Election Day Open Thread

Well, I must admit I’m a nervous wreck waiting to see whether America is going to make a course correction today and repudiate the ugly far right politics and blatant corruption of the Trump crime family. So here’s an open thread for the LGF community to keep up on news as it breaks, in the hope that it won’t be democracy that breaks instead.

I should really turn off my tv for the next two hours or so.

Right now they are talking about 270 votes from Shitlick County and I am trying to project that into national implications.

Not gonna turn it off though….

McGrath took a big step forward in Franklin County, KY, and is ahead almost 2-1 in a county Hillary narrowly lost. She’s now down by only 3% instead of 20%.

Is the Exit Poll at all meaningful?
Might he be telling us this now so that later when the blue wave fails to appear, we’ll all be EVEN MORE crushed?
Is he saying it now to warn his wingnut followers that the jig is up?
Did bd just make this all up and post it just to get me spinning?

Here’s a bit of happiness to keep me calm and break through the nail biting. In january I turn 40. The weekend I turn 40 I will be competing in my first powerlifting competition. I started prepping for the meet 6 weeks ago. This week I can confidently say my numbers are up and looking like I will hit some big numbers when I step on the platform. Current maxes:

Squat: 335lbs. (up from 325lbs. 6 weeks ago)
bench: 245lbs. (up from 235lbs. 6 weeks ago)
Deadlift: 450lbs. (this will be up even more but slowly increasing weight, goal is 500lbs).

I’m so cynical about Kemp it wouldn’t surprise me if he had his voter card messed up on purpose so he could claim he had issues. Who is going to stop him from voting? But he can talk on about the voting problems being equally problematic for everyone…so all results will stand no matter what.

“The Republicans have held the House for the last 20 of 24 years,” Watters explained. “You know, they only lost in 2006 as some of the scandals and the Iraq war was dragging on, but they got it back after Pelosi and Obama overreached.”

“Do you see right now — with no recession, no scandals, hot economy — do you see any reason substantively for Republicans to lose the House?” Watters asked.

“It was back to the scare tactics on Obamacare,” Ingraham said of the Democratic strategy. “That’s the one policy they really focused on. The separation of the kids at the border, I don’t think most people are going to vote on that.”

“I think most of the resistance voters out there are resisting the tone of Trump,” she continued. “They are resisting his personality. It’s like they are putting blinders on to all the great — there’s never a better time to be in America than today!”

According to Ingraham, “the left is so jacked to send a message to the president that, ‘Oh, no, we’re not going to be fooled again. We were embarrassed in 2016. We’re going to embarrass you now.’ It’s personal with the left.”

She added: “And Republicans are all about charts and numbers and G.D.P. — the art of the storytelling is sometimes lost on Republicans.”

I wonder if there are coroners who still use the “pay as you go” system, that is, deduct their fee from whatever cash is found on the victim.
The coroner’s report on Buddy Holly, for example, indicates that he was carrying $193.00 in cash, with $11.65 deducted for the coroner’s fee and $181.35 returned to the family.

I hate the early counts because most of us do not have the knowledge to know what they really portend. Who’s ahead ahead means nothing without context. And I don’t believe anything, even from experts, until at least 50% have been reported.

Hey, serious props to you! Good luck!

In KY we have constables, a poorly defined county law enforcement position, but it’s in the commonwealth’s constitution, so there.

We also have coroners…usually it’s a local undertaker.
There are training standards, but that gets ignored by some Kentucky coroners.

Also am hoping that in Georgia and other states where Republicans engaged in severe election shenanigans, the Democrats and the ACLU will legally challenge any Republican victory.

They’re not even random: They’re a completely different dynamic from Election Day results. The demographics of voting are incredibly complex, but one thing remains true: They change over time. Early results are going to be comprised of voters from a vastly different demographic from early-morning Election Day, from last-minute Election Day, from absentee. All of it amounts to one thing: You can’t extrapolate from any one of those data sets onto the aggregate. You have to wait for the whole damn thing to come in before you can definitively call something.

Polls close in NY/NJ shortly, (8pm EST), so we’ll get an avalanche of results soon.

So far, at first blush the House looks like it’s going to swing to the Democrats.

I’m going to be curious how the state legislature races go, since all politics is local, and the Democrats need to get a deep bench going, and it starts with winning those local races.

If the polling holds, Democrats should stand to pick up seats across the nation and make a dent in the GOP hold on state legislatures too. That’ll also start to put a dent in the state lawsuits/efforts to dismantle the safety net, abortion rights, birth control, civil/voting rights, and LGBTQ rights.

Just remember, folks: It’s very likely that we win, win big, in the house. We will undoubtedly lose some elections tonight that will upset us. We can’t let that detract us from our goal: Make them scared. Make them realize that elections do have consequences, and not always the ones that they want. Keep the momentum rolling so that if the Trumpocalypse keeps rolling over into 2020, we have more than enough firepower to send his ass back to Mar-a-Lago where some nice FBI agents will be waiting to arrest him.

Back from Scottsbluff. Unscientific polling (looking around at people with “I voted” stickers) indicates high voter turnout in Western Nebraska.

Polls close at 8PM CST/7PM MST here, so we have an hour to go.

Races which Democrats have a shot here are NE-2, small but non-zero chance to flip a Senate seat from Deb Fischer, Medicaid Expansion under the ACA.

Returns should start to come in shortly after 7PM my time; shortly thereafter I will find out if I won reëlection in my own race.

I did the same. I voted for two Republican judges that I play golf with and know personally. They’re both good men and good judges. Other than them, I told the Republican party to fuck off and voted Democrat on everything else. That includes a vote for Beto.

I didn’t care if they were “good men” or not. They belong to the party of the Klan and neo-Nazis. Where I couldn’t vote for someone else (unopposed elections) I left the line blank. That includes my county attorney, county clerk, and state senator, all of whom are “good people.”

The only exception I made to NO GOP was the other two incumbent members on my village board, to keep the Nazi-adjacent challenger on the ballot from winning. (Strategic voting was the only reason I voted for two Republicans.)

Well I just got home from voting. Even though I voted a straight D ticket at the State level I did vote R for a couple of city level individual. They have been in their respective positions for many years and for the most part, their positions are really non-partisan. County clerk and Coroner.

I have a childhood friend who was running for constable and had Kimmel endorse him as well. I was going to vote for him because it’s a non-partisan office, but decided at the last minute that I couldn’t vote for any Republican. Not until the party straightens out. He’s probably going to win, so good for him, but my vote went to no one for that office.

Florida Divisions of Elections

US Senate Race Scott by 0.82%

Trump activates prejudice — but doesn’t increase it

As I mentioned earlier, I just finished overseeing the thirteenth wave of a panel survey of American adults. And given President Trump’s use of racially charged rhetoric, you might expect that white Americans’ prejudice has risen since he won the presidency in late 2016. But in fact, the opposite is the case: self-reported prejudice is actually down among both white Democrats and white Republicans in the past two years.

The key to understanding the role of prejudice in contemporary politics is that Trump didn’t amplify it, he instead activated it: Trump’s rise led prejudice to be more integrated with voter choice. So prejudice has become more predictive of how white Americans vote, even if it’s also been on the decline.

So, after filling out my Manhattan, NYC, ballot by hand this morning, I walked over to the scanner and was informed by a very nice poll worker I know from my apartment building that the two scanners had conked out (not for the first or second time in the past eight years), and to drop it into the slot for manual counting later. Been there done that thank you very much.

After arriving home from my ritual post-election haircut, and assorted fruit shopping at our local Tuesday farmer’s market at City Hall Park, I tooled around the internets and came upon an article about how some folks in Brooklyn were too pissed off to vote after undergoing what sounded like the same terrible oh the humanity “ordeal” I’d found myself in not more than a half hour before.

Which leads me to conclude that 1) I need further information to properly access the difference between the situations in our respective boroughs, or 2) Brooklynites are wussies.

I hate to be a downer, but I’m almost more disheartened now than I was at this time of night 2 years ago—because now people KNOW what a total shitshow the yam’s “presidency” is—racist, anti-semitic, boorish, stupid, dishonest, criminal and everything else horrible that everyone here knew all along. And they just don’t fucking care. The more hateful the rhetoric, the more the assholes love it.

I just can’t fathom what has happened to this country, and I don’t know what we can do to save it.

I don’t feel that anything’s “happened” to this country, it’s just gotten a lot more comfortable revealing the ugliness that was always there. A lot of people are quite fine with the way things are going and want their side to keep winning. All the emotional and logic appeals can’t break through that mindset.

Ted Cruz is basically what would have happened to Mike Pence in 2016 if Trump hadn’t picked him out of the gutter. Indiana is red enough that he just might, barely, have squeaked out a win; maybe. But the odds were long enough that he jumped ship rather than try and find out.

I hear you. I’ve been divorced now for a year and a month. I didn’t expect it and now I’m paying for it, out the teeth for COBRA coverage that won’t last forever. That’s the only health care that actually provides any services for my premium.
