Still has not visited troops in a war zone since taking office. Can’t even make it to the border to buck up the troops fighting off the “invasion.”

By the way, wasn’t he worried about snarling up D.C. traffic in order to make this appearance? Or did HMX-1 suddenly find that it could fly in cold, wet conditions again?

War veterans Ike, JFK and GWH Bush were real slackers I guess.

I think Tammy Duckworth pointed out on TV the other day that the Trump administration has yet to nominate a Chief Information Officer for the VA. And that office is responsible for things like the computer system that is currently not sending housing and education payments to veterans. She also mentioned that something similar happened during the Obama administration, and the VA secretary made sure checks were cut while the automated system was fixed.

But you know, these guys love the troops… as props.

Meanwhile, in Florida:

Palm Beach County’s election supervisor said less than an hour before the 3 p.m. deadline that they would not finish the machine recount in any of three statewide races still in question and would move on to the manual recount at 4 p.m. The county’s results from election night will be added to the recount results from other counties. A manual recount of ballots rejected by machines is expected to be ordered in the Senate race, in which Gov. Rick Scott (R) leads Sen. Bill Nelson (D) by fewer than 13,000 votes.

Palm Beach County not completing the machine recount seems like an equal protection violation. I don’t understand how the response can be “oh well, on to the manual recount.”

There were three races needing recounts. The governor’s race, the Senate race, and the agriculture commissioner. The governor’s race was under .5% but over .25%. Plus, apparently they have to do the machine recount to confirm if it is within .25%.

i also dont see how any artificial deadline, even a state law, can have any merit

it takes as long as it takes
machinery problems or not
what if the voter volume was up another 20%
or a higher percentage of mail ins that required signature verification
or someone decided to be….really….careful…..and….really…..slow…….
it takes what it takes

and we’re only talking about post election day counting
not even the election day shenanigans of not enough voting booths, etc. which disfranchise people in other ways.

these deadlines are dumb

you make it to the polling place and are registered, you get to vote
all legitimate ballots get vetted and counted

how hard is that?

Many of these sad stories are such that when one looks at them in the cold light of reality, the truth is painful - we’re all going to die, it’s just how painful or awkward that will be.

I for one believe our society’s number one priority ought to be that everyone in society get the help they need in their toughest moments.

To me that means if someone has a serious illness they ought not be bankrupted by it.

When I used to listen to Limbaugh, like 15 years ago, his big thing was always that bipartisanship meant that Democrats get everything they want and Republicans had to go along with it. That’s been internalized on the right, I’m sure, and I suspect since they now have had extended runs with control of Congress, they must think that’s how it actually should be.

Ms. West’s $343 million jackpot would be a drop in the bucket compared to the need.

Cash value was $198M. Minus 37% federal tax and 7% (I think) Iowa state tax leaves about 111M. The winner has already set up a foundation in the name of her deceased grandson, to help those who suffer likewise.

She’s probably one of the more generous rich people around, it appears.

The NY guy who won the other half of the jackpot came forward yesterday. He also took the present cash value. He’s a retired federal employee, whose mother is still alive, so he wants to buy her a place to live.

Both of these winners are far better people than the rich and famous Trump draws into his circle.

Follow up answer, after reading the whole order:

There wasn’t enough evidence for the court to grant a preliminary injunction. My guess is that, assuming Palm Beach County didn’t get its results in on time, Nelson can go back to court and ask for an order that requires the county to finish the machine recount and for the Secretary of State to accept the results after the deadline.

i also dont see how any artificial deadline, even a state law, can have any merit

it takes as long as it takes
machinery problems or not
what if the voter volume was up another 20%
or a higher percentage of mail ins that required signature verification
or someone decided to be….really….careful…..and….really…..slow…….
it takes what it takes

and we’re only talking about post election day counting
not even the election day shenanigans of not enough voting booths, etc. which disfranchise people in other ways.

these deadlines are dumb

you make it to the polling place and are registered, you get to vote
all legitimate ballots get vetted and counted

how hard is that?
(yes i know, i know)

We learned in 2000 that arbitrary deadlines made up for the occasion are sacred and supersede every other consideration.

If I understand correctly, the problem in 2000 was that there effectively was no plan for a statewide recount, so the Gore campaign pushed for a selection of counties to be recounted, and for specific standards for how disputed votes (hi there hanging chads) would be assessed. The Bush campaign appealed (and also submitted their own map and standards) and it was early December before it got to the Supreme Court, with most vote counting suspended in the meantime.

Through a moderately perverted reading of “equal protection” the conservative majority decided that to protect everyone’s votes equally, the only viable option was to do no recounting at all since there was insufficient time to design and implement a plan for recounting ALL votes in the state. So no recount, initial results stand, Bush gets the EVs.

So in the meantime, Florida has passed several laws controlling recounts - the thresholds for machine and hand recounts, which have been tested since for local races at least. But there are legislative and functional limits on how long those recounts can last. Also Dems have very heavily focussed on getting their voters out in early and absentee voting since 2008, and that tends to extend the time needed to count. And Repub laws forcing ID verification have resulted in increased provisional ballots, which are a grind to resolve.

This has all sort of collided this year - and the Bush v Gore precedent gets applied in an ironically opposite way - since the entire state has the plan and facility to carry off the recount well before functional deadlines, the conflict has become that there are other laws which restrict how long those recounts take. Some localities can’t seem to meet those goals, which leads to the rulings publicized today.

I will say that there has to be something going wrong in some places here - something that’s dramatically slowing the counts in the most populous counties. This very likely could be gross underfunding or problematic regulations, but I’m not willing to rule out incompetence, either. There really needs to be some sort of independent audit of why the delays are happening.

Also, these guys know nothing about what is happening with women’s fashions these days. Consignments, an excess of second-hand clothing means that it’s possible to get a pretty extensive wardrobe for a lot less than you think. And in NYC, it’s probably even better odds than that. Let’s not forget she has friends who can give her clothes too.

I’ts the whole right-wing out of touchness that gets me about everything, especially about financially challenged people. They ask, why can they afford such nice stuff? One, China, folks. Secondly, one ironic benefit of the aging of the Baby Boom has been downsizing, which has made a lot of stuff available that is barely used. I”ve been a beneficiary of both things from furniture, to my mom’s wardrobe, to household appliances that are cheaper than before. The real issues are things that can’t be so easily secondhanded like housing, medical bills, and student loans. Which is what Ocasio is concerned with.

Clothes are easy, housing is hard, which is one of the things she campaigned on. The stock of second-hand housing is being gentrified out of existence, moving very poor people out to suburbs that have poor mass transit, if not on the streets.

And, as I understand it, few if any of those high-paid jobs will go to locals.

As I understand it, one reason for choosing the NY and VA locations was that there’s already considerable local talent. So, yeah, a lot of high-paid jobs will go to locals - locals who are already employed at high-paid jobs.

Interestingly, there was an undervote in the Senate race compared to the governor’s race of 34,023 votes. Not sure what that means, exactly, but given the difference in the Senate race is only 12,602 votes, it could mean a lot of misread ballots.

If I remember correctly, speculation is that the design of the ballot led to the Senate race being ignored because it was right next to the voting instructions. I can’t remember if that was the Florida or Texas ballot, but I thought it was Florida.

It’s sort of like the electoral college. Desantis won more counties, but they were smaller populations. Same thing happens here in California, Cox won 27 of 58 counties, yet lost by 2m votes.

As a side note, for as happy as we are about Orange County, California possibly sending no Republicans to Congress, it did still vote for Cox 51-49 (which is probably the closest gubernatorial election in Orange County in forever).

That could all be down to ballot design. Column 1 of the ballot in Broward was the usual instructions, but then at the bottom is the Senate race. The top of Column 2 is the Govvernor’s race. It could be that 34,023 people just didn’t look at the bottom of column 1.

Nelson’s holding out hope that the machines didn’t read the Senate race properly, which a hand recount would reveal, since it looks at undervotes and overvotes.

Which is one reason to have an official template for ballots. The differences would be technical ones: a template for scanners, a template for hand-counted, a template for mail ballots, et cetera. We have them for letters, for post cards, for greeting cards, et cetera, why not for this? That local officials have even the need, let alone the responsibility for designing a ballot form is ridiculous.

Disappointed in the outcome for Gillum. He will be back in 4 years, either for Governor again or facing Rubio. Neither DeSantis or Rubio will get any better with age or govern in a way that makes them more popular.

It’s hard to say. Some of the result may simply be a rejection of Trump and in 4 years with a Democrat in the White House we could see some of these seats swing back. We might even see some swing back in 2 years if voters reject Trump and split their tickets.

Some of it may be real realignment playing out over the course of a few election cycles.

Multihour delays for the Port Authority Bus Terminal (basically wall to wall people; no cell service, no buses, and no sign of improvement).

If the Republican Party had been a somewhat moderate right party like one headed by Romney or even Jeb, maybe there would have been a little swing back in 2 years. But #ETTD, everything Trump touches dies. And one of the things that he’s killed is a decent concern with everyday lives and real life concerns. Pizzagate, flirting with Nazis, scary caravans doesn’t pave roads or pay for health care. Also the fact that the head of the Republican Party is bat-shit crazy and getting crazier reinforces the need to build a wall between that party and you.

Interesting article on Vox:

Why racist politics appeals to white women, explained by American history

… white women have “invested in white supremacy because their whiteness affords them a particular kind of power that their gender does not.” If Democrats want to understand — and change — the political behavior of white women, they’ll need to understand how they’ve been both empowered and disempowered since the country was founded, and how that dual status affects their politics today.

I am not in any way, shape, form or fashion criticizing these people and I am well aware of how the jackpot amounts are reduced in the real world. There was no reason for me to include that peripheral analysis to make my point, which is that private charity is no substitute for a system that does not ruin people for being ill.
Libertarians suggest that we can rely on such solutions, just as they suggest that soup kitchens and privately financed shelters are the solution to homelessness. I believe otherwise but that does not keep me from being the top contributor to our church homeless ministry, which includes medical assistance, as well as to the Democratic Party in this county. I have not said so in public before, but I also bought my friend and fellow veteran Charlie a house, so he can live out his final years in some kind of dignity.
