All the wine comments in the last thread, I just have to toss this in. Do not forget fly-over country you damn uppity coastal people.

Lake Erie region and even other parts of Ohio have been making good wines for some time.

There is even the native Catawba grape.

By the way, I’m not much of a wine lover…but those I know say Ohio wines are pretty damn good.

Columbus was in the running, but we do already have two Amazon fulfillment centers/warehouses here, along with some offices and an Amazon store downtown.

Cities and states were flinging billions to a company worth a trillion dollars - so they could avoid paying taxes for decades to come all for the benefit of siting a major facility there for a period of time. NY/NYC would be spending roughly $48,000 per job assuming 20,000 jobs were actually being created.

All the while, the company adds to the strain on infrastructure, including mass transit, where $1.5 billion could help get to a state of good repair.

So yeah, people are pissed. They’re also scared that they’ll be priced out of the area and have no where else to go. They’re worried that the jobs wont go to those already living in the community, but to folks from elsewhere.

Newark NJ was in the final running as well, and the city/state were throwing nearly $6 billion to land it (assuming single HQ). That’s bugnuts insanity given the needs to the rest of the state.

$6 billion could build out a 5 track Portal Bridge, which suffered problems last week, and had a tugboat hit one of the support structures this morning, causing massive delays across the NEC. That obsolete infrastructure services more than 450 trains every day. Those trains carry ~800 people each. So yeah, we’re talking 360,000 every single day.

The economic impact of that single improvement project would have benefits across entire region. Instead, everyone wants to line the pockets of a company already worth a trillion dollars.

I get it though - everyone wants to show that they’re for creating jobs.

Too bad the economic development incentives from these never get repaid (that’s the point - states forgo the tax revenues, and don’t care because the politicians got the “jobs”, which often never get created to the extent and states fail to provide sufficient clawback provisions when the companies fail to create jobs promised).

Honeymooning in Niagara Falls some years back*, we went exploring the hinterland, and found this place: Inniskilling Winery: where the nice folks (Canadian, what would one expect?) explained that their land was in a sheltered microclimate zone that enabled them to grow numerous cold-weather-tolerant varieties of grapes. Though they did admit that one of their specialties, eiswein (wine concentrated by freezing) was NOT frozen on the vine….

Having lived in Santa Fe for 15 years, and Denver for 3, I know about the NM (and Colorado western slope) wine regions and festivals and such. Having moved to Washington last year, I’m only vaguely aware of the wine scene up here on the Puget. My wife and I have dived headlong in to the local food and herb scene first. Mushrooms, lavender, ganja, blackberries, shellfish, seafood. Oh my!

Something else for SoCal residents to worry about - the wildfires have burned thousands of acres in an area previously used for a nuclear research facility, and home to one of the nation’s worst nuclear accidents few actually knew about.

Santa Susana hosted other sensitive projects, which in turn left their own more-public toxic legacies. Three other main areas of the lab were devoted to rocket testing, which polluted the land and groundwater with the toxic rocket fuel oxidizer perchlorate and the engine solvent trichloroethylene. Perchlorate has been found in water wells circling the site, including in adjacent Simi Valley.

There are varying estimates of the amount of TCE in Rocketdyne’s groundwater from tens of thousands of rocket tests at the lab. Boeing’s groundwater remediation system, which consists of “air-stripping” towers that allow the TCE to evaporate into the open air, removed 10 gallons of the toxic goo from the water annually.

“Since acquiring our site in 1996, Boeing has made significant progress in our cleanup efforts,” Boeing spokesperson Kamara Sams said recently, although the company turned off the water-purifying system in 2001.

Meanwhile, the SRE was but one of 10 nuclear reactors at the site, plus a “hot lab” to cut apart and work on nuclear fuel for Santa Susana, Department of Energy and the Atomic Energy Commission facilities from around the country. The site also hosted a plutonium fabrication fuel facility which Dan Hirsch, president of the nonprofit anti-nuclear group the Committee to Bridge the Gap, called “perhaps the most dangerous facility they had on the property.”

Hirsch, who has been a key figure in investigating and publicizing the 1959 nuclear accident, said there also had been serious accidents in at least three of the other SSFL reactors, plus “numerous nuclear fires and spills and releases.”

And there were other dangerous practices on the site. “They had a sodium burn pit where they took radioactively contaminated components and illegally burned them in open pits in the open air,” Hirsch said.

There’s been little transparency about the 1959 accident, and officials are still claiming that there’s no risk.

I’d be wary of claiming no risk, when few are aware of the nature of the accidents, tests, and work done on the site.

The role that the Majority Leader plays in the House depends on the Speaker. Hastert and Gingrich delegated a lot of duties to DeLay and Armey. Pelosi was apparently more hands on. So basically, it’s like the Vice President

But if we can’t win with a candidate like McGrath, in a Democratic wave year, I don’t know when we are going to win. it will be hard to recruit another candidate of her caliber when it seems like a lost cause. Florida is our window into how he’ll handle losing reelection, assuming he still chooses to run. Personally, I’m still of the opinion he hangs it up before 2020, choosing to go out a “winner” rather than suffer the final ignominy of losing reelection. Well, it turns out that the wave was there - and building steadily as the votes were tallied. Election night suggested a wave, but we’re seeing the real wave not only in Congress, but at the local level.

Just because a few high profile Democratic party challengers didn’t win races didn’t mean Democrats failed. Democrats picked up a bunch of seats elsewhere.

Good deal. Cambria’s gone blood red in recent years :(. My great grandfathers must be flipping in their graves. Like your Grandpa, they were union men- UMWA. My other grandparents were from Allegheny in the city of Pittsburgh itself which has remained true and blue.

I’ve said this before. Desperate people read into Trump’s words what they wanted to hear. He was non descript in his stump speeches. People read he was pro-healthcare, pro- Medicare and SocSec. He was a blank slate that people put their hopes into.

What the biggest takeaway is, at least as I see it, (Republican) policies are bad for people and they want change. They want to believe promises but don’t realize that government change is really, really slow. And they’ve heard promises for years with no changes that help them. They don’t really pay attention or they buy the bullshit.

Either way, they need change and some of that change will literally never happen. Coal isn’t coming back. Small towns are not miraculously going to become powerhouses with employers fighting for employees.

I have no idea how to overcome the fact that people refuse to accept reality. So they vote for who promises the most. Trump did that with meaningless words that were lies and where people applied their own sufferings to his empty promises.

All that to say that it won’t change and Democrats need to realize how to address those people’s sufferings.

Right, that’s why I wouldn’t want Obama as Speaker. Besides it’s not like Nancy is incapable of being Speaker and with respect to President Obama, Nancy’s better at it. So I’ve been perusing Zillow for some unknown reason, and looking at houses for sale I am reminded once again how bad the 1970’s were.

The downward spiral in housing design and construction really started in the 1960’s as the demand for housing shot up, but it was the 1970’s when we saw the ascension of pretension.

And the flippers do their cheap remodels but often it only makes things worse.

For example, so many of these houses have low ceilings, not even 9’. The flippers install cheap ceiling fan/light combos that then drop another couple of feet. I marvel at the stupidity.

And for the photos for the properties, the flippers bring in rental furniture… that are about two sizes too big for the rooms, leaving barely enough space to move around.

And so on.

Golden age of the cookie cutter sports stadium though they were all multi-purpose and probably more practical than a lot of the more modern stadiums that are only one use mostly but these modern stadiums may last longer too.
