Question now is, did someone hire “Surefire Intelligence (sic.)” to do this? If they did, I doubt if J-Cob covered his tracks very well.

Isn’t this exactly what he tried against Mueller? I don’t understand how this criminal escaped prison time for his financial fraud.

Speaking of WTF, did you happen to catch this paragraph in that NY Times article Delay, Deny and Deflect: How Facebook’s Leaders Fought Through Crisis?

I’ve been neutral on Schumer, and I know he was just reestablished at the Senate minority leader, but I’m leaning toward thinking the Democrats need someone better.

I admit, I am a Facebook hater too.

In Washington, allies of Facebook, including Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate leader, intervened on its behalf. And Ms. Sandberg wooed or cajoled hostile lawmakers, while trying to dispel Facebook’s reputation as a bastion of Bay Area liberalism.

Just gonna note that California has its own criminal conspiracy statute:

CHAPTER 8. Conspiracy [182 - [185.]] ( Chapter 8 enacted 1872. )

182.
(a) If two or more persons conspire:
(1) To commit any crime.
(2) Falsely and maliciously to indict another for any crime, or to procure another to be charged or arrested for any crime.
(3) Falsely to move or maintain any suit, action, or proceeding.
(4) To cheat and defraud any person of any property, by any means which are in themselves criminal, or to obtain money or property by false pretenses or by false promises with fraudulent intent not to perform those promises.
(5) To commit any act injurious to the public health, to public morals, or to pervert or obstruct justice, or the due administration of the laws.
(6) To commit any crime against the person of the President or Vice President of the United States, the Governor of any state or territory, any United States justice or judge, or the secretary of any of the executive departments of the United States.

A very terrifying argument: it actually asserts that the President can bar any legitimate news organization from covering his activities. They are trying to establish that access can be restricted to a state-run news outlet. Trumpsters are all on board with the idea that any critical press is fake news.

Won’t make a big difference either way. Democrats gained 5 points nationally compared to Clinton’s margin over Trump; if they can nominate a candidate of average popularity in 2020, and Trump doesn’t decide to act like President of the US instead of President of MAGA (hint, he won’t), the Democrat should crush him.

Part of Charlie Pierce’s Five White Guys article is about freaking Tim Ryan OH D13 Rep. Figures. He’s been an ass about Pelosi all along.

I’m posting the meat of the article below. Full article at link.

Esquire - The #FiveWhiteGuys Are Offering a Sucker’s Bet to Anti-Pelosi Democrats

Subhead: There is no need for any of this.

Alas, it is my painful duty to report that the #FiveWhiteGuys are led by Seth Moulton, congresscritter from the Sixth Congressional District here in the Commonwealth (God save it!), and a man who has been farting higher than his own arse ever since he got elected in 2014. Moulton ran a strong campaign. He ousted an endangered incumbent who was all tangled in so much family corruption that a Republican pickup of that seat was a distinct possibility—or, at least, as distinct a possibility as was ever enjoyed by a Massachusetts Republican. Almost immediately, Moulton signed on to the challenge to Pelosi’s leadership mustered up by the anti-charismatic Tim Ryan of Ohio. Almost immediately, and most spectacularly, Moulton began spending a lot of time in Iowa. This is a fellow who thinks a great deal of his own inherent political gifts.

Now, it seems, they’ve gotten the band back together again. The #FiveWhiteGuys are Moulton, Ryan, Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, Kurt Schrader of Oregon, and Bill Foster of Illinois. The driving forces remain Moulton and Ryan, with the latter the putative leader. After an election in which the Democratic Party continues to elect a demographically and politically diverse collection of new House members, Ryan is still insisting that the party needs to “reach out” to angry white men in places like Ohio when, in fact, if the midterms proved anything, it is that the Democratic Party’s future is in places like Arizona and Nevada, and even Georgia and Florida, while, except for Sherrod Brown, god bless him, Ohio is a lost cause. It was an outlier even in its own geographic area. There were Democratic—and progressive—victories in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. Ohio and, yes, Iowa, were loss leaders.

This did not stop Moulton, who declines to challenge Pelosi himself, from spouting off in Roll Call that he and his group have the votes to block Pelosi’s elevation to the speakership on the floor of the House—although, as has now become customary, Moulton declines to provide details on exactly how many members of the House have signed on here.

Ryan simply much like a certain Senator from Vermont does not get that angry white guys aren’t the party’s future. Angry white guys are not the future for the party, they are however a problem for the future of Tim Ryan.

He’s covering his butt in as big a way as he can. It really seems to me he is saying to the people in that part of Ohio he knows they are Pelosi haters (Democrat and even more Republican) and he is too.

If he doesn’t he must think he will get dumped.

Or he is just a dick.

This state has it’s problems. All I can hope is the growth of the urban areas, many coming from the red areas of Ohio, changes their damn thinking about what was to what is and will be.

This state has it’s problems. All I can hope is the growth of the urban areas, many coming from the red areas of Ohio, changes their damn thinking about what was to what is and will be.

Or, enough of the elders die off to open the state to more progressive thinking.

I looked back at my notes from our state convention, where Tim Ryan spoke at the Friday night dinner and the Saturday breakfast. He was dissing Nancy Pelosi and singing the praises of Nina Turner (she was there as well—ugh) so I found two good reasons to dislike him.

Sounds like she wants to halt the counting
Then get to Reexamine the signature matchings
And then get ballots tossed that were already accepted

How would you do that? By the time ballots are counted, they’re permanently, irreversibly separated from anything with a signature on them, right? They are here, for sure. You know, secret ballot?

All of this is on a sliding scale. Just remember, almost no one, even the loons, believe that it’s ok to drink bleach. Some just also realize that shitting in the bed is bad, and some of them realize that holocaust deniers shouldn’t be allowed in public. Eventually, you’ll find something you disagree with, but hopefully, it’s not the kind of thing that gets people killed.

The actual ballots must still be in their envelopes.

The signature and other identification is on the outside. They probably question the signatures and never open the envelope until they are satisfied they match.

Then the ballots are taken out and out and put in the reader machines.

There is no ID on the ballot.

That is how they are in Ohio anyway.

Right, exactly. But this process is (or should be) irreversible. Otherwise they could determine how a specific individual voted, and that’s always been an absolute no-no. (Constitutional law term.)

Scientists have discovered a 19 mile wide impact crater in northwest Greenland and it’s got the Intertubes all abuzz that it might - and I emphasize might - be connected to the Younger Dryas Event.

It’s been hypothesized that the YDE was triggered by an impact event but to date, no impact crater has ever been found that would match up with that timeframe (12900 BP). However, with this new discovery, it’s got speculation about the YDE going again. Of course, it’ll all depend on just when this impact event happened. If the impact crater can be positively dated to 12900 BP (more or less), then maybe the advocates of a catastrophist cause of the Younger Dryas Event were correct.

Some lawmakers in Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party have said they expect at least 48 letters of no confidence will have been submitted by lunchtime on Thursday, ITV reporter Robert Peston said.

A challenge to May is triggered if 15 percent of the parliamentary party, or 48 lawmakers, write letters demanding a confidence vote to the chairman of the party’s “1922 Committee”, which represents lawmakers who have no government jobs.

UK PM Tre: #177 Dr Lizardo

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has resigned, saying he “cannot back” PM May’s Brexit deal.

theguardian.com

Dominic Raab’s resignation later (from his Twitter- very 2018)

For my part, I cannot support the proposed deal for two reasons. First, I believe that the regulatory regime proposed for Northern Ireland presents a very real threat to the integrity of the United Kingdom.

Second, I cannot support an indefinite backstop arrangement, where the EU holds a veto over our ability to exit. The terms of the backstop amount to a hybrid of the EU customs union and single market obligations. No democratic nation has ever signed up to be bound by such an extensive regime, imposed externally without any democratic control over the laws to be applied, nor the ability to decide the exit arrangement. That arrangement is now also taken as the starting point for negotiating the future economic partnership. If we accept that, it will severely prejudice the second phase of negotiations against the UK.

Above all, I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we madd to the country in our manifesto at the last election. This is, at its heart, a matter of public trust.

And, hey presto, down goes the pound against the dollar and euro

If there’s another resignation in 45 minutes or so from this posting, then it’s gonna be a really long day for PM May.

Funny you should say that. It looks like some are expecting Penny Mourdaunt, Minister for Women and Equalities, to resign.

Looks like the deal is going to down like a lead balloon in the House of Commons. There’s no way I can see it getting the votes- so many people from both brexiters and remainers in the Conservative party, to the DUP and the SNP have come out against it.

Yep…and there’s this too:

which is a good point. It’s entirely possible that by later today, PM May will have resigned.

But then again, she’s nothing if not a survivor type.

Didn’t U.K. citizens vote in the affirmative for Brexit like three years ago? Is their political and economic system handling that referendum well? From my very uninformed honkey-ass ski bum point of view, I’d say not.

They voted for a lot of unrealistic, unobtainable or mutually exclusive things and are now distressed to see that those things are unrealistic, unobtainable or mutually exclusive.

They also assumed that EU would give in a lot more to maintain trade relations with the UK sand were shocked to see Europe most unanimously refusing to budge.

And they really thought that they could install Schroedinger’s Hard Border across Ireland.

I don’t think any political system could adequately handle the result of such a “pie in the sky” decision. There was no discussion of what “leaving the EU” actually meant in practise, just a lot of flag waving and posturing. The debate around the referendum- or rather lack of debate- stood in stark contrast to the almost 2 years of very detailed debate leading up to the Scottish independence referendum. (Which looks like it may happen again- Scotland voted 2-1 against leaving the EU.) It almost felt like people were treating like some random by-election in the Midlands.

Of course, it didn’t help that the Conservative government spent the time between the referendum result and now basically adopting the stance of a rabbit in the headlights whilst saying “Everything will be fine!”

208
Alephnaught  Nov 15, 2018 • 2:45:15am

Oh my goodness. From the Guardian live blog:

May says, when she became PM, there was no plan for Brexit.

May implicitly criticises the Cameron government for not having a plan for Brexit.

Some people said it could not be done. She did not accept that, she says.

She says it has been a frustrating process. It has forced the UK to confront difficult issues.

Once a final deal is agreed, she will come to parliament and ask MPs to back it in the national interest.

May says the choice is clear. We can choose to leave with no deal, or have no Brexit at all ….

That generates loud cheering from some MPs.

Or we can choose this deal, says May.

She says she is delivering for the British people and doing what is in the national interest.

What a shitshow.

209
Alephnaught  Nov 15, 2018 • 2:52:03am

BTW Here’s an example of someone who voted for Brexit. Note he does the standard thing of saying “Brexit means Brexit” without defining what Brexit actually means in practise. It’s like saying “Splonge means SPLONGE! Therefore you are compelled to SPLONGE, goddammit!”

Perhaps he can take the English language back as well while he’s at it.

213
Alephnaught  Nov 15, 2018 • 3:15:50am

The DUP is not pleased:

DUP leader Nigel Dodds accuses May for reneging on promises and backing plan that would break up UK

Nigel Dodds, the DUP leader, says he could take May through the promises she made in public, and private, to his party. But it would be a waste of time because “she clearly doesn’t listen”. He says the five people who have resigned today have all said May’s deal would compromise the integrity of the UK. We can either vote to protect the UK. Or vote for a vassal state that will break it up, he says.

May says her commitments to Northern Ireland remain.

She says neither side want to see the backstop exercised.

She says she does not accept that she has not considered Northern Ireland in this process. (Dodds signals to her he is not saying that.)

One of the arguments against Scottish independence was that it would have left Scotland outside the EU with no guarantee of being accepted.

And that there was no overall plan or concept for implementing independence, it was just an expression of intent.

Right. The Scots got hoodwinked into staying. And the SNP has and should continue to pounce on this. It’s also created new problems in Northern Ireland where Brexit passed but the divide was on old sectarian grounds and with the question of the border.

Well, the difference with that referendum was that there was about 2 years of intense debate in Scotland prior to that referendum precisely about how independence would be implemented, and it’s implications, hence the EU issues mentioned you mentioned above. It was a very informed debate at all levels of society, hence the high turnout (84.6%!)

I was expecting the debate to be even more intense for the Brexit referendum. In fact there was virtually no discussion of practical issues, instead it was mostly rhetorical posturing and soundbites at best. And it’s been the same since.

I do not think they got hoodwinked, a lot of people who might have supported independence vited against it because the vital questions of currency, trade, military preparedness (all of the UK’s nuclear subs are stationed in Scotland) and residence status were not at all addressed.

Brexit was nothing but a referendum to request the British Parliament to initiate Article 50 separation talks with the EU. They could have backed out of it at any time but would have lost face and the faith of the electorate.

Here’s the thing regarding PM May’s rather precarious position: If Rees-Mogg’s little attempted putsch fails, then according to Tory rules, she’s safe for an entire year.

That’ll get her well past the Brexit date in March, 2019. If Rees-Mogg fails at this, and he might, I can see a potentially fatal split emerging in the Tories.

Really, what we’re witnessing in Parliament right now is what most people have seen coming since Brexit won and the MPs who thought it couldn’t pass bolted out the nearest exists. Eventually there was going to be one of three scenarios: A very bad deal because the EU has absolutely no reason to give in to any of the UK’s demands, crashing out of the EU without any plan and a lot of carnage, or the Tories admitting it was all a mistake and being subsequently savaged for their lying and/or the damage done over choosing to treat Brexit seriously rather than as the joke it was.

So far, we’ve got a bad deal on the table, the reality that rejecting it means the UK will smash into the Brexit bollards way before a new deal can be reached, and May floating the idea of abandoning Brexit altogether.

If there wasn’t going to be economy disaster regardless of which outcome was chosen, I’d be cracking open a bottle of schadenfreude right now.

On Sky News Rory Stewart, the justice minister, is now defending Theresa May’s Brexit plan. Hopefully he will make a better job of if than he did when he was on Radio 5 Live earlier, and went full Donald Trump, making up a statistic in a bid to prove that the deal is popular.

Say for a second that May loses the no-confidence vote before week’s end and/or wins but resigns anyway. Whoever steps up next is pretty much fucked from the get-go because the deal on the table will now be too politically toxic to touch, there’s no real time on the clock left because the EU’s unlikely to agree to “start over,” and that just leaves backing out of Brexit altogether as the “best” option.

It’s no wonder Cameron got out when he did. The party submitted a vote to the people on which poison it liked better and the people decided hemlock tasted better than cyanide.

The thing is, I noticed in the replies to that tweet that a Brexiteer argued along the lines of “Be careful of what you wish… We may win again!”. However, if the referendum was a three option question, with “Yes to Brexit deal”, “Yes to Brexit, but no to deal” and “No to Brexit”, then the latter would win as, barring some fluke, the leave vote would be split between the first two options.

I suspect this may be one reason for the government’s firm line against a second referendum, but I could imagine a politician using this tactic as a “get out of Brexit” manoeuvre.

It’s a “Get out of Jail Free” card is all it is. The public have realized Brexit was a massive mistake (either because it was or because of the deal that’s on the table), and the Tories are realizing there’s no good scenario forward that won’t see them resigned to the opposition for a generation. So this vote is being floated as a way for both sides to back out of Brexit without any actual responsibility being accepted.

Brexit is another indictment of rash populism jump started by xenophobic interests. My favorite were seeing the people who wanted Brexit but also wanting to keep the benefits of EU membership basically I want cake all day and I don’t want to be fat.

Day after the 2016 Brexit vote I posted on FB a note of concern about the implications of this decision. A Trumpster friend was very nonchalant — said that this would allow the British to make their own trade decisions. No wonder Boris and Donald are friends — and Trump supporting Americans were also in favor of the results of this vote. Nationalism has poisoned too many minds. Brexit vote certainly presaged the similar Trump vote. In both cases voters didn’t understand what they really were getting but they liked the pretty messages.

I think the difference is that the initial referendum was on the principle of leaving the EU, whilst the “People’s Vote” (I hate that term) is about the negotiated settlement of leaving the EU. Unless “No Brexit” is on the referendum, it’s about how the UK is leaving the EU. There was a similar proposal floated by the SNP re: Independence in that they proposed a second referendum on the independence settlement.

And don’t forget the people already voted about the EU in 1973- to enter it. Of course, no-one seriously talks about respecting that vote.

I saw him on his first tour, opening for Faces at the Electric Factory in Philly, just him, Dee and Nigel. He took the stage in yellow overalls and gold-sparkled Doc Maartens.

Unless he knows if Stone starts talking the whole thing could come down. That is not to say Stone did it all, but he may be enough to tie all some loose ends.

Or, it is about all the stuff Rachel talked about last night?

More on Whitaker being sketchy at best, his relationship to Sam Clovis who was the Trump national campaign chairman and hired Carter Page and George Papadopoulos. Plus the reports that Rick Gates keeps on talking with Mueller in not only the Russian investigation but now in SEVERAL investigations.

Trump’s plate is full of bad stuff for him to swallow. It must be bitter.

Here is Rachel’s rather long piece on all that. The Gates stuff is around the 8:40 mark.

[Embedded content]

part of his problem is there’s nothing to use for distraction

rallies would be meaningless
there’s no legislation
caravan? what caravan?

since he doesnt really do any work, there are no accomplishments to report

if he doesnt manufacture something then all he can do is wait to get hit with something - he doesnt know what or from what direction it will be coming

not an enviable position for that kind of ego

Drama’s always been EJ’s strong suit. So to speak. :)

I saw him on his first tour, opening for Faces at the Electric Factory in Philly, just him, Dee and Nigel. He took the stage in yellow overalls and gold-sparkled Doc Maartens.

‘Your Song’ had not yet broken on radio, and everybody was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ Needless to say, his little combo stole the show. Rod had to work extra hard that night.

That had to have been a heck of a show.

Oh, it was. EJ attacked the piano from every conceivable angle, at one point lying face-down on top of it and playing a solo. I could never figure out how he could play backwards and up-side down.

And Faces were nearing their arena-hero era and Rod had conquered his legendary shyness. Like every Faces show, it was a great big boozy singalong. And as per usual, every one of them were impeccably dressed. :)

First report from TMZ (who may be complicit, their CEO is a big Trump guy) was that the woman was his wife. They later updated the page without noting the correction. The details are still pretty thin, and the woman who was allegedly attacked is still anonymous.

And the Surefire Twitter account tweeted ‘Surefire strikes again’ yesterday and Wohl was bragging about ‘getting’ both Mueller and Avenatti.

The kid thinks he’s smart, but he’s only smart enough to get up to his neck in legal trouble. Stepping to a shark like Avenatti is not gonna end well for him.

Vittello. Is that Lakota for stupid shithead?

PBS tv rec:

a series called Native America… it’s mostly about pre-Columbian times (from 13,000 years ago until), but in ep 4 they get into the conquistadors.

Apparently there was a priest who felt his conversion efforts would be more successful if he truly understood Aztec beliefs as a starting point for discussion, so he hired some local scribes to write a whole illustrated encyclopedia about their history, culture, etc. It’s 14 volumes. Each page has the story in Spanish in one column, and Nahuatl in the other. That codex is now in Vatican possession.

Turns out, it’s not actually a “translation” as such; 100 years of it is the story from two points of view. The Nahuatl version goes into a lot of detail about stuff the Spanish would have preferred not be told, like specific minute-by-minute accounts of some of the massacres. 1521 is when Spain won the war, with the Aztecs’ unconditional surrender and becoming a subject people.

The final chapter is about the 1576 Smallpox epidemic that killed almost 80% of the Maya and Aztec. At this point in the book, the beautiful full-color illustrations have given way to line drawings, because there’s nobody left to make the dyes.

Pre-Columbus, there were about 100 million people in the Americas. By 1600, there were 10 million. (which certainly made things easier for English-then-American troops; imagine if they’d had to try to conquer a ten times larger force than what they actually faced.)

Today, there’s about 50 million indigenous in the entire hemisphere (most of them well south of the US).

ep 4 also has a great history of the Comanche, including rock carvings depicting the battle in which they defeated their first set of Spanish troops (the same year the Mayflower arrived) and took all their animals, and how they very quickly became the greatest horsemen the world had ever seen. The territory they dominated for 200 years was larger than I’d realized.

Note the combined pro-Brexit vote is still smaller than remain. One of the problems about the referendum is that pro-Brexit could get a bigger combined vote, and remain would still win. That doesn’t appear to be the case here.

So, according to polling at least, most people would strongly support a referendum that would inevitably lead to a remain win.

I’m really hating Chrome. On some sites that have a lot of video ads, etc. it will open up so many processes it just becomes a bog.

And I know people make money off adds…but I can’t stand that it seems you have to wait for all the ads to come in before you can touch the actual content you’re interested in.

There has to be a better way to do the web ads. I think the way it works now is not beneficial to the advertisers.

I still think the ads need to be loaded onto the server the site is on so they are available quicker by not having to use all the new outside connections that slow the loading down.

That would probably kill the ad services from going through your cookies to load ads from places you recently visited.

Wait, that might not be a bad thing.

I’m sure if asked, Mitch would burble up that piss-poor excuse from what seems ages ago that Trump would never sign the bill so bringing it up for a vote would be pointless.

If enough GOP Senators had the guts to vote to override his veto, it wouldn’t be pointless.

Dunno if it’s been noted here, but there’s been another Red-to-Blue flip: ME-02. (D) Jared Golden was certified the winner by the Maine SoS by about a 2900-vote margin (50.53%) over incumbent (R) Bruce Poliquin.

What’s unusual here is that Maine used a Ranked Choice Voting system: Poliquin was up slightly in the first round, but fell behind when the #3 choices were allocated.

Rep. Poliquin also apparently failed in a court move to try to get the RCV system declared “unconstitutional”, i.e. the usual Republican last-ditch attempt.

So, supposedly NO Republican Congresspeople from New England left at all, outside of Sen. Susan Collins. Hopefully, she’ll be next.

Ooops: didn’t see nos. 419 and 421. Sorry

Now the Republicans are ramming through a what is being called an unconstitutional bill that would effectively ban abortion in Ohio. Probably the “Heartbeat” bill.

Again Kasich said he wouldn’t let that through, but fucking DeWine will.

These Republican assholes are out of control. They are obviously feeling they can do anything after they kept the House and elected DeWine governor.

Let’s remember that the day before Obama was inaugurated, McConnell and Cantor led a caucus meeting where it was decided they would obstruct EVERYTHING. They would filibuster EVERYTHING. Before Obama proposed any legislation or put forth any nominees, McConnell had already instructed his senators that it was required by the party that they unanimously oppose each and every thing, even if it was something they themselves had suggested the previous week.

(Random charity aside from a lurker… )

So my favorite internet fundraiser of the year is into its last day. Check out desertbus.org where a Canadian comedy troupe and friends are playing the most tedious video game ever, auctioning and raffling off prizes, singing, dancing, and other hilariously random things. This is probably the longest-running gaming-centric fundraiser, and they support Child’s Play who buy gaming equipment and resources primarily for children’s hospitals and a few similar settings.

When I was ten I was in the hospital for three weeks or so to get some liver ducts fixed and then waiting while the post-surgery pancreatitis went away. After the first five days mostly I felt okay, but getting jabbed with needles six times a day and some unfortunate hospital room arrangements had me in a bad mood. Someone had donated an Intellivision and a dozen or so games that could be used in front of the nurses’ station and while I can’t say it made me get better any faster but it probably meant I didn’t snarl at the nurses quite so much. That was decades before Child’s Play started up, but I was delighted to see someone carrying that torch in an organized fashion.

So I chip in one or two grand towards Desert Bus every year. To give back, yes, but also because the event is a great mental flossing where work and politics don’t matter so much. It’s streamed through Twitch, but you can watch it on their site and even if you do click over to the source feed they very strongly moderate their chat, better than anyone else in this size range I’ve encountered. Donations are through Paypal and go straight to the charity who claim a 94% passthrough rate. I strongly recommend checking it out, especially as we get into the evening and the rush of the last few hours.

(and grr, new page - probably won’t copy across since I don’t want to spam)

our local food pantry regularly gets out of date food from area grocery stores. Sometimes it’s gone off before we can distribute it, but even then we can sometimes use moldy bread or slightly icky fruit and veg for livestock feed.
