(damn it, CL’d downstairs just as I was posing… so a repeat of tonight’s curmudgeonly rant:)

So I’ve been perusing Zillow for some unknown reason, and looking at houses for sale I am reminded once again how bad the 1970’s were.

The downward spiral in housing design and construction really started in the 1960’s as the demand for housing shot up, but it was the 1970’s when we saw the ascension of pretension.

And the flippers do their cheap remodels but often it only makes things worse.

For example, so many of these houses have low ceilings, not even 9’. The flippers install cheap ceiling fan/light combos that then drop another couple of feet. I marvel at the stupidity.

And for the photos for the properties, the flippers bring in rental furniture… that are about two sizes too big for the rooms, leaving barely enough space to move around.

And so on.

Yup. And then drop in a ceiling fan with light and… I hit my head as I walk under it, or at least hit the draw string.

Fans are counterproductive anyway. The do not cool a room, but they do move the dust around.

The one’s I’ve installed only extend about 18 inches down, and the blades are only about a foot at the ends. If you’re really tall, you’d probably have issues.

Years ago, at a family party, I observed a parent lifting his child up and suddenly realizing that he was putting his child in the path of a ceiling fan. It was such a close call. Fortunately no one was injured and he quickly moved away.

Mom and Dad bought their house in 1956 for $8,000.

Wells Fargo seized the house after Dad died because he owed around $185K in debt. Wells kept lending him more and more money. They even forced Dad to get an HUD home improvement loan in the amount of $25K.

Wells wound up with a big write-off when the house was sold at auction for $68K to a flipper.

The flipper went in and completely renovated the house, put it on the market for $200K. in 2003.

Now it has gone back on the market for $350K.

For a house originally built in 1824…

With at least two still out here in western NY that could tip two more R incumbents out. The counting continues in the Nate McMurray race against Chris Collins (R-Indicted) in the 27th, with McMurray still a smidge behind, and in the Anthony Brindisi race against Claudia Tenney (R-acist) in the 22nd, with Brindisi still ahead.

By the New Republican Rules as promulgated today, since Tenney was behind in the count at midnight last Tuesday, she lost and should go away…. right?!??

My son showed me the new Pokemon movie trailer, Detective Pikachu. It’s actually based on a game with the same name. He said the voice of Pikachu in the game is lower, but the introductory plot is just the same: Your dad’s died, and you end up with a Pikachu that you can actually understand solving crimes. My son loves that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is voicing Pikachu.

The house next door to ours is for sale, and my wife keeps an eye on what’s being bought and sold in the neighborhood so she looked up the listing.

It had one curbside shot of the house posted six times.

Agree. But we should be prepared to have any (still less all) of these proposed laws declared DOA upon presentation in the Senate. Republicans know that statutory checks on their ability to manipulate elections to their advantage will be the death-knell for their Party in a lot of the country. I’d be surprised if McConnell would even let any of these acts even get into Committee.

piratedan  Nov 13, 2018 • 9:42:03pm

been reading lots about the normal twitter traffic for the usual RW POV has been going dark… to my knowledge, it appears that Drudge, Faux, and quite a few of the RW “trendsetters” have been dark the last few days and there was also that earlier meeting between Senator McConnell and Rupert himself that took place… for me it kind of implies a sliding scale of what could be coming…..

More Mueller indictments… the scuttlebutt appears to center around Stone, Corsi and Trump, Jr and perhaps the quiet is the collusion before the storm where everyone has to determine how and what to spin depending upon which shoes drop… and considering how many RW talking points appear to be crafted by Russian FSB folks, I simply would not be shocked by that. What could be of some concern is that if the ratfuckers are gathered up on perjury charges, will that be enough to make them roll over on other matters, say collusion/treason in the coordination of the dissemination of illegally obtained documentation and data, name the DNC hacks and how the GOP/Trump Campaign worked with the Russians to put their money and their data to best use against Democratic candidates.

To my understanding, that’s pretty fucking illegal….

If that is indeed the case, then we could be talking about a whole skein of shit unravelling. while we here on the boards have been speculating about treason, its one of those specific charges that the media hasn’t really delved into yet (curious… not really) but if there are smoking guns and sworn testimony, then we could be looking at the possible unveiling of how the GOP used its propaganda media outlets (Sinclair and Fox) , leveraged other contacts within the MSM (CNN and the NYT) and funded (buying facebook and other social media time for campaign ads) both troll accounts to drive the media narrative outside of their already controlled outlets. If so, then we could be looking at crimes committed by Faux management and talking heads in addition to the GOP leadership itself….

If this is the iceberg that lurks beneath the surface, we could be looking at something that could have an impact on our society and government like no other and if that is indeed the case, I would stock up on popcorn futures…

remember, this is just one man’s idle speculation in the middle of the night but since the MSM is apparently going to play the disinterested observer in all of this and as such, a lot of heinous shit has been going on for quite some time and based on the volume of lies and fabrication that have been thrown at this, I suspect that we’ve really only scratched the surface of the ugliness so far….

again, ymmv

Yep — to show that they are cooperating with the GOP instead of playing partisan politics, the Dems should propose a tax cut for the 1% and major cuts to Social Security and Medicare. That would get GOP support!! Clearly anything to help minorities or the non-wealthy is pure partisan politics.

I wonder what her family background is. Are her parents Democrats, and she is rejecting their values? Or are they farmers accepting government subsidies, and Kaity is oblivious to where the money for subsidies comes from?

But I am not curious enough to waste time trying to find out.

She can read Adam Smith — but not the modern expurgated version of The Wealth of Nations that leaves out all the non-free market stuff.

I stress those aspects of Adam Smith a lot: namely that markets are a mechanism for balancing supply and demand while directing flows of capital to where they are most beneficial, and not some divine Natural Law or end in themselves.

I live just above Cali (like, seven miles) on the coast and it’s been unusually dry this fall. We’re usually well into our monsoon season here by mid-October but here we are in mid-November and we’re dry. Other than a few days of moderate rain last month, nothing since. This time of the year we are normally in the high 50’s during the day and low 40’s at night. Now we are in the mid-60’s during the day (63 yesterday) and mid-40’s at night. One plus of the current weather is that it has allowed the tree guys to come in this fall and remove the monster in our back yard. We ‘got in line’ for the removal almost two years ago and were scheduled for the job next spring, so no complaints here about that!

We need rain and lots of it.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The Latest on Florida’s election recount (all times local):

7:15 a.m.

The Palm Beach County elections supervisor says aging equipment has overheated, causing mismatched results in the recount of ballots in Florida’s U.S. Senate race.

Susan Bucher said Tuesday night that the 11-year-old machines began having problems on Monday as early voting ballots were being counted. When the numbers were crunched on Tuesday, they didn’t match.

WPTV says a mechanic was flown in to fix the issues, but Bucher says “we don’t have a lot of assurances.”

She says the machines “started overheating so as a result the tally types are not reconciling properly.” That means about 174,000 early voting ballots in the state’s third most populous county will have to be recounted.

Workers are working around the clock to count the vote, but Bucher has already said they will not meet the state’s Thursday deadline to report the recounted votes. Nearly 600,000 ballots were cast in the county.

Had one tell me that Pelosi saying “we’re capitalists, deal with it” was tone deaf and I’d love to see the whole context because you know what, I’m tired of lefties pushing the same bullshit that the right does that you have to be a socialist or capitalist. HappyWarrior  Nov 14, 2018 • 6:15:49am

Just posted this: Hopefully people actually read it and don’t see the defense of Pelosi and the Dem establishment as OMG NEO LIB!

I can see that yes. I guess my point is I don’t like seeing someone who was actually the reason why most House Dems voted against the Iraq War resolution being labeled a war monger. I’ve even seen people say she voted for it. I don’t like someone who was on the frontline supporting LGBT rights early on have that dismissed. I’m fine with new leadership I really am. And yeah that does come off as tone deaf but here’s the thing, we are capitalist but we are also socialist. I’m frigging tired of dogmatic socialists and capitalists acting like our economy has to be one or the other. It’s always been a combination of both. Quite simply speaking, we’ve always been some combo of both.

i just think we’re making a mistake if we equate all capitalism with the right wing bs just like it’s a mistake to equate democratic socialism with Stalinism or Maoism. Sorry I just think there’s this tendency to see capitalism as the enemy. The enemy is this bs vision of capitalism that the government can’t be a positive factor in economic development. Economics is a social science about people and I really think ideologues don’t get that. I subscribed to Keynesian theories because Keynes was about observable data whereas the Von Mises kooks dismiss it. I unfortunately see the same thing with some socialists. I also wish people would see that leadership skills aren’t always ideological. There’s a lot of politics that isn’t about ideology that makes people successful leaders. LBJ was far from the most liberal Dem but very successful Congressionally domestically since he had some great skills that a more staunch progressive would have lacked. I’m not saying we should just go with the same slate we did in 06-10 but I think people greatly under appreciate what Pelosi is good at as a legislative leader which one of their favorites may struggle at. I dunno man. It’s just I see myself as a liberal but I’m feeling a bit frustrated because I think there’s a lot of naïveté about how to get true change. Change is a process not an event.

And taken together, it’s exactly the sort of thing to help drive home, to young Berner types, the importance of showing up to vote for people who can actually win.

Someone should remind her the military she probably kissed a lot of ass on Vets Day is courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer which is how it should fucking be. People who argue taxation is theft have failed basic civics. I very much subscribe to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes philosophy- “I like taxes, with them, I buy civilization.” Related but there was a nice letter to the editor today in the Post calling out the absurdity of Kathleen Parker’s latest where she repeated the same tired conservative/libertarian moxie of “More government is less freedom” and the writer, a regular schmo like you or I correctly pointed out how government has been used as a force to expand freedom for many groups. And honestly, that’s how I see government. Government being representative of we the people is how we maintain rights. There are certain rights- the inalienable ones Jefferson spoke of that shouldn’t even be up for debate.

I respect AOC since she put her money where her mouth is and she’s actually lived the economy rather than someone who just heard “democratic socialism” for the first time two years ago when Bernie said it. As OA observed about Brown(haha see what I did there Art!), Sherrod Brown has actually lived the Rust Belt experience and can talk more about than Bernie can since he’s actually lived it.

Learned something absolutely “shocking” this week. Apparently the Illinois state income tax does not apply to retirement income or Social Security. I can understand exempting Social Security — but all retirement income? No tax on IRAs or 401(k)s? In a state that is financially in crisis? I suppose that is one way to keep retirees from relocating to states that don’t have a state income tax.

Well, it certainly benefits me!! Especially since my total retirement income (including Social Security) exceeds my annual salary while working.

He should want to go. The problem is that it’s not about him, and when it isn’t about him, he just doesn’t care. He doesn’t have anyone who tells him what he needs to hear, because he tunes it out. He only listens to what he wants to hear. It’s a Fox echo chamber.

A couple of like minded old hippies are going to embark an adventure. I found one of the needed tools on my neighbors porch. It was her grandfathers. He was the blacksmith in a small E. Texas farming community, Wayback. This tool is prolly over 100 yrs old and she gave me permission to use it as long as I want. (Huge Smiley Face).

Bob and I are in tool gathering mode right now. Then we plan on an outdoor coal forge then build a gas blaster.

I’ve never even welded….. This will be fun.

Can you buy a magazine called “The Backwoodsman” there? It’s a bi-monthly rag on living simple, survivalist & prepper stuff that’s not as nut case as some (they do have a thing for beliving in Bigfoot, but I ignore that idiocy). The current issue has a good article on on how to build a poor man’s forge, talks about fuels, using a hairdrier as a air source and so on.

Of course his staff has to tell him. After all, recall that he did everything possible to lose the nomination — including insulting McCain’s service — and his base rewarded him for this behavior. Why should he believe that skipping these events would harm his image among the deplorable base? He cares only about this base and no one else anyway. Do we know whether his base agrees with him? I had lunch with a “deplorable” friend of mine yesterday and though we did avoid partisan discussions, he made comments about “fake” news. So I wouldn’t be surprised if his base buys his excuses.

Unless they’re using the name Lego, there’s nothing the Lego can do. Building blocks are not under the company’s control. That’s Why Mega Bloks exists. On the other hand, the company that makes Mega Bloks could go after them for having a similar name.

Change is a process not an event.

re: #116 Backwoods_Sleuth

hey Art!

Just saw this when looking up the Shapiro video. DeWine has said this is the most bizarre crime he has ever seen in his (too) long career.

Prosecuting Ohio massacre case could last years

WAVERLY, OH (AP) — Prosecuting an Ohio family of four arrested in the gruesome slayings of eight people from another family could take years to conclude, a county prosecutor said as the first break in the more than two-year-old case was announced.

Tuesday’s announcement marked the culmination of a massive investigative effort that began after seven adults and a teenage boy were found shot in the head at four separate homes in April 2016. The killings terrified local residents and spawned rumors that it was a drug hit, but prosecutors suggested the attack had stemmed from a custody dispute.

The investigation is one of the most complicated and extensive in state history, with enormous numbers of witnesses and a huge amount of evidence, said Pike County Prosecutor Rob Junk.

“There is a lot of hard work ahead of us. I cannot emphasize that enough. An indictment is only the beginning of the case,” Junk said Tuesday, adding that the case may have to be moved from Pike County because of the pre-trial publicity.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said a grand jury indicted the four members of the Wagner family on aggravated murder charges. Police arrested George “Billy” Wagner III, 47; his wife, 48-year-old Angela Wagner; and his sons George Wagner, 27, and Edward “Jake” Wagner, 26. They could be sentenced to death if convicted, DeWine said.

DeWine gave scant detail about why the victims were killed, but said the custody of a young child played a role. Edward Wagner was the long-time former boyfriend of 19-year-old Hanna Rhoden, one of the eight victims, and shared custody of their daughter at the time of the massacre.

OK, I did stop and think about this, and my first takeaway is that Mr. Yelin doesn’t have a good grasp on how the US Senate functions on the partisan level.

That Sen. Schumer was chosen Dem Leader “by acclamation” ought to be one clue: whatever Ben thinks, his fellow Democrats thought enough of his Leadership not to even bother challenging it.

Also, that Chuck’s Leadership “sucks” is highly a matter of opinion. Personally, I can easily see the validity of critiques: Myself, I like Chuck Schumer (he’s my Senator), and think he has done a reasonably good job: but I see him mainly as an “inside guy” - good at the behind-the—scenes gutwork of legislating, but not (like his predecessor Harry Reid was) an out-in-front-of-the-cameras agitator/street-fighter. Which I can see a lot of Dems perhaps preferring. (Me too, FWIW)

The Senate is (AFAIK) a place which runs by its own rules, rules which they usually DNGAF about changing, and where the Majority (as Mitch McConnell has shown us on numerous occasions) can - if they want - run it to suit themselves. How Schumer- or any Minority Leader - can get around the system outside of mere obstructionism is a thorny question.

A lot of people were down on Reid initially too. I don’t mind Schumer. But as you get at, he must be doing something right with those who work with him. One thing that was revealed and I think may have led to the police turning to a domestic/hate type of crime rather than a drug related is the type of over-kill that was done.

Early on they said all the victims were shot in the head. That sounded a bit like a drug hit.

But now they have admitted one victim was shot nine times, and two others five times each. I’m taking that to mean all in the head.

That is not a drug hit, that is pissed off, pay-back passion.

I’m guessing it was the adults that were probably involved in the child custody that were shot that many times.

I can’t imagine what that scene was with that type of over-killing.

For some reason, I am seeing the word “cowards” used to describe the murderers. I wonder what that means?

Oh she earned it.

She kept the Ds together to pass the ACA which has been a huge win for the Dems in the last few elections (despite the crazy misguided fervor on the right). She got regulations passed for the banking industry (which the Rs have decimated). She’s earned it by not forcing the centrist Dems and the liberal Dems into a fight and finding common ground. The reason the RW hate machine targets her is because she actually get results (and not voting for the same thing 100 times achieving nothing).

Lastly her insight in legislation was that it wasn’t a year or a two year plan to keep her hide safe. She went on a decades long plan to make things better for Americans.

Donald Trump, you’re asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words “liberty” and “equal protection of law.”

Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing—and no one

i note two things:

They planned that confrontation to distract from talking about the loss of the House.

This shows that nobody in the White House thinks any further ahead than the end of the news cycle. Sure, it took the focus off the election for a day, but where are we now? They planned that confrontation to distract from talking about the loss of the House.

This shows that nobody in the White House thinks any further ahead than the end of the news cycle. Sure, it took the focus off the election for a day, but where are we now? The Dem win got bigger and people are still talking about it, plus the administration is now in court having to defend what they thought was a fab idea at the time.

Morons.

I would expect more out of a high school student council and class presidents.

Setting up distractions is so childish. But, that is where we are with the Trump government.

Overlooked - but very important:

Israel’s defense minister resigns in a hissy fit because Bibi went with a ceasefire deal to ratchet down the violence following tit-for-tat attacks, and a botched assassination attempt against a Hamas leader that left multiple Palestinians and an IDF agent dead with Hamas launching barrages of rockets and anti-tank fire in response.

Bennett is also signaling that he wants out of the coalition, which means early elections are all but assured, unless Bibi courts the left to fill the vacuum (and I wouldn’t put it past him to try).

Bibi is nothing but an opportunist, and Lieberman (the defense minister) was taking a page from Bibi’s playbook.

Thing is that most Israelis aren’t happy with the current situation re: Gaza, but no one seems to have any answers. Everything is at a stalemate, and Trump’s interventions in the region haven’t made any progress easier - it’s hardened the positions further.

John Bresnahan
@BresPolitico
Mark Meadows is nominating Jim Jordan for House minority leader

1:22 PM - Nov 14, 2018

Of course he is.

Remember that bit earlier where Jordan was said to have ignored the wrestlers at Ohio State regarding the groping sleazy team doctor?

It is still ongoing, though it is focusing on the team doctor that was the abuser. Earlier it was said there were up to 150 student athletes involved. Now, months later it has grown to 330.

The university spent that last part of October interviewing them as it builds its study of what the hell happened.

So, Jordan escaped, but not entirely. This USA today story from last week keeps the heat on. I’ll post the important parts. Full story at the link.

USA Today - With Jim Jordan’s re-election, it’s time to look deeper into Ohio State sex abuse scandal

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, easily won re-election Tuesday night for a seventh term in Congress. Now that he’s done with that, scrutiny should return to his alleged role in failing to stop an Ohio State team doctor from molesting student-athletes when Jordan was an assistant wrestling coach at the school from 1986-94.

Back in the summer, seven former OSU wrestlers accused Jordan of being among the university coaches and faculty members who ignored the sexual abuse of team doctor Richard Strauss, who committed suicide in 2005.

Jordan denied the allegations then, saying, “I never knew about any type of abuse. If I did, I would have done something about it.”

Yet, in a Fox News interview, Jordan did admit that he heard “conversations in a locker room” about the issue.

Michael Alf, who wrestled at Ohio State from 1988-92, said he was part of a conference call with several former OSU wrestlers who have supported Jordan. “We don’t blame Jimmy, but the guys are saying, ‘Jim, why don’t you just tell that you heard about this as it was going along? We know you were young and you didn’t put it together.’”

“I participated with Jimmy (Jordan) and the other wrestlers in locker room talk about Strauss,” former OSU wrestler Shawn Dailey, who said he was groped half a dozen times by Strauss in the mid-1990s, told NBC News. “We all did. It was very common knowledge in the locker room that if you went to Dr. Strauss for anything, you would have to pull your pants down.

“What happened drove me out of the sport,” he added. “So I was surprised to hear Jim say that he knew nothing about it. Jimmy’s a good guy, but to say that he had no knowledge of it, I would say that’s kind of hurtful.”

Mark Coleman, another former OSU wrestler, told The Wall Street Journal that Jordan was aware of the abuse and did not take action.

“There’s no way unless he’s got dementia or something that he’s got no recollection of what was going on at Ohio State,” said Coleman, who said he was Jordan’s roommate on several trips.

Now that Jordan is heading back to Washington, this important story should shadow his every step.

There’s more to the story: his brother committed suicide recently and they may have worked for Pizzagate promoter Jack Posobiec. The whole thing is a doozy.

re: #367 Backwoods_Sleuth

PM May says cabinet agrees on draft agreement for #Brexit after 5 hours of meetings. PM basically saying ‘its this or nothing’ deal.

I’m guessing it’s “nothing”, then, because getting it through Parliament is going to be rough. There are enough remainers who think they can force a new referendum that they’ll win if they vote it down. Then, the Brexiteers will vote against it because it doesn’t have unicorns and sovereignty-shitting magic ponies in it. It is going to be a worse deal than staying in the EU, that is guaranteed.

May tried to be clever and put the main Brexiteers in positions where they were directly responsible for negotiations. They, of course, all quit and began hurling feces from the cheap seats. May should have shut the whole thing down at this point by telling them if they weren’t serious than nobody else was, but nope, she got rooked and now gets to be the scapegoat for failing to do the impossible. But don’t feel sorry for her; she was responsible for a lot of the xenophobic crap the Home Office put out when she was minister.

But it might get through the British Parliament.

In her statement after the cabinet meeting, I noticed PM May slyly included “…or no Brexit” in her words.

What she can do is threaten the hardcore Euroskeptic Tories that she’s gonna pull the plug on Brexit, which is arguably, perhaps their worst nightmare. So she can use that as a cudgel; whether that works or not of course remains to be seen.

Call your elected officials and say NO to Whitaker because he is a trump toadie.

at the moment whitaker wrt mueller doesnt worry me

from my venerable electoral-vote.com just this AM:

With that said, Maryland’s lawsuit does complicate things a bit for the White House. If Trump/Whitaker were to try to stage a Saturday Night Massacre, and to stealthily cashier special counsel Robert Mueller, Maryland AG Brian Frosh (D) would ask for (and presumably receive) an immediate injunction against such action until the state’s lawsuit is resolved. This would thus give Mueller a fair bit of warning that the axe could be coming, and would give Congress the same. In that extra time, Mueller could “finish” his report, or he could make sure to share what he’s got with Congress, or Congress could pass a bill affording him protection. Part of what made the original Massacre viable (not that it saved Nixon in the long run) was that by the time anyone knew about it, the heads had already rolled and the dust had already settled. That kind of speed would now appear to be off the table here
