They find that idea so abhorrent that I doubt they think about it.

It’s really strange. There’s no mention of Trump’s no-show in France on the conservative blogs and very little mention on conservative news. I wonder why.

They’re still trying to figure out how to use a 20 year old reference of “cheese eating surrender monkeys” against the French in this story

I always got annoyed by the stereotype as the French as cowards. They lost more people in WWI than we have in all of our wars combined. And I admit I’ve made that stupid joke myself before but I haven’t since I educated myself more about WWI especially and how it just devastated that country.

I have to admit that I’m amused at the look that must have passed over the Frenchman’s face when he received that line. It must have been similar to the German who received the infamous reply at the Siege of Bastogne, “NUTS!” Something along the lines of, “What the ever-loving FUCK is broken with these Americans?!”

What I love about nuts is the simplicity of it all. I don’t know too much about General McAuliffe outside that line but it made him legendary.

Our view of history is always colored. Ask an American how the allies won WWII and they’ll say it’s because we beat the Germans. Ask a Russian, and they’ll say it was because of them. Ask the Brits, ask the French…

But yeah, the Iraq war build up was a shit show, made even worse with hindsight.

Simplicity on our side. It took some explaining by the German officer who had to return that reply to his commander, because the euphemism definitely did not translate across the cultural boundary.

A quick visit over to Faux shows the excuse going around among the faithful who actually broach the subject is that the Secret Service is to blame. That they called off the use of Marine One due to “inclement weather” and that a motorcade couldn’t be used because they hadn’t scouted the route ahead of time.

By tomorrow morning, any Republican or wingnut asked about the matter will suggest that that is the “real” reason, that the SS are so incompetent that they could not plan this all out with weeks (at a minimum) head’s up.

To answer your other part: McAuliffe was, at the time, in command of the then-already-legendary 101st Airborne. He was promoted to CinC European Theater after the war. He obviously had some merit as a commanding officer.

Taylor was commander of the airborne but McAuliffe was in charge because he was on leave in Washington when the Bulge happened I believe. Glad he got a post career because the 101’s grit in the Bulge was the stuff of legends. The Bulge has always had a place in my imagination because of both Band of Brothers and both my parents having uncles present at the batlte.

Whereas for me, D-Day was always my fascination, both for the sheer tenacity and audacity of the attack and because I know that on the other side of the Channel, my mother’s father was anxiously awaiting the return of the Pathfinder planes, bombers, and fighters who were engaging in close air support over the beaches. I wonder how many friends of his flew over the Channel and didn’t make it back.

I’d never heard that story, until the TV show Jericho.

(for those who’ve never seen it and are looking for a new-old show to binge… it’s about life in what used to be the US until Blackwater set off nukes in all the big cities).

And really, they would all have a point. Without the Brits fighting on after the fall of France, the US would have lost a vital jumping off point and the Soviets would have lost a lot more Lend-Lease Aid to u-boats. Without the Eastern Front bleeding the Nazis white, the Kriegsmarine would have had more resources to plow into bombers and submarines, eventually knocking the Brits out of the war. Without French partisans gathering intel and sabotaging the Reich’s occupation troops, D-Day would have been a lot bloodier and the drive to Berlin much longer. The Aussies, the Dutch, the Kiwis, etc, etc.

Absolutely. Plus Saving Private Ryan had a big role putting Overlord into people around our age’s imagination and the many WWII games too. Market Garden is another one that fascinates me because of the sheer ambition of it by the normally cautious Monty. The European Theater has always fascinated me more than the Pacific. I dunno why. Perhaps it’s because the battles were fought in countries we know well and the Pacific were fought on islands that aren’t as known. Plus nearly all my family was in the European front. A notable exception being my famous relative Mike Strank on Iwo Jima. His 99th birthday was yesterday the 10th on the USMC birthday no less.

Also, it’s gotta be the most 2018 thing ever when a decently written and grammatically correct Tweet goes out from the account of the President of the United States and everyone is like “Whoa, what the fuck? There’s no way he wrote that. He’s NEVER that nice.”

Bloody hell.

The earlier reference to Dieppe is also appropriate here. Without the Canadians sacrificing themselves on the beach, we wouldn’t have learned the valuable lessons we needed to carry the beaches at Normandy in 1944.

I’ve posted it before, but it’s almost Veteran’s Day in the Central Time Zone so here goes:

Bomber maintenance crew

That biiiiig, tall SOB on the left is my grandfather. I am the heir-apparent to his legacy, the jack of all trades and the master of none. I have little insight into his military career, only that he served with distinction in England at the close of WWII and my grandmother had an envelope with a Purple Heart stamp on it. I still have yet to run that information down. But he is the main reason I celebrate Veteran’s Day as I do; he was not a perfect man, nor even a great man, but in the end, he was a good man, and that is enough.

So, in a another bit of good news, it looks like my state senator will finally be a Democrat. Our county representation is split into the Democratic majority Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur coast…..and the other half of the county is the ag lands of the Salinas Valley. In the almost fifteen years of living on this side of the division, I’ve had a Republican state senator. So, this also means a probable Democratic supermajority in the CA Senate. Hello from the People’s Republic of California!

Not only that, but if you do a little numbers-crunching regarding French casualty figures from WWII, you’ll see that the numbers were almost the same in WWII as they were in WWI. Needless to say, this was catastrophic as far as France was concerned and I’m fairly sure that if little ol’ me can do this, someone back in the French High Command could’ve done the same back-of-the-envelope math in 1940.

The final episode of the 10-part miniseries The First World War deals with the the run-up to the end of WWI and its aftermath; the entire episode (as is the rest of them) is worth watching (and all of them should be on YT), but I’ve posted it this one here to start about 2/3rds in, where it gives an accounting of the human costs of the war and the consequences that the world has been dealing with ever since:

The First World War: War Without End (2003)- Part 10 of 10

Dana Rohrabacher is fucking disgusting:

Massive black stains and muck covered the carpet throughout the home. Sticky grime encased damaged, rusted appliances. Denied water, once-thriving outside plants and grass dried up and died. Blinds were cracked. Black dirt ruined the appearance of once-sparkling tile floors. Walls inexplicably contained odd holes, nail polish, wax and some smelly substance that may have been feces.

Every toilet seat in the house was broken. The ceilings showed smoke damage. Light switches had been cracked. Clumps of hair and remnants of what may have been balloons or some other rubbery material clogged sinks. Cracks scarred doors. Thick, solidified grease rendered the air-suction vent above the kitchen stove useless. Bathroom towel bars were missing, and vanities suffered water damage.

A second-floor suite used by Dana’s wife, Rhonda, as her bedroom contained a huge, mysterious, lubricant-like stain—something you might expect on the floor of a Hollywood sex club—that had seeped through thick carpet and padding to tarnish a hardwood floor. The dishwasher wasn’t functioning. A wooden chair in the back yard had been crushed, and phone lines were strangely severed. An overflowing tub cracked a ceiling with water damage.

And, no joke, white maggots squirmed underneath a kitchen stove that may not have ever been cleaned during Rohrabacher’s $3,350-per-month occupancy, which was secured, in part, with character references from fellow OC congressmen Ed Royce, John Campbell and Ken Calvert.

One time a tanker semi crashed just outside the west portal of the Hanging Lake Tunnels on the Glenwood Canyon portion of I-70 in Colorado. Fuckin’ thing exploded, the driver died. The highway was closed for almost two weeks because…

…the asphalt was warped and in some places melted through the road deck.

Personally, what I’m curious about is just what rodent copulation the GOP will try to get up to in those nine weeks. Besides the most obvious which will be a likely showdown over a year-end funding bill, I suspect we’re gonna see Yertle continuing to pack the courts. There’s no chance of getting a vote on whoever Trump nominates for the AG slot before January, nor ratification of NAFTA 1.2. But the GOP figure they’ve got nothing to lose now that they’re good until 2020, so that’s gonna liberate them to make a last ditch effort at something. What? No telling right now.

That was my wakeup scene as well. A doe was dozing in our backyard and wandered off about 20 minutes ago.

But that’s not the thing bugging me.

It’s that Trump went to Paris and then couldn’t get to a US military cemetery to honor our fallen, because it was raining.

It was wet? It was windy? That’s the excuse?

Trump and the GOP make such a show of being “for” the veterans, but when rubber meets the road, it’s all just empty platitudes and blustering BS. The reality is that they see the military as props, and they ignore them when it matters.

It matters on Veterans Day. It matters every day as the GOP and Trump are moving to cut the VA budget. It matters when Trump misallocates resources to fight a nonexistent military threat of people seeking asylum along the southern border.

If he just could muster the most basic of human emotions it might be a little less horrible. But he’s broken, broken and would never once admit or even consider he might need help. Was he raised by monsters? It seems so. There’s a trail of damage wherever he goes to whatever he touches.

I really hope we find out the extent to which Russia owns him and the rest of the GOP. There really does need to be an autopsy of sorts, because I think we need a history of how this happened and who was responsible and all those guilty need to be in prison. Of course the odds of this happening are close to nada, but it’s my American Dream right now.

It looks as if Trump and Melania arrived by car(?) and perhaps Putin and his entourage did as well, because they were not among the leaders walking to the Arc de Triomphe. Maybe they were meeting alone (??). Anyway, it’s clear Donnie could/did not want to walk that terribly long distance (less than a kilometer, IIRC) with everyone else.

Also, Melania seems to have a phobia about putting her arms in sleeves.

I am sure this one was because of the wind. Since he couldn’t wear his MAGA-hat, his hair would have blown around and people would have made fun of his hair.

This was said by others earlier, of course, including photos of hair blowing around and his head shaved bald, via Photoshop.

What the fuck is in Orange County’s water?

At least they finally kicked Dacha Dana to the curb after 30 years.

I remember when Rohrabacher started in California politics in the late 70s. He was one of the original organizers of the Libertarian Party. He ran Libertarian Ed Clark’s 1978 campaign for California Governor. Clark got almost 6% of the 1978 Governor vote. Rohrabacher was Clark’s manager at the 1979 Libertarian Party convention where he was nominated for President. David Koch was the Vice-Presidential nominee.

Then of course Dana sold out and went into full asskisser mode for President Pruneface.

My wife is cool with not going. She knows that the combination of me with a head cold plus cold weather and probably stiff breezes off the Hudson would probably not be a happy day for anybody.

I think one of the things that’s truly frustrating Trump is that, for all the might of the United States - economic, military, cultural - the other world leaders won’t just stop what they are doing and pay attention to him. I think his flyover and hiding in the hotel is a tantrum to get everyone to look at him.

Our view of history is always colored. Ask an American how the allies won WWII and they’ll say it’s because we beat the Germans. Ask a Russian, and they’ll say it was because of them. Ask the Brits, ask the French…

But yeah, the Iraq war build up was a shit show, made even worse with hindsight.

it was because of the Russians. They managed to grind up millions of Germans and tons and tons of materiel that would otherwise have been holding the beaches at Normandy, and elsewhere.

Nice Diary at Daily Kos by an ex-Marine pointing out that 1) Trump’s no-show at the Belleau Wood ceremony is a YUUUGE insult to the Marine Corps; 2) Our Moron-in-Chief probably won’t (and never would) recognize it as such; and 3) the media will probably never realize or appreciate points 1) and 2).

Also: the diarist calls bullshit on the “weather” excuse for Trump not attending: he points out that the Marine aviators who the Presidential helicopter crew are trained to land their craft on the pitching decks of warships, at all hours and in all weather conditions. Landing on a flat French lawn in a drizzle should NOT have been much of a challenge.

I keep saying this… in the modern era, no sitting president has been defeated via primary (the closest we came was Johnson in 1968, and that was still an older nominating process). However, no sitting president who has been challenged in the primary for his renomination has won the general election.

If he runs, Trump will be the nominee in 2020. And he will run, because he’s too vain to think he couldn’t win again (and he will think he has the traditional advantages of incumbency [narrator: he won’t]).

Their only hope to be rid of Trump is the same hope the rest of us have: Mueller (or now the House) comes back with real evidence of criminal malfeasance [narrator: there is so much], and they sign off on impeachment. This won’t be play out like Nixon, Trump doesn’t give a fuck about the office, the constitution, or the country, he will fight to the bitter end, it will have to be impeachment, conviction, removal from office, and barring from future office.

Thinking about this Trump no-show, it is sort of the polar opposite of Reagan meeting Gorbachev. Reagan, age 75 at that point, met Gorbachev outside - in Reykjavik in October - not wearing a coat. In a diplomatic setting, there’s symbolism in everything, Reagan’s action then, and Trump’s action now, tell two very different stories of who and what America is.

Yeah: nice concept, but the real-life problem which an impeachment will bring up - and right in our faces - is the fact that a non-trivial segment of the public also DOES NOT GIVE A FUCK about the office, the constitution, or the country; and are going to 1) ignore or dismiss even the most incontrovertible evidence of “criminal malfeasance” as “fake news; 2) support Donald Trump under ANY circumstances imaginable and 3) likely not shirk at any act of violence to keep him in office.

At least Kasich is someone who will be outside of Congress and can differeniate himself. If someone challenges Trump, it will be a governor or someone not in Congress anymore and someone that wasn’t in Congress while he was President like Ryan.

Romney

If Romney believed in anything other than the idea that he should be president, he probably wouldn’t be a terrible candidate. But he changes his positions more often than most change their underwear. He is inauthentic, and if we have learned anything in the last 30 years, it’s that American voters want someone who is authentic to themselves. But I’m not sure the establishment of either major party has actually learned that just yet.

We will remove him November, 2020, with police in January if we have to. The election we just saw is the beginning of what’s coming for him and other Republicans.

IOW, the problem isn’t Trump, it’s *us* (broadly defined)

Yeah that definitely would take any votes. Even before his potential join with McCain, Lieberman really wasn’t popular with Democratic voters. He in fact had lost his 2006 primary to now Governor Ned Lamont. Lieberman I think really alienated a lot of Dem voters and Lieberman and Kasich would be a pretty old ticket. I think the only people that would appeal to would be the punditry who would try to make them out to be “How things used to be” or some crap narrative like that but I can’t imagine them appealing to key Dem constituencies. I do hope Kasich primaries Trump though so Trump has Kasich to worry about rather than the Dems and it will have him focusing most of his venom Kasich’s way rather than the Dems and the Trump base will be too busy hating on Kasich to learn to obsessively hate the Dem nominee.

Maybe: but I’m sure some of his “advisors” will be quick to convince him that any CA GOPers ‘fleeing fires” are likely doing so because socialistic sanctuary-city liberals got their illegal-alien henchmen to set fires in Republican areas, so that the State can seize their “abandoned” property, give it to the illegals, and register them as “property owners” (and Democratic voters, naturally)….

Note: satire: though I wouldn’t be surprised to see this “theory” presented on some RWNJ blog as “serious news”…..

A day after Trump was criticized for skipping a trip to an American cemetery due to inclement weather, the president spoke at a different US cemetery in the rain, and expressed jealousy that some of the veterans in the audience were seated under cover.

“You look so comfortable up there. Under shelter. As we’re getting drenched,” Trump told a World War II vet. “You’re really smart people.”

I don’t tend to agree with Egberto Williams posts at DK a lot, because they tend to be way more populist than I like, but I agree with him that Tuesday was a huge win for Democrats, and we shouldn’t let the right set the narrative that it was a loss:

[O]n my drive home I had a sinking feeling. We just had a huge win. Yet because of how much was being characterized but the traditional mainstream media, it was as if we missed our target. We did not. Our target was to win the House of Representatives and local races. Anything else was icing on the cake.

Here’s a big freakin’ deal in Texas I had not heard: “Texas Democrats swept the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 13th, and 14th Court of Appeals. We flipped the 3rd and 14th courts, ushering a new era of fairness and justice in Texas.”

Responsibilities of the County Judge in Texas:

Presiding officer of the commissioners court.
Represents the county in many administrative functions.
Serves as budget officer in counties with fewer than 225,000 residents.
Most have broad judicial duties, such as presiding over misdemeanor criminal and small civil cases, probate matters and appeals from the Justice of the Peace Court.
Serves as head of emergency management.

Alrighty then. There I was, thinking there was no way Hyde-Smith (if nothing else, by virtue of being female) could have something as repulsive as Roy Moore’s peccadilloes in her past, but she just might have conjured up an equivalent in the present o_O

So, repost, for those who have $$$ to spare:

Mississippi’s population (last I read) is around ~40% African-American.

Is the Kipling poem why the Brits were known as Tommies or did he use that nickname for his poem? Have to say even though he was an imperialism apologist, Kipling’s writing about war is good writing.

I think “Tommy Atkins” was a popular generic name for British soldiers before Kipling’s time (sort of like “G I Joe”): but IIRC, it was generalized by the time of The Great War (and later, it was also common in WWII, I believe).
And a concise depiction of the general attitude of the “British Public” towards the common soldiery of the Empire (officers/”gentlemen” were another matter).

Ah okay. Wasn’t sure. I actually wrote a short story from the perspective of a disillusioned British junior officer in WWI when I took creative writing. I prefer third person but I was feeling experimental and I took the class after already getting my BA so I felt I had nothing to lose.

The Cleveland Browns won today against the Atlanta Falcons and did it all on their own with killer defense and solid offense. They looked like a legit NFL team and getting better.

Sorry for the sports…but it has been a long time to see light at the end of the long tunnel where Brown’s fans reside. It feels good.

You do realize that if the Browns win a superbowl we will get someone worse than Trump? That’s why I blame the Cubs for Trump.

I know I got CL’d (i don’t know what that stands for), but I agree with your comment.

I served with right wing person at our election polling place. Every veteran got the, “Thanks for your service. I value my freedom.” mantra. There was no heart in the comment, just the thin veil of “i am a patriot ….!!1!!”.

From Wiki:

Tommy Atkins or Thomas Atkins has been used as a generic name for a common British soldier for many years. The origin of the term is a subject of debate, but it is known to have been used as early as 1743. A letter sent from Jamaica about a mutiny amongst the troops says “except for those from N. America ye Marines and Tommy Atkins behaved splendidly”
