California’s Pro-Russia Rep. Dana Rohrabacher Is Losing to Democrat Harley Rouda (Or, the Chuck C. Johnson Curse)

Politics • Views: 34,975
Chuck C. Johnson and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher pose in front of the Ecuadoran embassy in London. (Source: Facebook)

It looks like Russia’s best friend in Congress, Dana Rohrabacher, is going to be out of a job. All the votes aren’t counted yet, but it’s fairly sure at this point that he’s losing to Democratic challenger Harley Rouda in Orange County’s 48th district.

I’m not going to claim all the credit for it, but I’d like to believe that LGF’s exposé of Rohrabacher’s connections to Holocaust denier Chuck C. Johnson played a significant part in getting this guy out of office.

Make them pay you. Real money.

re: #253 Anymouse 🌹

The village attorney long told the board they should be paying me, but are only getting away with it because I am on the board and thus they can claim it’s government work.

Starting with the next board meeting (assuming the election results don’t change), then I will no longer be on the board. Government entities are not permitted in Nebraska to accept volunteers for state mandated work.

Unless they pay me, I have to quit. (That said, they could offer minimum wage plus mileage driving lab samples back and forth. That doesn’t mean I have to take minimum wage, and I would need to consult with the VA over my disability and how that would be affected.)

From last thread:

re: #217 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

Well, having seen it in action, it is useful when attempting to crack really complex problem sets. It helps to have another person sitting at your shoulder - to bounce ideas off of, to check what you write in real time, to remind you of where you were going when you lose your way …

It’s actually more expensive in the short term, and managers hate it - but it turns out cleaner code. It’s like any other kind of complex writing - the more you can hammer on it to get it write the first time, the less time you have to spend later on clean-up.

[Embedded content]

The equipment cost is a fraction of a fraction of the employee cost.

My experience is similar. Here’s what I wrote up before seeing Khal Wimpo’s response.

I always felt that pair programming can be useful in a very specific and limited set of circumstances.

For example when a specific problem needs to be addressed for one of a limited number of issues.
- Such as when a subject matter expert (SME) is needed for a specific programming question.
- Or if the requirements are not well understood or documented.
- Or if there is little consensus on how a problem should be addressed. (Note this is more a ‘political’ and ‘leadership’ problem.)

But as a more general approach, I find it inefficient and a general waste of time and resources.

I have no doubt that you already know this, but I feel that it has to be said.

The big problem with shifting the narrative is that the new distraction needs to be bigger/more important than the previous fiasco. Which means that the options for distraction become more limited and more dangerous.

At some point national security and perhaps even survival are all that are left in the table. I hope that we do not reach that point in the next two years.

It was noted elsewhere that after the last election in Wisconsin, the Republicans pushed through a bill to prohibit recounts if the election margin exceeds 1%. Scott Walker signed it into law.

He lost by 1.2%.

Acting cabinet officials who have not been approved by the Senate generally cannot change policies within their departments (they are essentially caretakers).

However, the GOP still controls the Senate.

On the one hand, the GOP insisted it wanted the investigation to continue, and was fine with Mueller.

On the other hand, power is what a conservative craves.

The difference between Sessions resigning and Sessions being fired, is that because he officially-on-paper seems to have resigned, Trump can move any other senate-confirmed appointee from some other job into that job.

If Sessions had refused to resign, if he’d insisted on being fired, the slot would have to stay open until a new appointee can be confirmed.

A reminder:

NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW—MUELLER FIRING RAPID RESPONSE

Donald Trump could be preparing to put himself above the law. We won’t allow it.

Trump will create a constitutional crisis if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller, or attempts to compromise the investigation by other means. (See The Plan for details.)

Our response in the hours following a potential power grab will dictate what happens next—whether Congress will stand up to Trump or allow him to move our democracy toward authoritarianism.

That’s why we’re preparing to hold emergency “Nobody Is Above the Law” rallies around the country, in the event they are needed—900+ of them and counting, in every state, with 400,000 RSVPs to date!

Join us.

First, he forced Sessions to resign. That’s known as firing someone. Congress should demand answers on this, since the nature of separation from office is critical as to who has the right to fill the position.

Second, Whitaker should recuse because he’s already expressed an opinion about how Mueller has already gone too far (sorry pal, but he hasn’t - objectively he’s stayed within his mandate). Trump is hoping to kneecap the investigation by any means necessary.

None of this is normal. None of this is on the up and up, and none of this should be tolerated by a Congress that upholds the Constitution. The GOP doesn’t give a shit about any of this, because they got what they wanted - a judiciary packed with right wing extremists, and Trump rolling back regulations and shifting the burdens on to those least able to endure them so millionaires can get richer.

From elsewhere …

Judge Andrew Napolitano, appearing on Dana Perino’s show, said Trump could have a legal problem with the appointment of Whittaker.

“About Matt Whittaker, under the law the person running the Department of Justice must have been approved by the United States Senate for some previous position, even on an interim post. Who is that person? Rod Rosenstein.

Acting Attorney General Whittaker is a former US Attorney…I think Iowa. In that context he was confirmed by the United States Senate, but he was not confirmed by the United States Senate for a leadership position in the Justice Department, and the statutes require that confirmation. The White House is going to have to work this out.

Who has been confirmed and hwo’s next in line? Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein.

Another example of you only get jail if you screw the wealthy:

A Manhattan federal jury has convicted sports radio personality Craig Carton of fraud — setting the fallen “Boomer and Carton” co-host up for as much as 45 years in prison.

After less than a day of deliberations, the jury of three men and nine women found Carton guilty on all counts, including securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Carton looked straight ahead as the jury read the verdict.

The roughly one-week trial included testimony from hedge fund executives who said they gave Carton millions as an investment in bulk event tickets, including a national tour by Metallica and two Barbra Streisand concerts.

Documents showed that the money instead went to pay Carton’s personal expenses, including his gambling loans.

re: #18 ckkatz

From last thread:

O HAI THERE!

Thanks for the shout-out and thoughtful engagement. I think the pair programming was a pilot project from Ford Motors (picked this up in a seminar on Agile & Scrum a while back - don’t @ me, as the kids say).

I find that when I’m grappling with something that’s got a lot of moving parts, I work best when grinding on it on my own for a while, and as I get closer to production, having another pair of eyes on this is, for my “Imposter Syndrome” plagued self, absolutely critical.

After a while spent just staring at anything you’ve done, everything starts to look wrong, and you just start spinning your wheels, writing and re-writing the same goddam thing 30 times.

Well, at least I do.

It’s all well and good that there’s turnover in any admin (and the midterms are usually when there’s a bump in turnover), but Trump has had an absurd amount of turnover, mostly because he’s incompetent and doesn’t know what he’s doing and hired incompetent people to advise him.

The new Democratic majority House will be sidelined even before they take office, efforts to reign in Trump by investigation and Constitutional limitations will be opposed by the GOP Senate and supported by the majority Republican State Governments and Governor seats. And they will be quite open about it. Along the way they will hem and haw about Constitutionality, but in action let Trump run roughshod over basic Law and Rights.

Houston poll worker charged with assault after a racist tirade.

chron.com

An Election Day poll worker was relieved of her duties and charged with misdemeanor criminal assault after she allegedly bumped into a black voter and made a remark about “blackface” following some confusion over the woman’s voter registration.

One poll worker walked off the job at the Iglesia Bautista Libre polling location in north Houston after the incident, and another was left in tears as she gave a statement to a Harris County sheriff’s deputy about the altercation.

A team from the Harris County Attorney’s office arrived at the polling site and has launched an investigation. The voter, Rolanda Anthony, said she believed the incident was a flagrant attempt to suppress her vote.

“I feel like my vote today is more important than ever,” Anthony said.

The incident was among dozens of problems reported at polling locations across Harris County, ranging from sites being slow to open in the morning to technical problems that limited the number of voting machines available. A state district judge ruled Tuesday afternoon that the county must operate nine polling locations an extra hour, until 8 p.m., because of the delays.

Remember, trump is a master of bullshit and marketing.

The thing he did this morning was an absolute disaster. He’s doing what he always does…shifting the narrative.

One little word can be eliminated and it makes that sentence more realistic.

And what he is doing today is looking for the easy way out to cover his ample ass. Just like he always did in his businesses. Fuck up a deal, blame it on someone else, sue to keep everything quiet and then cut a backdoor deal…usually a loser.

I’m hoping this too is a losing move. I think Mueller is way more intelligent than Trump and obviously he knew Trump would do just what he is doing.

Hell, we all knew this was coming. So, no surprise to Mueller.

I think there are some surprises coming.

Oh yeah, fuck Lindsey Graham. He has already said he is cool with Sessions being booted because it just wasn’t working. That was a quick fold.

Yes: and assuming the numbers I saw in the NYTimes recap (which said “100% of precincts reported”) are firm, Abrams would need to find something north of 13,000 extra votes overall to get it up to near runoff levels.

Which I’m sure is well within the range of Dem votes Brian Kemp managed to suppress with his pre-election shenanigans, but there we are….

He had an R after his name, nothing else matters.

Elections here are ostensibly non-partisan (no party is listed on the ballot), and he was a write-in candidate. Voters specifically had to write in his name exactly as it appeared when he registered or the vote wouldn’t count.

That’s about my only hope of salvaging the election tonight when the canvassing board does the automatic recount.

I’m curious how Donny sees this working without getting his ass hauled to court. It’s like a slow-motion Saturday Night Massacre, having removed an AG he feels is standing in the way and looking to replace him with a hired goon. At this point, any attempt to fire Mueller is going to land the White House in court for all sorts of reasons. And it’s late enough in the investigation that attempts to knee-cap it (ex. cutting funding) likely won’t prevent Mueller from putting together a very damning final report, which would hold greater weight in light of the efforts to sandbag him in the 11th hour.

The only way this makes any sense at all…is he believes the law does not apply to him. If that’s the case, he’s about to get one very rude awakening.

Over at RedState, I guess they “forgot” about the Mayflower Hotel, or that Rosenstein was appointed by George W. Bush:

What could possibly explain such a move by one of Donald Trump’s earliest supporters? Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump and rapidly became a trusted Trump advisor. Yet, he allowed pressure from the left over two minor contacts with a Russian ambassador to make the decision for him.

During the July 2016 Republican National Convention, Sessions gave a speech at an event sponsored by the Heritage Foundation. Afterward, he spoke to a group of ambassadors, which included Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. This wasn’t even a one on one discussion.

Then, in September 2016, Sessions held a meeting with Kislyak in his office. Why he failed to disclose these interactions during his Senate Confirmation hearings is a mystery as each contact, especially the first that he had no control over, could have been so easily dealt with at the time. Holding a meeting with a Russian ambassador in his office, in and of itself, is innocuous. “Ambassadors are in Washington to represent their country’s interests, which often requires contact with legislators involved in debates over trade, defense, or anything else, really.” Nevertheless, when asked if he had any involvement with Russians during his confirmation hearing, he said no.

re: #316 Anymouse 🌹

I have my own gun and my sister was gay married.

I have a coworker who’s a Trump/NRA fan and believes all the lies they spout. The look on her face when I mentioned recently buying a shotgun was priceless. You could see the cognitive dissonance on her face trying to reconcile the idea of a LIBRUL buying/owning a gun versus all the lies about liberals wanting to take away everyone’s guns. She finally tried to reconcile it by saying that, well, we’re a sanctuary state so of course everyone needs a gun (I believe soon-to-be ex-governor Rauner vetoed the sanctuary legislation). When I replied that statistically I was far less likely to be hurt by an immigrant and that I was afraid of my fellow citizens, not immigrants (legal or not) she was stunned.

I tried for a long time to keep my political opinions to myself at work, but lately I’ve been speaking my mind. Let’s just say that my coworkers have begun to understand that progressive are NOT low information or stupid. The few tries they’ve made to justify their position was immediately shot down with non-partisan data. For example, one claimed that asylum seekers had to be detained because none of them show up for their court dates. He insisted repeatedly that the number returning for court was zero. So, I sent him a copy of the U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review report, showing that the number returning for court is around or above 90%. He hasn’t responded.

I’m hoping that at least a few will realize that liberals aren’t what the right wing claims and that they will even begin to question their sources of information when the obvious lies are exposed. Given we’re dealing with what amounts to a cult I’m not sure now likely that is, but I refuse to be passive anymore.

I was looking at a CT scan of one of the mass-shooting victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who had been brought to the trauma center during my call shift. The organ looked like an overripe melon smashed by a sledgehammer, and was bleeding extensively. How could a gunshot wound have caused this much damage?

The reaction in the emergency room was the same. One of the trauma surgeons opened a young victim in the operating room, and found only shreds of the organ that had been hit by a bullet from an AR-15, a semiautomatic rifle that delivers a devastatingly lethal, high-velocity bullet to the victim. Nothing was left to repair—and utterly, devastatingly, nothing could be done to fix the problem. The injury was fatal.

He will make it impossible for someone to get an abortion because more often than not, they wont even know they’re pregnant at 6 weeks.

It’s a purposefully arbitrary and capricious date designed to outlaw abortion so that they can force women to carry to term, or otherwise criminalize the women who try to get an abortion and the doctors who provide those services.

King wants to pass a bill that goes against medical science.

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again - I suspect if a law like this were to pass, and if the fundamental holding of Roe ended up before the Supreme Court, the conservative members would very quickly realize there’s no logical way to go back to a pre-Roe states’ right set up. By saying something that is a federally protected constitutional right is no longer a federally protected constitutional right, you open the door to all sorts of other landmark cases potentially being overturned. Their only two choices if the issue is squarely before them is either that “life” under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments begins at conception and the fetus must be protected, or the woman’s right to privacy exists and must be protected. There’s really no logical argument to get to a pre-Roe world.

My iMac laptop is going nuts. It’s using several GB of bandwidth per hour. Which I don’t have-we’re limited by our ISP home (currently at a hotel in Monterey, so it’s their bandwidth) I checked the activity monitor and it just seems to be constantly running several dozen things from Spotlight and Safari apps (I’m using Firefox, so what’s up with that?) to a veritable alphabet soup of things I don’t know what they are. When I’m not actually receiving anything, it still keeps trying to send stuff.

Any ideas on what to do about this?

Iowa may well be in play against in 2020 - Democratic governor, three of four representatives, decent number of statewide offices in the D category.

Iowa is interesting. Went for Gore in 2000 but Bush in 2004. Obama twice but Trump. It definitely will be one to watch for sure. I think Iowa’s future depends on how much the farmers there feel the blowback of Trump’s tariffs. Do we have any Iowa lizards or people with a good gauge of their politics because we need to recruit a good candidate to run against Joni Ernst. She certainly will be a strong DSCC target for the reasons we’ve both gotten at.

“As a result of today’s incident, the White House is suspending the hard pass of the reporter involved until further notice,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders says.

This will deny unescorted entry to the WH grounds for @Acosta.

So, Fox will throw a fit about this and come to CNN/Acosta’s defense of the rights of a journalist.

They did earlier this year.

And they did that then because of when they were all bent out of shape when the Obama White House criticized them as an arm of the Republican party.

Journalist sticking together and sticking up for one another, right?

President Obama’s Feud with FOX News

After months of taking incoming fire from the prime-time stars of Fox News, the Obama White House is firing back, charging that FOX News is different from all other news.
“FOX News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican party,” said Anita Dunn, White House communications director.

“If media is operating basically as a talk radio format, then that’s one thing, and if it’s operating as a news outlet, then that’s another,” Mr. Obama said.

And the White House has gone beyond words, reports CBS News senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield. Last Sept. 20, the president went on every Sunday news show - except Chris Wallace’s show on FOX. And on Thursday, the Treasury Department tried to exclude FOX News from pool coverage of interviews with a key official. It backed down after strong protests from the press.

“All the networks said, that’s it, you’ve crossed the line,” said CBS News White House correspondent Chip Reid.

In Washington, not Florida:

Police Arrest Man For Allegedly Having Sex With Dying Beaver While High On Methamphetamine (Goes to IFLScience, more at the link):

A 35-year-old Washington man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly having sex with a dying beaver while high on methamphetamine, reports Washington television station KXLY.

Don’t bother pinching yourself. Yes, this is real life.

It started around 9pm when a local woman came across a beaver that had been struck by a car.

“Someone help me save this beaver,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “I flipped him over so he would walk but his leg is broken.”

She was able to move the beaver out of the way of traffic by placing it on a towel and dragging it closer to a nearby pond. After calling local wildlife agencies and veterinary clinics that were closed for the holiday weekend, she decided to run home and grab a plastic tub that she could keep the animal in until authorities were open the following day.

When she came back, she had a rather unsightly surprise.

“He’s deceased,” she later wrote in the comments. “I caught a homeless man having sex with the beaver. I’m traumatized!!”

Not sure what to make of this, but my appendix was removed when I was seventeen:

Misfolded α-synuclein is a pathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Killinger et al. now report that the human appendix contains an abundance of misfolded α-synuclein and that removal of the appendix decreased the risk of developing PD. The appendix of both PD cases and healthy individuals contained abnormally cleaved and aggregated forms of α-synuclein, analogous to those found in postmortem brain tissue from patients with PD. Furthermore, α-synuclein derived from the appendix seeded rapid aggregation of recombinant α-synuclein in vitro. In two large-scale epidemiological studies, the authors demonstrated that an appendectomy occurring decades prior reduced the risk of developing PD, suggesting that the appendix may be implicated in PD initiation.

I had recurrent appendicitis (appendix was positioned wrong and would be pinched off periodically).

I had a second surgery aboard ship when the scar burst open in the chow hall and blood spread across my shirt during dinner hours. Made a lot of people sick as my best friend dragged me to sickbay.

Turns out a fistula had developed in my intestine at the surgical scar, and all that crap was pouring into my abdominal cavity. Spent a couple weeks in sickbay after they opened me back up and cleaned all that out.

The closest historical parallel I can think of for Trump is Crassus, who along with Julius Caesar and Pompey was one of the main players at the end of the Roman Republic.

Too cowardly to fight his own battles or wars, he just hired mercenaries with his great wealth. One of his wealth building tactics was to have his thugs start fires which his fire department would charge to put out.

He probably would have won reëlection to the US House, so that counts for two losses in one.

A couple of extra layers to the famous “Dewey Defeats Truman” pic: the Chicago Tribune was owned by an obsessively Republican “press lord” and was famously, and fanatically, anti-Truman.
Also: the Trib had had to run its presses without their usual union crew (they had been on strike) - the pressmen were forced to set up the front pages ahead of time, and had to pick one headline or another before the presses rolled. Bad choice….
They actually changed the headline for the next edition, but old Harry S. got a copy of the “wrong” one at a train stop. No wonder he was smiling…

Then that’s moronic. The problem with capitalism at least now is that people worship it. You shouldn’t be worshiping any economic system. You should see economic systems for what they are. They’re about people. That’s why doctrinaire socialism fails and it’s why doctrinaire capitalism does too. Conservatives in this country have convinced themselves they are the guardians of capitalism and their liberal opponents are opponents of it. Me? I like some of what capitalism offers. When people ask me to describe my views on economics, I go something like this “Listen, some things I feel should always been run by the government i.e. the military, prisons, some things I think both the government and private sector can do i.e. housing, health care, infrastructure, and some I think that the private sector does best i.e. commercial goods and food. We have never ever been purely capitalist. Our whole debate throughout the centuries has been about whether we think government should be more or elss involved in the economy. It’s not socialist versus capitalism no matter what your stupid Capitalism is number one memes tell you nor your lefty buddy who tells you Capitalism is all evil and we need a Socialist revolution. Economics is a social science. It’s about people. So leave doctrinaire bullshit out of it and focus on solutions that benefit people and not just those that make you feel good in your ivory tower of socialism or capitalism.

Funnily enough capitalism needs capitalism in the sense of competing ideas like socialism and others to keep it stronger. That’s why we beat the Soviets. We didn’t do it by being Laissez-Faire, we did it by understanding that there are aspects of Capitalism that make the world better and there are yes aspects of Socialism that do. We definitely were more capitalist than socialist I don’t deny that but we never were purely Capitalist and I think Smith were he here would be disgusted to seeing his system used as a means of impeding upward mobility.

I’m going to steal your shoe example in a debate down the road :). I think it’s a great illustration of it. I explained it also like this to some libertarians I know who surprisingly were pretty understanding of this. I feel the government should give people a foundation. What we do with the specifics is up to us i.e. the schools we attend, jobs we do, etc but a simple foundation like education, health care, safety, etc shouldn’t be solely for profit. Obviously I’m not against private schools or private security companies but I don’t think if you can’t afford school, you should be deprived an education or if you can’t afford security, you should be at higher risk for crime.

Instead, what we need to do is get prepared for 2020. After Christmas, Democrats need to find new candidates to run from the bottom to the top. We need to get people registered to vote. Republicans floated the idea in the Unicameral a couple years ago, and after the whole phone network in Lincoln was jammed for about five days, they decided that wasn’t the hill they wanted to die on.

Education in general and teachers in particular are actually funded pretty well here.

Part of the reason it failed in Texas is that, for many rural areas, the school system is the largest employer. Socialism at its best.

Yep, big pusher of the America First Movement if I remember my history.

Published a story about how US submarines were escaping Japanese depth charges because they set them to blow too shallow. The Japanese then changed their depth settings accordingly.

So how many does that make, now?
And I love it also for the fact that NM-2 will have a Congressperson named “Xochitl”..

We are all Xochitlists now.

Now it would be nice if those rural residents would realize that the same can apply to things like health care, housing, etc.

This guy’s kind of out there. I’m stopping after these because he’s just blind:

Does this idiot not even know that Flint water was poisoned by Ayn Randian Republicans who thought they could save a buck by switching the water system?

Um yeah I’m sure he does not know that little fact.

They had Limbaugh on Armed Forces radio too didn’t they? I have no idea what genius came up with that idea.

A propaganda machine doesn’t build itself.

OK this week’s “South Park” episode was basically a commercial for “Red Dead Redemption II” which also happens to advertise on Comedy Central. There’s your “free market” in action.

You know who also went after Ted Cruz and Ted Cruz’s wife? Donald Trump.

Maybe Tucker shouldn’t be a fucking racist asshole and go out to eat in places like Washington D.C. and NYC that are full of diversity. He’s free to say what bigoted crap he wants without government punishment but he’s not free to have no consequences at all for being a racist prick.

As I said this guy is the natural consequence of the stupid capitalism worship memes I saw my conservative friend post in teh past. It’s okay to think capitalism is a good economic system. I happen to agree more than I don’t but where I don’t agree is that it’s without flaws. If it didn’t have flaws, our grandparents would have never gotten the GI Bill in WWII and I for one am grateful that the GI Bill existed to give my grandfather a trade school education he never would have been able to afford as a the poor son of a coal miner in a big family.

It served its purpose to gin up enough GOP voters to blunt the Dem gains where they could, therefore it can be put to pasture…until Trump needs that boogeyman again, which will be soon enough.

I remember when Disney bought ABC. Every ABC show had to have an episode that went to Disneyland/world.

Where does this fit in with the “dead girl or a live boy” election losing theory???

It does appear that yesterday the Republicans sewed up the indicted-American and dead pimp groups. (And yes, Hof wrote an autobiography titled “,” The Art of the Pimp )

The idiot is spelling “You’re” as “your”… give it up, you can’t penetrate stupid. Too many idiots like to show us all what geniuses they are via their misspelling, bad grammar and alternative facts. They aren’t going to listen to you because they already know everything there is to know.

It would be more productive to state your case to a brick.
