deregulation has taken the reasonable controls that limited markets into an economic system that privatizes profits and socializes the cost. From college loans to feeding the armed services, it’s a free for all for for-profit companies.

When I was in the AF in the late 70’s-early 80’s, AF personnel cooked and served our food when we were on alert. By the time Iraq II rolled around, it was all outsourced to corporations who hired out to foreigners, paid them shit, and reaped huge profits.

It’s a mug’s game, and we pay for it.

He’ll probably go down in flames no matter what. Nobody has challenged a sitting president for his party’s nomination in the modern primary era and actually won. I personally don’t care what Bristol does with her body before marriage. It’s none of my business. However, when you’ve got people like Mike Huckabee, one of her mother’s political allies going on the air trashing Natalie Portman who had a much more stable relationship with her child’s father, they in fact are now married while also saying that we should respect Bristol’s privacy, that ticks me off.

For her to just trash it like that and her whole smug attitude is just obnoxious as is her whole claim to fame. You can’t tell me that if she were a black girl or especially a black male and she posed with guns the way she does that the conservatives who applaud her would find it okay. As someone who has had family members suffer with addiction, I admire the hell out of the fact that Betty was candid with the public about her struggles. re: #314 HappyWarrior

Regarding KSU gun girl, she rubs me the wrong way because she went to NYC, a city that although I don’t or have not lived there has a special place for me since I visit frequently and I have cousins from there. For her to just trash it like that and her whole smug attitude is just obnoxious as is her whole claim to fame. You can’t tell me that if she were a black girl or especially a black male and she posed with guns the way she does that the conservatives who applaud her would find it okay. And that really is the crux of what gets me about gun nuts like her, Dana Loesch, and others.

She strikes me as someone inauthentic. She latches on to the most common conservative bugaboos — NYV is filthy, gun control is bad — and then tries to make bank on them. It all seems forced and insincere. She probably had a great time in NYC, because why else would she go there? The negative tweets were just to get clicks and follows. Ditto the open carry nonsense at Kent State, who told her, “Girl, you graduated. Get off the campus,” and she makes it into infringement of her 2nd Amendment rights.

Grasping at straws, she is.

Tomi Lahren will find this out eventually too as will Laura Loomer. It’s honestly pretty sad that there seems to be a cottage industry of this.

King added that perhaps “Kagan and Sotomayor will elope to Cuba,” referring to President Barack Obama’s two Supreme Court appointments.

That’s pretty sweet. The Fords seemed and seem like a nice family. As someone who has had family members suffer with addiction, I admire the hell out of the fact that Betty was candid with the public about her struggles. She did NOT have to do that but she humanized it by showing that alcoholism and drug addiction is something that can impact anyone regardless of status. Plus I think Jerry really respected Betty as his equal in a way that few Presidents have their wives.

I was impressed when Betty Ford came out and made that admission, and moreover, worked afterward to deal with addictions in others after the Fords were out of the White House.

Obama’s Commerce Secretary John Bryson and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts both have epilepsy though, and neither will talk about it other than to say they have it.

It’s estimated 3.7 million people in the USA have epilepsy (almost twice my state’s population). Both men are in positions to bring attention to the issue.

I get it is their right to be private about that, but it still leaves those of us out here who aren’t in high government positions dealing with questions like “is it safe for you to go outside” or “can you work.”

She said on her very short show on MSNBC that though she’s an atheist, she “would never vote for one, because she can’t vote for someone who believes in nothing” (one of the most common Christian apologia fails out there). Mostly because she didn’t give herself enough credit. She should have told Sanders that he’d be treated with respect like other defeated candidates, but she instead allowed him to write much of the party platform and to eliminate superdelegates’ first-ballot votes because they didn’t endorse him (because they knew he wasn’t fit for the White House).

The Democrats need to affirm themselves to a liberal, pragmatic set of policies without veering into “socialism.” No “Fight for 15” where that would cost jobs (which is almost everywhere outside a few cities with very high costs of living). No Emm Four Ay. No You Bee Eye.

SE Cupp quotes:

Feminism’s ultimate success is that we don’t need it anymore. (2011)

“Losing Our Religion: The Liberal Media’s Attack on Christianity.” (Title of one of her books, 2010, five reprints)

“I aspire to be a person of faith one day.” (C-Span, 2009)

Obama’s Nostalgia for the GOP of Yore is Hypocritical (column, Deseret News, Sept 16, 2018, full of the same boilerplate nonsense we’ve been hearing from conservatives since Obama announced he was running for President, with added honey for the Beehive State as a push for Mormons to vote for Romney in this election)

SE Cupp is really no different than any other Republican pundit, and condemning Trump in no way absolves her of helping his rise in the first place. Her schtick (such as it is) is she’s an atheist (who wants you to pray to God, thinks this should be a Christian state, &c), and she wears cool glasses like Rick Perry.

I don’t know how Farkahan has this image of being on the left. McCain in 2000 drew a false equivalency between him and Falwell/Robertson. Farrakahan never influenced the left the way Falwell and the religious right did the GOP. It was still an act of courage to go after the religious right though because no Republican has done it since then in the primaries for President.

Okay I’ll knock but what’s wrong with number 3? I’m agnostic myself. I don’t see anything wrong with someone who sees themselves as a skeptic wanting to have God or whatever proven to them. I’m happy agnostic myself but we all have our own spiritual journey. I think you’re overanalyzing what was said about her big time which was that she’s reasonable sane compared to Tomi Lahren. Less sharp than the little red radishes common in the USA. I’ve had daikon pickled and cooked, but never raw, though. They are crunchy (unless over cooked) and quite mild.

We need to remember that RWNJs are not monolithic. Some are fervently in the Trumpist camp, while others recognize conservatism does not require Donald Trump as a leader. Still others see Trump as detrimental to their cause, because sooner or later Trumpism is going to implode and take the GOP down with it. I have little in common with S.E. Cupp or Jonah Goldberg. I don’t agree with their politics or attitudes at all, and I may characterize their statements as clueless, dumb or wrong, but they have some ability to be rational at times. A rational person can see Trump as a danger to democracy, and even to anyone not fully in his camp. Trumpists don’t see it at all, and won’t see it unless they happen to get caught in Trumpism’s crosshairs.

Ah uhm, so my brother (picture earlier in this thread) had the police show up at the house after he told a vote canvasser asking for my mother to get off the property. Of course he called me and of course I couldn’t stop laughing. He wasn’t mad at me, he just wanted me to know about it.

I did explain to him that all these in person GOTV activities WORK. They get people to the polls. But it’s making him nuts and I completely understand. I was over there on Saturday and we were trying to watch a Godzilla movie. Holy crap, every 15 minutes, another phone call, recorded this, asking for mom that, etc. It was insane.

I can say this, the Arizona Democratic candidates are ON IT as far as GOTV is concerned, but not everyone cares about this like we do. So you get people like my brother, the registered Republican, who may or may not vote tomorrow, getting progressively more and more annoyed by people calling and showing up asking about our mom, the registered Democrat. I’m thinking there needs to be a reconsideration and maybe a consolidation of efforts, because they are pissing people off. (Oh, and road signs, can we talk about the visual clutter? Naaah, standard Trumpian bullshit: Democrats aren’t jumping up to finance Building The Fucking Wall on the border, and don’t believe in shooting down unarmed refugees for target practice, so it’s an affront to “sovereignty”, or whatever shit they want the rubes to believe (which of course, they will).

If one wanted to expand the concept a little, Administration hacks would probably gas on about the UN, or “disadvantageous” trade deals, or a “strong America” (i.e. international bully) - but that’s probably too sophisticated a concept for the usual Trump Nuremberg Rally: “Democrats want a horde of brown criminals to rob, rape and murder decent (i.e. white) citizens” is a catchier theme.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Nov 5, 2018 • 6:08:50pm

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)—in coordination with federal, state, local, and private sector partners nationwide—are continuing efforts to protect our elections. Today, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, DNI Dan Coats, and FBI Director Christopher Wray released the following joint statement:

Our agencies have been working in unprecedented ways to combat influence efforts and to support state and local officials in securing our elections, including efforts to harden election infrastructure against interference. Our goal is clear: ensure every vote is counted and counted correctly. At this time we have no indication of compromise of our nation’s election infrastructure that would prevent voting, change vote counts, or disrupt the ability to tally votes.

But Americans should be aware that foreign actors—and Russia in particular—continue to try to influence public sentiment and voter perceptions through actions intended to sow discord. They can do this by spreading false information about political processes and candidates, lying about their own interference activities, disseminating propaganda on social media, and through other tactics. The American public can mitigate these efforts by remaining informed, reporting suspicious activity, and being vigilant consumers of information, as discussed below.

The United States will not tolerate foreign interference in our elections from Russia, China, Iran, or other nations. As noted in a joint statement on October 19, 2018, such actions are a threat to our democracy, and identifying and preventing this interference is one of our highest priorities. On September 12, President Trump signed an executive order that makes clear the U.S. government will not hesitate to defend our electoral processes or punish those who attempt to undermine them.

Our agencies have been making preparations for nearly two years in advance of these elections and are closely engaged with officials on the ground to help them ensure the voting process is secure. Americans can rest assured that we will continue to stay focused on this mission long after polls have closed.

oh…

Not a lot of flavor—just a bit vegetal—but raw it has just a little bit of that horseradish aftertaste, but much less heat and sharpness, than a red or black radish. Cooked its bland and generally takes on whatever it’s seasoned with. I haven’t roasted one, but stir-fried and stewed in a curry, it just becomes a starch.

Indeed, I get the impression its used for texture as often as flavor. Raw it’s very crisp but not woody, and makes a good garnish (shredded daikon is a topping equivalent in Japanese food to thin slices of red radish in Mexican). Cooked high heat it stays crunchy but doesn’t brown up as fast starchier vegetables. Cooked slow in liquid it doesn’t fall apart but it becomes soft, sort of like a turnip.

It’s also pickled about a dozen different ways, such that it’s comparable to a cucumber it application as much as a potato.

So why the fuck are they going to the border? Oh wait, Trump is an insecure little man child who feels the need to look tough because he’s a chickenshit little coward who has never faced any real danger in his pathetic, little life.

Excellent! Thank you.

I’m thinking of slicing it on a mandolin and using it like scalloped potatoes.

Where did Breitbart get that picture? It’s odd, when I search for it, I do not find any actual news site carrying it.

If you look carefully at the lower right corner of the sign, the corner of the sign disappears into the hood of the car.

Daily Caller posted it at 2:16 PM Eastern … but I can’t find a time on the Deadbart article.

CBS in Atlanta has the photo, and an article about the blow up on social media, along with a statement from Ms. Abrams:

“Stacey Abrams should immediately denounce the Black Panthers and their hateful record of racism. She should stand against and condemn their attempts to intimidate hardworking Georgia voters just days before the election.” - Ryan Mahoney, Kemp for Governor

However, Abram’s camp responded, saying it’s Brian Kemp who “posed for pictures with supporters wearing racist, hate-filled shirts and refused to denounce them.”

I’ve really only cooked daikon in Asian dishes, so I cracked open Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian and he views them as interchangeable with red radishes, including doing things like roasting them with butter and glazing them. He also suggested turnip as the alternative if cooking.

Hope it turns out good.

Well, he got his Veterans Day military parade. I’ll bet all the military personnel sitting out in the desert (and all those who had to help prepare for this “mission”) are just thrilled with this.

The Armed Forces are already in trouble with recruiting and retention over Trump. I imagine this will do nothing to help.

It would almost look as if he was assisting a rival state, trying to weaken the US Military.

They are pictures from the New Black Panther Party-Atlanta Chapter’s FB page.
