Some More News: America’s Elections, Trump’s Press Abuse, Tucker Carlson’s Protest Lies, and More [VIDEO]

Covering the day after the midterm elections means talking about election results, the president deciding to be a huge jackass to everybody and then banning a journalist, the president forcing his Attorney General to resign in order to further obstruct justice, a mass shooting, an enormous forest fire, and a white nationalist propagandist lying about protesters at his home. It was… a day.

All the wine comments in the last thread, I just have to toss this in. Do not forget fly-over country you damn uppity coastal people.

Lake Erie region and even other parts of Ohio have been making good wines for some time.

There is even the native Catawba grape.

By the way, I’m not much of a wine lover…but those I know say Ohio wines are pretty damn good.

vinepair.com - AMERICA’S FIRST FAMOUS WINE WAS MADE IN OHIO. IN THE 1840S

Among things you didn’t know about Ohio: it’s the first city in the states to have police cars. It has an alley dedicated to Dave Grohl. And it’s the birthplace of Teri Garr, Stephen Spielberg, and Charles Manson.

It’s also America’s first successful wine-making region. California may dominate these days, and they may have won the 1976 Judgment of Paris (basically slapping the beret right off France’s very regal-looking face), but Ohio was the first American state to gain international wine street cred—in a typically unlikely American fashion.

So next time you veer right to the California section of your wine store, just remember, the Father of the American Wine Industry was a kid from Newark, living the dream in Ohio.

“There grows no vine
By the haunted Rhine,
By Danube or Guadalquivir,
Nor on island or cape,
That bears such a grape
As grows by the Beautiful River.”

- from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Ode to Catawba Wine”

What is this latest “White House deserves respect” crap?

This is something else Trump broke. It used to be that even if you didn’t respect the person holding the office, you could respect the office as an institution. But Trump has so thoroughly damaged the office as an institution, it’s hard to even do that.

I saw some videos of people in both locations worried about rising costs of housing and displacement.

lawhawk  Nov 13, 2018 • 11:59:41am

re: #8 KGxvi

Cities and states were flinging billions to a company worth a trillion dollars - so they could avoid paying taxes for decades to come all for the benefit of siting a major facility there for a period of time. NY/NYC would be spending roughly $48,000 per job assuming 20,000 jobs were actually being created.

All the while, the company adds to the strain on infrastructure, including mass transit, where $1.5 billion could help get to a state of good repair.

So yeah, people are pissed. They’re also scared that they’ll be priced out of the area and have no where else to go. They’re worried that the jobs wont go to those already living in the community, but to folks from elsewhere.

re: #19 ObserverArt

Newark NJ was in the final running as well, and the city/state were throwing nearly $6 billion to land it (assuming single HQ). That’s bugnuts insanity given the needs to the rest of the state.

$6 billion could build out a 5 track Portal Bridge, which suffered problems last week, and had a tugboat hit one of the support structures this morning, causing massive delays across the NEC. That obsolete infrastructure services more than 450 trains every day. Those trains carry ~800 people each. So yeah, we’re talking 360,000 every single day.

The economic impact of that single improvement project would have benefits across entire region. Instead, everyone wants to line the pockets of a company already worth a trillion dollars.

I get it though - everyone wants to show that they’re for creating jobs.

Too bad the economic development incentives from these never get repaid (that’s the point - states forgo the tax revenues, and don’t care because the politicians got the “jobs”, which often never get created to the extent and states fail to provide sufficient clawback provisions when the companies fail to create jobs promised).

True. Honeymooning in Niagara Falls some years back*, we went exploring the hinterland, and found this place: Inniskilling Winery: where the nice folks (Canadian, what would one expect?) explained that their land was in a sheltered microclimate zone that enabled them to grow numerous cold-weather-tolerant varieties of grapes. Though they did admit that one of their specialties, eiswein (wine concentrated by freezing) was NOT frozen on the vine….

Hey, let’s get some cash strapped cities to spend a half a billion dollars to build a sports stadium/arena that is used only a handful of days a year so a billionaire owner can have a swanky new facility with more skyboxes and luxury seating and not have to share with anyone else, including the localities on gate/receipts, etc.

Today, we gathered for Diwali, a holiday observed by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains throughout the United States & around the world. Hundreds of millions of people have gathered with family & friends to light the Diya and to mark the beginning of a New Year.

They omitted Hindus (which would have been easily corrected by a wiki search).

They fail at everything they do.

Something else for SoCal residents to worry about - the wildfires have burned thousands of acres in an area previously used for a nuclear research facility, and home to one of the nation’s worst nuclear accidents few actually knew about.

Santa Susana hosted other sensitive projects, which in turn left their own more-public toxic legacies. Three other main areas of the lab were devoted to rocket testing, which polluted the land and groundwater with the toxic rocket fuel oxidizer perchlorate and the engine solvent trichloroethylene. Perchlorate has been found in water wells circling the site, including in adjacent Simi Valley.

There are varying estimates of the amount of TCE in Rocketdyne’s groundwater from tens of thousands of rocket tests at the lab. Boeing’s groundwater remediation system, which consists of “air-stripping” towers that allow the TCE to evaporate into the open air, removed 10 gallons of the toxic goo from the water annually.

“Since acquiring our site in 1996, Boeing has made significant progress in our cleanup efforts,” Boeing spokesperson Kamara Sams said recently, although the company turned off the water-purifying system in 2001.

Meanwhile, the SRE was but one of 10 nuclear reactors at the site, plus a “hot lab” to cut apart and work on nuclear fuel for Santa Susana, Department of Energy and the Atomic Energy Commission facilities from around the country. The site also hosted a plutonium fabrication fuel facility which Dan Hirsch, president of the nonprofit anti-nuclear group the Committee to Bridge the Gap, called “perhaps the most dangerous facility they had on the property.”

Hirsch, who has been a key figure in investigating and publicizing the 1959 nuclear accident, said there also had been serious accidents in at least three of the other SSFL reactors, plus “numerous nuclear fires and spills and releases.”

And there were other dangerous practices on the site. “They had a sodium burn pit where they took radioactively contaminated components and illegally burned them in open pits in the open air,” Hirsch said.

There’s been little transparency about the 1959 accident, and officials are still claiming that there’s no risk.

I’d be wary of claiming no risk, when few are aware of the nature of the accidents, tests, and work done on the site.

Elect a Berner and this is what you get.

This version of the story seems less terrible:

Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) rallied a group of climate-change demonstrators waging a sit-in in Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office Tuesday, an encounter that touched off a display of mutual admiration between the 78-year-old matriarch and the millennial upstart.

Ocasio-Cortez, the self-described democratic socialist who ousted veteran Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) this year, struck a less-confrontational tone in the Capitol than she has on the campaign trail, openly raising the possibility of cooperating with Pelosi should she return to her perch as House speaker in the new Congress.

Sounds like Ocasio-Cortez had business at Pelosi’s office and stopped to speak to the protesters. Which seems like something any smart politician would do in that position.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is up against a faction of Democrats trying to deprive her of the 218 votes she needs to reclaim the speaker’s gavel. And Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) is facing a challenge from Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) for majority whip, although Clyburn is favored to win.

…and also this:

The letter highlights Hoyer’s role as a surrogate and fundraiser during the 2018 cycle — unlike Pelosi, Hoyer could campaign for candidates in red districts — and his mentorship of young members and members-elect.

Trump has retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment, according to multiple administration sources.

“He’s furious,” said one administration official. “Most staffers are trying to avoid him.”

He seems to be tempermentally well suited for the job. Also, JFC:

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, who are close allies, “seem to be on their way out,” the official said, noting recent leaks on the subject. The official cautioned, however, that personnel decisions are never final until Trump himself tweets out the news — often just after the former reality TV star who’s famous for saying “You’re fired!” has directed Kelly to so inform the individual.

I would request that Pelosi at least be made a chair of a committee or the whip (as she is an amazing vote counter for the caucus).

whether he’s actually got the votes or not

this would last about 3 seconds. the R’s would waste no time and be all over him
they’d paint him exactly the same way they did her, or invent something

The role that the Majority Leader plays in the House depends on the Speaker. Hastert and Gingrich delegated a lot of duties to DeLay and Armey. Pelosi was apparently more hands on. So basically, it’s like the Vice President

I suspect what will happen is that a lot of the folks who talked about not supporting Pelosi will vote for someone else in the caucus meeting, and then if she’s the nominee for Speaker, they’ll vote for her. It allows them to have it both ways, and it’s highly unlikely any of them will be punished by voters for that move.

Yeah that’s fine, but several of them have vowed to vote against her on the floor if they lose the caucus vote. That shit is inexcusable.

Eight sitting lawmakers or their offices said on Thursday that they will oppose Pelosi on the floor. Two candidates who won on Tuesday previously said the same.

Meanwhile, the anti-Pelosi faction — whom some have dubbed the “revolutionaries” or the “rebels” — are working to grow their numbers. Eight of them joined an hour-long conference call Wednesday night to discuss strategy and messaging. They’ve divvied up the names of just-elected candidates who have called for “new leadership” and are reaching out to encourage them to vote against Pelosi on the floor.

The eight lawmakers or offices who have confirmed to POLITICO that they intend to vote against Pelosi on the floor are Democratic Reps. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, who organized the Wednesday night call, Kathleen Rice of New York, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Bill Foster of Illinois, Tim Ryan of Ohio, Filemon Vela of Texas, Kurt Schrader of Oregon and Rep. Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania.

The campaigns of Reps.-Elect Abigail Spanberger and Jason Crow have told POLITICO their bosses won’t vote for her on the floor.

Not a bit surprised at Ryan or Moulton (members of the he-man woman-haters club), disappointed in Lamb and Spanberger—don’t know anything much about the others.

He’s a mini-Trump:

“…The letter informed Whitaker that the city was terminating the loan agreement and gave him 30 days to pay back $151,620 that he had been advanced. It noted that the city had to complete the work by the end of 2016 or repay HUD, and that it did not have confidence Whitaker’s company was up to that task.

Whitaker did not reply to the city’s notice. His lender, Lincoln Savings Bank, soon declared Whitaker’s company in default after he ignored demands to pay back a mortgage that had ballooned to $687,000, records show. The bank initiated foreclosure proceedings on the property in July 2016, seeking to be paid back ahead of the city and contractors.

The contractors included an electrician who filed a lawsuit seeking to collect more than $14,000 in unpaid invoices. A process server said in a court filing that repeated visits to three addresses listed for Whitaker’s company and his law firm turned up nothing other than dark, locked offices. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed after both Whitaker and the contractor failed to show up to a scheduled court hearing that had been announced in the newspaper.

Elections aren’t supposed to be “fun.” Must be nice to live in the Fox safe space where your life isn’t impacted by who’s in charge.

Elections are supposed to be called by midnight the day of the election according to Trump. If the Republican is winning, that is.

Well, if we implemented common sense voting reforms, this might actually happen. The problem is, that would actually ENABLE people to vote, and dear White American Jesus, we can’t have that.

When you’re very rich, “foreign policy” doesn’t matter anymore because:
1) it’s not your children who will die in war;
2) there’s money to be made in wars.

3) you can always immigrate to someplace the war is effecting

The truth is, when you’re very wealthy, foreign policy matters only so far as it affects the bottom line.

(I can never remember whether it’s effect or affect)

Ashley Judd grew up in Kentucky, graduated from the University of Kentucky, and she’s one of the leading MeToo cases (with a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein currently in process).

And if anybody tries to “celebrities should stay in their lane,” she also has master’s degree in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

She might as well run; its not like any of the politicians have had any luck beating Mitch over the last 34 years.

Watching hours of that every day would destabilize anyone

I think that’s a very real problem. If you’re looking for stuff that will reinforce your ugly belief system, and expose yourself to it for a significant amount of time, you’re going to come out the other end as a really grotesque creature. And this grotesquerie is in the Oval Office.

This paragraph describes where the Red Hats are now -

Trump and a lot of the people in his thrall are, it seems safe to say, gone. They will continue to walk among us—Trump will be in a golf cart—but they will never come back. They are somewhere else. There is nothing they are not prepared to believe if the right people say it; they will choose the right lie over any truth not just without regret but with pride.

And Trump is among them. He’s getting suckered by Fox every bit as much as the rubes who worship him.

They usually justify it with the fact that Bernie’s “new and fresh” which honestly is bs. He’s been in Washington in fact longer than DiFi and Clinton and only three years less than Nancy. But you’re right. There is a bunch of sexist double standards at play that Sanders gets away with. It’s not his fault directly for that obviously but it does annoy me that no one talks about how Bernie should step aside even though he’d be 80 the year he would be inaugurated. The reason why Bernie’s not part of the hated establishment is because Bernie doesn’t get shit done. Pelosi, Clinton, and DiFi are doers. I can see the Berners are already turning their ire on the new generation of Dem women though. They hate Kamala especially.

FWIW I’m actually fine with Bernie running again because I want to see some of the new car paint come off his smell with the people who thought he could do no wrong. Let them find out from other Democrats that Bernie got Steve King’s praise on immigration. That shit bothers me far more than HRC speaking to Goldman Sachs.

Why is it that calls for younger leaders to come forward in the Democratic party (which is generally a good thing) always seem to come at the expense of leading (D) women (Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein)?

Meanwhile Bernie Sanders is as old as anyone else in the DC gerontocracy, with nary a peep about his age.

Because Bernie is only leading two things: Jack and Shit. It doesn’t help that he’s effectively reached a Faustian deal with the VT DNC: Keep letting him run virtually unopposed so as not to split the blue vote and he promises to caucus with them in the Senate. Thus he gets to keep portraying himself as an “independent” and the DNC keeps the seat out of GOP hands.

I wonder what Pat Leahy thinks of Bernie off the record. The stuff I read from the Vermont NAACP about Bernie was another red flag but then again Bernie sees the NAACP, PP, and other groups like that as “the establishment.” In a way, I appreciate Bernie though for showing me that I can dislike someone who on paper I may have more agreement than I don’t. It really also explains why Donny is so focused on the recounts, to the point of threatening federal action to “protect the vote.” Every loss Tuesday night was not a loss simply for the party, it was an insult to his ego and (in a lot of ways) an even bigger upset for him than Obama because of the state of the economy.

When the DNC suffered under the wave election of ‘10, Obama was grilled by the press and accepted that it had been devastating for his side.

Trump so far has tried to pretend that he “won” something by not losing the Senate, such that every loss there in post-Election Night counting only furthers his humiliation.

Florida is our window into how he’ll handle losing reelection, assuming he still chooses to run. Personally, I’m still of the opinion he hangs it up before 2020, choosing to go out a “winner” rather than suffer the final ignominy of losing reelection. Perhaps it’ll also be as part of a backroom deal to avoid facing any federal prosecution upon leaving office.

If the Evangelical big name preacher types realize Trump isn’t going to be the help they thought, they will stop talking about him and they will pump us some replacement person that is the savior.

And all the little lambs will follow.

It is how they were led to Trump. They sure as hell knew nothing about him in the past.

They got their two scotus judges and cock and bull about God. They won’t turn on him. Falwell, Graham, & others are crooked as hell.

So, remember when the pundits were claiming that the blue wave didn’t happen last week, because the Democrats didn’t do as well as “expected”.

Well, it turns out that the wave was there - and building steadily as the votes were tallied. Election night suggested a wave, but we’re seeing the real wave not only in Congress, but at the local level.

Just because a few high profile Democratic party challengers didn’t win races didn’t mean Democrats failed. Democrats picked up a bunch of seats elsewhere.

The 22nd Amendment says “elected” not that they can’t rise to the office via succession.

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

They could have Obama serve as SOTH and be elevated to POTUS through the order of succession.

I’ve seen people ask why there were protests outside Pelosi’s office. The answer is that it’s easier to change the mind of someone close to you than someone who doesn’t agree at all.

The world knew. Too many here didn’t care.

I’ve said this before. Desperate people read into Trump’s words what they wanted to hear. He was non descript in his stump speeches. People read he was pro-healthcare, pro- Medicare and SocSec. He was a blank slate that people put their hopes into.

What the biggest takeaway is, at least as I see it, (Republican) policies are bad for people and they want change. They want to believe promises but don’t realize that government change is really, really slow. And they’ve heard promises for years with no changes that help them. They don’t really pay attention or they buy the bullshit.

Either way, they need change and some of that change will literally never happen. Coal isn’t coming back. Small towns are not miraculously going to become powerhouses with employers fighting for employees.

I have no idea how to overcome the fact that people refuse to accept reality. So they vote for who promises the most. Trump did that with meaningless words that were lies and where people applied their own sufferings to his empty promises.

All that to say that it won’t change and Democrats need to realize how to address those people’s sufferings.

Right, that’s why I wouldn’t want Obama as Speaker. Besides it’s not like Nancy is incapable of being Speaker and with respect to President Obama, Nancy’s better at it. She’s actually been Speaker before and done a good job. I don’t mind shit turning out to piss off the Republicans but I don’t want a prolonged court battle simply to Po the Cons.

So I’ve been perusing Zillow for some unknown reason, and looking at houses for sale I am reminded once again how bad the 1970’s were.

The downward spiral in housing design and construction really started in the 1960’s as the demand for housing shot up, but it was the 1970’s when we saw the ascension of pretension.

And the flippers do their cheap remodels but often it only makes things worse.

For example, so many of these houses have low ceilings, not even 9’. The flippers install cheap ceiling fan/light combos that then drop another couple of feet. I marvel at the stupidity.

And for the photos for the properties, the flippers bring in rental furniture… that are about two sizes too big for the rooms, leaving barely enough space to move around.

And so on.
