Know who’ll understand those tax returns?

Tax lawyers. CPAs. Forensic accountants.

People who unravel tax scams and tax fraud for a living.

That’s what Trump fears most.

When he claims that his prior year returns are under audit, that is highly suggestive that the IRS and NYC/NYS tax departments are looking at multiyear activities that may constitute tax fraud or evasion of tax.

Considering what we’ve seen around Trump’s foundation, evasion of tax and fraud are likely to pop up as he used shell companies to move money around to prevent an accurate accounting of taxes owed/due.

This is more like winning the miss congeniality title by a vote of 54 to 46 after the other person nominated:
1. Strangled a puppy
2. Ran around in blackface shouting “fuck you all” at the top of her lungs
3. Pulled a Tonya Harding on you just before the vote
4. Set the local orphanage on fire, then started clubbing the orphans who managed to escape while barking like a seal

CCJ knows a guy who knows a guy who invented the Doritos Locos Taco.

So, a Taco Bell story.

One of my students had to go to Los Angeles for work two years ago. She thought she’d try Taco Bell (why not) and she walked in and saw a sign advertising some chalupa.

Now, this confused her….you see, “chalupa” means “summer cottage” in Czech. So at first she was wondering why a taco-looking thingy was called a “summer cottage”.

Then she went to order it, as after all, she could tell everyone back here that she’d eaten a summer cottage while she was in the US. So she goes up to the counter and asks for a chalupa……only to find the young lad behind the counter couldn’t understand her, as that word is pronounced like haloopa in Czech. So she pointed to the sign and the young man said, “Oh, you want a chalupa (chaloopa)”.

So, after a bit of confusion, she got her chalupa. She enjoyed it. And afterwards, she discovered actual Mexican food, which she enjoyed even more (after getting over a little trepidation ordering food from a taco truck).

That’s hilarious. Speaking of neat cultural exchanges, I saw that a Slovak guy who runs a school in Kenya had the kids put on a nice show singing Kenyan and Czech/Slovak songs to celebrate the centennial of Czechoslovakia. Although Czech Republic and Slovakia broke up, I love that there isn’t animosity like there is in the Balkans between the former Yugoslav Republics.

Not to want to be too much of a downer on an otherwise sunny post-Election day, but the BIG cloud which will be shading the political landscape - for the next two years, at least - is going to be the Senate. With Mitch McConnell still running things in the Upper Chamber in what will no doubt be his usual iron-fisted manner. Which (given a Democrat-controlled House) is probably a wash at best regarding the worst of GOP legislation (i.e. all of it) - but Republican control of the Senate is going to mean that they will be able to proceed apace with their longterm project of packing every Federal Court and every government position they can with as dedicated a partisan hack ideologue as their “farm teams” can provide. And now, without (AFAICT) even the minimal margin of a few “moderate” or “maverick” Senators.

Trump may seem out of it (as usual) today - and I really wonder why he’s even bothering with a (rare) personal presser - but somebody who knows what’s what will probably be directing his wandering attention back to his typical path of destruction sooner or later…

So the Florida governor’s race still has a few ballots out it looks like, and the current margin is .6%. I know Gillum has conceded, but Florida has an automatic recount law… that’d be a helluva way for it to play out.

Broward Early voting count not completed

Broward, Duval, Palm Beach Mail-in ballots not completed.

Almost no county has completed Provisional ballots.

No county has completed overseas ballots, and won’t until at least 16 November (10 day grace period)

Florida Senate race appears headed to recount as Rick Scott’s lead over Bill Nelson narrows overnight. Just 30,239 votes separate the Republican Scott and Democrat Nelson on Wednesday morning.

Did Republican Rick Scott speak too soon when he declared victory in his U.S. Senate race last night?

Maybe.

Just 34,435 votes separated Gov. Scott and Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson on Wednesday morning, a difference of 0.42 percentage points. By early afternoon, the gap had narrowed again, to 30,239 as more ballots were counted.

That’s within the margin that could launch a recount.

Looking forward to the flood of House retirements (mostly GOP), but a few elderly House Dems in safe seats may retire to allow for a younger replacement. The Freedom Caucus just isn’t used to being in the minority. And in a Congress not bound by the Hastert Rule, they may find themselves even more sidelined. So why stay? In the old days of legislating, there was still pork you could hand out in exchange for a vote for something the majority wanted. Also looking ahead to 2020 with it’s even bigger electorate can’t be fun at all. It’s a pretty safe bet that the same people who came out this time will come out when its time to defeat Cheeto. Based on last night and looking at the 2020 Senate map, let’s assume worst case scenario and the GOP has 54 seats. These are the races that seem most worth investing in for the Dems:

Arizona, Montana, Colorado, Iowa (Ernst), Maine (Collins), North Carolina, South Carolina (Butters)

They’ll also have to defend Jones in Alabama.

And for shits and giggles: Cornyn is up in Texas and Capito is up in West Virginia; plus Cocaine Mitch as well.

In addition, the two Democratic women running for the state Board of Regents both won.

Democratic turn out was up 81% over 2014. The party ran 818 candidates, beating the all-time high of 550.

I like Acosta and godspeed to all of them for trying to do their actual jobs, but this time, he was pretty obnoxious. Sorry, Jim.

I’m not sure I’d call it obnoxious, but the question, while good in spirit, was poor in execution. It was a bit long-winded, and it had no hope of pinning Trump down on anything. He should have just led with “Are you concerned about forthcoming subpoenas?” and gone from there.

I agree. The execution was not good.

But with that said, Trump’s reaction was ridiculous. Demanding that Acosta’s mic be taken? And then the aide actually trying to physically remove it?!!? Leaving the podium to pace around and then come back to harangue Acosta when Acosta’s platform had been removed?

Nixon hated the press, too, but he would not have dared to have an aide get physical with a reporter. It is alarming that Cheeto’s henchmen feel that they can get away with this.

Acosta performs a great service, demonstrating that Trump can lose control over questions whose honest answers may suggest he’s not totally in control.

More alarming is that 40% of the country applauds it and want to go further.

The person with the “D” gets the job done—you were so diligent & deserved to win. It’s the letter “R” that won, and your village’s loss. So sorry.

Thanks for the kind words.

I called the chairwoman (who won reëlection) and informed her of the results from the county clerk, leaving the message on her answering machine.

What do old-timer software developers at LGF think about “Pair Programming”?

I think it sucks. It does not increase collaboration or productivity, it’s just a way for corporate to save money on equipment.

Well, having seen it in action, it is useful when attempting to crack really complex problem sets. It helps to have another person sitting at your shoulder - to bounce ideas off of, to check what you write in real time, to remind you of where you were going when you lose your way …

It’s actually more expensive in the short term, and managers hate it - but it turns out cleaner code. It’s like any other kind of complex writing - the more you can hammer on it to get it write the first time, the less time you have to spend later on clean-up.

The equipment cost is a fraction of a fraction of the employee cost.

The open primary/top two general election system we have in California is producing some interesting results. There seems to be about a one million vote drop off when the two candidates in the statewide general election are from the same party.

Governor and Secretary of State had R vs D and while the governor’s race had 96k more votes both were over 6.9m ballots cast (as of current reporting). The US Senate and Lt Gov races were D vs D and came in at 6.17m and 5.8m respectively. The insurance commissioner race which had a Democrat facing a former Republican now Independent (and former insurance commissioner) got 6.56m votes, for comparison’s sake.

Also in that insurance commissioner race, it’s looking like the Dem is going to win, and I’m going to have a special election in my state senate district afterall.

Time to call it a day. Up early for work tomorrow. Have fun, Lizards.

I’m off to bed as well. I suspect the canvassing board tonight is not going to flip the election in my favour after the automatic recount.

The difference is now two votes. Tonight’s canvassing board tells me that is close enough to trigger an automatic recount, but considering how small the town is, I don’t think that will flip the result.

The water system in particular. The village will either have to find another volunteer (good luck with that), or hire someone (we already tried that and couldn’t find a licensed operator to come out here even at $20 plus mileage).

For many years, and almost in spite of itself, Texas managed to gradually improve the educational level of the general populace. This was mostly driven by economic necessity. For instance, you can’t very well find oil without a working knowledge of geology, bullshit wildcatter legends notwithstanding.. In another field, the Dust Bowl and its eventual solutions, especially contour plowing, gave many farmers a healthy respect for agricultural science. With success comes complacency though and fundamentalist grifters have labored long and hard to reverse this progress since the 1970s. They understand that their prosperity depends on ignorance, and control of education is the only way to ensure a sufficient supply of ignorant marks.

The village attorney long told the board they should be paying me, but are only getting away with it because I am on the board and thus they can claim it’s government work.

Starting with the next board meeting (assuming the election results don’t change), then I will no longer be on the board. Government entities are not permitted in Nebraska to accept volunteers for state mandated work.

Unless they pay me, I have to quit. (That said, they could offer minimum wage plus mileage driving lab samples back and forth. That doesn’t mean I have to take minimum wage, and I would need to consult with the VA over my disability and how that would be affected.)
