Long ago I went to NYC as a rookie sales rep from Los Angeles. Kind people offered advice about NY. How to stay out of harms way. Few years later I went back again chasing new biz soon after the King riots, Laguna fires and Northridge earthquake had all recently occurred. “Where are you from?” they asked. “Los Angeles” I said. “oh you will be fine” they then told me. All it took to get a portion of street cred in NYC was a massive earthquake, culture altering riots and a firestorm that killed 16 while it burned 362 homes. It’s all about perspective.

Kris Kobach already tried that a few years ago with federal absentee ballots … claiming they could not properly verify ID/citizenship. It was fought through the courts and Kobach was told to take his anti-military rule and stuff it. Federal ballots do not require that nonsense, and are sworn to by a military officer.

What’s your daily driver?

My daily driver was a 2003 Cavalier. I put a bore scope in and it looked like the piston got hit with a valve (it had 180,000 miles on it and is an interference engine). I also noticed a pretty good crack in the subframe while working on it. But, my wifes car is way nicer and I keep it up much better so it’s a drag about the radiator, but sucks that it blows up right when we get 3 inches of snow and 20 degrees outside, otherwise I could work on it out in the driveway instead of my unheated detached garage crammed full of shit.

Okay, last night I was pondering whether Whitaker was part of the Monica Goodling bullshit at justice when he was a US Attorney—I’m leaning more and more toward yes after reading about his “big case” when he had that gig:

the federal government’s case against an Iowa state senator — a rarity to begin with — was based on the word of a man former associates depicted as a drug user, a deadbeat and an abuser of women; a man so shady even his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsors called him “a pathological liar.”

Not surprisingly, it took a Des Moines jury less than two hours to acquit McCoy…

Why would the federal government contact, wire and pay an informant without checking him out — or, worse, despite knowing he was disreputable? It has all the earmarks of a politically motivated witch hunt…

McCoy is a Democrat. Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. attorney who launched the case, is a Bush-appointed Republican. McCoy is openly gay. Whitaker has ties to the evangelical Christian community.

desmoinesregister.com

And this whole YUUUGE case was over the supposed “extortion” of a whopping $2,000 (and the feds paid their sleazy informant $2,600)

Bob Cesca has said on his podcast that he moved back to D.C. in large part because of wildfires. He lived in Santa Rosa during the Tubbs Fire, I’m sure that scared the shit out of him.

Hell, about 35 acres burned northwest of my twenty this summer, flames could be seen from my driveway. That scared the shit out of me. Fortunately we had good air support and the weather cooperated in the days after the fire started.

Fuck, man. Wildfires are right up there with big earthquakes and tsunamis on our Oh-Shit-O-Meters. Wildfires can be *way worse* than even the biggest tornadoes when it comes to property loss. I’ve witnessed it several times here in Colorado, whole subdivisions reduced to ash.

He should be fucking crucified; by the students, their parents, and by everybody else within 100 miles.

From the comments, it sounds like he kept the kids there to force the fire department to defend the property. If they’d vacated when they were told to (and let the campus burn), the trucks/planes/personnel could redeploy elsewhere.

Here’s something that keeps China’s leaders up at night. What happens if all these property owners try to unload their investments at the same time?

A Fifth of China’s Homes Are Empty. That’s 50 Million Apartments

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s mantra that homes should be for living in is falling on deaf ears, with tens of millions of apartments and houses standing empty across the country.

Soon-to-be-published research will show roughly 22 percent of China’s urban housing stock is unoccupied, according to Professor Gan Li, who runs the main nationwide study. That adds up to more than 50 million empty homes, he said.

The nightmare scenario for policy makers is that owners of unoccupied dwellings rush to sell if cracks start appearing in the property market, causing prices to spiral. The latest data, from a survey in 2017, also suggests Beijing’s efforts to curb property speculation — considered by leaders a key threat to financial and social stability — are coming up short.

“There’s no other single country with such a high vacancy rate,” said Gan, of Chengdu’s Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. “Should any crack emerge in the property market, the homes to be offloaded will hit China like a flood.”

bloomberg.com

Many middle-income and higher people speculated and bought second or even third homes, because real estate is about the only investment vehicle open to most Chinese. The trend was so prevalent that the government had to enact restrictions on how many homes one family could own. Then, couples were getting divorced, so each partner could invest in a third (or fourth) unit. So, now China is saddled with millions of empty units that cost too much for most younger people to buy, and a real estate bubble just waiting to pop.

A number of my friends have seen their net worth at least double as property values increase, but they can only realize those gains if they can manage to sell.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s over in France fucking over our allies, having a misunderstanding with Macron, and isn’t making a scheduled trip to a WWI cemetery because of bad weather grounding his helicopter (as though the hour drive by car wouldn’t be possible?)

Oh, and he’s busy attacking California as it suffers though yet another horrific wildfire season - and this is the worst year on record, with record damage and deaths - and the latest fires aren’t even close to being under control.

Trump blames poor forest management and that he’d cut funding if California doesn’t change.

Umm… what does Trump want to change? The weather?

Because wildfires in California all start the same way: wet spring, dry summers, and strong winds in the fall where a single spark - from a downed power line, arson, or lightning, can spark a conflagration in any dry vegetation - forest, prairie, scrub, etc.

And if you look at the photos of the various areas being burned, they’re not “forests”, but scrub. The Forest Service may administer the land, but they handle more than actual forests with tall trees.

Trump’s a fucking loon, and he’s pandering to his know nothing lunatic base. This is just more of the pattern of bulkshitting.

It’s what he does.

lawhawk  Nov 10, 2018 • 5:53:09am

Oh, and Trump shows ZERO empathy for the victims of these fires, or any other natural disaster. He can’t be bothered, as entire communities are burned to cinders.

Now, there are good questions we can ask as to how California manages its building codes as it relates to fire hazards. We should be reconsidering fire hazard maps, and make sure that structures meet fire hazard reduction efforts for existing structures, and new methods for new construction.

That’s what Trump should be talking about - but instead he’s busy attacking and demeaning and bullying and bloviating and bullshitting.

Talk about actual solutions - how the feds can help get CA residents assistance they need to rebuild stronger/better so they can better resist fires (changing the kinds of landscaping acceptable, suggesting roofing and exterior materials that can help resist fires, etc.

But that’s not what Trump wants to do. He would rather things burn.

None of my Great Grandfathers were in the war but it got me thinking about how they must have felt about the war. They were born in four different countries and what’s more is that they would have interesting perspectives. My great grandfather who I share a surname with was German born. My dad’s other grandfather was US born. And my two other great grandfather’s were of the two groups trying to gain independence from Austria Hungary. Hell there still isn’t a Rusyn state.

When I was a kid I asked Grandpa Bacon if he ever heard the voice of God.

Grandpa said he heard it only twice in his life.

First, when there was silence on the front lines in France when the Armistice took hold.

Second, when he heard on the radio the day after Election Day 1932 that FDR slaughtered Hoover. Grandpa said he went to bed Election Night 1932 dejected because Hoover carried Pennsylvania. Dad couldn’t sleep he was glued to the radio. Grandpa asked him to turn the radio down he didn’t want to get any sadder. Dad said it wasn’t until 3AM that a lot of the vote came in from the rest of the Midwest and South that it looked like FDR was winning. Dad remembered that Lowell Thomas kept talking about Hoover winning a squeaker…until around 3AM Wednesday morning…

‘Mingus: Jazz In Detroit’ Catches A Giant At A Moment Full Of Possibility

Detroit. Feb. 13, 1973. A Tuesday night.

The Charles Mingus Quintet opened a six-night stand at the Strata Concert Gallery, a former photography studio at 46 Selden St., on a gritty street in the shadow of then-abandoned Orchestra Hall. The venue — an offshoot of the musician-run Strata Corporation — attracted aficionados and musicians. WDET-FM, the public radio station affiliated with nearby Wayne State University, broadcast the music live.

The Strata Concert Gallery, which showcased a jaw-dropping roster of acts, from Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi sextet to Ornette Coleman, was the epicenter of the scene for Detroit’s most progressive musicians and audience. Mingus had not appeared in the city since September 1969, when the volatile bassist, composer and bandleader substituted for an indisposed Thelonious Monk at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge. Mingus’ last club engagement in Detroit before that was in 1960. No wonder folks had been buzzing for weeks in anticipation.

“For Mingus to be here was special,” said veteran Detroit guitarist Ron English, who was present the night of the recording. “He represented what we aspired too — that kind of creative freedom. That was the kind of music we wanted to make.”

The music Mingus played that night in Detroit — all 3 hours and 45 minutes of it, plus 45 minutes of radio commentary and an interview with drummer and Detroit-native Roy Brooks — has just been released by 180 Proof Records and BBE Music. It has a similarly expansive title: Mingus: Jazz in Detroit/Strata Concert Gallery/46 Selden. Consumers have a choice between five CDs, five LPs or digital. (Downloading or streaming gets you everything, including a second take of “Pithecanthropus Erectus” not on CD, while the LPs lack three additional tracks and the radio commentary.)

Johan, the Belgian archaeologist mentioned spoke to our tour group about the two brothers that inspired this memorial. It was very moving because as I said I had my own brother with me and there were alot of Australians in our group that had fathers and grandfathers serve in the battlefields that we passed. Cold here too. Currently 26° with a fair amount of wind making it feel like 20°. Which is a huge drop from the 50s in one day. So it is a bit shocking. Saw some snow flurries last night around midnight. First in Columbus. Actual snow on the ground 30 miles north.

What can Trump be hoping to do by threatening CA in the middle of natural disasters? I’d guess an awful lot of the people up around Paradise vote reliably GOP.
Also, most of the land up there is either federally or privately owned, and there is speculation that a downed electrical wire (where have we heard that before?) may have caused the Camp Fire. So we have the Feds, private landowners, and a corporate entity involved.

Heh. Interesting, if only vaguely relevant, statistic. Yes, of course the “GOP tax plan” wasn’t an electoral winner - despite the torrent of BS and hype from the WH and GOP: but what is likely to be done about it?

Any actual “reforms” of the 2017 giveaway are going to have to:
1) Get through the House
2) Get through the Senate
3) Get past Donald Trump
4) Do all of the above by a margin that could override a Presidential veto.

1) is about the only thing I can (reasonably) see happening.

That takes actually educating that base, and all the Republicans do is feed them bullshit. It is unsustainable.

They do prescribed burns out here too, but 100 years of Smokey the Bear suppressing all fires means the area to try to manage is huge, and of course, a lot of people have built houses in areas that are tinderboxes in the meanwhile. Also, while the burns occur throughout the year, they like to do those burns when winter will be setting in with rain and snow and such. It is now Nov. and still obviously unsuitable.

All of the Lower 48 was managed by controlled burning by the Native tribes before Europeans ever saw it. Then Verazzano’s men set foot in New England and smallpox spread like wildfire (sorry), decimating the Native population to the Mississippi and beyond. When Europeans then entered this landscape many years later, they thought the open parkland and passable forests with no underbrush was natural. They were wrong. They let it get out of hand, and voilà: wildfires.

Trump couldn’t be bothered to attend a ceremony at a US military cemetery an hour from where he’s staying in Paris - by car.

Thing about that for a moment. He flew over to Paris supposedly for this commemoration, but the reality is that it’s likely the excuse to meet with Putin again that drove this meeting. I know that there’s a so-called on again/off again nature to that meeting, but it’s likely to be on.

Otherwise, Trump flew out to Paris for what reason? To spew nonsense at California from another continent? To antagonize NATO members again on European soil on the same day we’re honoring the dead of the WWI?

Trump couldn’t be bothered to honor the dead. He couldn’t be bothered to honor the Marine dead at Belleau Wood. Any Marine or servicemember who is watching/reading should be questioning how a CINC could do such a thing, even as he spews empty platitudes on twitter about how he’s the hugest supporter of the troops ever, if you ignore that the VA is again looking to cut the budget as demanded by… Trump.
